The World's Greatest Rubberstamp Body: Will The Senate Fold?

Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Very few people are left in Washington, D.C. who believe the "stimulus" bill is anything like a genuine stimulus bill.

People aren't debating whether or not it will work to quickly inject energy into the lethargic economy.  They know it won't.

People aren't debating the priority of the public works the bill proposes, because there are very, very few public works proposed.

And the United States Senate isn't fulfilling its reputation as the "greatest deliberative body in the world," because the Senate isn't deliberating.

"More than 300 amendments have been offered, but only 20 were debated. No hearings were held, no expert testimony heard," the D.C. Examiner observed.

“When the American people learn what this bill contains they will reject it," Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn proclaimed, but the truth is, the public already has rejected it.  Opinion polling shows support for the porkapalooza dropping fast.  Thus the Senate's rush to push it through.

"[T]he process stinks, and the substance of the bill sucks," Senator Lindsey Graham bluntly declared in an interview on my radio show.  Graham and his colleagues were speaking freely against a very popular and newly elected president because the bill he has demanded is so deeply flawed that there is no choice but to speak against it.  A dozen Democrats in the House rebelled when Nancy Pelosi first kidnapped the idea of a stimulus and used it as a Trojan Horse for every program and wish list denied the Democrats through the Bush Years.  The Bush Years were hardly those of fiscal discipline, but they look like models of sobriety compared to the first fortnight of Obama.  A pack of House Blue Dogs bolted, but not enough to force real change on the "real change."  It would be up to the Senate, and no doubt more than a few House Democrats who know this bill is the legislative equivalent of bleeding the patient hoped that the Senate would recast the "stimulus" into, well, a stimulus.

The Senate leadership is at least as driven by politics as Nancy Pelosi, and with a love of pork even greater than is generally abroad in the House because each of the 100 (99 with the unfilled Minnesota seat) have entire states to feed.  With a greatly reduced GOP caucus --41, with moderates there in the persons of Senators Collins and Snowe from Maine, Specter of Pennsylvania, and Voinovich of Ohio-- some common sense and votes to deny cloture would have to come from the Senate Democrats who claim the label moderate, like Ben Nelson of Nebraska.  GIven that those dozen Democrats bolted in the House and many more were troubled by the bill, hope for serious retooling rested on a handful of senate Democrats, but they have yet to make a concerted effort to salvage the bill.

How bad is the bill?  The Congressional Budget Office --run by the Democratic majority and staffed by appointees of the Democratic majority, but nevertheless professional economists of the sort who don't want their reputations forever impaired-- announced on Wednesday that the bill as proposed would actually harm the economy, causing the Gross Domestic Product to actually shrink over the next decade.

That's why Senate Democrats are trying to rush through a cloture vote --the evidence is piling up that President Obama's first big bill is a massive mistake.  Rather than take a trip down to 1600 and explain this to him in the privacy of the Oval Office, his Illinois colleague Dick Durbin --number 2 in the Senate-- is pushing the bill that contains a $2 billion dollar earmark for a new "zero emission" power plant in their home state. It isn't just Durbin --all of the majority's members see a once-in-a-career-opportunity to slice off a gigantic slice of bacon for the home front.  Their collective conscience about what they are doing to future generations --and what they are not doing for the economy right now-- is simply gone.

The only thing that can rekindle that conscience about their larger calling is public outrage, which has been building and which continues to mount.

The bill is an Ayres Rock of bad legislation, so obviously horrible from so far away that voters in every state have noted its exceptionally awful features and are watching now to see who does what with it.  To vote for this bill is to sign on to crew a doomed ship, and the GOP has quite rightly defined the issue and taken a nearly unanimous stand against it, in a stroke reviving its brand and contrasting themselves with the feckless spending that is in the Democrats' genes.

Yes, when the GOP was in the majority, it poured money into programs such as the prescription drug benefit and No Child Left Behind, but you knew where the money was going and what it was buying.  Mostly the GOP spent money on the war with the jihadists.  By contrast there is almost nothing in this bill for the Pentagon.  A trillion for pork, a few pennies for defense.

And when the last president demanded billions in a hurry, the money was poured into the banking system, and it worked, though not without waste.  Government by definition wastes, but the fiscal water was poured on the financial fire.  This bill proposes to pour it onto the sand.

There is still time for some Senate Democrats to acknowledge the bill's deep defects.  Dianne Feinstein is a sharp legislator who knows how the California economy really does need a boost for housing.  Max Baucus and Jeff Bingaman are two long-serving members of the Fiance Committee who must know that this bill is fiscal Hemlock. Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas is facing a tough re-election battle in a state that will not quickly forget that signed on to this travesty.  Ben Nelson of Nebraska has a reputation for seriousness that is in danger of being lost.  There are others as well.

The economy is fragile and needs short term stimulus.  There are many crucial projects that could be undertaken with a half trillion dollars. The country and the Republican Party will support a genuine stimulus package.  Thus the President and the senate Democrat have before them an opportunity to deliver an important and timely piece of legislation that can serve the country and bolster their party's fortunes at the same time.  How they have managed to corner themselves into attempting to shout down the informed opposition and divert the attention of a focused public is beyond me, but  it isn't too late to salvage the situation, and with it the opportunity to help the economy right itself towards growth.

That was to Loyal Democrat, Response #43
(My apologies to Robert on Response #42!!!)

Loyal Democrat, Post #42
What part of the First Amendment do you not understand? Evidently the part that states, "...the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."! Your post is absolutely absurd! Do you suppose the American citizens to lie down and play dead? Are you proposing that the American citizenry has NO recourse of action. And, by the way, recourse comes in times of crisis! Not everyone voted for the current president! Not everyone voted for each of the Congress malcontents! Despite your rant, we Americans DO have a voice, and we WILL exercise it as well, as fast, and as long as any liberal out there.

stimulus details
I wonder what the true stimulus bill looks like. Make your argument with some details Mr. Hewitt. Why is the construction of a school not the same kind of economic stimulus as building a sewer line? You guys don't really know, however, and the argument is just the same thing about what kind of government we are going to have.

William
Unfortunately, there are no adults in power right now. So, disagreeing with the ruling party is being bitter? Well, I guess you would know. Your side spent the last 8 years ranting and whining and spreading lies. Now that was bitter!

You guys are bitter
WOW!!!!
What a bunch of hate-filled, bitter, angry, malcontents post over here. Didn't you guys get the memo in November? You're irrelevant now! Your side has been screwing up and making messes since 1980. Let the adults clean it up now will you?

Don't Do It!
Please do not do it! Stand up against it and make a stand for our children's future! Four million jobs... he has never said "HOW" he will get that done!

Stimulus bill vastly oversized
I do think a timely jolt of fiscal stimulus would help a lot if it could be rolled out right away (e.g, via quick tax cuts plus some reasonable spending). But here is some intriguing data from a post at Politico:

"Back in 1933, Interior Secretary Harold Ickes took a $3.3 billion appropriation - $424 billion in modern dollars - and carved his place in history by leading the Public Works Administration...That amount is roughly equivalent to the $466 billion remaining in new spending in the Senate bill…"

This year’s spending stimulus is “roughly equivalent” to that of 1933 (not counting the tax cuts). But in 1933, America was emerging from several years—1929-32—when GDP plunged almost 30% cumulatively, and 1933 wasn’t looking any better. Despite the daily gloom and doom, we are now looking back at a year in which GDP rose more than 1%, and we’re looking ahead to a year, 2009, in which the Congressional Budget Office and most economists expect—without any stimulus package— GDP to decline more in the first half and then climb again in the second.

The CBO projects GDP to fall by 2% in 2009. Coupled with the 1% growth in 2008, that means this recession will result in a cumulative GDP decline of roughly 1%—compared to 30% in the early years of the Depression. What a stimulus “roughly equivalent” to that of 1933 will do is anyone’s guess—except that it’s certain to kick off a hell of a severe inflation.

It’s time people on the left and right stopped battling this out with hot air and looked at the numbers. I’m doing my bit on my blog:

http://thepurplecenter.blogspot.com/

What Stinulus?
Approving no strimulus package is better than approving a bad stimulus package. The Republicans need to show some guts and stand up against this package. A lot of voters that supported Obama for President are already asking themselves what they got themselves into, especially those that are losing their jobs.

I dont normally
take hewitt as a serious conservative he seems much more like just a republican however he is right on this one.

Id love to see allot of us as in allot go to black market jobs or work and keep the tax returns off the books and basically take away any bullets they may want shoot back at us.

realize the irony of this , it will take us taxpayers to pay for us to enter into socialism all under the cloud of we must act fast or else what ? socialism ?

if a few million conservatives claimed the Rangel clause for the next 2 years , Obama would be forced to maybe be more reasonable. If he doesnt have returns coming in then he can only borrow so much. even the goverenment knows this. No returns , No spending.

so as they said about all the tax cheats, its a hick up , a honest mistake , no big deal , not a issue in these times.

cut and paste those gems and just remember them when the IRS is sent out to shake down some change from us folks who wont pay for the change of a Once great country into a terd bowl of one

just say no thanks to all that

Omnibus spending so-called stimulus bill

Letter to all common sense citizens.

We learned that the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office says Obama's so-called "economic recovery package" will actually hurt the economy more in the long run than if he were to do nothing.

Some small short term gains can be expected for the next two years, we are told, but why, WHY, do these demagogues in the Senate want to push this package of destruction on the United States? Do they want the demise of our Democracy so aptly supported by our (former) capital market system? (Are these rhetorical questions?)

If the Dems and weak kneed RINOS really had any programs that would help us get back on our feet, they would be worthy of separate legislations. One program authorized by one legislative bill - no pork.

No, it wouldn't take too long. We elect and pay Legislators to do the business of the people in the most effective and cost efficient way - not only for the short term, but the long term as well. The problems we face will be greatly exacerbated if Obama is allowed to rush an omnibus spending bill through so that everyone can get the pork payback promised for their support in getting him elected.

Do they think the USA will not survive and that a short term stop gap measure will give them time to secure their future in the USSA (United Socialist States of America) they seem to be trying to create? .

Reasonable people, this is the time to share your common sense with these Senators who seem to have none. Before it is too late, Scream. Phone. E-mail. Or Fax, but SEND THEM your message in no uncertain terms.

I LIKE the balance
If they don't need GOP votes to pass one atrocity after another that's great!! LET them overreach and keep doing it and then THEY own this mess. With no major GOP fingerprints on this turd it WILL bite them a la 1994!! I can not WAIT!!

Of course lib-tards think 1994, like 9/11, happened in a vacuum.

I won't write my senators.
One's father was named after "Governor Casey's Highest state Business Taxes In The Nation", and has been "ike father like son" in every vote.
The other is RINO Specter who already told us he is going to vote for it. He doesn't have to care. He'll either be dead when he is up for re-eletion, or he thinks he'll get the sympthy vote. He also changed his e-mail and website addresses, so I can't get anything to him.

The ultimate stimulus
We the people pay all taxes, and we are the only ultimate source of all tax revenue. Regardless where government initially collects the money, all tax money ultimately comes from us, the people.
Since we the people are the one and only source of all tax revenue:
There should be only one tax to collect all tax revenue.
It should be a single, simple, fair, direct, graduated, individual, full-income tax levied on living persons for each level of government: One Tax and Done.
You cannot convince a person or a corporation to start a new business or expand an existing business, increase jobs, and hire new employees, when you tax away the operating capitol he is using to operate his PRESENT business
The best thing that government can do to help the country, the people, and even government, is to repeal all of the many hundreds, or thousands of existing taxes, fees, and charges. These taxes are the federal deficit. These taxes are the high price of everything. These tax eliminations are spending cuts. Every tax that is eliminated is a tax that we the people no longer have to pay. These taxes are the difference between the price we pay for health care and everything else, and the price we would pay if these taxes were repealed. Eliminating these taxes will remove them from the price paid for everything by everyone.
One Tax and Done will provide many benefits to all, even government:
One Tax and Done will reduce the price paid for everything by one-third.

Election farce
The 2008 Presidential Election was a farce. It was not between a Democrat Party candidate and a Republican Party candidate. It was between a CPA (Communist Party of America) member and a RINO (Republican In Name Only). The RINO candidate was chosen by the CPA because he had military experience, and their anointed CPA candidate didn’t. The RINO candidate was nominated by Democrat voters in states with open primaries where they could use crossover votes to select the GOP candidate before Republican voters had chance to vote for their choice.

The big mistake was in the selection of the VP candidate for the RINO Party. Sarah Palin was the most qualified, and exciting candidate in the campaign, including all the members of Congress in line for the Presidency. As soon as they realized their mistake, the CPA sent out the attack dogs to vilify Palin whenever and wherever possible. The RINO Party put her in the crosshairs of the CPA wherever and whenever they could.

The RINO Party candidate campaigned as a RINO, not as a Republican. Whenever possible, the RINO Party candidate praised the CPA candidate, and crossed over to the CPA whenever possible. He had established a record in Congress as a RINO, not as a Republican.

The CPA spent as much campaign money as possible on the CPA candidate; while the RINO Party spent as little as possible on their candidate. This election was like a soccer game where the net at one end of the field was one foot larger than the ball diameter, and the net at the other end was ten feet high and as long as the field was wide.

CPA members of Congress deliberately caused the national economy to go into the worst recession in decades and blamed the RINO Party. The RINO Party candidate happily accepted the blame.

After deliberately losing the election, the RINO Party candidate is praising and kissing the a@@ of the CPA candidate.

Conservative GOP Members
Obama voters have reduced your numbers to the point that the liberals don’t even need RINO votes to pass everything they want, and that’s bad. It’s at the point where Nancy Ex-pelosi-ve is eliminating rules that allow you to have any effect. We need to get Conservatives back in the majority in Congress

WHAT ALL OF YOU MUST DO FROM NOW ON IS VOTE UNANIMOUSLY AGAINST EVERY BILL AND TAX THAT LIBERALS PROPOSE!!! DO NOT VOTE FOR ANYTHING LIBERALS PROPOSE!!! DO NOT GO ALONG TO GET ALONG WITH THE LIBERALS!!! DO NOT GO TO THEIR PARTIES!!! TOTALLY VOCALLY OPPOSE THE LIBERALS IN EVERY WAY, ESPECIALLY ILLEGAL ALIEN AMNESTY!!! THE LIBERALS ARE TRYING TO STICK YOU WITH PART OF THE BLAME FOR ALL THEIR FUTURE FAILURES; DON’T LET THEM DO IT!!! DO NOT CLAP WHEN OBAMA SAYS ANYTHING!!! JOINING LIBERALS IN ANYTHING IS SELLING OUT AMERICA!!! THEY ARE NOT YOUR FRIENDS!!! THEY ARE YOUR AND AMERICA’S WORST ENEMIES, AND WILL DO ANYTHING THEY CAN TO DESTROY BOTH!!! GET ALL THE BLUEBLOOD COUNTRYCLUB ELITES OUT OF THE GOP!!!

You cannot stop their bills or even slow them down beyond calling for roll call votes for them. Make everything they pass totally theirs. What you will be doing is getting on record as opposing all the destructive liberal bills. They are trying to get you on the hook with them, so you can’t blame them fully.

When all these liberal actions make things much worse, as they will, you can point at the record and show the people that none of you had anything to do with them, and that you had no control over their passage, that all this destruction was caused by liberals.

Then you can tell the people about the tax elimination plan that you proposed that was kept from a vote by the liberals, and other bills that you proposed. You did not vote for the Algore hoax which multiplied the cost of everything many times, and made energy and home heating inaccessible.

A Socialist Stimulus Plan
America's march toward Socialism has been coming for quite some time -- mainly due to political correctness and most U.S. citizens' failure to fight on the cultural and moral fronts and for fiscal conservative principles.

The United States (for the most part made up of conservative people) has until now just stood by ignoring many of the mistakes which have ruined so much of the rest of the world. Although we have long been suspicious of welfare addiction, high taxes, government control and loss of our national sovereignty, Americans have been so indoctrinated to "political correctness" to confront cultural and moral revolutionaries.

So now that a well-coached, politically polished, charismatic speaker has charmed the American voter, the Democratic Party will crowd around Obama and collect the rich spoils of his victory as well as their own, under the guise of a "pending economical catastrophe."

Can the Stimulus plan be stopped? I doubt it . . . not with the push by Obama and the "in-your-face" Democrats to rush it through a cloture vote, regardless of the public's outrage. And apparently the bill has enough votes since, Collins, Snowe and Specter will show their true colors and stand with the Democrats. But at least most of our Republican leadership recognize that this bill is full of special interest pet projects and entitlements. If the Republican Party is to ever again regain its viability . . . now is the time to stand up for GOP principles.

Get involved!
Yes, indeed... I have not only e-mailed my 2 Senators, but all the other 97, plus many House members on this travesty. Some I have sent multiple e-mails. Excessive? Maybe, but a lot is at stake here. Of course, I get "canned" responses, but it adds to the tallies I know they keep. It is better than sitting back and doing nothing.

I also sent "Thank You" e-mails to Ms. Snow, Ms. Collins, And Mr. Specter for betraying our country and our future generations.

Welcome to the United Socialist States of America (U.S.S.A.) For all who voted for this...Enjoy!!

Loyal Democrat
Bull Hockey.
It's our right and responsibility as citizens to question, evaluate and criticise every measure that eminates from "Foggy Bottom" whether it comes from Demoncratic or Republican controlled government.
Yes. You sound like a true Demoncrat, just ready for further indoctrination.
Communism is soon to follow. Will you follow then? If they jump off a cliff, will you do the same? I guess ignorance is bliss to some.

The Arsonists Are Fighting The Fires???
Jimbo offers, "When you quibble this way you undercut any principled message that can reverse this decadence."

While America was fighting wars, the Democrat minority demanded control of things like Fannie and Freddie, in exchange for support. Typical Democrat maneuvering is to exploit a crisis for their wants and needs. As now.

Republicans caved in to keep the wars funded. Nice. Republicans even tried to reign in Fannie and Freddie, but caved as the war kept us safe, the first level of caring for America, and Democrats promised Fannie and Freddie policies were sound. Shame on us for trusting Frank and Dodd.

So, thanks to them and their promise that America, by way of Fannie and Freddie, will stand behind risky loans, risky loans became nearly legal tender throughout the world. Our economy crashed.

Now, the dummies that caused the crash are demanding more of the same as a solution. You have got to be out of your mind!

Obama - Demagogue Exraordiniare
So, all during Obama's run for office, he, with the Media's help, distanced himself from his history of associating with America targeting terrorists like Ayers and the America bashing religious fanatics like Wright. Even his "America is a mean country" wife was squelched to give us the impression that none of that is him.

Now, we are learning, no, that was him. He and the Media mearly were hiding it for votes. It worked.

The man is absolutely tone deaf. It is like the dummy that thinks everyone else has an accent, not him. Obama sees his Socialist, hate America, views as normal. Only Conservatives, those that beleive in America's Founders, the Constitution and freedom, are partisan.

America is so bad, that his first inteview is to a foreign press as a contrition to foreign countries on our behalf.

Now, since we are such a bad country, Obama has forced a bill that is all about taking power from citizens and giving to him, so that he can centrally plan and control commerce and us.

After-all to Obama, freedom is over-rated. We can do without that.

Karl Marx would be proud of this demagogue.

Re: Michael Steele
I've seen the man debate and I've listened to the man speak many times, and all I can say is that he is not an effective, persuasive speaker/debator. He seems like a nice guy, though. I'm not sure whether it will be a good pick, and neither do any of you...yet.

Once again wrong
It becomes typical for a Hugh Hewitt article to use many words to say: Is the Senate going to pass this bill? and some Senators better beware if they do. Great. I've never been in politics and I could have told you this was going to pass. Why is that? We'll see how this all shakes out. Let's hurry up and give the reins of gov't back to fiscal hawks like Bush and Specter, though. And yet you fail to notice that we're on the shortening side of bankruptcy and financial meltdown so complete that we may not even be the same country 20 years from now. But let's quibble about what you see as a few hundred billion dollars too much out of a bill. When you quibble this way you undercut any principled message that can reverse this decadence.

Why should we have to phone and write these idiots.Their #1 priority shoud be to look out at what is best for their country, not what makes them look good to the liberal msm.

Your signature list is short. It should include every employee of government all the way down to the Podunk dog catcher. They all think that and will react badly if we start acting like we do understand what is in those documents.

How perfectly descriptive "the socialist party and the much more socialist, socalist party." As I explained to the beleagured caller from the Republican Party it doesn't matter if you run to socialism or stroll to it you end up in the same place.

We are toast. If they get serious about gun control you will know where this is headed.

MESSIAHNOMICS 101
What I gathered from Obama's speech last night on the stimulus bill was this:

OBAMANOMICS=MESSIAHNOMICS

His speech in fact was a lesson in Messiahnomics 101 addressed to the angelic choir, the first sermon in a series of divine revelations on economic salvation and social peace. For what Jesus is to salvation history Obama is to economic history. Just as Jesus is needed to save our souls from eternal damnation and hopelessness Obama is the answer to saving our nation from eternal recession and joblessness. Without the blessing of Messiahnomics and government intervention the recession will endlessly worsen, like the climate perpetually warming, defying the laws of economic history: the cycles of boom, bust and recovery.

Obama's meaning last night was abundantly clear: the economic messiah at last is here to redeem us from the deadly sins of greed, self-interest and profit seeking, the sins that did us in......

825 billion spent

The biggest problem is this. The average American will spend more time determining what car to buy, what TV to buy, what house to buy than the Senate sprnt spending $825 billion plus 300 billion in interest.
This should tell all of America the people in the congress have zero respect for your hard work to pony up the money. This should tell Americans that DC doesn't care if your entire future is being condemned as long as they, 100% of the federal government, retain their jobs, their incomes and their excessive way of life.
A note to America from congress: You, America, consist of hundreds of millions of idiots. Not trainable, uneducated, small pea brained servants. Best of all you lack the courage to stand up by yourselves and have no knowledge of these things called the Bill of Rights and the Constitution. Fools.

Breaks My Heart!
It just breaks my heart that every time there is an important issue, our moderates like Collins, Snow, and Specter, not only fold and enable the Democrats to win on key issues but they make the Republicans look like undisciplined fools.

Thus Incrementalism will sink us as bit by bit, the line to hold back big Government, Centralism, socialism, erodes, buckles, and fades.

These fools have just put the nail in the coffin and the Fairness Doctrine and other spikes are down the road and being prepared. There is a real lack of leadership both in Israel and this nation and Europe. The ship is sinking slowly now but like the Titanic it will plunge into the seas of socialism and mediocrity.

Is there anyone out there who can remember ANY president who got off to a worse start than Obama?

Obama's Plan To Pay For It All
The President has a clever plan to pay for all of this. He's appointing wealthy Democratic tax cheats to positions in the administration. They'll have to pay their back taxes in attempts to salvage their chances of confirmation. Nominate enough of them and the whole Porkulus Bill is paid for. Genius!

Collins, Specter & Snowe just SOLD OUT..

BREAKING NEWS:

Senators Collins, Specter & Snowe just sold the United States out. Calling them "RINOs" is an insult to RINOs.

http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D966EEQ80&show_arti cle=1

WASHINGTON (AP) - With job losses soaring nationwide, Senate Democrats reached agreement with KEY REPUBLICANS Friday night on an economic stimulus measure at the heart of President Barack Obama's plan for combatting the worst recession in decades. "The American people want us to work together. They don't want to see us dividing along partisan lines on the most serious crisis confronting our country," said SEN. SUSAN COLLINS of Maine, one of two GOP senators who signaled support for the bill.

Officials put the cost of the measure at $780 billion in tax cuts and new spending combined. No details were immediately available, and there appeared to be some confusion even among senators about the price tag as floor debate continued late into the night.

The agreement capped a tense day of backroom negotiations in which Senate Majority Leader HARRY REID, joined by White House chief of staff RAHM EMANUEL, sought to attract the support of enough Republicans to give the measure the needed 60-vote majority.

In addition to COLLINS, Sen. ARLEN SPECTER, R-Pa., said he would vote for the bill. Sen. OLYMPIA SNOWE, R-Maine, remained uncommitted." (cap emphasis mine)

Thanks to these three SELL-OUTS (Collins, Specter and Snowe), a few years from now, our country will be forced to default on its debt obligations.

That’ll be after hyper-inflation has destroyed the value of our currency.

These 3 Traitors have enabled the Leftocrats to BORROW nearly a TRILLION DOLLARS, and flush it down the toilet on wasteful pet pork projects.

A trillion dollars.

That’s 1,000,000,000,000.00

If any of these three American Traitors (Senators Collins, Specter and Snowe) happen to be YOUR Senator, please, FIRE THEM.

every one is afraid of Obama
Well the Republicans have folded and now the American people can enter the rhelm of Socialistic values of over spending and hug taxation on the people that create jobs. How did they do it? This dumb founds me....The switch boards have been full all day, yet the supposited leaders of this country has not listened to the people once again. Good Job, what a joke, I can officially give up and throw in the towel, where is my CHECK....

pork looks like a over stuffed sausage
This bill is so full of pork and all fo the additive that go in to sausage links. The President and the rest of his loyal followers expect us the people of the United States to fry it up and eat it in one bite. All I can say is there is a election year next year and the year after that. The American people will exercise their right to vote.
Change the donkey to a pig, because I am smelling bacon...here piggy piggy piggy, oink, oink, oink

Stop Questioning the Government!
As our president has pointed out, the nation and the world faces utter calamity and financial collapse if we allow dissenters to criticize the bailout or analyze the details of the plan. The politicians in Washington know more about economics than any common citizen does, and if we pester them for explanations as to how the plan will save us, we will all face countless centuries of economic deprivation because of the unnecessary delay that will occur. Therefore, for the sanctity of the masses, we simply must allow our rulers to rule. After all, we put them into office so they can make our decisions for us.

Some may make the absurd claim to a freedom of speech in such matters as this, but the reality is that we owe no obligation toward those who seek to criticize or question the actions of our current administration. Just as the first amendment does not make one free to shout ‘fire’ in a crowded theater for fear of causing panic and endangering people, there is no constitutional protection that allows anyone the right to criticize government actions during a crisis. The tranquility of the collective is at stake, so the rights of common citizens must take a back seat to the actions of government.

Responding to the troll
I cannot believe I am actually responding to "You and whose army" and his fishing post but I have to tell you that I am disappointed that was the best you could come up with. I have come to expect more from the trolls on this site. Trying to make a point out of a link to another opinion piece which expands on the current topic and claiming it is somehow dishonest. A link to other online articles...on the internet no less! If I could borrow from comic book guy on The Simpsons, "Worst Troll Post Ever". Really they should revoke your troll license for such poor quality material. Please put forth some effort next time, we deserve better. Cheers.

Rehash of an old bad joke
There was a joke once about one of India's Presidents (warning: sounds better and funnier in vernacular than English) which showed the only needed ability for that post is a working right thumb (to thumbprint-through anything PM wants).

Has that now become the only qual for US Senator as well?

aurorawatcher
I wrote both my senators earlier this week, though it won't do any good. They're both flaming liberal Democrats and of course, I received no reply.

Mr. Hewitt, I agree that there is not much hope that the Senate Republicans will vote against this spending spree the way the House did. However, I disagree that the government must pass a stimulus bill. The best thing they can do is cut taxes on people that actually pay taxes, including and especially businesses, and cut current spending. Growing the government never helps the economy!

Hush
Looks like the Senate already "folded." What unAmerican fools! They should be investigated for their lack of patriotism (right Michelle?).

"The economy is fragile and needs short term stimulus. There are many crucial projects that could be undertaken with a half trillion dollars [citation]."

Do any of you nutters think it's a little dishonest to write an article (an opinion article, at that) that cites another opinion article (that you wrote) as an authority?

Too big to fail
So the banks and the insurance companies are too big to fail? We have a choice. Let them fail, or let America Fail. There is no other choice. Read my blog at: newsolution.blogtownhall.com

I'm real
tired of hearing the pols say we have to get "SOMETHING" out to he people. That says it all, let's just get this garbage out there and take the weekend off.

The good ole reliable, back stabbing RINO's have shown up again to sabotage the peoples will.

If the repub party is ever to regain its viability now is the time to show strength and unified conviction and beliefs but alas they are driving the final nails in our coffins.

Sad day and more to come from this socialist Dem government.

No Representation in NorCal

Roadmaster
Remember, in order for Mr. Obama to have won, some conservatives (well, moderate conservatives) had to have voted for him. I know a few and they were expressing buyers regret the day after the election. Mostly, they thought they were making a statement against Republicans not acting like conservatives. They're avoiding me right now, which says a lot. I think they're very embarrassed and sad that they've done this to our country and possibly, some of them anyway, praying that the damage will not be as bad or as long-term as it looks like it will be.

..................
Look at the pieces of this devastating spending legislation........

$650 million for cable converters to digital. This is aimed at the poor, mainly minorities, in order to ensure that the propagandist drivel on channels 2 thru 13 continues to manipulate the views of these people. If channels 2-13 were right leaning would the democrat controlled govt be funding this conversion? Of course not.

The govt is going to expand its federal workforce as well as fund the expansion of democrat union industries. This is where card check comes in; this new workforce will be intimidated into voting for democrats or face retaliation.

Billions of taxpayer dollars have been allocated for healthcare for illegal aliens while doing nothing to stem their flow into the nation. Illegals are the very reason 80+ hospitals/clinics have closed all over CA in the last 10 years, lowering the standard of healthcare for everyone. As a mater of fact the democrats welcome non-white immigration violators, they're voters as far as the democrats are concerned. And by giving them our money they'll buy their votes.

The democrats are attempting to strengthen their base, by selling out America, to such a point that they'll make the Republican party no longer viable.

Only a Revolution will save this country.

Have you written your Senators yet?
I have. I know Mark Begich, newly minted Dem, is going to vote for it, but if he does, it will be an anchor around his neck that Alaskans won't forget in six years. I think Lisa Murkowski will vote against it. She likes bacon, but she also wants to be reelected. There'd have to be a LOT of pork in there for Alaska for Alaskan voters to agree to it and, history tells Alaskans, that there's probably some land or resource tie-up feature in there that will actually make us more dependent on the federal government just when we're poised to become less dependent if we get the gas pipeline going.

So, I've written mine, including the Democrat who I know is going to vote with his party. Have you written yours? Both of them? Because there's no use complaining about things unless you actually let them know how you want them to vote. Congress.org has their email addys.

Republicans are now conservative?
Wow, Never thought in 8 years the Dem's would spend so much, that the Republicans would get scared. Well democrats do have 8 years to make up for. And at least those Republicans are back to being conservative. So much for the socialist party and the much more socialist, socalist party.

What a travesty!!!
Slight pause here so the few Obama voters with a modicum of common sense can kick themselves in the rear and/or bonk themselves on the head....

How disappointing it must be to learn that the "One," the merciful, is an incompetent narcissist and bumbling boob! I think that's why he hired the Family Guy for a press secretary. That doofus makes Obama look brilliant.

Just sent $30 to Norm Coleman. He's in a mighty struggle for his seat because he was one of the wimpy Repubs. There still may be a thread of hope, but had Normy stuck to some conservative guns like Michelle Bachmann did, he would have won outright.

Then again, Franken would complete the ensemble - Moe, Larry, Curly and Shemp - known by their mommies as Hairy, Nancy, Barack, and Alfred.

Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk....

CaArchitect
I doubt McCain is going to vote for it. Graham was out in front of it saying it doesn't deserve the bipartisan label and MCain was exclusively negative about it with Greta on Fox. These guys see political poison if nothing else. They don't want to be explaing this one. It isn't virtue don't mistake me but it is obvious to McCain this will take people down and unless you are in a blue state you won't recover.

I only wish they'd all be gone by 2010!
Son, I agree that given what we know and have seen of most of the GOP, their ability to stand strong is so low that eventually they will roll over. I fear it is probably going to happen sooner than later. Obama will say, "See, we cut down the spending by $50B, and you all promised to compromise." John McCain will urge the GOP to "work with" the (D)'s, and the rest is history (and more taxes for you and me).

They're Already Bent Over
Will the senate fold? Are you kidding me?

Like the prostitutes they are, they will lie down and spread their legs for sure.

The first to assume the position will be those oh so tough talking GOP geldings.

Who says white men can't jump? See how high these cowardly white "men" jump when Obama says so.

They'll be gone by 2010.

You've got to love
Obama,Reid, and Pelosi's in-your-face style of leadership. I'm sure they are endearing the hearts of many Americans, I know I love 'em don't you? We have handed the reins of our government over to morons. Oh well, we were looking for change weren't we?

No "stimulus" spending
Well, this citizen will support no "stimulus" bill, unless by "stimulus" you mean tax cuts only. Let the people and institutions who have mismanaged their personal and business finances reap the fruit of their irresponsibility. Limit the government's involvement in private business activities to government's proper, limited role of deterring and addressing fraud, theft and contract breach. The economy, like a patient coming down with the flu, will bottom out and recover on its own, if the government just gets out of the way. Moreover, that would be the moral, Constitutional and American thing to do.

Bush
Obama does make the spending during the Bush years look conservative and fiscally responsible... and as a conservative, I was outraged at the spending during the Bush years. guess we went from the frying pan into the fire.
