Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

Those who listen to my radio show know that I spend my mornings and some evenings practicing and teaching law. For the 20 years since I left Washington, D.C., I have been a land use and natural resources lawyer, guiding landowners –principally home builders but also churches and commercial developers—through the maze of federal, state and local regulatory permitting that blankets the use of land in the U.S. I have had clients throughout the west, and this has meant appearing hundreds of times before city councils, county boards and regional and state commissions and agencies. It has meant thousands of meetings with elected and appointed local government officials.

I provide this as background to a few comments on Sarah Palin’s decade as a city council member and mayor of a small town, Wasilla, Alaska. Don’t underestimate the enormous benefit this provides the governor in the campaign and beyond as she takes up the duties of a vice president. Local government experience means an immersion in the real problems of real people as well as with a myriad of issues from the details of budgets for road maintenance and police and fire forces, to the land use issues I mentioned above, to parks and recreation and school construction issue issues.

And, of course, snow removal, the bane of many mayors' lives.

It also means appearing at thousands of the events that define small town life, from the Rotary to the start of the local fund-raising 5K, and the hiring and firing of staff that has to make the traffic lights work and oversee the trash collection.

And mostly it means being able to connect with people who look to the local government to get the big things in small towns right.

Sitting on a dais week after week and listening to public comments and presentations from staff is the least glamorous of all elected offices, but very central to the functioning of the republic. Hundreds of thousands of Americans serve in these all-but-voluntary jobs and do so out of a sense of public spiritedness. Of course there are knuckleheads among the local electeds, and I have encountered many of them.

But by a very large measure these mayors, council members and commissioners are genuine public servants –and they get very smart, very fast about the communities they serve and the real successes and failures that define American life, whether in Wasilla, Alaska or Dearborn, Michigan or Sharon, PA.

Spend a decade doing this work and you will have made tens of thousands of decisions –and votes—and seen the consequences of public policy decisions play out in a large way even though the stage is relatively small. And you will have developed style and insight into people and bureaucracy. And you will be skilled in performing in public.

All of which is a way of alerting the MSM especially that just because they have never been to a small town city council meeting doesn’t mean they don’t matter, or that those who participate as leaders in such settings haven’t picked up quite a lot along the way.

I fully expect to hear quite a few Sarah Palin speeches that include a paragraph that begins “When I was mayor of Wasilla”

The political and media elites have been laughing at Sarah Palin’s “small town” years. But every mayor and council member she meets over the next two months will have a bond with her that no one else on the national tickets can match.

Most commentators have figured out or soon will with the help of Beldar that she really, really knows the energy issue, and to a nation stunned by the sudden shock to their household budgets brought about by 30 years of indifference to new exploration, this will be a huge advantage. But so will be her experience with federal Endangered Species Act, which has been and remains central to my law practice and which interests very few other than those impacted by it.

In many key states --Colorado, New Mexico, Florida, Washington and Oregon to name just five-- the “ESA” has had devastating impacts on many industries and communities. When Sarah Palin led her state into federal court to challenge the absurd listing of the polar bear as a “threatened species” because of predictions about what might happen to the bears if what might happen to polar ice actually did happen, she took a stand that will trigger sustained applause in places and among people who are actually familiar with the workings of this extraordinarily onerous statute. As an avid outdoorswoman and conservationist, she has zero fear of environmental activists jeering about her indifference to nature. Her passion for the great outdoors will reawaken the TR tradition in the GOP and combine it with an experience in federal bureaucratic meddling with state and local governance that will put inside the Beltway a true property rights’ advocate. I haven’t seen reference yet to any specific experience witht Clean Water Act, NEPA or the Clean Air Act, but her familiarity with the federal hidden hand –the BLM, the USFWS, the ACOE—will be extremely useful as she campaigns across the country in communities hard hit by the expansion of federal regulation far beyond its intended and many believe constitutional limits.

The pro-life and pro-Second Amendment communities were immediately taken with Sarah Palin’s record. But there are other constituencies out there which will love what they learn about the Alaska governor.

The political pros all agree that votes for presidents usually turn on the question of which candidate is perceived to understand and value what that voter has experienced and feels. Reactions to the veeps typically do not enter into that calculation.

Sarah Palin may be different. To moms struggling to raise internet and text-messaging teens, to the parents of special needs children, to regular church goers, hunters and snowmobilers, Sarah Palin is already a friend.

She will soon be a friend to every land-owner bedeviled by complicated federal statutes wielded by remote and uncaring federal officials, and to the local elected officials across the country who appreciate exactly what it is that she did for that decade on the Wasilla city council.

Sarah
Sarah Palin has something to offer everyone: a love for family and children, especially those with developmental disabilities. She's full of goodness and has all the values that we hold dear. Sarah is politically smart and has such an enthusiasm and enormous love for her country which the idiot illuminati Democrats do not have. She truly is "one of us" and not "one of them". God bless Sarah Palin--and hope He gives us the common sense to elect her.

Sarah is "every woman"
There are one or more aspects of Sarah Palen that pretty much any rational woman can identify with. Heck, there are things rational men can identify with too! She immediately seems like one of "us", not one of "them."

When McCain announced his running mate, I was still in bed in that foggy state before you completely wake up and half listening to the TV...but when Palen launched into her speech, I was pulled out of that sleepy fog with a jolt because I knew I was hearing someone remarkably different, and above all, REAL! I'd never heard Palen speak before, knew nothing about her, but I immediately felt like a person I KNEW was speaking. She reminds me of me, of my mom, of my sister, of my daughter, of my friends. What a feat for a politician! Hillary was not someone all women could identify with, but Sarah it. She is "everywoman" in one way or another.

Thank goodness that someone with true American common sense has galloped onto the political scene. How refreshing! Thirty years in Congress can't guarantee common sense. You either have it or you don't! Sarah has already demonstrated that she has it in spades.

Obama is a socialist says IBD
Barack Obama was a founding member of the board of Public Allies in 1992 - the nonprofit group, which he features on his campaign Web site, as the model for a national service corps.

The Obamas WHO MADE 4 MILLION DOLLARS LAST YEAR AND LIVE IN A 1.65 MILLION DOLLAR, 6 BEDROOM, 4 BATHROOM HOME, discourage work in the private sector. "Don't go into corporate America," Michelle has exhorted youth. "Work for the community. Shun the "money culture," Barack added.

a Public Allies training seminar in Chicago describes as a negative byproduct of "capitalism, white supremacy, patriarchy and male-dominated privilege."

Obama wants to fully fund it and expand it into a national program that some see costing $500 billion. "We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded" as the military, he said.

The gall of it: The Obamas want to create a boot camp for radicals who hate the military — and stick American taxpayers with the bill.

To Matt who doesn't know Obama's history
You complain that Sarah Palin mocked "community organizers" in her nomination speech. Nonsense! She mocked Obama's paper thin resume and his CLAIM about the "wonderful accomplishments he achieved as a community organizer." "…A Boston Globe Newspaper review found that Obama was responsible for obtaining millions of dollars in local, state and federal subsidies for developer friends of his such as Antonin Rezko who built apartment that were so badly mismanaged they deteriorated so completely they were no longer habitable."

Cynthia Ashley, who since 1994, has lived at one of the 258 apartment buildings in Obama's district, Grove Parc, when Obama was a "Community Organizer," complained about the cold winds that came through the walls and having no heat... "No one should have to live like this, and NO ONE did anything about it!"

Sharee Jones who lived in a different apartment building, Lawndale, built by Rezko who funded Obama's first run for the senate with a large monetary donation and who helped the Obama's buy a home in 2005, had an apartment filled with rats. "No one would do anything about them," she complained.

A group of Lawndale residents gathered to rally against the Democratic candidate for the US Senate, Barak Obama."

This is the "community organizer" and non accomplishments Palin criticized and rightly so!

What will Palin bring to us?
Obama, Reid and Pelosi will give us stuff. Free stuff to fill our homes and our lives.

McCain and Palin will increase competition, and will encourage us to work harder and try for excellence.

So the real question to ponder is which group will make our country and our lives better in the next four years. The Bush record is mixed. Bush kept us safe but he tried to give us too much free stuff; pharmaceuticals for the old people and lots of Federally directed school testing for the young people. So the question is which is better, free stuff or free enterprise.

-Palin pick energizes base-

In the hills and hollows, up crick and down dale
Throwback revenants gnash teeth and send up a hail
The hicks from the sticks each one and each pair of
with a frenzied howl cry out for darlin’ Ms. Sarah
With a beating of drums and a blare of brass horns
The hillbillies and trailer trash are wailin’ for Palin!

i can not believe
it is absolutely mind-boggling to be that she poked fun of community-organizing.
no responsibilities?
really?
no democrat, or republican should ever cross that line.
i have no hard line, constant party affiliation. but i must say that she is syrupy, scripted, stiff, and judging by her remarks, stupid. i know shes not really stupid, but cmon...i gotta agree with the opinion of her usefulness as a great showhorse, but once you start fact checking her, theres not much there.
try it.

Hope for America!
Thanks to Mr. Hewitt, we know that America now has a bright future: a Vice Presidential candidate who understands municiple snow removal!
If nothing else, this ridiculous argument confirms the desperation of the radical right. After McCain impulsively flips a coin and picks a running mate whom he'd only met once, they've got to build her up somehow.
What else do they have? Oh, yes, I forgot another sterling qualification. As demented old
Fred pointed out in his burlesque at the convention the other night, Palin knows how to "field dress a moose." Rejoice, America! How many times have we barely escaped ruin, because the Veep lacked this crucial skill? Well, no longer ...
Not only would Palin shatter the "glass ceiling", she might establish another landmark precedent: the first pregnant Vice President. Since no one in her family seems to practice birth control, there's a good possibility that Vice President Palin would get knocked up during her term in office. Think of the possibilities. G. Bush Sr. puked in the lap of a Japanese leader. With morning sickness Palin could anoint dozens of dignitaries that way.
I say, let her take over the Dept. of Education too. She's eminently qualified: believes in Creationism, End Times theology.... American highschool graduates already score lower than kids from some third world countries. With Palin at the helm their training could be rounded out with a little Flat Earth and Noachian ideology, not to mention astrology? We should find out where she stands on that crucial issue! After all, didn't the wife of the sainted Reagan instruct his decisions on the basis of her astrologer?
Yep, things are sure looking up for the Grand Old Party!

VP Pick
Gee bobbit real imaginative response almost as much as your screen name. To Bruce from AZ you have alot of nerve comparing Palin to Lincoln. Go take a nap under a cactus. It doesn't matter that she has five kids or that she has one that has Down's. It doesn't matter that despite Palin's conservative background one of her daughters couldn't say no. It doesn't matter that her husband got busted 20 years ago. It doesn't even matter that Detroit has more drug addicts and pushers than Alaska has total population. It does matter, however, whether she used her influence as Governor to get someone fired - even if he was guilty of what she claims. It shows poor judgement and a lack of leadership. What does matter is that she may have to step in due to an emergency. That thought frightens me. I can't stand Romney but even he would be a better choice. As stated before - the only real choice was Huckabee. It's an opinion - we all have at least one! I worked on McCain's 2000 campaign when he was a true maverick. He has proven his poor judgement and lack of leadership. Sure, he is a brave and honorable patriot but not presidential. By the way I spent 24 years in the Air Force and have volunteered countless times for conservative causes - bobbit! Who knows maybe Ron Paul will run as an Independent.

Great experience --
You are so right. Does anyone really think that Joe Biden, after 35 years as a US Senator, has any real understanding of the day to day problems of everyday Americans?

In the rarified air of the Senate, protected by protocol, Joe can beat up people who are not in a position to fight back -- oil company CEOs, Supreme Court nominees, Indian convenience store owners, etc. He's a heap big Senator with all the benefits of incumbency -- almost impossible to lose his postion. He's got a big staff putting together tricky, grandstanding questions, and preparing position papers. And, he is never held accountable for any of his positons -- it's always the Executive Branch that is accountable.

In city government, your neighbors tell you when they think you are full of S***; you see the practical results of you decisions -- good or bad -- pretty quick, and you hear about them. You deal with all the key problems of the American people up front and personal.

This is a perspective that is sorely lacking in a government dominated by lawyers from Harvard and Yale who went right from law school into some form of government service.

Go, Palin!

DEMS., DIGGING DEEP, SARA CAN'T BE BEAT!
HOW TELLING IS IT WHEN THE ONE EYED OBAMACANS
HAVE TO JUMP TO WRONG CONCLUSIONS TO MAKE A CASE AGAINST SARA, THE ONE TO WIN FOR MCCAIN!
IOWA GOV.,TOM V. SOUNDED LIKE HE JUST ARRIVED FROM ANOTHER PLANTED ON MSNBC AND FOX TODAY.
PROOF THAT SOME DELUDED BIASED MINDS BELIEVE WHAT THEY WANT TO, NOT THE REALITIES. THOSE WHO ARE SO PRESUMPTIOUS, AT THIS EARLY VETTING OF SARA ETC., ARE FOOLISH OR BEING PAID TO MAKE MISCHIEF! GO SINCERE MCCAIN AND LADY SARA

Evidence of fear....
The fact that hardly anyone is even talking about Obama this week in the media concerning anything meaningful is evidence that the tide is turning in McCain/Palin's favor. McCain is ahead in the polls that matter (likely voters) and the convention hasn't effectively begun. I can't wait for the debates.

Grubby
A person who uses childish nicknames (dhimmicrats), speaks in initials (POTUS), and
calls himself Grubby is a person to ignore.

Higene
"The Palin pick was brilliant...for Dems."

You're actually right but not in the way you think. You believe, of course, that her selection now enables you to win the POTUS election in November.

In fact, quite the contrary is the case. With one selection, McCain, whose campaign was rather lackluster, brought his base back to life. He did more with this one selection than he could have with another $100M in contributions - now he will get both.

When the dhimmicrats lose in November, it will be the third time in a row. The benefit for them, if they choose to realize and take advantage of it, is that cheering for the country to lose in time of war; taxing, regulating and energy strangulating the economy; and bad mouthing the nation before the world despots and socialists while proudly proclaiming they don't approve of us; are not winning positions.

Maybe you dhimmis might then win a POTUS election - someday in the distant future.

Excellent Point, Hugh
Seldom do we actually get to the national stage a person who's actually had to live under the onerous and fascist laws and regulations the federal behemoth routinely cranks out. The political class simply manipulates their impact for personal political benefit (i.e. pay me or face the consequences).

It was the small town experience that gave Mrs. Palin the insight as to how the statewide big boys in AK (as well as the feds) were making life miserable for the locals.

When she tenaciously worked her way into a position to do something about the entrenched power brokers, despite their determined resistance, as Governor she acted against the corrupt regardless of whether they members of her own party, which, in fact, many of them were.

The people of Alaska know what she has been doing and overwhelmingly approve: as high as 90% and never lower than 80%. These are staggering, unheard of numbers for a statewide administrator.

Whether or not it will admit it, the GOP needs Sarah Palin's type of person if it is ever to regain the trust of vast numbers of its otherwise tepid supporters.

HIGENE
You're a perfect example of a cluless political numbnuts with a shallow and superfical understanding of American Politics...just the type of person to suffer from OBAMAMANIA...clueless beyond belief..you've probably already booked your hotel in Washington to see Obama sworn in...it will not dawn upon you that the"annointed one" has lost until that day in January...it would take the fertile mind of SHAKESPEARE to create a completely tragic and narcisistic character like the self deluded fool OBAMA...The imposter Obama is a complete loser..acomplete zero...actualy,he's not a zero,he's a minus!!
OBAMA THE MINUS MAN!!!!

DUKAKIS LIKE LANDSLIDE
AS I HAVE BEEN SAYING FOR MONTHS...THE GREAT PRETENDER OBAMA WILL BE DESTROYED IN A PATRIOTIC LANDSLIDE....DUKAKIS WAS 17 POINTS AHEAD TWENTY YEARS AGO AND STILL WENT DOWN IN FLAMES...OBAMA RECEVED A 6 POINT JUMP FROM THEIR CONVENTION...AFTER THE REPUBLICAN CONVENTION IT WILL BE ALL DOWNHILL FOR OBAMA...15 STATES OR LESS FOR OBAMA...NEW JERSEY,NEW YORK,MARYLAND,DEL,DC.,VERMONT,MAINE,MAS,CON,RD ISLAND,ILLINOIS,CAL,WASH,HAWAII AND MAYBE OREGON
THIS ELECTION WILL HAVE A VERY HIGH TURNOUT OF ONE TIME VOTERS,WHO RIDE TO THE REPUBLICS RESCUE IN A TIME OF EXTREME DANGER AND DESTROY THE MENACE OF BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA!!!

Fabius Cunctator
Yes you did say "tragedy," inre to Palin, over on M. Medved's blog.

And yes your narcissism post was fantastic.

Gov. Palin
Many of us in Illinois wish we had an ethical Governor and equally ethical Chicago and Cook (Crook) County elected officials.

Gov. Palin as Vice-President will set an example for all states to elect Governor --- individuals like Palin, Jindal etc.

Remember Obama is a political product of corrupt Illinois politics.

My congrats to the poster who stated:

"This is going to bring in all the Hatfield and McCoy votes, the pro lifers and all the freedom loving Americans in fly over country."

Like Babalulu used to say "sooooo rightttt!"

Fabius Cuctator
A little wait-n-see is bound to enter the discussion! Fine! But a "tragedy?!"

Look, I am just saying, I do not want the gov't between me and my doctor. Or between me and my car, or between me and my radio, or between me and my property, and esp. not between me and the majority of my husband's income! I don't even want my husband between me and his income! :D Palin has confirmed McCain's social and fiscal conservatism. She will absolutely confirm his foreign policy. I am not seeing a "tradgedy" here!

Is it kind of quiet, or is it just me?
Although, there is a resounding silence amongst the columnists so far, so I suspect there is a problem here with the Sarah Palin pick for VP.

Questions among the ultra-elite cons are fine, so long as they don't go Clintonian and start working against America's best interests, and working for their own party's defeat, just because of a little personal chagrin.

Wrat Wrangler
Fabius isn't a mole, he has just spent too many hours talking with lonestarblues and Bob Munck, and it finally GOT to him! :D

That Pesky Experience Thing
Oh, yes; that pesky experience thing. I have heard the Democrat knuckleheads begin to harp already that, because Sarah Palin is now McCain’s choice for Vice-President running mate, somehow the voices of those re-iterating the total lack of experience of B.H.O.’s executive, leadership, and payroll responsibility have thrown from the table the ‘experience card.’ No, not even a little bit, I say.
Let me begin with stating B.H.O.’s chief executive experience. Including the not-for-profit work alongside convicted terrorist Bill Ayers as co-heads of the Annenburg Challenge in Chicago he has next to zero knowledge or skill. Not-for-profit means – for those illiterate folks too lazy to consult a dictionary – No Payroll Responsibility. B.H.O. has never been a Boy Scout (in fact, he supports the A.C.L.U.’s litigation of them). B.H.O. has only used the nations’ taxpayer dollars to give to his Chicago-machine, gangster styled friends.
Sarah Palin, by comparison, has successfully run a home, a PTA, a city and then a state government. One must agree with Kevin McCullough – an essayist writing for Townhall.com – that this experience is more than Obama, Biden, and Hillary combined! Mrs. Palin had to deal with international issues (Canadian and Russian), she commanded the Alaska National Guard, stood up to corruption in her own political party, refused Federal money earmarked for building a bridge-to-nowhere, and returned money to the people of the state from oil company tax revenue! This is the kind of change I want and believe in.

Please read my blog at http://slowpokethecruiser.blogtownhall.com/ for a letter I posted from an unsolicited email from a friend of my family who happens to be a native Alaskan.

Yes Fabius Cunctater,
we are stuck with two no-surrender hawks, who have sons in Iraq, and we are stuck with two leaders who can't sleep at night over too much spending of taxdollars for garbage and entitlements.

A Mole revealed!!!
We have a mole! Flabius Dictator has been at it with a vengeance. The convention is starting so the sleeper breaks cover. Nice try.

Palin=McCain on foreign policy
The more I look at John McCain and Sarah Palin, the more I see two people with very similar political philosophies. She really is in his likeness, and represents what I think John McCain is most proud of in his own service.

I believe that of all the possible picks for VP, Sarah Palin is the most likely to carry out John McCain's agenda in office, either as VP, or as possibly having to rule in his stead. The rest of the VP candidates out there were too much institutions of their own, too different from what McCain stands for, and could go in any direction in the event of an emergency presidency. With Sarah Palin, a vote for John McCain is a vote for John McCain, and the voter knows what he is getting. Therefore, for me, this answers the foreign relations "experience" issue and the Sarah Palin choice. She will bear out John McCain's views and policies on Russian aggression, Iranian weapons capabilities, success in Iraq, and any other important issue. She therefore is a known quantity for me.

Oh, but so much more than that! :D

I have a crush on Sarah Palin
It's true. I have to admit it. I'll have to ask my wife if I cand put her poster up on our bedroom wall...

Great article!
I don't recall anyone being so excited about "Slow Joe" Biden being named Obama's VP choice. Maybe Republicans knew he was no threat. After all, he only got a few thousand votes in the primaries when he ran for president this season. He also fell flat four years ago when he ran. Nobody is impressed by Biden.

Now when Gov. Sarah Biden is named the VP choice of John McCain, there are heated responses from both sides, which means that he did make a great decision. Democrats hate her, and conservatives are rushing to her side. Who could ask for anything more?

Even the Democrats who are questioning her experience as qualifying her to serve as VP are forgetting that they never questioned the empty resume of John Edwards, the previous Democrat candidate. Sarah Palin surpasses all the recent Democrat nominees including Obama, Biden, Kerry, Edwards, Gore... We can go back further, but few Democrats who are propelled to the top of that party are as well qualified for leadership as Gov. Palin.

Let's not even consider voting for the empty suit the Democrats are presenting as the agent of change. He will only take your dollars and you can hope to get some of the change (coins, that is).

Remember Don Adams?
He was a 5'6" dweeby looking guy. He was also not only a veteran of Uncle Sam's Misguided Children but after Korea he stayed for two more hitches as an instructor in hand to hand combat. A Marine unarmed combat instructor, I don't care HOW slight and dweeby he looks, can send you on a long vacation in the House of Pain. Don't assume.

A COUPLE OF FRIES SHORT OF A HAPPY MEAL

.....WENDY ...

.....Back off the meth sweetie you're in a hyper orgasmic fit ...

.....If you are looking for butt jockeys, take a closer look at Obambi, tutored by a deviate and a frequent gay bar troller ...his main squeeze looks more masculine than most men ...sort of a James Brown with boobs ...

.....Bill Maher said both Matthews and Oberman acted like they wanted to have sex with the man (Obambi) ...personally I get a little nervous around men who are atractive to other guys ...not my cup of tea ...now Sarah, that's another story, she's my kind of woman ...is that your problem? ...are you jealous of her good looks? ...does she make you look like the bad side of a mud fence? ...

.....The only retard I see around here is you .....COLOSSUS

I have seen footage of Mr. Palin. His relationship with butts clearly does not involve kicking. With his shiny-eyed, toothy smiling and his beard, the only thing missing to complete the picture was the matching set of earrings. Oh, yes, Wendy's gaydar went off like a radiac meter at Chernobyl. The MSM is missing on the juiciest stories in that family, no question about it.

I don't have anything against gay people. I'm just saying. I bet Will would back me up on this.

Works for me!
You lib-trolls seem to think that we are all a breed of single-minded simpletons. We know that things don't always happen in the standard order. I'm a Catholic and we have a lot of brides with small but unmistakable "bumps". If we denied marriage to every girl who got the sequence wrong we'd never have another one.

As for the daughter, you're lucky Mr. Palin isn't in the same room with you or you'd need somebody to hold your jacket! At least THIS kid won't lie on a stinking pile of rubbish in a dirty hospital utility room for 45 minutes waiting to die. THAT was the fate of a Down's baby in a hearing where O'Vomit sat like a stone statue and showed even less empathy.

Palin's four month old
She has a four month old with Downs Syndrome, an unmarried 17 year daughter whose five months pregnant---and she's gonna run the free world if McCain lapses? What about the kids? Family values my arse.

Yes, "EXPERIENCE" is a must...
Yes, EXPERIENCE is a must. Sarah Palin has more experience in dealing with everyday affairs then O'bama and Biden together. I would surmise that if a number was identified by decisions, Palin would lead O'bama and Biden at a ratio of 100-1. Note: Sarah Palin's decisions have done very well for her constituents as defined by her 80% approval rating. What decisions have O'bama made or Biden for that fact, other then decide to misrepresent the truth to the American People. So the Looney Left (Communists) now attack her for lack of Washington experience. Well, I am glad she has no Washington experience. The experience that Washington provides has demonstrated over the last 100 years not to be of much value.

Imagine the Biden-Palin debate
Biden will take Palen's lunch money. Gender doesn't matter, Biden would outclass any potential VP pick who thinks they understand Russia because they live in AK. Biden would outclass any McCain Vp pick who hasn't a clue what the VP even does.

Can't wait for the Biden-Palin debate. I may even begin to feel sorry for Palin, but not for McCain.

Palin is easy on the eyes
Imagine crusty Joe Biden in a debate with the attractive Sarah P. Men are men, after all, and will be enamored with her looks. And women will get peeved when the mean old man starts picking on little ol' Sarah. Brilliant choice.

Palin may bring Change
Sara Palin, the Lady from Alaska could cause real change. Read the bio of Governor Palin. There is not much to dislike for the ladies or gentleman. If John Wayne wore skirts it could be Governor Palin. Yes, a person that could bring some earth moving changes on the political scene.

The changes are probably not what you think. Not a new governor riding in on a white horse to bring down the corrupt workings of Washington. Although a little housekeeping, like the California Governor was elected to do, would go a long way in Washington. No, something that could have a more long term effect.

Governor Sara Palin of Alaska could change the Democrat Party. Like hell you say. Yes I say. There is a strong possibility the good governor could tare away the hold that the Democrat Party seems to have on women voters..especially young women voters. As already mentioned her bio is impressive. A lady of true grit in the making. However, more important is the Democrat Party itself. The VP pick has more experience than Senator Obama. This has to sting at least, a little. Considering Senator Clinton also had more experience than Obama. Many women in the Democrat Party feel, with some justification, that the current, good ole boys, did a number on Senator Clinton. These ladies have some pay back for Obama. If it was short term OK. But, these changes will probably be permanent because the ladies have learned the hard way there is more wide open political oppurnity in the Republican Party than the Democrat Party. And, if you have strong political values, in the current environment, it does not make much difference if you are a Democrat or Republican.

But, these changes will probably be permanent because the ladies have learned the hard way there is more wide open political oppurnity in the Republican Party than the Democrat Party. And, if you have strong political values, in the current environment, it does not make much difference if you are a Democrat or Republican.

Hugh Hewitt for Veep?

Your column promoting the puffed-up attributes of Sarah Palin could well have borne the title of your 1998 book, "The Embarrassed Believer."

On the other hand, your list of credentials over the course of twenty years is quite a contrast. Why aren't YOU on John McCain's ticket?

TAFT
Of course governors and senators vote the same way. They either vote yea or nay or pass. The comparison is between Gov. Palin and Sen. Obama in their respective state houses.

entertaining and amusing

Fabulous! :D I'll be praying for her for the debates with Biden, though I don't think she needs it. Glad you have the music all queued up, for our enjoyment!

Palin
As several of our family sat in our son's family room, listening to the news about Palin, it was as if the rain had stopped and the sun was shining! That symbolism was what we were hoping for as we waited to get ready for our grandson's wedding. The rain did not stop immediately, not until the next day, but the next morning, the sun DID come out and shone brightly the rest of the day. That is what I feel having Palin will do for McCain and the Republican party. I think the wave of rain poured out on us by the Dems dampened us, but now the sun is shining and will surely dry up all that dampness. I think we have a winner!

Scared Libs & Repub Soreheads
I am amazed reading these comments at how petrified of Sarah Palin Town Hall's Lib trolls are & also how many sorehead Republicans there are here because Romney or Huckabee weren't chosen. To the pathetic Libs, STFU & go back to Daily Kool-Aide. Hal Doofass go back to Huffy Puffy were you belong! To the sorehead Republicans, grow up & accept your candidate lost. Your whining is starting to grate on the nerves & it makes you sound like the moonbat Libs here. Just remember, McCain could have picked a Lib Republican like Ridge or even Joe Lieberman, who I respect for his support of the war on terror, but disagree with on everything else. Conservatives are supposed to be above the cry baby tendencies of the Left. To John McCain, excellent choice & please dispatch NOBIDEN to the dustbin of history where it belongs come November 4.

Harold
Not so sure about your post.

"Washington, D.C.: Why don't reporters and legislators have a high opinion of the governor?

Gregg Erickson: It is clear that she has not paid much attention to the nitty-gritty unglamorous work of government, of gaining consensus, and making difficult compromises. She seems to be of the view that politics should be all rather simple. That often appeals to the wider public, but frustrates those who see themselves as laboring in the less glamorous parts of the vineyard.

Washington, D.C.;: You wrote: "If you took a poll of reporters and legislators I expect her approval rating would be down in the teens or twenties." What do they know about her that the general population does not?

Gregg Erickson: One example: The Republican chair of the Alaska State House Finance budget subcommittee on Heath and Medicaid says he can't find anyone in Palin's executive office who cares about helping bring that budget under control. He is furious with her about that. "

From an Alaskan
From another blog abbreviated to fit this format:

A friend asked an Alaskan: Do you like Palin as your Governor?

Sarah Palin is the US’s answer to Margaret Thatcher! Anyone who thinks she cannot handle the job or deal briskly and efficiently with ANY issue, including foreign governments … well, they haven’t met our Sarah.

Governor Sarah Palin is exactly what our US Government needs. She is ethical to a fault (if there is such a thing).

She brought Wasilla through a lot of GOOD changes and left it the 4th largest CITY in Alaska – with a stronger economic base than ever before.

She has EXECUTIVE experience *running a government as Governor and got there by defeating the *incumbent* Republican Governor, who was part of the “old school” in the pocket of the big oil companies. She won by a landslide without any money or help from the Republican Party.

Her approval rating as Governor of Alaska has been as high as 95% and is currently in the upper 80s.

Sarah cut spending in spite of the state income bump from high oil prices - she put a huge amount of the “windfall” into savings rather than spending, spending, spending - and has insisted on “honest, ethical and transparent governing.” The big oil companies thought she would be a pushover and have learned better.

Even the Democrats up here seem to like her - she works well with both sides in the Legislature here.

Need more? Jerry and I have for many years felt the best “vote” was to vote for the lesser of two “evils.” During the last Governor’s race was the first time EVER that we actually asked for, not just a little sign to put in our yard showing our support of our candidate we asked for a full 4' x 8' sign: “SARAH PALIN FOR GOVERNOR!” She hasn’t let Alaska or us down. She will do the same for the USA if given the opportunity.
Feel free to pass this on to anyone who may be interested (and spam those who aren’t!).

Mrs. Paddy
You are the nicest blogger. I didn't mean literally, I was just poking fun at Hillary's "clouds will break the sun will shine down an everything will be ..." when she was making fun of Obama. I know you don't plagiarize.

Taft
Was that a Hillary quote? It is a pretty common idiom. Similar to a quote from the play A Raisin in the Sun that talks about a rainbow after a rain, but I digress.

Since I rarely listened to Hillary, any similarity to one of her statements is purely coincidental. Had I been quoting her deliberately, I would have given her credit for it.

Palin By Comparison
McCain's choice is a breath of fresh air. To build a tad on Hugh's excellent points, the fact that her performance as mayor led to successfully running for the governorship is nothing to sneeze at either. But what I like most, so far, about the lady is her feistiness when taking on federal issues and I believe it will serve well the people of this Nation.

Oh boy
"This is like seeing the clouds part and the sun shine through following a storm."

Your stealing Hillary's material.

Amen, Mrs. Paddy!

So you are a lawyer, don't brag about it

Hugh, you mentioned you are a lawyer, and act as one from time to time. I have heard the advertisement on your program where a lawyer proposes to lie and cheat and get a guilty drunk driver declared innocent.

Now he can go out a kill some unlucky person, who does not have a lawyer standing between him and the car driven by the guilty drunk, who was declared innocent by a lawyer who is actually a traitor to our country.

Lawyers all have been trained to lie and ignore the law, and ignore common sense. If you don’t believe that, what about the defense lawyer who gets a guilty man acquitted, or a prosecutor who gets an innocent man declared guilty.

They care nothing about what is right or wrong, only what affects their ego and wallet.

Most lawyers don’t like the idea of a Justice System especially when they are the so-called defense attorney. They want their client found innocent, even if he is guilty. No way does a defense lawyer want Justice — that is, convict the guilty, acquit the innocent.

McCain
and PALIN!!!

This is like seeing the clouds part and the sun shine through following a storm.

Check out my blog for the latest parodies for PALIN!

For all of us who felt like this election was to be endured, and hoped that the next four years would set up a revitalization of the Conservative Brand....John McCain has accelerated the process.

Four years from now, we will have an experienced VP poised to step into the White House. For all of you who wouldn't vote for John because of his 'Maverick' ways, perhaps you will look at the long-range picture now. Let's start thinking about 2012 TODAY!

What better way to energize our nation (pun intended)!!!! What better platform than to rein in out-of-control spending, and out-of-control regulations that are killing our economy? THAT is Change I can get behind. That is change I can believe in.

McCain/Palin 08 ENTHUSIASTICALLY!

Left blogs
The left are preparing their attacks on Palin. After "troopergate", they plan on outrage that Sarah travelled from texas to alaska after her water broke.

C'mon
>returned money to the people of the state from oil company tax revenue!<

You listed plenty of things about Sarah Palin that would make one feel confident in her abilities and qualities.

However, giving her credit for a policy that has been in place in Alaska for decades only shows a lack of reality-based thinking.

Lincoln did not descend from Olympus
NOR from a log cabin!!! He was ASHAMED of his background and did all he could to hide it. He had become a wealthy corporate lawyer before he won election in IL. His enemies kept bring up his log cabin childhood so his friends turned it around to appeal to the masses.

He was a smooth-talking biz mouthpiece with a good line. Then he walked smack into that now famous wall named "Destiny".

Do governors vote the same way a senator does, I don't think so, and funny enough, when compared to McCain who missed far more than Obama, it seems even less an issue.

"Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) remains the most absent member of the Senate, beating even Obama. McCain has missed 63.8 percent of the votes in the 110th Congress; Obama has missed 45.5 percent."

Sarah Palin & the "Ancient Mariner"

HUGH HEWITT writes again that Conservatives are thrilled with the selection of Sarah Palin as John McCain's running-mate.

But Sarah Palin notwithstanding, the head of the Republican ticket is still John McCain, the SAME John McCain whom Hewitt blasted mercilessly during the campaign for the Republican nomination.

In his column, "The Climb and Decline of the Ancient Mainer," Hewitt wrote: "Even the McCain enthusiasts watch this aging warrior and know that he could no more win in the fall than Dole could in '96. Politics is not exclusively a young man's game, but it is most definitely not an old man's game either."

"A GOP vote for McCain is a vote for a shattered base and a desultory campaign in the fall. It is a vote for lecture after lecture on global warming, campaign finance reform, and the bridge to nowhere. It is a vote for an old warrior way past his prime..."

Hugh Hewitt wrote that column on Jan. 11, 2008. John McCain is eight months older now; if he was too old to be President in January what is he now?

On Jan. 17, 2008, Hewitt wrote: "John McCain is running as an anti-conservative. .... I don't doubt McCain's sincerity on ANWR or a dozen other issues, BUT I AM CERTAIN HE IS NOT THE MAN TO LEAD A REPUBLICAN PARTY PLEDGED TO MANY THINGS WITH WHICH HE NOT ONLY CANNOT AGREE BUT ABOUT WHICH HE CANNOT EVEN IMAGINE DISAGREEMENT,

Hewitt also wrote: "GOP activists and conservative loyalists have been poked in those eyes too many times by Senator McCain over the past eight years to lose the memories of those assaults."

Hewitt's words apparently are easy to forget, so hard to remember.

One must agree with Kevin McCullough – an essayist writing for Twonhall.com – that this experience is more than Obama, Biden, and Hillary combined!

Palin by Comparison
What a Contrast. Gov. Palin who was present and voted and Sen. Obama who voted "present".

Hawkeye58
I messed up big there all right.

What about her "Small town Neighbors?"
I'm reading remarks that Sarah Palin "alienated her small-town neighbors." Decision making and possible dissatisfaction among some comes with the position of leadership. Yet, she's had a 90% popularity rating as Governor and was Mayor of her town from 1996-2002.
Being elected and reelected doesn't look like alienation of one's public to me.
Hey, you nutty Libs, you have a problem with success? It sure looks like "Sour Grapes" to me.

Let's settle this
The fairest way would be a winner take all arm wrestling contest between BO and Sarah. Mr. Smoothie would get the worst of it beyond a doubt. A consolation match with Michelle might be even more interesting.

Matthew and Robert
Both offer pleasant and convincing pro-Palin posts and time will tell, hopefully before the election. There are, as I said to Dwayne, some serious issues that need to be ironed out. Thanks

As incomprehensible as the above paragraph is, I was able to discern that taft thinks the capitol of Alaska is Anchorage.

CORRECTION
Meant to say:

It seems highly unlikely that Palin would have enjoyed any measure of power necessary to insulate herself from scrutiny, especially if she had managed to alienate her small-town neighbors. Stranger things have happened.

A few points for Taft et al
Whatever part of Palin's house might be made of glass would have presumably withstood a barrage of rocks as she took on her own party over corruption. There are always going to be a few Elliot Spitzers and J. Edgar Hoover's who manage, perhaps due to cover from political allies or other sources of political power, to play the reformer while living a secret unreformed life. It seems highly unlikely that Palin would have enjoyed any measure of power necessary to insulate herself from scrutiny, but stranger things have happened, especially if she had managed to alienate her small-town neighbors. Again, she took on the status quo in her own party, which would leave her few places to hide if she has her own roster of transgressions.

As for "sausage making", you flatter the Democratic-led legislature. Thus far, the only meat-related activity one might detect in the deliberative chambers would seem to be doling out the pork--unless you wish to count hiding the sausage...

I will forgive you for uttering the sainted Mr. Lincoln's name with the Democrat nominee in the same breath. It will be hard, but I can do it.

Mr. Lincoln had what I call horse sense and he was NOT part of the Chicago machine. The same cannot be said for that charlatan running now.

SARAH EARNED HER STRIPES

.....Unlike most politicians who jumped from Law School into politics ...Obama, Biden, the Clintons and that lovable scamp, John Edwards ...

.....Sarah first came to my attention when she callenged in Federal Court the Interior Dept's ridiculous attempt to put Polar Bears on a protected list ...while the Bush Administration curled up in a fetal position and sucked their thumbs ...this woman was out their fighting against this nonsense ...

.....I knew then and there that the Country needed this woman in Washington ...she won my vote .....COLOSSUS

Interesting
Many of the libs are afraid of Palin. She is the last one they expected to get the nod, and now they are working overtime to discredit her. People like Badgerboy will rant about the "scandal," and all that will do is draw more attention to all of Obama's baggage (he has more than a luggage carousel at O'Hare on a busy holiday weekend).

The conservatives who are bitter about Romney having lost the presidential nomination and then not being picked as VP are also becoming tiresome. I also voted for Romney in the primary, and I was most unhappy with McCain getting the nomination. I thought Romney may be picked to run as VP (but I was not that hopeful). It is tough when things don't go our way, but harping on it doesn't help. Becoming indignant and hoping for a loss on election day (a win for Obama will be horrid for the country) is nothing more than quitting the pickup game just because your team didn't get first pick and now you're behind because you didn't get the tall guy.

Palin's Experience vs. Obama's
Okay, I'll play your game. You list one of Obama's accomplishments and then I'll list one of Governor Palin's . . . and so on . . . and so on.

On second thought, I'll start off: A city council member and mayor makes decisions on how taxpayer's funds should be used for their communities WHILE complying with complicated federal, state and local regulations. As Governor of Alaska, she has negotiated with both Canada and Russia over fishing rights, gas pipelines and other issues. Your turn!

Let the Demos keep
making fun of small town Americans. They vote and I used to live in a small town. The Demos are out of touch with real Americans and real people. Maureen Dowd is a moron when she calls the great state of Alaska an "oversized igloo". Alaska is an important state because of its resources and proxmity to Russia. Libs watch out!

Spot On, Hugh !
I've been grinding, touting & pushing Sarah for Veep for 2-months on your blog-threads. GAWD, I'm thrilled about this choice! She will light up the skies with excitement. Heck, in my own home, I've witnessed a never-before-seen energizing from my entirely NON-political wife. She's already mailed money to the campaign...BEFORE Mr.Political Junky Neo! Can't tell you what a "weathervane" and seismic event this is. WOW! Johnny Little finally crashed out of the long list of ways to frustrate and pi** me off. Me and my pocketbook are aboard...But, far more telling: Missus Neo is Fired Up on politics, possibly more than baseball. This is unprecedented in the Neo Household! GO, Sarah!!

Dwayne in Wisconsin
Have a great day and thanks for the information.

Sarah Palin is
not a lawyer, so she does not have years of formal schooling in how to be a crook. She has a history of confronting and whooping crooks.

Her youngest child will have a history of making better and smarter decisions than Obama, Biden, and every other Dementocrat can ever hope to have.

Don Juan
You could also mention McCain's foreign policy advisor, Randy Scheunemann, whose lobbying firm received from the Georgian President nearly $1 million dollars. Now McCain says "were all Georgians."

Taft
She comes across like she could be your next door neighbor, which makes her very likable. I hope the drive bys try to come down hard on her, I guarantee that will come back to bite them, because every time they go negative on her, all those "she's just like me" people are going to get angry. Whatever the case, it's going to be fun to watch over the next two months. Have a great day, gotta go.

Dwayne
You have a convincing argument and I'm sure your cousin is right, but there are still lingering questions that will be, I hope if the press does their job, need ironing out. I've read about some of the stuff that went on when she was mayor, of, I might add, if you blink as you drive by, you'll miss it. Also, there are questions about just how will she fights corruption, and I'd love it if she really does, like the bridge to know where. I've read that she was really for it before it became obvious it wouldn't sell to the federal government.

Experience is overrated
Typically, the longer a politician is entrenched in a position, the more unapproachable and more cynical they become.

While I would disagree with Hewitt that Palin's experience in a remote and barely representative part of the US is a resume for success in Washington, I would argue that it doesn't matter.

The differences between Wasilla and Southside Chicago are like two completely different countries. What this country needs is not the same failed approach to decaying innercities by the same innercity politicians, but fresh approaches by people who have not succumbed to the cynicism of a nanny state.

That's what Sarah Palin represents to me - a fresh look at the nation's problems from someone without preconceived notions garnered from years in Washington or even a lower 48 state capital. It's the fact that she comes from an isolated, somewhat insulated political arena, rather than her experience, that I find exciting.

Taft - Reality Check
Her approval rating is over 60%. If she'd have done a bad job as Mayor, why would she have been elected Governor. My 1st cousin is a nurse in Anchorage and says they all love her up there. But yes, when you are trying to fix corruption, even in your own party, you are going to tick a few people off. Sometime you have to stand up for what you think is right, even if that means going against your own party. That's why a lot of Rep's hate Mc. But he is popular enough to get the nomination because enough people respect him for having the balls to stand up for what he believes, be it popular or not. It won't even be close in November, Mc will win by 30-40 electoral votes.

Dwayne in Wisconsin
Just consider though, what happened when she was mayor and governor. She didn't leave a very good impression on the Wasillis, and the folks in Anchorage, where the gears of government are spun, whe been more a money wrench than the golden girl as being broadcast.

Well stated Hugh!
As a self-employed land surveyor (and a 12 year Army vet) in Wisconsin, I deal with mayors and city councils regularly. Also with the DNR and the numerous other agencies with regards to land use. I believe the executive experience gained by Sarah's time as mayor and Governor put her leaps and bounds ahead of Obama. If Sen. Mc has the worst happen to him in office, I would be happy to have her be my President. Also, just as importantly, I'd be happy to have my oldest son, who just enlisted in the Army, call her Commander in Chief! Not so with "The Obamination". Keep up the good work Hugh, I listen to your podcast every day, you're my favorite. (I also listen to #2 is Dennis, #3 is Rush, and #4 is O'Reilly) Although, I have to pay for Rush and O'Reilly. If I had to pay for yours, I would, and I'd have to dump O'Reilly. It'd be close between Dennis and Rush, but Dennis discusses other helpful issues and Rush's head is so big, I'd have to go with Dennis. You Town Hall guys are the best. (Feel free to use these statements to push for a raise! Tell them you'd be happy to settle for half of what Rush gets). God Bless.

Small towns are just big cities
Small towns have the same issues as big cities, they just don't have the numbers. As an elected DA in a rural state, I found that to be true. My district had child molestation, drug trafficking, domestic abuse, murder, theft, etc, etc. I also sat on the town zoning board and the chamber of commerce, as well as the economic development board. If anything, it's even harder to accomplish things in small towns where there is a small business base. We spent a lot of time trying to attract business to our area. Oblahblahma wants to discourage business. I guess the small towns could all just get on the government teat, but eventually that teat will run dry. My point is, making fun of Palin because she was on a small town council is not a winning point. There are a LOT of small towns out there, and the people are used to a scale of government where they know the people on the council, etc. What do they know about what Biden does all day? Spend the hard earned money of people he doesn't know. And hold hearings to place blame on others for the failed policies of Congress. HAH. That don't impress me much. Who sang that?

Not All Feminists/Dems are Anti-Palin

as is proven out by visiting the following pro-Hillary Clinton site

http://www.hillaryclintonforum.net/discussion/showthread.ph p?t=26179

and seeing what her supporters are saying about Ms. Palin.

Conservatives, you will be astounded and very pleased.

And there must be much weeping and gnashing of teeth in the Obama camp, for they have no effective counter to what Ms. Palin brings to the party.

Let's not forget that political "armies" run on the "mother's milk of politics" - MONEY, SO NOW it's time for you to CONSECRATE your enthusiasm for Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin by sending them a fat check to fight NObama! I did. I sent a $1,000 Sunday morning. Do something! Do it NOW!!!

The NObamanation must be stopped at all costs. Imagine the havoc NObama and DEMocRAT majorities in Congress could wreak on the Supreme Court, our national security, our tax code, etc.??? Stop talking and start ACTING!!!

A modern-day Lincoln
Let us not forget one of our country’s finest presidents, Abraham Lincoln, who, like Sarah Palin, had little elected political office or foreign experience prior to becoming president of the United States of America, and yet the inexperienced Lincoln quickly proved to be one the most extraordinary leaders in our nation’s history while it was split asunder by a bloody civil war. And the similarities between the two are noteworthy: honest, high moral values, ambitious, frontier pluck and grit, hunters and athletic, no strong ties to Washington or connections to unsavory characters or confederations, Republicans, a parent, commoners who hobnobbed primarily with other commoners, worked in white and blue-collar jobs, born of undistinguished families, fighters against corruption and indignities, a belief in an Almighty, self-made, and conservative.

Palin has all the makings of becoming another Lincoln in modern-day America—what’s not to like about that?

Contempt for Obama
The contempt for Obama on Townhall should not mean that all common sense be lost in a haze of hatred. IT IS OBVIOUS that Palin's choice is politics--not what is best for us. Mitt Romney is less qualified than Palin? People wake up---McCain has lost it.

SHE IS A HUGE MISTAKE AND WILL TURN INTO A LIABILITY REGARDLESS OF THE FROTHING OVER HER NOW. SHE IS NOT BEST FOR AMERICA--NOT QUALIFIED TO LEAD THE UNITED STATES!

Palin's a mistake
She is massively unqualified to take over from the 72 yr. old, if God forbid, something happened to McCain. This is the identity politics we abhor. As the first major decision of McCain it speaks loudly to his recklessness.

Palin's life is a great story. But the VP with a four month old and not even two years as governor of Alaska--c'mon, who are we kidding?

McCain has placed politics over all else, including our security. He is not fit to be president.

Diogenes calling the wrong one "liar"
The key to understanding Diogenes' posts is this:

"Sarah's problem, which is being totally ignored by TownHall columnists, is that she's a rank amateur who hasn't been able to get along with the Republican majority or minority leadership in the Alaska legislature. "

Yes, she hasn't gotten along with the Republican leadership -- she deliberately exposed them as corrupt bureaucrats and hypocrites, leading to their ouster, and she continues to send corrupt politicians from her own party packing.

In response, of course, they don't just shuffle away with their tails between their legs. No, they dispatch slime jockeys like Diogenes, here, who recite every possible negative in the hopes that Palin will go down in flames -- so they can get their power back.

Thanks for showing up, Diogenes, and reminding us why we need the Sarah Palins of the world, and why we should not believe every negative thing we hear about them.

(Unrelated to this topic, please visit my political blog, "Plumb Bob Blog: Squaring the Culture," at http://www.plumbbobblog.com. Click on my nickname and follow the links on my townhall blog. Thanks.)

Sorry to disillusion you
I am a former residential property owner in Wasilla whose land was downzoned during Palin's tenure. Unable to afford a Hugh Hewitt, I had to sell it for a quarter of what it was actually worth, and the buyers got it upzoned afterward.

Sarah's problem, which is being totally ignored by TownHall columnists, is that she's a rank amateur who hasn't been able to get along with the Republican majority or minority leadership in the Alaska legislature. She has filled Commissioner and Attorney General posts with friends, high school buddies and church members from her small town.

The first thing that she did on national television was lie about having stopped "The Bridge to Nowhere." She was a supporter of the Gravina bridge which was dead before she took office.

She is also lying about trying to get her ex-brother-in-law, a state trooper, fired. Apparently she's never heard the Watergate and Monicagate dictum, "It's not the crime; it's the cover-up."

She describes her husband as a "blue collar" steel worker. He's been a manager for many years.

She will cost McCain the election.

Thanks Hugh, from all of us real...
"community organizers" . Along with the Sarah Palin's of the world who serve on the PTA there are hundreds of thousands of us who give one night a month to our neighborhood associations, who go to community policing/neighborhood watch nights, who attend open meeting after open meeting on growth management, land use ordinances and city council deliberations.

We aren't paid the equivalent of $45,000 a year in todays money as Obama was the year after he "left corporate America" for his second job in real life, our spouses aren't given a raise of $175,000 (for a yearly salary of $300,000) when we are elected to the Neighborhood Association Council because our employer knows they'll go to the top of the earmark line when the Senator bothers to show up for work instead of running for the next highest office on his resume.

Sarah Palin in fact, gave up a $125,000 position because of corruption on a State committee, a position she earned by doing all of the above community service and more. That McCain recognized her dedication and integrity (in spite of the trumped up charges by a cya bureaucrat who should have fired that "Don't tase me I'm a 10 year old!" step-dad, ex-brother -in-law long before anyone of the Palin family was forced to call him) is all the more reason I'm happy to vote for him when I wasn't before.

Badgerboy
You say the only reason Palin is on the ticket is because she is a woman, well I would say the only reason Obama Mama is on the ticket is because he is Black. Affirmative action at its best. At least Palin has some experience.

Jnik, if that's the BEST you can do
To try to help the scared to death of Sarah Palin libdolts make a case against her, you'd better give it up and go back to your bong.

You're wasting space here where serious adults are trying to have a serious discussion.

I'm VOTING FOR SARAH ....

She is the best thing since sliced bread!
Sarah is the founding fathers vision in a skirt.( I'm female so it's not sexist)

Palin/? 2012

Well Badgerboy, have YOU noticed Pt. 2
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/0 8/30/AR2008083002366.html?hpid=topnews

The trouble between Wooten and the governor's sister broke into the open after an alleged incident in February 2005. Palin told an internal affairs investigator that she overheard on a speakerphone Wooten arguing with her sister and threatening to kill their father. Fearful for her family members' lives, Palin said she drove to her sister's house and watched the argument through a window.

"Wooten's words were, 'I will kill him. He'll eat a [expletive] lead bullet, I'll shoot him,' if our father got the attorney to help Molly," Palin said in an e-mail she wrote in August 2005 to the chief of the state police. "I heard this death threat, my 16-year-old son heard it (Track Palin), Molly heard it, as did their small children. Wooten spoke with his Trooper gun on his hip in an extremely intimidating fashion, leaving no doubt he is serious about taking someone's life who disagrees with him."

that the "reformer" Governor is under investigation for using her office to try to get her ex-brother-in-law fired from his state trooper job?

That ASP/AHP Trooper Mike Wooten should have been fired a long time before Sarah Palin became governor?
Or did you not bother to dig for more facts than the Democrat talking points people put out regarding the matter?

I'm guessing you didn't, so here a few facts for you to stew on.

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080830130759A AjO7TW

Trooper Wooten:
-- Threatened to kill the Governor's father if he obtained a lawyer for her sister.
-- Used a Taser on his stepson.
-- Drank beer in his patrol car.
-- Was written up 7 times prior for negligent damage to a state vehicle; reckless driving; receiving a speeding ticket; illegal hunting; and being consistently late to work and conducting personal business on duty.

My, what a sterling examplle of good work by a member of the Alaska Highway Patrol.

On top of that, Governor Palin herself, her son Track, and a few others HEARD Trooper Wooten make the threat against the life of Palin's father.

Teeny-Tiny Convention Still A Thrill
Even though the GOP will only have a mini-convention next week, I expect it to be exciting and action-packed. What a thrill the remainder of the election season is going to be! Governor Sarah Palin is going to be marvelous, and the VP debate should be the best debate of all. She knows what she's talking about, and she's articulate enough to get her point across quite successfully. Governor Palin will do a fine, fine job as VP.

Accomplishments vs. "Experience"
Ask any Obama supporter, "What are his major accomplishments?" They can't name any, because he has none. Sarah Palin, however, has quite a list, particularly in the areas of "change" and "reform", which Obama claims as his forte and the centerpiece of his campaign.

Therefore, Republicans should start posing the question as, "Who is more ACCOMPLISHED?", not "Who is more EXPERIENCED?" Phrased this way, the question aims the listener at Obama's #1 weakness – his virtually complete lack of accomplishments. Further, it makes people wonder why we have to compare the TOP of the Democratic ticket to the BOTTOM of the Republican ticket, in terms of experience or accomplishments.

John McCain has chosen an ACCOMPLISHED, reformist governor as his running mate, further entitling him (not Obama) to the "change" or "reform" mantle. The Democrats have an UNACCOMPLISHED presidential candidate. His only accomplishment was getting some asbestos out of a housing project in Chicago, as far as I can see. That's noble, but doesn't measure up to what Sarah Palin has accomplished.

Hal Doofass
I'm breaking my rule of not replying to an idiot like you just to say that THE ONLY ONE who's parade is getting "rained on" is OBLAH BLAH BLAHma's.

But don't feel bad, it's all for the best. HE IS NOT QUALIFIED to lead this nation anywhere.

Taft, Re: Your post #21
I'll put Sarah Palin in a stare down contest with Putin any day and bet on her to come out the winner.

Put Obama in the same stare down and that empty suit would back down and run away the second Putin spoke.

And as for an "Iraq Exit Strategy" that is not the job of the VP. I believe McCain has already stated his exit strategy, "We leave when we've finished the job successfully."

I know that winning a war is a foreign concept to loser libs like yourself. But that's the only way to play that game.

Insane
The fact that someone has to write a column about how being the mayor of village (two years ago) is terrifc experience for being President of the United States (in five months) shows that this selection is going to collapse under its own weight. Yes, when you vote for a presdient, you are voting for two presidents. Thank God there are at least a handful of conservative commentators who are flabbergasted by this insane pick.

Sarah Eagleton anyone?

OOPS, My bad
In my last post, #33, I forgot to conplete the thought I was working on in the second sentence of the second paragraph.
It should have read:

And it has you libs, and don't think for a minute that your screen name containing "Conservative" fools anyone, scared out of your minds to the point there's nothing you won't say to try to minimize Palin's qualifications in the minds of the public.

Sorry about the error/omission.

Anyone notice...
that the "reformer" Governor is under investigation for using her office to try to get her ex-brother-in-law fired from his state trooper job? Or have you noticed all of the great things she and Ted Stephens have had to say about each other? It looks like business as usual in Alaska.

What about the blatant lie in her first speech? She was absolutely for the bridge to nowhere until after Congress decided not to fund it. Now she acts like she never wanted it. Typical Republican lies.

Looks like Hugh is doing his usual water-carrying duty, which is pretty dishonest. I know there are many reasons why conservatives like her but are you at least willing to admit that the only reason she is on this ticket is because she is a woman? If her name was Sam Palin, she would still be back in Alaska.

Governor Palin is the american story....
When one looks at the accomplishments of this 44 year old mother of 5 including an american soldier and special needs child. I can only say - Debra, the woman who lead the army in the bible - has made a come back! She is everything americans need at this time. When I learned she had given up the governor's jet and staff at the mansion because it was a waste of tax payers money and a distraction......I knew she is THE ONE. The one who will finally lead the rest of the DC politicians to stopping wasteful spending. All americans agree that spending in Washington is out of control and the debt needs to be managed and decreased. Governor Palin has done it in Alaska and she can do it in DC. What a GREAT AMERICAN and from McCain? Who knew McCain could give this country a leader better than Thatcher? and redefine American Pride once and for all. Let's all work hard to vote her into office. She sure deserves to be Madame Vice President.

I agree with you TN"Conservative"
I totally agree. Let's get McCain to step down and put Sarah Palin at the top of the ticket.

I'm fairly certain that's NOT what you meant, but if I could that's what I'd do. In the mean time we've got McCain as our top candidate and Sarah Palin as his second.
And it has you libs, and don't think for a minute that your screen name containing "Conservative" fools anyone.

Most of the posts I've read by you are about as Conservative as Wobbie/Ranger29 is a Captain in the Navy. NOT A BIT.

BEAUTIFUL point
Absolutely REAL and MEANINGFUL corrections to sloppy tendencies in MSM reporting.

But now I'm REALLY going to be pissed off with the "just a small town mayor" flavored dismissals.

Anyway, your point is supurb.

Oh, and did I fail to mention
The latest nationwide Zogby survey, begun Friday afternoon after the McCain announcement of Palin as a running mate, and completed mid-afternoon Saturday, show McCain/Palin at 47% compared 45% support for Obama/Biden.

So much for the Obama prime-time media-hyped Obamacropolis Convention spectacle and 84,000 drooling leg-tingling teary-eyed supporter circus roadshow, providing him a bump in the polls.

I think the Obama-Messiah better check the air in his tires and get a tune-up, cause he's running out of gas...

...and it's a long drive back to the south side of Chicago.

Not to worry, though...

...it's all downhill for him.

According to 8/30/2008 Zogby Poll
While 43% of respondents think Joe Biden will help Obama, 48% think he will either hurt him or make no difference.

52% of respondents think Sarah Palin will help McCain, while 39% think she will either hurt him or make no difference.

Overall, 52% said the selection of Palin as the GOP vp nominee helps the Republican ticket, compared to 29% who said it hurt. Another 10% said it made no difference, while 10% were unsure.

Among independent voters, 52% said it helps, while 26% said it would hurt. Women 48% say helps, 29% say hurts the GOP ticket.

Among Republican, the choice was a BIG hit- as 87% said it would help, and just 3% said it would hurt.

My Analysis: Seeing as McCain has been in a dead-heat with the Obama-Messiah throughout August, even before his choice of Gov. Palin shored up his party's conservative & evangelical base, planting us firmly behind his candidacy...

...the Gulf Coast ain't the only thing that's gonna feel like it's been swept over by a hurricane, when all is said and done!

Wasilla Mayor?? Could be a good thing!!!
Wasilla was a favorite stopping on my way from Anchorage to Willow Creek and some of the best Grayling fishing in the world in the Early 60's.I can't, of course say I know anything of her, but I DO know this!! THERE AINT NO WUSSIES In Wasilla.. I think I'm right that the Matanuska Valley (Palmer, wasilla, etc) was all part of a Depression Area "Resettlement" venture, one of FDR'S FEW SUCESSFUL projects..I suspect (and fervently pray) that the Lady will be OK!!! Have a GOOD DAY!!

moose droppings, taft
I'll take a PTA mom and local mayor who shows common sense any day over some robot spit out by the machanations of the typical party machinery. She is "Ms. Smith Goes to Washington" in real life, and it is about time we had one of those.

Obama promises to unite, but he has yet to vote against his party (he never voted on going to war in Iraq); Palin has made enemies in the Alaskan GOP by crossing the aisle to get things done.

Obama thinks a position on abortion is above his pay grade; Palin faced the decision of a lifetime and chose life.

Senator Obama is the cream of the sewers of Chicago politics. I'm not sure what rises to the top of the sludge, but I'm sure it isn't pleasant.

Hal
LMAO!

Don't Pay Any Attention
There is so much beauty in the McCain campaign's choice of Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska as their choice for vice president.

The initial appeal that Barack Obama had, in the eyes of the decent Americans in places like Iowa and Idaho, was representative of their disillusionment with career politicians and their seeming condescension towards middle Americans.

The Democrats, in an attempt to play on this sense of disenfranchisment, thought they could package Obama as a fresh face, uncorrupted by insider politics; a champion of the "little man."

But the exposure of his ties to the racist Trinity United Church of Satan & Jeremiah Wright, opened the floodgates to the eventual exposure of his ties to proud ant-America terrorist William Ayres, ex?-PLO operative Columbia University prof. Rashid Khalidi (who Obama & Ayres provided funding to), and convicted racketeer & Chicago influence-peddler Antonin "Tony" Rezko, washing away the sugar-coating the MSM and Democrat party had immersed this Great Pretender in.

Now he (and his party) has been reduced to telling the American people, ala the Wizard of Oz, "don't pay any attention to the man behind the curtain."

With McCain's selection of Governor Sarah Palin (and in the comparison), the Great Pretender will finally be exposed for the phony and false "hope" he really is.

Hugh
How about a follow up on your Dobson article? It seems God didn't listen to his requests for rain on Obama's convention but God certainly is raining on McCain's parade. Is this God returning 10 fold?

vonryansexpress
About that "sausage making."

In The Beginning
Great column Hugh!!!! One thing we may have forgotten is that our system of government was set up for representation of the people, by the people and for the people. Our politicians didn't spend their entire lives in the seat of government but went back and forth from their homes.

Sarah Palin is closer to the original picture of who a politician should be than anyone who lives and breathes nothing but the rarified air of DC. I hope she never forgets the reason she has been chosen and continues to be the voice of all of us.

Sixteen years of making sausage
The old adage that one shouldn't watch laws or sausage being made does disservice to the process of governance and regulation.

Gov. Palin's strong suit includes her time logged into the public record minutes, taken over the sixteen plus years of her public life.

The fact that she's done time with the suture and stitch of daily government makes her a natural to be president pro-tem in the senate.

Good governance skills are developed over time in settings that require adherence to form and respect for the rule of law. Gov. Palin's sixteen years in the business of getting the sausage made makes her a formidable and worthy vice presidential nominee.

1udagudguys
She is "authentic" and an out door, parochial, moose eating Alaska girl, not one who would be able to look into Putin's eyes or form an exit strategy to get us out of Iraq. Ironic, her one Iraq policy contradicts McCain's whole Iraq policy.

nice title ...
I had it on a blog post Friday. I'm assuming this is a case of great minds thinking alike (ahem).

I think the thing that scares the Dems the most (and they are scared; you can tell by the lengths they are going to try to undercut Palin) is that she is a normal person, not part of the traditional political machine.

They know that Palin will connect with people looking for something authentic, and they cannot manufacture it, they cannot match it.

No They Can't.

Palin vs. Biden on Fiscal Responsibility
Fiscal Responsibility:

Palin: By my count she has been responsible for the balancing of SIX budgets, five while mayor and at least one while Governor. Pehaps she was putting some of the final touches on Alaska's 2009 budget when she was selected by McCain. Number of pork-barrel earmarks: ZERO

Biden: as a US Senator, he has never had personal responsibility for ANY government budget. In any case, he sure knows how to vote for budgets that spend the next generation's money!

Number of pork-barrel earmarks in 36 years: I am not sure, but I am guessing it is not ZERO. I can't wait to see if Biden's fiscal record comes up when they meet in the VP debate!

Where is the outcry, McCain step down???
Palin is nice, but running mates don't matter if your candidate stinks.

You people getting yourself all excited are setting yourselves up for a fall.

McCain still stinks.

There must be an effort during the convention to get McCain to step down.

How will McCain win the South???
Contrary to what what northern liberals want to believe, we in the South appreciate strong minded women, leaders. The South you want to perpetuate is decades gone. How will McCain win the South? He just showed you. A conservative female running mate any Southerner would be proud to call Vice President and, ultimately, Madame President.

Joseph
Tell you what Joseph. Hugh and many others have listed a number of Palin's accomplishments in the political arena. Why don't you provide a list of Barry Hussein's for us? Take your time because it's gonna take a lot of imagination. Also while your at it why don't you list Biden's too. Feel free to include all of the executive experience they have along with whatever thin or nonexistent accomplishments you'll need to make up. You libs would love the experience thing to be taken off the table because your guys have none. ROFLMAO.

VP Pick
You have got to be kidding. What McCaain has effectively done is prove the Dems point - that he is a feeble-minded old man. He can forget the argument that Obama is inexperienced. He is but she has even less. The only real choice was Huckabee. Experience, affable, much better speaker than McCain. How will McCain win the South now? I cannot vote for Obama, but now I may, after 32 years of voting, sit this one out. McCain doesn't have a clue. At least it's a great photo op - Gramps and granddaughter.

Baraccuda Bumper
The NW rock band "Heart" has a song called "Barracuda." Just for a little fun, so you can be the first! :)

Hewitt by comparison, *****
Gorgeous op ed!

Sarah Palin's experience has been working at many levels of gov't, with real people, in a real republic. She has spent all her years of leadership positions dealing with people who were at cross-purposes with her, and yet she still did so much for Alaska in such a short time.

This, as opposed to Biden and Obama, who have been either marinating in the Senate with Party leadership, or living in an Ivy League echo chamber.

Thank you, Hugh!

Palin by Comparison
Great post Hugh! The east coast establishment doesn't realize the issues facing ordinary Americans in their ordinary lives. You've probably seen the article on Eleanor Clift's comments on this weekend's McLaughlin Group show where she stated that there was laughter in many newsrooms on Friday when McCain picked Palin. She has no idea of the laughter shared by those of us in flyover country when Obama picked Joe Biden. To think that some NE liberal who has spent 36 years in the DC establishment (although he does take the train every day) has any clue of the issues people face every day such as those you point out in the article, is a stretch.

Sarah Palin is an outstanding selection and will connect to the lives of ordinary Americans whether they're hockey moms, union workers, NRA members, or Right-to-Lifers. Her experience at the local and state level will mean more to people than 36 years in the US Senate listening to yourself talk. The only experience she lacks is community organizer.

Palin vis a vis Hillary
Palin is the real thing. Hillary and all other liberal feminists are fakes and frauds.

Palin built her own life, her own family and successful career. She's bold, gutsy, and can do.

Hillary and the others married men and trafficked on the celebrity and money of those men. They are useless leeches. They only espouse the goal of having it all. Palin accomplished it.

Hillary's so called experience is merely that of a sexual abuse victim. Her role was to pick up the underwear of other women from her own bedroom floor after her husband was finished. This is what she accomplished with all her education.

Hillary can't even drive a car! She admitted this during her campaign in Ohio when she sat in a car coming off the assembly line and couldn't figure out the interior controls. She said she hadn't driven a car "since her days in Little Rock".

This speaks volumes of Hillary, a women who bargained to feed out of the public trough in return for allowing her husband to bang other women. She whored herself out and she's been cast aside by liberal men, just as was done to the Kennedy women, the Edwards woman and the Spitzer woman to name just a few.

Palin will denutt that arrogant hair plugged gasbag Biden.

What about native roots?
Isn't Sarah's husband a least partly native Alaskan? Why aren't the republicans playing the race card? Not voting for Sarah is not only sexist it is rank racism at its worst!

Might be stealing a Dem talking point there!

The Opportunities are Many
Sarah Palin offers so many opportunities to rub the noses of the elitist left in their own rhetoric. I will try to be brief.

1. Another example of the GOP leading by example by naming another qualified woman to a prominent position should McCain win in November.

2. Demonstrating the difference between the requirements of holding an executive level position, the final resting place of the proverbial buck and making the "safe" party line vote in congress.

3. Being in a position accountability when the fan gets soiled, as opposed to the safety of a congressional office where you can hold a hearing in which to assign blame.

4. Being a product of accomplishments and actual achievements, all a matter of public record, as opposed to nothing more than lofty rhetoric.

The GOP and the McCain Campaign have a gold mine at their feet if they are wise enough to mine it, all while digging a hole big enough for the Obama camp to be unable to crawl out of.

Small Town Wonder
Hugh - you are right on with your small town analysis. Is it any wonder that the Obama camp must be having nightmares. They still believe that political campaigns are won in the smoke filled back rooms of the party elite.

I firmly believe that this election will be won in the small towns all across America.

GUESS ITS OK TO BE A PALIO-CONSERVATIVE?

It was a grest choice to pick Sarah Palin but theres one thing that bothers me.

The Globalist run this country and will not give up so easily. Was a deal struck in the
event that something were to happen and Sarah
became President?

Have they read Sarah the riot act and warned her of their intentions and the repercussions if she were to deviate. I truly believe the Globalists would have her killed in order to
carry out their agenda.

Although I enjoy reading what Hewitt writes from time to time....bottom line is this.. Newt Gingrich, Bill Kristol are both Neocon Globalists.

Question is this...why did it take them so long to find a true Conservative for the V.P. slot and to vett her? answer: They want to win....but what about when they win? Will they abandon the principles that Sarah Palin stands for like George Bush did? They knew what a true Conservative was all along but this Sarah Palin just might be a little more than the Doctor ordered...why? Initially, she supported Pat Buchanan and Ron Paul....which proves some since of maturity and sound thinking...So, I guess its ok to be a PALIO-PALIN-CONSERVATIVE NOW? HAHAHAHA !!!

BTW, Margaret Thatcher would have none of the Globalism the CFR is pushing...so, she was conveniently pushed to the side...Hopefully, Sarah will be like Margaret Thatcher and surprise her countrymen !!! Go Sarah...:O)

>>>>>>>>>>SARAH BARRACUDA>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

HH is spot on, of course!

Not only is it obvious that she has far more "executive experience" than Marxist Obama and Joe Biden PUT TOGETHER, she's stood up to the "big boys" and the "big corps."

And, just a little added benefit, once elected Gov. of Alaska, she went after the corrupt in her own party (now who ever heard of cleaning up one's own house???)

And, just as important, she'll come to DC without owing anybody or any group anything.

Admittedly, I'm still smarting over McCain's Amnesty Bill, but naming Gov. Sarah Palin as his VP is a good first step back.

McCain's decision to name Gov. Palin might just be the best decision anyone has made for our country in a while.

Hugh hits it here
One should also keep in mind that a small town in these remote locations is vastly different than a small town in the more populous States like CA.

The only candidate that the Dems had with as good a qualification as Sarah was Richardson and he could get no traction in the Socialist Party because he wasn't far enough to the left.

I agree being mayor and governor
are better training to be President (or Vice President) than being a "community organizer" (I am still not sure what that is exactly) and a member of the legislature.

Governor Sarah Palin is far more qualified than John Edwards was when he got the Veep tap. Palin is more qualified than Barack Obama and he is at the top of the ticket.

Hugh you nailed this one
I am the son of a farmer and timber worker who saw life forever changed by the added environmental regulation of the Carter years added to the mismanagement of the economy. In our small town, all three lumber mills closed between 1978 and 1981. A candidate who understands these issues and understands farmers, miners, fishermen, and timber industry workers and their concerns, and most of all who doesn't talk down to them, could have a big effect in states like Oregon (where I grew up) and Colorado and New Mexico....

She has seen the chaos of environmentalists run wild and also seen up close environmental horrors like the Exxon Valdez and so can be expected to bring a common sense down to earth approach to the issue that has been lacking.

I will never forget when Clinton and Gore held a timber industry summit in Oregon, people were so excited that a federal politician actually cared about the small town issues brought on by federal regulation, but it was just a sham. Beltway types don't get this issue, and it is a big big deal in the rural west.

Hugh, Precisely and ...
in a change election only one candidate has actually made changes to government -- only one. She puts the lie to the fact that conservatives are stuck in the past. Gov Palin used conservative principles to reform and change Alaska's corrupt government, and thereby garner approval of its citizens.
