Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

When Barack Obama told a Pennsylvania audience this past weekend that "We can't drill our way out of this," he was repeating the same line that Nancy Pelosi used days earlier and that Harry Reid used on Wednesday.

The Big Three Democrats are thus all agreed that their party has given up on bringing down the cost of oil and thus the cost of gas at the pump.

Because demand for oil isn't going to drop due to growth around the globe, the only way to bring the cost of a gallon of gas at the pump down is to increase the supply of oil. The only way to increase the supply of oil for the present is to explore for more oil and then bring it to market. That means drilling.

In the U.S. that means drilling on the outer continental shelf, more than 50 miles from the nearest coastline.

John McCain favors allowing states to do just that. Obama, Pelosi and Reid oppose it. To get the exploration underway a federal ban on such off shore drilling must be lifted, but House Democrats have blocked that move, most recently this very month. They and their presidential candidate would rather see your wallet bleed and American growth deteriorate than cross their political allies and contributors in the environmental movement. House Republicans should offer a new amendment lifting the ban on outer continental shelf drilling if the price of gas hit $6.00 a gallon. Democrats would still oppose it. Follow it with an amendment at $8.00 a galklon and then $10.00. Get the point across that the Democrats just don't care how high the price goes. They do not care about the impact on the average American family.

(The environmental activists, by the way, are seeking to use the listing of the polar bear as a threatened species to further impede oil exploration even where it is legal. Their agenda is to drive the cost of oil and thus gas to the sky to force you out of your car and America out of the economic growth business.)

The DDDs have three talking points: Exploration won't bring down the cost of gas very much. There isn't that much oil to find. And oil companies aren't using their existing leases anyway.

Both arguments reveal the DDDs as either ignorant or dishonest.

First, the announcement by the U.S. of an immediate move to begin outer continental shelf drilling would send oil prices downward and probably significantly as the speculators' premium vanished quickly. No one wants to get caught holding the contract for high priced oil when new reserves are discovered. Make no mistake, the refusal of Obama et al to push for outer continental shelf exploration is costing you a great deal at the pump this very day and every day the ban remains in effect.

As for the argument that the reserves are not that great, this ignores the entire history of oil exploration, where new discoveries and new fields often bring huge new reserves into view. That's why it is called exploration. The huge reserves in the North Sea weren't discovered until the 1960s. Huge new discoveries off the coast of Brazil were reported in 2007. Combined with new (and very environmentally safe) extraction technologies, the canard that reserves can't possibly be enough to help is exposed as just another thin facade over the DDDs' extremist agenda.

The worst argument put forward by the DDDs though is the one that says oil companies aren't using all of their existing leases to begin with.

First, a lease isn't an entitlement to drill. It is the first step. Every single environmental rule must be complied with after the lease is awarded, from land use permissions to permits to work near endangered species. (This is why the polar bear listing was so crucial to opponents of exploration --they got another club to beat would be producers of energy with.)

Second, the award of a lease doesn't guarantee an oil field is beneath the land leased or that the cost of extraction makes sense. Lots of leases are prospected and most are found wanting. But we know there are huge deposits of oil on the outer continental shelf. Scientists have confirmed it.

Obama and the Triple Ds are singing from the old statist hymn book, and they increase the volume every time another American looks up and uses common sense to conclude that he and they are standing by while the standard of living of most Americans slip on the altar of extreme environmentalist ideology.

We can drill our way out of this problem. The problem is the Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid won't let us.

The choice in November is clear. A vote for any Democrat from Obama on down the ticket is a vote for $10 a gallon gas. Obama and his allies don't care now and they won't care next year even if Obama wins. The change you will get if the Democrats get the presidency plus the Congress will be prices at the pump skyrocketing.

Maybe
we could tax all of the states that refuse to allow drilling off their coast. Make all gas $10 per gallon with the extra money going to reduce the cost of gas to the people in the states that allow drilling. We could also tax all of the Democrats that are opposed to drilling by the same amount.

BANNANA
The mantra of the Dems: Build Absolutely Nothing Not Anywhere Not Anytime. These people want us(but of course exempt themselves) to regress our lifestyles ro the 19th century. For a perfect example, visit a community of Amish. They live without cars, also without electricity, and often without indoor plumbing. If that's how Yobsma & friends want me to live, they can get bent.

Three talking points
In Hugh's article he states:

"The DDDs have three talking points: Exploration won't bring down the cost of gas very much. There isn't that much oil to find. And oil companies aren't using their existing leases anyway."

Funny thing - before I read this article I had watch H&C on Fox this evening and Alan Colmes hit all three of those talking points.

Hugh - You're clairvoyant

Hewitt, I REFUSE to believe you are
as stupid as the way you present your case.

Almost anybody related to drilling will tell you it will take at least 5 to 10 years before we see ONE DROP OF OIL from said drilling. Great. Meanwhile, crude is fluctuating at about $135 a barrel currently. In 5 to 10 years, it will be what? Drilling offshore will lower gasoline prices, when all is said and done, by a FEW CENTS a gallon. And I (as a Californian) am supposed to SUPPORT a continuation of fossil fuel energy by supporting this drilling?

Get lost, Hugh.

Listen to the governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger. STOP THINKING IN TERMS OF DIRTY OIL! Think in terms of CLEAN energy. Drilling is NOT a panacea. In fact, it will solve absolutely nothing. It is being grabbed right now as an "issue" by desperate partisan republicans who NEED a winning issue to run on since 8 years of GWB has left the country much, much worse off than when Clinton left.

It is nice to see the real media (as opposed to conservative talk-radio) cutting through the BS of the "Drill Now!" hype & propoganda. It is even nice to hear those growing conservative voices that think this is a lame, "convenient", trumped-up idea that is more politically motivated than anything else.

Keep thinking in terms of crude and dirty solutions, Hugh. With people like you we americans will never work our way out of this dire predicament.

Gas Tax
The Democrats talk about conserving, take a bus, train or what ever.
Well lets see what about the people that live in rural areas, we don't have buses, trains or what ever to get around with. This tells me they are out of touch with America. We don't all live in big cities.
They don't care what gas cost us, as long as they keep the environmentalist nuts happy.
I like you think they should all pay a higher prices, everyone in the distric would have to pay double in gas prices, then maybe they would vote the nuts out of office, if this would happen.

Will
You're an idiot. Do you even know how to read or comprehend !!! Alternative energy is fine, but we still need to drill and use our natural resources.

I can believe ANYBODY would quote Arnold. He's gotten this state in worse shape than Gray, whom we all so enthusiastically dumped only to get a mirror image of him.

We're all feeling the pain. I just paid $4.76/gal for gas at Costco.

Drilling is a must
Will seems to be as dumb as the DDDs. While drilling today won't bring down the cost of gas tomorrow, it will likely put an end to the speculation spiral. That will go a long way toward bringing down the price of oil. The longer we put off drilling, the longer it will be until we see the results from it. Claiming that it won't help tomorrow is really dodging the issue.

It's going to be years until we get the alternative energy that the left want. By their logic why bother since it won't bring down the price of gas tomorrow?

Drilling is a Must
Democrats claim to be for the working man, but how does the working man they get to work without gasoline for their cars. They can't when they earn minimum wage and pay $4.50 plus for a gallon of gas. Public transportation, forget it, especially in California. Instead the rich in their beautiful beach homes worry about their view being blighted by derricks and ships hauling oil from the ocean. These same rich folks want their gardener to arrive on time, their cleaning woman to come at convenient times, and their delivery men to be prompt. Then they complain when costs increase. Yet, these same folks give generously to the "poor man'" party, the Democrats. What hypocrisy! They need to sacrifice and give the working man a chance to earn a living. Pump oil and save the poor man. The Democrats are not really for the poor. They are for themselves and political power.

I'm tired of hearing how "drilling

today won't bring oil to market for 5 years".

I've been hearing that same mantra for over TWENTY years, which means if we'd actually started the drilling when the mantra started being used by the Greenies, we'd have had that oil on the market for over FIFTEEN years now.

And please tell me exactly WHAT "alternative energy" is going to be replacing our current technology in any SHORTER time frame.

Our entire technology is fossil-fuel based, from our distribution network to our transportation to our power distribution grid. Our entire technological evolution has been based on and developed concurrently with fossil fuel as its basis. Harry Potter gonna wave a magic wand and change all that?

Meanwhile, the McCainiacs are running around having major orgasms because McCain is plugging nuke plants, that will be online in .... 2030! That's 22 years away!

And he's suddenly a convert to off-shore drilling, knowing full well that the individual states themselves will block any actual exploitation, because those are pretty much all liberal states. What a hypocrite!

If he's so "attuned" to our needs, let's see him change his stance on drilling in ANWR. Until then, what he says is just more meaningless hot air and pandering for votes.

Drill, drill, drill
Will - I'm going to pile on and also call you an idiot. There are ~100 MILLION gasoline burning cars and trucks on the road not to mention hundreds of thousands of diesel trucks and thousands of airplanes in the fleets of our airlines ALL of which burn petroleum distillates. What the HELL "alternative" do you propose we fill up our tanks with? I'm so sick of hearing about alternatives. We've tried the most popular one, ethanol, and it has been a worldwide disaster. Will any of its supporters admit their mistakes? No of course not. Politicians are incapable of accepting responsibility.

And if the estimates of a TRILLION or more barrels of oil locked up in the shale deposits then please explain to me the need for alternatives? At least the short term need. There is none. Unless you believe in man made global warming, which, I don't. So for me there is no urgency in developing alternatives.

What alternatives do you suggest that are REAL replacements for gasoline? What other fuel has the energy density of gasoline? What other fuel has the infrastructure available, developed over DECADES, to refine, transport, and be delivered for consumption?

Liberals really have their heads up their asses on this issue and it will cost them dearly in Nov. As it should. America should not be held captive to a minority of extremist eco-Marxists who would rather see our economy grind to a halt than increase the energy supply to the American people. The Democrats are intentionally causing massive and increasing pain to American households. All the GOP has to do is hammer this theme daily and the Dems will be crushed, their Socialist agenda exposed. How many socialists in the Dem party will join Waters and Hinchey and call for nationalization of private industry? If that isn't Marxism what is?

Atlas is preparing to shrug
The pinheaded DDD's who ride on the shoulders
of hard working, sensible Americans are about to be tossed.

Can't wait!

Nuclear
I'm all for nuclear power but given our coal reserves it isn't really necessary UNLESS you buy into man made global warming. If you don't then coal fired plants should be built because the approval process is shorter, for now, and they cost less. Leave it to the eco-Nazis though to make sure we begin suffering rolling brown outs in coming years.

Related topic - the Libs continue to deny us increased energy yet they insist we open our borders to 20 million, and growing, illegal aliens who will join the ranks of energy consumers. What would be the energy savings if we could get the illegals to all go home and then keep any more from coming? I still don't understand why environmentalists are on the wrong side of this issue. It seems a natural position for them to take. My guess is they fear being called "racists" more than they actually care for the environment. Cowards. It's easier to bash big business, SUV's, and McMansions than to take real action to limit the number of energy consumers.

Lather, rinse, repeat
The Dems believe the old adage "say something often enough and it becomes the truth". That applies to their new "we can't drill our way out of this" position. It is simply untrue. We CAN drill our way out and signaling our intention to the world will reduce prices immediately. Dems obviously have no clue about the futures market or economics in general. Lawyers skip Econ 101.

Jim
Hewitt seems to think that drilling WILL bring down the cost of a gallon of gasoline tomorrow. Most estimates I have seen tell us that the first drop of oil from new drilling won't even hit the market for at least 10 years, probably more.

You say that speculators will "likely" end their speculatiing that is driving up the price of oil. Even if that becomes true, then another source of energy (biofuels, solar, wind, etc) would do exactly the same thing. And if the timeframe for alternative energy sources is less than the ten years, so much the better.

Bush and the 'drillers' have a mindset that 'more of the same' is always better. More drilling, more troops in Iraq, more money to the oil companies, etc. If Thomas Edison had that mindset, we wouldn't have electric lighting today, we would just have a bigger candle.

Dreamer, you are DREAMING

There's absolutely NO "alternative energy" source that's going to hit the market or even make the tiniest dent in our current dependance on fossil fuels anywhere in the forseeable future.

See my previous post, but the bottom line is that we have a nation and technological and infrastructure system that was designed, built and developed for and based around the use and distribution of fossil fuels. It would take, at a MINIMUM, decades and TRILLIONS of dollars to change that.

I'm not being rhetorical or hyperbolic on those figures, not in the least.

You have millions of vehicles using gas and diesel. All of our processing and distribution network is based on fossil fuels. That means all our refineries, power plants (with the exception of some nuclear, hydroelectric, or geothermal outlets), thousands and thousands of gas stations, almost everything you can think of... all based on the use of fossil fuels. That's an IMMENSE undertaking to change all that, because it basically means re-designing and rebuilding our entire society essentially from the ground up.

It's insane. Not gonna happen for a LONG time.

And that's even assuming a viable "alternative" source can even be identified. Ethanol sure was a bust!

I'm pasting this from somewhere....
"As Governor of California, I will do everything in my power to fight the federal government on this issue and prevent any new offshore drilling," Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a McCain supporter, said Wednesday.

The governor touted alternative fuels, new technologies, hydrogen fueling stations, hybrid and electric cars as better solutions. "For anyone to think that this will bring gas prices down is making a big mistake." The governor told reporters Wednesday that the state would maintain its long-held stance against offshore drilling, despite the positions taken this week by both the Arizona senator and President Bush. He also suggested that scrambling for new sources of crude oil in response to the recent drastic upturn in fuel prices represented a step backward at a time when America needs to move forward in its quest for energy independence.

"California's coastline is an international treasure," Schwarzenegger said in a statement.

Oil shale

The Eastern slopes of the Rockies have reserves estimated at between 1 - 2 TRILLION barrels of recoverable crude, enough to make us energy-independant well into the next century, and even an exporter if we so desire.

Canada's development of its Athabasca oil sands deposits have proven the technology both sound and economically viable.

Shell has developed a new on-site extraction process that significantly reduces the cost of recovery.

The shale reserves make even ANWR look like small potatoes.

Further, we haven't built a new refinery for over 2 decades.

Make no mistake, your finances are being held hostage, and you're paying 80 bucks to fill up your car, because of the Birkenstocks and granny glasses crowd.

When are you gonna be ready to fight back? When gas is at 10 bucks a gallon? Twenty?

Will, I live in Leftifornia, too

and Schitzenheader is an a-hole.

I didn't vote for HIM, either, I'm happy to say. He turned out no better than Davis, and kept a solid conservative (McClintock) from becoming Governor.

A pox on him and his Kennedy wife, both.

Tax congress
How about this approach to the rising price of gasoline at the pump, for every $.10 increase, we reduce the salary of each congressperson by $1000.

The demo-commie ban on U.S. oil.
Hugh has nailed this one 100 per cent. All the Demo-commies want is to drag the USA down to third world status because they feel that with all their power, they will be exmpt and they will be able to live as they are now. Their motto, "Don't do as I do, do as I say", must in time bite them big time in the Nancy P.(a--).These people are so far removed from us, the working stiffs that they could give a flying flip what the hell we think or feel. They are the supreme race. Don't believe it, just ask em. They are exmpt as someone else pays their way, ie: you and me. Why can't the American people wake the hell up and vote these people out of office, they are stinking up the place. We need TERM LIMITS ON BOTH SENATORS AND CONGRESSMAN NOW!!!!

libtard nitwits
How do we know that renewable energy is a pipe dream for the immediate future?

SPECULATORS don't bid it up.

Renewables are nowhere near OIL. Speculators know this LIBTARDS do not.

This country won't drill for more oil, and thus guarantees a profit for speculation.

If you really want to help a speculator make more profit,,, become a libtard.

Nothing
the Dems have proposed will produce one drop of oil. If they hadn't been taking money from the greenies and voted to block drilling we would have the oil now. All they can come up with is raise taxes, and tell the oil companies to come up with an alternative. First of all the oil companies business is petroleum, these turd crumbs are telling them to go into another field of business, what arrogance. That's like telling McDonald's they have to sell pizza. Why don't all these enviro-wackos invest their money and get the right scientists together and they come up with and energy alternative?

A San Antonio talk show host ...
...just asked an interesting question.

The oil that is below the ground is a natural resourse of the people of the United States. Why don't we say to all of the oil companies: "We'll take bids from you. You can pull it out of the ground for us, but you won't be allowed to sell it on the world market. You will sell it to American refineries for $X."

Apparently, America not only creates this runaway demand in China with our spending habits, but now we give our oil to Exxon (et. al.) for a pittance and let them (and the speculators) sell it back to us at outrageous prices.

Shoots and Ladderrs Commies and RINOs
O’Vomit has let the cat out of the bag but the media hasn’t spread the word. The Democraps, in alliance with the eco-idiots, have had a policy for a very long time to drive the price of ALL energy up over time. The O’Vomisiah said, “it has gone up too fast”. The intent was the slow boil approach so that the sheep wouldn’t notice they were being boiled alive and would not be able to pinpoint the reason for the inflation and unemployment. This is part of the overall strategy to make their “favored” forms of energy cost competitive. You see, they know that solar and wind will NEVER be cost competitive without massive aid from the government and massive price increases for the existing energy.

And then there is McLame who STILL opposes ANWR and now wants to allow drilling offshore, provided the States agree. Hahahahaha. He is part of the problem and if he wasn’t running for POTUS this year he would be right there with the Lames decrying that “we can’t drill our way out of this”.

The simple solution is to remove the government from ALL things energy and let the market straighten it out. That will never happen.

One other thing
Has evyone noticed that more and more Demoncraps are showing their true colors and calling for nationalization?

Simple is as simple does
One thing is certain. If drilling doesn't start, no oil or petroleum products will ever get to the market at any price. Everyone is just going round and round in circles on this.
Just start drilling already. Enough is enough.

Oil and money

These genetically-modified bacteria eat wood chips and grass and excrete oil. The process is carbon negative (meaning that burning the resulting oil releases less carbon than the plants pulled in from the environment) and neither cars nor our distribution system has to be modified in any way. This is an exciting potential solution to the Middle East oil dependency.

BTW, does anybody actually believe that there are terrific mpg-increasing technologies available, but that the auto/energy industry bought up the patents and is sitting on them? That always sounded like urban legend to me.

UK Times: “Ten years ago I could never have imagined I’d be doing this,” says Greg Pal, 33, a former software executive, as he squints into the late afternoon Californian sun. “I mean, this is essentially agriculture, right? But the people I talk to – especially the ones coming out of business school – this is the one hot area everyone wants to get into.”

The peasants with pitchforks
should START by drilling in Algore's 27 THOUSAND square foot home that uses as much energy as 232 average homes each month. Even if they only hit water it'll flood the place out and give it a much needed enema.

That scheme has already been tried. If you want to know how well it worked, google PetroCan, the darling of Pierre Trudeau who was the Canadian Obama.

If you want to speed Atlas in his dssire to shrug, trying to force people to spend their own money to produce something you openly plan to steal is a really great way to speed him up.

Moderation
Drilling is a good idea, but why are people pushing offshore drilling with the potential for spills, when we can drill in the middle of nowhere in Alaska?

I am in favor of conserving natural beauty while using natural resources.

One of the ways that industries shoot themselves in the foot is by making areas where they operate ugly. It makes moderates hesitate to support mining and drilling.

On the eastern edge of Los Angeles County, between the San Gabriel Valley and the Inland Empire, there are industrial areas that appear to run by mining companies. These areas look like big ugly scars on the landscape, and one wonders if they can ever be reclaimed.

It seems to me that people can do what they want with their properties, but if they want the American moderates to get behind more exploration, they should make a little extra effort to make their areas look better.

This is just good public relations and good common sense, like knowing you shouldn't park a fleet of broken down cars on your front lawn.

When the oil companies save a buck by hiring drunken sea captains to command their vessels, and shrug when these alcoholics slam the ships into the rocks, making a huge oil slick, they hurt their public image.

With freedom comes responsibility.

will
That old "it'll take ten years" BS has been used for the last thirty years by the morons in Congress (MOC). That's like saying that we shouldn't do anything long term because the problem will be so big in the future that it won't do any good. Your myopic view of the world is astonishing.

And it's not just petrolium that the MOC are opposed to. The MOC are also against nuclear power, wind, hydroelectric and coal technology.

Whats their solution? Ethynol. And, as usual, the MOC don't think long-term and are too stupid to project ahead to see the unintended consequences of their arrogance and myopia.

FACT: It costs more money and energy to make a gallon of ethynol than a gallon of gasoline. That energy has to come from somewhere.

FACT: Because of the government decreed demand for ethynol and other MOC regulations, the price of motor fuel and food is rising at an alarming rate and is driving up the cost of a whole range of products as well.

FACT: If we continue to use food producing land to produce ethynol, food will continue to rise sharply.

FACT: The MOC don't give a crap about America, the American people or our way of life. They care only about retaining their power and pleasing their contributors and special interests.

I have lived in the Los Angeles area long enough to remember the days when people had small oil rigs on their private property. You could drive around town, or up the coast and spot occasional pumps, curning away. I assume that zoning laws have prevented this, but I suspect that there are oil reserves under here still.

In fact, the La Brea Tar Pits, next to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in the middle of the Wilshire District, still has tar bubbling up from deep under the ground.

Instead of promoting a subway under Wilshire Blvd, where there is a likelihood of Methane explosions (not to mention problems with earthquakes) perhaps our city government should be in the oil business.

How could oil rigs be any uglier than many of the strip malls that sit on every corner?

If -------
If the Democrats are able to implement everything they promise / threat, let's just think where we will be 10-20 years from now. While I am 66 and may not make it 20 years, I still care about this country!

So what can this country be like in 20 years assuming the Democrats impose their views? The easy ones to predict are: broke, angry overtaxed citizens, major infrastructure problems, serious non-functioning public services, revolutions a brewing if not actually happening, and a second-rate country! The hard ones to predict are: hardly anything - well the elected officials including the president and many people leaving this country to the illegal aliens!

IMHO!

The "progressive" 12-step program
Has been going on since the Seventies. It works like this;

1. Prohibit any new energy development, anywhere.

2. Watch the price of fuel go up, not just for gasoline, but diesel and jet fuel as well.

3. With one hand, demand "alternative" energy sources, but block them with the other. (In Kentucky last week, an enviro group got a court order to stop the construction of windmills- as "threats to birds".)

4. Hew to a belief that people are, inevitably, a threat to "Holy Mother Gaia". ("Economic growth is a disease"- Maurice Strong, former head of the UN Environmental working group.)

5. Once things begin to fall apart, nationalize everything.

6. Introduce Draconian laws to limit who can do, or have, what. (Carefully exempting themselves.)

7. When the pain hits, blame somebody else.

8. When the pain hits THEM, start looking for a scapegoat.

9. When they realize that their prior scapegoats are no longer usable (they've wiped them out), change tactics.

10. Say that it's "all the fault of other countries that won't do their share".

11. Deliver ultimatums to those countries- Support Our New Order Or Else.

12. When that fails, go to war.

If this sounds familiar, it should. It's exactly what France did under the Directory, and Napoleon.

In case you've forgotten, France was nearly destroyed as a result.

Please note that only Steps 1 to 7 are what they want to happen. 8 to 12 are the inevitable results of what they want to do.

Not that they've thought that far ahead. They never do.

You got that right Brian!

Although I prefer to call him SchwartzenTraitor.

I think that Arnold is a "girlie-man" who is led around like a pull toy by that Kennedy clan wife of his.

The Democrats lie
About how much oil is under this country and the leases that we currently have open for drilling.

THEY SIMPLY DON'T WANT US TO EXPLORE OR DRILL FOR NEW OIL SOURCES BECAUSE THAT WOULD KILL THEIR EFFORTS TO FORCE US TO DEPEND ON THEM FOR OUR TRANSPORTATION NEEDS.

WHEN will the liberal idiots in this country and on this board realize that their so-called leaders are screwing them over too and couldn't care less how badly they make any of us suffer.

They have their transportation ad they steal the costs of it from your pockets. So why should they care if YOU get hurt?

Mountain Rose
"How could oil rigs be any uglier than many of the strip malls that sit on every corner?"

I worked in many of the L.A. Basin fields back in the 1970s and 80s. Ironically, they were often the only "green" acreage in a sea of concrete and asphalt. The wells were unobtrusive, the terrain was relatively unspoiled, and the coyotes, deer, raccoons, hawks and other critters (unfortunately, rattlesnakes included) were very happy.

It used to break my heart when one of the old, no longer economical fields was sold to a developer, who would promptly put up a shopping mall or row after row of cookie cutter houses.

On another point, the long lead time between drilling and the gas pump, these idiots have been making this same argument for over 30 years now...if they had just shut up way back then, all this oil would be on stream today.

It is completely clear...
...the dhimwits are attempting to create a socialist utopia. They will refuse to allow the common sense exploration and drilling while villifiying "Big Oil" until the people are screaming, "Oh, Please! Big Government, take the oil from the EVIL BIG OIL companies and give it to us!" An lo, from up on high our elitist saviours will snatch the oil from the hands of the evil rich oil companies and let the spigot flow to the people, and it will be good, for they will claim "We did it for the working class and for the poor and of course, for the children." And thus will begin the rationing and long waiting lines and yet more government corruption and the fleecing of the american (no cap on purpose) Sheeple (cap on purpose).

This is one area where Bush is right.
We should have been drilling domestically for years. Areas now off-limits should have been opened years ago..

We have not built a conventional refinery in 30 years.

That is criminal.

Nor have we built nuclear reactors.

Radical environmentalists have controlled any rational discussion on this issue.

Now it has been brought home to Americans that it is a national security issue.

Bush is right. Those who want to open ANWR and increase drilling off our coasts, are right.

I think this gas price problem will finally each critical mass, and Americans will DEMAND we drill domestically.

Liberal democrats are making a political blunder of immense proportions by opposing drilling.

It CAN turn the election, win it for McCain.

I know McCain is not that good on the issue, but compared to the liberals, he is lightyears ahead.

The reason, AND ONLY reason
we are suffering fuel prices is greed:

we want it. they want us to want it.

park your cars, folks! Buy minis, folks!

walk, ride transit, bike, change your greedy lifestlyles, and watch what happens.

Ya know, once a pesty ex-wife just could not stop her phone calling (soon after a break up). This constant annoyance was altering the lifestyle of my new relationship, until I suggested; ignore the calls! pretend they are not there. Go on with your business without their interuption. YOU are fueling this need.

Surprisingly, he took my advice. The calls stopped almost immediately.

Life takes on curves. Be flexible to them.

Populist rubbish.
"The choice in November is clear. A vote for any Democrat from Obama on down the ticket is a vote for $10 a gallon gas..."

Really? You're going to choose a president solely on the grounds of the price of crude oil and how much it costs to run your brum-brum toy.

You (so called) Rightists (sic) would get on really well with Chevez from Venezuela, he also spouts this leftist populist rubbish.

You can drill all you want. Just get it through your thick skulls that the PRICE OF OIL AI'NT COMIN' DOWN, EVER.

So if you leave it in the ground now, in 20/30 years time you will be sitting on a REALLY valuable (non-renewable) resource.

The party of the uber-elitists
I do not understand why anyone cant understand why the unholy trinity of Pelosi, Reid, and Hussein Obama would be against any kind of drilling for oil at all. You cant portray the American public as victims of the evil oil companies if the cost of gasoline doesnt reflect it. Instead you prevent the US from finding any new source of oil reserves whilst attempting to push through a meaningless windfall tax bill. Did they really think in their pathetic little minds that the oil companies wouldnt pass the tax on to the consumers like every other business does?
I'm sure Barack Hussein Obama can afford the $200-$300 a week necessary to fuel his gas guzzling Cadillac SUV. Heck he and his uber-elitist friends probably spend more than that on one lunch. But for most Americans, the bitter ones who cling to their Bibles and guns, the high cost of gas leads them with having to make the choice of driving or eating.
So much for being the party of the people!!!!

Oil
The Democrats have just handed the GOP a major present that could win the election for them. But will the GOP use it? The three reasons the Democrats give are so full of half truths and out right lies. The GOP should blanket the media with ads to this Democratic sham and stop playing nice. I still do not get the feeling our Congressman and Senators understand how serious this situation is. Like it or not this country runs on oil and not to drill in our own back yard is just plan stupid. Did I just call the Congress stupid? Pelois and Reid are traitors to this country, just look at their ratings. It is 12 points below President Bush. Yes, it is time for change. The American public need to wake up and stop Washington from doing business as usual. (no,I do not mean elect Obama) I mean the corruption and graft, influence peddling have gotten so deep rooted that it would almost take a Revolution to change it. We as citizens need to let our representatives know we are fed up with their behavior, Pepublican and Democrat alike. George Ely

ENERGY IS FREEDOM
I so happy that the GOP is starting to get its act together and that McCain is opening his eyes to the battle before him.

The only way to win this election will be to get bloodied and never stop fighting for what is right.

McCain and the GOP need to equate energy independence to Freedom and not money. Saving money is great and the by product of a good energy policy, but that argument can be diminished by the "environment" scare tactic..."don't you want to leave a beautiful beach for your children?...ummm?"

If they frame the argument correctly and squarely on freedom...they (and America) will win the debate.

and...
we can't elect Obama as a way out of this either. Maybe we shud open our windows wider in the summer. B-HO wants us on mass transportation but when I rode the buses and els of the CTA system in Chicago there were too many thugs and robbers for me. Why hasn't B-HO fixed his own backyard so it could be an example for the rest of us who "drive cars". Does B-HO actually have a drivers license?

Bulldog
You are absolutely right!

Those little oil rigs used to sit on vacant lots, leaving a lot more open space around town.

It didn't take long to move the oil down to the refinery in the South Bay. I don't know whether they used a pipe line, or small tankers.

The refinery didn't smell great when you drove past on the 405, but it was covered with little white lights, and I used to call it "Fairy Land" when I was a little girl.

Endangered Species Act
Get rid of this act because it has upsurped anything that free enterprise has attempted to do. It is federal regulation to the enth degree. How do these people know if something is endangered when new species are cropping up they these brainiacs never heard of. How do you count every living amount of every species everywhere in the world when they hide in holes in the ground, etc. I can't even see the deer eat all my flowers and bushes in my own front yard every night, but they do. Pretty smart these creatures to avoid us.

GET RID OF ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT NOW!!

TERM LIMITS - BEING A CONGRESSMAN WAS NEVER MEANT AS A "CAREER".

Oil
We drilled in Alaska and sold the oil to a foreign couontry. Their's no cure for stupid and greed is a really really bad mental illness.

Mountain Rose and Bulldog
What happened to all those green spaces. The oil ran out, that's what happened.
And it was sold for around $5/barrel.
What would it be worth today if it would have been sat on? Answer: A whole lot more.

Urban, well-heeled elitists
would have all of us relying on mass-transit.

But thankfully this nation is more than a few densely populated urban centers.

There is the great heartland out there.

Iowa, Arizona, Kentucky, Georgia, and dozens more states.

People living in these states don't want elitist urban planners and government bureaucrats dictating how they get from point to point.

Perhaps we could devise a huge mass transit infrastructure system, at the cost of trillions of dollars, to deal with the corridor from Washington, D.C. to Boston.

Those people are already culturally acclimatized to the loss of privacy and individual choice associated with mass transport.

But compelling Americans to give up their private automobiles, not to mention the prohibitive costs of laying railroad tracks accessible to the hundreds of millions of Americans not living in that Northeastern corridor, would probably result in open revolt and rebellion from Americans living in the heartland.

As food prices continue to skyrocket

...I wouldn't be at all surprisd if next it's "Let them eat cake"!

The Dems are the new "Aristos." I guess that makes the rest of us the new "sans culottes"!!!

I'm sick and tired
of hearing people say "we can't do" this or "we can't do" that.
I'm an AmeriCAN not an AmeriCAN'T

DRILL HERE, DRILL NOW and develop alternate fuel and energy sources in the meantime.

"Can't never could do nothing"
A highschool teacher from years ago told me.

A contradiction
Hugh says the reason the cost of oil is high is because of global demand and growth. Then he says the cost of oil is high because we can't drill. It is a combination of many things, one primary reason is the decline of the dollar because of the spend spend spend RINO and Dems. There are a few Republicans left in congress but they are very outnumbered.
I would also like to see his source for the idea that as soon as we start drilling for oil it will drop in price.
The Bakken Fields in North Dakota hold potentially 400BILLION barrels, yet the price hasn't fallen at all and they are drilling like crazy here.
The only thing, in my humble opinion, that might slow the rise of the price of oil is a full court press to develop alternative fuels to a larger scale.
Iceland is doing it......why can't we?????
Are we so "in the box" with our thinking that any out of the box is met with naysayers. What in the world ever happened to the American "We will get it done" attitude????
Peak oil is here, just a few years before projections had indicated. We are sorely prepared.....that is the hard pill to swallow.

my 2 cents
I seem to say this every few years and I think it's about time to say it again: Read 'Atlas Shrugged' by Ayn Rand.

Silence The Eco-Terrorists
We are in this quagmire mainly due to the liberal eco-idiots that would rather spare the life of a flee than help their fellow man.

I don't happen to care that the results might take 10 years to take affect (some say 2 years) but I do plan to still pump gas for the next 30 years of my life, and I'll take what I can get.

What is wrong by being energy indepedant, regardless if it may take a decade to do so? You need to look ahead. If we build more nuclear plants, plus drill on our own territory, imagine how much gas and energy would cost you then?

If it weren't for the eco-idiot scare mongers, we could've done this years ago and be on the road to $2.00 gas prices.

Also, if the ME sees we're independant of them, their prices will lower. With no demand from us, there's an overage of supply.

Look forward, drill, build nuclear plants, create more US jobs, make us independant from the ME, and lower our costs.

Simple.

Fossil fuel, peak oil, & global warming
The fossil fuel and peak oil theories are just that: theories. They have NEVER been proven. Both are examples of "scientific consensus," which means that enough scientists BELIEVE something to be true, so it is accepted as truth. Does this ring a bell? Yup, the global warming theory is another "scientific consensus." Some years ago, the scientific consensus was that the Earth was flat, and at the center of the Universe.

There is another theory that has been around for years: the abiotic oil theory. It states that oil does NOT come from decayed dinosaurs and rain forests, but rather is produced naturally and continuously by the earth very deep within the mantle and gradually seeps up. There is a lot of convincing evidence for this, such as the fact that so much oil is being discovered at such great depths today. This is supposed to be impossible according to the fossil fuel theory, since the dinos and rain forests didn't sink that deep. The Russians have been operating under the abiotic theory and that is what led them to drill deep. Using the same theory, the Vietnamese have found deep oil in bedrock, which, again, argues against the fossil fuel theory. The recent, huge finds deep in the ocean off Brazil are another example that refutes the fossil fuel theory.

Think about it: isn't the fossil fuel theory just tailor made for liberals, combined with the gloomy predictions of "peak oil," which will necessitate conservation, sacrifice, higher oil prices and a switch to alternative energy sources? Combine that with global warming theory, and you have the ultimate liberal Gorbasm. Anybody who talks about "weaning ourselves from our addiction to oil" has bought this claptrap hook, line, and sinker. What if the abiotic theory is true and we will NEVER run out of oil?

One might benefit from reading 'The Clowns of God' by Morris West.

I've read Atlas Shrugged over 5 times in my life.

If Obama is our POTUS, it begins.

Also the Fountainhead is a must read and conveys the same sheep mentality of socialism and medocrity.

Yes we can drill our way out
The new mantra of the Left is: "we can't drill our way out of this," because it will take years before we would actually see oil production from new wells. However, what they won't tell you is that the main reason it takes years to get the oil out of the ground is the mountain of paperwork, permits, environmental impact studies, etc. that have to be completed before the oil companies can drill (or build a refinery, or do anything). As an example, in order to drill in one particular spot, Shell Oil had to obtain permits from 46 different government agencies. Many of these agencies required several permits. Congressman Chris Cannon of Utah is trying to pass a bill that would give the President the ability to expedite this process in a matter of DAYS, not years. Check out his site at http://www.dollargas.us or http://www.chriscannon.com

Is anyone here aware
that drilling for oil off the ocast of Florida has been prevented by a force almost entirely made up of Republicans? The most ardent opponent of offshore drilling being George Bush'es brother.

Why do conservatives only focus on liberals, and never on the actual problem in front of them?
It's why you are all losing.

If I ruled the world...
...I would call for a Congressional vote to allow drilling in ANWR and off the Outer Continental Shelf.

The first five Congresspersons voting nay would be collared, packed into the cargo bay of the space shuttle, and promptly blasted into outer space.

Dump the offenders in a low Earth orbit designed to deteriorate on the evening of July 4th so that their incineration upon re-entry might finally serve some useful purpose for the country by providing a high altitude fireworks show.

Upon the return of Congress on July 5th, I would call for another vote, with an announcement to Congress along the lines of "of course, all members are free to vote as they see fit, however, all those voting nay will be awarded free rides on the next space shuttle".

THANK YOU!! Mr. Obama and the libs "demand" that oil companies come up with alternate sources of oil. Which other companies do we demand that you come up with an alternative to your product? If there were such a viable alternative, competing industries would arise.
And they will someday.
IMO, nuclear energy is one thing we ought to be doing. If congress would lift bans, industry (and lots of jobs) would ensue for that as well.

Ms Waters threatened to "nationalize" oil companies ala Hugo Chavez. If she were in charge of them, I wonder what she'd have them do?

Your (8:53am) post- excellent. Says it all.

I would add that the popular press aids and abets the eco-terrorists. The awful consequences of their policies aren't exactly front page news.
How much did we hear about their role in holding up the modernization of drainage systems in new Orleans before katrina?

We hear about species that will be "endangered" by drilling, but never about the fact that hasn't happened, and in fact species are thriving in a pristine environment alongside oil rigs everywhere.

They tout Brazil's energy independence, and they report that it's razed the amazon basin, but they don't blare the fact that that razing only accounts for 15% of brazil's fuel.

The other 85%? They drilled for oil offshore.

Obama and The Don't Drill Democrats
Hugh,
I completely agree with you and vehemently disagree with writer #63 from California. Reading his article you can tell he is firmly Democratic and doesn't really understand how the "world turns". We all know that just because you get a lease to drill for oil you aren't going to get oil the next day. But you would definitely put a crimp and start the futures traders to thinking that maybe the sky is not the limit. WE need to help ourselves because the UN, the rest of the world and our own elected officials (Democrats and Republicans alike) will not. The hell with them lets do what is right for America and Americans!!!!!!!!!!
Joe D.

We can't drill ..........
.......... our way out of this. We also can't conserve our way out of this. It's going to take a combination of both. If I'm going to have an income to tax, I'm going to have to be able to get to work. At what price of fuel is it going to be more economical to quit work and stay home? Public transportation? What public transportation? I'd have to drive somewhere, get a different job in order to USE public transportation. Now, there IS a bus that I can take to the airport, can't afford to go anywhere, but I would be using public trans. Nidiots!! Congresswhores, I'm tired of them being in bed with the eco-nazis.

A Townhall Challenge...
Listen folks, let's cut to the chase here.

I hereby issue a formal Townhall Challenge to Hal Dumbahue, killer, and any other fools and knaves skulking about in the weeds out there.

Short of the total destruction of human life on this planet by the arrival of a planetary sized asteroid, or other such life-ending calamity, the oil off the Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf coasts of the United States will be drilled for and produced.

The majority of the reserves lie in international waters. Someone is going to drill for it, pump it, and burn it. This is an undeniable reality. The only question is when the oil in these areas will be produced and who will get it. Period, end of discussion.

The Official Townhall Challenge, then, is as follows:

I challenge anyone to assert that they actually believe that the oil in question will not be developed and will be allowed to remain where it now lies.

I eagerly await any response to this very simple Challenge.

: Sen. Obama & the North American Union
Barack Obama YOU HAVE SAID NOTHING about the N A U (SPP.GOV). You MUST know this “business deal” was done by Pres. Bush with his friend, confidant & past Pres. of Mexico, V. Fox. This quietly done "deal" was ORALLY solidified at the Bush ranch. It was never debated by the legislature or told to American citizens. We now see plans for a Super Highway, where thousands of acres of tax payer property will be confiscated through (the Kelo vs New London Court rule) eminent domain process. PRIVATE PROPERTY IS CENTRAL TO THE FREEDOM AMERICANS ENJOY. The N A U- “NAFTA Super Highway” deal negates this basic, American right to own, retain, safeguard and preserve property owned by families, in many cases, for generations. The NAU, surreptitiously done by President Bush in 2005, with NO debate or vetting by the legislature, completely disenfranchised Americans of any knowledge of or say in the matter. It is the equal of a virtual coup in surrendering U.S. sovereignty to a trilateral entity that, in the form of a N A U, could equal the European Union that dictates to the citizens of 27 European states. Senator, you need to tell American your position on preserving U.S. Sovereignty. The N.A.U., if actively denounced in your campaign, could win you the presidency. Your opponents have never talked of this vital issue - - meanwhile the Bush admin. is proceeding as thought this private scheme is a “done deal”. America is watching, listening & waiting to see how you stand on this critical matter. P.S. House Concurrent Resolution 40 states Congressional DISAPPROVAL of the NAFTA Highway & N A U. You are NOT among the 48 COSPONSORS of the bill. Why? Ron Paul introduced H.R. 5191, prohibiting use of federal funds for N A U highway projects. Back this bill & show you support the sovereignty, independence & freedom of America.

think 4 yourself
I agree there's plenty of blame to go around. I also agree that we should look at the problem in front of us. So, let's look at it. Who's holding up drilling off the coast of Florida and everywhere else TODAY? Not Bush, not McCain, or the Florida governor, who have all come out in favor of drilling in the last few days. Have YOU been focusing on the problem in front of us, following the news, listening to what Obama said about high gas prices (the only problem is that they went up too fast)?

And by the way, who says we're losing? Obama has only a slight edge over McCain, and it's still very early. In fact, considering Bush's low approval ratings, Obama's lead should be much bigger. But wait until the American people become aware of the difference between McCain ("drill now") and Obama ("let them eat cake"). I think you might want to wait a while before declaring victory.

Refineries
I live about 10 miles from the large Bayway refinery in New Jersey. No one in my town suffers any adverse effects from it. 25 years ago, it used to smell; it doesn't anymore (they capture the byproducts they used to vent). We have unused industrial land which would make a great refinery site (with pipeline and coastal access) and a great site for offshore oil support bases. But our Senators and Governor (all limo liberals) don't want this industry which could reduce our crushing tax burden as well as cut gas prices. McCain is right-drill and build nukes.

the cat is out of the bag
The democrats have already told us what is going to happen if Obama gets in office. They are going to nationalize the oil companies. The plan is to stifle our economy blame it on Bush and republicans. Then all the mindless people chanting yes we can will soon find out no they Can't because the commies are in control.Read history folks. It is almost incrediable what is happening before our eyes.STAND UP CLEAR THINKING AMERICANS MAKE YOUR VOICES TO BE HEARD.

Obama-Messiah on doing nothing
Obama thinks that 'doing nothing' about gas prices except raising taxes on oil is the answer to high gas prices.

Higher taxes seems to be the only answer that Democrats and their 'Obama-Messiah' have for any problem.

Economy Down = raise taxes on those who work and businesses to ensure prosperity.

Gas High = raise taxes on the oil industry to ensure that prices will go down.

Groceries High = increase taxes on the transporting of groceries forcing groceries to be cheaper.

Heating your Home High = block those drilling for new energy sources and raise taxes on those who do to ensure lower heating heating costs.

Obama-Messiah believes that blocking and taxing will deliver America from the grip of high costs.

What a group!

strategy
This is the key issue of the campaign.
McCain should hammer away at the reid-pelosi-obama connection and their policies to drive up energy prices. He should always link obama with reid and pelosi, much like democrats constantly link McCain with President Bush. obama and the other socialists are vulnerable on this issue.

Obama-Messiah on Gullible Warming
Gullible Warming is something that will hurt America in the future according to Obama-Messiah.

Drilling for oil will not help America in the future according to Obama-Messiah.

We Could See Plenty of Oil Within 24 Mos
We have 800 Billion barrels of oil in shale that could be converted and put on the market within 2 years at $40 per bbl.

That is 3 times the amount of oil Saudia Arabia has. No discovery or drilling necessary.

In addition we have 400 years supply of coal, much of which could be converted and placed in the market within 2 years also at $40 per bbl.

During WWII converted coal for all their gasoline needs. They did it using the Fischer Tropsch process and was on line in 6 months.

The Dems say we can't drill our way out. We don't have to we have shale oil and coal to convert to gasoline.

will, it's going to take...
...ten years to see oil? Are you using a shovel and coffee can to collect it or what?

I'm not real sure how you rough necks out in Cal-I-For-Ni-A do it, but in the rest of the oil patch if it took ten years for a field to come in you would be out of business.

Now it may be that your experience with oil is taking your car to Jiffy-Lube twice a year, and I'm not faulting you on that, most folks don't deal directly with the oil patch. But why not look at the situation realisticly, you honestly think it takes ten years from the time the rig goes up till crude is in the system?

Nationalize
These idiots screw up anything they touch (social security) and most apparently know nothing about business or economics, they don't need to get their grubby, socialist mitts on anything. They all need to go for a drive with Ted "the life-guard".

Mountain Rose
do you know about a 1000 oil rigs were damaged when Katrina and Rita rolled through and not one leaked. I'm not saying its impossible, what I am saying is the technology has gotten extremely good. Car accidents happen everyday, still we drive, some jobs carry inherent dangers, we still do them.

Goof Washington
I will confront your challenge, which amounts to a fools question. In all likelihood, the oil will be developed. The only thing that could stop that would be the development of a new energy source which might make such production unnecessary, and that will not happen soon enough.

Behind your question, though, is a set of assumptions and implications.

First, is the myth that the oil in question will have a significant impact on worldwide supplies. It will not. Two years supply? Five years? That is a drop in the bucket if not attached to an overarching plan.

Second is the myth that if we produce oil in the American OCS or ANWR it will be "our" oil. It will belong to oil companies who will have absolutely no commitment to providing that oil to the US. It will go to the highest bidder.

Third is the myth that Democrats or liberals are alone in opposing drilling in or near America. The biggest opponent of drilling in the Gulf of Mexico was Jeb Bush. The executive orders that make some lands off limits could be rescinded by George Bush today, if he so chose. The Bush clan is just as responsible for limitations on propduction as anybone else. And remember, we still don't know who helped Dick Cheney formulate the energy policy that resulted in this debacle.

The fourth assumption is that the $140 a barrel oil we see discussed on TV will be pumped next week. That oil will not be produced for a long time. That figure is a speculative price generated by artificially low margins on futures contract. The price is significantly exacerbated by the weak dollar and the instability in the Middle East.

But happily, the myth that there is enough oil for everyone forever is finally evaporating. Whatever oil is left MUST be seen as a shrinking resource that we have to use as we transition to a new energy source. In the future though, I hope that the President will at least tell us who is in the room when American energy plicy is formulated.

The ultimate goal....
President Bush called for Congress to lift the moratorium on off-shore drilling, and some liberals in Congress did not take the announcement well.

In fact, Representative Maurice Hinchey -- while the cameras were rolling -- actually CALLED FOR THE NATIONALIZATION OF OIL REFINERIES!

FOX News caught the statement on camera and actually reported it on the Neil Cavuto show.

Strangely, Hinchey's statement is not an isolated incident. This is NOT the first time a liberal slipped in front of the cameras.

Last month during a congressional dog-and-pony show, Representative Maxine Waters actually called for a GOVERNMENT TAKE OVER OF THE OIL INDUSTRY!

The Waters video made the rounds on YouTube.com (and the Hinchey video is already on YouTube.com as well). If you've seen it, Waters actually flubs and catches herself as she is about to scream the word "SOCIALISM!"

Gasoline costs over $4.00 per gallon at the pump and it would seem that liberals in Congress are doing everything in their power to block measures that will lower the price of gasoline for all of us and are desperately trying to find ways to use this crisis as a pathetic excuse to raise our taxes!

Go to The Center For Individual Freedom, cfif.org for more information.

vic...

...back before the mid-terms Nancy Pelosi did say that the Dems had a solution for the energy situation. Well, where's the plan?

If you tell people you have a way out of a situation and after you get in control you fail to even present a solution then, yeah I think it's fair for people to pile some blame on you.

And you forgot that the proper spelling is either Bu$h, or Bushhhhh. Thought they taught ya'll better over at KOS.

Gordon
Good point... that is, if the government doesn't delay it for years with endless permit requirements, environmental impact studies, etc. As I mentioned in a post above, Congressman Chris Cannon of Utah is trying to pass a bill that would give the President the ability to expedite this process down to a matter of DAYS, not years. Like you, Cannon says we could get at this shale oil pretty quickly if not for the environmental red tape.

http://www.dollargas.us or http://www.chriscannon.com

Now, I hate doing this...
...but I have to agree with the Obama on the point that we cannot drill our way OUT of the problem. We can however drill our way into some relief from the problem, and by omiting or ignoring that puts him in the wrong. Again.

It is true that the crude from these new fields goes into the market place, but that's just the way the system is set up. If we say we're just going to keep it here then that puts us in the position of not participating in the world market meaning we can no longer purchase from the world market.

Where the relief comes in is on the supply & demand side, where world market supply goes up more than, hopefully, demand bringing prices down. So while we don't keep the "free" oil, we do impact the overall price, hopefully, by increasing supply on the market.

And anyone who tells you the "Big Awl" companies are supressing new energy options are crazy. These companies all want to be the first in line to offer a new, viable, alternative fuel because they know the world is going to beat a path to their door to get it. There isn't a company anywhere that wants to be left out of a market the whole world is guaranteed to buy, and they all want to be the first to have it.

Instant results.

Hewitt is right on... when he writes that IF congress passed good drilling legislation, the oil futures speculators would go into a sell-mode and the price at the pump would go down substantially... and in short order.

Not in 5-10 years.

Wake up America... Democrats are costing you $$$, and jobs, and security, and your future.

Operation Drill Bit
This is from another radio show host who says he doesn't mind taking credit, or not.

That’s why we’re rolling out, “Operation Drill Bit”…
• Here’s what we need to do…
• Go to Lowe’s or Home Depot or whatever mom & pop hardware store you like, and buy a drill bit to send to your congressman or woman…
• In fact, buy at least 3…
• One for your Representative in the House
• And one for each of your two United States Senators.
• Tell them you are sick and tired of gas prices, and of watching this great country borrow money from the Chinese to buy oil from the Saudi’s
• Click around on their web pages until you find their Washington, D.C. office… Don’t send anything to a local or district office.
• Include the message: IT'S TIME TO DRILL OUR OWN OIL NOW!
• Let’s flood Washington with drill bits to let them know it’s time to drill ANWR, the Gulf of Mexico and other domestic resources.
• We’re mad as hell, and we’re not going to take it anymore!!!

Some Thoughts based on Experience
TO Will and all the other naysayers-we can drill and develop our way out of this current crisis in a timely fashion. I worked on development of two oil fields which were discovered, drilled, developed and produced to market 650,000 bbd of oil in less than 4 years. One field was in a region more inhospitable than ANWR; no roads, no airstrips, and an 1100 km pipeline had to be built. All it takes is will-no pun intended!
Shale oil alone could provide up to 5 million barrels per day to our supply. It has been studied, worked on, and deferred since at least 1971. Shell Oil is ready to go into production on their shale oil property, but Congress and the enviros have been successful for years at delaying any commercialization.
The oil field mentioned in North Dakota does not hold 400 billion barrels of oil. Just think about it. A field that size could produce 50 million barrels per day for many years at its peak, and its oil volume would be nearly twice the volume known to remain in Saudi Arabia. It is a good find, but probably more in the 400 million barrel range.
The price of all oil is generally set by the last barrel on the market. We do not have to become totally independent in oil production to see the prices fall. Add a couple million barrels per day to our supply, and the price will drop. The idiotic argument by the left is that we should not try to add any oil to our supply since we will never be self sufficient. Carry that argument to bauxite, iron ore, platinum, and a multitude of other raw materials we have to import because we cannot produce enough here and therefore we import our shortfall, and the argument collapses.

So, we can't drill in ANWR because it might hurt the polar bears. OK lets eliminate that problem. Lets go hunting. KIll all the polar bears and no more problem right??? Just maybe a couple of thousand of 'em. Then we can say it was all the dummycrats fault the polar bears were killed

As I said (sarcastically) once on another thread, I'd LOVE to see them nationalize the U.S. Oil Industry...I could then apply for a government petroleum engineering job with the DOE or whoever ends up operating our domestic fields, and settle into a life of job security, overblown pensions, no pressure, no accountability...wow...what a far cry from normal life in the oil business

OF all the issues which divide the left and the right, none is more amenable to a rational discussion and rational, data based resolution. But neither side of the debate appears to have any interest in a rational, data based solution.

While the specific answer(s) to the energy "crisis" can't be determined a yet, the broad outline of the solution can be defined. We need to produce, conserve and invent. All these are necessary.

Fortunately, it appears the magnitude of the gas price issue has actually forced consideration of a serious, long term energy policy. This, despite the fact that the current price is due to several factors beyong supply and demand. Specifically, artificially low margins in commodities trading on the International Commodities Exchange encourage speculation while the decline in the value of the dollar can be identified as a significant contributor of the price "increase".

Fixinf those issues will have more of an impact on the price of gas than any new production.

"Here's the simple fact on why oil prices are going up: Bush's WARS are bankrupting this country. Bush's WARS are being financed through debt and the Federal Reserve inflating the currency."

Yeah, all that record economic growth in India and China has nothing to do with it. Okay.

"Of course, the gutless wonders in the Corporate Media can't talk about that."

"Corporate Media". I love it. The same "Corporate Media" who routinely slander anyone who makes more than $45,000 a year. The same "Corporate Media" who consider all business executives guilty until proven innocent whenever there's a scandal or an economic crisis. Right Vito.

Fishing for fools...
Just stopped back by to check my fishing pole and, hey, look what I caught!

It's a Jack! Pretty nice-looking liberal fish!

I caught this dandy specimen with the challenge I posted earlier for anyone to deny that the oil in international waters off the American coast will be drilled by someone at sometime.

Hey, this is really good bait!

My poor, poor little Jack. Let me try to help you off that hook, and in your struggle to understand. You enumerate four ojections:

1) It's not enought oil to make any difference.

Correct answer is: More is more. More is not less. More is more.

2) If we pump the oil, it doesn't mean we get to keep it, it goes into the market.

Correct answer is: Whoever pumps the oil gets to keep either the BTUs or the bucks.

3) Bush and Republicans are to blame.

Correct answer: It does not matter a baby Chinese rats a** who is to blame for not having drilled previously. Who supports drilling for the oil now and who does not?

4) Current prices are a reflection of futures trading; supply and demand are not as big an issue as instability in the Middle East.

Correct answer: The announcement today that the U.S. intends to immediately begin to develop these fields via a crash national program will collapse the speculation which is occurring in the oil futures markets.

I think I will throw this Jack fish back. You know, practice ecologically friendly catch and release. Who knows, maybe this little Jack fish will grow up to keeper size one day. I'm afraid it's more likely the sharks will get the poor little naive guy.

Oh well, time to re-bait my line...

Your Most Humble, etc.

Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay LESS!
HH analysis is dead on. Thanks Hugh! It's the enviro-nazi's that are controlling the special interest groups who inturn control the democratic party. If we ever manage to wake up in this country, were bound to see that the future of the American way of life is at stake in this next election. Either we vote for capitalism and a free market (Republican), or we vote for socialism and a regulated market (Democrat). I know what I feel is the best for this nation, where do you stand?

The liberals block ALL energy
The dirty little secret is that there is no 100% pollution-free, CO2-free, NIMBY-free energy source.

For years, environmentalists and their liberal patrons have been playing "bait and switch" with the public:

1. Tell the public to stop using fossil fuels and rely on nuclear power (that was their stance in the 1970s).

2. Tell the public to stop using nuclear power and rely on wind power (that was their stance in the 1980s).

3. Tell the public to stop using wind power because birds might collide with the blades and it spoils the natural beauty of the environment (that's been the stance of Ted Kennedy and the Audubon Society about the Cape Wind project and other wind projects in the 1990s).

Add it all up, and you get the distinct impression the environmentalists just oppose all energy production everywhere. You just name it, and you will find some of them in court trying to block it.

Goof Washington
AS I said to others, this issue is subject to rational solution, if people seek one. Your high school kinda attitude really isn't a part of that solution. But , because you have decided you are safe, you feel free to expose your ignorance. Specifically, you write:

"--1) It's not enought oil to make any difference.--

Correct answer is: More is more. More is not less. More is more."

More is more? Brilliant. The issue is how much more is enough. The Saudi decision to pump another 200,000 bbl a day was also more. What was the impact?

"--2) If we pump the oil, it doesn't mean we get to keep it, it goes into the market.--

Correct answer is: Whoever pumps the oil gets to keep either the BTUs or the bucks."

And the "whoever" is not the United States or its citizens. The "whoever" will be oil companies and holding companies. Any oil produced in America is as likely to end up in China as in Chicago.

"--3) Bush and Republicans are to blame.--
Correct answer: It does not matter a baby Chinese rats a** who is to blame for not having drilled previously. Who supports drilling for the oil now and who does not?"

No point in responding to something I did not say. But it is still the case that Bush can remove executive orders which prevent a good deal of continental drilling. He hasn't. Why?

"--4) Current prices are a reflection of futures trading; supply and demand are not as big an issue as instability in the Middle East.---

Correct answer: The announcement today that the U.S. intends to immediately begin to develop these fields via a crash national program will collapse the speculation which is occurring in the oil futures markets."

Remains to be seen. If margins stay as low as they are, nop tmuch of a cut. The Chinese decision to raise their subsidized prices actually will have more of an effect. Any middle east disruption will generate another spike.

You are a simpleminded person.

RE: Don't drill democrats

The leftist democrats (oops, sorry for the redundancy) say "we can't drill our way out of this".

How intellectually dishonest.

Well, dems, you can't "conserve your way out of this" and you can' "alternative energy sources you way out of this" either. You need to do ALL three: drill, conserve and develop.

Drill---and drill NOW!!!!

Sigh...ok, you've established you are a lunatic. Bravo. Let me counter your puke:

"I read your post and now you should realize, why you were never a good student."

-I was a great student. I just never got a PhD in Psychology, which only shows I am not equipped to handle lunatics, but I will try my best with you.

"Don't you love GOD?People like you,The ignorant, are why we are here."

-I am an agnostic, but I love all people who love God. In fact, I'm an ardent supporter for those who feel their beliefs are being trampled on. I'm a fan-o-man. Not a fan-o-flee.

""I want to drive my for the next 30 years and I want to pump gas"."

-If you intend to quote me, copy and paste is always best. Why? Because if you are mentally challenged, which you are, then you will be less likely to misrepresent meanings, which you did. Reread again...slowly...and sound out the words of my post you misquoted. There's a good boy...now repeat...what did Shells really mean by that comment you misquoted?

"France saw the future, understood it and responded.America did not see the future, did not understand what they did not see and failed to respond to same."

-Be a lamb and reread my post again. Did I not mention nuclear energy? Did I not mention energy independance? Did I not say how we could've dealt with this years ago, if not for the eco-idiots?

Now, go lie down for your nap. The doctor will be bring in your meds shortly.

The OTHER "Evil Empire"

It DID NOT MATTER if we had the tech at the time. Just threaten to open up every conceivable source of our own oil and the goat roasting camel shaggers can DRINK their oil or cut the prices drastically. Let's say to 1990 levels for a start.

Thank you

To reduce the price:
You could reduce the price by eliminating all the taxes, and replacing them with ONE proper tax to collect all revenue for each level of government..

Eliminate the 18.4 cents per gallon federal pump tax, and the 32 cents per gallon, PA State pump tax. Eliminate all the other taxes in existence, on all levels of government, which add up to one-third (1/3) of the price – of everything.

You could greatly reduce the price by writing a law which declares that ALL OFFSHORE OIL BELONGS TO THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and hiring the oil companies to drill, pump, refine, and deliver all petroleum products to us for the cost of processing plus 10 cents per gallon profit.

This would eliminate the foreign nations’ price per barrel, the speculators’ add-on charge, the oil-tanker-ship charge, the oil spills when the tanker ships run aground, and the clean-up cost thereof. This would reduce the price for refined petroleum to well under a dollar a gallon, and make us independent of the Arabs and all other oil-selling peoples.

I called
my libtard Congresscritter yesterday, and
told the aide answering the phone exactly what I thought about his statement reported on our local radio (paraphrase) He's against drilling and we should concentrate more on alternative fuels (can we say canned talking point). I asked what do we do in the meantime. No answer from the kid. congresscritter will get back to me via letter. I'm an Independent Reagan
Conservative. Two of my sons and a son in law
depend on gas to run their businesses and it's killing them. I was chewing nails before I
hung up. Media is not going to help, except maybe Fox and talk radio so it's up to us to
spread the word..at the gas pump (someone
mentioned putting a sticker every time you fill up by the pump), anyone and everyone. I embarrass my kids sometimes by talking louder that I should about something political, not so much for my kids but for anyone nearby. Not shouting but loud enough for passerbys to overhear. Who knows, may get them thinking.
Grocery store checkouts whatever, be a one man/woman committee of correspondence.

The Danger of Wrat Wrangling and Ron
It has been said that every problem has a solution that is simple, easy to understand... and wrong.

It really is important that America the makes decisions on real data and seriously rational thinking. Unfortunately, many people hav a tendency to talk first and think later. I propose what Ron and Wrat wrote as an example.

Basically, Ron proposes "writing a law which declares that ALL OFFSHORE OIL BELONGS TO THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA". Wrathead suggests we "Just threaten to open up every conceivable source of our own oil and the goat roasting camel shaggers can DRINK their oil or cut the prices drastically."

Ron ignores the 800 lb guerilla on the oil platform: the oil industry. American is not going to nationalize its oil reserves. Wrat ignores not only the oil industry but the reality that the rest of world even exists. Oil from American sources will be sold like any other commodity on the open market. And if we don't buy OPEC oil, china and india will be happy to.

Jack, the problem...
...with both sides coming together for a solution is this.

The public, or more specifically most of the public, are wanting immediate relief we are now a culture used to having "change" occur at our finger tips. Both sides of the aisle realize that they do not have the magic pill of relief in their respective medicine bags so fault the other as obstructing.

The Dems shot themselves in the foot by claiming before the mid-terms that they had some answers. They didn't and knew it at the time.

The Pretend-To-Be-Republicans shot themselves in the foot by blaming the Dems from blocking exploration. That doesn't wash because they had control all these years and failed to take the lead.

In some ways the higher prices have helped, mostly by starting these discussions, but also making us look at what will work and what isn't feasible.

The whole bio-fuel hysteria is one, you commit more food crops and the resources to grow those crops to the bio-fuel market, in return you have less food available and the energy gained from the bio-fuel is barely more than that used in its production.

For years a lot of farm vehicles, both tractors and trucks, have been fueled by propane. It amazes me this hasn't caught on more with the general public, even the conversion of a pickup is relatively inexpensive, couple hundred dollars, and many agricultural vehicles have been built propane fueled.

The market and the people will drive the energy solution, but only if our self rightious politicians, of both stripes, will stay out of things and allow it to happen.

The tide is turning, stay after it!
Perhaps the pain has been increased to the point where people are finally paying attention. The greens and their bought and paid for party (democrats) may have finally been exposed to enough people.

This is a fight for freedom. The government apparatus needs to be diminshed in every facet of American life.

The next step TERM LIMITS! The people who make the rules should have to live UNDER those same rules, NO EXCEPTIONS!

Obaminsanity
We can not drill our way out of this, he says. Yes, how absurd of us to assume we could lower the prices of a product by dumping more of that product into the market place. What fools we are.

Yet, Obama thinks we can TAX our way out of this problem. Taxing oil companies and penalizing their CEOs will somehow magically make the global cost of fuel go down. No Mr. Obama, it will only make matters worse.

Do democrats really have so little an understanding of how the market functions? Do they really think that attacking oil companies will reduce the price of gas? How would that work exactly? Will the CEOs say, "We had better drop that price if we dont want democrats to keep taxing us!"...?

Or will they take a more logical course, reducing the amount of oil they sell in the US and increasing the oil they sell elsewhere? Do you really need to think about that? They will obviously go where the tax burden is lowest.

As for Obama's coment, it is yet another in a long string of ignorant statements proving his total lack of experience and his naive economic word view.

OIl
Actually a better wya to approach this is to regulate )oooooh, nast word) the oil commodities markets where speculators increase the cost of oil more than the available supply at any one time

POLAR BEARS - PART 1
RULING REVERSED!
POLAR BEARS CREATE CAMPAIGN UPROAR!

Washington, D.C.
-AP

In a surprise announcement today, U.S. government spokesman Dimmitt Bumdas disclosed that the Department of the Interior has removed polar bears from the Endangered Species List. The move amounted to a reversal of action taken by Interior just weeks ago.

A somewhat sheepish Mr. Bumdas announced that "the whole thing was just a geographical oversight". Questioned further by reporters, Mr. Bumdas stated that "the reduced numbers of bears recently observed in the Arctic region apparently came as a result of a large number of the bears having stowed away in the cargo hold of a Carnival Cruise Lines vessel and travelling to the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico, where the creatures were discovered lounging on area beaches, slurping pina coladas, and raiding area fish markets".

Bumdas called the behavior of the bears "perplexing and inexplicable".

The Department of the Interior spokesman then surprised those in attendance by proclaiming the need for a new federally funded program "correct this disturbing problem".

Interior is calling for the program, estimated to cost some $800 billion over the next 35 years, in order to corral the vacationing bears and return them to the Arctic ice floes "where they are supposed to be", according to Bumdas.

The plan includes, the spokesman said, a re-education component wherein polar bears will be taught by federal bear instructors to believe that "grouper and red snapper DO NOT taste just as good as salmon and seals", and that "the idea that summering in the Yucatan is preferable to clambering about frigid Bering Sea ice floes is, well, simply misguided".

The Robert Emmett Ginna Nuclear Power Station went from groundbreaking to going on line 1n 42 months. Every domestic nuclear plant built since took ten years. The difference between these times is the amount of paperwork which does not guarantee more safety. Every nuclear power plant that was built in the US was designed to maximum safety standards. Don't cite TMI 2 which worked as it was supposed to, but was turned off by plant personnel for questionable reasons(?).

Hey Arnie, CA's treasure is oil.

If I happen to like my Senator and believe they are doing the job I want them to do then I do not want my choice of who represents me taken away.

Now maybe I don't like some Senator from, say Illinois, or New York maybe, possibly Mass-A-Freakin-Chews-Its. But that's not my call, those folks elect them, not me and if they want to keep electing them then that's up to them and I'll just keep complaining.

I don't like the idea that my choice of representation can be taken out of my hands. That's my problem with term limits.

Drilling or walking
Shell stop an operation in Africa because a attack on a drilling operations. It would not take much to shut down many similar type of operations in Africa. If this spread into Mexico and those pipe lines were cut. Venezuela has similar problem if their oil fields were shut down. Stopping the flow of either gasoline or raw oil is easy and it would cause certain people like Harry Reid about not drilling or watch America walk.

POLAR BEARS - PART 2
Underlining the significance of this developing story, Senator Barack Obama weighed in on the developing controversy from the campaign trail in Oregon. Senator Obama met privately with reporters after speaking at a campaign rally before some 850,000 supporters, where, incidentally, it was reported that more than 700,000 persons had to be revived after fainting.

Citing the plight of the bears as a sure sign of the hopelessness enveloping the entire Western Hemisphere, with the exception of parts of Cuba and Venezuela, Senator Obama called for sweeping change.

"These are typical white bears, clinging to their tropical drinks and seafood, who cannot be expected to understand what is needed to preserve their own well-being", the handsome and dynamic young Senator declared. He then concluded his remarks by assuring the entranced reporters that "if elected in November, I will bring change that all bears can believe in".

...do you propose to do this regulating? Seeing as how it is a world market I guess we could nominate the UN, they always do such a bang up job on everything else.

Late today, the controversy, now being called Beargate in some Washington circles, escalated further still when a supporter fo the campaign of Republican Senator John McCain joined the growing fray.

Alaskan state Republican Committee chairperson Bridgit Nowierre questioned the sentiments underlying the statements by Senator Obama. "I object to the use of the term "typical white bears" by Senator Obama", she declared. "When elected, Senator McCain will equally represent black bears, brown bears, Kodiak bears, and yes, even grizzlies", Nowierre stated.

email from Senator Jim Inhofe...

Dear Friend,

Boy did we hit a nerve on Monday. It's no surprise -- the national average for a gallon of gas is over $4 and the Democrat Senate leadership is sitting on their hands. When we sent our pulse poll we expected 1-2,000 votes. Well we had over 8,000 votes and our highest day of website traffic since we launched our campaign website last year.

Today, as promised, I want to hear from you about what solutions we should focus on. That's why I'm announcing a Gas Price Reduction Survey. We all agree that $4 for a gallon of gas is crippling family budgets, but what the folks here in Washington don't agree on is what to do about it.

I'm asking you to participate in this Gas Price Reduction Survey to send a message to leaders in Washington. You'll indicate exactly what methods for lowering gas prices you support, and I'll share the results with my colleagues. And to make sure each voice is heard, I'm asking you to please forward the survey on to your friends and family as well.

On the site, you'll also learn about the many ways I've been fighting for years to lower prices at the pump. Whether it is increasing America's refining capacity, expanding exploration for domestic sources of oil and gas, or investing in cutting-edge alternative fuels that Oklahoma is a national leader in, I've been a strong supporter of decreasing the cost of energy as well as reducing our dependence on foreign oil.

So please click here to take the survey and learn more.

Thank you for all you do,

Jim Inhofe

P.S. The debate on gas prices is ongoing and the price of gas isn't getting any lower, so be sure to make your voice heard by participating in the Gas Price Reduction Survey now.

THIS COMING ELECTION

NOW, WHEN CONGRESS IS CAUSING THE SECOND AMERICAN REVOLUTION, THEY ARE WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE OF THE AMERICAN PATRIOTS THAT THEY ARE SCREWING. THESE PATRIOTS WILL NOT BE THROWING CASES OF TEA OVERBOARD TO SINK OR FLOAT OUT TO SEA.

POLAR BEARS - PART 4
Meanwhile, reports have arrived from our correspondent dispatched to the scene in Mexico. AP international correspondent Felix Goode spoke to one polar bear he encountered lying near the surf outside the port city of Progreso. Speaking with our reporter between sips of Corona Light, and while snacking on a mackerel, the bear, who identified himself only as "Whitey", seemed surprised at all of the attention. "I certainly didn't mean to cause a big fuss", the animal explained. Asked by our reporter why he and his fellow bears decided to come to Mexico, the creature flatly stated that "it seemed like a good idea at the time". The indolent animal then borrowed a pair of sunglasses and a bottle of sunscreen from our correspondent, crawled under a coconut palm and fell asleep.

Additional reporters have been assigned to this story as the controversy grows to worldwide proportions. We will keep readers abreat of new developments as soon as further information becomes available.

Lemme add my thoughts...
The socialist Dems don't want to drill for oil while we await the development of alternative energy. Most conservation conservative Reps want to drill and want to develop alternate energy at the same time.

Lifting the ban on offshore drilling won't force California to drill offshore; it will allow those states that want to drill, to drill. Quit your whining, energy girly-man, and stop holding other coastal states hostage.

Honda officially offered its hydrogen fuel cell car here in So Cal to those who can afford the $600 a month lease (like Jamie Lee Curtis). Honda says it won't be available for mass market for another 10 YEARS! Why put in the effort if it's going to take so long?

Let's not forget, either, Obama's comment about his support of high gas prices, but his chagrin that it happen so quickly instead of gradually. He and his party want high gas prices, regardless of the impact on average Americans.

Say NO! to socialism ... say NO! to Obama

Supply and demand and drilling
To lower gas prices do the following:
1. Announce that drilling can immediately start at ANWAR. Immediate price reduction a pumps, $0.25 per gallon.

2. Announce that drilling can start at domestic off-shore sites. Immediate price reduction at pumps, $0.25 per gallon.

3. Announce that the subsidy on corn grown for ethanol is eliminated. Immediate price reduction at pumps, $0.25 per gallon.

4. Announce that tariffs on Brazilian sugar cane grown for ethanol are eliminated. Immediate price reduction at pumps, $0.25 per gallon.

5. Announce that six new refining plants will be built. Immediate price reduction at pumps, $0.25 per gallon.

6. Announce that 10 or more nuclear energy plants will be built. Immediate price reduction at pumps, $o.75 per gallon.

Total reduction $2.00 a gallon. All that was done was a simple announcement. Not difficult. Followed up by congressional action. Remember, THEY WORK FOR US!

Lets see, which party is going to do this?

Revolt Comes From the Middle Class
It is an established fact that all revolt comes from the middle class. The upper class has everything their own way and don't want to rock the boat. The poor are too busy trying to acquire the next meal to worry about changing things - and they don't have the funds to do it anyway.

But the United States has one of the largest middle classes in the world. If you want to eliminate the chance of revolt here, you have to eliminate the middle class here. One of the ways is to deny them jobs (by making it too expensive to run factories here), make their expenses too high (by making them spend extra for some needed product like energy and food), and increase taxation to take what is left.

Take a look at what is going on in Washington now. High fuel prices do to lack of drilling, high food prices due to the ethanol fiasco, high taxes for various reasons like free medical, and high taxes on manufactored goods which sends the factories overseas.

Have you ever wondered what the politicians are afraid we might object to them doing?

If the Dems had not blocked drilling and were nmot afraid of environmentalists 10 years ago we would now hjave oil.

Ed is correct. The required margin for stock purchases is 50%, i.e. you have to put down 50% of the actual cost in order to control a block of stock in teh future. The margin for some commodities, oil being one, is 5-7%, suggesting a speculator only has to put down 5-7% of hte cost of controlling a huge oil contract inteh future. These low margins encourage long term speculation, which is one of the main reasons for oil price increases.

The control can be done in the US. The International Commodities Exchange is in Atlanta.

Was 65% plus "for" first 250 votes, down now to 40% "for" in an hour. Seems like there was a definite push the other way. So...Let's get it back over 50% and beyond

DUH!
the candidate who owns the issue of how to combat the rising price of fuel - and how it fuels rising inflation across the board - will be elected in november. every other issue, from national security, to healthcare, to the green issues ties directly to this.

rac47, stop smoking that stuff
1. Announce drilling in ANWR. Sierra Club holds hearings with congress, taxpayers foot bill for lawmakers to preen in front of cameras. Price at pump goes up $0.25.

2. Announce drilling off shore. Green Peace dispatches leaky diesel consuming boat in protest, it probably sinks taxpayers stuck with salvage and clean up costs. Price at pump goes up $0.25.

3. Announce subsidy on corn for bio-fuel eliminated. Farmers go back to growing other crops, government bails out bankrupt ethonal manufacturers. Price at pump goes up $0.25, not because there was any real impact, just because.

4. Announce tariffs on Brazilian sugar cane grown for ethanol. Brazil now exports sugar cane to rum distillers, don't pay tarrifs, government bails out more ethonal manufacturers. Price at pump goes up, See Corn Above.

5. Announce six new refinories being built. First submit all environmental impact studies, EPA guide line adherance papers and proofs of compliance. Price at pump rises $0.50.

6. Announce 10 new nuclear power plants to be constructed immediately. Oh shoot, here I'll go you one better. Announce ONE new nuclear plant to be constructed in 10 years. Wait for laughter to stop, watch price at pump....... well okay, it might not change on this cause they knew it wouldn't stand a snowballs chance in Hades.

As to your call for congressional action, the only thing they act fast on are their pay raises, your tax hikes and the mad scramble to see which one of them gets the seat nearest a camera & micraphone. Remember IF they worked, they would work for us but a broken tool don't work for nobody.

Gretchen...
Thanks.

How to lower gas prices immediately
Simply by requiring the CFTC to regulate the oil futures contract trading of large banks and hedge funds, the price of gasoline could drop as much as 50% within two weeks. How? According to the Senate inquiry a few weeks ago, the experts said that as much as one-third of the price of a barrel of oil is from speculation, one-third from the devaluation of the dollar, and one-third supply and demand. Regulation of banks' oil futures trading would dry up the excess speculation. The futures price would fall. The physical supply would increase by the hoarders rushing to deliver as the price drops.

Normally, I don't like regulation but this correction is long over-due. What surprises most is that the same person who engineered the Enron-loophole is also now heading up the CFTC. Talk about the fox guarding the hen-house. Campaign contributions from the big players would also dry up, which is why this subject is back-burnered in the Senate, and all we hear is about drilling which will have little effect unless the speculation is stopped.

Unregulated speculation by big players has caused a massive disconnect between supply of the physical and the futures demand, which no increase of physical supply can resolve. If we get more oil, it must still be priced in the commodities market, which will not go down unless the CFTC does its job to curb the big players who are only in it for the money and not for delivery.

There is a down-side to reducing the price of gasline: banks would lose the cushion they need against massive write-downs from the lending mess they got themselves into.

This is one reason
If Obama gets to be President, we will have the second incarnation of Jimmy Carter. We will again see gas prices skyrocket, and we will probably have more fun and games with the Iranians and others who smell weakness like sharks smell blood.

We'll have a one term liberal administration followed by another conservative revolution.

the problem - I don't want our country to suffer from Carter II. Lots of people will be hurting, and I don't want to see that. McCain is probably mediocre, but that's ok; it's like having a President Ford vs. a President Carter.

Jack
Not being a stock trader I may be wading in deeper waters than is prudent, but hey, I'll give it a shot.

The Commodities Exchange may very well be in Atlanta, I'll take you at your word, but do they have jurisdiction over the sale of all commodities world wide? I guess we should say specifically oil in this case. And would that stop me from buying the oil in the "regulated" market, regardless of what % I paid up front, then turning around and making a seperate deal with you? We could, you and I, then set up our own price and payment structure since the oil now belongs to me.

And don't you think having the control in the US seems a little, well, unseemly. The US is normally accused of being to great over consumer, now you propose we also be the watch dog?

leroy, not sure where u are in TX
but I know that, if you go east on I-30 from dallas, you'll see many dozens of new wells pumping oil & gas from uncapped wells. this is a recent development. is it, then, just a coincidence that gas prices in north texas have lagged behind the rest of the county? if gas prices can rise like a rocket on the threat of violence in the middle east, storms in the gulf of mexico, or a hint from opec, isn't it realistic to assume that such announcements could quickly drive prices downward?

Jack
"Ron ignores the 800 lb guerilla on the oil platform"

When did the terrorists get to the oil platforms?

Dems don't do Economics!
The problem with Will and others like him who have been drinking "Greenie Kool-Aid" too long is they all think new oil production must "Hit the Street" before it can have any impact on the price of gas at the pump! Silly Greenies, they just don't fathom the workings of the international commodities market in futures.

Even the Saudis will tell them oil is priced too high at $140 a barrel; a more reasonable price would be around $100/barrel if we can cool off speculation in the futures market and possibly do something to strengthen the dollar in world markets. These as both reasonable short-term countermeasures to the rising cost of oil! The Federal Reserve is planning to begin raising interest rates again starting in July; that will help with the exchange rate problem. Now if we can just start drilling for new resources off shore we could all have more Green in our pockets by Christmas!

Merry Christmas Greenies!

How to lower gas prices immediately
Mike139, you bring up a good point. But doing anyting 'immediately' would create a rubber-band shock. I agree that such regulation is necessary, but to decelerate the speculative rise gradually, then perhaps a gradual implementation of such regulation would be in order. Even announcing the intention to regulate it would have a shock effect on markets, and that's not something to rush into. Especially since many retirement and hedge funds are now, at least partially, invested in oil speculation profits.

the perfect storm has been...
brewing and we are about to feel the fulll effects. Liberals are poised to take a giant leap forward and realize their long held dream of full fledged Socialism as more and more Americans are turning to government as their only avenue of relief.

Terrorists being turned loose in the American Courts

The American public is right where they want us to be, frustrated and unable to control the risk of everyday life on even the most personal level.

How about this scenario....
2009 - President Obama, after unilateral meetings with trade a trade delegation from the Peoples Republic of China and with Hugo Chavez of Venezuela, announces that "these talks have been a great successful. Mr. Chavez is a man who I can work with and the Chinese are no longer our competitors, but are now our global partners".

Jan. 1,2010 - The Associated Press confirms that a consortium of Chiness business interests, with technical and logistical assistance from the Venequelan National Oil Company, have brought online the largest oilfield in the world just 90 miles off the coast of Northern Virginia, approximately 140 miles from Washington, D.C.

Jan. 2, 2010 - President Obama to Chinese leadership and Chavez..."hey guys, what are you doing? I thought you liked me".

Jan. 3, 2010 - Chinese and Chavey to Obama..."s**** you, you silly little pin-headed fool. This is change YOU can believe in, little man. Why don't you go back to Chicago and do some 'community organizing' before you get hurt. We're taking this oil".

Obama-Messiah on Iraq War
We can't let the American soldiers win the war in Iraq because it would hurt our 'collective' power grab.

NEWSFLASH: Many members in the MSM are seeking relief for depression because of the reports that the American soldiers are winning the war in Iraq.

Obama-Messiah will do his best to ensure that America will lose the war against terrorism to bring 'Hope' to Democrats and the MSM.

Obama-Messiah wants the Democrats and the MSM to concentrate on leg shivers and involuntary orgasms to ease the pain and depression of the American soldiers winning the war in Iraq - SCOTUS applauds the Obama-Messiah effort.

*Free tin foil hat fitting for everyone voting for Obama-Messiah.

Hugh WTF?
I totally agree we have to explore all options and have no sacred cows when it comes to energy production, but the bottom line is we won't drill our way out of this. We have to begin reducing consumption as well, it's just that simple and turning off the AC is a good start. Since when did we become a nation of pansies who can't take a little heat? Is it impossible for people in this country to sacrifice for the greater good? The thousands serving overseas(without AC) tells me no.

resourceguy...
...I know the area your talking about. Those fields are the result of the salt domes in that region and all the easy to get to and larger deposits had been tapped years ago, not all of them tapped out but drilled to. Here recently it has been worth it for them to go back and locate the smaller pockets.

I'm down south, it would take the better part of the day for me to get to that area, but I'm pretty familiar with it. Some folks I know live out towards Van and some of my mothers people moved towards Marshal here some many years back (I don't know why).

Get out of my face!
I am so tired of green this and green that being shoved in my face everywhere I turn! Shut up with all this crap! Talk about indoctrination -quit with all this "future" $hit and do something practical NOW. The eco-alarmists extremists have managed to kidnap our entire country and hold us in bondage. The silent majority needs to rise up and roar back in their green faces!

The DDDs
The "liberals" are constantly trying to redeem themselves for how screwed up they made this country. They try to shift blame by turning what made this country great into the pejorative of "big oil" and other such nonsensical zingers that become popular with ignoramuses who can't or are too lazy to think. Some brilliant liberal figured out how to gain control by ruining the public education system and thereby everything else that once made this country great. Get ready folks. Because of their ignorance we're headed for marxist/socialism.

Blanco
If we can't drill our way out of this mess,we sure as hell can't conserve our way out.

Forcing the cost of
energy beyond the ability of most Americans to pay, will for sure cut our usage. It will also cause a huge rise in home 'walk-aways' such as the poorer folks in the cold states leaving houses they can no longer afford to heat and jobs to which they can longer afford to commute. The warmer south will draw many of them. The real estate depression and closed business's they leave behind will break the budgets of the northern states as the tax worth of all property declines.
The democratic answer, as seen in states like Michigan, is to raise taxes still further. That has already proved to invoke the law of diminishing returns. What will the welfare community do when the teat dries up? When the tax payers have all left town? I am afraid we will see. It will not be pretty!
Everything we produce, buy, sell and maintain depends on some form of energy. When the democratic led congress willfully allows and actually causes energy's cost to escalate out of some fervor for a socialistic corruption of 'Luddite Green God' they are dooming millions of Americans to harsh lives of deprivation and despair. In their power crazed and brutal hearts they could not care less!

You may think that your particular democrat representative is a 'good person' but none-the-less, you must know that they are forcibly intimidated by their party leaders into following the dictates of the far left extremists who now rule. Drop them, now!

Obama says he wants change. So do we, we the struggling American tax payers he yearns to further indenture beyond the reported 57 trillion dollars we already owe.
We can start that change by voting out the totally bought and paid for democratic leadership (and Rinos) and returning to a government that has the best interests of all of us in mind.

Your namesake may have had "Wooden Teeth" but at lease he did not have a "Wooden Brain".Sir you add Nothing to this debate when try to inflame a already "Tenuous" situation. No one is going to drill outside of Virginia. There are somethings that Venezuela and China are doing in concert, that will secure their energy needs for the future.I have written a book for President Chavez,we share the same birthday(July 27),which will give him an overview of world economics moving forward.Energy for China is an issue but not a real problem. They have the benefit of our past efforts to learn from, as they institute "Market Based Economics".Your challenge lacked purpose and I have decided to ignore it based on those grounds.

Gretchen...
Once again, I thank you. Glad you enjoyed it. I dabble at political satire for stress relief. Hope to collect enough to do a book one day.

Drill AND Conserve!
JAX33

I'd thought about making the same point in an earlier post, but didn't. We always hear Liberals chanting their mantra, "We can't Drill our way out of this", but we seldom hear conservatives respond with the obvious, "We can't conserve our way out either!" Thanks for making the point!

Gunner

Leroy, Mike is Absolutely Right.
In fact, the ICE only began trading in oil futures a short time ago. Prior to that, oil was traded in markets where the margins were much closer to what is required in securities trading. Funny, huh?

Nothing would prevent you from setting up an individual deal. But would you promise me a thousand barrels of oil at $150 dollars a barrel (1.5 million dollars) if I only had $75000 in the bank?

THis is substantially a result of speculation and dollar devaluation, as Mike indicated.

Fishing for fools...
I've been fishing for liberals all day (since my 9:52 post) and all I've caught is one puny little "jack" fish and a medium-sized "killer" fish. "jack" was too small and had to be thrown back. "killer" was big enough, but, as I'm sure you are aware, liberal fish are just no good to eat. I've tried smoking 'em on my slow-cooking outdoor grill, sauteed with onions, garlic, and wine...nothing you can do to get rid of that foul taste.

It sure is fun to catch them, though.

REDEEMING QUALITY ???
"No Man is an Island!" and I am socially very active with many political friends to which I request this simple question seeking a pausible response:

Name one - just 1 - redeeming quality relative to Barack Barry Hussain bin Obama?

Otherwise would I allow my children in an automobile with this man driving and if so the answer is affirmative, WHY?

Wake up
Folks, congress does work for us and it is time we take it back. If we do not vote in this upcoming election, then we are part of the problem. Anyone, and I mean anyone who says "We cannot drill our way out of this" is a fool and needs to turned out of office. Until the American people start voting at the 80% to 90% level or higher, we will continue to have these idiots running things in Washington. Quit complaining and TAKE ACTION!

oil
great article, I think as the price of oil continues to rise the environmentalist will become louder as they see their power starting to slip. Unfortunately the terrorists want Obama in the white house sp another attach won't be happening soon, until he pulls the troops put of iraq. Then with the next attack
and maybe the disruption of the food chain. There will be recipes for polar bear stew on the menu. I know that it appears that we have two choices for the election McCain a liberal
or obama, a socialist. I don't understand how so many people can consistently be on the wrong side of the issues. Wake up Rome is burning.

Average American Family
Back in 1973 in the "Oil Crisis" then, the government ran an article on the AVERAGE AMERICAN FAMILY.

The family selected (in 1973, remember) had four teenage sons. The dad and mother both worked with a combined salary of about $120,000. (I was making $750 a month and was one of the better paid people in my county.) They had three cars, two pickups, four motor bikes, four snow mobiles, a 60 foot camper with its own drive, a sauna, and a greenhouse. They used so much gas that the dad kept a 1000 gallon tank in the front yard and bought the gas for it. They also had a farm 80 miles away with another two pickups, three tractors, and other assorted powered equipment.

This was the family the government thought was AVERAGE. I can see why Congress believes that they can tax us into using less fuel. They believe the majority of us are millionares. After all, they are and they certainly consider themselves average Americans, now don't they?

I don't know about the rest of you, but many around here in Texas has to drive as much as 80 miles a day one way to work. We carpool where we can and drive as little as possible on the weekends. But we can't really reduce our driving much more. Many of the industrial plants where we work have no housing within miles in any direction so we can't move closer.

This will probably end with rationing as they did in WWII. If you remember, the Congressmen then had unlimited ration coupons for their own use and the rich could buy all they wanted. Only the poor suffered.

Will In Calif.
I only just began reading this long list of comments...are you in some sort of dire predicament? our 2.5 year old car now has about 15K on it...our extra fuel expenditures are easily absorbable...sorry I'm in no predicament, not to mention "dire" predicament...

TICK TOCK, TICK TOCK
The dems in D.C. are wise enough to get media coverage they are trying to ease the energy crisis while actually doing long term harm. However, it's an election year and they are successful in convincing their IQ challenged constituency of how they are going to solve everyone's problems. Similar to Rome, right before in disintegrated.

I'm all for a third party called Conservatives. The politicos have steadily leaned to the left since Reagan - both parties. I hope Romney's already getting ready for the "four years from now" turnaround he will have to implement. So Mitt, start doing the ground work now so you can start the recovery effort on day one of your administration.
