Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

How does an intervention in a caucus work? This needs to be answered because the House Republicans need one, and very soon.

In the past three weeks I have spoken on air with every member of the GOP leadership: Republican Leader Boehner, Republican Whip Blunt, Republican Deputy Whip Cantor and Chairman of the National Republican Congressional Caucus Tom Cole. Each is a solid conservative, and each is strong supporter of victory in Iraq.

And none would utter even the mildest criticism of their GOP colleagues who are in the process of deserting the war effort, “emboldening the enemy,” to use Congressman Cole’s words, and sending a message to American allies and yes our enemies that the desire to cut and run now has bipartisan support.

Two weeks ago Senator Mitch McConnell skillfully led his chamber’s GOP caucus away from the edge of political ruin. Senate rules gave McConnell an advantage Boehner does not enjoy: McConnell could block a vote if only 40 Republicans would join with Joe Lieberman to refuse to allow defeatism to go official. Senator McConnell gathered more than enough votes, and the 32,000+ signatures at TheNRSCPledge.com helped get the attention of waverers who might have thought a little political cover a useful thing. The victory Republicans in the party’s base made it clear that there are no “free votes” on the war. It is one of at most two issues –the other being Supreme Court nominees—for which political absolution down the road is not an option.

The House does not play by the Senate’s rules, and Democrats will get their up-or-down vote on their white flag resolution. GOP leadership’s ill-conceived effort to try a Bud light version of the Democrats’ telegram to terrorists of fading American will was abandoned after it became evident that this was simply not an option with the base. That was the good news.

But then, incredibly, the leadership chose not the “whip” the vote. That means they decided not to lean on Republicans who have soured on the war and who are declaring for defeat.

The outrage that had been directed at the Senate’s waverers only two weeks ago is now building and erupting against not just the round heeled Republicans, but also with much more fury at the leadership.

One of the original organizers of the Porkbusters’ effort, N.Z. Bear has now opened up The Victory Caucus, and sign-ups to engage in activism directed against the GOP’s defeatism are pouring in. While the Victory Caucus will be devoted to much more than political activism –there are links to key organizations supporting the troops like the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund and SoldiersAngels, as well as news feeds on the war and key media clips—a clear emphasis will be on focusing the political energy of the millions of Americans who understand the stakes in the war and want those stakes articulated and defended on the Hill.

And right now that means facilitating the connection of the furious with the furrowed brows among GOP leaders on the Hill. It seems clear that the GOP leadership is simply oblivious and wholly out-of-touch with the party’s base. The leadership seems not to understand that it cannot be understood to be serious about the war if it is not serious about this resolution, and it cannot be serious about the resolution if this is a “free vote” for which Republicans defecting to the Democrats feel no political pain.

Congressman Tom Cole has the unenviable job of trying to put the GOP majority back together again. What he is hearing tonight after an appearance on my program yesterday is that his NRCC isn’t going to be getting any help from thousands of Republicans and independents who simply will not send money to an organization that will support the re-election of Republicans in the House who vote for the Democrats’ resolution. Whether Congressman Cole is genuinely unaware of the sentiment in the grassroots, indifferent to it, or simply unsure of how to respond doesn’t really matter. The NRCC is going to wake up on Saturday with a resentment against the House Republicans that is set in concrete.

The anger with the GOP leadership isn’t over the fact that the GOP is going to lose the vote.

It is very much a result of the fact that the GOP didn’t fight.

The tone-deafness among the Congressional leadership is astonishing. And it goes much deeper than just this vote, though this vote is a neon sign flashing incompetence the size of the Goodyear blimp. In my interview with Cole (transcript here), the Congressman stated that the NRCC wasn’t ready to roll out a list of targeted districts, that it didn’t want to “bless” candidates in primaries even if those candidates were veterans of Iraq or Afghanistan, and that generally, he understood the dilemma of Republicans voting for the Democrats’ resolution.

My lines and e-mail box were instantly filled with missives from voters in the Tucson area who know all too well that the NRCC did in fact take sides in a GOP primary there in 2006 and who are deeply bitter about it. This illustrates that in the new media world, Congressmen have to be very careful to always convey the absolute truth. I am sure Congressman Cole intended to say that he didn’t think it was a good idea to play in primaries, but it came off as though the Beltway elite could once again head fake the grassroots.

Congressman Cole’s somewhat condescending platitudes on candidate recruitment also set off listeners. These are people who have donated hundreds and thousands of dollars over the years to Republican candidates. They don’t want Marcus Welby telling them to take two aspirins and call in a couple of days, or to assure them that it is too early to start campaign 2008.

They want a Republican Rahm Emmanuel, and if they don’t get him, they aren’t going to hang around by the door waiting for their 96 hour campaign instructions. The astonishment at Republican lassitude is hardening into bitterness, a bitterness which if not arrested soon guarantees the GOP a long stay in the minority. “Leather chair” Congressman, as one caller put it, may want their jobs more than victory or a majority, and they will be getting just that.

The Republicans were defeated in November, but not routed. Mark Foley and the MSM helped the terrorists in the campaign to retire the Republican majority, but it was the sixth year of an eight year presidency, and a lot of the losses were extremely close run things. To fallback, regroup, and go on the offensive seemed to be the obvious steps to take. Instead it looks like the caucus is a sign-on-the-door, not an organization, and the leadership is channeling Bob Michaels, not Newt Gingrich.

If instead of refusing to whip the caucus, the GOP leadership had appeared on the steps of the Congress with five candidates for targeted districts, each one of whom was a veteran of Iraq or Afghanistan or the Horn of Africa, and each of those candidates declared that while they could not vote for victory today they would be there in two years to do so, each one of those candidates would have had a surge of financial and organizational support that would have been epic.

Instead my audience heard Congressman Cole telling them it was too early to be talking about targeted districts.

No, Congressman, it is too late. There is a war going on, and the political front at home is the crucial front. It is on the political front in D.C. that the enemy in Iraq intends to win. Soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines, their families and supporters expect the Representatives and Senators to treat the war as the life-or-death struggle that it is, not another election issue. The GOP has not been doing so, and it needs to start doing so.

On Saturday I spoke in Phoenix, to a gathering of the men of the Valley Presbyterian Church in Scottsdale. One gentleman, Charlie, a little older than me, approached me to give me an update on his son, currently deployed in Afghanistan. His son’s expected return to the States after a year had been delayed and his deployment extended for four months in anticipation of the Taliban’s spring offensive. It was hard news to receive, but his pride in his son and confidence in the rightness of the mission was obvious.

I expect from the victory Republicans a political toughness that at least reflects 10% of the genuine courage demonstrated by the this man and his father.

I expect a bluntness of speech equal to the bluntness of the risk these troops face, and an unwillingness to tolerate the sort of fence-sitting which makes sense on highway bills and ANWR drilling, but which cannot be countenanced on resolutions “emboldening the enemy.”

In short, I expect –and apparently so do thousands of others—the Republicans on the Hill to act as though they are willing to sacrifice something –including perceived political advantage—to win the war.

Mr. Hewitt, you're just a bit confused.
I follow what Mr. Hewitt is writing, but I do not see the conundrum he alludes to. Of course there is a massive retreat among politicians where the war on terrorism is concerned. Public opinion has shifted away from supporting our anti jihadists efforts, so our elected officials must do the same.

The only thing I can figure is that Hugh has not kept up with the modern definition of the word "leader". It used to be that a leader was someone that went in a certain direction, and people that had been pursuaded to go in that direction were called "followers". Now, the correct definition of a leader is a person that senses where the people are going, and alters his course to go in that same direction.

A contemporary "leader" cannot afford the humiliation of having people not believe in what he feels is right, so he has to continuously alter his course in oder to make sure he is taking them anywhere they want to go. The best leaders are those that sense the shift early, and run to the front of the pack before the other "leaders" can get there.

So Hugh, get yourself a modern dictionary (you'll recognize it on the shelf: it's the one with the twenty seven chapters devoted to the expanded version of the word "racism), and you'll be better equipped to understand the confusion you experienced during your recent interviews.

Note to self: Market a shoulder mounted rear view mirror that can be used to keep track of political "leaders" during campaign stops.

So we are in for another fight
WHAT'S NEW about that? Some are getting a little 'war weary' but the vast majority , imho, do want to WIN.

And let's be honest - republican leadership is - lacking and HAS been for how long? They just let everyone do his/her thing anymore. And sometimes more to the point, where would the leaders lead them?

Not like ld of course, I can think of another reason to look over your shoulder - but I wouldn't want to get censored.

And other Non-binding Things.........
Hugh,

You nailed it, and the reason why I left the RNC.

As long as the Grand Old Party is willing to politicize the War, embolden the enemy and fence sit on the porous border, I am willing to donate, and vote elsewhere.

Any chance Conservatives will retake the Republican Party?

GOP Leadership wrong
The GOP leadership has been wrong on a lot of scores in the past few years and appears to be continuing their mistakes. it has been evident to me from the statements they have made in the news and in the postings that they have made on TH, that they still do not understand why the GOP lost so many seats in November. A lesson not learned is a lesson that will bite again.

The Banana Republic Option.
Anybody ever think how easy it is for only a few of our military to become the "leaders?" Yes, there is a little group of Colonels and Captains, who control virtually all the fire power of this nation's resources. Ultimately, in every society, when the politicians lose their will to the mob, military leaders know what to do. The result is usually not a pretty picture. Our elected ones would do well to be mindful of their limitations.

How are these turncoats reelected?
Do the Republicans in their districts know that they are a bunch of weenies?

Sometimes I think that most people don't pay attention, and that the squeeky wheel gets the proverbial grease.

I say grease the floor under them to facilitate their speedy exit!

hosekuervo: "Perfect Plan"
Sorry to differ with you (actually, I'm not) but it wasn't the war that cost the Republicans the house and senate; there were other things that drove the Republican base to not vote for their representatives while still arriving at the polls in large numbers.

Where I just moved from, Ohio, the GOP base is solidly behind victory in Iraq, Afganistan, and anywhere else that we have to go to ulitmately defeat Islamo-fascism in all it's medieval and backward facets. People like Mike DeWine (and George Voinovich should pay close attention) lost their seats mostly because they failed to be what they promised when they were elected; proponents of small government, lower taxes, finding a means of fixing the SSA and Medicare debacles, prolife, and being strong on immigration control and national security. The GOP, as a group, on capitol hill have failed in every facet of those promises. The result is that the "RINO's" of the GOP are largely gone, and the remainder are still there only because they are indeed conservatives or they weren't up for reelection. This is very different from the Democrat Party which locksteps behinds its candidates no matter who they are and what they've done; see John Rockefeller (having a staffer generate a memo outlining means to leaking classified intelligence, at the right time, to embarass the president and damage the war effort), Ted Kennedy (murder), John Murtha (unindicted ABSCAM accomplice), Chuck Schumer (ordering staffer to break into opponents bank and other financial accounts), Hillary Clinton (white water, castle rock, national health care, public education in Arkansas to name just a few), Harry Reid (failure to declare income from unethical realestate practices, hiring his sons to work for him on his campaign staff), Barney Frank (claiming that he had no knowledge of his live-in boyfriend running a gay prostitution ring from Barney's DC apartment), Gary Studds (affair with a 17 y.o. male page), etc., etc., etc.

When you get away from the candidates and get into the values issues and referendum votes, conservatives showed that they are extremely vibrant and active. They turned out in large numbers to vote on "moral" issues but chose not to vote for the pretenders and bozos that pass for their elected officials. Hugh is correct in concluding that the GOP (NRCC, NSCC, and RNC) have been largely tone deaf with the results. Rather than electing exciting genuinely conservative individuals like Mike Pence (IN 6th District) and Norm Coleman (MN Senator) to positions of leadership within the minority, it's the same old feckless boobs (John Boehner (OH 8th District) and Trent Lott that are now at the head of the party. Throw in a couple more RINO's like Mel Martinez and Mike Duncan to head the RNC, and the GOP has a long hard row to hoe. My personal preferences to head the RNC, having met and spoken with the man, and knowing quite a bit about the other one, would have been Ken Blackwell (OH Secretary of State) and Michael Steele (MD Lt. Governor). These two men are remarkably intelligent, forthcoming, well spoken, and very conservative. Great opportunities lost, and along with those lost opportunities will be more seats in the hosue and senate in 2008 unless the leadership really wakes up.

Wrong, Hugh.
"Mark Foley and the MSM helped the terrorists in the campaign to retire the Republican majority..."

Um, no Hugh. It was our party's straying from it's principles, of limited government, individual freedom, personal rights and responsibilites, commitment to federalist principles, and more, and the arrogance of too many party "leaders" (why didn't they take strong action against Foley, for instance, instead of waiting for his behavior to be outed by the MSM and the Dems? Power before principles, anyone?)

And can you cite any evidence that "the terrorists" had any "campaign" to retire the Republican majority? That is nonsense. As was shown on 9/11, those who hate America do not care which Americans they target; their only campaing is to try to harm America and Americans, be they Republican or Democrat, conservative or liberal, straight or gay, white or black, theist or atheist, etc...

The GOP has only itself to blame for it's debacle. The GOP alone can only correct it's mistakes, IF it is interested in returning to being a party of principle, not mere politics.

What GOP Leadership
Both the dims and the RINO's have forgotten why we are at War. The muslims don't like us. As a matter of fact they get 72 virgins if they kill us. We have been fighting them since the Crusades. They didn't like us then and they sure as hell don't like us now. No, we didn't find WMD's but if they went to the Bekka valley I'm sure they would find what they are looking for. I'm personally sick and tired of the dims worrying about what the world thinks. Maybe France will bail them out when the next tsunami hits. The politicians are doing now exactly what they did in Vietnam. The have lost their cajones. As a Vietnam Veteran I am committed to making sure our soldiers never receive the treatment we did. My only hope if the country continues along this course is that when the next attack hits that it is in Hollywierd or the elitist Northeast. Then maybe the moonbats will wake up

List.
To the fools of the Democratic Party who come here to repete the lies Lt. Kerry told them, the
vote
in 2006 was not so the Democrats could cut and run, it was about President Bush and the leadership of the Republican Party dishing the base. It was about the stupid "ROE's" that are getting our family members who are in the National Guard kill needlessly. It was about the Open Borders, the job requirements of many Cities and County and States "to apply you must speak English and SPANISH" other wise do not apply. It was about John McCain a suposed leader of the Republican Party as cosponsor of AMNASTY

Grow up.
We're from Texas and Bush is no Texan.

josekuervo is correct
The main reason for Republican losses in 2006 was the mishandling of the war. As long as Bush is president it's likely to continue to be mishandled. I am perfectly happy with my represenatives giving a vote of "no confidence".

We need to redeploy the troops to bases out of harm's way in Iraq. If we continue on down the path of war-hawks with this stupid leader who can't bring himself to let our troops actually FIGHT and KILL Iraqis then we're heading toward an even bigger defeat in 2008.

two words
third party..........sigh

To hosekuervo
Most of the American people are NOT against this war. They became frustrated with an apparent stalemate and lack of a winning strategy. But George Bush has made what I think are the right moves in dispensing with General Casey's "light footprint" strategy and going with the gifted General Petraeus and the "clear and hold" strategy. My only concern is whether General Petraeus has enough troops to do the job. If he needs more to kick butt, then send them. Winning changes everything.

If you see victory happening, then you will see Americans expressing their support for the war.

WE WON...
so say the lefties of the country, but lefties have never been accused of being overly bright...or intelligent. I suppose its to be expected since the big picture, easily visible to normal folk, lies out beyond the tip of their nose and thus is invisible to them. It is true that there is and was much dissatisfaction with the fighting in Iraq to the tune of about 66% if the MSM polls are to be believed. To lefties that means or is taken to mean that a majority of the population has now accepted and joined with the cut'n'run, anti-American cowards of the country...not true of course. The polls simply showed that a large portion of the population were fed up with our troops not being allowed to fight the battle in Iraq to win. The leadership of the administration was too interested in 'winning the hearts and minds' and seemed oblivious to an obvious fact...that we first needed to defeat, then pacify the country. Anyway, to the degree that the fighting in Iraq had an effect, that effect was based on the way it was being waged with no visible attempt being made to actually win and bring the fighting to an end, rather than a desire to 'bring our troops home no matter what' idiocy we see the left and MSM hyping and trying to sell today.

I won't go over the list of other defects in the Republican party leadership that brought about their demise from leadership and majority status. I have commented on those in the past as have others here today and in the past. I have no doubt that everyone who can think knows those reasons. I must admit that appears to exclude and escape the attention of the party leadership though. Of course, the Republican party isn't known as the 'stupid' party for nothing.

To enforce the lies of the present, it is necessary to erase the truths of the past..The radio blogger

"Watch your thoughts, for they become words. Choose your words, for they become actions. Understand your actions, for they become habits. Study your habits, for they will become your character. Develop your character, for it becomes your destiny."

And what makes you think....
moving forward with the NEOCON plan of nation building is Conservative? What we are involved in now was planned way before 9-11. We are NOT going after the people that were involved in this atrocity. If we were doing that, I'd be all for it. But the fact is that we are not.

NEOCONS ARE NOT CONSERVATIVES. They are Troskyite, socialist re-treads.

Then, you might glance at this article, called, "Liberate Iraq" from the Weekly Standard. It was published on May 14, 2001. NEOCONS all...........

War...
The problems we are facing with the war are not due to Bush but rather the Marxists who are attempting to destroy us by implementing restrictions that Clinton & Reno never faced. The Marxists had no problem with Clinton getting involved in a war where he defended our enemies, nor did they have a problem with Reno murdering citizens of the USA - children, women & men (in Waco). Their main agenda is to ensure that those in office who best represent the constitutional republic of the USA are forced to fail so as to make the take over of our nation easier. With communists (Libs/ACLU) controlling our legal system, our constitutional republic will collapse within half a century.

The problem is the 'Pubbies 'leadership'
In my view, the fundamental problem is that the Republican Party has no leaders in Congress. Instead of our Senators and Congressmen and -women looking at polling numbers and running for cover, they should be out on the hustings, demonstrating leadership skills by consistently and vociferously supporting the war and conservative principles.

If the arguments are not made, and all people hear is the negative, antiwar message of the Democrats and mainstream media, of course support will drop. It's a vicious circle: support drops due to bad press, then the supporters of the war are demoralized, do not rebut the case, and support drops further.

I am deeply disappointed in President Bush's apparent inability or unwillingness to effectively communicate the case for the war, though I admire his tenacity in prosecuting the war.

I was firmly opposed to earlier conservative third party efforts, but I am beginning to think the Republicans should go the way of the American Whigs and be replaced by a party that is more explicitly focused on national security and economic liberty.

IRAQ resolution
They vote FOR THE WAR and AGAINST any negative amendment or they all must GO! Pull the funding on each who in reality is voting for defeat.

Conservatism Askew
Much of the conservative movement has lost its heads over what is fancifully tagged as the War on Terror. The War on Terror seems to be a replacement great cause to replace the war against communism, which has been happily won. It seems that a great many conservatives emotionally need a great Satan to battle and Islamic terrorism, however relatively impotent it is, has become the new dragon to slay.

Folks, we will never have small government if this country remains on permanent crusade to reform the world.

The GOP's problem...
... is much broader than the single issue of the war. Reagan was elected twice with the largest margins in recent history; the Contract with America swung Congress to the Repubs in 1994.

Since then, as the R party has become more and more simply Dem-Lite, their margins have consistently shrunk over every single election, until they lost last year.

They have totally lost sight of the principles that got them elected in the first place, and until they grasp that concept -- and they don't seem to get it at all -- they will continue to marginalize themselves.

They seem to have forgotten who brung them to the dance.

Leadership
The problem with the Republicans is the lack of leadership in the body politick.

The Fox News and AM Talk radio could adjust from mud-slinging to action leading.

Sean Hannity likes to state that the Democrats have no ideas. No plans. True enough. What platform did the Democrats run on in 2006?

Ask any American today what Nancy Pelosi did in her first 100 hours? You might get "raise minimum wage" but that would be about it.

What plans do the Democrats have today? Can anybody name one?

Which suggests that if the Republicans had a plan, and then acted upon it, they could easily beat Democrats in elections.

Ask any American today what Nancy Pelosi did in her first 100 hours? You'll get blank stares. Ask any American what Republicans did in the years 2000 - 2006. What legislation, what plan, what idea did they pass? Again, blank stares.

The reason for that is obvious. The Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity's of the Republican body politick could not, and have not talent for, shifting gears from being the underdog to the responsible adult.

Slamming liberals and liberal bashing is not a plan. Ann Coulter is not a leader. Hugh Hewitt, who has admitted many times that one of his favorite things to do is "skewer liberals", cannot sell an idea.

Hugh Hewitt can lead a negative campaign with 30,000 signatures blasting Republicans.

So there you have it. Republicans from 2000 - 2006 just sat on their hands trying to avoid the kinds of campaigns Hugh just lead blasting Republicans.

As someone once quipped, "it is far easier to die fighting for your beliefs than it is living them."

The Republican body politick is not able to transition from anti-liberal to pro-Republican. The the Republican years of 2000-2006 show it.

It is interesting that at the state level, Republicans did get their idea of marriage passed in legislation, defining a marriage to be between one man and one women.

Republicans have cursed themselves to only being underdogs. The curse is called hate. The Republicans have ideas but can't sell them by hating liberals.

Show me the equivalent of any Republican doing a sales job the way Al Gore has been running around the world and this country selling his ideas on global warming. Hollywood then made a movie out of it.

Ronald Reagan would never be able to rise up in the Republican ranks in today's environment because Reagan did not rely on liberal bashing. To Reagan we were all Americans and Reagan was able to garner a relationship with Reagan Democrats.

There is an old adage that politicians don't lead, they follow.

The years 2000-2006 certainly are a testiment to that. The citizens of the Republican body politick wanted their politicians to blast and lampoon liberals. Well, they certainly got that. There is no shortage of the Republican leaders stick it verbally to Democrats between 2000-2006.

Unfortunately, the Republican leaders didn't enact any of the ideas Sean Hannity talks about.

There is no "going negative" talk anymore because there is "only negative".

You can't lead by hating liberals. The politicians are going to give the AM Talk radio and Fox News crowd what they want, cheap talk bashing liberals.

Until the Republican body politick starts selling ideas and supporting conservative action then the "leaders" in Congress will only follow the will of the people, Republican body politick, and be all to happy to keep spinning hot air that makes them popular on liberal bashing shows in order to get re-elected.

Republicans have no underdog-to-winner transition plan. The years 2000-2006 are a testimony to that.

Tell me again libernut...
Why was it the Dems "won" in the last election? I see...the voters prefered the Democrat party's cut'n'run strategy. The one they deny as their agenda today but will become ever more visible in the near future.

Since I am a Viet Nam vet aren't there any lefties that want to "thank me for my service" and tell me how they "support our troops" but not the mission they've been ordered to do?

I can't speak for other vets on here but for me, when I hear those disingenuous platitudes it sets me teath on edge and fires my anger. When I was young I was taught that I owed a debt to our founders and the succeeding generations of uniformed citizens for the rights and freedoms I enjoyed and lived in, and that I had an obligation to future generations to protect and pass on those rights. And I did my duty.

Fast forward to today and we see the oxymoronic spectacle of the anti-war, anti-American left and other assorted libernuts proclaiming the obvious "this is America" and I 'have a right' for this or that, yet either hoping for or actively working for the defeat of our troops...the very ones who have and are protecting their 'right' to say or do this or that. If it weren't such a serious matter with accompanying dire consequences for our country should the nuts succeed to once again bring humiliation and defeat to our countrty and its warriors it would be laughable.

But I'M not laughing...my children and grandchildren are going to have to live in the world to come. I feel great sadness for them. The fighting today is between good and evil...it is for the very survival of civilization. If we cut'n'run today as the Democrat's, RINO'S and other cowards would have us do, unlike Nam, this enemy will follow us home. The fighting in Iraq is only a battle in a full scale world war with an evil entity that will not stop until either they are killed or we are. I prefer to kill them, and even though I'm near 67 years old, given the opportunity I'd take to the field to do exactly that. Let there be NO doubt...this war IS going to be fought whether we like it or not. We'd best get serious and start fighting it to win. Time is growing as short as lefties ability to give logical thought a run to the probable outcomes for this action versus that action, etc. Of course, its really not a secret even to leftties that libernuts can't think...they emote.Of course thats the problem and here we are.

Brian R
The thing I can't understand is how the 'Pubs can be so blind, deaf and dumb. They lost '06 but they are just not getting why they lost.
We have a political system that cares more about the "rights" of a dope smuggling illegal border crosser than the rights of men who were protecting our borders.
We have laws on the books that, if enforced, would start the 12 Million Man Exodus back South; yet the laws are ignored and the same old song and dance about rounding up and deporting 12 Million etc etc.
They were voted out for spending our tax dollars on anything and everything.
We have our troops in harm's way; yet neither party is willing to face the reality of the NECESSITY of the war against the Army of Islam and its 1 Billion soldiers.
The folks voted the 'Pubs out because of their refusal to face these problems. They voted them out because they were...acting like they are acting now...
They just don't get it.

Off course.
In fact the President and Karl Rove knew they would lose the house and the senate in Nov. , they see these cut and run Democrats as fall guys along with the Iraq leadership , both of which these unleaders will now attemt to blame and duck for cover behind.
In addition they see the Democrats as the only path to the "Am Nasty" they and the evil money cult lust for to cut wages, kill off unions and make the S.P.P. and the Trans Texas Corridor
the large stones that will sink American freedom and justice.
Real Danger is within, and its these above.
The liars of the media, traitors like Kerry
never being punished, and greed, plane old greed.
The root of all evil , money.

Republican leadership?
The Republican Caucus in the Congress has become a testosterone - free zone. While Democrats conduct politics like they are waging war, Republicans treat politics like another tennis match at the local country club. Democrats lie, cheat, steal and demagogue issues; Republicans roll over and wet on themselves.
The Republicans lost in 2006 because they have become big government, tax and spend liberals, abandoning the Contract with America and early goals to cut expenses, along with taxes. If they don't change, they will experience another 40 years in the desert, as they did between 1954 and 1994.

The permanent minority-chronic terrorism
The Republicans will remain the minority party for the next forseable future. Some of the correct reasons have been alluded to in other posts-loss of principles as to limited government etc.
What I would like to read is a post defining precisley what victory will be in Iraq. This President has failed to put forth that scenario and so have all you posters who say you want victory-including Hewitt. Kerry was close to the truth (for once) when he caled terriorism a chronic disease to be managed. Do not forget It took 700 years for the Irish and British to stop killing each other.

Derek Leaberry -- imaginary enemy?
Take a quick look at the terror attacks that have been launched in the name of Islam, just in the last 3 months, and then come back and tell us how imaginary an enemy they are.

http://www.thereligionofpeace.com/index.html#Attacks

Republican Wimps
We all sat amazed during the previous two years of Republican majority as they pissed their position down the drain. Why would we think they would change at this point? We must hold their feet to the fire! No more funds for the NRCC or its Senate equivalent. Save your money for individual candidates you can trust. They can ignore the masses of email they receive but they cannot overlook the money that does not come in.

Wolfman -- must not read much
I've seen the definition of victory perhaps a dozen times in the last 2 weeks. I've written it myself a couple of times. It's not hard, it's not hidden, and it's not unachievable. It's just, saying "What does victory look like?" is such a handy sound bite that liberals, who utterly lack the ability to hear answers to their objections, can't help but repeat it, regardless of how soundly it's been answered.

Victory in Iraq: a stable, liberal republic capable of defending itself from indigenous attempts to destabilize the nation and from attempts by neighbors to unseat them, that does not cooperate with international, anti-western Jihadi terrorists, and that reasonably protects the liberty and prosperity of the nation of Iraq.

Now, will you take that as an answer, and refrain from asking "What does victory look like? I've never heard anybody explain it..." I'm not holding my breath.

November Elections
Regarding the 6th year of an 8th year presidency- Prior to the elections, Hugh pooh-poohed the MSM for bringing it up and now gladly brings that up as one of the reasons for the GOP loss.

hewitt and republicans out of touch with
mainstream america.

americans voted decisively in november to get rid of congressional republican leadership because of their lack of oversight on the iraq war. if it had been a presidential year bush would have been removed from office because of incompentent leadership on the war in iraq.

if bush had prosecuted this war successfully we would not be having this conversation but at least 2/3 of americans have lost faith with bush and republican leaders.

but hewitt and his ilk continue to insult americans of all stripes by calling them names simply because they disagree with the war policy and intimate that they and only they really understand what is at stake.

how insulting and patronizing.

those of us who disagree are dumb or traitors.

yep, thats an attitude that will fly with the american people. NOT!

Answer to Mtn Rose
> Mountain Rose writes: How are these turncoats
> reelected?
> Do the Republicans in their districts
> know that they are a bunch of weenies?

The answer is they use the same tactic that the Mass GOP did for the past 16 years: fear. The arguement is simple, we may be 90% Democrat and you may hate our guts, but you darn well better support us because (a) 100% Democrat is worse and (b) we have the ability to blacklist you out of any political future if you don't support us.

Mitt Romney is a classic in this regard, he not only was better than the Dems but also better than Jane Swift (to the best of my knowledge the ONLY Governor never elected to that post since 1774.)

Romney's crash & burn will be reflective of what will happen to these "hold your nose" RINOs -- he had so split the party in '02 that when his appointed minions wanted to try to get a veto-sustaining minority in the legislature these folks were the same ones who had driven everyone else out of the party and none of the latter came back to help. Hence not a one got elected and the MassGOP lost even MORE seats.

The rank & file of the party had sorta said to Romney that as much as they detested his methods, if he was right - if he could get the 1/3 of either branch in the '06 elections then people would hold their noses and support him. Otherwise, the h*** with him...

And after the '06 election he started running for President. Massachusetts now has Deval Patrick and the MA Senate Republicans can caucus in a VW as there are only 5 of them left.

The important point: while you can hold your base for a while by threatening the parade of horribles that will occur should the base not support the RINOs, at a certain point the base will call you on it. As happened nationally in '06 when conservative Democrats beat RINOs or those who had offended their base by supporting RINOs.

The Abrahanoff problem is deeper than people realize -- he started (and subverted) the College Republican/Young Republican groups. Starting with Reagan, the GOP has been a clique of those-who-with-us-then that excludes outsiders. Now the problem with this is that coalitions have attrition, people die. And had the GOP spent the past 25 years bringing the young people into the party, we wouldn't HAVE a RINO problem as they would have been voted out in the primaries....

The GOP Should Not Take Part
In my opinion, the GOP should simply NOT take part in this debate and vote. There are only TWO position you can reasonably have on Iraq - 1. either do what it takes to win or else 2. cut spending and pull our troops out right now. This strategy by the dems to allow them to register their disapproval without taking any consequences is reprehensible.

So what should the repubs in the house do? Simply not take part in this sham. Let the dems have their day on the floor and skip the sessions and the vote - or vote to abstain. This would have 2 benefits.

1. It would have the effect of showing that this effort is a pure Democrat hot air session.

2. For repubs that want vote "cover", if all repubs don't vote or abstain, they'll have their cover.

Its been said that this is only the first step in the Dems strategy to split the Repubs and draw enough to their side. Once that's done, they can later pull the plug on spending. Well, this is akin to boiling the frog one little step at a time. The Repubs that go along with this are blind idiots.

The way to avoid this "incremental" approach is to push the issue right away. Insist in the media that a vote be taken to cut spending. This would put the Dems in a bind. They're simply not ready or brave enough to do it - but their base will kill them for avoiding it.

inkling
I never wrote that Islamic terrorism is imaginary. But it is a weak force in comparison to the military of the USSR- 4 million man army, 50,000 artillery pieces, 30,000 nuclear warheads, 30,000 tanks, 10,000 modern aircraft, 700 ships, and an elaborate spy and intelligence apparatus.

Islamic terrorism, as despicable as it is, is not capable of destroying American society. Only Americans seem to be able to do that and we're doing a pretty good job. For instance, today more American unborn babies will be butchered than Americans killed on Sept. 11, 2001 or have been killed in Iraq since our invasion nearly four years ago. Americans are a much more lethal force against the American people than any Muslim will ever be.

"What does victory look like?"
That question, is shamelessly being posed by members of the Democrat party who's leader just a few years ago was pondering the meaning of "IS"

Willie the impeached, (the only elected president to ever have been impeached) had a real puzzler on his hands with that one. Maybe if he had converted it to a four letter word like "ISIS" the meaning wouldn't have been such a secret to him or his groupies.

Anyway, when a two letter word throws a lefty, how can one possibly expect them understand a whole phrase, huh?

Most are against the war....Not!
In all of the people I've talked to, I've run into two that were against the war. They have a dial up modem connection, so do not use the internet for anything but emails from friends, and they do not have cable television, so they get their news from the major networks. As I explained to them the information I gleaned from the internet surfing I do, their position tempered. They still were against the war, just not as vehemently.

How is that when Bush was saying "stay the course", and "my generals tell me that more troops are not necessary", the entire democratic shrieking team was claiming a need for more troops. So Bush investigates and finds that the generals would be amenable to a surge of troops for a short time, and suggests this approach, only to now have the democratic shrieking team their is no need for more troops. Why is this flip flop not getting talked about?

Those citizens of this nation that recognize the position we now are in, also recognize the need for the conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan. They recognize the need for a permanent base of operations in the area for our military, just like Germany during the cold war. The polls provide the results of those willing to participate in the polls, how many of you have refused to participate when approached while out shopping? Or, when the phone rings, and its a pollster, tell them you're not interested and hang up? In addition, when you participate, how many are sure that your responses are recorded as you voiced them. Do they do a summary at the end to let you know they properly recorded your responses. What is to keep the pollster flunky from putting down the response he/she prefers for each of our responses? I tend to participate in internet polls, but not the others. Although I am no more certain that the internet polls are recording my responses properly, after all, you don't see the results until after you've responded. Also, I've not seen how those polls prevent any re-voting.

Sorry, got off topic. In summary, our military recognizes the importance of what they are doing, and our citizens are being fed a line of misinformation by the media and the Democratics. It wasn't the war that cost the Republicans the House and Senate, it was the failure of the candidates to properly demonstrate that they were fighting for the "right things". These right things being small government, low taxes, and appropriate boarder control.

That is what I think.

Chauvinism
Chauvinism is an integral part of being a fringe freak. Mr. Hewitt and his "we can win in Iraq" fellow travelers have whipped the faithful into a frenzy and they are ready to execute the cowards. Maybe you should. A larger democratic majority will be unassailable for several generations.

The wackos of this site who have hijacked the party of Barry Goldwater are about to be flushed down the toilet of history. Well, if not totally flushed at least you'll be reduced to the representation you numbers deserve. You are a fringe element of the GOP. And you will be represented as such, in a nation of 300,000,000.

Of which, the vast majority (remember "main stream") does not support the war or most of the rest of your extremist agenda.

We've been NEO-CONNED
Neo cons are trying to con us into believing, that big government is necessary to keep America terrorist free.

They also seem to keep using fear to get the minority to believe changing stratgies in Iraq, is retreating. Or opposition to the President and his plan is somehow embolding the enemy.

I would ask Hugh, are we suppose to stay in Iraq another 4 yrs if president plan fails again.
I would also ask Hugh what does winning this war
look like. Is it a stable unified Iraq that loves American values and Christianity? Is it when Iraqis decide not to war with one another?

Or perhaps its when 6000 troops are dead and 50,000 are injured.

See neo cons fail to realize that principles are there to guide. If neo cons followed conservative principles these last 6 yrs, we would have gotten better intelligence before we went into Iraq, and we would of had a well thought out plan for insurgency and now civil war.

Now our troops get to untangle the web the politicians have woven.

I would remind all out there that it was both parties that got us into this mess, and it looks like there is no end in near sight.
Remember that up to Nov. 08. Im pretty sure it will dominate the politics again as we ponder how to win the war then.

the definition of leadership
I read the very first post following Hewitt's article and my jaw dropped. Loyal Democrat wrote:

"The only thing I can figure is that Hugh has not kept up with the modern definition of the word "leader". It used to be that a leader was someone that went in a certain direction, and people that had been pursuaded to go in that direction were called "followers". Now, the correct definition of a leader is a person that senses where the people are going, and alters his course to go in that same direction."

Loyal Democrat must have been using the Bill Clinton political dictionary to define modern leadership. Yes, Clinton was an expert at choosing his own positions on issues based on polls. His cronies sent out trial balloons on EVERYTHING. He was popular among most Americans, but you can hardly call the man a leader. Leadership is offering guidance and pathing the way in advance REGARDLESS of popular opinion on the issue at hand. So many deserving people, Martin Luther King, Jr., for example, wouldn't even fit your definition of a modern leader. A leader must have courage to go against the grain and principles to sustain resolve- 2 qualities that you hardly ever see in the Democratic party or, here lately, the Republican party.

Look no further ...
... than than this idiotic republican response to this idiotic resolution for a living example of why the GOP did not win in 2006 and did not deserve to win in 2006.

What I find most troubling is the GOP's inability to reign in some of these resolution supporters because if it turns out our Congressional representatives have no backbone, we're goinng to need a presidential candidate with backbone. ULtimately, we'll end up with Guilliani because he'll act tough and make a decision- the conservatives will have to put abortion and gay marriage in trunk for a while so the GOP can recover.

Kimberly
Do you subscribe to any of the positions put forward by Thomas P. M. Barnett in his book "The Pentagon's New Map?" From what I understand from his book so far, your position on the war is not only wrong, it's downright dangerous.

One of the little people

Count me as one of those non-descript voters that are totally PO'd at the GOP leadership. Oops that is an oxymoron, sorry. IF we had any real leadership there would be a TV channel dedicated to the "USA Military". We all pay for PBS and yet it is one of the most left wing, one world stations on the air. I watch it for some of its good programs, but get sick at its "news" that is all full of BS and left wing ideas.

If GWB had any cajones he would put pressure on that station to air some of the really good things that are happening in Iraq and elsewhere that are happening. Schools opening, roads built, girls no being allowed to go to school, etc. The "USA Military" channel should be advertized on all other channels to let people know about it. The Discovery channel has some of this but it is not advertized nor put in the context that it should, it is generally a gee-whiz show.

Our "military complex" and that includes the defense contractors that build the weapons not just the soldiers haave designed and built weapons that this world has never seen before. These precision weapons can destroy a house/building and not the one next door, the most humane weapons ever used in this world in all of history. No longer do we wage war by lobbing buzz bombs into the London area or carpet bomb Berlin, we target as best we can the bad guys - period. Sure sometimes our intelligence is flawed, but at least we are trying. And that is not white flag waving.

Ed

Only Republicans know what patriotism is
I am continually surprised at how Republicans seems to have self 'cornered' patriotism. If you don't support Bush then you want the USA to lose. My questions remains What if Bush is wrong? Is it patriotic to blindly support the wrong policy? To question the policy that 'may be' wrong is unpatriotic? I am sick and tired of these 'vets' who come out and blast anyone who doesn't blindly support Bush. They now EXPECT to be thanked and then turn and insult you if you don't buy thier brand of patriotism. Anyone who has layed thier life on the line for the USA deserves our heart felt gratitude. In the same breath don't tell me that I am unpatriotic for not agreeing with you.

Kimberly
The dems smartest senator once said, you are entitled to your opinion but not to your own set of facts.

Democrat Avenger...Kimberly
I defy either one of to show me where I said anything remotely like, as Kimberly indicates" I take issue with your brand of patriotism and service to our country being exclusive of all who don't agree with the president's war in Iraq."...Show me Kimberly where I indicated 'support' for Bush or his conduct of the war..on the contrary, I do the opposite...I think he's handled it badly...but unlike many on here, that doesn't put me with the cut'n'run cowardsw od the country, nor does it put the majority of the population who disagree with the conduct of the war on the side of the anti war anti American kooks. As to Democrat avenger, I don't know anyone who claims "Republicans seems to have self 'cornered' patriotism."..certainly no conservative says that...but ones actions and pronouncements self identify those who whe ARE un patriotic....as the saying goes, if the shoe fits etc etc.

we need a Congress of Reagans not Nixons
Our country is in far greater danger now than it ever was during the Cold War, and it seems we have run out of leaders. All we have left are sinister, nihilistic politicians who are little better than V Putin.

Welcome To The Club Hugh
Now you know how it tastes when Republicans ignore the base on a key issue. You are still however rooting for an illegal alien amnesty program last I checked. How is that different from this situation re: the NRCC? Many in the party refuse to give to the NRCC because of the party elite's stance on illegal immigraton. As passionate as you are for this war, is how pasionate as many or more in our party are about illegal immigration. Welcome to the "not giving a dime to the NRCC Club".

Congressional Leadership
I'm no politician, but it seems to me that an approach one could take in forming a stance on the war (especially as a Congressman) would be to talk to one's constituency that has "skin in the game," i.e., talk to the servicemen and women and their parents. Ask them what they'd like to see in terms of support for the troops (with a view to getting them home as soon as possible - and an understanding of how they define victory). THEN, make that your platform. If others take their potshots, tell them that their opinion is appreciated, but you are prioritizing your stance based on those who are actually sacrificing with regard to this issue. It may not silence the snipers, but it seems to be a well-placed "high ground" from which to defend your position.

To me, THAT would be leadership.

Republican Leadership "Lack of"
AMEN!! WE ALL NEED TO REMEMBER TO DO RIGHT.
GETTING ALONG WITH THE DEMOCRATS, NOT FORCING DEBATE ABOUT THE WAR IS, TO ME, DISHONORABLE!!

ah you think it disobedience is patriotism. By the way I am not anti-war I am anti-incompetence

Don't politize the military
The non-binding resolution to be voted on by Democrats and some Republicans is a very serious mistake, both for America and the Democrats. It runs the risk of permanently politicizing the US armed forces as never before and setting up the stage for a military coup some time in the future. This resolution could create a generation of veterans and their families who see the Democratic Party as the party that stabbed them in the back. As America becomes more and more like a Latin–American country, with more and more Latin Americans in our armed forces, some of whom joined to speed-up their citizenship applications, they bring Latin American sensibilities into play. Imagine 20 years from now that the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces is a Latin American who earned her citizenship by serving in Iraq or Afghanistan. She sees the country being drawn into a Democratic Party/leftist lead chaos and believes that the military has a duty to preserve the Republic. What do you think might happen? Could there be a dirty war, and a purge of our Universities and Colleges? Maybe, I hope not. It could happen.

Hal Donahue
"ah you think it disobedience is patriotism"

Is that what I said??

" By the way I am not anti-war I am anti-incompetence"

So, giving due credence to that statement...how do you feel about the fighting in Iraq? Do you feel we are threatened by Terrorism? Should we bring our troops home, or to use the talking point "re-deploy" them?...If we leave Iraq what have done...win? Lose? cut'n'run? What will be the most likely result of our pulling out domestically? Internationally? Will terrorism cease? Will we be safe from it?

I agree the war has been run incometely till now. What should we do about it?...tell me about the patriotism of the anti-incometents. I happen to be one myself...I need to know what it is I stand for as you see it.

Derek Leaberry
"Islamic terrorism is...a weak force in comparison to the military of the USSR [and] is not capable of destroying American society."

With all due respect Derek, that's a highly naive outlook. It's precisely because Islamic terrorists do not drive tanks and warships or launch warheads, or employ an army of 4 million that they are indeed so dangerous. The element of surprise, as wrote Sun-Tzu, is the single greatest advantage any warrior can have. When radar doesn't pick up enemy aircraft or missiles, and when your enemy's uniforms consist of civilian attire, it only takes 19 men to completely disrupt a society's way of life and kill over 3,000 people.

Our military is the most lethal killing force ever assembled - I'll concede that. But you must understand that our military was designed to fight state-sponsored armies, not non-governmental entities like terrorists and insurgents (and yes, there is a difference). Rumsfeld began the transformation of the military to one that is more nimble and able to adapt to insurgency and "small wars" when he took over as SecDef, and the fact completely remaking one of the strongest organizational cultures in the world today took too long led directly to his ouster.

Yes, our military is supremely admirable and I thank each member personally every time I am introduced to one. But our military was not designed to solve every little skirmish all over the world, and that's the fault of a lot of high-ranking pig-heads who were too entrenched in "we've always done it this way" kind of thinking refusing to think outside the proverbial box. If you compare the progress made in the last 5 years of transforming the military culture to any Fortune 500 company which has completely redesigned its corporate culture, the military wins in nearly all respects. But it will take longer than 5 years for our forces to master the skills, tactics, and doctrine in order to become as deft at handling insurgency and small wars as it is at handling large wars.

Derek (and anyone who thinks like Derek), please, please read Imperial Grunts by Robert Kaplan and also Learning to Eat Soup with a Knife by John Nagl. These two books, more than any others that I've read, will open your eyes to a whole new way of looking at - and appreciating - the enormous tasks with which we entrust our armed forces.

ziggy
1. Return the troops to Afghanistan and work the Pakistan border concentrating on Osama and Taliban. Keep Bush's promise of a marshall plan
2. Withdraw most US forces from Iraq except enough to keep iran at bay. Let the civil wars go on. Bloodshed and slaughter? yes lots but that was preordained when we failed to secure the country after the invasion.
3. More operations like the past one in Somolia. Hunt them down and kill them as we have been doing since Tripoli
4. Iraq is seen as a failure now we have lost prestige, allies are gone. Terrorism is a threat but withdrawing from Iraq will remove a recruiting tool and a training aid. We gave up the Phillipines in WWII because it wasn't worth the cost and resources and most especially the risk. Lte's reconsolidate our forces an attack terrorists not their Iraqi surrogates and terrorist trainees

Islam and Power
Islam's military achievements are few in modern days. On Sept. 11 they took advantage of lax airline security and killed 3000 Americans. That method will likely never succeed again. They used bombs to blow up 200 in Spain and 70 in Britain. Although that method will almost certainly succeed again, life goes on in Spain and Britain. Tiny and surrounded Israel has pounded every Arab army it has faced and her major opponents- Egypt, Jordan and Syria (albeit grudgingly) have come to terms with the existance of Israel. The United States army has destroyed the army of Iraq twice in twelve years quite handily.

Islam will only succeed by outbreeding the nations of the West, especially those who are stupid enough to allow Islamics to settle in their nations, and not by military means. The lands of Islam are vital to us for its oil, nothing more. Therefore, I suggest that Islam should be quarantined to its region of the globe and the people of Islam who live in the West should be resettled in their orignial homelands. Intercourse between the West and Islam should be kept at a minimum.

Derek (again)
"Islam's military achievements are few in modern days." You've got to be kidding me. 2001 and later don't qualify as "modern days"? No wonder I was disappointed when Tito Jackson's rise to greatness wasn't covered in Paul Johnson's book of the same title.

Kidding aside, that's more naive than your first post. IED's that have specially engineered bits of copper alloys that melt at extremely specific high temperatures and re-form themselves in mid-air into an armor-piercing shape is not a significant military achievement?

"[L]ife goes on in Spain and Britain." Well, for all those who didn't die in the bomb blasts, yes - and thankfully, that was indeed the vast, vast majority of inhabitants. And life goes on in the U.S., too, although our quality of life gets eroded with every 'incident' whereupon would-be terrorists devise a new tactic. Bit by bit, unnoticeable at times, but happening nonetheless. Today, it's my cigar lighter being banned from the airlines; tomorrow, it's my Ice Blue Aqua Velva; pretty soon, only nudists will be flying the friendly skies, and considering the size of a lot of air-travelers these days, that's not quite as appealing as it might sound.

"Islam will only succeed by outbreeding the nations of the West, especially those who are stupid enough to allow Islamics to settle in their nations, and not by military means." Then America Alone by Mark Steyn needs to be added to your reading list, because that is already happening in just about every nation in Europe, and the U.S. is hovering at a birthrate that's approximately 2/3 of an eyelash above replacement rate. And the last time I checked, Europe was about the only locale of any semi-reliable (and I'm using that adjective very loosely) military ally that we've got left.

And the kicker: "I suggest that Islam should be quarantined to its region of the globe and the people of Islam who live in the West should be resettled in their orignial homelands. Intercourse between the West and Islam should be kept at a minimum." Well, perhaps my previous offerings to you were in vain; that kind of rhetoric doesn't solve anything, and does nothing but polarize peoples' perspectives and stifle debate. But hey, I harbor no hard feelings - perhaps the next time you and Cosmo Kramer are hanging out at a bigot convention, you can get his autograph for me?

Lte's reconsolidate our forces an attack
"Lte's reconsolidate our forces an attack terrorists not their Iraqi surrogates and terrorist trainees"

Interesting...so,WHO and WHERE ARE these terrorists you figure we should attack? What do we then do about the "Iraqi surrogates and terrorist trainees" hmmmmm? Will they just go away ya think?

"Return the troops to Afghanistan and work the Pakistan border concentrating on Osama and Taliban."

If we capture (if he's even still alive) or kill Osama what have we done? Will terrorism stop? Are/were the Taliban the only terrorists that theaten us? Kill them and we've won..is that how you see it?

For what its worth I do agree that we "we failed to secure the country after the invasion." But that was then...this is now...we need to deal with today's world.

"Hunt them down and kill them as we have been doing since Tripoli"

If that became the batlle plan would you support it? Would the Democrat party? Maybe this "surge" is the beginning of exactly that...does it deserve time to develope and have an effect? Will the Democrat party allow it the time? If not, are they right or wrong?

"Iraq is seen as a failure now we have lost prestige, allies are gone. Terrorism is a threat"

What elements go into a nation loseing prestige? Does battle field victories provide it prestige? If so, how to explain the Viet Nam war where our forces were both dominate and victorious on the battle field, yet lefty Democrats said the same back then. Does media blather have an effect, and if so what type coverage would prove positive for our presitge? Do domestic anti-war protesters help or hurt our prestige? Do they help or hurt our troops moral?

I could go one with much more but it is tiresome. Your post told me what I needed to know about who and what you are.

Gutless Republicans
The Republicans have failed to fight for anything over the past four years. I would disagree that the House "leadership" (a true oxymoron) is conservative. They are a group of good old boys who have occasionally supported conservative causes when it suited them.Look at their record on spending, smaller government and support of the war. Their failure to whip the minority in line for this non binding vote is just one example of their gutless lack of leadership. They will continue to be steamrolled by the liberal democrat majority if they do not stand up and fight. The Republican party and especially the President have totally lost touch with the base and I feel they will be bound to wander in the wildernes for the next 40 years unless they have an epiphany. A pox on all their houses.

Sacrifice is four-letter word
Hugh's column ended with the paragraph, "In short, I expect - and apparently so do thousands of others - the Republicans on the hill to act as though they are willing to sacrifice something - including perceived political advantage - to win the war."

I am a former democrat who voted for Reagan and eventually became a Republican. I am STILL looking for a statesman with the humility and wisdom of Washington, the brilliance of Jefferson, and the honest openness of Lincoln. A statesman, not a politician!!!!

When the RNC called two days ago to ask me for my money to help Senate republicans, I told her until they stood alongside their soldiers and desired victory above their own position in the senate they would never ever see a penny of my money. None has disappointed me more than my own Gordon Smith of Oregon who started out with the "right stuff" and somewhere along the way became a true politician full of the "wrong fluff".

Amen to Hugh.

Pray for Peace - Fight Like Hell
I second the thoughts of tunneler and Howee for thier reasoning about the losses in 2006.

For you anti-war, cut-n-runners the best advice I have to offer is Pray for Peace and hope that the rest of us have the courage to fight like hell to maintain a place where you have the "right to dissent".

Papasnake37

Republican reps. cut and run
Sick 'em Hugh! These Republicans not supporting the surge are weenies. The Democrats are acting like their representing the people, what's up with that? Don't they believe in Halliburton, in billions of wasted and stolen taxpayer funds? Al-Qaeda is using the surge as a recruitment tool to backup their occupation theory, but those not supporting Bush are trying to harm their recruitment drive. What about all the profits generated for the defense contractors like Blackwater? The investors in China profit from the increase in deficit spending, these are REPUBLICAN FRIENDS. How about the makers of artificial limbs and eyes, providing jobs lost to the Bush trade policies. Now we're getting thousands of Iraqui aliens, to add to the large number of illegals supported by Bush, former Reagan aide Larry Kudlow, top conservatives like Grover Norquist and big businesses. Step up the pressure on these losers Hugh, and don't forget those cut and run Senators like Norm Coleman. Find someone to challenge them in the '08 primaries. They're going to lose in November, so why give them a chance?

Kimberly...........
Happy to respond...but lets do it right...to quote you from your post made Thursday, February, 15, 2007 12:06 PM.."Specifically, as in the case of ziggy, I take issue with your brand of patriotism and service to our country being exclusive of all who don't agree with the president's war in Iraq" May I point that out that in your current post you refer to.."So my question is this: how is this not to be construed as a post about your idea of honoring this country or 'patriotism' vs. those of us who beg to differ with the reasons (lies) presented for going to war?"

Are those two sentiments interchangeable to you? If not Which one do you hold (don't agree with the president's war in Iraq)or(those of us who beg to differ with the reasons (lies) presented for going to war)... I did not any part of my post address the reasons we went to war, be they lies as you and most left wing loonies are programmed to say...or legitimate reasons which libernuts refuse to acknowledge exist.

But, lets get down to cases here. I don't claim my "brand" of patriotism is exclusive to me, but patriotism is an exclusive attribute...one either has it or doesn't....those with patriotism know they have it...those without it many times rationalize to pose as having it.(I support the troops, blah blah blah) Of course the only ones they fool is themselves and others of like mind. Actually I don't even think they fool themselves, but I feel generous tonite.

Finally, supporting the troops and thanking those who have served is a nice thing to do when its genuine. An insult when its meant to cover ones real feelings...as is the case so much of the time these days. Its ones actions, not their words that tell. In truth, speaking for myself, I don't want your thanks in words...I prefer you and others start honoring and respecting our country and start making payments to our founders who won our/your rights and freedoms on the battle field, pledging their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor. Every citizen of this country owes them and the members of the military that followed them through the decades a debt and its time everyone, including lefties made payment to them, and took up the responsibility of protecting and passing on those rights and freedoms to coming generations so they also may enjoy that which through the years have allowed for the malcontents of our society to run their mouth un-impeded.

To ziggy
Keep fighting. You're right. There are those of us who appreciate your comments. My older son is a US Army First Lieutenant serving in Iraq. You don't support him if you seek to undermine the mission in which he is engaged.

decorate Baghdad with flesh!!
Representative _________,

I'm contacting you to urge passage of a defeatist resolution that encourages al Qaeda and Iran to continue fighting in Iraq. American troops need to become losers, American troops shouldn't receive reinforcements, American troops need to be beaten in Iraq. Al Qaeda and the radical Islamic state of Iran should be allowed to take over Iraq. I want to thank you in advance for supporting defeat for the U.S. in Iraq.

Don't give U.S. troops a chance to quell the violence in Baghdad! Baghdad needs to be bespattered daily with Iraqi blood-- let the streets flow with blood!! Let the buildings be ornamented hourly and in increasing quantities with Iraqi flesh!! Let Iran and al Qaeda have Iraq!

Passage of a House resolution encouraging defeat in Iraq will aid Republican Congressmen's campaign coffers and 2008 election prospects. The Republican activist base is watching what Republican Congressmen do. And I have a long memory. I will remember if you end up supporting decorating Baghdad with body parts and skin and blood. I will remember how you handle pro-defeat resolutions, and inform my friends and family in October and November 2008.

Regards,

Ziggy
Well Ziggy all this bluster is a cover and you are just a party idealogue? The has been Rick Santorum said I am asking you not to put on a uniform but to put on a bumper sticker that is exactly what it sounds like you support. Yes since Tripoli and yes Democrats and Republicans both. Will the Dems support hunting and killing terrorist? Hell yes they always have as have most Republicans. Jimmy Carter was terrible but this Bush is an idiot and is destroying our military and aiding the enemy. Your post told me what I needed to know about who and what you are -- a non-thinking man hiding behind a cloak of patriotism. And don't give me that veteran BS I am one too.

Hal Donahue writes:
"And don't give me that veteran BS I am one too."

May I point out a couple three things...being a vet doesn't make one a patriot...cleaned up for public consumption, there are foul ups in the services also, as every vet knows.

Second,in this day of cowards and cowardly there exists a thing called vet envy. If the military ever had as many men in the services as claim to have been in the military we'd never have needed the draft.

Finally, may I mention a highly respected, highly decorated American general who many believed should have lead our troops as commander...his name is/was Benedict Arnold....He also was A vet.

The point is, its not ones words but their actions that determine who or what they are...do ones patriotic duty and one is a patriot...disrespect our country and its troops and one is not a patriot...proclaiming "I support the troops" is blather and meaningless without the words, deeds and respect to back it up.

As to thinking or not being able to, I posed simple, logical questions to you. I saw no answers...You did make what appeared to be an attempt to answer some I guess, but it must have been lefty mantra because the obvious follow up questions went over your head. If one holds a thoughtful position, one should be able to defend that position i would think...if its your own...of course if its not, well, it gets deep fast.

Gee Ziggy I am sorry
With all the bombast your question seems to have been lost. And if it is about actions no one can support a president that is struggling mightly to stay in Iraq until he can get out of office and no other reason or he would have taken drastic action based on his "beliefs" like mobilise the country and the economy. As for your: "Second,in this day of cowards and cowardly there exists a thing called vet envy. If the military ever had as many men in the services as claim to have been in the military we'd never have needed the draft." are you one of these? Those "vets" tend to be extreme like you.

Ziggy
Please have a good evening. I suspect I will tun across you again.

whoops make that run

Lack of Republican leadership?
On the way down this thread I see many agree we just don't have any strong Republican leadership.
Unfortunately the Democrats are in worse shape than we are and I don't see light at the end of the tunnel for either.
On a lighter vane;
Two of the posters here openly advocate a military coup.
Proper response for that would be for the Senate to call up the Irregular Militia.
That would likely have Irregulars rolling on the floor laughing!

Why Should They Waste Their Time Hugh?
Simply vote against it. Thats really all they can do. There is no leadership from the White House. The base has abandoned them thanks to the fact that Pres. Bush and Rove have opposed them (the base) on so many issues. The base has really gotten tired of getting poked in the eye by the GOP hierarchy. Especially after having hefted "W's" behind over the top in 2000/04 only to have him ignore, insult and turn on them.
Those influencing and steering the GOP (outside of the house/senate) are on a "Lisa Nowak" self-destruction course.

I'd say to the House leadership: just vote against the "non-binding resolution" and then go play a round of golf if the course is not covered w/snow. If it is then stay inside and polish off a bottle of Remy-Martin. DD

Throw the weenies out!
If they are not going to support the war, what are they doing still in office?

If they don't get with the program, I say we work to boot them out!

Defining Victory ? A sad reply
I am more conservative than most on this site. A true conservative does not send the army overseas without considering the downside if everything goes wrong. Which it has poltically and militarily. The reply to my post was :

Victory in Iraq: a stable, liberal republic capable of defending itself from indigenous attempts to destabilize the nation and from attempts by neighbors to unseat them, that does not cooperate with international, anti-western Jihadi terrorists, and that reasonably protects the liberty and prosperity of the nation of Iraq.

This person is in dreamland. The problem is the peoples of the middle east are still wedding to groupthink and tribalism. They have not individuated and therefore think tribe before country. Dictators are able to hold the peace and retain by power by brute force something the US and its pseudo-Iragi government will never do.

You be the judge...
Hal Donahue writes:"as for your: "Second,in this day of cowards and cowardly there exists a thing called vet envy. Well? What do ya think? Am I or am I not?

Anyway I'm not new on here but don't post often anymore, and yes, I do suspect you will run across me again.Till then, take care and enjoy.

Baghdad Must Be Quelled
Bush's best move in this entire debacle was naming Petraeus to lead the fight. I actually have confidence he can turn things around in Baghdad, but what it means is almost a permanent partition of the city.

So what?

Bush would serve the entire region better if he allowed serious talk of partiton of the entire country. That is the best direction for long term stability in the region, which equates to victory.

Even God helps those who Help Themselves
I have wondered for years now if many of those Jellyfish Republicans might not be partaking of certain pharmacuticals made by their loyal Drug Co. supporters, such as Prozac, xanax, Lunesta, etc... all legal, of course. I have searched for an excuse for the PASSIVITY that seems to plague a considerable number of Repubs.... Maybe their testosterone levels aren't up to par? On the other hand, I can name a number of Old Gals from the Dim-Hugo Chavez Party who seem to own stock in testosterone. (I say that as a woman.. apparently some females use it)
I'm considering getting more involved through Hugh & NZ's Victory Caucus to encourage those poor gop guys, but I have become so turned off by the majority of them that I am not sure I want to waste my time... like Bush, they shamelessly tuned out their base for some time.
As far as I am concerned, the Nov "wake-up call" seems to have stunned many of the remaining Republicrats into a permanent paralysis. Too many of them still don't even seem to get the "why", even though we tried to warn them of what was coming... Maybe they need to be reminded by their "leadership"? that they Still can Not have it both ways... and that they Don't have a duty to get re-elected; they have a duty to uphold the laws of this land and what is best for the legal citizens of the US of A. Sometimes that Does mean opposing El Presidente Bush..like on Immigration/border issues, and bringing in, God only knows, how many More Muslim Refugees! etc...
In my opinion concerning "tin-ear" Jorge, his new policy (finally) for "Winning" in Iraq and dealing with Iran is about the Only area where I am with him at this point. Still, I Totally Support Our Troops and Their Mission!!

Ryan
By your last comment, I have deduced that you are a liberal.

Derek
No, moron, I simply don't judge people by their race or religion - I prefer to let their values and morals steer my opinions of them. If you think that the world should live in racial and religious segregation, you're the very definition of a bigot, and I cringe that you are implying that you're a good conservative.

A NOTE FROM "WE THE PEOPLE"
YOUR TIME IS UP SENATE/CONGRESS

A GOP congressman walks into a bar...
...with his jellyfish repub friend and says,"I say old boy! Escargot me would you ?"

The bartender says,"Beat it pal."

GOPster,"Patte de Foie Gras ?"

Bartender,"We don't soive anything without a spine here."

GOPster,"Oh,don't worry,my friend here shant be embibing with me."

Bartender,"I was talkin' about yer public persona you tonedeaf freakin' COWARD !"

GOPster,"I think I just heard 'Lovey' calling, come along Keller!...Just look now, you've done it again! When will I learn to leave you at home !?!"

Bartender, now mumbling to himself,"Freakin' blind leadin' da deaf, dumb, blind and cowardly...sheesh..."

Dear loyal Democrat
If public opinion has shifted away from "anti jihadists efforts, so our elected officials must do the same."

Why not just dismantle our armed forces?

Because public opinion shifted in this country [I don't agree] do you believe the jihadists have shifted from their idea of killing us?

How was public opinion on September 10, 2001?

Keep dreaming.

Neo cons cut and run to globalism
The Neo cons (new conservatives) or liberal conservatives in the Repub Party are not about Conservatism at all. They are about big brother government and globalization.

They made government bigger, they borrow from foreign nations and limit liberty for a false security. They nation build in Iraq and Afghanistan. They've wasted millions in those nation building attempts.

They keep open the borders. Good jobs are going overseas. No fair tax reform, more entitlements.
Use fear to retain power. Call their own party members names.

Yeah if we can just get the globalist out of the party by 08, maybe we can return to our forefathers ideas of liberty and Constitutional Rule of Law.

Get rid of the NeoCon Globalist in the Party.
The fiscal, social, and Constitutional conservatives can do without them and still win in 08.

Ryan
You're a punk.

Neocon cabal
The sooner the Repbulican party stops representing Hewitt and the neocon cabal, the sooner it can back on track and start winning elections.

I becoming concerned that is already too late to win in 2008.
