Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Are New Yorkers embarrassed by their media titans?

Bill Keller goes on Face the Nation and pleads for Americans to understand that the press "is not neutral" in the war.

Ace reporter Eric Lichtblau is reduced to a bad Jon Lovitz routine: "The story couldn't have helped the terrorists! They already knew everything! Yeah, that's the ticket! Everything! Yeah, Dick Clarke told me that. Everybody knows that."

Then New Yorker editor David Remnick runs a Talk of the Town that summons up Nixon to haunt all of our dreams, "Nattering Nabobs." Nixon's campaign against the good guys in the press had taken "fearsome legal shape" in the summer of 1971 when the government actually sought a prior restraint.

Fearsome, that. A lawsuit.

But the press had prevailed, then, though narrowly. And it had not seen "Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, and others in the Nixon-Agnew-Ford orbit [leave] Washington believing that the imperial Presidency had been disastrously hobbled by a now imperial press."

But Dick Cheney snuck back in --first as a Congressman, then as a Secretary of Defense, and then twice elected as Veep, and he had sinister plans, and "an ideological noise machine," backed up by a "coordinated offensive" from Bush and Cheney, who "described the Times report as a disgrace and, outrageously, as a boon to further terror attacks."

As though Bush and Cheney don't know that the terrorists knew everything already, except for that amateur Hambali, who you have to admit, got nabbed by the Swift program all the terrorists knew about. Oh, and that other guy, and the others. Well, every other terrorist except those mentioned in the June 23 story knew about it. Outrageous! Yeah, that's the ticket. Outrageous. And Nixon. And the Pentagon papers.

Now Remnick sighs, the "press --particularly the mainstream outlets the White House find most irritating-- is in a collective state of anxious transition, hurt by scandals (Congressman King was quick to mention Jayson Blair, the Times serial fabulist), by the appearance of a blizzard of new technologies and alternatives like Fox News, and by a general sense of economic, even existential, worry."

And Remnick explains it all for his fellow Manhattan readers: "In the wake of of the Administration's record of dishonesty and incompetence in Iraq and the consequent decline in the President's domestic polling numbers, it is not hard to discern why the White House might find a convenient enemy in the editors of the Times: this is an election year."

The editor of the New Yorker closes with a warning to all MSMers assembled to gird up their loins. "You have to wonder," he broods, whether he Bush White House, "in its urgent need to find scapegoats for the myriad disasters it has inflicted, is preparing to repeat a dismal and dismaying episode of the Nixon years."

We should not be surprised by the quiver in the column, as Remnick tells us that the days of the "supremely confident Bradlees and Rosenthals" are gone. And perhaps he's just rushed to get out an assist to his beleaguered pals whose subscription bleeding is said to be as intesne as the lopsided verdict against the papers for their recklessness. Short deadlines don't allow for careful prose and lousy historical comparisons are one product. (Didn't anyone at the magazine point out that no prior restraint had been sought in this instance? Which renders the comparison with the Pentagon papers less than compelling.)

Most telling though is the comparison between Keller/Remnick and the character of Runway editor Miranda Priestly, played by Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada. Now there's a New Yorker who might rally some to her flag. Priestly's supreme confidence in her judgment was expressed in hauteur, nit paranoia. The former could intimidate, but the latter only amuses.

But please, invoking Nixon dead these dozen years, or Vietnam era court actions? Retreating from the significance of the story or its consequence? Ignoring the claims made by the story itself and instead pretending as though the Administration was not sincere in its anger while ignoring the overwhelming rejection by the public of the arguments advanced by the Times men?

A confident press deals forthrightly with its critics, defends its decisions in open forums, debates and does not denigrate its opponents.

But as Mr. Remnick admits -- and not just expressly-- the era of that press is long gone. At least among the formerly great press institutions of Manhattan.

its just mind boggling
Does anyone find it ironic that the people who wanted to expose Coca Cola's secrets are already in jail, but those who would expose our potential safety with a perfectly legal anti terrorist operation are not. Maybe Coke is more important than national security. O yes, there MIGHT be an investigation. What is wrong with this picture.

What the NYT did...
...by ignoring calm well-informed pleas from our nation's political leaders--to voluntarily hold back information--took away their authority. The MSM is more than happy to leave them (the Bush Administration) with ALL responsibility for fighting terrorism, but at the same time they take away their authority--by ignoring well-considered pleas for restraint in revealing our vital national secrets.

Offer our political leaders great responsibility, without the necessary authority, and then we'll see what kind of leaders we end up with. If this pattern (of media sabotage) becomes the American norm, then the future political leaders that we attract will be the wimps, the empty suits. And people who want to wield power will become news editors, I guess.

Were I a New Yorker
I'd be trying to make sure myself and family were outside the blast radius of a patriot willing to take Ann Coulter's idea to fruition.

Sooner or later Americans are going to fight back against the enemy within and it won't be pretty. Arm your words well, NYT, we have more serious means.

Bill Keller and NYT et al can parse words however they wish. The fact remains that the liberal media in general hates George Bush more than they love America. Any and every thing they can do to undermine anything initiated by the President, they will do, no matter the risk to the rest of the country. The NYT could care less about "the people's right to know". All the empty talk of "freedom of the press" is just that. The irony is of course that while enabling terrorists to more easily plan their attacks, the NYT office by virtue of it's location, is right in the line of fire.

jmag is quite correct. If these disclosures by NYT are as disgraceful and damaging as we are told, why do we hear and see absolutely nothing about a grand jury investigation into the identity of the leakers? Why haven't Lichtblau, Risen, Keller, et al, already been subpoenaed to testify?

All of the fine commentary doesn't seem to be motivating DOJ to prosecute the leakers. Silly me: I thought it was a serious offense to reveal classfied information. It appears to be no big deal after all.

If DOJ is not going to find and prosecute the leakers, then let's stop whining about NYT. If these loose lips aren't important to our law enforcement agencies, why should I care?

Media Balance

Everybody in the media is too busy looking for the chance to be Bob Woodward. They would be better to remember that they are Americans first, last and always. The press, the schools, the politicians are all too busy trying to be good little citizens of the world, and forgetting that much of the world would gladly cut our throats for the chance at what we have. In fact, many would be just too glad to cut our throats for free. the dayafter 911, the network news anchors were told to remove the flag pins from their lapels, and the flag was banished from the set - all to look "impartial." If being American and proud of it is somehow impartial, then so be it. Every time I see some talking head prattling on about how terrible the U.S.A is, it makes me sick. Anyone giving the enemy information, or spouting off politically correct garbage, or giving Al Jazeera ammunition to spew more of their hatred and venom needs his head examined. We are comitting national suicide by continuing this crap, and the media is greasing the skids all the way.

Really Hugh
dear hugh, I have been a listener, rarely a reader, of yours, since you first came on the news in L.A. and the radio. I understand that you have become polarized in your religious views, actually being one of the first secular radio talk show hosts to couple their morals with their politics. Which is only natural as the far left started to try to get their politics to take the place of religion in general, etc.. But, do you really FEAR that the NY and LA times can and/or have put the security of this country's government in jeopardy? If the present or any future or past Administration cannot keep its secrets, then how did this country get to be the present reigning world power thsat it is? Surely God helps those who help themselves (i'll bet you believe that, I could be wrong, I don't believe it) But I am more certain that this and every previous government has kept its secrets Secure (afterall, who did assinate JFK, RFK, MLK, and Malcolm X?). The person(s) who are responsible for those heinous crimes are either still in power (as in office) or still have power (as in advise). The real power in this government could not be and never was held between the ears of its rank and file citizenry. I know you could not publicly aknowledge this on air or in print, as you would have little grounds as a god-fearing man to continue this Revere-like life's work of trying to make sense of the cacophonic din of the media clarions/claxon on Left and Right. Ann Coulter is the only spokesperson of any notability to me, as after listening to her, for whatever it is worth, (as what the heck am I supposed to do about it?) I can still peruse the beauty of her physique, and come away with a happy positive feeling about it all. To think, such a lovely creature, and so darn brilliant! But what of the rest? Pah! They are not Informative. The mere fact that they spend so much time trying to Convince the public and Evince their written proofs, shows me that they still think or else want me to, that there is hope in hell, if i were to just Vote as they would persuade. I have not voted since the bush perot race, and never will again. That is my statement. That is my comment. That is my exercise of my rights. That is my opinion of this farce. That is what it amounts to. This Hill of Beans! Where are the Bean counters? Where are the Science Rocketists, when you NEED one? Don't worry, I met one the other day. His name was Larry, He said "gee, thats tough!" as he handed me my beer. I'm glad to hear of you, and from you, and all of your ilk. But I find it pathetic that you and your ilk think you divert the course of History, and/or change a bloody thing! if you do, how will you prove that? God takes all the credit for Good, we only get "credit" at 18 to 25% or else for all the bad. If you do this "Work" for God, why do you take the credit? Good luck, and God Bless.
-Reidh (pronounced "Ray")

Treason, Only A Word!
It's amazing how groups of individuals (with no facial features or eyebrows)can report our country's secrets as though it was common knowledge and rely on leakers who don't have the guts to show themselves, AND aid the enemy. We can't put the paper on trial for treason. Who would serve the sentence? Let's tell it like it is. Someone who is entrusted and takes an oath to not divulge our nation's intelligence secrets should be called out and shot. There, the paper has nothing to report........

Decline and fall of the bemoaning empire
John Hinderaker over at Powerlineblog fisks the latest Leftie rationalization that the NYT was only publishing what was "readily available" at the UN web site: http://powerlineblog.com/archives/014619.php
Heh! The rats are drowning even as they cling to "lifelines" of rationalizations.

All articles
I like the new format except for one thing. It's very annoying especially for those of us on dial up to have to download more than once to read an article. It was much better when the whole article was on one page and you didn't have to hit next and wait to read it all.
I'll probably read fewer of the articles because of this.

Is there a solution for this that I'M missing?
Sincerely
Carol V.

Times/Post's leaks
Within the beltway among elected/appointed officials there is still fear of the Times/Post editorial pages. To be declared a rube from a flyover area is a fate worse than death. They can handle just about anything but a dirty look at a Georgetown dinner party. That turns their spines to jello.

Note from the real world of truth.
Hugh, will you be sitting at the "center right" hand of Kral Rove when he speaks to the La Raza
convention out there in Calif.

boo, hoo, for you backed the nutter one world
"am-nasty" ones of greed,, start to distance yourself from these loons of "SPP" before they
loose you too

other than that have a nice day carrying their
dirty water, little water boy

It is the New York Treason
They changed the name by their own actions.

Falling circulation, indirectly kills advertising revenue and the net income from the print news media division continues to collapse. Meanwhile, no one noticed that they had lost the trust they once enjoyed.

Now its time to pull a Dan Rather and compound the problem with more gotcha's on the Whitehouse.

I'm sorry but they have now digressed from the voice of the DNC to an arm of El Quida and that my friend is Treason in fact and in name.

Completely off topic flame post unaccept
Other then to attack Hugh on a personl level this is a completely unless post. Glad you have strong feelings about Illegal Immigration but that is completely irrelevent to the topic at hand.
