Poll
Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

A topic of conversation at nearly every event I have attended since the presidential rat race began is each political party’s presidential candidates. Invariably, whenever someone mentions one of the current front runners in either party, someone else in the gathering objects because of that particular candidate’s alleged baggage. Every candidate in the field has baggage in their political or personal past that offends someone else. There are no perfect candidates running for president on either side of the political spectrum. It’s unfortunate, but it is reality.

Here are some examples of how the baggage claims usually unfold.

Hillary Clinton’s baggage is her husband Bill Clinton and her ill-conceived, socialized HillaryCare program that she now wants to resurrect if she becomes president. Barack Obama’s parents may or may not have enrolled him in a Muslim school early in his life; he is too inexperienced; his great-great-great-great maternal grandfather owned slaves. John Edwards made his millions as a trial lawyer; he wants to resurrect the war on poverty and he now thinks he speaks for Jesus on the state of American compassion.

On the Republican baggage carousel, Rudy Giuliani has been married too many times; he’s not socially conservative enough; and his grown son does not think he was a good dad. John McCain is too old; he’s divisive and, if you believe the push-polling from the 2000 South Carolina primary race, he adopted a black child. Mitt Romney is a flip-flopper on the social issues; he’s Mormon; and his hair is too perfectly groomed.

We have to elect a president, so pick the one whose baggage offends you the least. But try to select a candidate with a history and prospect of leadership. If we try real hard to remember that the presidential candidates are human and as fallible as the rest of us, we might identify something about each to suggest the qualities required to lead and inspire our country.

Hillary Clinton’s number one priority is universal, socialized health care. Her second priority is to take corporate profits to pay for it. Barack Obama’s number one priority is universal, socialized health care, although his political rhetoric is not as divisive as most of his opponents. John Edwards’ number one priority is universal, socialized health care. His second priority is a not-so-unifying theme of Two Americas.

Rudy Giuliani was mayor of New York City. He led a successful economic turnaround, returned some fiscal sanity to city government, fought crime and inspired civic pride. He is best known for his impressive leadership during the 9/11 attacks. John McCain is a patriotic war hero, has served in the Senate a long time and knows how it works. Unfortunately, he also knows how to obstruct and increase government’s scope. Mitt Romney was governor of Massachusetts, where he attempted to balance the state’s budget and keep taxes in check. But he also signed into law a socialized health care system, which is already on intensive care.

Most of the presidential candidates have questionable leadership credentials, and less-than-inspiring prospects for addressing public policy with common sense solutions. The eventual president will also be elected by, at best, 50 percent of the registered voters. Probably only half of those will vote for a candidate based on substance. The other half will instead choose the candidate whose baggage they dislike the least.

In the short time we have left before the nomination process ends in early February, let’s look more closely at those candidates who are not afraid to talk about the programs that most challenge our nation’s future. More importantly, consider the candidates who are not afraid to offer real solutions. Presidential leadership requires identifying and working on the right problems, instead of best imitating a Southern accent.

Let’s take a close look at candidates who are able to inspire people to focus on the pursuit of happiness, instead of happiness as defined by the next government program. Individual responsibility is not a foreign concept to those who are already achieving their American dream.

Don’t be deceived into thinking that members of Congress necessarily have the ability to fill Washington, D.C.’s vast leadership void. Congress was not designed to be a leadership body. The legislative branch has consistently demonstrated that fact by oftentimes ignoring even the simplest solutions for the sake of power and re-election.

We need a leader in the White House who is not afraid to hijack the Washington bureaucracy, and courageous enough to smartly challenge politics as usual in Congress.

The American people want a president who will truly lead this nation with the people’s hopes and trust in a new suitcase, and who will leave his or her baggage at home.

To Mr. Cain
You Said: "We need a leader in the White House who is not afraid.....".

I lopped it off right there because we haven't had a leader who wasn't afraid for a long time. The Republican party appears to have abandoned it's principles on small government and abandoned it's fight with the Democraps in order to seek uninimity with them.

Hey Repubs...if we wanted a Democrap in office, we would vote for one.

Like you Mr. Cain, I don't care a lot about baggage, unless it is excessive to the point that it is rediculous. And BTW, you left out Shrillary's baggage with the Rose Law Firm, cattle futures, and all of the other Whitewater fiascos. She has an awful lot of baggage. I don't consider a desire for socialism as baggage, that is the entire Democrap Party platform.

We need an AMERICAN candidate
Someone willing to stand up for American citizens, not pandering to foreign nationals illegally in our country. Someone willing to secure our borders and enforce our laws. Someone willing to uphold the oath of office and the Constitution. One wouldn't think it would be as hard as it seems to be. The current President has forgotten who he was elected by and is supposed to be representing.

These next 2 years are vital to the future of this country. For 2007 we must make certain that McCain/Kennedy or whatever it's called this year does not pass the House. It will pass the Senate. The President will sign it, followed by the Totalization Treaty with Mexico, which qualifies former illegals with just 6 qtrs(18 mo) even if worked illegally, the benefits that we had to work 40 qtrs(10 yrs) to qualify for.

In 2008 we must make the candidates address border security and immigration enforcement.
20-30 million citizens of other countries are in our country illegally, 55% from Mexico, most of the rest from other Central and South American countries. Let's not ignore the leftward voting trends of these countries. It is notable that they picked May Day, an old communist day of celebration for their marches.

Most polls show at least half of the American citizens of Hispanic descent want the borders and laws enforced. Republicans will not win by alienating their current voters to get 40% of a new small block that will grow very large, very fast if amnesty is granted. That will grow the Democrats vote larger and faster as the influx increases exponentially as the result of another amnesty. It will spell the end of the Republican Party. The people who used to vote Republican will stop voting or form a new party. Conservatives will lose political influence and we will slide inexorably towards socialism (it has already started).

Most of what you hear about this issue is political propaganda that tries to convince you to give up your country without a fight, including on Fox News. The big money players are all on board the cheap labor express, they care not that American citizens do not want another amnesty. We know the last one resulted in 10 times the number of illegal aliens and a general disregard of our laws. The next one will be equally successful.

We need Comprehensive Immigration Enforcement, not reform. We need to restore respect for the law and the faith of the American people that their government is not selling them out. Amnesty for the illegal aliens is also amnesty for the corrupt companies who have been employing them. Money trumps everything, including love of country. Multi-nationals have no loyalty to country by definition, they see us as a market, not a nation. They see people as workers, documented or undocumented, no difference. If they can't send the work to where the labor is cheaper, then they want to bring the cheap labor here. Citizenship is meaningless.

If we love our Constitution and our representative Republic and we intend to keep it we must not surrender our sovereignty or abandon the rule of law. Profits must not supercede security. We should not create a new path to citizenship. We have a path to citizenship, illegal aliens have ignored it and bad choices do have consequences.

Interesting
The presupposition of the column, faulty in my opinion, is that there are only three Rep contenders: McCrazy, Bald Hillary, and Romney.

Um, I don't think so. This election doesn't take place for fifteen more months; the earliest primaries aren't for almost twelve.

Fred Thompson would be great, and virtually (if not completely) baggage free. He can't even be criticized for bad acting! He's actually pretty good.

Newt could run. Personally, I don't think he's electable on the national level, but he could contend, baggage and all.

On the Dem side, c'mon.... you don't think the Wide One, AlGore, is giving it serious consideration? As is Jean Francoise Kerry, I have no doubt.

Sometimes, these columnists really do miss the forest as they study the bark on a single tree.

You hit the nail on the head!
Excellent article.

In addition to the GOP old media "big 3" - take a look at a viable "dark horse." GOP field will soon grow to "Big 4."

He tied for first with Rudy G. and John Mc. in the South Carolina straw poll.

He came in first in the Arizona straw poll.
He wins big every time he runs for congress, so he knows how to run a good campaign.

More important - he is on America's side on the issues.

Congressman Duncan Hunter. His site:
http://www.gohunter08.com

Don't take my word for it - research for yourself. Take your time. You have until Feb. 2008.

Duncan Hunter
ValiantForTruth mentioned Hunter. I don't know much about him, as the msm is consumed with ann smiths(lowercaps intended)death, and 9 lousy fired lawyers, which is amazing in itself.
I have come to the conclusion, after reading my local leftist newspaper, owned by a consortium of socialistic communists, and being exposed to my environment in my City, where it seems 40% of the people are not speaking english, that I will not vote for any candidate that refuses to enforce the laws of this country, including immigration.
I am looking at Tom Tancredo(my representative), or Newt Gringrich, or perhaps Duncan Hunter, heck maybe even Fred Thompson(a good actor is better than the bad actors in D.C.)
In short, I have apparently become a one trick voter. I want they government to get the heck out of my life and do only what it was supposed to do in 1776!

The BIG 3 Again??? Sheeesh
In the short time we have left before the nomination process ends in early February... HUH?
And I wish these people would stop telling me I have only the 3 choices to pick from...

I want a candidate who is;

1) Strong on National Defense
2) Will Make Border Security a Priority
3) Will Appoint Strict Constructionist Judges
4) Pro-Life
5) Pro 2nd Amendment
6) Has Impeccable Conservative Credentials
7) Will Address the Entitlement Program Problem
8) Will Restore Quality to Education
9) Understands Foreign Policy
10) Against Gay Marriage
11) Environmentally Friendly But Not Eco-Nutz
12) A Man of Strength, and Character With the Backbone To Stand Tall Against The Liberal Agenda

This Man Is Fred Thompson
I believe he is a Winner!

Magnificus
Yep, bro, you and me, same page.

I think...
....we should ignore the MSMs big 3 and concentrate on OUR 3, Ron Paul, Fred Thompson and Duncan Hunter. These three men would be good for the USA and I think both sides of the aisle can back any one of them.

re: ILLEGAL invaders
Fred Thompson cannot be counted on to oppose the invasion across our border; Duncan Hunter and Ron Paul are solid in this regard.

I mostly agree with the goals noted by Magnificus... my CRITICAL goal is regaining control over the 12-20 million here UNLAWFULLY (including Visa violators). America will begin to come apart if the powers that be make citizens and voters of them. They will ALL vote for entitlement govt., bring in the relatives, and breed like rodents, so we will devolve into a third world welfare state barrio plagued with bilingualism, multiculturalism, and myriad and snowballing socio-economic ills--> crimes, drugs, gangs, school erosion, community blight, balkanization, illegitimacy, school dropouts. Still sound like "cheap" labor?!?1

Duncan Hunter is the Real Candidate
It seems like the conservative media is getting as bad as as the main stream media, in that they keep pushing the same three potential candidates over and over, despite the fact that conservatives refuse to support them. If the big 3 are the only option, then the race is over and Hillary or Barack has won. I cannot understand why all of the people with popular shows or articles keep ignoring Duncan Hunter. For crying out loud, he understands our border problem. He served with the 173rd Airborne and the Army Rangers in Vietnam. His son has served in Iraq, and his son loves his Dad. Hunter is pro life.
Hunter meets the Magnificus test noted previously.

adriancaarr
Agreed. Time to send the scumbag RINO's packing. Check my blog (click on my handle) to read about the p.o.s NYC RINO mayor.

We need a leader
We need a candidate who when elected does not immediately start running for re-election--we need a leader who will actual stand up to the liberals/conservatives/independents and lead for the good of the country. He/she will not be overly concerned with "what the world thinks" but concentrate on protecting our country in the war against terrorist. That person realizes all politics is partisan and not waste time in "crossing the aisle" attempts. I am certain such a leader will have the backing of the vast majority of the country and the people will speak to their elected representatives and good things will happen.

It seems to me personal baggage these days is over rated--according to the media adultery, divorce, and sexual preference is no longer immoral nor unforgiveable--one can keep money in a freezer and still be reelected.

Let's concentrate on LEADERSHIP!

g
DO not let the lefty bloggers drive Gonzalez and Rove out of their positions. They don't care about firing att.'s general or anything except trying to dictate to and cripple this admin. Send counter emails as Hillary is asking her hordes to do.

HUNTER 2008

Republican voters still get to decide who their nominee will be. Money only buys elections when people act like sheep. If 80% of Republicans are indeed seeking a conservative, we can nominate one. We can nominate Duncan Hunter. The money players won't like it and are trying to convince us only Rudy, Romney, or McCain can win. Hogwash. 49% of people will never vote for Hillary. Only 60% voted last time and turnout was the difference. My belief is Rudy would push turnout down. There might even be a third party, splitting the vote. Give Americans a chance to vote for a candidate who WILL secure the border and watch what happens to turnout. Americans want their government to fulfill it's most basic responsibility.

The primary responsibility of the U.S. government is to protect the territorial integrity and people of this country. They have completely abdicated this responsibility. Both parties have been complicit in this. We are being told it is not possible to control our borders, enforce our laws, and thereby control our destiny as a nation. Hogwash. We are being sold out by corporations intent on importing workers for jobs that can't be exported with the taxpayers paying the true costs, financial and human. If we act like sheep and don't stop the inundation across our borders, we will lose our country without a bleat.

Don't forget brother Jim
Jim Gilmore is threatening to toss his hat in too if he finds the Repub. candidates not fiscally conservative enough.

Be afraid - Hillary CAN campaign
Brothers and Sisters - as Magnificus et al note above, much actual campaign time remains.
The way the primaries fall, we could have an actual nominating convention with a dozen or more rounds of votes.

Therefore, bring on the dark horses and late entries!! I like Fred Thompson, even though I favor Duncan Hunter.

May the best man win!!

If there are more viable America-First candidates, bring 'em on! Let's have a true choice, let's have a series of serious debates on substantive issues.

Free Enterprise, property rights, low taxes, efficient and limited government, Strong national defense, Strong trade and fiscal policy, judges that judge, schools that teach, borders that are borders - it is common sense clear what is good for America.

Little 3
I understand people wanting the Hunter/Paul/Thompson nominees, but we also need a presidential candidate who can run a campaign and get his message out. Two of them aren't doing a good job at it and the other hasn't announced that he's running. Does anyone really believe Ron Paul has a chance? Most of the country has no idea who he is. Duncan Hunter is better, but largely unmemorable, because he gets little media time, which is something he needs to seriously work on. Don't blame the media, blame the candidate and his campaign.

But hey, it's the primaries, so vote for your favorite, but stop blaming everyone else for ignoring candidates who are unknown and not making any headway.

abugbabe - its votes whats counts
Good observation my friend.
It is up to the candidate to motivate.

So far the good Congressman Duncan Hunter has gotten his message out where it counts:
Arizona - Duncan Hunter FIRST

part deux
(sorry about that folks, clicked on wrong place)
Duncan Hunter campaign success to date:

Arizona - Duncan Hunter FIRST PLACE straw poll.
South Carolina - Duncan Hunter TIED for FIRST with 2 of the "big 3".

Hunter campaigns - people vote for him.

Plus - Hunter won his seat initially in a district that was 2-1 democrat registration.

Just think - Hunter might bag the California electoral votes. If we can achieve that, there is real hope.

Be brave - audacity, audacity, audacity!!
