Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Since the race for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination began, roughly, on Inauguration Day 2005, it is not too early to speculate on who might be the leading candidates for the eventual nominees’ vice presidential pick.

The media’s attention is focused for now on the three-way dust-up between Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY), liberal Hollywood mogul and former Clinton supporter David Geffen and Senator Barack Obama (D-IL). The media cannot avoid a story filled with Hollywood drama and the politics of sex and race. Geffen, who hosted a megastar fundraiser for Obama, told the New York Times, “Everybody in politics lies, but (the Clintons) do it with such ease, it’s troubling.”

By comparison, the Republican nomination race is as exciting as MSNBC’s Countdown with Keith Olbermann. Like Olbermann’s show, no one is watching.

Poor John Edwards has been relegated to bridesmaid status, but he won’t catch the vice-presidential garter this time. As the late Texas Governor Ann Richards might say, he can’t hep it. Edwards is the white male with perfect hair, a former vice-presidential candidate with a huge new mansion. At least Sen. John Kerry, who served in Vietnam, had the good sense to not enter the race. John Edwards is so 2004.

Given the liberal media’s characterization since 2001 of Vice President Dick Cheney as “Bush’s Brain,” the eventual Democratic nominee will surely choose someone with the charisma of the proverbial bucket of warm saliva. Since the likely Democratic nominee will be a “first,” as the media will repeat ad nauseam for the next century or so, he or she must balance the demographics of the ticket by selecting a relatively unknown white male. One “first” at a time is big enough a bite to take politically.

Let us consider the possibilities. It is probably safe to assume that if Clinton or Obama wins the nomination, they won’t choose the other as their running mate. A female or African-American presidential candidate cannot have a running mate who will overshadow their historical bid. Bill Richardson is probably out, given his past life as a cabinet secretary and U.N. ambassador in Bill Clinton’s administration. Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), who wants to replace the Department of Defense with a Department of Peace, is out. Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE), who has already characterized Obama as “articulate” and “clean,” shoots his mouth off more than Howard Stern. He’s out. Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT) hails from the northeast and is best known for, well, he’s not known for anything. Dodd is out.

Which brings us to the governors.

Three of the six sitting Democratic governors whose terms expire in 2008 are white males with a biography that would balance the ticket politically and geographically for conservative Democrats and independents. They are Brian Schweitzer of Montana, Mike Easley of North Carolina and Joe Manchin of West Virginia.

Schweitzer has an extensive background in agriculture, has owned a number of agricultural businesses and advised lawmakers on state and federal farm policies. He and his wife have developed irrigated cropland in four continents. Easley is a former district attorney and attorney general from a southern state. According to his bio, USA Today named him one of the nation’s top “drug busters.” Manchin, also from the south, has a business background and served as West Virginia’s Secretary of State. He gained a measure of notoriety by advocating for safer mining standards following the 2006 Sago mine explosion.

Former Iowa governor Tom Vilsack just dropped out of the presidential race, citing a lack of money. Well, that and the fact he was hovering around one percent national support in the latest Quinnipiac University poll. Vilsack’s timing in exiting the race may play to his eventual favor. Vilsack is dull as paint primer and was raised in an orphanage, rendering him a safe vice-presidential pick for Clinton or Obama. Vilsack, free from the burden of governing, can spend the next year making grand speeches to “unite the party” on topics ranging from ending the war on terrorism tomorrow to claiming that tax cuts cause global warming.

If Clinton or Obama eventually becomes president, their vice-president will serve his term in a virtual witness protection program. The Clinton outfit, particularly, will give the cement shoes treatment to any administration official who dares embarrass Hillary. The Clinton or Obama administration will not be sidetracked or eclipsed by a white male with his own future presidential aspirations.

One thing is for sure. If Hillary wins her party’s nomination, her vice president won’t be David Geffen.

Another pitcher, Mr. John Nance Obama?
..Throwing darts here, but if one of these are correct, then I knew it all along !

Here are some good GOP picks.

Giuliani- V. Hillary / VP John Ashcroft
Giuliani V. Obama/ VP J.C. Watts
, Michael Steele, or Herman Cain.

Romney / Gingrich

McCain/ Romney or Cain

McCain / Cain has a nice ring to it.
Or at least an echo.
Geographically, and politically balanced.

Them Dems: You wrote : "If Clinton or Obama eventually becomes president, their vice-president will serve his term in a virtual witness protection program." Absolutly right.

Obama / Gov. Granholm of MI- a Cal-Berkley / Harvard Lawyer, a pretty, young Hillary
- with political accomplishments
- without an impeached husband.
Could be problematic when the press notices that she is prettier than Barak.

Hillary / Obama - Could REALLY need his help to win if she hasn't destroyed him completely but she would return the Veep's power and influence to John Nance Garner levels!

Too soon to tell with Hillary, her choice will be sooooo poll and focus group driven that it will be decided at the convention. By Bill.

2008
Giuliani/Hunter... That would make sense.
California is not as safe to the Donks as it once was... Even in last year's nightmare some conservatives DID get close to taking Cabinet Seats. (In California Cabinet members are elected, not appointed) If 2008 is a better year for the Republicans don't count California out, even if it only gives the Elephants a higher share of the popular vote. The same in New York.

VP--Obama (Dems),Huckabee/Haley Barbour?
Mr Cain,

Enjoy whenever you fill-in for Boortz on WSB. Do you think the Dems may ultimately land up with a Clinton/Obama ticket for Prez/VP? Hillary locks up the women and Obama locks in a lot of the minorities and younger voters.

Also, do you think a Southern governor (like Haley Barbour or ex-governor, Mike Huckabee) for VP on the Republican side, may be a good strategy for them? No matter if McCain or Rudy become the Prez candidate, having Haley or Huckabee may reassure a lot of heartland and/or evangelical voters?

Thanks.

I Really don't care about the Dems

.....Mr. Cain ...

.....The Dems could pick the pope as their VP and they still wouldn't get my vote ...I could never vote for that secular/socialist party ...

.....As far as the Republicans go ...I would suggest a VP with very strong conservative credentials ...my choice would be Rick Santorum ...he is young, attractive, articulate, principled and would put Pennsylvania's 21 electoral votes in play .....COLOSSUS

Basic assumtions flawed?
The basic assumption of this article is that both of the front-runners have too much hubris to pick someone who might be more adored. I disagree. I think Mrs. Clinton would do whatever it takes, and that having Obama on her ticket would be a strength she would not forego. I don't know that she'd consent to be his second, or that the Dem party would go that route.
Barring both on the ticket, I think the author is wrong to discount Richardson. He'd be a natural choice for either of them.
Meanwhile, I am glad that the Republican side is suitably boring (so Olberman) for now... I want the Dems to have the spotlight for a good long while now. The public needs to everything they have to say, and everything they have to say about each other. Their publci needs to hang on their every word and move ad nauseam. Entertainment for the rest of us.

Non-Politico
Should Hillary Clinton, The grande dame of political expediency, and dishonesty extraordinaire be ushered into the White House, I'll not be around to witness the inauguration, and the swearing in on Bill's "little black book" as I will have shot myself or gone to a war zone to be killed.

I tremble at the thought which came to me when I considered who she might call upon to be the VP, but my money is on her announcing that George cLOONEY will receive the honors of being her "brain." Actually, I believe George would be a wonderful choice since he only uses his brain occasionally, and even then it only functions when the camera is on, and he has a stand-in.

If barrack "Trauma" Obama gets the prize, I believe he will choose someone like Cynthia McKinney so they can do the "good cop" - "bad cop" routine. If he doesn't pick her I believe it will be anyone who likes his ears, and promises not to tease him about them.

If either Hillary or Barrack is elected, I can assure you that the cameras will be constantly rolling in the Presidential Mansion as they will have filled their cabinet with only the most enlightened, and talented servants who will lavish them with scripted praise, and will always be prepared with a supply of make-up to cover their real faces.

Why not Richardson?

I think you are too quick to dismiss New Mexico Governor Richardson, who would make any Democratic ticket -- particularly one headed by a seeming liberal -- more palatable to right-of-center swing voters as well as Hispanic voters. He's respected and liked among many Republicans, he's got experience in foreign policy during both Democratic and Republican administrations, and he has shown fiscal responsibility in running his state. Yet he doesn't have the "show up the boss" kind of demeanor.

Reply to Herman Cain

I agree 100%.

"If Clinton or Obama eventually becomes president, their vice-president will serve his term in a virtual witness protection program. The Clinton outfit, particularly, will give the cement shoes treatment to any administration official who dares embarrass Hillary (HC)."

Just another opinion
If Hillary gets the nod, she will ask Obama to be the VP. He will hold his nose and take it because it is a win-win. If they win, he is strong for 2016 - if they lose he is still viable for 2012.
Hillary will never consent to be the number two so if Obama or Edwards gets the nod, they may be inclined to pick the other to be the VP.

Hope not based on fact for Republicans is that Rudy gets the nod and picks Hunter as the VP. If California or New York goes Republican, the Democrats chances are almost nonexistent - they would need to take Florida or Texas to balance a loss like that.
Santorum should be on any Republican's short list.

Veep
Even though I don't like the guy, I would like to see Easly with Obama. It will pretty much sew up a defeat for the left. Just wait and see what he has in his closet. Besides the fact that he is no fan of the military, even in a state with a high veteran and active duty population. He didn't even show up to honor his appointed NG TAG for recieving a high award (I can't remember what exactly it was,) but he didn't even show. And I have yet to see him at a lot of welcome home ceremonies

Vic
Yeah, you're probably right; but the underlying these of my post (and Mr. Cain's column) is that whomever is selected will be a virtual non-entity.

Obama may, I say may, be willing to tolerate a VP with asperations of his own; it is certain that the Supreme Anointed One will not.

To Dash42
It will be someone who is known in kalifornia but not widely known in the rest of the country.

Her objective will be to sew up Kalifornia and the West coast after beating off Obama who the West coast wanted.

Likewise, if Obama gets it, he will want to sew up the black vote in the South, which when combined with the yellow dog Democrats could deliver him some of the States like Georgia and Florida.

Re Herman Cain's column
You write: "Like Olbermann’s show, no one is watching."

I'm someone, Mr. Cain, and I watch Countdown. And when Olbermann begins contributing essays to the NBC Nightly News very soon I'll be watching, because he's a thoughtful man with many worthwhile things to say. ~Dorrie

No Idea who
The Supreme Anointed One will consent to allow on Her ticket. It doesn't really matter in the end as they will be utterly ignored. And forget about competence, if they are competent The Supreme Anointed One will not go anywhere near them - it would be too easy for the Media, or others, to actually pay attention to someone other than Her.

Cain is dead on that the VP will be a non-entity reduced to presiding over close votes in the Senate (of which there will be none if the Dems retain control), or stepping on political land mines for Her, he (and it will be a he) will have no other function.

Vic: I like your idea that the Supreme Anointed One would possibly select someone from North Kalifornia (no brainer there, it'll be someone from San Fransicko as well), but whom will She consent to be named? Feinstein? Nope - occaisionaly sharp of mind and wit; Boxer - please, she and DiFi are joined at the hip; Tsarina Pelosikiavich? No chance. No doubt someone white, male, and timid - essentially any homeless bum the can find for Her who doesn't mind political oblivion...

The VP for the Dems depends on who gets
the nod. If Obama gets it, the likely VP candidate will be a Dem from the South. If Shrillary gets it the VP will likely be a Dem from Kalifornia.
