Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Israel’s ground invasion into northern Gaza last weekend was surprising for many people. Unfortunately, the ground war had to occur in light of Hamas’ failure to cease bombing Israeli citizens. Palestinian sympathizers are already depicting the struggle as a David vs. Goliath conflict. In a strange biblical reversal the Israelis are now being painted as Goliath because of their superior military power. In reality, the Palestinians have been the aggressors who hope to win the war for public approval and sympathy.

As I have analyzed the situation, it seems to me that Israel’s recent escalation of the conflict is ironically the only way they can actually hope for peace. Israel’s goal is obviously to topple, impair, or reform the Palestinian government. They hope that a governing entity will emerge from this ground invasion with which someone can reason. Once Israeli leaders decided that they had to stop the killing of their citizens immediately, this course of action became inevitable. Even a casual observer understands that Hamas cannot be trusted to negotiate peace in good faith. Despite these facts, no one wants Israel to create their own version of Iraq. Many ministers believe that Israel did the most moral thing in a morally confused dilemma.

I am not advocating war. Neither am I suggesting that all Palestinians are evil. Other the other hand, I do believe that peace-loving Christians should advocate that all nations deal harshly with terrorists. Despite my strong sentiments, a reasonable person may still ask, “Aren’t the Israelis stooping to the same moral level as Hamas, because their violent retaliation will result in the loss of innocence, civilian life? The answer is “no.”

Unfortunately, there are times, in a fallen world, when war cannot be avoided. Bible believing Christians are universally slow to endorse war, but sometimes it is the only option to defend innocent life.

St. Augustine, known as a father of modern Christianity, is often credited with developing foundational, biblical premises of how national armed conflict should be viewed. He did not promote war because of self-defense. Augustine believed that it was never permissible to kill someone in order to defend our personal lives or property. Rather, based on Jesus’ teaching of turning the other cheek (Matt. 5:39; Luke 6:29), he felt that Christian love required a nonviolent response to imminent personal danger. But this rule of “turning the other cheek” did not apply to the Christian obligation to care for the defenseless and weak. Therefore, according to Augustine, Christian rulers were obligated to make peace in order to protect subjects—even if force of arms was the only way to stop an attack upon the defenseless.

Augustine’s biblical views became the basis of the medieval Christian doctrine called the Just War Theory. St. Thomas Aquinas built on the writings of Augustine as he crystallized this doctrine. He taught that there were three conditions necessary for a morally legitimate war:

1. Legitimate authority
2. Just cause
3. Right intention

In the interest of time I will not attempt to trace the concept of just wars from Aquinas’s day to the present. I will simply summarize the modern principles derived from Augustine’s and St. Thomas Aquinas’s doctrines that are accepted by most nations. These principles are divided into two categories:

1. Jus ad bellum (justice in resort to war) principles, which apply to political leaders. These include:

• Just cause
• Legitimate authority
• Comparative justice
• Right intention
• Last resort
• Reasonable chance of success

2. Jus in bello (justice in the conduct of war) principles, which apply to military commanders and soldiers. These include:

• Proportionality
• Discrimination

Most of the points are self-explanatory. But I want to zero in on three of them—right intention, proportionality, and discrimination. As we think about the concept of right intention, we must keep in mind that war is most moral when its primary objective is to stop genocide or accomplish some other noble aim. Unfortunately, many nations wage war based on less honorable purposes. Wars to gain access to natural resources such as oil, minerals, or even water rights violate the primary concept of right intention. A few examples of immoral reasons for war are ethnic cleansing, economic gain, expansion of territory, and increased international influence.

The second point that needs to be explained is proportionality, sometimes referred to as the “principle of macro-proportionality.” This is in keeping with the words of Jesus in Luke 14:31–32. This principle suggests that the amount of force used should be in proportion to the military objective pursued. In other words, moral warriors would not kill soldiers simply to kill them. Further, they would certainly not kill or maim innocent civilians. This leads us to the third point that we want to highlight—discrimination.

This concept says essentially that soldiers should fight soldiers. It is sometimes called “the principle of noncombatant immunity.” The unfortunate reality of war is that there will always be some “collateral damage” or loss of life of innocent civilians. But the principle still holds: we should seek to minimize the number of noncombatants that are hurt. “Weapons,” such as land mines, are especially reprehensible because they kill noncombatants for years after the conflict.

In conclusion, we should all pray for the peace of Jerusalem. As Christians pray, we should not be drawn into an anti-Israel propaganda campaign designed to make them out to be the “bad guys” in an unfortunate moral quagmire. The foreign affairs arena will require great discernment over the next few years. I hope that President-elect Obama and Senator Hillary Clinton are up to the task. Whether we like it or not, America is still the world’s policeman.

Should We Support This Action?

Where can I send my check?

Corndog
You already do on the tune of 3 billion dollars which doesn't include the weapons systems sold to it by the US nor Israeli weapons systems jointly developed by the US--which Israel then turns around and sells or tries to sell to China.

Akagi
"Israel then turns around and sells or tries to sell to China."

I hear you. They took a page right out of the clinton playbook.

Israel's Invasion
The United States should always support Israel's right to survive in an area of the world that is hostile to them. This invasion was necessary. Hamas and the Palestinians (most of whom are actually Egyptians)do not believe that Israel has a right to exist.

The Arab nations claim they support the Palestinians, However, they all refuse to let any of them move to their country. Syria, where the true Palestinians (they were then called Phillistines) actually came from and where their original true homeland used to be, stated a few years ago that if any Palestinians attempted to move to Syria they would be killed. Now that's real support.

I, personally, think that this time Israel should drive all the Palestinians, not to mention Hamas, out of Gaza and the rest of Israel and not allow them back in.

Since the Arab countries pay thousands of dollars to the families of suicide bombers, I think Israel should hold those families responsible for the deaths incurred by their family members.

I believe that Israel should use whatever means are necessary to ensure their survival, up to and including the use of nuclear weapons. The United States should support them one thousand percent!!

Wow, Chad.
You really believe that God is launching kassams at innocent people?

BTW, Harold
"Palestinians" had no connexion with Philistines other than their name (which, incidentally was invented by their first self-appointed turdocrat, Haj-amin Husseini after Syria rejected supporting him for his "entitled" position of Jerusalem Mufti--till then, he had termed himself a South Syrian). A high percentage of the "Palestinians" are in fact descendants of immigrants from Iraq and Syria invited by Husseini to prevent a Jewish nation (he had a vitriolic hatred for Jews, as shown by his incitement of 1929 Jerusalem riots). The closest outside equivalent to the "Palestinian" is the Bihari (specifically referring to the group labelled such in Bangladesh), urdu speakers who originally migrated from India's criminal-haven state at Partition and also supported Pakistan government's suppression of their Bengali neighbours (akin to Husseini's support of Nazis to commit Holocaust); coincidentally, Biharis post-1976, wound up like "Palestinians" another way--being permanently rejected by the nation which should have absorbed them, Pakistan (even during 1999-2007 when Pakistan was ruled by Musharraf, whose ancestors migrated from the Bihar city of Muzaffarpur--aka "India's crime capitol"--to Mehrauli a suburb of Delhi).

Sorry, reverend...
... but anyone who requires a tour of the gospels, Augustine & Aquinas to reach a conclusion on this is a moral featherweight.

Israel had no choice
The Israelis were terrorized every day by vicious rocket fire directed against their women and children and their old and their lame. Hamas had no legitimate grievances; they were given the authority to improve the Gaza strip and instead bought and smuggled in rockets intended for one purpose only. It is beyond comprehension that there should be any condemnation against the Israelis. God speed on their mission to pacify Hamas.

May the Best Man WIn
The only way to peace is for one side to annihilate the other. The "peace process" only prolongs the process. The Muslims have demonstrated that they understand this, this is why every cease fire is a one-sided affair while they continue to fire rockets. Regardless of whose side you are on, the only solution is victory.

-
"Once Israeli leaders decided that they had to stop the killing of their citizens immediately, this course of action became inevitable. "

How many israelis died from rockets the last 6 months? Zero How many have died since their attack on Gaza"? 4-5

The war has nothing to do with the rockets, its all about taking Palestinian land.

taft
So how should Israel react to rockets being fired at their schools?

western bondbeam
I don't know, but I do think its a big mistake to kill so many back. Bush at the beginning of his presidency made it clear that the US was going to have a hands off approach, even after Powell warned him what unleashing Sharon would mean for the Palestinians. I know you all hate Carter, he wasn't the greatest president, but he did get Egypt to sheath their swords, so, we need to try again.

Taft
It still doesnt' explain why Israel has no right to retaliate in kind. The UN, media, world at large has no condemnation against Palestine for shooting iranian rockets at israel and yet they condemn Israel for reacting with violence. Looks like a huge double standard to me.

Yes.
and, yes.

Taft
Your tickets to Israel and transportation arrangements to the Israeli town of Sderot have been mailed. Please be prepared to depart immediately for your new distination. No need to pack, you will be running from in-coming fire with such frequency, there will be no need for leisure wear.

Taft's "Logic"
""How many israelis died from rockets the last 6 months? Zero How many have died since their attack on Gaza"? 4-5

The war has nothing to do with the rockets, its all about taking Palestinian land. ""

The above is a classic example of Rectal-Cranial-Inversion.

If Canada was lobbing rockets into the US, would you think it was no big deal just because no Americans were killed in the past 6 months? How many israelis have been killed by those rockets in the past 60 years?

I suppose you're another one of those calling for "Proportional response", right taft?

Well a Proportional response would be for israel to just lob some rockets into gaza neighborhoods and schools, of course, then they'd be evil for killing innocent palestinians anyhow. Does Hamas have any culpability for shooting all those rockets into israel?

And the line about "Taking Palestininan Land" is so far off the mark I think you shot yourself in the foot.

Israel Pulled OUT of Gaza and the west bank in 2005! And it was that evil Sharon who ordered the pullout. Remember those pictures of israeli soldiers forcing settlers out of their settlements??

Israel has tried to do things your way for the past few years, and got nothing but rockets and "Death To Israel" for their efforts.

You can't negotiate with a mad dog, you just keep saying Nice Doggie, till you can find a big rock.

I suppose the Holocaust never happened either, right Taft??

Scratch a liberal, and you'll find an anti-semite.

Soldiers should fight soldiers…

So what is to be done when the provokers of the war hide behind women and children and launch their missiles in the midst of civilians? I’m sure that Israel would much prefer to fight solders, but they are hard to find when they blend in with the civilian population. When will we stop making excuses for the Palestinian leadership? What would be your response if Mexico started firing missiles into the US?

Go Israel Go

I do feel sorry for the innocent Palestinian civilians but they have to make the choice to evict Hamas or continue to act as their shield.

I agree with reply #1
They have to make that choice! In addition we should use their method,do you see MSM chasing down their troops to take pictures?Do they spend $$$$$$$$ to destroy 1 building with laser guided anything?

Israeli Struck an American in the Face
In 1996, an Israeli war veteran, Forrest Silverman, struck me in the face in the offices of Sysorex Corporation in Fairfax, Virginia. The attack was unprovoked--he simply did not like the fact that I was a Christian.

That being said, Israel's offensive in Gaza is fully justified. Detractors point to destruction in Gaza far exceeding that in Israel proper. But the destruction in Japan resulting from World War II far exceed that in the US. No matter--Japan started that war, just as Hamas started the present one.

Hama's attack was unprovoked, just as Mr. Silverman's one was in 1996.

Israel

Estimated 9,000 rockets fired into Israel since 2001. The left says nothing, France says nothing, The United States says nothing, The UN says nothing, the world says nothing.

Shame on those who now speak up against Israels response to 8 years of terror. Shame on the Palestinian citizens for protecting Hamas.

Shame on the press covering and protecting a terrorists group (Hamas) for saying little if anything about the deaths of children, women and men of Israel.

All the above may be considered defenders of terrorism and this includes the US government. The President, the Senate and the House.

Israel is not the villian!

Hamas is comprised of thugs! Their goal is the obliteration of Israel. You cannot negotiate a peace with a group whose goal is the destruction of a nation.
They hide their weapons in mosques and schools. They revel in body counts of their own innocents. They have children's T.V. programs encouraging hatred of jews and the "honorable " aspirations of their children as suicide bombers!
Anyone posting here who thinks that Israel is equally responsible knows nothing of the true "Palestinian situation".

OBAMA'S VACATION AND GAZA WAR
Six days into Obama's Christmas vacation in Hawaii, Honolulu suffered a massive power outage that left the Obamas without electricity for 11 hours. The outage began at approximately 7 PM, December 26th four and a half hours before the start of Operation Cast Lead, Israel's offensive against Hamas in Gaza. When Obama got word of the operation his seaside compound was totally in the dark without power. Once he becomes President Obama would do well to dash his plan to make reviving of the Palestinian-Israeli peace process the most important of his foreign policy goals. The outage in Hawaii was a warning that he is powerless to achieve anything, that the Palestinian people are still hopeful of victory and are not ready for peace, and that like Bill Clinton he will get badly burned if he attemps the impossible.

The Promise of "Peace"
First, pray for the peace of Jerusalem always. This attack on Isreal is multifacited; not only has Hamas re-started firing rockets into Isreal sence the 6 month "truce" ended (the day J Carter visited Syria;on the aniversary of Hamas founding) At the same time Abbas claimed that the negoiations for a peace treaty could not be reached. The rest of the cabal that hates Isreal, including the UN, the EU, the MSM, and the Islamic world in general started its verbal condemnation and assults on Iseral. Knowing that this situation will go on until a seven yr peace treaty will be brokered (soon I hope) by the one who will rule the world, gives me great confidence that man will soon also see "changes" that eventually will bring ALL to their knees; in every way possible. All fortold, all coming to pass, nothing man can do will prevent it, just keep praying.

Taft
Multiple articles cite that over 400 Israelis died and over 2500 have been injured since 2000 from Palestinian attacks that included tens of thousands attacks from rockets and morters. You're intelligent and read these articles but carefully ignore them in order to push your sympathy for the terrorists.

You sir, are vile.

Good points, LC
As I have oft stated in past, the closest equivalent of "Palestinians" situation is that of Biharis in Bangladesh:
(A) both largely actually have ancestry elsewhere ("Palestininans" in Syria, Iraq, Egypt; Biharis obvious enough from nomenclature)
(B) both have also had habits of "nest-fouling" (1970 "Black September" in Jordan as well as goonda-rule of Lebanon 1970-2002 by PLO; Biharis by linguistically benefitting during 24 years of Pakistan misrule of Bangladesh)
(C) both have backed evil governments' genocidal operations against their perceived opponents (Haj-amin Husseini's backing of Hitler, down to recruiting Bosnian/Kosovar SS; Biharis forming over 90% of pro-Pakistan "razakar" goonda-militias in 1971)
(D) as Palestinians have been non-accepted by Arab nations (despite of their lack of distinction from other Arabs), so have Biharis since 1976 been non-accepted by Pakistan (even when one of Bihar ancestry--Pervez Musharraf--misruled Pakistan)

For ApolloSpeaks (and also LC): the only concept of "peace" by most Islamists (including Hamas and Fatah) is that of opponents "resting in" it.

Go, Israel
It’s about damn time! Tough love for spoiled brats who believe they can bomb, bomb and bomb again without retribution from a sovereign nation. Suck it up, cowards, and quit whining. And screw the UN. Isn’t it about time we moved that whole ridiculous mess to France where it more properly belongs. I’m sick of the world’s grand, effete poseurs and their diplomatic immunities, living large off the fat of American largesse, while spitting on the very hospitality that allows them to do so; and their constant jackassed braying about “non-proportional reponse” when the outcome of retaliation against terrorist acts doesn’t conform to their world view of the way things are “supposed to be”. As for the terrorists (you know, the certifiably insane who TARGET the innocents among us, either out of tribal hatreds or for their glorious religious jihads), kill ‘em all! Don’t stop till they drop…………Go Israel!

Coward Terrorists!

Excellent, thoughtful article. Here is hoping we continue to stand firm with Israel!

After Israel bombs we hear of homes being hit, female and child casualties....where are the men???? They hide their weapons in their homes, surround them with their families and then take off for their own safety and further terrorism. Terrorists are such ANIMALS!

Remain firm Israel.....and let's hope for backbone in the spine of Obama...........he has yet to show it in his life!

Yes
We should support this action. The Palestinians can have peace and open borders any time they want. All they have to do is stop launching hundreds (sometimes over a thousand) of rockets and mortars at Israel every year. Every single launch is an act of war, or an attempted mass murder (depending on how you want to view it) and that makes them liable to the treatment that follows from making acts of war and attempts at mass murder.

Some folks point to the disparity in casualties as some sort of 'proof' that the Palestinian threat is not real, that Israel is the bully. The fact is that Israel's casualty count is low only because:
a) they have a pretty decent civil-defense system that often warns of incoming in time for civilians to seek shelter
b) most of the Palestinian rockets are crudely made, short range and poorly employed
c) Israel has a darn good medical system, and
d) Israelis have learned to build explosion-resistant buildings (there is a government initiative to fund explosive-resistant residences).
The casualty count is low is spite of the fact that Palestinians are doing their level best to kill as many Israeli noncombatants as they can with the best weapons at their disposal, not because of it.

The Palestinians wanted to play the 'war game' in 1948, before Israel occupied a single foot of ground, and they refuse to give it up now. But when you insist on playing war, you make yourself liable to the expected and reasonable consequences: that the enemy you created will fight back. When Palestinians scream in rage because Israel retaliates, I regard it as the petulant whining of egocentric children who refuse to comprehend personal responsibility.

Yes, support Israel's reasonable attempts at self-defense.

To Taft
"I don't know, but I do think its a big mistake to kill so many back."

Every single one of those thousands of rocket/mortar launches is an attempt at mass murder (or an act of war, depending on your view). Israeli casualties have not been as heavy as they might have been for several reasons -- poor tactics and short-ranged, inaccurate weapons on the part of the Palestinians, the relatively great distance to Israel's main population centers, and skillful Israeli civil defense measures. However, none of this makes the Palestinians any less culpable. They are trying their hardest with the materials they have. And acts of war (or efforts at mass murder) clearly justify violent defensive measures.

The object of national defense is to ensure the safety of the nation, NOT to even out the casualties. Should we have allowed the Japanese to kill a few more scores of thousands of Americans so that the casualty figures would be more even?

Consider this: if an armed man broke into my home, started shooting at me and missed the first couple of tries, would I have to let him hit me first before I returned fire with my pistol? No, the mere fact that he was trying to kill me would be sufficient to justify return-fire. Even if he missed me and I killed him, my action would be legitimate self-defense.

Terrorists
I support Israel 100% when you are being attacked by cowards who hide behind women, children and masks so they will not be recognized by their neighbors who may end up killing them. Hamas thinks Israel and Christians are weak and prey on our desire not to kill the innocent. Well Hamas you are wrong again. Collateral damage exists in all wars and only you can be held responsible when you use your families as shields. Well fellow readers here is a choice "Bless (support) Israel and you will be blessed, Curse Israel and you will be cursed. That is straight from the Word of God

Yes, Israel MUST kill the roaches!
Israel MUST kill the Palestinian roaches that are murdering innocent people in Gaza and Israel.
1,571 rockets and 1,531 mortar bombs fired from the Gaza Strip have struck southern Israel since the beginning of the year (Jan-Dec 2008).

Ahmed Yousef, chief political advisor to Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh said, "If the Israelis want our blood, I’m willing to sacrifice my children." (Der Spiegel, 2 Feb 2008)

In its fight to defend itself against Hamas attacks against its civilians, Israel is faced with moral challenges unprecedented in their complexity. Hamas, as a basic element of its strategy, exploits the Palestinian population as shields for its terrorist operations and infrastructure. This cynical strategy include the following tactics:

- The deliberate launching of rocket from populated areas
- The deliberate use of civilian homes to shield Hamas arms and explosives manufacturing facilities
- The deliberate use of civilians as human shields against anticipated airstrikes

The following are but a few of the documented examples of calls in the Hamas controlled Gaza media for Palestinians civilians to serve as human shields:
1) Hamas’s Al-Aqsa TV called upon children to form a human shield at the home of Abu al-Hatal of the a-Shouqaf quarter of Sajaiyeh in order to protect the building from an anticipated IDF airstrike (March 1).

2) Al-Aqsa TV News broadcast a story about how a crowd of civilians gathered on the roof of Abu Bilal al-Ja’abeer in the Northern Gaza strip, in order cause the IDF to abort a threatened airstrike against the structure.

This culture of death must be eradicated once and for all.

These roaches are even here in America using our freedom to advance their hateful agenda of extermination of Jews. They hate Christians, America and the West. Palestinians in America are a danger for our democracy and our way of life.

They are so hateful and disgraced individuals that not even Saudi Arabia wants them!

In Gaza identify who the soldier is
Soldiers should fight soldiers, but when soldiers wears no uniform, it's difficult to say whose the civilian and whose the soldier. Confusion of this sort is done for a reason. It's makes for a better escape if soldiers who do wear uniforms are after you. On the other hand it's bad for the civilian because seeing how no one can be trusted and everyone wears civilians clothes, civilians are bound to get killed in place of fleeing terrorist who use civilians for cover. Bombing Israel should never be seen as just a way of life that Israel has to learn to live with. Sending missiles into Israel might be acceptable to the United Nations and the EU, but not with the Israeli's. When Israel retaliates, it's for good reason. Israel is saying this far and no further. Hamas still hasn't shown the world the death and destruction their capable and for good reason. America supports any nation who wishes to be a free society. If Israel falls due to fear brought on by death and destruction, it won't be long before other free societies fall. If your a nation who sides with Israel, would you speak up. Of course not, if you did you would be next on the list to be attacked by terrorist.

Support Israel?
A resounding, YES!"

They are doing what is right and just to protect their people and in the process they are helping the whole free world by ridding it of cold-blodded killers.

Thanks. How come people like us live in Maryland and have to put up with the idiocy of O'Malley, Mikulski, and Cardin. Is it Gerrymandering?

Genesis 16:12 says nothing of Ishmael "eternally dwelling in the face of his brothers". What it does say is this... regarding Ishmael "He will be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone and everyone's hand against him, and he will live in hostility toward all his brothers."

It simply states that Ishmael, father of the Arab people, will harbor hatred for his brothers and will raise his angry hands against ALL people and everyone will do the same to him. There is NOTHING in this verse to imply that Israel cannot defend itself from this "wild donkey" and certainly nothing that says doing so is akin to "fighting against God". God even says that "everyone's hand will be against him".

Israel is thereby fullfilling the prophecy found here in Genesis 16:12 by raising their hand against the wild donkey!

Hiding among the women?
Just a word on the Palestinian militants operating within civilian areas (aka 'hiding behind women and children').

The Israeli military generally tries to keep its infrastructure and operations distinct from civilian residential areas. This is partly because they don't want civilians getting accidentally killed during possible attacks on Israeli bases, and also to enhance security of their military. Most western nations follow this practice -- see how most U.S. Army bases are kept quite distinct from civilian areas, even when located right beside them.

I'm not sure how far outside civilian settlements the Pal militants *could* get even if they wanted, due to the small size of Gaza. However, it is quite clear that the militants don't *want* to leave civilian settlements. Perhaps because they do seek to 'hide' among the women and children, but more probably, in my view (and in my Iraq/Afghanistan experience), because they are more of a popular militia rather than a formal armed force. They base and operate among the civilian population because they are an inherent part of it. The distinction between 'civilian' and 'fighter' is far less distinct in these regions than Americans assume; the situation much more resembles colonial American history, in which the militia was composed of the mayor, the preacher, the shopkeeper, the day laborer.

This has implications for the wider culpability of Pal civilians for the violence, of course. A militia-type force can ONLY survive through extremely close and willing support, assistance, and encouragement of the civilian population. And the Palestinian civilian population gives the militants all these things.

Just something to think about.

Should We Support Israel? (YES)
I thought this commentary was about the best, most well reasoned and stated I have read on this topic. Bless you, Sir!

NOOO!
Israel's hands are not clean either The culture of death exists on both sides. Who has claim to this barren piece of dirt? None have claim. All have claim. The world stood by out of shame for her part in the murder of millions of Jews and allowed another wrong to take place in Palestine. There will never be peace in this land.
