Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. The true neighbor will risk his position, his prestige, and even his life for the welfare of others. In dangerous valleys and hazardous pathways, he will lift some bruised and beaten brother to a higher and more noble life.”

When Dr. Martin Luther King wrote those stirring words in 1963, he was up to his neck in controversies, struggling to build a movement and gain support for the cause of civil rights. In August that same year, he would lead the now-legendary March on Washington.

When he addressed that crowd of nearly a quarter million men, women, and children from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, Dr. King laid out for all Americans a dream of reconciliation and renewal that would change the conversation about race relations forever. He helped America to understand that reconciliation isn’t about division but addition, and about the process of bringing us together as a nation.

But five years after that heroic event, the man who had done more than any other to bring healing to the wounds that separated blacks and whites, who had proposed a revolutionary vision of nonviolent protest, and who had broken the back of Jim Crow laws in the South, was taken from us at the height of his powers. The irony of his death—that a man so full of charity and compassion for others would be felled by an assassin’s bullet—wounded us all. Yet, his dream did not die. The dream grew larger, and Dr. King became larger than life—such things often happen with prophets. But it didn’t stop there, for we’re all his descendants –whether black or white, Christian, Muslim, or Jew.

One of the best commentaries on race to occur recently was a discussion entitled "Race and the New Congress" held at Williams College in Massachusetts just under two weeks after the election. On November 17, 2008, Leslie Stahl from 60 Minutes served as a moderator for a town hall style meeting that included nine members of the Black Congressional Caucus.

Before I discuss the important thoughts shared in the discussion, I need to share my biases. First of all, I have often found myself at odds with the Caucus - their policies, practices, and choices. Despite my philosophical differences with them as a group, they understand the politics and race nexus better than any group of people in the nation.

Secondly, I have long standing ties to Williams College (my undergraduate alma mater and the alma mater of both my daughters). My pro-Williams attitude led me to listen intently to the discussion and helped me find the nuggets of truth within the event.

Stahl began the discussion in a cheery, upbeat manner and quickly coaxed the panel to share very deep feelings concerning the presidential election and their task of working in the legislative branch of government during President-elect Obama’s first term. Several of them admitted that they secretly doubted that America was ready for a black president. Corporately, they agreed that Obama’s decisive victory marks the beginning of a new era in politics and race relations. The first question from the audience came from Governor Deval Patrick. He postulated that there is unfinished legislative business that still needs to be done around race.

Unfortunately, they unanimously declared that we have not entered into a “post racial” age. In fact, many of the problems the nation will attempt to solve in the next few years have racial implications. This does not mean that the nation has not made progress, but rather we will have to work through some tough issues to achieve a greater union.

For example, the panel pointed out that America has the highest percentage of imprisoned citizens in the developed world. Many of those prisoners are black and Hispanics. Next, the panel pointed out that the problem of illegal immigration has the potential to raise the specter of strained relations between black and white, Hispanic and black, and Asians vs. other groups.

Black and Hispanic unemployment levels are much higher than those of most Americans. Solutions to the healthcare dilemma that we face will be impacted the staggering disparity in the health based on race. Consider these facts: Blacks face twice the number of infant mortalities, 10 times the frequency of contracting HIV/AIDS, needing more hospitalization and requiring a greater number of amputations than their white counterparts.

The panel went as far as to allude to the fact that national solutions to our energy problems will also have racial and ethnic ramifications. I have discovered that soaring energy costs will affect the last and the least in the nation. People at the poverty line spend as much as 50% of their income on energy costs (including transportation). The race-based achievement gap in education, affirmative action, and systemic issues were also addressed by questions from the audience.

The tone of this discussion was very positive. The Caucus will encourage our next president to be a centrist that leads from the center. In this results-seeking, political environment, conservative Christians have the greatest potential of building bridges and creating new coalitions. Let’s all believe that the faith community will shed its image of contention, becoming the nation’s newest cultural “super glue.”

Building Bridges
It is way beyond the time for the Christian Community to build bridges within the church and outside it walls. We have gone too long dividing the house of God among color lines. The white church, the black church, Hispanic church, etc., we need to be the church and show that race does not matter.

Here it comes!!
Get ready Pro!! The perpetually offended whack jobs will soon be demanding that you be tarred and feathered. THEY CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!! As Col. Jessup would say.

Racism
IMHO... the worst racist many blacks see is the one in the mirror... I know there are hateful types everywhere, of all colors.

So we aren't "Christians"?
According to Iam, we're not. Well, Iam, aren't you just a little gatekeeper for God!

As far as "Christian", I fully believe that black churchs are gross and complete failures. Blacks have their loud and boistrous reverends in shiney suits who pack in the folks, but as far as effectiveness, they're completely useless in at stopping violence, crime and government dependency among their fellow blacks. Some actually encourage it when they make excuses and displace responsibility for the mayhem. See also "reverend" Wright.

Detroit, a "chocolate" city for over now 40 years, is now fundamentally third world, and there's a church on nearly every corner. One would think that with so much Christianity in one area, the place would be peaceful, clean and serene, but instead, the local citizenry have startle responses of a combat veterans, and welfare and crime is a way of life.

Blacks my praise God at their churches, but their true prophets, as they see them, hangout in government offices in Washington D.C.

Iam, you're the last person in the world who is qualified to help God out. When you and yours stop having to step over the bodies of the latest drive-bys, then you might have substance to your positions. Until then, thank HIM that you live in a country that rewards blacks with unearned advancements unknown the world over. Another way put; You're in no position to grip or point fingers. Get honest and grow up.

Iam's "shocking" experience
So another conversation is supposed to end due to Iam's shouts of "racism!" and "hatred!".

Sorry, Iam, but I'm not running for office, I'm not politically correct, nor do I feel one trace of white guilt. There hasn't been one bit of hate printed on this thread as yet. Only descriptions, experiences, and observations about the reverend's topic have been posted.

Coming from a low income blue collar family, I've never discriminated against a black person in my life nor have I ever owned a slave. I have worked for everything I have, as have every one of my friends and family. I merely followed the rules of my culture and those of my family.

Along the way in life, there has always been someone in power who has stood in the way to tell me "no", to tell me that I wasn't qualified for whatever, even when I was, or who simply rejected me due to my gender and race.

But life isn't fair, and I moved on and up in spite of them.

Therein is the reason I have a problem with whiny adults with actual lobbyists who are capable of doing for themselves, and this construct is epidemic among blacks. That our government rewards the whining, chronic failure, violence, and sloth is what really grates, however.

Btw, Iam. NEVER take an anthropology class. The students in those classes research, investigate and describe a culture's power structures, values and rules. Because of your failure to discriminate crucial differences, such a program would only further destabilize you.

Iam,
I think you are mistaken.

Any hatred and any discrimination is not so much about race as it is about the dysfunctional, "gansta" culture embraced by a large proportion of blacks (and a sizeable number of hispanics and whites as well).

I am not the least bit ashamed to say that I discriminate against thugs, sluts, and people who present themselves as wannabe thugs and wannabe sluts.

But I don't think that there is any genetic necessity that imposes thughood and slutdom on people and that such dysfunctional choices are entirely the responsibility of INDIVIDUAL PEOPLE with no relation whatsoever to the melanin content of their skin.

That said, a large and noisy segment of black Americans have embraces the dysfunctional "gansta" culture and all reasoning people of all races should speak out about the ills of that culture. I'm not holding my breath, but I would like to be able to think that Barrack Obama would use his position to promote the middle-class values of education, work, family, and self-motivation that took him to the White House instead of drugs, dependency, welfare, and the abandonment of parental responsibility which is the woeful face of urban black America today.

Iam- OK
Subject: Denise:
I'm sorry, Denise--I should have excepted you, too. Your point about Dollar Bill is well-taken and valid, and your post is indeed not racist.
My bad.

That being said, the overt racism and hatred on this thread is still shocking. And it shows that there are plenty of people who will hate blacks no matter what--and where there is hate there is discrimination.

Iam, thanks. I only ask you to remember that racism exists across the spectrum. The same thing goes for discrimination. The problem with both is that it seems to divide us into sub-sets, even when we may be on the same side. An illustration of this occurred recently in your own state when gay activists turned on their black members and hurled the N-word at them. I consider that example shocking and shameful even if I disagree with gay marriages, which I do, primarily as a lawyer, because I am unsure of where the "discrimination" would end if the definition of marriage was changed, i.e., Do polygamists get to have more than one spouse?, Do Muslim men, that want them, get 72 virgins? Do people, who want to marry cartoon characters like their counterparts in Japan, get to marry Mickey Mouse, et al? Or, if you want to push the definition to the extreme, should my neighbor, who already loves my car, get to decide that he wants to marry it and then tell me when I can drive his spouse? . :)

I don't "hate" anyone. Well, I suppose that is not exactly true, in that, I hate those, who kill innocents, like the Mumbai terrorists.

Denise:

Iam: Shocked? Really?
"Given all your hatred here, do you think blacks are NOT discriminated against? Just look at yourselves....and shame on you all."

I will tell you that I have never discriminated against anyone or even used a racial epithet.

The points made by many here are not hateful, but the reality of the "so-called" Post-Racial Era. If you look at my comments relative to my own Congressman in New Orleans, I hope that you can understand why many of us believe that most African-Americans are not served by merely voting in their fellow African-Americans. I know this to be the case with regard to Dollar Bill Jefferson, who has never helped anyone in this community, but has done a mighty fine job in helping himself to everything he can get his hands on.

The African-Americans in my community have not been serviced well by any of our African-American politicians, whether it was the Morials of old or Mayor Ray Nagin or Congressman Jefferson. Schools remain crumbling. Unemployment has always been high among African-Americans here even when our politicians were black. Crime, especially black-on-black crime, is off the charts.

This is the truth and it doesn't, nor can it ever, make me racist or shameful, unless you believe that my African-American friends are racist, shameful and hateful in agreeing with most of the comments made here.

What is shameful and shocking is that you fail to recognize the truth about the state of the African-American or even other poor communities. I want ALL Americans to succeed and I want those in government to stop worrying about re-elections and their own monetary futures, and work, instead, on behalf of allowing Americans to have the opportunities of life, liberty and the PURSUIT of happiness.

Shocking....
I kept reading, and reading--all the way to the end of the posts here--and with the exception of Mother of 4 in NC, not 1 person here decried the shameful and shocking (and blatant) racism displayed by you knuckle draggers.

SHAME ON YOU.
You aren't Christians.

Don't you see the irony? You all bleat and moan about how blacks complain about discrimination--and yet this whole thread is filled with hatred...and some of you cretins even believe blacks are inherently inferior.

Given all your hatred here, do you think blacks are NOT discriminated against? Just look at yourselves....and shame on you all.

Post Racial Era has not come...
At least, it has not come to many urban areas. Look at the recent election where my stupid Congressman, Dollar Bill Jefferson, made it into a run-off with an Asian-American Republican.

For those of you, who do not know, Jefferson is the eight term, indicted Congressman that represents New Orleans. He was indicted after the Feds found $90,000 in marked bills (used to bribe him) in an Eggo Waffle container in his freezer. Now, I, of course, know that he is innocent until proven guilty, but that does not mean he is ENTITLED to a congressional seat. We vote people out of office for many reasons and indictments are only of those.

The problem with those, who voted to send Jefferson into a run-off, is that, for the most part, they were African-Americans. These same people, unfortunately, have never benefitted from having Jefferson in Congress. In voting for him because he is the African-American on the ballot, his voters have voted against their own self-interests.

The "Post-Racial Era" may come, but it will not until everyone votes based on the "content of character" and political ideology and leaves "color of skin" out of it. Once, Americans are able to forget about race, we will see an era of post-racism, but, if Americans continue to vote against their own self interests merely because they are voting in solidarity with their own skin color, this "era" is a long way off.

The military establishment....
....provides one of the best examples of black self-destructive pathologies.

Consider that in the military, everything is provided to include food, medical treatment, clothing, and housing. You can use your pay for anything you want. All a serviceman or woman has to do is show up every day and do their job, but such is just too much for many blacks.

Brigs and stockades, the names for military jails, are overwhelmingly populated by blacks, and they always have been. This, in spite of being provided with absolutely everything for daily living.

The choice to do bad, to commit crimes, and to prey on others will always be considered an option for many black men and women. Until that problem is addressed, there will be no "change".

Opportunity for America
I pray that our beloved country, the best country the world has ever produced, would finally stop being divided by anything except the innate differences that drive each of to succeed.
The opportunity for success and riches are available to all of us but so many do not accept the opportunity and fall victim to the media and liberal viewpoint that America has held them back.
I have worked for several large corporations who have tried to start new ventures for blacks in Detroit, Toledo and Louisiana all of which failed because the opportunity given was not carried forward by the recipients.
I deliver Meals On Wheels in our area and as I drive by I see many black young men and women wandering around mid-day doing nothing when jobs have been plentiful they did not take the opportunity to begin to succeed.
The government handouts have ruined many people. We must face that fact opportunity is here for everyone and it must be taken by each individual without excuses.

Greed
The empowerment of the Civil Rights movement can be summed up in one word; GREED! When a US Congressman gets a standing ovation for violating the law, is proclaimed a Patriot and supporter of Civil Rights, what happened to the rights of the white man, or the indian man, or did I mention the Mexican man? Civil Rights should be color blind! As for Honor, Integrity, even Honesty as criteria for the selection and election of our next President, judge for yourself, history will establish the facts!

Answers to the problems...
...in the so-called "black community" have been provided by the likes of Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams, Star Parker, and Larry Elder. Brilliant and successful people all, and viciously rejected by black people in general.

No sir, Reverend Jackson. Blacks want more government, and they want to be parented for by same. Over 95% of black voters have said just that at the last election.

And remember the words of the black lady at a Dem convention, Peggy the Parasite; "Barak is gonna pay my house note, and give me gas for my car!" That's the "thinking" of most blacks today.

It will never happen, Reverend.
The very sad and tragic truth is that there is not a place on this planet where blacks have settled peacefully.

Mindless tribalism, a wholesale rejection of personal responsibility, blaming, demanding from others, daily mental baths in resentment, and, dare I say, genetics, are but some of the factors that will always keep blacks "in their place", and under fire in their neighborhoods.

If you carry a baby around during its early years of growth, never letting its feet hit the ground, and never allowing it to take the usual bumps and falls, it never develops the muscles to finally walk on its own. Their leg muscles atrophy. Such is the story of blacks in America today.

The govenment and (especially) black race hustlers will never allow their "children" to develop their own leg muscles. Toxic tribalism forbids it, and personal fortunes gained from their exploitation will end.

The more government entitlements, set-asides and preferences, the more blacks will sink into the abyss of crime and decay.

More meetings, favorable legislation, handouts, preferences, entitlements, and .....more happy racial get-togethers will only open the door to more decay in the black communities. But the race hustlers and liberal government prophets want more, as do their serfs.

Change in the black community? Not a chance.

The Color of Race
When President Barack Obama campaigned he was considered an African American, what an insult! People talk of Civil Rights, yet speak continually about their ethnic background or color of their skin! Neither has a thing to do with Civil Rights! Media Grow Up, you elected a candidate with a proven record of integrity, honor or respect, rather you elected to support the ethnic background, what ever that is, and the color of a man's skin! My name is Gerald Cleverley and I approve of this message.

Post Racial Society
I thought our post racial society began in 1966 when as an apprentice I welcomed and worked along side the first black men admitted to the program. Little did I know that 42 years latter I would hear Rev. Wright say the things he did. I'm disappointed and awakened to the fact that you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.

Race? or Culture?
But what does RACE have to do with any of those problems?

There's nothing coded in anyone's DNA that requires them to adopt the thuggish "gansta" culture that elevates irresponsibility, predation on society, and a parasitic dependence on welfare.

As Walter Williams says, its not hard to escape poverty -- if you are willing to take responsibility for your own life.

http://www.capmag.com/article.asp?ID=4223

"Avoiding long-term poverty is not rocket science. First, graduate from high school. Second, get married before you have children, and stay married. Third, work at any kind of job, even one that starts out paying the minimum wage. And, finally, avoid engaging in criminal behavior."

Thank God you are leaving
Emmett if you can say it is black peoples fault this country is going down its good you are on your wayb out. To say whites will be enslaved by blacks is crazy. White have had control and we see where it leads, greed. Black people did not let 12-20 million hispanics in this country trying to get cheap labor whites did. To say blacks do not want to be educated you must be with the KKK. To generalize a group like that. Hope you have a good trip.

Thank God I am in my late seventies
I fear for young whites. In 20 years will be enslaved by their black counterparts. The Government employment is attaining high percentages in black employment. Twenty years from now white males will be in the same position as blacks in employment and this will lead to the same situation the black male has established. The big difference is whites have a desire to be educated but all employment or lack of it will come from the private sector. This has not been the case until recent years.

Just Look at Jackson's List

At the end of 4 or 8 years there will be no change.

And everyone knows why.

Reality
Yes it's true King did have a few controversies, 1 which was cheating on his with peroxide blonde prostitutes. It's also true that blacks & latinos R incarcerated in higher numbers, but that's because they (especially blacks) R more violent & crime prone. Also, whites, indians and asians have higher employment ratings because these groups R better educated, have more respect for hard work and takr personal responsibility for their lives. As far as having a equal say inthis country, shouldn't blacks take equal responsibility.

The dis·par·i·ty.........
It seems to most of us who view the black communities problems from the outside; that the very first thing that MUST happen first is for Black Men not have their children out of wedlock. If the statistics are correct, 70% of all black babies will be born out of wedlock and be raised by a single mother who will be forced to live in poverty. That child will be surrounded by crime most of his or her life, not be going to a good public school, will drop out by a rate of about 55% in most intercity areas and most likely get into criminal activities themselves. How can White people affect that situation??? Who in the ghetto wants to listen to any of us preaching to them about their problems. Black leaders must do it. Black men have to take responsibility for this endless loop of their women in poverty and the failure to raise a generation that can support themselves and contribute to this "united" country. Liberal politics has been the worst thing that ever happened to the Black communities around the country. It supported their failures and shortcomings. It in effect crippled a whole race of people who waited for what they felt they were entitled too....OWED!!!! Collectively the blacks voted for liberals time and time again.....each time becoming worse and worse off. You want real "CHANGE" .....start with changing that. Vote for a Conservative for once, the party that offers all of us the Opportunity to do well....not for a very MEAGER free ride that the liberals promise your people each and every time. It has not served them well. In fact; it has truly hurt the black race. Then Black Men must stand up and be men....support your women and the babies they give you. Otherwise; nothing will get better, how else can any of this be "changed?" L

End of Racial Era?? Are U Kiddin????
How in the world can U even speak on that subject at the same time as putting forth the "Black Caucus" and black infant mortality rates..Some of those speaking of infant mortality rates don't seem so concerned about rampant teen-age abortioN...sTILL WORK TO DO!!

20 years ago maybe
20 years ago, political correctness was not so strong that you could actually suggest that all people deserved to be treated based upon individual merit. That is no longer the case.
To me, it really is amazing that we can have a guy with white slaveholding ancestors (Obama) who had no American slaves as ancestors deign to "lecture" us "typical white people" about racism. Anti-white bigotry is so entrenched in Universities and government that it simply will not end any time soon. "Diversity" treating people based upon skin color has become so accepted that I cannot imagine it ending anytime soon. Affirmative Action and political correctness are nothing less than premised on slanders and lies about "group white guilt." My ancestry is what it is -- it did not include American slaveholders -- or even anyone from the South.

Black or White - get over it!
The solution to racial tension or issues is to just - get over it! Race baiting hacks will never be satisfied. You could ammend the consitution to allow Hussein two terms and they would still give you instances of racial inequality. When we feed into this sickness, we make the beast of race bigger than he needs to be. Forgitaboutit! If you are a hardworking american, regardless of race, you can make your life successful. For race obsessed individuals nothing will work well until blacks enslave whites as payback for those days, and for whites - until all blacks crawl back to the back of the bus. These two extremes need to be ignored so that the sane people can continue living their lives. Anyone 45 and under does not have experience of 'major' racial discrimation, so it's time to turn the page and move on to the future of less race baiting. if your life is not what it needs to be - nobody cares but yourself so get over it and change it. Obama is not anyone's hope (sorry husseinvile merchants) and Bush was not the second coming either (sorry GOP pandits). This is america and at the top congress and the executive branch occupants care only about those who funded their campaigns and now add to that list future funders (corporations). Americans are just voters who get them where they need to be.

A post racial era would be nice.
Unfortunately, I fear that the Obama administration will set this country back decades in race relations.

I hope I'm wrong

If Obama turns extreme leftist, this glue will lose its holding power...I'm curious to see if a BLACK President will be any BETTER than a WHITE President....we will see.

I recall Dr. King quite well...and 1968 was a very BAD year needless to say.....

What I've found over time is how many WHITES often quote him.....MLK had character, and many WHITES seen that clearly, but hardly in MY experience do I hear it (quotes) from any blacks, especially in the streets of everyday life.

Ethnicity and Power
The most successful ethnic group in the US, by income, or lack of suffering from various other social ills, is the Japanese Americans. Japanese Americans have never held political power, have never sought political power.

The Japanese Americans are the survivors of one of the most appalling and more recent acts of discrimination during WWII, only 66 years removed from Pres. Roosevelt's EC 9066.

Japanese Americans have:

- Median family income: $62,446 ($51k for whites)
- Median household income: $40,842
- Per capital Income: $27,641
- Median full-time male earnings: $53,865
- Median full-time female earnings: $30,898

AFFIRMATIVE ACTION SHOULD DIE
DIVERSITY FINEST HOUR SHOULD BE JANUARY 20, 2009
WHEN BARACK HUSSIN OBAMA TAKES HIS OATH OF OFFICE TO BECOME THE FORTY-FORTH PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. BUT IN REALITY IT IS THE OPENING FOR AN INCREASE OF SOCIAL PROGRAMS TO FUTHER OPPRESS AND CREATE NEW GOVERNMENT DEPENDENTS. BAILOUTS, STIMULUS CHECKS, HAVE MORE AMERICANS SEEKING CHECKS FROM THE GOVERNMENT.
