Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

On the night of the Iowa Caucus, George F. Will, syndicated columnist, appeared on CNN, stating that AL Sharpton and Jessie Jackson were the biggest losers in Iowa. Will and others were remarking that the Obama campaign signals the end of purely race-based politics. I was shocked by the boldness of the statement. Will seemed to believe that the days of black candidates only receiving votes from other blacks is over. As a mainstream white, political commentator, his words seemed to confirm the hopes of many blacks - both liberal and conservative.

If this assertion is true, we may be partially realizing one political aspect of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s dream. The New Hampshire Primary will undoubtedly give a similar message to Iowa’s. Therefore, we may be poised to transition into a deeper phase of racial reconciliation. Let’s hope so.

One of the questions I have asked myself is whether the Obama phenomenon has more to do with the uniqueness of the man rather than signaling a major social transition. The greatest power of Obama’s candidacy may be symbolic. He and his family look like the fictional Huckstable family that Bill Cosby created decades ago. They don’t have to win in order to change the nation. They simply have to run well.

To prove my point, let me cite a recent event in pop cultural history. The day after the Caucus, Al Sharpton appeared on Jay Leno, surprisingly extolling Obama’s virtue and wisdom. What a contrast the Leno interview was compared to his disparaging comments just a few months ago. He and Jesse Jackson had conducted a tag team assault on the Senator. Jesse even went so far as to rail on the Senator in a major press conference. As a result, the nation was awash with commentary about the “civil rights warhorse’s” declaration that Senator Barak Obama was “being too white” as it pertained to the Jena 6 problem in Louisiana.

Why was Jackson so upset with Obama? The answer is quite simple. It was an expression of a sophisticated turf war for the ideological leadership of the black community.

Perhaps the root of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton’s problems lie in their leadership concepts and philosophy. Shelby Steele, a conservative black writer, has postulated that whenever leading blacks seem too much like unifiers or “bargainers,” they are held suspect by the majority of the traditional black community. By contrast, “challengers” like Jackson and Sharpton have historically been deemed “true blue” by the black masses. Dr. Steele lays out his assessment of Obama in a thought provoking work titled A Bound Man: Why We Are Excited About Obama and Why He Can't Win.

This paradigm also explains the skepticism many blacks have had concerning Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice. These attractive “bargainers” seem to have failed to have their “black membership card” validated.

If black politicians are combative champions of black rights, whites are often intimidated. Therefore in the average black political campaign, there is a potential problem of alienation or polarization. If whites accept them, blacks will often withdraw. Conversely, if these candidates champion every black issue, they quickly will be seen as too radical. Potential groundbreaking leaders often draw back into a political safety zone which is dominated by the ideology of Sharpton, Jackson, and others.

Last November, the Pew Research Group released a groundbreaking study which suggested that blacks self identify as being part of one of two different black Americas. Let me translate the Pew findings into Steele’s language. The first black America is an impoverished group that responds to the leadership of “challengers.” They are the poor - the have nots. The second group is the aspiring black middle class which holds fast to the ideals of hard work and upward mobility through education. They respond best to leaders who would be dubbed as “bargainers.”

Pew Research confirmed what savvy black Americans already knew about their community. This division is firmly entrenched in the black community. Obama may actually be one of the first black politicians to break out of this sociological death grip. His appeal to upwardly mobile whites in Iowa and New Hampshire is consistent with this analysis. As he rises to even greater national visibility, more black voters may now embrace him on the grounds of simple racial pride. After all, he has the potential to go further than any of the previous black presidential candidates: Carol Mosley Braun, Shirley Chisholm, Jesse Jackson, Allen Keyes, or Al Sharpton.

Obama will no doubt remain a cultural icon for years to come, regardless of the outcome of the race. Many conservative blacks have seen the Democratic Party as a political plantation which only oppresses or uses black voters without offering leadership opportunities. In fairness to the Democratic machine, they have made major strides by supporting Obama’s run for office. In contrast, the Republican movement has not been as successful in bridging the racial divide.

Let me give you an example from the two convention speeches given by major black leaders in 2004. Obama spoke eloquently for the Democratic Party, while Michael Steele carried the water for the Republicans. There are many similarities between the two men. Both are extremely articulate and intelligent. Both received law degrees from one of America’s top schools. Both are unifiers and “bargainers.” As a result, they were both hailed as prototypical black candidates for their respective parties, yet the last four years have treated them very differently. Obama is breaking political records, while Michael Steele is not currently serving in an elected capacity.

To conclude, I agree with George F. Will’s post-caucus statement that Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton were the biggest losers of the Iowa Caucus and the New Hampshire primary race. Although they were not on the ballot in either location, their “concepts” about American politics were analyzed, tested and defeated. Thankfully, we have taken another important step toward healing America’s racial divide.

Jesse Jackson & Al Sharpton
The assassinations of both Martin Luther King and Malcolm X were disasters for the black community. I fear now for Obama's life, (probably at the hands of a white person), not least because it will leave and further entrench "black leadership" in the hands of these and other fraudulent race hustlers. Who have only compounded, and continue to compound, the disastrous course for too many blacks of too much of black family and culture over the last 40 years.

If Obama lives, and particularly if he wins the nomination and presidency, then Harry Jackson Jr. and George Will may very well be correct and there may indeed be hope to begin to reverse the results of disastrously ineffective, counterproductive and/or non-existent black leadership.

Sharpton and Jackson
If Obama wins the white house, won't this put the race baiters out of business

Who cares
Who gives a flying flip what these SELF appointed "Black" leaders think.

Just remember Sharpton can to power on a lie that he has NEVER appologized for.

Jesse and Al
will be considered "Leaders" despite the absence of followers.

Apples and Oranges
Harry Jackson wrote, "Obama spoke eloquently for the Democratic Party, while Michael Steele carried the water for the Republicans."

Does that mean that Republicans, or Michael Steele in particular, are not eloquent or is Obama also "carrying water" for the democrats.

Mr. Jackson is confounding style and substance. I'd rather hear a poorly articulated conservative viewpoint over an elegant liberal viewpoint, but I would not choose one viewpoint over the other merely on the eloquence of the communicator.

Robert E Lee

Translation: everyone must vote for Obama to prove these things. May I remind the managers of this site that Town Hall is by, of, and for CONSERVATIVES. Obama keyster-kissing pieces like this column belong on Moveon!

Take your drivel and YOU move on.

This IS a conservative article. Its main point is the (hopeful) demise of Rev. Al, Jesse J, etc.

Did you watch the NH Democratic debate? Obama HAS substance. OK, it leans way too far left. But compared to H.C. and J.E.? On substance Obama wiped the floor with them (of course, the latter requires little talent or ability, just hair).

Is that a whiff of Envy?
"Obama spoke eloquently for the Democratic Party, while Michael Steele carried the water for the Republicans."

Wat a completely idiotic thing to say. Obama prattled on about the plans the Democrats have for America as if their socialist leanings were somehow news. Steele prattled on about the plans the Republicans have for America, as if their conservative talk was still believable. That's all we got. The eloquence is in Mr. Jackson's mind.

Bigest Losers
I must disagree. Michael Steele showed that blacks will only vote for blacks who are running as Democrats. Note that there is no reference to Justice Thomas, who should be acknowledged as a true leader who happens to be black, but who is not accepted by the so-called black leadership.

No.

The real disasters for the black community were the rise of Rev. Al, and Jesse J.

And to Mrs. King who just stopped talking to him, but should have called Jesse on his lie that "he held the dying man in his arms" and using it to propel himself into a spot he did not deserve.

In fact, since a prior assassination gave them so much personal advancement, if O. needs to fear anyone it would be the Rev Als and the Jesse Js.

For itcanbedone @ 12:40
Nope.

Take a look at US' northern neighbour Canada. One province, Quebec, shills about "discrimination" against it.

From Quebec, the following PM's came:
(1) Wilfrid Laurier, 1896-1911
(2) Louis St. Laurent, 1948-1957
(3) Pierre Elliot Trudeau, 1968-1979/1980-1984 (for all-and-practical, I could say 1968-1984)
(4) Brian Mulroney (1984-1993--not of French origin, but still born in Quebec)
(5) Jean Chretien, 1993-2003
(6) Paul Martin, 2004-2006

Additionally, Quebec nearly got four-in-a-row (as Trudeau and Mulroney both resigned and designated "hapless fall-take losers" who were NOT from Quebec, it is "almost").

It would be naive to assume that Jesse and Al are not aware of the above model--and even more so to assume that they won't use it.

if obama wins the pres. it will be a disaster for all america. i heard him talking this morning in nh. he actually said he could unite america. what a joke. what does he bring to the table that bush doesn't. bush wants to unite the country but the dems won't hear of it. they want power, and thats all. so don't count on me to break bread with the likes of obama.

Sagredo @ 14:51 writes
"But compared to H.C. and J.E.? On substance Obama wiped the floor with them (of course, the latter requires little talent or ability, just hair)".

Does it even require that? LOL!

Bush kept Tenet at the CIA
and Mineta at Transportation in the name of bi-partisanship, two Dems. that ended up hurting the entire US. Tenet said invading Iraq was a slam dunk, and Mineta invented the airport security that harasses grandmothers and ignores young Middle Eastern males.

Barak plans military humiliatuion in the Middle East (immediate withdrawal--even Hillary has recognized that is not possible); higher taxes (just ending the Bush tax cuts could be $2500 a taxpayer); and what other plan of any kind has he actually offered, save uniting everyone and making everyone happy?

He's dyed-in-the-wool leftist whacko with no exp. and an iffy Muslim youth in Indonesia and member of a racist black church.

If he ends the Jackson-Sharpton race-hustler era, I will rejoice. But as long as the MSM calls them "leaders of the black community," we're stuck with them.

We are not nec. stuck with Obama who has a ways to go to get to be pres. (Of course if he got the nom. and lost, we'd all be racists. But you know what? At this pt. the libs. have thrown around so many epithets for so long, they barely register with me at all.)

Accolades for both.........
gentlemen. Unfortunately, both men are social liberals and the 2008 POTUS nomination is at the culmination of the culture wars. This is a fight for the federal appellate and the SCOTUS. Now is not the time to capitulate to the liberal, aka "moderates", members of the Democrat or Republican Parties.

On "black rights"
"If black politicians are combative champions of black rights, whites are often intimidated," according to the author.

Let me tell you something about the so-called black rights, and why so many non-blacks oppose them. Rather than promoting ideas and concepts that benefit all people, including blacks, their leadership (both elected and self appointed) advocate for payoffs from the rest of society.

The surest way for any aspiring black politician or national leader to derail their ambitions is to advocate for things that do not benefit blacks solely.

Obama? Substance?
I'm sorry, the word is called Charisma. Obama is attractive, charming, and people are drawn to him. If Snoop Dog got up on stage and read Obama's script, you would all think (and probably do right now) that Snoop Dog is an idiot speaking drivel.

I live in Illinois, and what substance has Obama brought to my state during the what? Three or so years he's been elected? Nothing but raise our taxes. Illinois is the most corrupt political state around and he's done nothing to make those glorious "changes for the better" he blathers on about. What changes? Where?

He is not my first choice for a candidate, but at least Rudy G has completely made NYC over from a cesspool to a decent place to be while lowering taxes. Rudy has made change for the better. Before 911, Rudy made a difference and after 911, he did it again.

Obama is an empty suit. He recites wonderful inspiring talk for a kiddie soccer team, but in reality, he has nothing, said nothing, done nothing, to show what change he speaks of.

Wake up. Wake up.

Barak Obama
The seemingly invincible world of racist

ideology of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton

has been exposed for what it is, and laid to

rest by Barak Obama,

Jackson,Sharpton & The Clinton's have become

irrelevant.

Thank You State of Iowa & Congratulations

Barak Obama

What if Obama Loses?
Consider for a moment, Mr. Jackson, where you will stand should Obama lose the nomination race.

Would you then posit that it is true that white Democrats will not vote for a black man for president?

Sharton and Jackson
are chasing the bucks, preaching to the choir. There are some high profile rightwing authors/pundits cashing in too. Nothing inherently wrong with it. Just what tactics and demagogery are used do tend to be a measure of character and motive. When they perceived their usual black audience in the mood to lump BHO with Condi, Thomas and other prominent and successful blacks, they naturally painted him an establishment uncle tom. But the country and events left them on the fringe, so they immediately retuned themselves and now are "leading" the choir again. Or is it they just "lead" them to where they already are?

This whole black/white for pres is

stupid.

I can easily name several black men, and even a black women or two, for whom I'd vote should they run... And I sure every other intelligent person could do the same.. although their "list" may not match mine.. That's okay.

It's about idiology, character, experience and qualifications.

Unfortunately we have enough issues involving race (ie Duke Lacrosse case, and Jackson and Sharpton, etc) that we don't need to be manufacturing them..

Blacks are generally killed by blacks
While it appeals to stereotypes that a white racist would assassinate a successful black politician, the odds are against it. Blacks kill blacks in almost all murders of blacks in the USA.

Lost in Paradise
Statistically you are correct, but statistics are not the whole story. I heard of a man who drowned in a river that averaged an inch deep. More useful in BHO's case would be the application of CUI Bono, which i am told means Who Benefits in Latin. Or maybe go French and Chercez la Femme, which translates to Seek the woman. Please, nobody laugh at my spelling or translations. I'm doing the best i can.

btw
did you hear obama attends a racist church. really shows his christian values, huh. and why is this ok. if a repub was doing this can you imagine the outcry from the old media.

sharpton and jackson
With the help of the media both sharpton and jackson are still held in positions of reverence by the msm. But what of their message of white racism and lack of opportunity for blacks overall. Until a new message of hope and opportunity emerges little will change. Perhaps obahma might be a catalyst for change. But it is to early to know if he can be effective in this regard. As long as blacks as a group continue to see themselves as victims, little progress will be seen. White libs seem to think that an oblahma victory will lead to racial healing. Others predict more racial divison and a new level of arrogance as the dims favorite victim group will now make increased demands and push for unrealistic amends such as reparation payments. There is no way anyone can predict with any accuracy what effect a black president will make. In spite of his charisma obahma lacks real legislative experience and has a voting record even more lib than the missus clinton and has in fact been no more than than harry reids willing follower in the senate

Shells, thanks for the Rudy
comments.

He took NYC, called ungovernable by the experts who now try to denigrate what he accomplished, and lowered taxes 20%, moved 640,000 off welfare onto workfare (cutting welfare nearly in half), moved the homeless into shelters, and made the streets and parks of NYC civil again.

He brought in revenues, kept businesses from any further export, and also kept the city pop. from further decreases. All that Bloomberg triumphs today actually comes from Giuliani. We should always remember that when the MSM covers Rudy, they still hate him for taking their hookers and drug dealers off 42nd St.

Barack Obama is a 2-term IL state leg., with an unfinished US senate tenure in which he has done nothing and missed nearly all votes while he's campaigning. If he were white, he wouldn't be running.

Romney and Huckabee would turn a pres. race into a conflict over religion. Hillary wants to turn the US into Sweden. Edwards is a multi-millionaire pretending to be one of the people, and Ron Paul wants miltiary diseaster in the Mid East and then use troops illegally to man the southern border. McCain is my second choice, but I didn't like his opposing the 2003 tax cuts and his role in the judicial nominees.

I see Rudy as the ONLY real candidate among the bunch.

CUI Bono?
No one benefits if Obama is assassinated, much like the senselessness of most of the black-on-black murders in this country. There is no cause-and-effect for black-on-black violence, they just murder each other a lot.

Stupid
I see human beings not color.

Jimmy @ 18:26 yesterday wrote
"The seemingly invincible world of racist ideology of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton has been exposed for what it is, and laid to rest by Barak Obama".

Nope--it will achieve GREATER prominence if Obama becomes POTUS (see my earlier post about Canada--to add, Quebecois complaints on discrimination actually seem to INCREASE when one of their own occupies 24 Sussex Dr).

Lost-in-Paradise @ 01:28, have you seen any non-groat on TH ever accusing Hellary of being sensible?

Anne @ 19:00 yesterday wrote
"Unfortunately we have enough issues involving race (ie Duke Lacrosse case, and Jackson and Sharpton, etc) that we don't need to be manufacturing them".

Eh, have you actually seen Sharpton or Jackson FAIL to manufacture race-related connexions? They've been using the Quebecois model practically from ordination.

my 2 cents
Martin Luther King Jr. said "I have a dream that the day will come when my children will be judged by the content of their character rather than on the color of their skin." (Not exact quote)

For those with the character to embrace it that day came long ago. I'm not fond of Obama but I do include him among those people.

Those withOUT know who they are and they are desperately holding on to the only card they have left to play. They will be gone in their time and there will be (hopefully) no one to pick up their soiled and ragged banner and it will be left to drift off in the wind.

Renny
I wish more people would realize Rudy's triumphs too. He may be a social liberal in some ways, however, perhaps that would be a bonus rather than a negative. He wouldn't be for social programs that we get taxed over and over again from, but at least he wouldn't exclude and demonize people that some conservative supporters wish we would.

He would be the one person to turn this country around and make it better.

Obama is simply hype. Everyone coo's his call for change. What change? He hasn't said exactly how and what that will be. He never made a change in Illinois, and we suffer here. This is the most racist, corrupt and heavily taxed state. Why aren't people talking about this? My property taxes nearly tripled, and this year our state taxes go up 17%. This is Obama's state. Where is this money going to and where are those changes for the better?

OBAMA SMART
If Obama is smart and he seems to be then he will keep JJ and AS away from his campaign because as soon as the white LIB voter sees him swing their way he is DONE.

But if you want something done racially just call

THE JUSTUS BROTHERS: JESSIE AND AL

But remember the only time you will see Jessie Jackson is when his Child Support from all them Mistresss are due.

Black
Is Obama black? Were both parents 'black'? Does it take one drop of 'black' blood to make someone black? Twenty? Fifty? Half? Is Tiger Woods black? What does 'black' mean? And why is it important? Is it because Sharpton and Jackson have made it the ONLY thing that is important for the last 40 years?

Why do
cons take Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton so seriously????

Much bigger news however....
Is that Joe Gibbs is retiring!!!!! This is huge in DC right now.

Shells is so right.
I'm also a citizen of the state of Illinois and all we got from Obama was more taxes. Racism, corruption, high taxes, high cost of living, high crime, this state has it all. Obama talks about bringing people together while he worships in a black, Afrocentric, racist church in Chicago. His religious choice speaks volumes to me. If a White candidate belonged to a similar church he would be branded a KKK and wouldn't be allowed to run.

He's completely abandoned his senatorial duties here in IL so why doesn't he just give up the job and stop taking the paychecks? As a resident of IL I haven't seen anything beneficial that he has done for us in our state. As a resident of the US the idea of this man leading us during such treacherous times makes me very concerned.

STEELE AND OBAMA

.....Don't blame the fact that Steele was not elected to lack of Republican support ...Steele was not elected because he is a Republican and blacks would not cross over and vote for him ...they showed up at his speeches and threw oreo cookies ...

Poor, poor Obama...
Shalama Sez:

"The assassinations of both Martin Luther King and Malcolm X were disasters for the black community. I fear now for Obama's life, (probably at the hands of a white person)..."

Actually, it is worth noting that both of those historical icons were themselves assassinated by "black persons" - and in each case, pretty plainly in a turf-war/power-grab scenario.

If they perceive Obama as a REAL sign that the "Good Old Days" of race-baiting, shake-down hucksterism is gone, ... BELIEVE that the Jackson/Sharpton machine will take him down to preserve their own power & livelihoods

… of course, they'll also be the first to scream ‘white conspiracy’, and the MSM will lap it up – as facts have come to have nothing whatsoever to do with reality.

Take, for instance, this case
http://www.wired.com/print/politics/law/magazine/16-01/ps_ dna

- in which a PROSECUTOR who, when faced with a DNA technique that made it possible to find & for HIM to convict a murderer, said:

“If I could push a button and make this technology disappear, I would."

…because being able to identify a person’s RACE by their DNA is BAD.

Far more important to be able to blame the Oppressive Majority…

.....MLK was assassinated by a white as was JFK and Bobby ...JFK's killer was not a right winger, he was a lefty Communist sympathizer ...Malcolm X was killed by rival black muslims ...

.....Obama preaches unity and that is the last thing that Jackson and Sharpton want ...they thrive on conflict and seperation ...their careers depend on it ...

.....So if Obama is taken out ...look to the left ...look within his own Party ...Conservative would have nothing to gain from an Obama assassination .....COLOSSUS

NH & Iowa
Does anybody really give a "Fig" about what the people of Iowa and NH think or how they vote? Sharpton and Jesse are such idiots that it's really a waste of space to write and article or even recognize their views. Who cares?

RALPHIE

.....I was waiting for you to chime in ...I can't speak for all conservatives but I do not think of Jesse and Al as big deals ...I see them as the con men they are ...what I resent is the Liberal Press trying to ram them down our throats as "black leaders" ...in fact every time I see one of those clowns on TV I write a nasty email to the station ...

.....I see that the Foreskins figured out that the Cowboys rope-a-doped them ...so they choked in the playoffs ...they didn't want to face the Cowboys again and be humiliated ...

.....I wouldn't fret about losing Gibb ...Gibb was yesterday ...the Foreskins would not have made the playoffs if the incompetent starting QB Cambell had not gotten hurt which forced Gibb to bring in Collins ...

Unfortunately, par-for-course concerning Congressmen/Senators in US--and MP's in Canada.

An idea for you. Print out a lot of "pink-slips" with Obama's name on them and distribute them in IL neighbourhoods (variation of a tactic done by Reform Party in 1990--though only mailed to Party members including myself; I was only-too-glad to mail the pink-slip to Ottawa in 1990, and confirm it officially in 1993).

So long jerks!
I believe Obama will be the next President of the United States much to this nations demise. It's unfortunate but "Shells" is right. Obama has the charisma that many people are buying into at this very moment. Lady "O" and many other influential people have bought his malarkey. The Liberal Media is backing every illogical thing he says. The only benefit is that the wonder twins,+ Al and Jesse will be out! Hurray! I'm sick of those two clowns.

Obama and Illinois
Shells and Uneasy Rider are right on. Obama walked into Illinois and immediately seemed to be running for president. He's has done nothing here but use the state of Lincoln as his stepping stone to President.

He came out of nowhere, was suddenly a Senator, and then before we even knew who he was, or what he was about he took his one page resume and churned FOUR 4!) books on his "amazing" life and "amazing" vision.

It's almost as if someone has scripted this for him...
