Schoolchildren across America have forever loathed the dreaded summer reading list. Having just completed a grueling academic year filled with long division and state capital memorization, most kids cringe when that inevitable envelope from next year's homeroom teacher arrives, prompting a non-optional trip to the public library. Pre-emptive homework? Leave us alone! A similar bitter pill is in order for some Congressional leaders. This summer, Americans should request that two prominent Democrats take a few moments away from sandcastle construction or lemonade stand operation ($1.99 per cup after taxes) to read two books that may help clarify some recently-demonstrated confusion.

Pupil: Sen. John F. Kerry (D-MA)

Quote: "We were basically at peace [before September 11th]."

Assignment: Willful Blindness; A Memoir of the Jihad by Andrew McCarthy

Senator Kerry's rhetorical gem reminds tens of millions of Americans why they pulled the lever for President Bush four years ago. America was by no means "at peace" on September 10, 2001; A ruthless cabal of killers had declared war against us many years earlier, but we were disastrously slow to acknowledge the battle. Usually one hand clapping results in silence, but Al Qaeda's lone hand produced quite a bit of noise in the decade leading up to 9/11: Six civilians dead and hundreds injured in the 1993 World Trade Center attack. Dozens of American military personnel killed in the Khobar Towers and USS Cole bombings. Hundreds slain in explosions at the US embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam. Radical Islam was doing its very best to get our attention, but willful blindness from both political parties swept the continued threat under the rug until 3,000 innocent Americans were slaughtered. Tragically, this blindness still afflicts many Washington elites.

To prove this single ludicrous assertion wasn't a fluke, Kerry has spent the last week defending the man who upstaged him at his own convention in 2004. Presumptive Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama has been extremely supportive of efforts to confer the rights of US citizens to terrorists, and John Kerry is reporting for duty to defend him on this point. The Kerry-Obama propensity toward tackling terrorism as if it were an exercise in law enforcement is symptomatic of a pre-9/11 mentality that the nation cannot afford its leaders to adopt.

Andrew McCarthy is the former federal attorney who prosecuted the perpetrators of the first World Trade Center bombing. His book outlines, in excruciating and frustrating detail, the folly of wearing legal blinders when confronting the terrorists' declared war against us. Indictments and subpoenas simply won't deter hijackers and dirty bombers. Kerry's preposterous assertion about pre-9/11 peace, and his apparent enthusiasm for the Boumediene Supreme Court decision, must sound like nails on a chalkboard to McCarthy. After all, he's experienced firsthand the profound inadequacy of the American criminal justice system in dealing with our mortal enemies. Kerry should take a day off from windsurfing and read McCarthy's important book.

His book report is due before he once again accuses John McCain of being "out of touch."

Assignment: Moment of Truth in Iraq by Michael Yon

It requires ever-increasing doses of cognitive dissonance to deny the overwhelming success of the troop surge in Iraq, yet Speaker Pelosi has rigidly peddled misplaced doom and gloom for years. She recently added an astonishing twist to her negativity by recognizing the hard-fought gains in Iraq, but crediting them to the enemy. One wonders if the troops have fully recovered from the utter shock of hearing the Speaker of the House attribute their accomplishments to the people who are trying to kill them. It's insulting enough for politicians to blindly deny American achievements for political purposes, but going so far as to praise the enemy represents a new, despicable low.

In fairness to Pelosi, Iran has exhibited a few genuine signs of goodwill over the last few months. Its president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, recently remarked that Israel "has reached the end of its function and will soon disappear off the geographical domain." He also referred to our stalwart Middle Eastern ally as a "stinking corpse." Those unconditional sit-downs with President Obama are going to be a hoot. In addition, everyone from General Petraeus (pronounced "betray-us") to ABC News has reported that Iran is providing logistical and material assistance to extremists who are murdering and maiming both American and Iraqi forces. Perhaps this brand of treachery passes for "goodwill" in certain chic San Francisco neighborhoods, but it's generally frowned upon in a combat zone.

Michael Yon is a former Green Beret and arguably the best military reporter on the ground in Iraq. He's spent literally years of his life covering the conflict—from the valleys of 2006 to the highs achieved in 2008. When the violence was spinning out of control, Yon declared the situation a civil war. He was twice booted out of Iraq by the US military as a result of his unfavorable, but honest, reporting. Moment of Truth in Iraq is not a partisan polemic designed to canonize President Bush and rally support for the war. It is a thorough and powerful account of how the surge strategy has worked remarkably well, and that the possibility of real victory is finally within reach. If Yon somehow proves unpersuasive, perhaps this week's cover story of The Economist citing major gains in Iraq would serve as a compelling supplement. Before Pelosi continues to read from two-year-old talking points, or further denigrates the accomplishments of US soldiers, she must read Yon's book.

Her book report is due prior to her next goodwill trip to Syria.

However, “if the president thought John McCain was going to be the next president, he would think it more appropriate to let the next president make that decision than do it on his way out,” Kristol said, reinforcing the fact that McCain is offering a third Bush term on Iran.

Summer schoold is avoided
and/or failed on a regular basis. It is also volunteered for. I don't think ideologues want new information, so they're not coming to class. Sweet article, though.

tax cuts
Hopefully, we conservatives, in this time of war, will be able to hold onto our precious tax cuts and maybe even more, indefinitely, no matter if we are in Iraq for 100 years more.

History shows
Hmmm... Mr. Poop probably believes Iran released American hostages simply to embarass out-going screw-up Jimmy Carter. The fact is, that would have been wasted effort. They released the hostages because they knew without doubt that Reagan would reduce their turd-word cesspool to smoldering embers.

lose the war in iraq
somone with a terrific imagination pl;ese tell me what event or series of events will have to happen before we can say that we have won the war against terrorism. please understnd me, and clear your mind, i am talking about the only war we are fighting, the war against teerrorism. we are not at war with iraq, nor with afghanistan. we are at war with terrorists and terrorism. m. even your dinky president admits that. so, if that is the case how will we know when we have won. will every terrorist or evrn 99 percent of them lay down their arms accept christ and sign pledges never to hurt another living soul? if so how about the other 1 per cent ?. how will we know? . NOONE in the administration has ever said how it can end. perhaps because there is no end. are you going to kill all muslims just to be sure you get all the terrorists. just what are you going to do. to make sure the war is over. conquer every county that is muslim?. what? even more difficult to answer , because it does require tremendous imagination, if we were to lose the war, which so many of yoiu seem to be afraid of, how would we know. bring all the troops back home . would that end it. how do you know. mccain may have said 100 jyears partly in jest and partly in stupidity but he may have been more accurate then he knew. if you are going to try to answer my question please either answer it or call me stupid. dont make an idiot of yourself by pretrnding to answer if by confining your answer to iraq, we are i repeat , not at war with iraq, we invaded iraq, we used armed aggression against iraq, we killed a lot if iraquis who had nothing to do with terrorism, but we are not at war with them .

On tax cuts
I want someone to tell me why anyone who is actually paying taxes should pay more. If the government would spend money only on things that they are actually Constitutionally authorized to spend money on, the fools would have plenty of money.

The more we send, the more they waste. We have spent more on the "war on poverty" than on actual wars, and we have been fighting it for a lot longer, yet I don't see the lw wanting to throw up their hands to surrender in that war.

I believe we can fight a war against jihadist freaks who want us dead! You can't, however, help those who refuse to help themselves as a huge part of the "War on Poverty" attempts to do.

Some have pointed out that libs don't want to hear anything that goes against their own ideas, and that is true. They will continue closing their eyes and covering their ears while loudly singing lalala in order to avoid any proof that they may be wrong.

The Great Society
This monumental WASTE OF EVERY NICKEL has stolen as of 15 years ago 3.5 MILLION MILLION bucks from the workers and producers and slid it over to the indolent to buy their votes. Since the indolent breed like cockroaches this has led to a huge voting block that thinks the productive OWE them a living and will vote for anyone who tells them it's so.

Enter Barack. 100 billion to secure the region and keep the mullahs from taking over Iraq is "wasteful" but funnelling THIRTY-FIVE to FIFTY times that into the ever outstretched hands of his natural voting block is "good".

Note that Iraq has awarded 41 oil contracts. Six went to nationalized oil industries. Of the remaining thirty-five only FIVE went to U.S. based oil companies. So much for the "war for oil". If THAT were true we'd have almost ALL the contracts and we'd be paying $40/barrel for crude.

Rights of US citizens?
It seems to me from my constitutional law class over a decade ago that rights aren't confered upon anyone. The Constitution of these great United States doesn't give anybody rights. It merely outlines protections of these inherent rights that are confered upon all men by the creator. Seems to me these conservatives need a refresher course in Constitutional law.

Could you tell us to what you are referring?

It is true that the Constitution does not give anybody any rights; it was a way for the founders to keep the government from trying to take away natural rights. However, the left seems to think there are an awful lot of rights that the government should provide, and that is an incorrect assumption. We, as citizens, have responsibilities (our own housing, health care, living expenses, etc. that we shoudl provide ourselves absent a true physical or mental disability).

You seem to admit that all people have rights conferred on them by their creator. What about Iraqis under SH--did they have natural rights? OR did you mean that only Americans have rights conferred on them by a creator. Is that it?

Anyone who thinks John McCain (with whom I disagree with most of the time), after spending years trussed up like a christmas turkey to the degree that he hasn't been able to reach above his shoulders, WANTS to stay at war is an idiot or more likely a liar. If our entire political class had the attitude that McCain was trying to put across- i.e. we will be there til the job is done- this thing would likely be over by now. Both parties ignored the terrorists attempts to attract our attention?

What about Clinton urging Bush on inauguration day to regard terrorists as America's No. 1 threat?

What about National Security Advisor Richard Clark repeatedly begging Bush Administration officials in the months before 9/11 to meet on the al qaeda threat?

"Frankly," he told 60 Minutes, "I find it outrageous that the president is running for re-election on the grounds that he's done such great things about terrorism. He ignored it. He ignored terrorism for months, when maybe we could have done something to stop 9/11. Maybe. We'll never know."

So, our constitution should provide rights to everyone in the world? We aren't talking human rights here. There are other laws, contracts, treaties etc that cover our affairs with other countries, but the constitution only applies to US citezens, period. To suggest otherwise betrays complete ignorance to the documents intent.

For example, we abide by the Geneva convention when dealing with the humane treatment of enemy comabatants. But even this is over used. In order for the Geneva protocols to apply, certain criteria has to be met by the combatant in order to uphold THERE END of the treaty.

Yes, we strive to be better, and we hold ourselves to ideals, but there are also cases where we need to do whats necessary to protect ourselves. That is NOT unreasonable.

There are many "Geneva Conventions"
These were written and subscribed to at a time when it was hoped that if nations HAD to go to war there would at least be SOME boundaries and standards of conduct.

Like a bunch of Boy Scouts WE always held up our end and then some even when the Japanese were summarily executing our soldiers BECAUSE they surrendered. Think Philippines and the Bataan Death March. Some of the soldiers taken at Wake Island (they didn't all die so don't take the movie as history) were beheaded by Japanese officers who wanted to "test their blades".

A captive has to WEAR A UNIFORM, have a name rank and service number and be captured as a result of battle. This does not and never was intended to apply to towel headed thugs who masquerade as civilians long enough to close the distance and murder G.I.s trying to help the real civvies.

I am not sure everybody understands the concept that the jihadis are not abiding by the Geneva Convention, but we are expected to fight in a politically correct manner. It is odd that the left seems to be dead set on us losing this war just so Bush does not get any credit. What did his oppression of his people have to do with preserving and protecting the Constitution of the United States? Or is it your opinion that every nation or leader on earth which practices such oppression should be introduced to a US warfighter?

The latest leftist to pretend principle
Lewis adds to the list of wholeheartedly dishonest leftists who use sound principles as a brawler uses a bottle in a brawl -- something convenient to bash people with, and then discard as soon as it's inconvenient. So long as the result of the specious argument is a weakening of the US position, the principle will be faithfully trotted out, only to disappear down the memory hole when inherent rights are in the way.

Most leftists don't even believe in God, and yet they're lecturing us about inherent rights.

For the record -- not that I actually believe Lewis gives a shyte whether he's arguing accurately or not -- Lewis' errs because his application of inherent rights to all humans is a principle of AMERICAN CONSTITUTIONAL law. It may be universally true -- I certainly think so -- but it only APPLIES where the US Constitution has jurisdiction.

Ignore him, folks. Leftists love to use your principles against you. They have none of their own. They're like the devil -- whatever good, beauty, or truth comes from them is poisoned, because at their core, they're nothing but appetite.

the assumptions of inkling revival
It is always my pleasure when a well versed repeator of talk radio pigeon holes me because my comments are not according to thier own. It is with a secret joy that I smile, knowing my views, however contrary to a particular administration, have not detered me from answering our nations call. I smile because I know it is incomprehensible to conservatives in particular that a man who has been met the baghdad welcoming comittee could be soundly against the continued occupation of Iraq. In theory it is easy to support our occupation; that is until you have seen with your very eyes the reality of a military occupation. I do not understand how my brothers & sisters are not moved to repulsion at the very same sight; but I respect them because they have been there. It is those who have not been and are so quick to to show disrespect that I hold in contempt.

American Imperialism
George Washington said this: "Overgrown military establihsments are under any form of government inauspicious to liberty, and are to be regarded as particularly hostile to Republican libert". Now America's inhumane and horrendous war machinery circles the globe while up to 40 millions of illegals have rope on America's neck.

Isn't it great to be a conservative? Witness dottie as she firmly plugs her proverbial ears and chants 'nah, nah, nah!' Instead of defending her view that the United States military raison de 'etre is to liberate the oppressed peoples of the world, she crawls into a cocoon of denial; much like a egocentric toddler. How can one even begin to reason with such people?

It must be great to be liberal...to just babble on and on and not know what you are talking about, but act with breathtaking arrogance and pretend that you do. It's quite amusing really.

I never said the reason that the US military exists is to liberate oppressed people--no more than you said the Iraqis deserve to die since they live in Iraq and Saddam can do as he pleases.

There were UN resolutions that Saddam by which Saddam was not abiding. Let me draw an analogy so you can understand. Are you a parent, Lewis? If so do you have limits for your children? What happens if they do not abide by those limitations? I will tell you what happens in my house--there are sure and swift consequences (no cell phone, no car privileges, no going out, etc). If I did not follow through
I would be sending a message that I do not mean what I say, and they would likely behave as normal kids and get away with what they could.

Saddam had limitations and rules that he was not following. The UN, acting like the impotent bunch of pansies that they are, would not follow through on the resolutions. The US, wisely, decided that he needed to be held to account.

Do you have problems with people being held accountable, Lewis? Oh, I forgot--most of the lw does. Welfare and abortion through the ninth month are just two pieces of evidence on that.
