Poll
Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

The Mitt Romney candidacy is in its own surreal way like a re-enactment of the O.J. trial. Most of the major talk radio hosts are like O.J.'s legal team, led by Mitt's John the Baptist, Hugh Hewitt. Hugh declared in his commentary on the speech that anyone who doesn't agree with him that Mitt is the Republican Savior is "not to be trusted." Trusted?

It's like the O.J. trial in one simple way: Mitt's "lawyers" are turning reality upside down in the court of public opinion. Republican primary voters are the O.J. jury and they will decide whom to believe: (1) Romniacs who believe Mitt is the conservative messiah or (2) Mitt's political record, which is the most liberal of any presidential candidate on stage – Republican or Democrat.

The biggest question after Romney's religion speech is: How long can right wing talk radio deceive Americans that Mitt is the victim of a vast right wing conspiracy of bigots attacking him for his religion? The next biggest question is: how long can Americans accept the irrational idea that Mitt is the alpha and omega of the political spectrum – John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan?

And finally, how long can this enormous political hoax that Romney is The Conservative Dragon-Lady Slayer be sustained when his Hillary-like governor's record is right out there for all to see?

When former Reagan education secretary Bill Bennett asks on radio: "Isn't Romney running on his record of being anti-gay and pro-life," he showcases talk radio's astonishing ignorance. How come radio's self-described philosopher king doesn't know Romney installed gay marriage and abortion as a health care "benefit" in America's Cradle of Liberty?

The Romney campaign is functioning like an X-ray machine, revealing the extent of corruption in the ambiguous world of 21 st century conservatism. If Romney is a Reagan conservative, why has the media glorified him, unlike Reagan who they couldn't stand?

In addition to being a political X-ray machine, Mitt's campaign has also administered a much-needed national I.Q. test.

How many believe all that is standing between Mitt and a Republican primary victory is "ugly evangelical bigotry?" Okay. How many think the problem is his used-car-salesman demeanor, alienating evangelicals and Hillary-like governor's record? The results are now in: the envelope please. They show Romney is fooling 99 percent of talk radio hosts but only 9 percent of Americans, according to political polls. He's fooling America's wise men but not the "dumb evangelicals."

Let's see how long it will take America's radio prophets to grasp the obvious: Doesn't it smell a little funny when a candidate pretends to be a man for all voters: liberal icon JFK – and – conservative hero "The Gipper?" The location of his speech, in Texas where JFK gave his "religion speech," was an obvious mind control ploy to make him look like the Catholic JFK.

Hewitt ended his commentary on Mitt's speech by calling Mitt "the great communicator," Reagan's nickname. For the love of Mitt, who is he – JFK, Reagan or a Mormon being persecuted by Bible-thumpers for his faith that he is the savior? Even Rush didn't find it odd that an authentic conservative would give a big speech impersonating Ted Kennedy's brother.

For us, Romney's "religion speech" invoked the spirit, not of JFK, but of Jon Lovitz's Saturday Night Live portrayal of the Great Actor – "Acting!! GENIUS!!!" Mitt gave his best 1950s-sitcom-dad imitation trying to convince us he's just another traditional, patriotic Christian-American who believes exactly the same things we all believe. Except, of course, for his beliefs that he is the reincarnation of JFK and Ronald Reagan, and the evil churchgoer conspiracy is out to get him.

The religion speech may be Romney's Last Stand to keep Americans distracted from his governor's record and focused on the evangelical Pharisees who can't see he's the Republican savior. The truth is that Romney and his P.R. agents (a.k.a. the media) have focused America on his religion. How many talk radio sermons does it take to convince us "ugly bigotry" is why Romney's poll numbers can't get above the number of his toes?

The weird truth is: evangelical leaders are among the most public Romniacs beating the drum for him. A coalition of evangelical leaders, including Gary Bauer, prominent Southern Baptists, theologians and numerous big name pastors, like John Hagee, have sung the Romney Kool Aid song. Fortunately, the sheep have ignored their staggering shepherds.

When you've drunk Romney's kool aid reality becomes inverted: 1. He's a conservative. He is? How did he get elected to the most liberal state in the U.S.? 2. He's the only one who can beat Hillary. He is? Polls show any of the Republican candidates could but that Romney is the least likely . 3. He's a smart money man. He is? How come experts are calling his health care plan a fiscal Frankenstein at birth? How come almost every Massachusetts' city and town has rejected it as unaffordable?

Romney declared we should not be focused on his religion in his religion speech. So why has he focused us on his religion? And if he truly believes "religion shouldn't be used as a litmus test" in politics, then why is he using religion as a litmus test in politics? According to Mitt, any evangelical not interested in him flunks his religion litmus test and is guilty of "ugly bigotry." Like Hewitt says, "they are not to be trusted."

Not only is his governor's record more liberal than Hillary's Senate record but he has her husband's creepy habit of looking straight into the camera and delivering bold fibs. "I'm pro-life...I'm for family values...I've been a lifelong hunter."

He vowed to uphold the U.S. Constitution and mentioned John Adams twice in his speech. Unfortunately, he violated the Adam's-authored Massachusetts Constitution when he legitimized gay marriage in the Cradle of Liberty. Would Adams agree with Hugh about Mitt if he saw Romney flouted his constitution in a governor's command to town clerks and justices of the peace to sign gay marriage certificates or resign?

Romney's speech declaration, "I live by my Mormon faith," is rudely contradicted by the health care plan he gave Massachusetts. Romneycare has made abortion a health care benefit and has given Planned Parenthood a permanent spot on the plan's board. Mormon doctrine is pro-life. And Mitt says: "I am firmly pro-life." Guess it depends on what you mean by the word "am."

As we've shown in numerous exposes that the media continue to ignore, Mitt achieved what Hillary couldn't. Hillary couldn't get a government health care plan established. Mitt did. She could never get abortion as a health care benefit. Mitt did. Hillary couldn't get gay marriage instituted. Mitt did.

Romney is the Elephant in the Living Room that the best and brightest can't see.

Wow
I've never had to slog through so much trash in one article.

Where to even start?
Another guy who suggests that Romney should have ignored the concept of checks and balances, exercising Executive authority, even when it contradicts the Legislative and Judicial branches of gov't. Are you really advocating that that Constitution should have been pushed aside because you personally don't think gays should have the right to marry?

Why not share with us his far left record as governor. What was your budget looking like when he took office? What did it look like when he left? How many taxes were raised? Was the net tax burden increased or decreased while he was in office?

Finally, please point us all to legislation that he endorsed that (1) furthered abortions (2) provided lienency on illegal immigrants and (3) promoted gay rights.

If he is sooooo liberal surely there must be an abundance of legislation that he advocated promoting these three points.

Why is Every Article You Write ...
...a diatribe on Romney and his religion. Why don't you just admit that you are an anti-mormon bigot Jackson. You and your lies will destroy all of your credibility!

I am fired from Townhall for overdoing my Romney hatred.

One more note ...
I'm always skeptical when someone says the following:

1. There are many respected conservative commentators.
2. The commentators have largely reached a consensus.
3. In this case THEY are all wrong while I am right.

So, we are to believe that Romney has somehow worked a special Mormon magic spell over the most respected conservative voices. They are ALL duped. But not Gregg Jackson. The magic spell doesn't work on him. Gregg's above it. Gregg won't be stupid enough to fall for Romney's tricks.

I'm sorry Gregg. You are on the wrong side of the argument this time.

Is This the End of Evangelicalism in America?

Again a Romney hatred full article.

So in total of you have written four articles, ALL of them against Romney and only and only Romney.

Now we all appreciate you trying to help us out in narrowing our choices, but you seem to have some serious grudge with Romney, and we cannot pin point if its not just the fact that you have been paid by an opponent.(??)

If you be balanced and fair only then people will listen to you, not like that.

Rubbish rubbish rubbish
Jackson hates romney as much as he hates his church. I quess bjsquess is right when he says that that well respected conservative talk show host and NATIONAL REVIEW ONLINE are all duped. Only Jackson the unbiased mormon hater can see clearly. Elect Jackson!!!!!!!!

who is this guy
and how did he get a column?

townhall should be embarrassed.

From a dang#%& inconvenient Christian
You can put as many (R)s behind Romney's name as you like,

and the ALL the talk show hosts can fail me miserably beyond ALL recognition and reason,

but this is a good article, and I will never vote for Romney, the liberal-beyond-belief "Republican" candidate from yes, Massachusetts.

Commonwealth Care, (o mama!) Good for you comrad.

Romney
Mitt is the most accomplished, most articulate, best qualified canditate in the race - bar anyone!! Not one Democrat even comes close, if he is nominated (which he should be) and doesn't win against the like of Hillary, well this nation is in big trouble.

No tricks, it's just Romney on tape
Yes, Mitt's a lovely man,

and Commonwealth Care should be adopted in your state, well actually your country, soon.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCYu1i4Pxa0

I agree
I'll vote for Ron Paul. He's consistent, principled, and conservative.

Pro life Democrat
Huckabee is conservative on about 3 issues. His record is liberal on the other issues that normally define a conservative. Huckabee has flipped on immigration (last week) and a host of smaller issues.

Romney has changed on abortion and that was while he was governor 2 or more years ago.

The more I examine Huckabee's record the more I realize he in no conservative. Huck is basically is a pro life Democrat.

What?
Is Mr. Jackson saying that it is a bad thing for Republicans to run and win in a mostly liberal state and this automatically means they are liberal.

Should Republicans just cede all currently blue states to the liberals?

This article seems to be breathlessly hateful and really stretches the facts to fit a certain view of Romney.

On the Mormon/evangelical points in this article, when Gregg continually whines that he is unable to oppose Romney without being branded a bigot--uh, methinks thou doth protest too much.

EXCELLENT ARTICLE Gregg
The very best one I have read on Townhall concerning the RINO Romney.

5 STARS as you covered Romney like oxygen covers the earth.
Well done

He does not even meet the usual lessor evil, he is in first place.
And wins the blue ribbon for being a hypocrite

his ?
Mr. Jacksons ? to MITT should be the following.

"Mitt do you consider Hucks response on the question of MORMONS being a CULT as religious bigotry" (Huck said to ask MITT about it)?

Correct Answer from MITT,, Go ask Huck!!!! (insinuating Huck is a BIGOT just like Huck insinuated MORMONS are a CULT, and not worthy of becoming POTUS)

Sadly,,, i'm afraid Mitt would answer,, "I don't believe Huck is a BIGOT, and I'd appreciate you not bringing that up about him"

"a soft answer turneth away wrath"

Yea,,, Now, who is suppossed to be the TRUE CHRISTIAN?

On the other hand Mitt answering Hucks way would be SWEET JESUS now would'nt it.

I agree and I am
I agree with the author and I am an active LDS member. I have to say that if he get's the party ticket I will very SAD! Right now I am leaning towards FRED. But by all rights this column could have "insert name here" everywhere MITT'S name was used and the HUCK'S name could work as well if not even better. The only thing is that he keep's my faith is not an issue but hay this is my faith and that is why you should vote for me (HUCK)(Insert Name Here)!! But he is going to get pushed of this train right on to the THIRD RAIL AND GET NAILED! As both of them should. The shame is right I can not see anyone running in either party this is mt FIST CHOICE in any way shape or form.... This make's for a sad, scary day's ahead for all of us and even more so for our children!:(,:(,:(... I do not know any other way to even express my disappointment in this cycle of elections, and to think I was scared and sad in 2004.

Huckabee's Hoax
Mike Huckabee, an ordained Southern Baptist minister, asks in an upcoming article, "Don't Mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?"

The article, to be published in Sunday's New York Times Magazine, says Huckabee asked the question after saying he believes Mormonism is a religion but doesn't know much about it.

The authoritative Encyclopedia of Mormonism, published in 1992, does not refer to Jesus and Satan as brothers. It speaks of Jesus as the son of God and of Satan as a fallen angel, which is a Biblical account.

A spokeswoman for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said Huckabee's question is usually raised by those who wish to smear the Mormon faith rather than clarify doctrine.

"We believe, as other Christians believe and as Paul wrote, that God is the father of all," said the spokeswoman, Kim Farah. "That means that all beings were created by God and are his spirit children. Christ, on the other hand, was the only begotten in the flesh and we worship him as the son of God and the savior of mankind. Satan is the exact opposite of who Christ is and what he stands for."

Earlier this month in Iowa, Huckabee wouldn't say whether he thought Mormonism — rival Romney's religion — was a cult (see NewsMax of more details).

Huckabee is very slick. He pretends he does not know about Mormons and then writes an article about them that uses one of the most patent and well worn anti Mormon distortions for a title.

The title is straight out of the discredited God Maker films. Even most Evangelicals realize that the God Makers were full of lies, deceptions and well documented errors. They was even disavowed by other anti Mormons.

Jackson Is Justified
in accurately portraying Romney's Record and Religious speech hoax! Jackson, he didn't just fail at convincing evangelicals - he failed at convincing conservative americans and no amount of his speech endorsement by ALL conservative talk radio hosts gave him a boost in the polls - oooh! His polls are stagnant because there can only be a limited number of smittened republicans and Mitt's Missionaries who ignore just what a BIG LIABILITY HIS RECORD AND RELIGION have become to our party! Actually, his speech was thursday and in another 3hrs people had moved on to the oprah/obama mania in IA......and today's endorsement from National Review does not seem to have changed his poll numbers much - IA, thank you and republicans, wake up to Romney's Real Record and Reject Romney's nomination.

How Many Mitt's Missionaries
do we have on this site? Seems like Saint Romney is well organized - why insult a columnist because he raises issues about Romney? Because its easier than trying to defend Romney's Record and fake Religious Speech - americans are getting it - thank God!

SoldierOfTruth1 , when Romney looses
count up the votes and say....all these people are bigots! then you'll feel better but america will be a better place for Rejecting Romney's Record! and of course a mormon missionary in the whitehouse.

TH Commentator, please explain
which of Romney's multiple records voters will use to when deciding to vote for him? Without re-directing to other candidates - just defend Romney's Record and Religion (because now this has become an issue, thanks to his hoax, hollier than thou speech). ....waiting anxiously to hear your defense for Romney's Record and Religion - why should republicans bear this huge burden? GO!

Are The Mormons Are Realizing?
Looks like the Mormons, who overwhelmingly vote conservative GOP, are finally realizing that they aren't really respected by those who control the GOP.

The GOP is owned by the Southern Evangelicals.

Southern Evangelicals have as much use for Mormons as they do for Gays, Muslims, Catholics, Abortionists, Feminists etc.

When will conservatives of the non-evangelical stripe realize that their party has been taken over by a bunch of people who hate everyone except those who are EXACTLY LIKE THEM?

Mitt Knives Huckabee!

Will this work?

The founder of the Minuteman Project, the anti-illegal immigrant group, endorsed Republican Mike Huckabee on Tuesday, while Huckabee dismissed a presidential rival’s immigration criticism as the work of “the tattletale in the third grade.”

Mitt is the DNC's nightmare
The DNC is just waiting for the GOP to nominate Huckabee (the candidate with the "glass jaw"). They haven't issued a negative press release in 10 months on him. By contrast, they've issued 99 press releases on Mitt Romney, whom they consider the GOP's most formidable candidate (even more than Rudy).

Huckster only recently saw the light on immigration. Mitt took action while he was governor.

get 3 things straight
1. The mormon religion is ever changing. It allows its leaders to change its doctrine over time as they see fit. If you read THE KINGDOM OF CULTS you will find the original mormon doctrine before they went big time, They believe in polgomy, killing infidels(just like the muslims all outsiders are infidels) they believe we are all going to become gods on our own planets, the bible is not the authoritative book but is secondary to the Book of Mormon and the Pearl of Great Price. What Huck said in 1992 may have been true but see the Mormons like Mitt get to change what they think and say so their doctrine now is not the same as when they started(less than 200 years ago).
2. Mitt the victim, do we really want to elect a guy who is constantly portraying himself as the victim of religious bigotry. I sure don't want Hillary or Mitt both of whom see themselves as victims.
3. This is the most liberal republican in the race even further to the left than Rudy and that is saying a lot. If I want to vote democratic, I would simply do so. This guy is more than a RINO, he a liberal masquerading as a republican.

Greg Jackson, Hillory's Whipping Boy
Ijust read back to back commentary (two different townhall writers) comparing Mitt Romney to the OJ trial. Must be the new liberal talking point from Hillory's email instructions for the day. Conservatives, watch for the hidden agenda's in these discussions.

leaning Romney
With each passing day, I lean more and more towards Romney.
Damn the Morman thing . . . I only care that he's not a Muslim. He is very bright, knows and has been very successful in business, is a natural leader, is excellent thinking on his feet, seldom gets caught in trick or set up questions, seems morally stellar. ( I hate to add this one, but, he even looks presidential.)

Foreign Affairs may be an Achilles Heel, but I believe that is true will all the candidates, except perhaps (zero-chance) McCain. Most new presidents rely heavily on State, Defense and Intelligence department briefings anyway.

Also there is the matter of changing positions on abortion, stem cell research and government sponsored health insurance. (these are not huge issues for me) I believe if we start investigating "changed positions" equally, on all candidates, we'll find that this is not that unusual. Shoot!, these people are politicians where their every word is recorded and disected ad nauseam.

So, I think in the end it comes down to TRUST.

Again, so far this is just a lean, but the final strength is that I believe he can beat Hillary in a walk.

®

PS. On the negative side: I am not wild about his affiliations with the Bush's. That causes me to think cabal!

for budbud
budbud asks: "When will conservatives of the non-evangelical stripe realize that their party has been taken over by a bunch of people who hate everyone except those who are EXACTLY LIKE THEM?"

I realized that years ago.
That's why I'm no longer a Republican. I'm a registered Independent now.

In the past, I had voted for Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush 41, Bush 43. But I've just about had it with these Bible-thumpers.

Utah, heavily Mormon, has been a staunchly Republican state for decades. And the reward they're getting from the rest of the GOP base is to have their faith attacked and their character besmirched.

gotta check the record
i can't believe that no one has gone through mitt's record with a fine toothed comb to find all the stuff that jackson has found.

certainly, the other opponents have and would have shouted this stuff from the rooftops.

i will have to look for myself.

i thought i liked mitt, i will hsve to find out.
huckabee is a tax-loving, spending dem in republican clothing.
thompson seems too tired to run.
i like paul, but his foreign policy is sketchy.

Does G.Jackson ever write anything good?
Mr. Jackson - you have the intelligence of a rock. I'd say your days at TH are numbered if you can't do any better than post fictional smear-Romney propaganda.

1. You misquoted Hewitt - Hugh said Romney's speech was magnificient and anyone who says otherwise is not to be trusted as an analyst. Hugh referred to the speech (not the candidate) when he made that comment. Allow me to illustrate Hugh's point: As much as I hate Hillary, I would have to give credit where credit is due if she gave a speech that good...if my hatred toward Hillary is far to great for me to acknowledge when she does something good, then my objectivity is impaired and I shouldn't be trusted as an analyst. Gregg - where does that leave you?

2. According to drudge report, ( http://www.drudgereport.com/flashhu.htm ) Mitt has been attacked more by Democrats than any other candidate...Huck the least. That truly says something about which GOP nominee will run well against the Democrats. By the way - I don't buy in to any of the rhetoric about Romney losing big time to Hillary due to GOP voters staying home. Its all talk.

Any pro-life GOP voter ought to be shot & pissed on if they willingly hand victory to Hillary because of their refusal to vote for the GOP nominee. The spoils of a Hillary victory include 3-4 more Supreme Court Justice appointments...thereby sticking a daggar into 40+ years of hard work for the pro-life cause) As much as I hate Huck, I'd have to vote for him over Hillary because I am smart enough to know what's at stake if Hillary wins. Same for Thompson, McCain, Rudy, Mitt, and even Paul.

3. The 2008 race will be decided by 6-7 states...OH, FL, MI, MN, WI, VA, and CO. No other state is expected to change from blue to red (or from red to blue) in 2008 regardless of the nominee. Mitt (or any GOP nominee) will do very well against Hillary...as long as they are able to raise money and know how to run a campaign.

jim bowie got one thing right!
After seeing jim bowie's reference to the authoritative, critically-acclaimed, NY Times bestselling, bigot-inspired, hate-monger inspiring classic The Kingdom of Cults (which he spelled in all caps, justifiably so, to reverence this profound work of intolerance), I looked in the dictionary to see exactly what cult means. Here is the definition from Merriam-Webster's website:

Main Entry: cult Listen to the pronunciation of cult
Pronunciation: \'k?lt\
Function: noun
Usage: often attributive
Etymology: French & Latin; French culte, from Latin cultus care, adoration, from colere to cultivate — more at wheel
Date: 1617

1: formal religious veneration : worship

2: a system of religious beliefs and ritual; also : its body of adherents

So, if this is the meaning of a cult, then Mormons are definitely a cult! AS IS EVERY OTHER RELIGIOUS GROUP OUT THERE. The whole time people have been calling Mormons a cult, they have been actually using a word that applies, and ultimately unites, all Americans. Funny, didn't someone give a speech recently that said something along the lines of the shared beliefs of Americans...

A bit confused...
I listen to many of the big name conservative talk show hosts and I must confess that Jackson's article has me a bit confused.

All of the Conservative talk show hosts have jumped on the Romney bandwagon according to Jackson. Really? Because they routinely claim they are not actively backing anyone. And listen to them interview other hopefuls like Rudy, Mike or John. They always seem enamored with whomever they are interviewing at the time.

Michael Medved recently praised Mitt's speech, but within a day he was calling Mitt on the carpet for his questionable hiring practices.

So I have to ask, where is this, "love fest" with regards to Mitt? Have any radio hosts even officially backed him yet? No? Then perhaps Jackson should relax. He seems unnecessarily wound up on this topic.

Endorsements
I also find it interesting that (according to the Washington Post) Mitt has more endorsements from elected GOP officials than Rudy, Huck, Thompson, Hunter, Paul, and Tancredo combined.

http://projects.washingtonpost.com/2008-presidential-candi dates/endorsements/

Romney's reasons
I think Mitt Romney has gotten a 'bad rap' on the question of authenticity. The only real issue where he has changed is abortion, and people overlook a few relevant facts. First, Romney really did have a close relative die from an illegal abortion. It was not some sort of strategy for a campaign. Who can blame him for having been conflicted on the issue? Second, Romney has always maintained that he thinks abortion is wrong and has advised people against abortions. Third, Romney has always refused to be labeled "pro-choice". People who say "Romney used to be pro-choice" are wrong. He used to be "effectively" pro-choice, which Romney says has the "effect" of being pro-choice but is not ideologically pro-choice. The fact that Romney refused to be called "pro-choice" when running in the liberal state of MA shows that Romney had a genuine struggle with the issue. If Romney had wanted to pander to the MA electorate, he would have labeled himself pro-choice. Instead, Romney chose to hurt his campaign by admitting that he was neither pro-choice nor pro-life.

On polygamy...
jim bowie also pointed out that Mormons used to be polygamists. There's another thing that unites most Americans. Since most Americans are of an Abrahamic faith (Christian, Jew, or Muslim), and since Abrahamic faiths revere and reverence the prophet Abraham, a polygamist (he had children with Sarai and Hagar), then all Abrahamic faiths once believed in, and have since changed there stance, on polygamy. Most men of God after Abraham (Jacob, Isaac, David, Solomon, etc.) also had mutiple wives. Oh and for those who passionately object that God didn't condone their actions, read 2nd Samuel 12:7-8, when the prophet Nathan, speaking to David, says that God gave him his "wives" (plural).

Article stinks - get your facts strait
This is baseless slander against Romney. You are obviously Huckabee supporters writing this article. It's OK, slander is legal in this country.

If planned parent hood got their fingers on anything in MA during Romney's governorship, it's because of the liberal legistlature Mitt had to deal with there, like Ted Kennedy. Romney is not a liberal! You're blinded to the Nth degree.

Ry
Romney by admitting that he was neither pro-choice nor pro-life says that he is indeed "pro-choice", period.

JACKSON

.....I think I've got it ...you are trying to tell us that you don't like Romney ...right? .....COLOSSUS

Dude, relax...
Baby Huey is just plugging *the book*. I would expect nothing less from him. And nothing more, mind you. Baby Huey is NOTHING if not predictable.

Great Article!
I think the article sums it up nicely. As for me, I don't give a hoot about Romney being a Mormon. I do care about his positions of convenience.

So John Kerry-isk of him. He was for abortion before he was against it, just as he was for gay marriage before he was against it. Very Mormon of him too!

Sick of this crap
Comment in 2 parts.

Part 1

This makes 4 articles against Romney, Mr.Jackson. It implies one of two things,

A. You have a legitimate reason for opposing Mr. Romney, and his success is maddening because, to you at least, he clearly is a disaster for the Republican party.

B. You have a obsessive dislike for Romney for whatever reason.

I lean toward the latter choice if only because you have yet to give any arguments that are new and the last three articles each have more or less the same information. This information is available to all the conservative talk show hosts and they do not seem bothered, nor does the National Review among others who endorsed him recently. Also your articles seem to be approaching the level of conspiracy theorists where everyone is out to get you because things aren't going your way, and there is no one more intellectually laughable than a conspiracy theorist, nor anyone whose opinion is easier to ignore.

What I want to know is who you DO support, you have established you don't like Romney for several less than convincing reasons but have not addressed who you do support.

Sick Part 2
I have decided to support Romney because he is easily the most palatable canidate in the Republican field.

Guliani is bad on immigration and abortion and has a disaster for a personal life making him less able to capitalize against a portion of Hillary's weaknesses. I also think he is highly overrated.

McCain is bad on immigration, campaign finance, and waterboarding(he is against), though he has changed positions on some of these, he also has a record of back-stabbing Bush on things I was for and I am not ready to forgive.

Huckabee is bad on immigration, taxes, and crime. He appears to have a significant amount of political baggage and he also has a disconcerting habit of injecting religion into politics in a very exploitative manner. This habit has reached embarassing levels.

Thompson, in my mind, has as his main problem a percieved lack of energy. His politics are excellent generally but he comes off as a unenergetic, uninspiring, bland canidate. He feels like Bob Dole and he doesn't appear to be going anywhere nor grabbing our attention.

This leaves Romney whose problems are: 1.His former pro-choice position turned pro-life recently, which you write off as political expediancy, but isn't the point of the pro-lifers to change minds. Like saying someone isn't Christian enough because they converted instead of being born that way. 2. His Mass Gov record which is admittedly messy, all the faults of which you seem determined to place solely on Mitt's shoulders because he didn't go gun down the judiciary personally. I am not against an analysis of what truely is his fault and what is the fault of the liberal state legislature. But you have not done that, nor have you accepted any of Romneys reasonable explanations.

They gave us 8 years of Clintoons

FINALLY::: NATIONAL REVIEW HAS IT JUST RIGHT

LOL!
Of course Romney is organized...he's a gozillionaire. Yep, just like the other two MA liberals...and he's just as liberal.

Gregg, outstandingly thorough article. Sarah, you are right on the money, girl...notice that not one Mittwit contests Goodridge or the subsidized abortions under Commonwealth Care...they simply call anyone who doesn't intend on voting for Mitt, a bigot.

This is what liberals do you understand, when they cannot debate you on substance and want to hide who they really are...they call you a bigot.

That is tantamount to Hillary saying that if we don't vote for her, it's simply b/c we hate women.

If President Bush is our Jimmy Carter, then Mitt Romney is our Bill Clinton. Bob-n-weave, bait-n-switch, ebb & flow...

Would love to see the arbs for talk radio during this period...

what's your problem?
Jackson, why do you hate Romney so much? Is it because he's Mormon? It's one thing to be skeptical of his pro-life change, his handling of ever instance as governor, or his current stances but you just sound like an irrational hater.

NR is spot on (as usual)! Romney is the best overall package for true conservatives.

And your insinuation weeks ago that Romney winning would be "the end of evangelicalism as we know it" was just insane fear-mongering.

A discourse analyst's take
Excuse me if this bores anyone, but Jackson can be effectively discredited by looking at the objective function of his discourse paragraph by paragraph:
#1 "The Mitt Romney...": Unsupported negative opinion, allegation, innuendo (Mitt REALLY = OJ?)
#2 "It's like OJ...": Unsupported negative opinion, allegation, innuendo (Mitt REALLY MOST liberal of R AND D candidates?)
#3 "The biggest question...": Unsupported negative opinion, allegation, innuendo (talk radio REALLY ALL supporting Romney - or just all supporting the ideas in the speech?)
#4 "And finally...": Unsupported negative opinion, allegation, innuendo (Romney REALLY = Hillary?)
#5 "When former...": First attempt at a substantive point, backed up with "evidence" based in negative opinion, allegation and innuendo, along with grossly biased misrepresentations (Rush Limbaugh is aware of Romney's record, lsiten or read the transcripts)
#6 "The Romney...": Unsupported negative opinion, allegation, innuendo (media REALLY glorifying Romney?)
#7 "In addition...": Set-up for insulting the intelligence of anyone who supports Romney on any of his positions
#8 "How many believe...": Insult of the intelligence of anyone who supports Romney on any issue--insulting opinion based on biased interpretation of unconfrimed polling data
#9 "Let's see...": Unsupported negative opinion, allegation, innuendo, insult of the intelligence of conservative talk show hosts who disagree with him
#10 "Hewitt ended...": Unsupported negative opinion, allegation, innuendo (Mitt REALLY trying to be JFK? JFK REALLY be-smirchable by association to his ultra-liberal brother?)

Rest in next post...

Romney...
Massachusetts governor equals liberal. Thanks no!

Discourse analyst take three
(continued...)

I grew up in Canada, so I'm not sure how this works, but maybe you all can enlighten me as to what grade level in the US education system Greg Jackson might have been exposed to the idea that there should be evidence to back up the ideas in his writing. I think he needs to get to that basic first, and then we can discuss the quality of his evidence. In my hometown high school, I truly think he would have a hard time getting out of 10th grade English class. I'm shocked and dismayed that TownHall editors let this one pass compared with the quality we've seen in the vast bulk of the other articles on this forum. Perhaps his standing as a local Massachusetts radio personality gives him some credible standing, but his argumentation certainly takes all of that potential credibility away for me.

Hysteria
never convinces me of anything and this article is hysterical in tone.

I have never been convinced Romney is a Reagan conservative. But what I see is a man who lives a conservative life.

No divorces,no scandal, his children like him and work for his election, he lives his life with faith, and is very conservative and successful in financial matters. Turning around failing companies, he used conservative philosophy well suited to overcoming bureacracy and overload of programs and federal employees.

That he tipped his hat to liberal principles as govenor of a liberal state is OK as long as he is now in the right side. People see his religion as a negative but mormon principles are against abortion and same sex marriages.

We have mormon representatives and senators. Has their religion led them to cause harm to the american people?

Slick and "used car salesman demeanor" is called by those who don't like his competent, intelligent and informed manner.

WE tried it your way 3 TIMES it FAILED
the Evangelicals got their way 3 times: actually 4 times:

Reagan
Bush I
Bush II
and the Clintoons:

After all of those attempts we still have
legal abortions
we still have illegal immigration (invasion)
we still do NOT have a suitable energy policy

HUCK is a LIBERAL, wimp in a Preachers cloak
he was pro amesty
he was tax everything in sight
he was pro illegals rights over US citizen rights

He is a gutless wonder who can PREACH
We do not need another Commander in PREACHING

Evangelical HATE SCREECH
the Hysterical psycho Hype Evangelicals have driven the Independent Conservatives (also pro life) out of the GOP

THEY HAVE NOTHING TO OFFER this country other than HATE SCREECH, the article validates:

WE STILL HAVE LEGAL ABORTIONS after
Reagan
Bush I
Bush II

HUCk the LIBERAL IN PREACHERS CLOAK bible banging right wing extremist Has zero solutions for the fiscal freedom loving Conservatives:

It appears that the evangelicals WILL give Hillary the keys to the Oval Office as they have done before:

FINALLY: National Review has it just right:
Obviously they did their homework:

Huckabee the thief
Speaking of trying to fool people, Mike Huckabee Stole National Review's Immigration plan and tried to pass it off as his own!

National Review editor Rich Lowry was just on Laura Ingraham, explaining that Huckabee STOLE his Immigration proposal from National Review. There was an article outlining NR's approach to the issue and Huckabee took without crediting NR.

He stole it!

A Fair Article?
No, I think Mr. Jackson is over the top a bit on Romney. However, I do believe that many pundits and news people are trying to blame any Romney loss on those "prejudiced" and dumb evangelicals. I know that anti-Mormon bias does exist in some quarters, but I am an evangelical and I am personally seeing very little of evangelicals who will not vote for Romney because he is a Mormon. In fact they are probably much more likely to vote for him than for say Giuliani. Most of the "anti-Mormon" smoke I am seeing is coming from certain establishment Republican writers trying to discredit Huckabee. I believe it is largely a media-invented issue. My two cents.

RINO Mitt
I listen to Hugh Hewitt everyday and decided to stop listening because his show is an infomercial for RINO Mitt. Gregg, good article, the proof is in the pudding, "Mitt can not get an approval rating above the number of his toes" He continues to sit at 9%. On the other hand I don't see a true conservative among the lot of candidates. I hear a lot about Ron Paul, but something in me does not trust him either. Five stars Gregg

Unintentional Comedy
Mr. Jackson and Mr. Dinger I read your pieces now only for what Bill Simmons has coined the "unintentional comedy" factor. Your articles would probably be more persuasive if they weren't such blatant over-the-top hack jobs.
As it stands, they have zero credibility.

Each has their faults
I am finding it more and more difficult to find the perfect candidate. Delusional, I know. Result - pick the one that can move the country forward - still looking. Defend each all you want, until we take a piece from each we do not have a consensus candidate.

EXCELLENT ARTICLE Gregg
The very best one I have read on Townhall concerning the RINO Romney.
---
10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the GOSPEL OF PEACE;
16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the SWORD OF THE SPIRIT, which is the WORD OF GOD:
18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication FOR ALL SAINTS;
(New Testament | Ephesians 6:10 - 18)

Mitt Romney stands firm on gospel sod and we must do the same; and in Lincoln’s words, ‘I am not bound to win, but I am bound to be true; I am not bound to succeed, but I am bound to live by the light that I have.”

So talent scout, you know what you will or will not do, and it appears that your loyalty is to Liberal interests, it is written all over you efforts here. But like a devil you have served a purpose, to make me more forthright, hones and sincere and to have respect to the enemy. Every hour is our finest and every moment is destiny.

Our fate is in our own hands, and God willing he neither binds or sets us free, that is up to you and me.

Evidence that seeks your verdict
I've spent considerable time examining Gregg Jackson's assertions about Romney. With all the high powered talk host and evangelical support he had, I was looking for the truth. How did Romney handle the Commonwealth of MA Constitution? I discovered that
1)the MA Constitution denies the Judical Branch in MA any role in marriage policy.."All causes of marriage…shall be heard and determined by the governor and council, until the legislature shall, by law, make other provision."
PART THE SECOND, Ch. III, Article V.
2)Goodrich should be null and void http://massresistance.blogspot.com/2007/12/hugh-hewitt-tol d-romney-to-defy-mass.html
3) Romney chose to ignore the MA Constitution. Serious, by my standards, how about yours?
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/08/us/politics/08romney.html _r=3&hp=&oref=slogin&pagewanted=print&oref=slogin
Do your research on Jackson's claims, not on how you feel about his claims. You'll find him to be spot on.

Romney Better Than Others
Fred Thompson is the only real conservative on ALL the issues. Having said that Romney will be a better conservative than Rudy, Huckabee or McCain.

Thank You For Your Insight

Discourse analyst take three

I don’t know how you did it, I could hardly stand reading it.

There are so few that really support Jackson that perhaps it is to much even for them.

Mr. Jackson do yourself a favor; lighten up and read something inspirational every day. “Fill you life with lofty dreams, not with shallow idle schemes.”

No Amnesty Candidates

No Rudy, No McCain, No Huckabee

Romney and Thompson are saying the right things now, but haven't always. Hunter and Tancredo have been working on this for years on our behalf. Longer than most of you have been alarmed about it, they have been trying to sound the alarm. Choose carefully in the primaries, your future depends on it.

HUNTER FOR AMERICA

Securing the border and enforcing the law is the only way we get to keep our rule of law, our representative Republic, and our Constitution. We must elect a President who WILL secure the border and enforce the law. If citizenship becomes meaningless, this will no longer be the United States of America.

The so-called "top tier" will not get out the voters necessary for a GOP win. Increasing turnout is the key. Give people something to vote for. Not just the lesser of two evils. Won't work this time. People are fed up with the inundation of illegal aliens. They would come out in droves for the clear choice of D=amnesty or R=enforcement. They will stay home if they both equal amnesty.

There is a huge majority of American citizens waiting for someone to pledge to uphold the laws and secure the borders, let's not ignore them any more.

http://www.gohunter08.com

Hillary's Achilles Heel

Hillary is still singing the "Comprehensive Immigration Reform" tune (all the Dems, really), not realizing it is her swan song.

The only issue I have ever seen 75-80% of Americans agree on is stopping illegal aliens. Any GOP candidate that is credible (not Rudy, McCain, or Huckabee) on this issue could win in a landslide.

The biggest problem is the RNC has sold it's soul to the cheap labor express. They are determined to nominate an amnesty candidate, even if it means losing the election. Stupid Party, indeed.

Religious bigotry?
Well I can say from my own experience, that the people I know who are not Mormon, almost to a man, oppose Romney precisely because he's Mormon. Most of the Mormons I know are not solidly behind Romney, but wish him well at least because he is Mormon. Mormons are as uninspired by the Republican presidential field as anybody else. But when I talk to those who are not Mormon about Romney, all I get is arguments about how Mormons aren't Christian and electing a Mormon president would help the Mormons drag more people down to hell.

So there's my anecdotal evidence up against whatever poll you took that says that nobody opposes him based on religion but only on the issues.

If you are looking for record....
If you are looking for record, consistancy, and conservative values, forget Mit, forget Ruddy, and yeah dont even think about Paul, think FRED.

Dont let the MSM and that includes Fox news keep the truth of Fred Thompson out of your election choices.

Now, I am not going to be like a PAUL freak and go off on a rant, but I encourage you to look at Fred's record, look at Fred's plans. You I am sure you will be happily surprised.

Remember, just look at Fred, get his message and then make your own choices.

Make mine Fred08!

hugh hewitt= John the Baptist
I don't think John the Baptist was looking for a job in Jesus' administration though.

great article

I'm a Mormon.
And Mitt is not my first choice.

It was a year ago that I was posting on this site with titles like, "Who is this Huckabee?"

Too much is being made of Huckabee's liberalism. There is not a conservative in this race, and there isn't one on the horizon. Ron Paul is no conservative--he's as crazy as a loon.

The only one in this field I will NOT vote for under any circumstances is John McLame. His rape of the First Amendment should get him lynched by his party. But who's conservative in this field?

Not Romney, though he's far from the liberal liar this Jackson coot portrays him to be. I was very disappointed in many of the stands Romney took while he was governor--because they directly contradicted the "faith of his fathers." Somebody who really believes in the LDS religion is going to be to the right of Ronald Reagan, not a Jack-Mormon like Harry Reid (who should have been excommunicated long ago).

Mitt seems honest enough most of the time, but the whole abortion thing gives me fits about him.

That said, I must say I'm not a "no abortions for any reason" guy. I allow the rape/incest exception, even knowing that many women will say they were raped when they were not. I allow the "life of the mother" exception, though not the "health" of the mother, since all she has to do is go find a doctor who will say her health is in danger, and there you go.

(Continued below)

I'm a Mormon Part II
But balancing the right to life of the purest, most innocent unborn against the right of a woman not to be forced to carry that innocent one against her will is tough. It's regrettable all around, because two people's rights are in conflict here. In case of rape, the woman's sacred right to choose has been violated. Is an innocent baby's right to live a higher priority than her right not to be forced to incubate that innocent?

Your call. I've made mine. But Romney went beyond that with some of his statements in the Massachusetts days. And I was deeply disappointed in him--because if his faith informed his policy, he is either ignorant of his faith or flat-out believes in something different than I and all the Mormons around me were taught concerning the sacred nature of human life.

He says he learned a lot as governor, and changed his mind. Okay. But he was old enough to learn that stuff many years before, and somehow it didn't sink in. How is that possible for a smart guy?

As a Mormon I was profoundly disappointed by Mitt as Massachusetts governor. I fear my disappointment would be compounded with Mitt as president. I don't need a Mormon president. I need a conservative president just like any other Mormon who understands his religion and its proper place in civil society. I don't care if someday we choose a Mormon to be president.

Yippee. Woo-hoo.

I'm a Mormon Part III
But let's make sure it ain't Harry Reid, okay? It's gotta be somebody who will stand up for the America of James Madison, Alexander Hamilton and John Jay. Mitt may turn out to be that guy.

Maybe he was just saying those liberal things to keep the pitchfork-weilding Massachusetts liberals off his lawn, and now he can switch back to a more comfortable, conservative mode since he's not trying to be elected in Taxachusetts any more.

Is that comforting? Maybe a little, but we already had a prez who could fluently change his stripes depending on the crowd he was trying to please at the moment, and look how that turned out.

Romney has that rap, because of his Massachusetts experience. There's no shaking it except by building a record of consistency in the future. He doesn't have it now.

If he's nominated, I will vote for him happily over Obama or Clinton, because I have absolute confidence he will do a better job than either of them.

However, I'm still waiting for my Messiah, and it ain't Mitt. Where have you gone, Ronnie?

Great point, Candace
Funny, only one critic here does so on evidence, and that is Jackson. All the others simply attack Gregg personally, not substantially. Yet another way in which they act like liberals...

And Bill, I'm starting to lean towards Fred myself. Dumb like a fox, that one and I agree that the media discount him b/c he won't march to the beat of their drummer (do they realize that is a badge of honor for any candidate? Someone who won't change simply to get their attention?)...he may be "slow," as some would call it, but he's steady & consistent, which at this point in the game, is refreshing.

I like Mike, saw him here in Cincinnati...pretty affable guy. After researching his governance in Arkansas, however, I found him to be "Bob Taft on steroids," and folks from Ohio know what that means...EXODUS!!!

Gregg Jackson needs to change the title
"Romney Hoax Fails To Fool Evangelicals That He Is a Conservative"

the title ought to be:

"Huck, the Lord's Canidate, the Only Candidate With a Degree in Theology Fails to Fool Americans That He Knows Anything About American Policies"

Mitt Romney's record NOT his Religion
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the subject, and meat, of this article about Mitt Romney's RECORD? Doesn't the author explain the record?

HOW does the authors citing of Gov. Romney's record make him anti Mormon?

Would the people who just IGNORED THE WHOLE ARTICLE pleas address the issues raised IN the article before they start attacking Gregg Jackson?

Your saying "He's an anti Mormon bigot" would carry more weight if you showed how what he said was wrong.

IS what he said wrong? I don't thinkg so.

I'm from Massachusetts. Think Romney's record was bad? You ain't seen NOTHIN' yet.

Don't think there's worse? There's worse. There's MUCH worse. I'm from Massachusetts.

Gregg, Gregg, Gregg
You just hate Romney with the hot, hot heat of a thousand suns. Geez, why? Did you lose a girl to one of Mitt's sons or something? There's a real whiny quality to your discertation. I think Mitt's the ONLY guy who can defeat Shrillary or B. Hussein.

Enough!
Will everyone drop the blasted mormon stuff. It isn't helping anything. We have people attacking Mitt cause he is mormon, this is not helpful. We have people attacking anyone who criticizes Mitt as bigots regardless wheather their criticism has anything to do with his religion, this is not helpful. And we have people who are attacking Mitt because some people are calling people criticizing Mitt bigots, also not helpful.

I haven't seen more stupidity since I debated liberals last.

I want an article that explains why 1. The things that happened in Mass are Mitt's fault, i.e. how he could have done something more conservative without violating promises he made or laws. 2.Why we have any reason to believe these events have any bearing one what Mitt's is going to do in the future.

Thus far not ONE article I have seen has done that. The other three leading canidates have far more glaring flaws that are clearly their own doing and do imply strongly they will repeat those mistakes.

I'm a Mormon Final
Did y'all notice that in all my writings on Mitt and Huck and why I would vote for whomever I wind up voting, not once did my religion push me in Mitt's direction?

In fact, his uneasy relationship with political consistency made me a bit uneasy about the fact that he is LDS. Like it or not, he's representing us, and flip-floppery is not the best representation.

Here in Amish country, PA, Mormons are far from the strangest religious community. But we treat each other with respect rather than rancor. Utah is different. There is so much anti-Mormon howling there that the place is like two sullen, warring camps of which never the twain shall meet.

It's a shame.

Sure, kooky Jackson and his fundies don't think I'm a Christian and I return the favor by believing his bunch are the ones who aren't the true Christians. But haven't we moved beyond the sectarian warfare stage? I'm willing to let Jackson go on handling his snakes if he'll let me keep reading the Book of Mormon in peace.

We'll meet on election day and vote for the most conservative candidates we can find, then go back to hating each other. I'll vote for one of his if they're conservative enough.

Massachusetts Conservatives
If Greg Jackson is Massachusett's idea of a conservative, then no wonder the state is liberal. Hogwash doesn't even begin to describe his hit piece and brainless gives him more credit for intelligence than he deserves. I have no idea who he's writing about because it sure ain't the Mitt Romney I know.

Candace from Illinois...
Nice "facts."

Kevin McCullough already debunked all that misinformation propaganda from the mass resistance robots.

http://kevinmccullough.townhall.com/columnists/KevinMcCull ough/2007/11/11/romney_critics_not_telling_the_whole_story? page=full&comments=true

I didn't realize Gregg Jackson considers himself a christian...(as Kevin McCullough observed, this is hypocrisy at its finest!!!!)

Gregg
Just one bit of advice - please remove your "Guiliani's My Guy" hat before posting next time. I can see it from here...

http://www.gohunter08.com

Just shut up!
I agree with Bravado and others. This is one of the few things I have read on Townhall that made me think,"Just shut up!" After reading Gregg's last few postings,I won't bother to read more by Mr. Jackson.

Note to Candace from Illinois
Thank You, I will check those out, but I will warn you I am hesitant to believe a group that exists only to attack Romney such as Massresistance. And for future reference I would avoid citing the NY Times as a source around conservatives, they have less than no pull with most of us.

And I am checking your link too Hawk, I didn't miss your comment.

Poor Greg
Hey Greg! Didn't your Mom hold you enough when you were a kid? For crying out loud, the man's been endorsed by National Review, one of the most respected Conservative publications in the world. If you're a bigot, that's fine, just admit it. Mitt is the best Conservative candidate with the best chance of winning this election. How about you write about something Conservative can all agree on, like beating Hillary.

Response to Candace from Illinois
I read extensively, the sources you gave. It soon became clear that there are only 2 issues that Romney is really being criticized on. Abortion and Gay-Marriage.

The abortion one is unconvincing as a "dealbreaker". He converted which I am currently convinced in sincere, thus the only beef is his late passage of a bill for healthcare that included support for abortion, something that the NY Times article you directed me to (watch me ignore my own advice about the NY Times) gives support for the claim he only did it to keep his word. Well if keeps his word then that is something we want in a canidate, since he said he is now oficially against abortion.

On Gay-Marriage, I oppose it and believe it an abomination and will damage traditional marriage. That said, Massresistance seem OBSESSED with it. There is some conflicting behavior from Mitt, supporting an anti gay marriage amendment while at the same time appearing to impose gay marriage on the state. My problem after reading McCullough's article is that it brings into doubt the idea he imposed it on the state. We are left with two possibilities:

1. Romney supports Gay-Marriage, imposed it on Massachusetts and then supported the anti-gay marriage to prop up his conservative credentials.

2. Romney opposes Gay-Marriage, was forced to do what he did either by law or based on earlier campaign promises, but then made sure to support the amendment in order to fix the problem.

All evidence I have seen supports the second argument. Sorry but I still support Romney, I need actual proof of his flip-flopping liberalness, not he says this is why he did what he did but he is really lying because we said so.

Mitt ain't got me fooled, yessireeBob..
Mitt ain't a conservative, just as his father wasn't... I was fooled by W, who didn't fall too far from this Dad's tree...

Mitt
Mitt isn't too far from his Dad, who was no conservative. W fooled me, as he didn't fall too far from Dad either. Fool me once, shame on you... fool me twice, nope.

National Review isn't what it used to be... and an endorsement of Romney, before any primaries isn't what I'd call something to trust.

The good Governor was the gubner of the second most Eurosocialist state in the nation... where Liberty blossomed in 1776, and is far along the road to being completely snuffed.

Don't Get Fooled Again
W didn't fool me (I supported Forbes in 2000); his dad didn't fool me (Kemp in '88, Buchanan in '92)... and Mitt isn't fooling me.

He ran as a liberal Republican, he governed as a liberal Republican.

Huck governed as a moderately liberal governor as well.

Vote for Duncan Hunter.

Thin skins
It kills me to read all the Romniacs here on Townhall. You guys are are beginning to sound like Ron Paul supporters.

I am still seriously considering voting for Romney, but all of the anti-Mormon bigotry talk is making nauseous. Several people I really respect have endorsed Romney, but from all the backlash against Huckabee for even mentioning Mormonism makes me think perhaps his supporters just cannot leave religion alone.

In this article Jackson did not even comment on Romney's religion, but of course the comment section is filled with all the stuff about bigotry. You guys make Romney sound like a liberal victims of some awful hate crime. If Romney is truly a conservative, then deal with the substance of the article and prove it. His record along with about half the Republican field shows that he has not always been a conservative. If he is now, then tell us why we should believe it. I think people can change (for instance Reagan was obviously more conservative later in his career than earlier), but why is it true of Romney.

Christianity was a cult.
To all LDS folks out there, Mormonism is a Christian cult, just like Christianity was a Jewish cult. If you if fact hold the official beliefs of your church, then you do in fact believe something significantly different than orthodox (small d) Christianity.

Your churches' beliefs are as different from mine (I am a traditional Christian by the way) as a Muslims. Get over it. The early Christians were all Jews but held significantly different belief about God and salvation from traditional Jews. Therefore, they could legitimately have been called a Jewish cult, while they were still defining themselves as Jews, which they did for several decades after the founding of the church.

I believe that Jesus is the Jewish Messiah promised in their scriptures, and that Christianity is the true fulfillment of the Jewish religion. Jews disagree with me; so what? I think their wrong, and I'm right, but both sides agree that we are not the same thing. Frankly even early Christians and the Jews of their time acknowledge a significant difference in beliefs.

Practicing Mormons' beliefs are different than mine not by degrees (like Lutherans verses Evangelicals), but by whole orders (like Lutherans verses Muslims). Stop thinking and saying that you are the same, and you won't be called a cult. Get some Christian theology books like Wayne Grudem, who supports Romney, and some of your doctrinal material and compare them. Admit the difference and you will simply be called another religion, which you obviously already are.

Mormon Jesus
I find it so disingenuous - and actually deceitful - that Mormons claim they do not teach that Jesus and Satan are brothers. Let's see, the official doctrine of the LDS says that in the pre-existance Heavenly Father had all of us as spirit children. We are all brothers and sisters to Jesus who was the literal first-born spirit child of Heavenly Father. Lucifer (a Latin name meaning "morning star" that the KJV translators just carried over from the Vulgate but surprisingly was translated from reformed Egyptian into that Latin word) was one of the spirit children of Heavenly Father. Now if Lucifer was a spirit child of Heavenly Father, and Jesus was a spirit child of Heavenly Father, I'd say that makes them brothers! But it also makes all of us siblings with Lucifer/Satan. So why are all the Mormons lying about this fact? Because it proves they are not Christian! The Mormon god is an exalted man ("As man is, God once was; as God is, man may become") who worked his way to godhood, while the Christian God has existed eternally as a spirit and always has been God. Another proof that Mormons aren't Christians! Call yourselves Mormons, not Christians and the main problem disappears! Romney's "gospel" is the one Paul talks about in Gal. 1:8-9 and 2 Cor. 11:3-4

Oh, and notice how Mormons always resort to name-calling: "bigot", "anti-mormon," etc? If one doesn't have a legitimate argument, ad hominem attacks always work!

Is religion a legitimate test?
If a conservative Muslim or a conservative Druid was running for office would any of you Romney supporters think evaluating his religious beliefs was appropriate?

I may still vote for Romney, but I am taking his beliefs into consideration. On the whole, I am convinced that Romney like many Mormons I have met has an understanding of his faith that leads to practical day to day life and support for his church, but he probably has not done a lot of theological thinking.

I do wonder what he believes about the book of Mormon. Is it true? Is it trustworthy? Does it agree with the Bible.? How does it impact his daily life?

I think these are legitimate questions for Romney and everyone else too.

Mormons and polygamy
I can't believe some Mormon actually twisted the scripture to justify polygamy!

Gen. 2:21-24 God gaven Adam ONE wife, and the TWO became one. Sinful men began to multiply for themselves wives, but God said the King was forbidden to do so in Deut. 17:17 (God allows men to sin with polygamy without condoning it). Prov. 5:18-19 and 18:22, and Eccl. 9:9 talk about the good of finding a "wife" and not "wives". Jesus in Mat.19:4-6 tells the people what the original marriage was - the TWO became One. 1 Cor. 7:2 Paul says to let every man have a wife, not wives. Those who were to be elders and deacons - leaders in the church, were specifically commanded to have only one wife (1 Tim. 3:2, 12; Tit. 1:6).

In the Book of Mormon, Jacob 1:15, 2:23-24, 3:5; Mosiah 11:2 and Ether 10:5 all have God condemning polygamy. Doctrine & Covenants 42:22 has Joseph Smith prophesying that a man shall cleave unto his wife "and none else." AH, but God changed His mind when Joseph Smith began committing adultery and suddenly D&C 132 commands polygamy, condemning anyone who denied it, with the threat of death to Joseph's wife Emma if she rejects it.

Joseph Smith preached polygamy because he wanted sanction for his debauchery. And all the leaders who wanted promiscous sex joined in with following this "new and an everlasting covenant."

Oh, and I guess God couldn't remember what happened in Genesis, because in D&C 132 God says He commaned Abraham to take Hagar, while Gen. says it was Sara's idea. And in D&C 132 it says that Isaac was polygamous, but Gen. says he had one wife. Darn, there goes those bothersome details again.

Romney
Hmmm! Not only an intellectual lightweight, but also a religious bigot. Why does anyone take you seriously? Perhaps better said, "Does anyone take you seriously?" You are a disgrace to journalism-Of course, you have a lot of company in that regard.

Cults
I'm a mormon...I believe in the Bible, I believe in Jesus Christ, I believe Jesus is God's only begotten son, I believe Jesus is the Savior of the world, I believe it is only in and through Jesus that we can be saved...

Welcome to my "cult."

Mitt Romney Can Get it Done
As a conservative I had to laugh when that muscle-head Greg(g) Jackson attacked someone of Mitt Romney's class and distinction. Unlike most of the other candidates (both Dems and Repubs) who tell us what they'll do if elected, Mitt Romney has a strong record of things he's already done. Honestly, do you really believe if the Repubs run anyone other than Guliani or Romney we have any chance of beating the Hillary monster or the O'Bama
joke? Come on get real and support a winner.

The article was dead-on accurate.
Summed up Romney very well. Unfortunately, it also sums up why the Republican Party has marginalized itself and has even fallen behind a very weak Democratic Party. The Wall Street/Neo-Con takeover of the Republican Party leadership has tossed the conservative base and is on the way to destroying a once great political party. Listening to RINO talking heads like Rush, Hannity, Medved and Bennett endorsing RINO's like Rudy and Romney is truly sickening. Ditto with most of the Townhall columnists. The conservatives didn't leave the Republican Party. The party left us.

What's up with Hugh?
"Hugh declared in his commentary on the speech that anyone who doesn't agree with him that Mitt is the Republican Savior is "not to be trusted.""
I've never seen such a man-crush as Hewitt has on Romney. Too bad they're both straight-- that much love can't properly express itself with a handshake.

Dictionaries help to define...
I think it would help all the anti-Mormons out there to look in a common dictionary once in a while before opening their mouths (everyone is, of course, allowed to speak freely, but when one misuses common English words, they hurt their own reputations). So, below I have included some definitions straight from Merriam-Webster Online:

Main Entry:
Christian
Pronunciation: \'kris-ch?n, 'krish-\
Function: noun
Etymology: Latin christianus, adjective & noun, from Greek christianos, from Christos
Date: 1526

1 a: one who professes belief in the teachings of Jesus Christ

I don't think it takes a genius to realize that a religion whose official name is The Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-Day Saints qualifies under the standard definition of Christian cited above. The name Mormon was actually dubbed us by other denominations in the early 1800's (isn't that convenient; the fastest way to make people think a religion called the Church of Jesus Christ is not Christian is to give them another nickname). Oh, and for Bluepiper above, who doesn't like being called a bigot, here is another definition for you:

Main Entry:
bigot
Pronunciation: \'bi-g?t\
Function: noun
Etymology: French, hypocrite, bigot
Date: 1660

: a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance

Again, it doesn't take a genius to realize that a person who likes to tell people who profess to be Christians that, regardless of what the dictionary says, they are not actually Christians seems to fit perfectly with the second definition above (but probably not with the first).

Hey Bluepiper...
Since you didn't get a chance to look up 2nd Samuel 12:7-8, I got it for you right here: 7 Then Nathan said to David, "You are the man! This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul. 8 I gave your master's house to you, and your master's WIVES into your arms. I gave you the house of Israel and Judah. And if all this had been too little, I would have given you even MORE. Here's the link: http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2%20Samuel%201 2&version=31

Oh, and if you want to come back to church, we'll still accept you.

Skeptic vantage point
It's funny for a skeptic to watch the Mormons try to out-Christian the Christians. Post beliefs to make you look like just another Christian denomination & hide those that would be disconcerting.

Justifying polygamy even though there was no disparity between the number of males to females. Anything to avoid admitting, probably to yourselves, that your founders were using their positions to get sex-- even from other men's wives.

Pretending that you don't believe wearing magic underwear & knowing secret handshakes will get you into heaven.

Thanks for the chuckles! Yes, you believe in Jesus. I understand Christians not wanting to be associated with such a blatant fraud-- Mormonism is to Christianity what the Nation of Islam is to Islam. I'd understand if Moslems didn't consider NOI to be Islam.

Let's just hope Jesus doesn't answer the prayers of Chuck Norris to elect the Huckster.

And no one's contesting...
the other verses you cited, Bluepiper. But one needs only to look at the Old Testament to see times when God has condoned practices at certain times which were disallowed the rest of the time. Case in point, after the Exodus, when the Israelites entered Canaan, God ordered them to kill everyone, including women and children. Hold on, wasn't murder barred by the Ten Commandments, and pretty much everywhere else in the Bible before and after that event? Sure it was, but God has his purposes, just like he did at certain times for polygamy, in the ancient and modern times.

One more rumor to dispel...
Some people think that Mormons are racist, which the guy on the McLaughlin Report mentioned this past weekend. But I liked Pat Buchanan's response when all the fire was being breathed on him, and he stood up for a religion he isn't even a member of (now there's a real man of principles) and said,"It wasn't Mormons who brought slavery to America, it was Christians." It's seems we all live in glass houses after all.

Christopher
Everything we have we receive from God, and that is the context that God gave Nathan the wives, not that God was condoning polygamy. God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Eve and Sara and Mary and on and on. God's plan has always been one man and one woman, and anything else is abnormal. Jesus reiterated that.

It wasn't murder for the Israelites to kill the Canaanites. The Canaanites had rejected God and were idolaters, and for that God was exterminating them to clease the country, just as He cleansed the world at the Flood.

God has NEVER sanctioned polygamy. Polygamy has always been a part of fallen man's sin. It is sexual immorality, period. And even Joseph Smith agreed when he concocted the Book of Mormon. It wasn't until his position gave him power over women that he couldn't keep his pants on and needed a "revelation" to protect him.

Oh, and Mormons ARE racist. The whole thing about having black skin as a result of failing to takes sides with Christ in the pre-existant realm was based on racism. Mormon teachings prior to 1978 had always been that whites and blacks were not to marry, and Brigham Young said God told him that if a black person had sex with a white person both were to be killed on the spot. Look into your history - Mormon doctrine is racist!

And just because people called themselves Christians as they brought in slaves, that doesn't mean they were Christian any more than Mormons are Christian. It WAS Christians who got slavery abolished.

Ahh, it was the context...
Well, that's way convenient. First of all, read the verse again: the wives were to David, not Nathan. And it doesn't anywhere say what you interpreted, but i still respect everyone's interpretation of the Bible, as I would expect you too.

How convenient too, that when people from Christian denominations brought slavery to America (oh and murdered thousands during the Crusades and Inquisition, too) they weren't really Christians (even though white pastors, ministers, and priests made sure to keep their congregations segregated and slavery alive for hundreds of years), but when they abolished slavery, all of a sudden, now they were Christians. I'm glad, Bluepiper, that you convienently retell history that rewards Christian denominations when they did Christ-like acts, but absolves them when they didn't.

Anyway, this'll be my last post for tonight. I got to study for my law school exams and give attention to my wife and baby girl. Surprised that my hellish religion teaches me an appreciation for family and ambition for higher education? Definitely sounds of the devil.

Well, in closing, I just have one last verse to share with you. After Paul had been persecuting and breathing hate against the followers of Christ, Christ appeared to him on the road to Damascus. One of the things he said to him was "I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard to kick against the pricks."

Clearly the best article on Romney
Romney backers will have few comebacks to Jackson's clear thinking article about Mitt Romney. Conservatives, especially social conservatives, should understand how problematic a Romney nomination would be. Romney is more of a flip-flopper than John Kerry ever was (more often and on bigger issues). I'm just glad to hear there are many more conservatives who don't understand why conservative talk show hosts have gone so ga-ga over the silver-tongued, slick, slippery weasel from Massachusetts? Hugh Hewitt is the worst of the lot. Does Hewitt really believe his own rhetoric, or is he trying to be so open-minded that his brains have fallen out?

Conservatives: 1) If Romney is elected, he will be eaten alive by the media while many social conservatives sit on their hands. 2) We DO NOT have to abandon Republican social values in order to win the White House in 2008!

David vs Nathan
Christopher, that was a slip of thought process - I can read the passage. A Christian follows Christ's teachings; people who claim to be Christians but don't follow his teachings aren't Christian. 1 John 2:4. Crusaders were mostly mercenaries signed up to fight for the non-Christian Catholic Church. That's about it.

Christopher: They do it all the time
"How convenient too, that when people from Christian denominations brought slavery to America (oh and murdered thousands during the Crusades and Inquisition, too) they weren't really Christians (even though white pastors, ministers, and priests made sure to keep their congregations segregated and slavery alive for hundreds of years), but when they abolished slavery, all of a sudden, now they were Christians. And the Founders were xians too. And all morals are xian morals.

In short, all that is good is xian, and all that is bad is not. And they are the arbiters of this truth.

No talent 'talent scout' is the master of this foolishness. Claims Romney isn't a xian while ignoring the Jefferson bible and finding quotes from Franklin that make it appear that he is praying when all is doing is following the conventions of his time.

But hey! The Founders were good, so they _must_ be xian, what? No True Scotsman indeed!

Deja Vu...
What does Mitt Romney and Pete Coors have in common? Both are uber-rich: Romney - $201 million; Coors billions. Romney is and Coors was supported by NewStreamMedia heavyweight Hugh Hewitt. Despite local Republican warnings, Hewitt ferociously supported Coors in 2004 against conservative Bob Schaffer in Colorado’s Republican Senatorial primary. The beer-magnate Coors beat Schaffer, but then lost to populist Democrat Ken Salazar. After the defeat, Hugh Hewitt disavowed any connection to the adverse outcome of the election. Sorry, but I’m getting déjà vu.

Your attempt to attack Romney in your post "Planned Parenthood on Romney conversion" is not remotely convincing. For a few substantial reasons.

First an opinion changing "overnight" in an of itself is not necessarily an indication of a flip for political purposes, I myself have changed views on a half dozen positions after having an epiphany or an excellant argument I hadn't thought of, thus it is not necessarily damning to change suddenly.

Second, when a supposed conservative such as yourself quotes a NARAL and a Planned Parenthood representative as evidence on someones weak abortion stance you must forgive me if it fails to convince. I wouldn't trust a NARAL or Planned Parenthood representative to tell me the correct time let alone trust their judgement concerning the abortion credentials of a conservative.

I would vote for Huck
If Huckabee is nominated I will vote for him.
I am a Mormon.
If Huckabee is nominated I will vote for him.
If Rudy is Nominated I will vote for him.
If McCain is Nominated I will vote for him.
If Romney is nominated I will vote for him.
The same is true for the second tier candidates.

I will vote for any of them before I will fial to vote or vote for a third party candidate and turn the White House over to any of the Dems, especially Hillary.

Will the rest of you promise to do the same?

If Romney or any other candidate is nominated and the religious right fails to back him up,
and installs the left in the executive branch, the country will never forgive them.

The best Townhall article of the year!
Yes, finally a conservative writer calls out out Hugh Hewitt for the shameless Romney flak that he is! About time someone did this. As the Romney vessel continues to sink, be prepared for more vitriol from the Romniacs like Hewitt and the other so-called conservative pundits trying in vain to bail out the water and tell us how ashamed we should all be for not pitching in with our own buckets.

I for one couldn't be happier that Romney's phony campaign has finally been revealed for the sham that it is.

(By the way...still no response from Gregg when his misinformation gets corrected. Nope. Nothing.)

1. Gregg misquoted Hewitt - Hugh said Romney's speech was magnificient and anyone who says otherwise is not to be trusted as an analyst.

2. According to drudge report

http://www.drudgereport.com/flashhu.htm

Mitt has been attacked more by Democrats than any other candidate...Huck the least. That truly says something about which GOP nominee will run well against the Democrats...at least we see it from the Dem's perspective.

Romney has become famous here in MA for saying anything to get his way, no matter what his true feelings might be. His flip flops on the abortion issue are legendary around here, for example. The gay issue, because of its interest to the conservative block of voters desired by a Romney candidacy, has become a ripe target for his crashing rhetoric. Another thing he is fond of doing is make harsh, sarcastic statements, either himself, or through his mouthpieces, then when the inevitible outcry comes, blame it on being 'misunderstood', or the words of someone 'not authorized' to speak for him on this issue. Of course, he has no problem basking in the intended benefit of the barbs.

Mellor
The reason Christians can so easily dismiss historical figures or ogranizations who killed in the name of Christ as "non Christians" is simple: they did not obey the teachings of Christ.

Christ told us to "wipe the dust from our feet, and leave that place..." when our blessings are rejected. He did not say, "Put them in thumb screws and kill their children til they submit!"
Had he pushed for such actions, then the inquisitors and crusaders would have been Christians, since they were only following his will. They were not, and thus can not be called Christians. Saying you are a Christian while burning some "non believer's" house down to convert them, is akin to saying, "I love you" when you are beating your spouse to death. Both are self contradictory.

Mellor...and
You may say, "isnt that convenient!". I would agree that it is convenient, but sometimes what is convenient as an argument, also happens to be true. This is such a case.

Obviously not, but think about the assumptions of your argument; if you follow them to their conclusions, my question doesn't seem unfair at all.

Warm wishes.

Silly, Poorly-Researched Article
Nice try Jackson. Way to distort Mitt's record. You're wrong in lots of spots. But you did hit upon one point with which I agree. It's very odd that lots of the Smart conservative leaders support Mitt, but lots of the Dumb conservatives do not. What might that tell you? Hmmm.... There's a good reason conservative leaders are beginning to coalesce around Romney. They want to back a horse that can unite the fractured Republican party keep Billary out of the White House...and Romney is the only one who can do both.

Romney Hoax
Gregg Jackson is right on target. Romney is merely a poser/front-man for the homosexuals and abortionmurderers. He's been trying to cultivate suckers here in Iowa since BEFORE the Nov. 2006 elections, but enough of us get to see him up close that he hasn't a prayer.

Mitt Romney simply cannot win!
Give up on Romney already people...he has no chance. The fact is Christians will not vote for him. He will split the party even more than Ross Perot ever did. No Christian can support him morally. Romney has no chance he need to drop out of the race, he is a disaster in waiting for republicans.

Yes vote for "moral" Christians

"No Christian can support him(Romney) morally"

Yes, Christians, vote for "moral Christians" like Carter, Clinton, Hucabee, Edwards, Obama and Giuliani.

After all, to Hagar and like minded "Christians", any "Christian" will do.

"Born again,
free from sin,
never gonna have to work again,
Got that Jesus sticker on my car,
Kill my kids and beat my wife,
That's alright, its eternal life,
cuz i've been saved from sin."

David Huckabee tortures & kills dog ...
and then Gov. Huckabee tried to cover it up. Can this be true???!! I just read this on Newsweek. It's all over the internet. The facts are sickening. Not only was Huckabee's son involved in the horrific abuse of an animal, but Huckabee apparently tried to cover it up. Also, I read that David Huckabee tried to board an airplane with a loaded pistol in his carry-on suitcase. What??!! This is going to be a HUGE blow against Huckabee with those of us who love animals, and also with those of us who don't appreciate parents who try to cover up their children’s crimes. Huckabee and family really are a piece of work. No matter what Huckabee's video says, this will NOT be a “Merry Christmas” for his family who claims to espouse Christian values.

I like Huckabee or Giuliani. NOT ROMNEY.
Romney's record is the opposite of what he is saying. Pick a subject, and see. Go to http://massresistance.org/romney/ and find out why Romney did not have to order his clerks to redefine marriage and then threaten them with firings if they did not marry same-sex couples. Massachusetts has some of the toughest language in its constitution restricting judicial power.

On abortion, Romney's mother ran for Senate on a platform supporting abortion in 1970. His father was involved in organizing a liberal pro-abortion wing of the Mormon church.

When the Boy Scouts wanted to volunteer for the Salt Lake City Olympics, they were refused even as the call was going out for more volunteers. Powerful pro-homosexual groups lobbied to keep the Boy Scouts away. (NewsMax.com, Dec. 18, 2000) Romney said in 1994 that he believes homosexuals should be allowed to be scoutmasters.

A pro-family group very critical of Romney had its weekly radio show abruptly cancelled in May 2007, after 2 years on the air. Salem Communication's star Hugh Hewitt and Dean Barnett are big Romney supporters. MassResistance believes "that Romney was probably the most pro-abortion and pro-gay rights Republican official in the nation for the last decade.".

Bain Capital (Romney is still a silent partner) bought Clear Channel Communications (home to many conservative talk show hosts, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, and others) for $19 billion in Nov 2006, completing the sale last week.

I've seen the emails over the years to fight the latest conservative battle, to contact the Governor. Now some pro family groups (after large contributions to their causes) are supporting Romney, but to me he is the worst possible candidate for president.

I'm tired of all the big money and tricks. We have some serious problems to solve in America. It's not funny anymore.

We Christians will not vote for Romney!
Millions of Christians will STAY HOME on election day if Romney is the Republican candidate. Minus the Christian vote, it's impossible for Romney to win in the general election.

Romney advocated and installed GAY MARRIAGE in Massachusetts.

Long a supporter of abortion-rights and a friend of Planned Parenthood, Romney advocated and supported ABORTION ON DEMAND in Massachusetts (until his politically motivated flip flop in 2004).

Romney installed a socialized health care system in Massachusetts.

For all the Religious Nuts...
"Isn't it amazing how self-pitying and self-aggrandizing the religious freaks in this country are? It's not enough that they can make straight-faced professions of "faith" at election times and impose their language on everything from the Pledge of Allegiance to the currency. It's not enough that they can claim tax exemption and even subsidy for anything "faith-based." It's that when they are even slightly criticized for their absurd opinions, they can squeal as if being martyred and act as if they are truly being persecuted."

Thank you Gregg
Thanks Gregg for getting the word out about this guy. The Mittster is just no good. There's something Hillary-like about this guy. I still recall the debate Mitt had with "The Swimmer" back in 1994 when asked whether he would support Reaganite policies, he came back and said he didn't even vote for Reagan. This in spite of the fact that Reagan won not once but TWICE in MA! I had a feeling back then that there was something wrong with him, then after being elected Gov. in 2002, he showed his true colors.

As for who I am backing, I will vote for any of the Republicans but Mitt. If Mitt gets the nomination, then I will pray for the country because we'll wind up with Hillary.

Anyway Thanks again Gregg for all your work here and on Pundit Review radio and web. All the best for 2008!
