Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WASHINGTON -- There once was an Indianapolis concert featuring 50 pianos. Splendid instruments, pianos. Still, 50 might have been excessive. As is today's chorus summoning us to save the planet.

In the history of developed democracies with literate publics served by mass media, there is no precedent for today's media enlistment in the crusade to promote global warming "awareness." Concerning this, journalism, which fancies itself skeptical and nonconforming, is neither.

*** Special Offer ***

The incessant hectoring by the media-political complex's "consciousness-raising" campaign has provoked a comic riposte in the form of "The Goode Family," an animated ABC entertainment program on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. Eastern time. Cartoons seem, alas, to be the most effective means of seizing a mass audience's attention. Still, the program is welcome evidence of the bursting of what has been called "the green bubble."

Gerald and Helen Goode, their children and dog Che (when supervised, he is a vegan; when unsupervised, squirrels disappear) live in a college town, where T-shirts and other media instruct ("Meat is murder"), admonish ("Don't kill wood") and exhort ("Support our troops ... and their opponents"). The college, where Gerald works, gives students tenure. And when Gerald says his department needs money to raise the percentage of minority employees, his boss cheerily replies, "Or we could just fire three white guys. Everybody wins!" Helen shops at the One Earth store, where community shaming enforces social responsibility: "Attention One Earth shoppers, the driver of the SUV is in aisle four. He's wearing the baseball cap."

The New York Times television critic disapproves. The show "feels aggressively off-kilter with the current mood, as if it had been incubated in the early to mid-'90s, when it was possible to find global-warming skeptics among even the reasonable and informed." That is a perfect (because completely complacent) sample of the grating smugness of the planet-savers, delivered by an entertainment writer: Reasonable dissent is impossible. Cue the pianos.

"The Goode Family" does not threaten Jonathan Swift's standing as the premier English-language satirist. But when a Goode child apologizes to his parent for driving too much, and the parent responds, "It's OK ... what's important is that you feel guilty about it," the program touches upon an important phenomenon: ecology as psychology.

In "The Green Bubble: Why Environmentalism Keeps Imploding" (The New Republic, May 20), Ted Nordhaus and Michael Shellenberger, authors of "Break Through: Why We Can't Leave Saving the Planet to Environmentalists," say that a few years ago, being green "moved beyond politics." Gestures -- bringing reusable grocery bags to the store, purchasing a $4 heirloom tomato, inflating tires, weatherizing windows -- "gained fresh urgency" and "were suddenly infused with grand significance."

Green consumption became "positional consumption" that identified the consumer as a member of a moral and intellectual elite. A 2007 survey found that 57 percent of Prius purchasers said they bought their car because "it makes a statement about me." Honda, alert to the bull market in status effects, reshaped its 2009 Insight hybrid to look like a Prius.

Nordhaus and Shellenberger note the telling "insignificance," as environmental measures, of planting gardens or using fluorescent bulbs. Their significance is therapeutic, but not for the planet. They make people feel better:

"After all, we can't escape the fact that we depend on an infrastructure -- roads, buildings, sewage systems, power plants, electrical grids, etc. -- that requires huge quantities of fossil fuels. But the ecological irrelevance of these practices was beside the point."

The point of "utopian environmentalism" was to reduce guilt. During the green bubble, many Americans became "captivated by the twin thoughts that human civilization could soon come crashing down -- and that we are on the cusp of a sudden leap forward in consciousness, one that will allow us to heal ourselves, our society, and our planet. Apocalyptic fears meld seamlessly into utopian hopes." Suddenly, commonplace acts -- e.g., buying light bulbs -- infused pedestrian lives with cosmic importance. But:

"Greens often note that the changing global climate will have the greatest impact on the world's poor; they neglect to mention that the poor also have the most to gain from development fueled by cheap fossil fuels like coal. For the poor, the climate is already dangerous."

Now, say Nordhaus and Shellenberger, "the green bubble" has burst, pricked by Americans' intensified reluctance to pursue greenness at a cost to economic growth. The dark side of utopianism is "escapism and a disengagement from reality that marks all bubbles, green or financial." Re-engagement with reality is among the recession's benefits.

PLEASE slit the country in two
Let the Cons wallow in their welfare state, and let the educated Liberals run things as they out to be.

Can you imagine if the red states tried to run things on their own? How could they survive without all of that welfare money? Blue states would profit from the split.

And then we would wait as all of those educated Liberal area continued to teach facts, while the Cons would continue to make fun of those Liberal bastions of education and teach ID.

Also, poor Con-America would have so many people without medical insurance that the working class would simply fall apart. Of course any health statistics already show this, but let this play out for a decade or two and watch the wealthy Cons wonder why their workers are no longer productive when sick or dead.

How long before the Con-America comes begging for a bailout? They already do. We already have good examples of Con world, and it is not fun for anybody but the most wealthy. Let the games begin.

Split the Country in Two
Liberals to one side, Conservatives to the other.

We know what will happen. The Liberal half will devolve into a full blown socialist state and anyone with any sense of individuality and belief in work who didn't step to the Conservative side during the initial split will want to immigrate to the Right side.

The Conservative side will merely be the nation the US was always envisioned to be and was for most of our history.

We already know both sides of this story so let the Left go so they stop bothering, nagging, burdening, and dictating to us.

75 degrees in Arkansas today
And it's June.

NOAA reduced its hurricane estimate for this season because of lower sea surface temperatures from 6 to 5.

Environmentalism is a religion for the irreligious and a luxury for the upper middle and upper classes who already have theirs and want to deny everyone else the ability to climb the ladder of success.

I don't suffer from any form of Liberal guilt and therfore am able to think rationally.

"Liberalism is the triumph of emotion over reason." - Me

If the *greens* have their way
you will soon have $1200-$2000 higher more to pay for elec. a year and a $10 gallon gas charge to make enviros feel better. It will make you feel poorer.

Aw come on

Everyone knows by now if we don't bow to the goricle and give him and his UN agenda 21 global fascist our money and give up our way of life the oceans will swallow us all up, if we don't burn up first.

It is a funny show
The producers went to a local college campus on Earth Day and filmed the interviews with students. Morons, every one of them, but green! One girl was blathering on about how cows produce enormous amounts of methane and how beef is inefficient as a food product because it takes 22 calories of grass to produce 8 calories of meat. Right, that cow is her competition for the grass!

Environmentalism is the new religion. Is Algore the high priest?

Down the Rabbit Hole we go!!!
The green elites want US to develop windmills, solar cells (14% efficiency) and tidal power but NEVER nuke power. France gets almost 100% of their power from nukes but the No Nukes luddites never complain.

Now we're supposed the look the other way while two absolutely psycho regimes (Iran and N. Korea) go nuclear for electricity (suuuure) while Iran sits on 30% of the untapped oil in the world

WHAT is in the water in Foggy Bottom?

Soli Deo Gloria!!

Thanks for the heads up, George
Sounds like there's a new show about to get programmed into my TIVO.

Indeed
Does it not appear absurd for billionaires, limousined to their private jets taking them to exotic locales, often at our expense, shouting orders to us to freeze to death in our tiny homes, risk our lives in little clown cars that will cost $60K and will be able to drive 30 miles before an 8 hour recharge, and forage the earth for nuts and berries?

But this is America in the 21st century: an idiocracy governed by kleptocrats. What do we expect from a nation whose main concerns are Octo-moms, John and Kate, and American Idol?

Doesn't it depress the hell out of you to know that you have to live amongst such stupid mouth breathers? Look at your fellow citizens. Big fat retards with their tattoos, cut off shorts and sleeveless T shirts, unable to pour urine out of boots with instructions on the heels.

Thanks Boomers and our failed education system. Thanks all you GOP politicians who couldn't find the courage to fight communism in our own country and letting every mongoloid group of third worlders invade our shores and vote themselves free stuff.

Now look what we've done. Jesus Christ!

SDF, do your homework
Aposematic is right. There are periods in history where CO2 was double what it is today. Also, increased levels that we now experience are helping farmers keep up with record demands for food due to overpopulation - something the Dems and Bama plan for America.

The Only Solution
Well said, George. Those, especially those leaders, who think that we are going to feed, clothe, transport and house 300 million people using energy sources that are more than 1% green are truly OUT OF TOUCH WITH REALITY. Hence, our fearless leader is out of touch with reality.

However, you're not going to think it is ALL a fantasy, when ALL of your living expenses double because of CAp and Trade. The one thing your article doesn't tell us is how to stop these morons. The answer is this: WE HAVE TO EXCORIATE THE ADVERTISERS WHO SPEND MONEY WITH THE MEDIA INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX.

Don't buy anything advertised on MSNBC, or NBC, ABC or CBS until their NEWS programs return to the center. Furthermore, let the advertisers know how you feel about the rape of consumers which is about to take place.

THanks to ACORN, Eric Holder and the graveyards of America, we no longer have the votes to elect responbible leaders, but financially, we are still the demographic they want to sell to.

ABC
The network that brings us John Stossel and the Goode Family also aired last Tuesday something called 2100. It was all about how awful the world will be by the year 2100 if we do not address climate change and immediately cease & desist from burning fossil fuels. I only caught the last 15 minutes or so, but it was enough to know what they were going on about for 2 hours. Glad I didn't waste any more time than that on it. Watching the Red Wings loose a play-off game was so much more worth my time.

"Point blank if you don't like those comments maybe you should stop and think about the site you are on..."

Oh but I do like these comments!! I just think that they are way off base with reality, and feel an obligation to at least give you access to facts (though I can't help but poke fun at times). I also really enjoy looking at the opposition's viewpoint. You can't come down on an issue correctly if you don't understand both sides of the argument.

Where else can you find arguments against climate change that hinge on "God's will"? The basic outline of the scientific method rules out using superstition and God as explanations, and I just love people over here talking about the corruption of scientific agencies, while presenting arguments based on God. Or how man is so arrogant to think he can alter God's climate. Its a "sit back and ride the train to doomsday" mentality over here, and I get a kick out of it.

I also draw comics for a local paper, and find a stunning amount of my material on this website.

Inconvienent cold.....
Anyone watching Gore's film in the year 2015 will conclude that Al is a big fat idiot!

They'll be asking where the hell the 20 foot rise in the oceans is? Why the planet is colder instead of warmer? And most especially why anyone would believe a liberal with a agenda on anything so basic as saying he wanted to save the planet!

Mac Moore
I can help but get annoyed at the liberal left. Each year, they usually get what they want, but the next year, want more and so on. I for one resent it. They are eating our way of life one bite at a time, year after year.

sdf
However most of the comments that you posted as being in the "inflammitory" or "contriversial" would not be to most of us here. Most of us here feel that those comments are just plain old fashioned common sense. Point blank if you don't like those comments maybe you should stop and think about the site you are on, then switch over to Moveon.org, HuffPuff (or as I like to think Puff the Magic Dragon...they have to be smokin something to think that way --- now that was inflammitory, but it wasn't contriversial because I am not on Puff the maggic dragon's website posting my opinion...unlike you who is on our site posting your crap.

Excuse me...
...I must go. I suddenly have the urge to go on a road trip in my 2001 GMC 6.0 AWD C3 pickup. I feel like driving aggressively too. For anyone to suggest to me that I have a remote ability to control climate, I have a big pinkish behind for them to kiss. I'm sure one flight by Al Gore leaves a bigger "carbon footprint - not my term" than I leave in an entire year. Does anyone know how many dumpsters are emptied each week from the Gore residence, and are they "green" recycle or just regular trash? This fad will change like the past ones.

P, you're asking too much
Trolls don't want to understand, they only want to disrupt and demean. That is why I place them on "ignore" once I see they are a troll. Why continuously keep taking the same hill with these people. You will find that you are like Sisyphus rolling that stone up the hill only to have to keep doing it over and over to no avail.

This particular troll laughs at people and demeans their lack of knowledge while proudly displaying for all to see that he is a complete fool. He tells a poster to study EVS-101 while it is he that doesn't even understand basic photosynthesis that any 5th grader knows.

It really is funny when you don't let them tick you off too much. I do find you are much better off to just ignore them though. This one's moniker is really fitting, though, some dumb fool.

troll comments
The logical fallacy of the straw man combined with ad hominem attacks to not arguments make. Try examining data not based on computer models with built in bias, try using common sense, and try not to be a troll yourself. Examine the best arguments of both sides, and then reach your conclusions.

Despotism Is More Efficient Than Freedom
At one time, Conservatives led the way with Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, teaching good stewardship through Leadership.

Liberals, on the other hand dismiss leadersip as not good enough -- they prefer dictatorship through Political Correct fiats from Government. For a Liberal, Freedom is so over-rated.

-I blame the environmental movement for the latest economic problems. (rethinker for head of the Fed!)

-Now, because a venal political movement wants more control over the people than is Constitutional. we must give up inexpensive fossil fuels so that the earth does not overly warm (it was 28 in front of the cabin yesterday morning, June 3 in Wisconsin).(foggytrucker needs an explanation of the difference between weather and climate)

-Also lowering CO2 in the atmosphere will kill billions of green plants that need CO2 to live. This effectively reduces CO2 naturally. (Aposematic needs to retake EVS 101)

-I feel the same way about the idiots who don't see that stores are cynically making money off of their reusable bags that idiots purchase rather than just using free bags from the stores. (Lulu needs to be told that reusable bags are given away at all ecological, sustainability, and conservation focused events)

Sarah "the brain" Palin even believes in climate change. It is now impossible to hold run for national office w/o a plan for Co2 emissions. You guys have been fighting a losing argument for a long time, and scientists are no longer going to limit themselves to public opinion while you muddy the water. Apparently some of you have forgotten the Clean Air Amendments of 1990. The EPA will eventually control this issue.

George
guilt only works if you have a conscience.

Vegetarian cat!
We used to attend a weekly storage auction in a large warehouse. The owners of the auction were vegetarians. Anyways, during the auction a cat named "Benny" would circulate among the bidders looking for affection but mostly looking for a snack. Benny was so hungry that he would eat whatever the bidders would share with him, even potato chips or pretzels. If he heard a bag of snacks being opened he was there in a flash.

One week, my wife being a cat lover, brought a can of cat food for Benny. It was tuna as I remember. She opened the can and Benny was in heaven! Real food! One of the owners noticed this and asked my wife to not bring cat food to Benny again because Benny was a vegetarian. Benny, the vegetarian cat, lived in a warehouse full of mice. Hmmm!

It's heartening to see that...
...among the comments so far, the only troll so far is sdf (some dumb fu..er? or maybe clean it up to some dumb fool?)

For my 2 cents' worth, I want the temperature in my neighborhood to range strictly between 72 and 82 degrees day and night 24/7/365. Don't want any more 100 degree days in the summer or below freezing weather in the winter (well, maybe a white Cristmas every year, but that's it). Because this is righteous, I want it that way all over the world. BTW, rain should only fall at specified times and in sufficient quantities to ensure no need to water plants, etc. Now, get coercive centralist government to work on this ASAP!

Making fun of greenies...yay!
A show that makes fun of greenies. How great is that!! My favorite past time.

BTW, there's about a 2 min. advert of it on youtube that is very funny.

Apocalypse psychology
It seems that people are prone to fear that the world will come to an end. This is a part of religious doctrine and various Christian groups have predicted the end of the world on various dates throughout history. Of course, they've been wrong so far. Secular parallels include atomic war, pandemics, global cooling, and now global warming. All of these theories have fervent adherents who are quite emotionally involved. I wonder why we are so prone to this type of thinking.

The Goode Family
I laughed through the whole hour last night. It lampooned the greens wonderfully. There was a takeoff of E.L.F. (Animals Or Else) that 'rescued' a shaved raccoon, for example. It wasn't mean-spirited, either. The characters may have been ridiculous sometimes, but they were also decidedly human. It not only reminded me of my sister's family, but reminded me why I don't visit them too often. And the star of the show? Che, the vegan dog with a mania for eating anything that moves.

Oh boy!
"Here's a fact I'm sure you refuse to acknowledge..."

I acknowledge that the USPS has a semi-monopoly, and I think the laws should be relaxed. Blow your mind? But just remember why it was required in the first place. History is important.

Private mail delivery services would only deliver to centralized locations. People would have to travel huge distance to collect their mail, and still ended up paying a pretty penny. The system was inefficient, and unhealthy for such a vast nation in which communication is so crucial. You can thank the USPS for the rural letter carriers. On top of that, the privatized mail delivery services were shifting the blame on to the government, consistently trying to secure government funding for their sub par service while pointing the finger when people complained. Privatized industry wanted government to construct delivery routes for them.

I am hardly defending the USPS as a whole, I am merely pointing out that the reason it was established was because private industry failed at providing the service as needed. So to use the USPS as an example of how poorly the government runs a company is very ironic.

Stick to your guns: the DMV.

sdf
Here's a fact I'm sure you refuse to acknowledge:

Congress, in the 1870s, made the US Postal Service a legal monopoly -- only the USPS is allowed to deliver First Class mail. They cited as their reason that if they were to allow private competition, there would be no way the USPS could compete in the market.

The USPS protects this monopoly extremely aggressively. They once fined the Boy Scouts of America $50,000 because the Scouts were putting Christmas cards in people's mail boxes.

Furthermore, if you are an employee of the USPS, and you are too good at your job, you will be fired. Mail carriers get fired if they are able to complete what is supposed to be an 8-hour delivery route in less than 8 hours. They claim efficient workers make the idiots who work at the Post Office "feel bad".

So much for your "the USPS is a well run government institution" notion.

sdf
"Another well educated conservative who understands the REAL cause of the economic crisis."

Pardon me I am a con and I do understand the current financial mess. It started with a progressive idea that was made law in 1913 and resulted in the Federal Reserve, a central bank. They artificially invent money and artificially control interest rates, nothing market driven there, they try to control the markets. They provided too much money at to low an interest rate and the markets took that money with the consent and encouragement of the government and created a housing bubble and it burst. Story is more involved but that is a nice summary.

Al Gore's Desire to Debate?
Democrats' disinvitation of UK’s Lord Christopher Monckton to present his position (debate?) on global warning is all you need to know about the Left's religiosity on the issue.
The proper condemning word that the Left is searcing for - I'll help them out here - is HERESY.
They should adopt it, and I won't demand credit for the suggestion.

The Post Office
"The go'vt can't run the Post Office..."

You do know why the US Postal Service was established right? Look into it and bask in the glory of your new knowledge. You will see the irony of citing the post office as an industry government cannot run.

You could cite UPS, however they're unionized and pull in billions (with a B) in profit (not revenue) yearly, which wouldn't make sense in your bubble.

Aw shucks
"I blame the environmental movement for the latest economic problems."

Another well educated conservative who understands the REAL cause of the economic crisis.

The worse users of energy
are entertainers.

It costs fortunes just to light a stage. One tungsten light bulb is equal to all the flashes you may use taking pix in a lifetime.

I once saw them filming Law and Order in uptown NYC at night with an entire block ringed by battery trucks the size of 18-wheelers, all for the lights and sounds on the outdoor set.

Then Tom Cruise and formerly Paul Newman drive Formula I cars that use 10 gallons to the foot.

The *green*n car market has never been more than 1% of sales, so even if GM and Chrysler can double or triple that number, it still means no significant purchases by consumers. As long as those cars are overpriced and underperforming, then GM and Chrysler and the Obama Car Industry and all of our tax dollars are dead.

The go'vt can't run the Post Office (a society's necessity) or Amtrak (when people want trains as an alternative), then it surely can't run a car co. What drivel and arrogance. Turn Dems. in Cong. out in 2010.

Bork Sotomayor.

AliveInHim
Hey, youngster. You'd better be careful about your acts of defiance, or some bureaucrat will seize control of your thermostat. Oh, wait. . .bureaucrats are trying to do that anyway. Carry on, then.

I think you know the answer to your question: only our betters have the requisite knowledge and wisdom. Al Gore has the discernment needed to set the global temperature. Barack Obama has mystical insight into how big a vehicle you need. Sheryl Crow's spirit guide made her privy (wordplay intended) to the right amount of toilet paper to be used in each sit-down session. And so on.

Hope all is well with you.

When I see
someone driving a Prius I can't help but dislike them on basic principle. I feel the same way about the idiots who don't see that stores are cynically making money off of their reusable bags that idiots purchase rather than just using free bags from the stores.

Lately though, what is most irritating is shopping at Borders or stores with similar work forces (college students or college grads with no better job prospects due to majoring in women's studies or such). I will buy 4 or more books and they will not bag the items -- they sit there on the counter until I ask for a bag and then I get glares, sneers, or sighs. I have been at stores where they seem to want me to carry 10 items out unbagged no matter how awkward or heavy.

HAHAHAHA!
"Also lowering CO2 in the atmosphere will kill billions of green plants that need CO2 to live. This effectively reduces CO2 naturally. With fewer green plants the greenies CO2 reduction "SCAM" will actually put more CO2 in the atmosphere because there will be less plants to naturally consume CO2. This sounds like a circular argument and it is except for the initial green plant reduction until an equilibrium point is reached."

Townhall environmental science!! Classic!

Flawless logic! Must have gone to one of those conservative colleges.

First John Stossel,
now _The Goode Family_. ABC is verging on heresy. I wonder how long this nonconformity will last.

During the 'Lights Out'
campaign, or whatever it was called, I turned on every light in the house, including the lights in our walk-in closet and the garage. Our place blazed like a Christmas tree compared to the darker homes around us. But it was oh-so-worth it. These smug, self-righteous ninnies DESERVE to sit in the dark with their thumbs up their nether regions, if you ask me.

I ask again-who gets to determine the proper temperature for any place on Earth, or the proper amount of CO2?

Advice to Republiwhigs
You can attack the greenies (see posts here). You can attack the race industry and do the country some good (see the following):

http://townhall.com/columnists/ThomasSowell/2009/06/04/out_ of_context_part_iii

Greenies Are Guilty
The greenies should feel guilty--they are promoting the greatest "SCAM" in the history of mankind.

The "SCAM" is "man made global warming".

This "SCAM" is 1000+ times greater than Madoff's scam.

Also lowering CO2 in the atmosphere will kill billions of green plants that need CO2 to live. This effectively reduces CO2 naturally. With fewer green plants the greenies CO2 reduction "SCAM" will actually put more CO2 in the atmosphere because there will be less plants to naturally consume CO2. This sounds like a circular argument and it is except for the initial green plant reduction until an equilibrium point is reached.

Good article
It's a good article but it could have been better if the author took it one step further. Liberal's disdain for religion stems from this. Liberalism and religion compete for people desire to alleviate their guilt. Christians believe it is being moral and commuting with God. Liberals want to replace that with one of their wacky ideas.

I'm kicking myself
for not setting the TIVO to record that last night. It sounds as if this is a great show. I'll be sure to set up the TIVO tonight to record it every week.

A Cartoon.
I'm glad to see a cartoon recognizes that there's a market for the lampooning of the snotty condescending overeducated idiots who want to destroy the rural way of life in this country.
The drudgery of rural food production has been replaced, personal transportation has been made fast and affordable, and not only has grinding poverty become the exception not the rule in rural america, but cheap food has made urban life better. All because of inexpensive fossil fuels.
Now, because a venal political movement wants more control over the people than is Constitutional. we must give up inexpensive fossil fuels so that the earth does not overly warm (it was 28 in front of the cabin yesterday morning, June 3 in Wisconsin).
But Republiwhigs will not defend our ways. All they can do is bleat "we're green too" - while rural folks are the true stewards of the environment. We need an opposition party in this country. Now.

Life empty,
need a cause or maybe religion? Environmentalism is a hobby that will make you feel warm inside. Warning, you will need faith to accept the global warming bible.

Mike Judge!
He's a genius, imho.

Beavis & Butthead, King of the Hill, Officespace and now the Goode Family. Talk about a guy who understands all the facets of the American psyche.

Triviality as a way of life
It would seem that the environmental movement has succeeded in trivializing life to the point that there is n o time to ponder great ideas. Very like the fundamentalist movements in any culture, as in St. Augustin, who in my opinion instigated the Dark Ages, we have been shamed into a myopia that stymies progress.

Belly buttons are neat things to look at once. After that, it's a big new world, with big new adventures.

I blame the environmental movement for the latest economic problems. First, environmentalism is expensive. Second, it kept our eyes off the business ball long enough to let the scalawags move in and take advantage of our inttention.

In short, we were forced to be so busy examining the minnow-like snail darter that we missed the shark who ate us.
