Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

WASHINGTON -- In 1966, the price of eggs rose to a level that President Lyndon Johnson judged, God knows how, was too high. There were two culprits -- supply and demand -- and Johnson's agriculture secretary told him there was not much that could be done. LBJ, however, was a can-do fellow who directed the U.S. surgeon general to dampen demand by warning the nation about the hazards of cholesterol in eggs.

Johnson, the last president with a direct political connection to Franklin Roosevelt, was picked by FDR in 1935 to be Texas director of the New Deal's National Youth Administration. Two years later, Johnson came to Congress, a rung on the ladder that led to glory as Egg Czar. Today, with Washington experiencing a Roosevelt revival, Johnson's spirit, too, goes marching on as the federal government permeates the economy with politics.

Or not. In an interview with Business Week, Rep. Barney Frank, the effervescent Massachusetts Democrat who chairs the Financial Services Committee, was asked, concerning the auto industry, "How do you make sure the government doesn't meddle too deeply in day-to-day operations and bring politics -- like a push for green cars -- into the equation?" Frank replied: "Oh, well, a push for green cars is very much a part of what we're involved in. We don't think that's politics." So, when the government, its 10 thumbs stuck deep in the economy, uses its power to compel an industry to pursue the objectives of the political party that controls both of the government's political branches, that is not politics.

Business Week: "Should GM acquire Chrysler?" Frank: "I'm not competent to say." Frank's humility is selective: He obviously thinks he is competent to say what kind of cars should be made.

Business Week: "Does Congress realize how few hybrids have been sold, as it pushes Detroit to make them, and will Congress give consumers greater incentives to buy these cars?" Frank: Those who are "blaming the auto companies forget to blame somebody else -- the consumers. In the recorded history of America, no one was ever forced at gunpoint to buy a Hummer. But we do believe that the combination of genuine concern about global warming and energy efficiency means people are now ready to buy these cars." Consumers are such a disappointment to Congress. But what Congress really believes is that people are not ready to buy those cars at a price that reflects the costs of making them. Why else has it voted tax subsidies for buyers?

Forty years ago, Vietnam was a disaster and the Great Society was a disappointment as Johnson limped back to Texas. Today, there is more Johnsonian confidence in government's competence than at any time since Johnson's policies shattered such confidence. The resurgence of confidence began under today's Texan president.

The 1996 Republican platform said: "The federal government has no constitutional authority to be involved in school curricula. ... That is why we will abolish the Department of Education (and) end federal meddling in our schools." One year ago, the Department of Education announced: "U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings today honored President Lyndon Baines Johnson in a ceremony officially renaming the U.S. Department of Education Building ... as the Lyndon Baines Johnson Department of Education Building."

The domestic achievement for which George W. Bush will be most remembered, the 2001 No Child Left Behind law, was the seventh reauthorization of LBJ's 1965 Elementary and Secondary Education Act, which brought the federal government heavily into primary and secondary education. NCLB requires states to define "proficiency" in reading and math, and achieve 100 percent proficiency by 2014.

Frederick M. Hess, director of education policies studies at the American Enterprise Institute, notes that unless the "proficiency" standards are risible, the goal is delusional.

It is ironic, Hess writes, that 50 states establishing divergent standards -- the decentralized approach Republicans demanded -- have sparked demands for centralization, in the form of national standards, a decade after congressional Republicans opposed President Bill Clinton's plan for voluntary national standards.

Furthermore, Hess notes, there has been striking dissonance between Republican resistance to race-conscious government policies, and NCLB "requiring states to identify every student by race and then report test scores -- and impose sanctions -- on that basis." The Johnsonian attributes of NCLB, which Hess says include "Great Society-style ambition and race-conscious rhetoric," suggest that the Egg Czar, who also was the first National School Superintendent, would feel right at home in a Washington where he could be Automotive Engineer in Chief.

'Green,' Eggs & Franks
Boy, George! So if I connect the dots from FDR to LBJ via egg-salad, I wind up at Barney Frank & green cars thanks to another Texan president who pushed NCLB but is a Republican? And this demonstrates... what? That history recycles? That Americans are dumb as dirt? That FDR trumps Reagan?

I'm exhausted.

The Coming Democrat Depression?
Barney Frank is one of the fathers of the current financial crisis. His DNA is all over the foolish program to grant loans to people who had no chance of repaying the loans. I hope Obama puts a rope on Barney and the other Democrat clowns (Reid, Pelosi, Dodd, Schumer, etc.). If Obama goes along with their failed ideas, we are in big trouble. The economy could slip into that Depression the Democrats keep talking about.

Confidence?
"Today, there is more Johnsonian confidence in government's competence than at any time since Johnson's policies shattered such confidence."

Less confidence than gen'l dissatisfaction and desperation, I think. Our problems are moral as anyone who wants to can plainly see.

Recycling the Republican Party
What it proves pb is that we need to come back to our roots.

While it will get worse ... it will only expose who the enemies are within our own camp.

I can't believe that I fought for Bush both times.

School Choice

As States begin to buckle under wasteful, profligate growth above inflation and population growth, it makes sense to look at income qualified education where the money follows the child.

This creates a competative environment and allows urban areas to switch to income qualified metro access buses for after school events and handicap transport.

True competition allows for schools to seek different levels of competencies based on the population they serve. Hence kids in auto mechanics class are taking a test on auto mechanics, basic financial math, hisotry and civic rights and responsabilities and the advanced school can take the IB (International Baccelaurete (sp)) hence NO NEED for the Dept of Education.

Free market and competition and a National Ranking (free market) would allow people to judge the health of their State and the likely economic outcome for such performance.

All Right, Already.
Let's see. so far, pb got one thing right, "...Americans are dumber than dirt" --when it comes to voting.

Scott thinks we should "...go back to our roots," whatever that means. Has he looked at the kids of the last two, three generations, their parents? What roots?

And Andrew thinks it's the "morals," not the enconomy, stupid, like of days of yore.

Personally, I like the way Israel does things, at least this most recent thing.

What bothers me
more than anything else is, as conservatives, our inability to organize.

Blacks can have a million man march, homosexuals(very few in numbers) can raise all kinds of hell,an antismoking group(about 100)can dictate how we are going to run businesses, etc.

There has to be an answer......somewhere.

Conservatives without guts
Why is it that only in private endeavors failure is considered an important tool toward eventual success? For every successful business there are failed ventures which teach us how to succeed.

But when it comes to government, conservatives like George Will demand perfection every time or it's throw the baby out with the bath water. They are disingenous: they point to ineffective government, or overreaching, and say it's all a bunch of hooey. What they really want is almost no government, even programs found to be successful and popular.

But that's no way to achieve electoral success. After all, minimal goverment fails nearly every time. It's a non-starter.

People want solutions, and where private and charitable initiatives fail they want public solutions. So, keep trying, democratically elected officials, and never mind the whining conservatives who basically distrust the voters but don't have the guts to admit it.

Problems and Answers
Everyone has problems that they cnnnot solve, that is essential to humanity. Seeking answers to our problems is the mother of innovation. Looking outside of ourselves for solutions causes others to accept the challenge and they are called politicians. Unfortunately, politicians are no smarter than the seekers and suffer from the same faults and weaknesses. They have one serious advantage, politicians can create the laws that control the seekers lives and the seekers have voluntarily provided them with that power. The fruits of our labor have now been taken to the tune of five twelfths of our individual lives to be redistrbuted after the takers take their increasing share of our labor for their own benefit and the benefits of their self-created Ponzi schemes legislated as rights and distributed as government benefits. Wake up America - you have been raped.

Johnson was a limited government...
...champion compared to the current crop of leaders in Washington. The country is simply too big for the "one size fits all" policies provided by central planning.

Doesn't anybody remember the Soviet Union?

To Royiunoslo
You speak, sort of, of keeping those government program which do work.

Which programs would thost be?
Social Security? Madicare?

Ican't think of one government program that is actually permitted in the Constitution that isn't full of waste and fraud. Now THAT"S politics.

A lack of government involvement is why private schooled and homeschooled children do better (on all levels) over the government indoctrination center educated children.

A wee bit o' government goes a looooong way.
Too many (535 to be exact) cookks spoil the broth. People should be allowed to find their own solutions' scrap the government interference in our lives.

Barney the Czar...
It's just down right sad when an incompetent politician like Barney Frank, who never seems to admit that he makes mistakes, is acting like a czar in Congress. He, as much as anyone, would drive people to support terms limits. He is a mess and has made a mess of what he oversees...gosh Barney, go into retirement so we can get things done...he even sticks his stupid opinions into Obama's thinking!! Obama doesn't care what you tnink about his appointments, nor, I'll bet, do most others in America. Why not get married while you have a chance and stay home.

Scrap Iron...
... has the honesty to admit he doesn't like representative government, and perhaps believes in some sort of libertarian ideal where even popular government programs that are considered successful by most have no place. This idea's been around a long time but rarely has any serious buyers. That dog don't hunt.

Simple Answer to me...
Today, there is more Johnsonian confidence in government's competence than at any time since Johnson's policies shattered such confidence.

IT IS BECAUSE THE MAJORITY OF PEOPLE TODAY ARE IDIOTIC PRODUCTS OF OUR PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM WHO PLAN TO HAVE A LIFE OF BEING A PARASITE.

Good article.
Hard to argue with Wills on the shared responsibility.."duplicity" would be a more apt word..of both parties in estabishing the nanny state, and generally imposing such values on people both here at home and abroad.

Many Leftwingers view "green cars" as what is in the best interests of the United States. It is not crass political posturing.

Many who like to view themselves as Rightwingers think the Iraq war was in the best interests of the United States. Again, such sentiments are not crass political posturing.

What do these have in common?

A presumption that government knows best.

Our government "knows best" on domestic matters by INTERVENING, using its power to bring about what it deems to be proper decision-making on the part of Americans, weaning them away from their traditional fondness for suvs, pickups and high horsepower vehicles.

Our government "knows best" on foreign affairs by INTERVENING, using its power to bring about what it deems to be a proper political system on Iraqis, weaning them away from their traditional allegiance to tribes and religious sects.

Neocons and Leftists are cut from the same cloth.

NCLB had a noble purpose, which was to introduce some notion of accountability into the educational process.

But in order to continue to receive federal funding, local school districts simply "dumbed down" their curriculum, and their tests.

(Repeated failure to graduate high percentages of students resulted in a loss of federal funding for the school districts).

Additionally, Bush admin. is seen as so incompetent in its exercise of governmental power that a good number of Americans are now yearning for a competent government.

That too is a factor.

Say Goodbye To Freedom
There is a very simple and linear progression here. Government sees itself as all knowing and omnipotent. As far as government is concerned the citizens exist to serve. We see in the act of taking control of the auto industry another step. They will now dictate what type of auto is built. It is irrelevant whether the people wish to buy the autos built. Tax dollars will be used to subsidize construction.

Should the public still resist purchasing the government backed auto congress will simply make all other autos illegal. There will be no choice but that given by government. Just another stage in the progression.

How does it feel to be owned?

Who's got the stats?
From a casual observation it seems to me that the most liberal states, i.e. CA and NY, are amongst the first to have severe budget crisis during an economic down turn. I don't have the stats, so can't say for a fact that it is reality.

Consumers are voters for the most part, but government doesn’t trust the consumer to buy what is in the best interest of the USA, so, how on good logic can the consumer (voter) ever be trusted to elect the correct politicians to be in the best interest of the USA?

It is human nature to discriminate and segregate, but look at how the government is meddling in those very natural traits. Birds of a feather flock together. Didn’t evolution segregate the races? That’s just another casual observation.

Royinoslo
You are so completely historically ignorant it absolutely defies the imagination.

Where's you get your degree? University of Moscow?

Ignorance and disobedience rules America
Yes, the Founding Fathers shake in their graves. While America has shortly after their demise, decided to forget them, and once again begining to dabbling into Imperialism, otherwise the most uncivil, civil war would never ever have been fought on American soil, by American brothers, fathers, cousins killing each others like flies and producing concentration camps, as sort of, for Mr. Hitler to imitate, some 2 centuries later.

From then on, militarism settled in as per magic and considered necessary, and of course soon beginning to use such power, like in the Phillipines Islands, etc., etc., etc. Spanish America war and again etc., etc., etc., where today America inhumane and horrendous war machinery circles the globe and shooting and threatening to shoot to pieces any nation that does not soon say: Heil, Emperor and King of the great America Empire.

Yes, and no sooner impossing Public Education, which in system and principle is nothing but Socialism/Communism, on Americans to keep them more and more in ignorance, etc., etc., etc., where now God only knows how many other Socialistic/Commnistic programs has run the economy to beyond the ground level, from which, recovery becomes more and more a mirage, as funding and funding by the very Federal Government only makes things worse.

George Washington: "Overgrown military establishments are under any form of government inauspicious to liberty and are to be regarded as particularly hostile to Republican liberty".

"Remember democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts and murders itself, There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide. John Adams (letter to John Taylor,
15 April, 1814)

Arrogance vs. Reality
The arrogance of LBJ's Great Society was that the "best and the brightest" actually thought govt could solve all those problems. I can still remember one oaf in the bureaucracy stating that the War on Poverty would eradicate all poverty in the US by 1970. This is nothing less than utopianism...a holdover from the Left's infatuation with marxism.

And today we see more of the same. However, I get this nagging feeling that many of the Dems don't really believe their own rhetoric. Which means, perhaps, that their rhetoric is really about retaining political power...not actually fixing problems.

Welcome back George

More on ignorance and disobedience
Thomas Jefferson: The principle of spending money to be paid by posterity, in the name of funding, is but swindling futurity on a large scale". Yes, while America for decades started to live beyond it means in need to fund more more more socialistic/communistic programs, that this swindling was fully in action, per Thomas Jefferson, right?

Now, our very Emperor and King that of George W., claims the solution to be; it was necessary for him to sacrifice free market economy. Yes, ignorance on the top. Swindle heretofore melted the economy, now to cure such swindle even swindle at a much greaters scale, right?

George Washington: "No pecuniary consideration is more urgent than the regular redemption and discharge of the public debt: on none can delay be more injurious and an economy of time more valuable".

Most American most likely will say: What in the hell is that? Nothing moves from Government down to the very last individual, without credit to be paid later, right? Savings, what in the hell is that also? Such antiquated things this ingnorants of some 2 centuries ago believed in?

Yes, consumption is now promoted from top to buttom, right? Any economy that is driven by consumption, in time, is as good as termites are for a wooden structure. Can there be a better proof of such, while the evidence is fully there for all American to see?

Georg
Egg Czar ?

Will, you wizened old man.

What the he// is wrong with smoking a Czigar ?

I admit I never had one with an egg. It never occurred to me.

How do you use the egg? Do you poke a tiny hole in the end, stir it with chopsticks and suck out the innards between puffs?

I enjoy a good Claro, once or twice a year, but that egg, scares the heck out me.
Do you get high on that?

Not that it takes that much.

Okay, you dirt dumb sheeple
52% may have voted "right" in November, BUT you've been voting WRONG for many years in which cars/trucks you will buy.

Since you haven't made the "right" choices, i.e. hybrids or electrics or tuna cans on wheels - the gubmint will force you to buy the ones Barney Fwank thinks you should drive by forcing the auto companies to phase out those vehicles which have been MOST profitable (light trucks and SUV's) and engineer, start up and produce that which we don't want, all at a tremendous loss which we, the taxpayers will underwrite.

I wish I still had my little 1981 Isuzu 4X4 diesel pickup. It was gutless as a VW minibus at high altitude, put out more smoke than a locomotive, was extremely hard starting in winter and couldn't haul much of a load, BUT it got 42-46 mpg (really) and would go anywhere.

I remember one 36" snowfall where I chained up the front tires and went all over town, even over the river and through the woods to my friend's house on a hill, with snow flowing over the hood and parting at the windshield, radio blasting and heater blowing. Best snow machine I ever owned, but I digress.

Effervescent?
Has that replaced "gay" as the PC term? Risible is a good word, as well.

The NCLB law is harmful to students, but really good for bureaucrats and teacher's unions. If the unions can get kids to pass tests with 35% or 40% correct, they crown the teachers as "highly qualified". Sadly, the last imperial President has opened the way for the first communist President. Hail King Obama, the first Orwellian President.

Scott
Don't feel bad about working for George Bush twice. Remember that your choice first time was Bush or Dumb-as-a-Box-o'-Rocks Kyoto Gore, second time was Bush or Dumb-as-a-Box-o'-Rocks War-Protestor Kerry.

Anytime you start thinking "it couldn't be worse," think about 4 to 8 years with either of those two. AND with a gutless Republican-controlled, then Democrat-controlled Congress.

We forget when FDR took office
there was no debt or deficit.

Now we have a $3 trillion budget, but owe $39 trillion to Soc. Sec., $9 trillion in debt. $1/2 trillion in deficit, and it could be a $trillion under Big Bro O, also, bankrupt Medicare, and negative GNP.

The Dems. plan to *solve* these problems by printing and spending more money, which will give us inflation. Today's inflation/interest is still near 0, and you cannot imagine how wonderful that is until it's 18 or 25%, as it was under Carter.

The Pentagon has been instructed to develop methods for controlling civil unrest (opposing the posse comitas law that the armed services cannot function domestically), and that's how far the Dems. think they can go: to civil war.

Somehow, they have forgotten the USSR had 70 years of complete gov't control of auto industries, etc., and it all collapsed in 1989.

The market will not be denied. As long as gov't interferes, bailouts, whatever, the ec. and all its citizens will suffer.

Demand
There is no demand for "green" cars in today's market...and there will be none when the Volt emerges from GM with a price tag of $38000, and the liklihood of replacing batteries at 70,000 miles at $7000....resale value will be zilch...but Frank wants to mandate building them, then subsidizing them by bribing consumers to buy them with government incentives, all in the name of protecting union jobs and protecting the rest of us from a problem, global warming, a problem whose existence is now becoming dubious at best...

Quick, name a GM manufactured small car that could be called a success...by success, I mean retail success actully sold to retail costomers rather than rental companies...

My cold dead hands
The will have to pry my Chrysler 300 from my cold dead hands!

Royinoslo
I'm going to have to re-read Will's column, as I don't recall his advocating eliminating programs that work (though I can't really think of many that DO work).

Actually, one that HAS worked is the various forms of tax-deferred retirement programs (401k and the like), instituted because the pols knew the voters could barely live on Social Security, even now, and that they should be encouraged to save for their own retirement. Now I hear that the Democrats are re-thinking that one--it "costs" them too much in current taxes. Perhaps they could raid all of our retirement savings, just this once, they say.

Keep in mind that any program that Congress enacts will survive forever; the only reason it's not working MUST be because it hasn't been funded enough, so throw more $$ at it. A program may be enlarged or supplemented but NEVER ended. How many failed "jobs programs" are there now? What new ways can Congress find to give workers' dollars to non-workers (food stamps, free housing, cash payments, etc.)? And now they'd like to force consumers to purchase "green" cars (while refusing to let oil companies access AMERICA's vast oil resources). Global warming, you know.

You're probably right, though. Barney Frank knows best.

That is very true. Besides at the time who would have thunk peso george was not a real Republican?
The worse of him being a RINO is he left our borders open to anyone who wanted to come through. That and the fact of our two border guards being unjustly imprisoned proves he is no law and order person as we first thought.
I guess he thinks cheap labor is more important than the safety of this great nation. Who would have thunk it?

Royinoslo, H.D.
Roy, generally agree with you that some government is essential.

To argue otherwise is to refute human nature as well as conservatism.

For man inherently is flawed, cannot control his appetites, and is disposed to evil.

Conservatives understand that aspect of man's nature.

Even the Guru of Minimalist Govt, Alan Greenspan, had to concede recently: "Those of us who have looked to the self interest of lending institutions to protect shareholders' equity, myself included, are in a state of shocked disbelief".

No Sh*t.

But government invariably becomes oppressive, which is why our Founders in the U.S. circumscribed its powers.

Circumscribed them, not eliminated or denied them.

H.D., liked your quotes by Washington and Adams.

Two quotes applicable to Bush 43's disastrous notion to democratize the mideast:

"America goes not abroad in search of monsters to destroy. She is the wellwisher of freedom and independence for all. She is the champion and vindicator only of her own". John Quincy Adams.

"The effect of liberty on individuals is they may do what they please. We ought to see what it will please them to do, before we risk congratulations". Edmund Burke.

John

Barney Frank comes from a state in which no liberal Democrat can do wrong in the eyes of its voters. Massachusetts has to have, collectively, the most moronic and amoral voters in the nation. The government at all levels is made up of 85% Democrats who know and understand the apathy and stupidity of Massachusetts citizens.

Ted Kennedy committed vehicular homicide in 1967 and his punishment was to be voted into his senatorial office for over forty years.

Barney Frank allowed a gay prostitution ring to be run out of his house in Washington and, in spite of his demonstrable stupidity, incompetence and arrogance, gets re-elected for thirty years.

Gerry Studs, who had gay sex with a 17-year-old Congressional page was rewarded with re-election for another 20 years.

Tommy "taxes" Finneran - Speaker Of The Massachusetts House - was convicted of several Federal felonies and was rewarded with a talk radio show here in Boston.

As I write this, a Massachusetts rep, a Boston City Councilman, the Mass Senate president and dozens of other politicians - Democrats all - are either under indictment or under investigation for fraud, bribery and other charges. Their constituents, in spite of wiretaps, video and photographs of these scumbags being caught in the act, are backing them to the hilt. They're Democrats, and to Massachusetts voters, Democrats can do no wrong.

Republicans, on the other hand are immediately drummed out of office. Peter Blute, for example was caught on photographs on a boat in which a drunken party which featured semi-nude women. He was forced out of office by the liberal press and the Massachusetts media. Ted Kennedy and Chris Dodd make a waitress sandwich in a sleasy public display of lechery and it's quickly swept under the rug and it's business as usual.

Trulib
You have it right - asking "how does it feel to be owned?"

From Town Councils,County Seats,State Govs. & Federal- all the RESTRICTIONS & LAWS added to "their" books means WE are closer to being OWNED by Government.

People, we all need to realize that & let them know we've had enough.

Political Bozos!
"Barney Frank, the effervescent Massachusetts Democrat". Hello?!? He's an obnoxious babbling homo and main culprit in the mortgage mess that is at the center of the overall line of dominos we call "the economic crisis". In general, politicians manipulate voters/citizens. If the manipulation is actually “the best for the most” and not shot through with self-interested schemes or contrary to the intent of the Constitution then a cautious “yes” is in order. But 98% of the time politicians are dumb as dirt on the issues they meddle with and if they rely on “experts”, they select the ones that support their agenda and almost never the clear and superior end-to-end solution that is “the best for the most”.

Happy 09
bob C, has said it all. You can move the MA mentality to Washington, and the picture is exactly the same. Americans voted for the new deal, and they will get exactly what they voted for.

Political Bozos II
Regarding the green issue: What's really unethical here is that Gore, Pelosi, and many other politicos are investing in green technologies on the ground floor while at the same time they promote them (with scare tactics and otherwise) they craft legislation (or otherwise influence legislation) to mandate green technologies in order to boost their investments. These technologies, like ethanol production from corn (VERY inefficient), have been shown to be NOT in the best interest of the majority of the American people or the planet. Global warming as Gore is pushing is far, far from a sure thing. So this is, again, a pack of lies or orchestrated deceit in order to capitalize on investments they’ve made and other nefarious reasons. How low is that?!? I’m not against “going green” and don’t discount global warming completely but since these proposed remedies have such an impact on the economy and people’s lives any measure taken has to be on very firm ground and with a maximum return on investments…not just monetarily but also quality of life for ALL.

ld35
Conservatives as a rule don't protest don't riot, etc. Unfortunately that is a part of the conservative mindset. We think about things and don't get angry like libs do. We talk and write about them, only raising up when pushed against a wall. Its too bad for us and squashes us in the end.
Libs on the other hand go off at almost anything proven or not. Their mindset is to speak up, get in your face, or protest at a moments notice and for any reason valid or not. They don't have to think things through but go from the heart and what feels right.

We have the same thing in Michigan with the re-election of chief bozo Carl Levin, who lobbied into infinity to NOT increase fuel milage, but parked his large arse in the Chevy volt, with his an his Brother's large ego's, I don't know how they all fit! Michigan keeps re-electing this bozo, but it is the Union's and the college towns that keep putting his arse back in.
All politicians "say" what we want to hear just before we stick their hineys back in, you know like the "secure fence act of 2006" and as soon as their sorry butts were re-elected tried every which way but up to defund it. BUT tried every which way to get the illegal aliens some sort of piecemeal amnesty! They will try it again as soon as Obama is sworn in, telling the 10 millions un-employed LEGAL citizens to just get over themselves

Subject: Political Bozos II
I also agree on this one, I'm undecided on whether it is global warming, or climate change, which we have gone through for eons.
BUT the one thing that totally grinds me is Al Snore's selling of carbon credits. WHAT GOOD do they do, Company A buys the unused credits of Company B, WHERE IS THE DOWNTURN IN POLLUTION? There isn't any, just that the company that didn't pollute to begin with sells them to a company that can keep on spewing! Makes sense to me. NOT!!!

I also think that Johnson's "great society" only gave us generations of people spewing out babies and never do a lick of work, but collect welfare off the working is ridiculous, this will go into infinity IF they are not made to EARN a living on their own! Also the Fathers must be identified and made to support their offspring! That would put a STOP to baby factories for profit.

Also wasn't Teddy Kennedy responsible for NO child left behind???
The very same Teddy Kennedy who got his Senate seat because his Brother was elected President, and he was too young, so someone "held" it till he turned 30 and could run on his own?? THAT Teddy Kennedy who will be made a saint when he passes.

Exit strategies
What are our exit strategies from the quagmires of the wars on poverty and drugs? When will we abandon the deficient government monopoly on education and indoctrination by instituting vouchers and allowing for individual quality control in the marketplace? When will we stop forcing everyone to participate in the government approved Social Security Ponzi Scheme?

Or, are these government programs so successful that we need to stay the course?

What's wrong with voters
is they live in cities.

Obama won Ohio by 20 out of 88 counties. But he won the counties with Akron, Columbus, Dayton, yadda yadda.

MA may be an anomaly where almost every county goes lib. as MA has the highest number of colleges/universities for any state.

Dems. win in the NE and W. Coast by winning NYC, Albany, Phila., Pittshurg and Harrisburg, etc. and the rest of the nation pays for this travesty.

McCsin lost but he won 56,000,000,000 votes, 47% of the electorate and the majority of states.

McCain lost but he won 56,000,000 votes
and 22 states, which ought to be enough people and states to effect some kind of political power and real opposition.

Big Bro O won 20 out of 88 counties in Ohio, but he only won all of the counties with Akron, Columbus, Dayton, etc. 68 counties voted against him and the lib. jihad.

The 60s brought a huge influx of leg. for welfare, food stamps, Medicaid and Medicare, housing subsidies and the wonderful projects, *low-income housing* with Fannie Mae in tow, and the huge boondoggle of grants and subsidies that drives the left through gov't money payinbg for Planned Parenthood, the Sierra Club, Citizens for This and That, none of which are supposed to lobby for more but which is exactly what they do, year by year, decade after decade. These self-perpetuating NGO's are driving Am. and world agendas.

But if we can do nothing else but write, then you guys should write DC every time you post here. Emails and faxes stopped *comprehensive immigration reform^ in 2007, and 56,000,000 hounding our *reps* daily should get some of their attention.

If you don't get into the fray, the Dems. will not only take your income by taxes, they will fee, surcharge, and levy you and your car to deaath with energy taxes, keep you from taking vacations, buying the home you want, and practicing your liberty as the Constitution provides.

The pundits are busy praising O for his *moderate* choices and decisions so far, but so far he is not actually president, and his life of radical choices and extremist mentors and buddies bodes ill for us all. Don't moan and groan, get on the phone, before O takes it away from you.

Exactly Renny!
The one thing that those in Congress detest the most is the "little people" telling them what they don't like. They scurry for cover like a bunch of rats, don't believe me, check at http://www.numbersusa.com, and check out their voting records, then call their staff, WHAT A JOKE. Carl Levin with a D or worse's staff tell you he is anti-amnesty! ha, ha, ha. HE votes for every type of bring in the illerate and poor, because they know they will vote the Democratic way every time. BUT what they use to pay these poor and illerate when they have no one employed to keep filling up the coffers???

NOT only that but we bring in 140,000 EACH AND EVERY month, never mind that we have over 10 MILLION LEGAL citizens un-employed and about that many illegal aliens un-employed. They didn't extend the E-Verify law either, they were waiting for Obama to be elected, and then they will trash it, saying that it isn't affective, no, it isn't if you want the illegals employed, it will SHOW that their SS# is either invalid or Stolen, or 200 others are using the same number, or the illegal uses their anchor child's SS#, but when E-verify shows that the SS# belongs to a CHILD, they are not hired! SO WHICH Congresscritter is LOOKING out for US LEGAL CITIZENS????

THE Czar Is Coming
Well, reading TH, and all my fellow responders, there are 5 or 6 generals in our military deciding which one will lead his division into D. C. and arrest Congress, close the Supreme Court, and merely request those in the White House to go home, if they know what is good for them.

Yes, this sort of thing happens every time, to democracies. Then, we can get back to empire building. Good.

Excuse me, Mr. Will
We don't need liberals or politicians telling us is best FOR us. We live our lives and within a budget, and a POX on all HOUSES that do not.

Down with Tsars and anyone, who spends out money and places enourmous debt on future generations.

Throughout the history of this country, even while it was a colony of England, there has been a way for taxpayers to stand and say, "No more." We must learn the lessons of history and say, "No more."

Taxpayers must unite and strike. Hide your wealth since the "spread the wealth" policies of the tax and spenders in Washington apply to taxable income and any confiscation of accumulated wealth will violate the Takings Clause of the Constitution. If you can afford to lower your income, even by $1, do so and, thereby, help lower all tax revenues. Go to jail, if you have to, but: Strike! Fight! Protest! Speak Out! Argue! Never, ever Submit! And, protect your family and your heirs from the disgusting antics of the Federal Government.

We know what they think of us, in fact, "Dingy Harry" Reid has already stated that those, who pay his salary, pay for the pork he brings back to his State, and pay for the government, are just "Smelly Tourists" that are, somehow, BENEATH their elected officials.

Enough! Keep your guns. Keep your voice. Keep your pride and never, never give up! We must take our country back and tell the Feds. to go to Hell! Any all Citizens that thinks they are entitled to the spoils of others' labor can join them.

John, Fine! You Pay For It!
"Americans voted for the new deal, and they will get exactly what they voted for."

This American WILL NOT, under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, pay for a Same-Old-Failed, New Deal! You want it? Then, find a way to pay for it, because I will go to jail before I spend one penny of MY money that is safely hidden-away for my own children on O's New Deal.

Americans may have voted for a New Deal, but most of them don't pay the taxes in the first place. It is people like me, who will be asked to foot someone else's bill AND, I, PERSONALLY, WILL NOT.

So, good luck in finding the Utopia of a New, New Deal.

Please, Suffer All Fools.
"The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not." Thomas Jefferson

"When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro." Hunter S. Thompson

According to this Smelly Tourist, to start a list of "Pros", one need look no further than Queen Nancy, Dingy Harry, Barney "I love Gays, Gays love me" Fwanks, Chucky Schumer, ConMan Dodd, Puff the Magic Obama, and the rest of the fools in Washington. And, Reblicrats like Johnny McCain, who needs to stay the next time he crosses the aisle to join the Libtards.

Screw them all! I am keeping my money.

Dear Denise and John
I don't remember anyone asking us to pay for the New Deal. The money will come out of your paycheck before you ever see it just like the money the government spends now. Notice to American slave labor, it is not your money. The money belongs to the Federal government. Just ask Obama, "Spread the wealth." Or maybe you prefer the Vice President, "IT IS PATRIOTIC TO PAY MORE TAXES." O's New Deal became your New Deal when more voters in this country wanted handouts instead of jobs. Lordy, Lordy I want never have to make another house payment or car payment again.

When going thru Hell, keep on going.
Generations do not last as long as government programs, so we don't rise up with indignation since we were not there when it started. So we grow like Russia did. The government has a finger in every cup of coffee and the bureauocracy become the ruling class. Best pay. best benefits, and no initative to change except for more of the same.

RonC - Not Me.
"The money will come out of your paycheck before you ever see it just like the money the government spends now."

Since I am self-employed, no taxes are taken out of my paycheck. I pay quarterly taxes and file one single tax return for taxes due on whatever is left over after all deductions are made on my personal net profits. And, I have A LOT of deductions. So, my income becomes that which I determine it to be.

Of course, the "Spread the Wealth" philosophy is based on income, not acumulated wealth. So, if I choose to quit work, I can stop feeding the Beast... And, no beast is a good beast until it is starved and dead.

It's Going to Get Worse
It's incredible that the same legislators who have run up the largest deficit and debt in the history of mankind doing things that they mostly are not supposed to be doing while bringing a $14 trillion economy to its knees have the nerve to tell the auto industry that they don't know what they're doing.

The amazing thing is that no matter how badly they screw things up, people keep asking the government to do more. Obama says don't worry about the deficit. His programs are going to cost money and since you no longer have it to take to give to some one else, you are going to have to be forced to borrow it. The Fed will create it and loan it to us with interest.

How do we get rid of all the government
BEAUROCRATS?
THey are breeding like rats! They are eating all of our tax dollars! We have no control over them with our votes. Once in the government we can't rid ourselves of them.

Patriotism
Russian authoritarianism is the highest form of Patriotism.

Consumers are disappointed in Congress!!
Barney Frank is an idiot. He probably thinks his coddling and ties to Freddie Mac are not a conflict of interest and unethical. WE are extremely disappointed in him and Dodd and the rest of the Democrats in Congress. They are unwilling to do their job as the Constitution meant and are far to overbearing and controlling.

A Government Approved Education????
The new Secretary of Education is an Obama associate from Chicago who received advice from that famous education professor, William "Bill" Ayers. Establishing a centralized standard for secondary education using the advice of such academics is a very scary proposition.

The media cries over and over again about the failure of public education. No one ever mentions that other countries that America is compared with such as Japan have a system that identifies vocational education students early. Craftsmen and techicians are segregated and educated, thus leaving the math and science students to rise with average test scores that eclipse American results. Here, NO Child Left Behind proposes that one size fits all and that everyone deserves a college education. The concept then dummies down the product and we shackle our education system with more meddling.

Does it seem a bit suspect that a Congress that has recently had a 9-11% approval rating can be expert in so many areas? I think it, once again, is plain scary. Deliver us from the Obama "Chicago Way" when it comes to education. It is a recipe for disaster. We can place it right beside the the sub-prime mortgage disaster presided over by Barney Frank and Chris Dodd, experts in banking, automobiles and now education. Scary.

Starve the Beast and it will die.

Taxpayers must strike. Tell the Dingy Harrys of the world that the Stinky Tourists are NOT go to take it anymore. Why should we have ANY respect for those in Government that look down on us, but want our money?

They can go to Hell and take their smelly bureaucrats with them.

DENISE - I AGREE WITH YOUR POST AT 6:10
I can hear you saying the same things I have been saying for years. Every time I wrote a check to the IRS and heard on the news of the latest stupid pork barrel benefit that our government had voted for, I wanted to scream.

Now I am retired and have learned a better way to avoid taxes. None of my hard earned money will go to big business bail outs which was run by incompetant CEO's that received millions of dollars nor to pay for the raises that the congress just gave themselves for their inefficiency in the way they spend our money.

This country is based on a government for the people and by the people and we need to take it back. Our voices need to become louder so Washington can hear it and will listen. We did not ever elect anyone to become a Czar, a King, an Emperor, or a Casear and it is time they all stop acting like they are one of the above. The next tax revolt will not be limited to throwing tea in the harbor. SO SAY THE PEOPLE !

According to Barney Frank
Barney Frank seems to be the only one who has included the consumer in the bailout. Frank says the bailout is the fault of the consumer, not the automaker. Little did the consumer know what a disappointment they were to Congress. You can rest assure Barney Frank, everything the consumer does, they take Congress into consideration on how they spend their money. With the attitude Frank has, no company that goes under is at fault. It's the consumers fault. No one is going to believe the party that controls both Houses isn't going to force the automakers to make cars the public doesn't want. Then again, don't blame the political party who does this because according to Barney Frank it's the consumers fault.

Reba, Keep Up The Good Work!

Reba, you go girl! There are a lot of us taxpayers, who have had enough. We have been silent too long. We MUST SCREAM, STRIKE, PROTEST, EVERYTHING, if that is what it takes.

All of the snot-nosed kids that voted for Obama's free lunches-for-all philosophy are the very ones, who will be paying the bill when it comes due in future years. And, you and I will not be available to bail them out.

At that point, their joke will be on them, the dumb, ignorant fools.

FDR
Nana sang the praises of FDR to me--in the sixties. I couldn't stand Nixon's "tone" and voted for McGovern in '72, my first vote. Since then: Carter; Reagan; Reagan; Bush; Perot; Perot; Nader; W; Paul.

Today, I'm a huge fan of Obama and have high hopes for him. He's my czar.

Denise
You should seek help. You're a bit hysterical. I wonder, were you this outraged at George Bush and the Republicans who ran up our debt from three trillion to now eleven trillion dollars? Or is it only when a Democrat gets elected?

Herbert H. Bush
The current economic situation has an eerie resemblance to the Hoover-Roosevelt transition. We now recognize that Hoover was an interventionist president inclined to 'engineer' economic activity by various government policies and programs and differing from his successor only in the extent of these interventions, and then by a political stance of FDR to demonize Hoover and 'big business' in general. It was, in any case, difficult to criticize FDR for politices and programs already begun and celebrated by Hoover, as it is now diffiuclot to come to grips with the forthcoming Obama administration on the basis of what Bush has already done. It looks to me like a replay of the 1932-33 situation.

Correction
to the poster who wrote, "Hail King Obama, the first Orwellian President. " That hould be, "Hail King Obama, the first Affirmative Action President."

My husband has been a car dealer for twenty five years, and will tell you the American people do not want hybrid or electric cars if they did they would buy them !
