Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WASHINGTON -- Nevada's caucuses turned a simmering subtext of the Democratic presidential nomination contest into a dominant narrative. South Carolina winnowed out a Republican candidate, whether Mike Huckabee knows it or not, and the candidate who counted on being winnowed in there, Fred Thompson, wasn't.

Speaking in the sunshine after her Nevada victory, Hillary Clinton said there were many people to thank but mentioned only one: Antonio Villaraigosa, Los Angeles' Hispanic mayor. Her 64 percent of Nevada's Hispanic vote produced her victory. Although the culinary workers union had endorsed Barack Obama, many of its workers are Hispanic and went their own way.

The 22 Democratic primaries and caucuses of Feb. 5 occur in many states with huge Hispanic populations (e.g., California, New York, New Jersey, Obama's Illinois), so for Obama's campaign, the suddenly pressing question is: Will America's largest minority, Hispanics, support a candidate from the second-largest minority, African-Americans?

Also, Obama seems flummoxed by the Clintons' Clintonness. When he committed the gaffe (defined as the utterance of a truth in conditions inhospitable to that fugitive virtue) of saying that for many years the Republicans were "the party of ideas," he was merely repeating something said decades ago by an exemplary Democrat, the senator whose seat Clinton fills -- well, occupies: Pat Moynihan.

Clinton promptly resorted to the sort of bilge that the adjective "Clintonian" was created to denote. She said she did not think privatizing Social Security was "a better idea." As a fellow so usefully said in Charles Dickens' "The Pickwick Papers," "That 'ere song's political; and, wot's much the same, that it ain't true." Obama had of course said nothing about conservative ideas being "better."

One of the Obama campaign's senior leaders, who must have dozed through the 1990s, has expressed astonishment at the Clintons' intellectual sociopathy, as when they audaciously charge that Obama is a tepid defender of abortion rights. Their evidence is that on an abortion-related vote in the Illinois Legislature, he voted "present." The Clintons certainly know, and just as certainly do not care, that Obama's vote was tactical, cast for procedural reasons at the behest of abortion-rights leaders in Illinois.

A populist to whom the people are indifferent is a melancholy spectacle, and John Edwards won just 4 percent in Nevada, where his courtship of unions was supposed to elevate him to the top of the class struggle's barricades. He has competed in three states (Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada) and lost them by increasing margins. Someone should tell him the joke that another populist, William Jennings Bryan, told on himself after losing three presidential elections (1896, 1900 and 1908) as the Democrats' nominee:

A man tried three times to enter a saloon and three times was tossed out. After the third time he dusted himself off and said, "I'm beginning to think those fellows don't want me in there."

Edwards, who probably will finish a distant third in South Carolina this Saturday, where he won in 2004, soon will run the risk of having the dreaded S-word affixed to him: Harold Stassen's persistence in seeking the presidency rendered him ridiculous. Edwards might consider supporting Obama, who Edwards has identified as a candidate of "change," against Clinton, who Edwards says is a candidate of "the status quo." Edwards' departure from the contest could, however, serve Clinton by freeing up some white male voters who might then support her.

Thompson has left the race and now can continue to support John McCain. In New Hampshire, Thompson attacked McCain's principal problem there, Mitt Romney. In South Carolina, Thompson's attack on Huckabee as a "liberal" might have provided McCain's margin of victory.

Huckabee is a niche candidate who has run out of niches. Perhaps more than any other two states, Iowa and South Carolina were suited to him because of their large numbers of evangelical Christians. But in each he finished fourth among nonevangelical participants in the Republican nominating process. Having no message that resonates broadly, and little money with which to broadcast it, he is in a political cul-de-sac.

So far, Romney has won the most Republican votes and delegates, but Rudy Giuliani could bolt to the front in both categories on Feb. 5. Most of those contests are open only to Republicans, and based on January's evidence, that is good for Romney and ominous for McCain. At the moment, however, it remains possible, perhaps even probable, that each party will offer its oldest and most familiar candidate, Clinton and McCain, to a nation clamoring for a rupture with the recent past.

If that happened, God willing, it'd give the country a good, hard look at the complete disaster the "nationalize it all" DC crowd have made of things--and maybe even shake the people out of their stupor long enough to realize you get the government you deserve.

Update
Will probably filed this column before he had heard the SC Democratic debate on Monday evening. I am happy to report that Obama has now learned the phrase "No more Mr Nice Guy" and threw a couple of punches at Hillary, on subjects mentioned in this article: 1) exactly what Obama said about Republican ideas, which HC had clearly distorted; 2) that the 100 "Present" votes out of Obama's 4000 votes which HC took issue with were, in fact, procedural and the way things are done in Illinois. But the best bit of the evening was the following:

Obama: "XXXXXX"
Clinton: I never said that.
Obama: Your husband did. Sometimes I wonder who I am running against.

[That brief exchange should have made it crystal clear to all listeners that HC has her own Swift Boat Squad in BC---BC attacks and then HC pleads innocent.]

Well George I gave
you a two this time. Even though you are wrong, I liked the way you were wrong.

I Just Don't Understand Why Almost Every
article I scanned this morning has "anointed" McCain as the "front runner". It just doesn't make sense to me. Actually it does, when I remind myself that a few dozen elitist liberal pundits and columnist’s think they can say it until it happens.

I certainly hope there is still enough backbone in the Republican Party (conservative backbone to be specific) to prove that these big mouth elitist’s can't continue to mold the Republican Party into THEIR image. I am holding on with faith praying that there is still enough conservatives in the party to beat off this takeover. MSM wants to make us theirs, and McCain is the first step into oblivion.

That fugitive virtue
I love this guy..."the gaffe (defined as the utterance of a truth in conditions inhospitable to that fugitive virtue)."...As a fellow so usefully said in Charles Dickens' "The Pickwick Papers," "That 'ere song's political; and, wot's much the same, that it ain't true." Truth never changes save for politics, where political nuiance doth suffice. At least we still have Gearge.

If as George comments, "perhaps each party will offer its oldest and most familiar candidate, Clinton and McCain, to a nation clamoring for a rupture with the recent past", red fish, blue fish's "complete disaster", could perhaps be more complete than we might be able to imagine.

Once again, those of us who hope for what is best for us will have to settle for what we deserve.

Romney On Stimulating The U.S. Economy
Romney Says He’s the Man to Fix Economy
NPR-Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney compared himself favorably to two of his Republican White House rivals on Monday yet made no mention of a third, underscoring his strategy for next week’s Florida primary.

In television interviews and personal appearances, Romney said that unlike himself, both Arizona Sen. John McCain and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani would “have a relatively difficult time” strengthening an economy that is in danger of falling into a recession.

“I’ve spent my life, 25 years … in the world of business,” he said. “I know why jobs come and go.”

there was a democratic debate last evening?

boutte:
your frustration and desparation is really obvious; maybe you "paulites" should initiated the conversation w/ the bloomberg camp about running on their ticket?

danbar:
couldn't agree more, but the GOP winner in FL will go to the one who gets the Cuban-American vote, and I think McCain has it via good ol' Sen Mel. At least maybe McCain's attack dawg, Fred, will be gone soon...why do I feel the Fred campaign was invented for NH and SC to assist Johnny Boy?

McCain vs. Hillary
Another good reason for "none of the above" to be put on the ballot. I might just write that in.

Charlie - You May Be Right, I Hope Not
I want to believe that there are enough of us left to save the GOP from becoming puppets of the MSM/Pundit liberal media. I have faith in God and the wisdom of men in gereral. May my faith be upheld.

Kudos to George.
What a pleasure to read George Will.

Superb writing, spinkled with amusing anecdotes.

On the substance of the article, rather than the delightful way it was presented, he is on solid ground.

I do think this internecine warfare between Obama and the Clintons could redound to the benefit of the GOP this fall, if Hillary garners the nomination over what many black supporters of Obama view to be dirty politics.

It may depress their vote.

Still, the legacy of G.W. Bush is a major handicap for the GOP this fall...one it is not likely to overcome in the absence of some traumatic event.

for Lilly
Lilly writes: "That brief exchange should have made it crystal clear to all listeners that HC has her own Swift Boat Squad in BC---BC attacks and then HC pleads innocent."

Of course.

I am a conservative, Obama is liberal, and most likely I will not vote for him.

BUT Obama does not deserve the kind of dirty pummeling he is getting from the Clintons. Obama has tried to run a clean campaign--he really has--and Bill and Hill just keep trying to drag it into the mud.

To Obama, I say this:
Don't allow yourself to be baited by Hill/Bill. If you retaliate in kind and get into gutter politics too, you'll lose because Bill and Hill are experts at that. Play to your own strengths.

GOP Opportunity
Will points out an interesting dynamic going on within the Democratic Party: The Hispanic - Black divide. It appears that increasingly Clinton will become the candidate Hispanics favor and Obama will become the candidate Blacks favor. There seems to be some natural animosity between these groups and rightly so.

If (and right now that is a big if) the Republicans can select a candidate that promises to get tough on illegal "immigration" and to never issue amnesty (I guess that only leaves Romney at this point) then I believe this represents a tremendous opportunity for Republicans to make inroads with the Black community. First and foremost "no amnesty" is the right and just policy for this country and should be done regardless of the political repurcussions, but it also represents a great campaign issue to attack the Democrats on their home turf (The Black Population).

Unquestionably, there is no demographic in our country that is harmed greater with the current illegal invasion and open borders policy than Black Americans. If played smartly, I believe that this issue could offer Republicans the opportunity to pick up votes in the Black community they otherwise would never have had any hope for attaining. Now, of course if Republicans make the huge mistake of nominating McCain or even Giuliani then this possibility instantly evaporates since both have almost the exact same open borders philosophy and non-solution to illegal "immigration" as Frau Hitlary.

SteveR -- Most Likely?
Your comments are very revealing...

"I am a conservative, Obama is liberal, and most likely I will not vote for him."

Most likely??? I'm sorry dude, but anyone who is even the slightest bit conservative would NEVER consider voting for Obama. Sure, he seems like a nice and decent guy (especially in contrast to the Clintons) but one look at his record reveals that he is about as far left as one gets. Add his extreme leftist tilt to his non-existent resume and I'm just having a hard time understanding how a conservative could ever even CONSIDER voting for this character.

My only guess is that you still suffer from extreme White guilt as you constantly seem to want to cast aspersions of racism on everyone. Either that or you aren't really all that conservative.

Future of the GOP
Danbar: "I want to believe that there are enough of us left to save the GOP from becoming puppets of the MSM/Pundit liberal media."

I have the same hope, but in the past week have come to the conclusion that conservatives like me are just a minority with the Republican Party now. It was shocking to read columns in which supposed main stream Republicans talked about "conservatives", which clearly indicates that the columnists don't consider themselves conservatives.

It is also shocking that there are so few columns against McCain, and the message from party insiders, with a few exceptions is that McCain is ok.

Clearly this means that the party has grown away from me, or at least that the leadership has.

The nomination of John McCain would be much, much more than a presidential race. It would be an attempt by the Rockefeller / Neo-con Republicans to purge the Reagan Conservatives from the Party. Much has been written lately about how the 21st Century Republican Party just needs to focus on the War on Arabs, and doesn't need conservatives of other types. John McCain would appoint Democrat Joe Lieberman as Vice President, then after election push through amnesty and appoint pro-choice judges. Sure, some conservatives would leave the Party, but the neo-cons plan on replacing them with moderate Democrats and illegal aliens & their supporters.

The only thing conservatives have is their votes (and money). If we vote for Johnny Mac because of fear of Hillary, we have no leverage. One wise old conservative said the other day to remember that the conservative movement and the Republican Party are two different things, and that we could survive a third Clinton Presidency.

Follow The Money
I can tell you why some Republican establishment members (like Bill Kristol, for example) are supporting McCain. Because they like the idea of cheap labor. They favored McCain-Kennedy when it was on the table. They are still in the pockets of business. They know the only difference between John McCain then and John McCain now on illegal immigration is a promise to put up a fence. They'll sing the song on McCain to the tune people want to hear on other issues but it's all about cheap labor and money.

No change
"They know the only difference between John McCain then and John McCain now on illegal immigration is a promise to put up a fence. "

Exactly. A friend of mine in South Carolina said McCain was asked if he changed his mind on amnesty, and said No, I just see the need for security FIRST.

So even Bush was attempting that. He put a bunch of National Guard troops on the border as a symbolic gesture to try to give cover for those who wanted to vote for amnesty.

The Republican establishment sees those illegals as millions of millions of votes. This is the old mistake, made over and over, of assuming that if we act like Democrats Light, that the Democratic voters will turn to us. It has failed again and again.

Preemptive war candidates
It appears to me, as an unbiased observer of the GOP race, that every GOP candidate is trying to one-up the other candidates on his willingness to launch a preemptive war. I question whether this will resonate with the majority of American voters - certainly hope that it will not.

Money, Elistists, and Bigger Business
First a disclaimer: Geo Will and McCain are on the member list of the CFR. Had enough? Obama "..flummoxed by the Clinton's Clintonness.." I doubt that -- he is at least smart enough to know a little about the Clintons. His response to their insults and lies is a planned process and, even though I despise his political views, has done fairly well. but it will get worse even though Billy Bob might cool it and allow the Klintoon supporters to do the dirt.

War
"every GOP candidate is trying to one-up the other candidates on his willingness to launch a preemptive war."

I feel that both parties have let the troops and all of America down by not having a real debate about the war. The Democratic opposition was so fanatical, Bush-hating, Vietnam-imitating, and partisan that it is only a real alternative to someone on the Far Left who is a pacifist. Bush on the other hand never discussed the reasons for the second, new mission in the war.

So there has been no real debate at all. Meaningless talk about winning and losing, and wars that ended decades ago. No one ever said what winning is.

Wu Wei - Your comments are appreciated!
I am going to continue to hope that conservatives will hang on to win the nomination and the presidency. However, I am resigning myself to the fact that the next four years may be "rebuilding years" for the conservative cause. I can't think of anything that could return the minds and hearts of the american people to conservative principles than four years of Hillary, Obama or McCain and a dem congress.

I believe the US can survive these four years of democrat control if at the end of it our citizens finally recognize and detest the liberal platform. We may even come out of it stronger in the end.

Danbar
BrianR and I, and a few others have discussed that. Obambi or Hitlery, either one in the POTUS will set back the libs 25 years or more with their imcompetence and impotent foreign policy.

Not to mention p*ssing us off with higher taxes to redistribute to the lazy and stupid in our society (their core voters).

Just A Couple of Things
Mr Nice Guy Obama - NOT. Want to know about his "Christian" conversion? Research his United Church of Christ! One of the precepts is TOTAL allegiance to Africa (NOT America). Just in case you missed it, Africa is basically a Muslim nation. Check it out!

Although I believe that Fred is the real hope for Reaganite Republicans, I am disappointed that he has attacked Mitt - and has NOT attacked the liberalism of John Boy. The pundits say Fred will endorse "his friend McCain" in a bid for the VP. God! I hope that isn't true!

Finally, when the primaries move into states where one MUST be registered GOP to vote GOP, I think Fred & Mitt will go to the front of the group, & John Boy's numbers will fall drastically. We will see!

To charlie
Re "There was a Democratic debate last evening?":

More like, there was a Democratic slug-fest last evening. Blood was spilled.

GunnyG & Danbar
I sincerely HOPE you are right - that we can "survive" 4 yrs of Baraki or Hitlery or Cainy. AND that they will set libs back 15 yrs. BUT those 3 have clearly demo'ed a willingness to subjugate the US to the UN, to self-interpret the constitution to curb its freedoms, and to ignore the wishes of US citizens.

My, God! As a country, we are fighting for our very survival! Just a couple of yrs with a dimmy congress has exascerbated our tribulation. America will be unrecognizable after 4 yrs of total lib control. Don't think so? Wait & see!!!

To save our economy, Vote Ron Paul
The only presidential candidate who understands the economy and will help this country back to economic solvency is Dr. Ron Paul. He has a plan to get us out of deficit spending by ending our over expanded world policing efforts, plans to controllably stop the war in Iraq, and will hold the Federal reserve accountable for their actions based on the constitution. Do not believe the main stream media for your information about Ron Paul (they hate him because he does not buy into the NAU or CFR), nor me for that matter, check him out yourself at ronpaul2008.com or google Ron Paul and watch all the you tube videos on him that do not have an agenda or ideology to sell you. You will be surprised what you see if you have not researched him for yourself. God Bless America and Dr. Ron Paul!

WHAT OR WHO NEXT?
It is clear who will be the Democrat nominee. It will be a Baby Boomer and it will be either Barak or Hillary, with the other becoming the Vice Presidential running mate.

It should be noted that John McCain, a member of the Silent Generation, has done well in states with open primaries, where Democrats and independents can vote in Republican primaries. Many primaries yet to come will be members-only primaries, which should favor Mitt Romney, a Baby Boomer, who has had major league executive experience in the business world, the 2002 Salt Lake City winter olympics, and Governor of Massachusetts.

In the end, the contest will be between Romney and another Baby Boomer former Governor, Mike Huckabee. Rudy Giulani and Fred Thompson are both from the Silent Generation and Thompson has had no executive experience. Duncan Hunter, a Baby Boomer and a true blue conservative, is out of the race. Hunter had no executive experience. The Republican nominee will not be a true blue conservative able to win the support of the critical conservative base. He will be "the lesser of two evils" and will lose to the Democrat. Once again, the conservative base will see to defeating yet another unacceptable candidate. The conservative base is willing to lose as many elections as it takes to force the GOP to run acceptable candidates.

Proud Liberal .......
You have not checked out Dr. Ron Paul if you believe every Republican Candidate is a warmonger. In fact, he is more anti-war than all the Democrats, and many independents and democrats, as well as true conservative Republicans have joined his revolution because he not only means what he says, he does what he says! Check out his record if you do not believe me. It is the grassroots support that has to wake evey one up to what Ron Paul stands for because the GOP and Main stream media are ignoring him, they are scared of his revolution which will give the government back to the people rather than the neocons and liberal elites! Go Ron Paul!!

McCain's VP
Will is wrong about McCain (Mac hasn't won the majority of Republican vote in any state yet), but imagine if he were right. McCain could pick Arlen Specter as his VP, and they could run as 'Grumpy Old Men' and 'Dumb and Dumber.' This would play well with the Hollywood elite.

Shhh...don't mention the Conservative...
your journalistic void is obvious, george. thought you'd at least be more clever for it.

ron paul for the long haul. he is steadily climbing and has the funds to do so. this will be a brokered convention.

Civic Pride!
Us Angelenos are bustin' our buttons with pride to know that our beloved Mayor Viva-la-raza was pimping for the Clinton Crime Family in Las Vegas, a town where an out-of-town mayor can get a friendly lap dance once the campaigning is done(an activity that certainly would appeal to a man of Viva-la-raza's well known tastes). a filandering, corrupt liberal politician...given Her Thighness' taste in men we might be looking at a VP choice here.

McCain=Loose Cannon
Conservatives will not vote for McCain under any circumstances. UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

Facts count, new math, internet.
The msm, the talking heads, Novack, etal, the press agents for the ones who have the re-election money are not used to dealing with facts.

So, fact is.
McCain is not a Republican, he is done now, internet money is he will have a fit and join the Democrats asap.

Huckabee has drawn his own lie line in the sand, the wind came up from the internet, spread the word of the lies and fraud, and Chuck Norriss wasted his name brand name for no good reason.

Thompson could be fooing himself, but the internet has seen all his reruns two times and
he slept on as they ran. He is lazy but not self destructive he will allow McCain to get older without his help.

Romney knows the new math, Romney knows the cost of do nothing, Romney has the support of the man none of the media will use his name, Tom Tancredo, and America is awake and sounding a bit upset about all the lies and fraud in Washington D.C. (of note: Michigan just said no to DL for illegals leaving only Hawaii,Maine,Maryland,New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington) and those states are not enough to get you elected Pres.

New day, new deal, old hacks, need new equipment to fit the new times.

so say some out loud and on the net

Opps, and Ron Paul.
Ya, the inter net found his Stormfront photo's and his newsletters and sorry to say Stromfront left their computer main frame open to all with no security and its all been downloaded, wow,
some trades made in maling list therein.

On the name thing on Tom Tancredo.
Americans have new trust in Tom,
he is "not" the love life of the msm
and that is a very good thing.

I Just Don't Understand either
I agree with danbar: "I Just Don't Understand Why Almost Every article I scanned this morning has "anointed" McCain as the "front runner". It just doesn't make sense to me."

By the numbers that count Mr. Romney is the current leader (57 - 42 - 26) That may change on Feb 6, but I really doubt it. And I know a lot of Reps who when it comes to Nov 4 will in no way mark for McLib. The pundits who insist on promoting him are opting for defeat.

momentum is pure spin
Danbar: "I Just Don't Understand Why Almost Every article I scanned this morning has "anointed" McCain as the "front runner".
"

Unfortunately it is many in the Republican media, not just the liberal ones. It is because doing that instead of being neutral gives the media control over the elections. That's why McCain has always stuck his head up the media's glass.

Momentum is totally a spin word. It has no standard meaning, but is defined which ever way boosts a reporter's favorite candidate.

So the rules from pro-McCain reporters say that any state McCain doesn't run in is meaningless, while any state Romney or Thompson skip gives McCain irrestible momentum. McCain's narrow margin of victory and the fact that 2/3 or 3/4 of the voters voted against him are not mentioned. The fact that McCain is cherry-picking the states he thinks he can win, while Romney is running in all of them is not mentioned. A McCain win is said to create irrestible momentum, while when Romney won in Michigan we were told that it meant nothing and McCain's "strong" second-place finish cancelled all momentum for Romney.

It will take tremendous will power
It will take tremendous will power for conservatives to hang in there in the campaign against McCain. The media will be spinning all the way, and some of the current situation boosts McCain. Lots of conservatives are voting against him, but they are splitting their vote several ways so McCain squeaks by. The problem is that Super Tuesday is only 2 weeks away and no one might drop out before then. A second problem is that some of the states on Super Tuesday are winner take all. So if the situation doesn't change, McCain would "win" those states, all the delegates, with 25% or 30% of the vote. That would give him a delegate lead, and the media would be pushing the other candidates to drop out. 55% of the delegates will be chosen by Super Tuesday. More are in the next week. So McCain could end up in a lead with that many delegates chosen, and massive pressure building for conservatives to surrender to him. We and Romney, etc. would need to decide to fight to the convention, in the face of tough odds and the hostile media.

A conservative's autopsy of the GOP
It may be perplexing, even uncomfortable, for the "base" to realize, but for a republican to win today, he must appeal to a far broader population than is constituted by the "base".

What is the GOP "base" anyway? Once upon a time, the "base" meant fealty to traditional conservative principles.

But therein lies the problem.

Much of the GOP power structure is opposed to conservatism. This inclues Karl Rove, G.W. Bush, former speaker Delay, and others.

I consider myself a conservative, and as such, a member of the "base". But I have little(almost nothing)in common with G.W. Bush, Speaker Delay, Karl Rove, and the neocons who now decide what constitutes policy in the GOP.

The power brokers within the GOP not only abandoned conservative principles, they have desecrated them.

There are hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of conservatives who feel the way I do.

We are looking for some drastic alternative, radical change in direction, from the power brokers who now dictate official GOP policy.

Any GOP candidate who is serious about winning the whitehouse in November's election must not only hold onto the base, but reach out to moderate conservatives who are independent and those democrats who reject the leftward direction of the Democrat party.

Unfortunately, there is not always a "Ronald Reagan" available every time one is needed.

We need an American President
"So far, Romney has won the most Republican votes and delegates, but Rudy Giuliani could bolt to the front in both categories on Feb. 5."
Why isn't Ron Paul mentioned in your article? With Ron Paul getting 14% of the vote (and 4 delegates) in Nevada, and Rudy only getting 4% (and only 1 delegate}.
Chuck Baldwin had you media guys pegged right, when he said:
"The Establishment hates Ron Paul because his honesty and integrity expose the rest of them for the moral reprobates they are. Their own conscience cannot bear the sight of him. His very presence condemns them. Their personal greed and ambition cringe at the very thought of Ron Paul. If Dr. Paul became President, the Gig would be up! It would be Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday at Tombstone all over again. They know it, and they will fight like mad to keep their corrupt stranglehold on American politics."

"Another reason the Establishment hates Ron Paul is because he is a true American--and there are not very many true Americans left in Washington, D.C., these days. You see, Ron Paul has read and studied American history. He understands constitutional government. He knows what real money is--and is not. As historian and author Thomas DiLorenzo said, Ron Paul is a modern-day Thomas Jefferson." Chuck Balwin

We are not going to find what we are looking for in the GOP. Neither party has anything to offer but more of the same old same old. If we think that America can once again vote the lesser of two evils and come up with a different result, then we missed Einstein's prescient view:
Doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result defines insanity. Is America insane? It certainly looks that way.

If we want common sense solutions to the challenges of the 21st Century, we are going to have to change how we think. We simply cannot afford another elite from either party to be President. It will be a disaster that will bring us more big government, less personal freedoms, and greater influence to the internationalists who hate America.

If we can reject the idea that we have no other choice, nowhere else to go, then we can find a way to restore the founding principles that built this great nation. I urge all to visit my website, JOEOLIVAFORPRESIDENT.ORG. It is the one place to learn how the elites have squandered our resources, weakened our military, sold out our sovereignty, and mortgaged the future, all with the goal of keeping themselves in power.

Check out the site, why not? The elites have robbed us of our inheritance! Why should we trust them or look to them for any real progress. This is the time and the election to reclaim what is rightfully ours. If not now, when will it be so? Thanks, Joe

update for taxfreekiller
OR is no longer offering DLs for illegals. The people spoke to the Gov and he was forced to capitulate.

Florida: Vote Mitt Romney

Romney is the "Real Conservative Change" we need for America. Mitt's got plans for economic leadership, national security, immigration reform and strong family values. Romney delivers on every score. Vote: Republican, Willard Mitt Romney for President.

The pundits are driving me crazy
We have only had primaries/caucuses in about four states now and McCain is the winner. How is that? Because the liberals want it that way. Since he nearly constantly votes the way of the liberal Democrats and the MSM is liberal, they are doing their usual propagandizing and brainwashing in the hopes of controlling the election and pushing it their way. Same with Hillary. The MSM has been touting Hillary for president for years. There are way too many people in this country who believe what they hear and hear what they want to believe. A vote for Hillary is a vote for Marxism/Socialism. If you asked the average American if they would vote for these things, they would be horrified that you would even suspect they would, yet it never dawns on them that all her "promises" are based on taking away their freedoms and putting their lives in the hands of the federal government. If she wins, the citizens of the United States can kiss what's left of their freedoms good-bye - the ones that the Patriot Act hasn't already decimated. And God forbid she signs on to the Kyoto Accord!

How can it be that people are so unaware of the VLWC attempt to kill Reagan conservatism? The attacks on Christian leaders (some self induced) and the Clintonista machine (From "Its the economy, stupid" to "Sex in the White House is private") combined with the anti-Bush spin of appointed president, dumb, neocon, oil conspirator, etc, etc ad nauseum have produced the perception of a completely divided country which was caused by conservative, corrupt, religious kook hawks and not by them.

Bottom line is that the best candidate, Fred Thompson, has been buried, with help from conservative media and the propaganda is the inevitableness of a dim takeover.

I don't see it. Americans overcame the anti-Bush attack of '04, the shamesty bill and the Iraq loss before the surge even started. This economy is going to focus on the dim leadership of 07-08 and its not going to be pretty. Americans are going to reject anti-American, taxing and illegal/terrorist loving dims. Its too late for the dim candidates to show anything different no matter how much the media tries to spin it in the general election.

bygone era
Its going to be interesting in terms of the largest minority being Hispanics. The question of how the second largest, blacks, will react and interpret that is whole other issue. I am not sure yet, and numbers will have to verify, how well their electoral status is thriving and actively voting. (more than blacks? how they trend?) I think endless conclusions will be drawn from this election, some more valid than others.

Is that where we are, factoring and handicapping elections by group? How much further can we factionalize society? For the record, neither of the current Democrats is or resembles a Moynihan. But thanks for the reminder of the good days.

indyconantidem
Unfortunately you are totally consumed by partisan politics. To you, it is all about evil democrats and good republicans.

To me, it is about fealty to conservative principles, and how the Republican party under G.W. Bush has betrayed them.

Bottom line: A true conservative intuitively understands current GOP policy is repugnant to conservative principles.

To muddy the waters by demonizing democrats, and thereby excusing Bush, Rove, Delay, et al, is precisely why the GOP is where it is today.

McCain/Huckabee
or anybody but Romney. Like many others on TH, I consider myself to be a devout conservative, but I wouldn't walk across the street to spit on Romney, let alone vote for him.

That being said, everyone is entitled to their own opinions and should be able to express them freely without insults from others. Romney is a dishonest pandering liberal trying to sell himself as a conservative and I for one am not buying it!

jerabaub
Cheers,it’s okay. As of now the democrats saw their own epiphany in Obama or Edwards, who in reality are just another partisan politician on the campaign trail, like Hillary. At least Republicans, most of them, are skeptical about the campaign kabuki dance.

Fred, Alas, May Not Be There For My Vote
As the condidates are winnowed, it looks as if my favorite candidate, Fred, will be casting his support behind someone else. Too bad.

Who do I end up supporting? All the rest seem so Liberal. I guess I better take new inventory of the prospects.

No excitement. Mostly resignation. Not good.

"Here we are in the midst of the biggest military humiliation in our history, bogged down in diplomatic odium all over the planet when we least need it, in hock to our biggest future economic competitors, our oil and food running out, our frontiers penetrated by millions of potentially irredentist aliens, our forces near to breaking-point, our Federal finances going the same way, dollar tanking, stock market having a nervous breakdown.... "

yawn.....

Jerabaub Lost In Fog Of Campaign Promise
Jerabaub offers, "To me, it is about fealty to conservative principles, and how the Republican party under G.W. Bush has betrayed them."

How so?

As I recall, Bush has gone after everything that he promised: Education spending, Immigration reform, Social Security. How is that a betrayal? When you knowingly elect a liberal Republican, do not get upset when he delivers as promised. He has been who he is from day one. He did not lead the Republican Party, we did the leading -- with our votes. Bush is who we put in office and Bush is who we got.

We were not victims that got betrayed.

On the other hand, his foreign policies and actions have been no less than appropriate, and, in line with a Republican leader.

An African American?
Whatever else Barack Hussein Obama may be, an African-American he is not. By common usage this term is applied to citizens of the United States of African descent whose ancestors were brought to this country in chains, who were stripped of their names, their language, their traditions, their culture, and their heritage.

None of these things apply to Senator Obama who knows exactly who he is and who his ancestors were.

Barack Obama, Sr., who came to this country of his own free will, was born in Kenya, and was of Luo ethnicity. Senator Obama’s mother was the late Ann Dunham Obama of Northern European ancestry.

When Barack Obama, Sr., “married” Ann Dunham he already had a wife back in Kenya. Perfectly legal in Kenya as under Sharia Law a Muslim is allowed up to four wives and as many concubines as he can afford to purchase, but under U.S. law, and the marriage did take place in Hawaii, a man is allowed only one wife at one time. In other words the marriage was, under U.S. Law, fraudulent.

Finally, it is also an undeniable fact that Barack Hussein Obama was born into the Islamic faith and was considered by one and all a Muslim right into his middle teens. So, if he is now a practicing Christian, he is one by conversion and if so, there should be a verifiable baptismal certificate around.

Thompson is out
Fred Thompson dropped out. He didn't endorse anyone.

For Don
I know I should just ignore morons like this, but Don wrote:

"I consider myself to be a devout conservative, but I wouldn't walk across the street to spit on Romney, let alone vote for him."

No conservative I know would have such hate in him. I can understand why someone would prefer to vote for someone else, but this is a completely moronic statement.

I personally think Mitt is the most honest and best leader for the future of our party. His business background coupled with his conservative leadership as a governor in the most liberal state in the union best suits him for the job. I will not be voting for McCain but I also woon't be spitting on him.

Mac Moore
Yep, give Bush a pass.

Give him a pass on amnesty and the border issue, where his position and McCain's are almost identical.

Give him a pass on unprecedented, proflicate, spending, with the result being that Moody's will soon devalue the rating of U.S. Treasury bonds...what had been a hallmark of the strength of our economy.

Give him a pass on this grotesque, interventionist, arrogant neocon experiment to use our troops as agents in some half-baked socio/political expermiment to see if Islam and democracy are compatible.

Give him a pass on the Law of the Sea Treaty, which he supports.

Meantime, while Bush violates every precept of traditional conservatism, kool-aid drinkers swig their brew, demonize democrats, and let Bush skate free.

What a country!

FRED A STALKING HORSE?

.....Will ...I hope you are wrong about Fred ...If Fred is smart and wants to be VP he will keep his powder dry until a nominee is named ...

.....I think that McCain has as much chance to win the Republican nomination as Benedict Arnold has to have a National Holiday named in his honor ...

.....MY PREDICTION FOR FLA:

... 1. Giuliani by a slim margin

... 2. Romney a close second

... 3. McCain a distant third

... 4. Huckabee slightly behind McCain

.....A ton of Political experts and Pundits with egg on their faces for writing Giuliani off too soon .....COLOSSUS

Jerabaub Prefers Being A Victim
Jerabaub offers, "Give him a pass on amnesty and the border issue, where his position and McCain's are almost identical."

No. He does not get a pass. He got the vote.

We elected him and he delivered exactly as promised.

Your victim mentality gets you no sympathy from me. Did you really think that Bush would perform any different than he promised? Well, he did not lie to you. However, it sounds like you may have lied to yourself.

I think we got exactly what he promised. Although, we did get a little bit more than expected, as he responded to 9-11 with exceptional clarity.

LILLY

.....I am amazed that you are taking Obama's side against a woman ...I guess that makes you an "Auntie Oprah" .....COLOSSUS

Fred VP?????
No, Fred is not insane. Why would he want to be second banana to a maverick AH in a job that has been charectorized as being worth warm spit.

It isn't like he can't do anything else but feed at the public teet.

No, he will go back to Hollywood and come up with more lines like.....

McCain do squat even with a plan.

CHARLIE

.....My sources tell me that Giuliani has the Cuban vote sewed up ...they hate McCain because he wanted to normalize relations with Castro ...

.....Will ...Barak could learn Spanish and give speeches in the Barrios and 75 per cent of Latinos would never vote for him ...it's a genetic thing ...gee I thought you guys were political experts ...

.....Conservatives will not vote for McCain ...if McCain ends up with the nomination it means that Conservatism in America is dead .....COLOSSUS

Republican Party Has No Energy!
baseballdoc offers, ".....Conservatives will not vote for McCain ...if McCain ends up with the nomination it means that Conservatism in America is dead"

Agreed. At least, for now.

Without Fred, Romney has some good qualities, but he can not seem to get enough braodbase support to get things going.

If this keeps up, I see very little excitement in the Republican camp.

Wry Bread & Circuses

"The argument that the two parties should represent opposed ideals and policies, one, perhaps, of the Right and the other of the Left, is a foolish idea acceptable only to doctrinaire and academic thinkers. Instead, the two parties should be almost identical, so that the American people can throw the rascals out at any election without leading to any profound or extensive shifts in policy. Then it should be possible to replace it, every four years if necessary, by the other party, which will be none of these things but will still pursue, with new vigor, approximately the same basic policies."

----Carroll Quigley,
Tragedy and Hope

As the mystic, Arthur Edward Waite, might have asserted:

"This is the story of a long impertenance."

Romney may not be Reagan, but he's the
closest to him we have left in this race.

Romney is Presidential in demeanor, as well as being much MORE prepared than Reagan was (from 25 years of eminently successful *private sector* EXECUTIVE experience) for these times of economic uncertainty.

Romney does not have the easy-going "Now--there you go again.." charm of Reagan, but he is Conservative in all three areas: Economics, Defense, and Moral Values.

IMO, Romney is the most *formidable* candidate to go up against the DEM nominee--*especially* if it is HRC.

jerabaub
Where are you getting lost in the facts? The demonized dims have been doing all the demonizing since '96 (Gingrich will steal your SS and GOP is racist). After all they got handed their butts in '94 and have not regained them yet in spite of their anti-American rhetoric when it comes to war, prisoners, judges or illegals.

Bottom line: They will never stop taxing and the money will never produce anything but a guaranteed bureaucracy that we will continue to vote against. Have you learned nothing?

baseballdoc
don't be too hard on lilly, her post about the dem debate was actually spot on.
I had to make sure it was really her.
I guess she has "lucid moments"

what it tells me is even some liberals are sick of the politics of personal destruction of which the clintoons are Masters.

It's so much fun to watch the dems tear each other apart using the same dirty tactics they've accused the republicans of using for the past 30 years.

Writer's strike? who cares this is better than a sit-com any day :o)

Let's hear it for kool aid drinkers.
Mac Moore, I guess Bush's support of the amnesty legislation was one of reasons you voted for him.

I don't recall his campaigning for for that measure, but at any rate I am pleased that his position on amnesty met with your approval.

Yep, we got alot more than we expected when we voted for Bush.

A heck of alot more debt.

Indyconantidim, you need to straighten out Bush's personal friend Johnny Sutton who prosecuted Ramos and Campion, and gave immunity to an illegal drug smuggler who during the trial of the border agents continued to smuggle drugs into our nation, thanks to the deal from Sutton.

I can't prove it, but have a suspicion the Bush whitehouse was behind this prosecution.

It is not so important whether I have learned anything.

The nation, regrettably, has learned alot during the last seven years of the Bush administration...so much so, in fact, that it will be difficult for the GOP to overcome the handicap of the Bush legacy this November.

But, hey, sit back, relax, and have another swig of kool-aid.

How would we survive the USSC JUDGES
that a DEM Pres. now would appoint?

I'm replying specifically to the comments made this a.m. by Danbar and GunnyG, such as :

"I believe the US can survive these four years of democrat control if at the end of it our citizens finally recognize and detest the liberal platform. We may even come out of it stronger in the end." (Danbar at 10:08 a.m.)

Those bad, activist judges who believe in a "living, breathing Constitution" are appointed FOR LIFE!!

4 years in the wilderness
If this election didn't mean the life or death of our nation I'd say we need 4 years in the wilderness to get our act together.

But I don't know if we can last 4 years under queen hillary or obama.

The day after they pull our troops out, the ME will go nuts.

I don't think we can take that chance.

Now that thompson is gone, the closest thing to a real conservative we have left is Romney.

Judges
There I believe there are six (6) Judges who are over 60 years old; If only half of them retire or die in the next four years, it could change the balance of the Supreme Court for decades!

latins and blacks

i live in latin america, central america to be exact. i have driven most of the southern continents, and the length and breadth of mexico.

you do not wish to know the degree of racial animosity morenas have for negritos. while it is true many have no problems with blacks, those that do can be extremely prejudiced, and they are numerous.

the only thing that can drive latinos into the party embraced by black americans is the continued ignorance exhibited by the close the border, demand people speak english, deport em all, wall building idiots residing in the republican party. their yahooism and racism disguised as patriotism and love of law is pathetic and short sided.

conservatism would be the natural home of latinos here and abroad if american and latin conservatives were not so ignorant, selfish and myoptic. in the usa, the party that is supposed to embrace liberty instead is embracing mussolini like facism with the usual disguise of social conservatism. a pox on their ignorance

McCain As Frontrunner
Of course John McCain is the frontrunner. Both Obama and Clinton have anointed him as such, and we know the Democrats have been controlling the GOP nominating process due to open primaries. I can't see why the Democrats shouldn't continue their takeover of the selection process of the Republican nominee for President of the United States.

TriciaCT Got It Right
Hey, Boys & Girls,
I'm back! With Fred's retreat from the campaign wars, Mitt gets my vote & my support.

Unfortunately, all the Reaganite Republicans (Tancredo, Thompson, Hunter) are out of it. OR, are they? Consider this! If Mitt does get the GOP nomination, he probably will slect Tom, Fred, or Duncan as running mate. That would reunite all the GOP factions into a cohesive party. I believe such a ticket would doom the libs and send Billary, Edward, and maybe even Baraki away for good.

Maybe I'm just wishful thinking, but Mitt is now the Man.

TriciaCT & Jackpine & Mitt
Now you say you're worried about what kind of judges the democrats will select?

So am I.

But, Romney is your answer to this problem?
You think he's the most conservative?

Have you made any amount of effort to find out what type of judges Mitt selected for Massachusetts?

Please retink your position. The pass so many have given this candidate is astounding!

The Rock's Comment supporting Ron Paul
You said Dr. Ron Paul is the only candidate that understands the economy? He's a baby doctor, how does that qualify him as the best man on the economy. In addition, he's been in congress for a long, long time. The only thing he's accomplished is making a laughing stock out of himself, and by association those who follow him. I actually agree with a lot of his positions...he's just not the leader who can get anything done. He's demonstrated that for many years with nothing to show for his time in Congress.

His credibility is best demonstrated by his performance in the last Republican debate when he launched his diatribe about the other candidates wanting to use the naval event in the Persian Gulf with Iranian boats as an excuse to go to war. Then when told by the moderator that he was wrong in what the debaters had stated he said, “What I can’t hear very well”. I laughed out loud. At that moment I was reminded of Perot’s running mate the Admiral, a very good man but an embarrassment as a running mate.
So, if any of you are planning to use Paul’s or Fred’s absence from the ballot as an excuse to take your toys and go home, just remember that’s exactly how we ended up with this Clinton mess in the first place. Thank Ross Perot for inflicting the Clintons on America.

Mitt Romney is my candidate.

Go Huckabee!
Of course an inside the beltway elitist like Will doesn't like Huckabee, which is another reason to like Huck!

Mitt on the economy
Can Mitt turn a business profit? Sure. The one business that always turned a profit and didn't go bankrupt was Bain.

Did Mitt turn around a state. NO.
Massachusetts endured Mitt's first 2 1/2 years as Gov. with net job losses.
State ranking for job growth under Mitt's 4 year term as Gov.: 47th.

Was Massachusetts still in a deficit as Mitt left office? YES.

What plans does Mitt offer so far as POTUS?

Spend $20 billion a year on Detroit auto industry.

Spend $233 billion on stimulus package.

Cancel payroll taxes for those 65 and older and the employer portion too.

Mitt has said he would stop the over spending as usual by Washington insiders.

Great start Mitt.

Huckabee is done but Fred isn't??
Only in George Will's world does the man who drops out (Thompson) have more of a chance than the man who has 4 times the delegates.

pro-v1
You make the same error many do regarding Mitt. He was governor of the most LIBERAL state in the union. This is a state that elects Kerry and Kennedy to life terms. That a man like Mitt was elected is pure magic. That he was unable in 4 years to turn Mass into a conservative bastion is why you malign him?

Be nice or I will smack you with my Great Big Bertha.

Mitt's ESP

Mitt's Economic Stimulus Package would be more than covered by the surplus created when we stop providing health and welfare benefits to illegal immigrants.

same ol ignorant crap
anybody who keeps saying mitt didnt accomplish what he did accomplish in mass. is a friggin liar!
and that goes for pro-whatever !
i have read more on romney than PRO whatever will ever read...if you want the truth...and not the distorted bull ,that keeps surfacing click
on to http://www.evangelistsformitt.org! they have the
facts and plenty of them..dates,data,etc! next thing you know people like PRO will be saying mass. had a surplus income before mitt came along
and mass. is a very conservative state....and ted kennedy is a senator from texas, and mary poppins is married to santa claus..and how does
PRO know all this because ron paul/santa claus/mary poppins told him!
how will mitt cover all of the things he is talking about--easy: knock off all the illegal
immigration benefits,go on the air and convince the general public to think of a way to send congress home for 4 years..with out pay! after all he is not going to not collect his pay..like he didnt collect his salary as gov.! is juan, rudy gonna forfeit their pay..they are not poor!

That's www.evangelicalsformitt.org
