Is President Obama's Afghanistan plan a step in the right direction?

On June 12, 1987, President Ronald Reagan declared, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" It was our generation's equivalent to "Remember the Alamo!" This month we celebrate the 20th anniversary of this wonderful declaration for the cause of freedom on behalf of repressed people in Central and Eastern Europe. We should renew our shared commitment with our allies in Europe because it is the transatlantic relationship that is America's anchor for global engagement.

Although Ronald Reagan's words must have seemed like only a dream, they resonated in the hearts of East Berliners who led restricted, hopeless lives. The dream of freedom did come true because of the steadfast, essential political and logistical support of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Chancellor Helmut Kohl. The moral compass was provided by the respected Pope John Paul II. And Lech Walesa, behind the Iron Curtain in Poland, had freedom lovers all over the world in solidarity with their cause.

Since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, it has become clear how beneficial a free, prospering, and whole Europe is to the transatlantic community. Germany is no longer a borderland. Many of the Central European states have joined us in Iraq and Afghanistan. But a central challenge today is Americans' and Europeans' lack a unity of purpose and shared definition of the threats we face.

President Bush embarks this week on a trip to a free Europe. On this trip—he is visiting Germany, Poland, Italy, Czech Republic, Albania, and Bulgaria—he must make clear to European partners that American leaders see the transatlantic relationship as our anchor for global engagement. He must also identify steps America and Europe should take jointly to address our shared challenges and worldwide threats.

Counter-terrorism. Today's war on terror is global, and America's efforts are strengthened by our allies. We need Europe's help and capabilities now more than ever. Our model should be the cooperative spirit in which the Taliban was toppled in Afghanistan through the joint efforts of the United States, Europe, and our Afghan allies.

Russia. Russia has the potential to have a tremendous positive relationship with its neighbors, however the Kremlin's intimidating tactics against Estonia and the latest cyber attacks emanating from Russia are of serious concern. Russia should join Europeans in embracing freedom and prosperity. America and Europe must speak clearly to Russia; while Russia's international integration is highly desirable, Russia must realize that undercutting the sovereignty and independence of neighboring states is not acceptable.

NATO's future. Since the world is now a cooperative concern, responsibility for global stability challenges fall on both the U.S. and Europe. NATO's future role needs to be clearly defined, and NATO should identify an harmonious agenda that continues to build on NATO's constructive role in the Balkans. The process of NATO expansion was a positive and tremendous motivator for reform in the post-communist states, and that process should continue.

Private sector. Today the bilateral strategic relationships between the U.S. and Poland, Hungary, and other Central European countries are the strongest they've ever been. That's why President Bush is visiting several of these countries this month, and that's why missile defense systems are being contemplated for placement in several of these countries. But the commercial relationships with these countries remain at a low level, and America should find many more opportunities for economic ties. It should be easier for the citizens of these countries to travel to the U.S. for tourism, education, or commerce. Allies and friendships in commerce must have better access to each other's countries for a stronger partnership.

The Europeans themselves are moving toward greater unity with the selection of Poland and Ukraine as hosts of the 2012 European Soccer Championships. This major European event will create a new major highway through these countries, and with the building of new stadiums, U.S. companies should look to assist in these projects. Russia, with its enormous energy reserves, will be more prosperous and ought to see the benefit of cooperation with Europe to diversify and improve its economy as a credible free country with reliable rules of law. As President Reagan vouched concerning our missile defense system: we can share aspects of the defense system with a cooperative, trustworthy Russia.

As we face, adapt, and decide our future action against present day threats, let us learn from Ronald Reagan's resolve to advance freedom. Based on shared values, let us build respectful, strategic alliances, expand beneficial interaction and private investment, creating more jobs, and always choose to stand strong together for freedom as we nurture the growing trees of liberty and plant new groves in Eastern Europe. The United States must have a dynamic, strategic agenda befitting a great power.

Something Doesn't Love a Wall
Nice to see Senator Allen back. He had a setback, but he still has a good future.

I disagree with Sen. Allen on immigration (I think). One of the big problems, as I've pointed out in detail on my blog (click on my name above), I've called the Mexico-U.S. fence "the Berlin Wall South." Some people don't like that, but if the fence fits, we have to wear it. I firmly believe the fence, beloved of the Tancredo types, will make things worse over the long run. Yes, the Berlin Wall was to keep people in, etc., etc., but I think fine distinctions will be lost on most people around the world. "Something there is that doesn't love a wall," as Robert Frost reminded me.

Anyway, nice to see George back.

Nice words but Bush with your help shredded those shared values and strategic alliances. The tree of liberty could use nuturing in the US as well as perhaps planting some new groves.

I posed this same question in
John Fund's article so here goes:

Fund writes: "Sadly, today Russia itself is slipping back into authoritarianism."

What you forgot to point out John is that our presidential front-runner Hillary Marxist Clinton, as well as our current commander-in-chief is marching the United States in that same direction.

When the wall came down, did it truly "sweep communism into the ash heap of history" or did it unleash it?

Our political dynamic is filled with individuals who unknowingly practice it's tenants, or have succumbed to it's illusion.

We've got a long way to go in order to defeat the communist element right here in the US. Pretending it doesn't exist doesn't do us any favors. If you want to gain an understanding of how communism was introduced right here at home, click on the following.

Have we truly defeated communism?

China: We Are Socialists!

This has been my point, we expect a Communist China to play by free market civilized principals. China has made it clear they will play under their rules and socialist system unless we stand up and play hard ball. Do you think the American economy can afford not to demand that China follow civilized rules of trade?

Beijing (FORTUNE) – Senior U.S. officials, led by Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson, arrived inside the Stalinist-style Great Hall of the People Thursday morning, briefed and breakfasted and eager to offer guidance to Chinese leaders on how to become a “responsible stakeholder” in the global economy

According to the English translation of her remarks, she repeated six times that China was “sticking to” its “new path of industrialization,” and three times that China was “continuing to improve” on reforms already in place. Substantial free-market change wasn’t part of the equation. “By following a path of building socialism with Chinese characteristics in an independent and self-reliant manner,” she said, “we have scored glorious achievements that attracted worldwide attention.”

At debate is China not playing by the rules of the trade agreement.

CNN-But Paulson said earlier this week China could and should do more to reduce its massive trade surplus and revalue its currency. And a WTO report released Monday complained bitterly about continued rampant counterfeiting and piracy, policies limiting imports and regulatory barriers to U.S. service companies

“We see troubling indications that China’s momentum toward reform has begun to slow,” US Trade Representative Susan Schwab, a participant in this week’s meeting, wrote in the Financial Times.

Did you meant to direct that toward John Konop....

Mr. Allen
"Since the world is now a cooperative concern, responsibility for global stability challenges fall on both the U.S. and Europe. NATO's future role needs to be clearly defined, and NATO should identify an harmonious agenda....."

Oh BS, Allen! Who said the world was a "cooperative concern" besides the one-world globalist socialists who are doing everything in their power to destroy the sovereignty of our country. And this "harmonious agenda" BS sounds way too much like the language used by the UN and Bush Security and Prosperity Partnership, when they speak of "harmonizing" U.S. laws and regulations so they fit with either the forementioned agenda.

Can you people see what BS Allen and others are piling on you? It's pure propagandized BS!

Our country is a sovereign nation. We shouldn't harmonize our laws with ANYONE'S! We should not be isolationist, but we'd darn well better wake up and smell the coffee that there is a huge move to sacrifice our sovereignty at the world government alter.

Illegal aliens were ALLOWED to come into our country. ON PURPOSE. That is why Bush has only given a cursory glance at enforcing our immigration laws. This is all about merging our country with Canada and Mexico. Yes, it's all about the North American Union. Why else do you think Bush is hell bound to pass his amnesty bill? Do you understand that his Security and Prosperity Partnership is sanctified in this legislation?

Some of us have allowed ourselves to believe the only reason this administration has refused to secure the borders, or our Congress voted to give illegals Social Security, free health care, free education, welfare, and on and on, is because they wanted their votes. COME ON!!! Do you REALLY believe that? Do you honestly believe that illegal aliens are going to be pro-Republican Party. Give me a break.

PLEASE, PLEASE, WAKE UP! Our country doesn't have much longer.

"As the details of the Kennedy-Kyl (K-K) amnesty/guest worker bill unfold, it is becoming apparent that the globalists' plan for the economic integration of North America is not just a figment of the imagination of conspiracy believers, or an "urban legend" as one newspaper called it, or even just a pipe dream of far-out world federalists. The K-K bill will accomplish economic integration by legalizing 20 million aliens immediately and inviting tens of millions more (relatives of the amnestied plus guest workers) to enter legally in the coming years."

Reagan was a Great Man

In Buna, Yugoslavia, we met a lady from England, who was an elected official with the Labor Party. She had recently visited a college in New York City, and said everyone there hated President Reagan, and he was going to be impeached. I told her, “Going to a college in New York City to learn about the political health of the US, is like going to a Doctor for a physical exam, and he only looks at your armpits.” And I was being polite when I said “armpits.” (This story was published as a “Letter to the Editor” in the Los Angeles Times.) (1985)

I had met with Governor Reagan several times in Sacramento, and while he was between Governor and President, his office was in the same building as mine, so we met and talked a dozen times. He was a wonderful man.

Contrast
What a statement about the free fall of the GOP in the past 20 years.

Republicans have gone from a smart, strong, decisive leader like Ronald Reagan to a stupid, arrogant, over-grown frat boy, easily manipulated by evil, destructive and dishonest little men.

Too bad.... it used to be a great party.

Irony
Just think Reagan said: "tear down this wall" and now his defective idealogical children are saying: "BUILD THIS WALL". I think some how that shows exactly how times change

Irrelevant
The Berlin Wall is irrelevant and so is the deceased Pres. Reagan. We have problems now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And by the way all you brainy folk....the wall divided a country Germany from itself. We need a wall on our southern border from another nation.

Walls
The difference of course being (to those who can think) that the Berlin Wall divided a country in half. The Mexican Border Fence, like the one the Israelis put up, is between two COUNTRIES to keep out INVADERS.

The Berlin Wall was put up to keep the citizens of an occupied half-nation from escaping. The Mexican Border Fence is being erected to keep foreign Invaders from GETTING IN.

Do you have screens on your windows? Do you know why they are there? Same reason we need that Mexican Border Fence.

WHAT 20 YEARS LATER REALLY MEANS
The average life expectancy of a Russian man has gone from 64 years to 58 since the Great Communicator conquered the Evil Empire. AIDS is epidemic and Russia and some of the former Soviet Bloc countries are now among the world's largest producers of gay pornography. Russia's assets were privatized in a fire sale to oligarchs by a drunkard, God rest his bloated soul, and one of the few bright spots in their wretched existence is the overinflated price of oil because of the instability Bush has created with his Rape of Nanking.
You all need to know something...at this very moment the Bush Administration, through its appointee to the Postal Board of Governors, James Miller, is trying to break the National Association of Letter Carriers to privatize the entire United States Post Office so it can outsource to low wage, low security letter carriers and handlers. If you think Anthrax to Tom Daschle's office was spooky, wait until your mail is carried by minimum wage inner city gang members hired because of their networks, not background checked trained employees controlled by union regulations. Why is this important? Because it wasn't Ronald Reagan who brought down the Berlin wall and destroyed the Evil Empire, a notion with which many of you have been abused. It was a Polish trade union called Solidarity that had a little more to do with it.
So next time you poop on the unions, try to remember that little part of history.
(Timothy Garton Ash, an Oxford University historian, put it this way: "Without the pope, no Solidarity. Without Solidarity, no Gorbachev. Without Gorbachev, no fall of communism.")

20 years ago today...
This also marks the vicennial of Reagan elevating KETCHUP to vegetable status! :o)

Robert
“The GOP is now a product of people who get their "news" from entertainers like Rush and Gordon and Laura I. and other so called "commentators" whose main purpose in life is keeping their loyal listernship "loyal".”

It’s NOT just the GOP that’s using talk radio to their advantage. The Dems tried the same thing with Air America and other left-wing radio shows. They were so boring that no one listened. They dropped off the air one by one and replaced with conservative shows. Face it, you guys are losing your grip on the media. Limbaugh alone has between 12 to 20 million listeners daily (Hmmm, familiar numbers. Could all the illegal aliens be listening to Rush?). The liberal media monopoly is over. Check out CNN and Headline News lately? That is where the Dems are getting killed, not the Limbaughs. The soccer moms and others who get their daily news from CNN are now getting the whole picture, especially on immigration. That is the reason the amnesty bill will never pass. Most Americans know about the bill now, not just the “nutty base”, and their representatives are getting an earful.

Steve
I agree. Good to see George Allen back. I believe he should be running for president. I never understood why he chose to drop out of the race after the “macaca” comment. Biden and Hillary have made similar tongue-in-cheek comments, and it didn't affect their chances. I predict that he will run in 2012, especially if we get four years of Hillary or Obama.

RESPONSE TO HOUND DOG
Hound Dog wrote of progressive radio shows "They were so boring that no one listened. They dropped off the air one by one and replaced with conservative shows."
Or another possibility simply was that advertisers' dollars were directed by their boards to conservative shows, thereby starving the liberal shows of revenue? It wouldn't be the first time American capital put someone out of business because of the concentration of advertising revenue. Sort of like when Ford Motor Company would fire you if you worked at Dearborn and drove onto the lot in a Chevy...Why aren't truly good progressive documentaries being aired on American television, and unedited? Maxed Out is a good one or Pilger's Palestine is Still the Issue...maybe because the folks in charge of our airwaves have an agenda? And that agenda is to keep the cannon fodder coming in service of global corporate profits. The American public has been SO PROPAGANDIZED that it would take years of re-education to correct their thinking. Until then we slouch towards Corpora-Fascist Third World status. Here's another example...why aren't we looking at Israel's public healthcare system? They are after all our closest ally...yet the name Israel never seems to come up in MSM articles about the national healthcare debate.
Throughout history native oppressed populations have turned on invading liberators, after the natives had been rallied by their own native oppressors through propaganda. See Edward Luttwaks article in Harpers about that.

kassandrasduplex
“Throughout history native oppressed populations have turned on invading liberators, after the natives had been rallied by their own native oppressors through propaganda.”

This is the freest country on earth. Like most enlightened liberals, you have no idea what real oppression is. You sit in front of your computer and criticize your own country on everything. To the libs, the US is the embodiment of evil. We oppress our people. We torture people. We pollute. We inflict poverty. We are the bullies. Then, you turn right around and praise Cuba, Venezuela, China and every totalitarian regime. Have you ever been to these countries? Believe me, your views would change overnight. These are the oppressors, torturers, polluters, poverty-stricken and the bullies. Everyone wants to come here. No one is leaving. Wake up and have a sip of reality.

kassandrasduplex
As to your other comment regarding propaganda radio, “Advertisers' dollars were directed by their boards to conservative shows, thereby starving the liberal shows of revenue”.

Numbers don’t lie. Here are the daily audience for top radio hosts.
Limbaugh: 14 million
Hannity: 12 million
Savage: 8 million
Dr. Laura: 8 million
Ingraham: 5 million
Boortz: 4 million
Gallagher: 4 million
O’Reilli: 4 million

That’s almost 60 million listeners everyday, and that is just the top eight hosts. I don’t know about you, but most people don’t decide which station to listen to by the number of dollars corporate sponsors give them. BTW, George Soros’s billions propped up Air America , but it did not bring in any more listeners.

Hate America Radio Network
You know how you can tell those who have not listened to the Hate spewed on the Hate America Radio Network? It is those who don’t mention the Hate Bitches like Stupid Miller, Rutty Roads.

I suppose I listen to them more minutes in any week than I have listened to Rush in a year, and they spew more hate, more stupid comments in 20 minutes than Rush has in 20 Years.

I listen to Hate America because it's good to know the enemy, if I listen to Rush it's like talking to the mirror.

jim
You got it. The Dems think people like Limbaugh have some magical brainwashing ability that he can convert all listeners to his way of thinking. He gets the listeners because he is validating what they already believe, as you said, like talking to the mirror. It’s like car commercials. GM is not doing the commercials to convince new buyers, because the buyers already know what they want. The commercials done are to validate to people who already own GM cars that they have purchased the best.

The current immigration bill debate is a prime example. For years, the Limbaughs have been telling us that illegal immigration is not that important to the GOP base, that it is only a fringe issue. Well, listeners have been telling the Limbaughs they are wrong, but they were too busy carrying water for the Republican Party. So much for the libs’ theory of ditto heads and brainwashed robots. It is the listeners who have forced the Limbaughs to finally talk about illegal immigration.

Barinwash the Dems
Hound Dog writes:

people like Limbaugh have some magical brainwashing ability that he can convert all listeners to his way of thinking.
===========

Let's change the name Limbaugh to Gore, Clinton, Kerry, Kennedy and a million more, and on and on, and see how the sentence looks to you then.

jim
Now his disfunctional, out of touch political children scream: BUILD THAT WALL from courage and strength to cringing in fear WOW that was quick.... Which for the record, include the chickenhawks Limbawl, Hannity. et al
