Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

- The Following speech was delivered to the meeting of the Council for National Policy on Saturday, May 12, 2007.

One thing about folks knowing you are going to speak at the Council for National Policy, you get lots of advice as to what to say. A lot of good advice. Good talking points. In fact enough for several speeches. Also, some of your friends, knowing that you are thinking about running for President, urge you to give a rousing campaign speech

Hopefully there will be an opportunity to do all of those things but tonight instead of all of that, I want to talk a little about what should be the origin of all those talking points. This would be the principles on which they are based — first principles. The principles you have been defending since 1981.

For Americans, these are found in the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. They include a recognition of God and the fact there are certain rights that come from Him and not the government. They are based upon a respect for the wisdom of the ages, and a belief that human beings are prone to err; that too much power must never rest in too few hands. The result is a system of checks and balances and a separation of powers that flow from our guiding documents and from the rule of law.

Finally, if we want to change or alter these concepts or any provision in the Constitution, we are given a specific method to do that — by Constitutional Amendment.

So how are we doing as a nation in upholding these first principles? The answer is we could be doing better … a lot better.

I want to tell you a couple of short stories from my own personal experience. Each story is about a man. They are both public figures and I was blessed with the opportunity to be of some small assistance to each of them. Their circumstances have to do with these first principles.

First, an observation. Our nation is based upon the proposition that our statutes, common law and the Constitution will not only be applied fairly between litigants, but will also be observed by the government. People will be able to rely upon the rules, usually long established, and their consistent application. This engenders respect for the law. It is a sad irony that a nation that is so dedicated to the rule of law is doing so much to undermine the respect for it.

Our founders established an independent federal judiciary to decide cases, not social policy. Yet more and more that is exactly what it is doing. Roe v. Wade is a classic example. And nowhere is it more apparent than with regard to the issue of church and state.

Many federal judges seem intent on eliminating God from the public schools and the public square in ways that would astound our founding fathers. We never know when a five to four Supreme Court decision will uphold them. They ignore the fact that the founders were protecting the church from the state and not the other way around. Instead of having the basic rules of society changed in the way clearly set forth in the Constitution by two-thirds votes of both Houses and by three-fourths of the states, the entire process is reversed by the stroke of a pen and supporters of the rule of law have the burden placed upon them, which is usually insurmountable.

We have always held our federal judiciary in high esteem, even at a time when most of our institutions are under assault. However, if judges continue to act like politicians they will get the respect currently given to politicians. It is already rapidly headed in that direction. The antidote for this, of course, is good judges. And presidents who know one when they see one … one like John Roberts.

John Roberts is the first of the individuals I referred to earlier. The President asked me to help Judge Roberts through the Senate confirmation process. Certain things were apparent at the outset — he was a Conservative, he believed deeply in first principles, including the rule of law and, lastly, his opponents would do everything they could to defeat his nomination.

Judge Roberts’s character, intellect, and devotion to the law were unassailable. Of course for a conservative this is just the beginning of the discussion, not the end. The usual liberal outside groups mounted their horses and charged, but we fought the battle and won. However, we were reminded once again of several things during this process.

· What a steep price even the best Conservative nominee has to pay. The Washington Post “Style” section criticized the way his small children were dressed. The New York Times was caught trying to get the adoption records of his children unsealed.

· We were reminded how desperate the liberal community is to keep the deck stacked in their favor.

· And most importantly, we were reminded that the quality of an individual can overcome all obstacles. So he is now Chief Justice John Roberts.

I kept wondering throughout all of this, why would politicians want this to be the last experience a man would have before he assumed the role of Chief Justice of the United States?

This also brought home again the importance of elections of a President and the Senate. It is ironic indeed that any President’s legacy could well be formed on the basis of something that is usually very far from the public’s consciousness — the nomination of federal judges. And on this nomination and that of Justice Alito this President can be proud and our entire nation can be grateful.

The other man is in a less lofty position. After years of sacrifice and service to his country, he sits at home with his wife and two children awaiting a prison sentence. His name is Scooter Libby.

As you may recall, for some inexplicable reason, the CIA sent the husband of one of its employees to Niger on a sensitive mission. She had suggested it. He came back to the U.S. and proceeded to publicly blast the administration. Naturally, everyone wanted to know “who is this guy?” and “why was he sent to Niger?” Just as naturally, the fact that he was married to Valerie Plame at the CIA was leaked. Having virtually guaranteed that Ms. Plame’s identity would be ultimately disclosed by using her, shall we say, “politically active” husband, the CIA then demanded that this leak of her name be investigated by the Justice Department for a possible violation of the Intelligence Identities Protection Act. The Justice Department, bowing to political and media pressure, appointed a Special Counsel to investigate the leak and promised that the Justice Department would exercise no supervision over him whatsoever — a status even the Attorney General does not have.

The only problem with this little scenario was that there was no violation of the law, by anyone, and everybody — the CIA, the Justice Department and the Special Counsel knew it. Ms. Plame was not a “covered person” under the statute and it was obvious from the outset.

Furthermore, Justice and the Special Counsel knew who leaked Plames’s name and it wasn’t Scooter Libby. But the Beltway machinery was well oiled and geared up so the Special Counsel spent the next two years moving heaven and earth to come up with something, anything. Finally he came up with some inconsistent recollections by Scooter Libby, who had been up to his ears studying National Intelligence Estimates. But he worked for Dick Cheney, so that apparently was enough for the special counsel.

I didn’t know Scooter Libby, but I did know something about this intersection of law, politics, special counsels and intelligence. And it was obvious to me that what was happening was not right. So I called him to see what I could do to help, and along the way we became friends. You know the rest of the story: a D.C. jury convicted him.

In our system all citizens are guaranteed equal protection. And when we appropriate unlimited resources and give unlimited power and direct it all toward one individual, there had better be extraordinary circumstances. There were none here. Just a case of public officials without the courage to do the right thing and stop this farce before it began. In no other prosecutor’s office in the country would a case like this one have been brought.

Incidentally, this was shortly after Sandy Berger, the National Security Advisor to President Bill Clinton, received a slap on the wrist by the Justice Department for lying about and then confessing that he stole and destroyed what we think were classified documents. We’ll never know, because he destroyed them. But we do know that he didn’t want the 9-11 Commission to see them. But nobody was clamoring for his head. Back to Libby.

I have called for a pardon for Scooter Libby. When you rectify an injustice using the provisions of the law, just as when you reverse an erroneous court decision, you are not disregarding the rule of law, you are enforcing and protecting it.

The Roberts nomination shows us that we can win against those who would use the Constitution for their own ends, even though it is always a fight.

Libby’s prosecution demonstrates how injustices can occur when public officials lack the courage to go against the public clamor and to do the right thing, thereby perverting the rule of law.

All this of course, reminds us of what Washington has become and why more good people are not coming into public service. Add to that the bitter divisiveness on Capitol Hill with regard to all things large and small, and you can almost see Americans throwing up their hands. They’ve got to be wondering, how are today’s leaders going to lead us with regard to all these difficult issues if they can’t even agree on fundamentals — things that are supposed to bind us together.

Some of you may think that this is not a very optimistic outlook. I’m reminded of something my Daddy used to say: A man who walks around smiling all the time can’t possibly know what’s going on. However, I am optimistic. I think we all are. But as Americans, our optimism comes not from an analysis of how things are, but from our belief that we can change what we see for the better.

We have road maps — at least two of them in fact — the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution — to guide us. How can we look at the world without thinking about inalienable rights, and doing everything necessary to protect our country? How can we think of fiscal policy or even health-care policy without remembering the limitations appropriately placed upon government and the importance of individual freedom? This is a message that needs to be delivered. The people in this room have been delivering it for a long time. We must rededicate ourselves to this commitment and to the magnificent legacy we have been given. And I am honored to join you in this effort. Thank you.

Principle trumps power

Does anyone support Gonzales staying as Attorney General? Why would President Bush appoint Gonzales as AG knowing his past ethical problems?

USA TODAY-Three years ago, an attorney general, his deputy, the FBI director and others put their jobs on the line to block a White House wiretapping plan. The story, revealed Tuesday, speaks worlds about the importance of upholding principle under pressure — and about the current attorney general’s failure to do just that.

James Comey: “I thought I just witnessed an effort to take advantage of a very sick man, who did not have the powers of the attorney general,” the former deputy AG says

James Comey testimony should be seen no matter what party you are in!

Stick a fork in him....he's done
I watched last night's debate......It was the first time I've ever seen Ron Paul and frankly I can't understand what makes his 'few' die-hard fans so devoted to him. It's no wonder he's failed miserably in his prior 5 'runs' (it's more like 'crawls') for the presidency. The guy has absolutely no charisma!
(He reminds me of Ralph Nader...another smug and sanctimonious 'thinks-he-knows-it-all' type.)

He might as well go back on the libertarian ticket. Last night he blew any chance he had for the republican nomination (not that he had a snowballs chance in hail anyway). He shot himself in the foot with his reasons we were attacked on 9/11 'answer' and Rudy slammed a sledge hammer down on top of that foot!

Ron Paul showed his extreme isolationist viewpoint and even worse....his 'Neville Chamberlin-clone' appeasement mentality....for all to see!

Bureaucratic mess
Great speech! I would really like to hear how Fred Thompson will attack the bureaucratic mess we have in Washington.

For the fans of Newt, this is one area where he could really make a big difference.

Magnificus
Great points, thanks for the back up. People like PJ got us Bill Clinton for 8 years. They focus all their energy around one issue and stay to an extreme side of it and if they don't get their way they sit out. I just hope history doesn't repeat itself in 08 because it could be even worse...Bill's wife!

FDT
I love Fred's latest flick, all 38 seconds of it;

No more discussion here. Can we have a lot more of it, please?

A few quick points...
then off to bed.

1. A dose of reality... Ron Paul doesn't stand a snowballs chance in HE double hockey sticks in getting the nomination or or POTUS. Neither do most of the third tier candidates. And all for a multitude of reasons - money, ink, etc. It just ain't gonna happen no matter how much you wish it to be. They don't have the gravitas; the cachet. And they can't get it.

2. Thompson STARTS with the gravitas and moves up from there. Heck, he ain't even in the race and he's running third - ahead of Paul et. al. and they've all announced.

3. As Thompson IS NOT a candidate, he can speak in platitudes and wrap himself in the flag, Constitution, Mom and Apple Pie.

4. When and if he does announce, he'll have a lot to answer for... including CFR and any other areas that may be of concern to the base.

5. The fact that here on TH he can post a speech and get 94 (and counting) comments; a running debate amongst conservatives (yes, despite our disagreements, we all have a common goal); and a boatload of support should tell everyone something.

6. We all agree that we won't vote for a lib (I Hope!) and two of the three frontrunners on our side of the ledger are just that and the third might as well be.

7. As a body politic, we are BEGGING for someone to step up to the plate with staunch conservative values that we can (mostly) agree with. Is it 95%? Is it 90%? Whatever the percentage that we agree with FDT, it certainly is far better than the top three that are currently in the running.

I say, let the guy expound. You may like what you hear, then again, you may not. For my money, so far he's hitting all the right buttons. When he finally announces, then I'll make my decision... and only then.

Stix

So, wiz
You are advocating revolution?

Miss Anthony—May it please your honor, I shall never pay a dollar of your unjust penalty. All the stock in trade I possess is a $10,000 debt, incurred by publishing my paper—The Revolution—four years ago, the sole object of which was to educate all women to do precisely as I have done, rebel against your man-made, unjust, unconstitutional forms of law, that tax, fine, imprison and hang women, while they deny them the right of representation in the government; and I shall work on with might and main to pay every dollar of that honest debt, but not a penny shall go to this unjust claim.

And I shall earnestly and persistently continue to urge all women to the practical recognition of the old revolutionary maxim, that "Resistance to tyranny is obedience to God."

Judge Hunt—Madam, the Court will not order you committed until the fine is paid.

An Account of the Proceedings on the Trial of Susan B. Anthony on the Charge of Illegal Voting,. . . (Rochester, N.Y., 1874), 81-85

The old revolutionary maxim:
"Resistance to tyranny is obedience to God."

Excellent Speach Senator Thompson!
I would have enjoyed listening in person.

4th amendment????
"...and particularly describing the place to be searched,"

Jihadists ARE using our own laws, our own protections to their benefit against us. You are trying to protect and preserve something that won't amount to one of Cheryl Crowe's squares if we lose this fight.

So if you really don't see that sentence as the problem for Justice as they try to investigate terrorists & enemy combatants and keep them from killing you then you have blinders on.

Think about 'one-use phones' and other high tech means for threats (Wahabi Islamists) to YOUR security evading capture while they make plans to kill you, or your family or neighbors.
Or at least think about them trying to kill ME if you don't care about the others.

Oh yeah. Grow up.

Not sure if quote is completely accurate:
"I have lived a long time, and the longer I live the more convining proofs I see of this truth: that God governs in the affairs of men.And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid?" Benjamin Franklin
I think he also said..."A Republic, if you can keep it.."

Does anyone know much about Brownback?

GWB
The 4th ammendment applies to US citizens under investigation for domestic crimes, not foreign enemies. Please show me the constitutional authority of congress to monitor, impede or control wartime intelligence gathering in any way. Quoting the lame Alberto Gonzalez won't cut it.

Where did you see me propose a world legislature with authority over us? I'm talking about an alliance of democratic nations with mutual interests that would replace our participation in the UN, not a world government.

And enough with the "talking points" already. Like violence and profanity, this phrase is the first refuge of the man who has just run out of ideas. Of course all of your thoughts are original and profound, any anyone who disagrees is spewing talking points. Right.

PJ
This is twice (at least) now that you have accused FDT of being "illegal friendly" to coin a phrase. For your benefit, and anyone else who might think you know what you are talking about I will quote THE MAN from his FNS interview with Chris Wallace on 3/11/07...

THOMPSON: Well, that's true, as a general statement. We woke up one day after years of neglect and apparently discovered that we have somewhere between 12 million and 20 million illegal aliens in this country. So it became an impossible situation to deal with.
I mean, there's really no good solution. So what do you do? You have to start over. Well, I'm concerned about the next 12 million or 20 million.

So that's why enforcement, and enforcement at the border, has to be primary.

I think most people feel disillusioned after 1986 when we had this deal offered to them before, and now we're insisting that, you know, we solve the security problem first, and then we'll talk about what to do with regard to other things - CERTAINLY NO AMNESTY or nothing blanket like that.

But figure out some way to make some differentiation between the kind of people that we have here.

You know, if you have the right kind of policies, and you're not encouraging people to come here and encouraging them to stay once they're here, they'll go back, many of them, of their own volition, instead of having to, you know, load up moving vans and rounding people up. That's not going to happen.

Take special not of the phrases;
"CERTAINLY NO AMNESTY or nothing blanket like that."
AND
"...if you have the right kind of policies, and you're not encouraging people to come here and encouraging them to stay once they're here, they'll go back, many of them, of their own volition..."

BTW
It has been my 'personal observation' that most people who ARE members of MENSA don't go around trying to impress people with self proclamations of their "card carrying" status in the organization.

at least sponsor and mentor some younger "turks" who can debate, discuss, dialogue with college kids

"Re UN - An ineffective waste of time and money. I would favor the creation of a league of democratic nations. WTO- irrelevant. I am by no means in favor of ceding sovreignty to world courts, but you won't find me making feverish claims about "one world government" or looking out the window for black helicopters."

---------------------------------
A Democratic League of Nations? Oh boy, no wonder why you support these Wilsonian Ideologues. How many votes do we get in your League of Nations? The rest of your argument makes no sense. What is your League of Nations going to be if you are against ceding sovereignty? You are against a World Court but how is your Democratic World Legislature going to enforce its decisions? Please explain.

And obviously I am against membership in the UN, ship them to Brussels.

JohnGalt
Re NSA wiretaps- Monitoring enemy communications into the country does not require warrants. The absence of warrants does not "enhance" the tap, but the neccessity of them hinders intelligence gathering. The gathering of enemy intelligence is the sole province of the executive branch; FISA laws are a blatantly unconstitutional power grab by the legislative and judicial branches and should be completely ignored by the President. Perhaps you agree with our friends the libs that our enemies should be given a "terrorist bill of rights" and extended the full rights of US citizens. I do not. I'm willing to risk the government tapping my phone if Al Qaeda agents start calling me; otherwise, I'm not worried.
-------------------------------------
You are just reciting talking points. Calling all strict constructionists:

"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

If a citizen inside the United States picks up a phone he has a constitutional right not to be searched unless a warrant has been issued. The Yoo argument is loose constructionism to the extreme. The Justice Department knew this. They first attempted to change FISA in congress and Congress told them it wouldn't pass. So they just started doing it and and they used the phony Yoo argument as their justification. Alberto Gonzales said it in his initial news conference. The quotes from the conference and the links to that conference can be found here:

http://spinfilter.blogspot.com/2007/05/amendment-iv-right-of-people-to-be.html

The rest of your argument is completely bogus. The Administration has never said why it is such a problem getting a warrant, you seriously cannot tell me that this government has no homeland security money if staffing is the problem. The main problem is they have never said why it "hinders" them. Besides the Constitution once again is the ultimate authority, you have to get warrants, no excuses. We have had many conflicts since the FISA law was enacted, it has stood for thirty years, only now do you hear a constitutional yelp, albeit from loose constructionists. Congress can pass laws, laws by nature restrict the Executive because the Executive enforces the laws of Congress, and then we go back to the fact that Alberto Gonzales acknowledged its Constitutionality when the Administration initially asked Congress to alter the law. And no, giving up the Bill of Rights is not something I am willing to do and the Administration is bound by oathe to abide by the Constitution, they did not, and people should be impeached. The immigration justification is also appropiate grounds for impeachment as well. More conservatives should advocate impeachment, because if what Clinton did was impeachable, and I definitely think it was, then what the Bush Administration has done with regard to the Constitution is impeachable as well. But partisans on both sides flip and flop as usual.

Debunked. More to come.

Mac, the worst thing
you could call me is a - gasp - liberal because liberals have no brain. As Clemenceau is credited with saying, "if you are not a liberal when you are young, you have no heart; but if you are not a conservative when you grow up, you have no brain."

And no, it is not a "complex" issue - it is really quite simple. We are either a nation of laws, or we are not. If we are, then we must enforce our laws - not reward those who deliberately and continuously break them.

If we are not, may God help us - because America will have morphed into AmeXica, yet one more third-rate, third-world country, where anarchy is the rule.

GWB
Re free trade - I am all for global free trade, Paul is not. I would welcome a world in which there were no tarrifs, quotas, non-tarrif barriers, import restrictions, government subsidies, etc. However, in order for there to be free trade, we must interact with other countries, thus trade agreements like GATT. Arms are twisted because Democrats and isolationist Republicans do not want these agreements--Dems because they are beholden to corrupt unions, isolationist Republicans out of economic ignorance and faux populism playing to an even more economically ignorant electorate. Paul would have us cripple our economy through isolationism while waiting for a theoretically perfect trade environment that will never materialize. Incidentally, who do you think engages in global trade other than multinational companies?

Re UN - An ineffective waste of time and money. I would favor the creation of a league of democratic nations. WTO- irrelevant. I am by no means in favor of ceding sovreignty to world courts, but you won't find me making feverish claims about "one world government" or looking out the window for black helicopters.

Re Al Qaeda in Iraq - It is you who is showing your ignorance. Even if Iraq does become a satellite of Iran if we withdraw now (a likely outcome), if you believe that they will not harbor and fund Al Qaeda, you are naiive. The same Islamic "experts" told us Saddam would never cooperate with Al Qaeda, which has been proven false (Lib talking points notwithstanding). Apparently someone has forgotten to tell Al Qaeda that Iraq is not the focal point in the war against Islamic fascism.

Re the Patriot Act - Which provisions do you specifically object to, and why? Which have limited your freedom in any way, or anyone you know, or anyone you have even heard of? Do you believe that we should re-construct Jaimie Gorlick's "wall" between the FBI, the CIA, police, etc. that the PA removed? Do you believe that by changing cell phones, terrorists should be allowed to avoid police? Should public libraries become a safe haven for terrorists to engage in safe communication? Why did no one have any objections to the provisions of the PA when they were previously applied to organized crime and drug traffickers, but go ballistic when applied to terrorists?

George W Bush/talent scout
Newt is not apart of the CFR - at least I don't remember ever seeing him on the list.

PJ
You sound like a liberal with your Mensa comment. Do you really think you are going to slience honest debate by your "I'm too smart to be even talking with you" condescending aire?

Yes Operation W-back was successful, but 1) the 50's were a different time you can no longer stop "Mexican looking" people and demand proof of citizenship be shown 2) just the sheer numbers today make this impossibe. Operation W-back worked on a fraction of the illegals we have today. Anyway as you said the justice department would never allow that to hapen again so why are you wasting your time on it? The goal should to stop more people from coming here, getting rid of the bad ones that are here illegally, and letting hard working immigrants stay.

I agree that employers, states & cities should be punished for not reporting illegals. However, if an illegal is working and contributing to society they should be allowed to stay. Are you and your Mensa buddies going to start taking part time jobs working on farms or in hotels as maids? If there are enough legals to do the jobs of illegals than a temporary workers program will solve this because jobs should be first rewarded to permanent legals.

The solution to illegals is not a one size fits all this is a complex issue. Another part is the U.S. is experiencing a major brain drain. We are not producing an employee base as scientists or engineers and as a result we are falling behind. We need to allow these people to stay in America and in fact encourage it if we are going to stay competitive.

Another thing is the reason that there are so many illegals is because it is almost impossible to become legal it takes nearly a decade! That is absurd. The process needs to be move more quickly and new rules should be put in place one that favor higher educated immigrants.

There is so much to this, PJ... just getting rid of all illegals is not going to solve the problem. Even if we could they will come back just like they did after Ike...they'll wait it out until another President gets in office and come back.

As soon
As I know who the democrats and the republicans choose to make the official run for President, I will know who NOT to vote for.

That is what I do know for sure.

I know it will not be Tom Tancredo, Duncan Hunter or Ron Paul or Newt Gingrich.

If this man Thompson belongs to the CFR I will not be voting in his favor and do not trust a word he says.

Is it a fact he is a CFR man?

apathy absence here
in spite of threats from some to stay home & boycott elections or cast token votes in anger/disappointment - methinks most of the folks here far too in tune with politics too be stay-homes or vote wasters; next thing you folks so disenchanted with Fred (or your non-choices) will be looking for entitlements or reparations cause you've been wronged...beware voter rage is coming & like liberalism it's a treatable mental disorder

Question for Liberty
Liberty,
Not knocking Rep. Paul, but is he electable in the primaries? If (when) he is not the Republican nominee, will you support whomever is voted in to run against any of the democrats, or will you give the dems a vote and write-in Rep. Paul?
Taproot

constructive in-fighting
rant & rave all you like folks about the merits of your "Conservative" standard bearer & the faults of all others...just remember, in spite of the agonizing disappointments of "w" - he remains the much lesser of the 2 evils compared to algore or fauntleroy kerry; once the "R" nominee is chosen, staying home & sulking instead of voting against the moonbats makes you a bloodless harry reid minion, "a loser"...for until the next Reagan comes along we may be voting often for the lesser of the evils, unless you choose surrender

If Bloomberg runs he will make Giulani look positively conservative! If Giulani can't win neither can Bloomberg. Ron Paul is a libertarian posing as republican that has absolutely no grasp of the War on Terror.

What infantiles....
I've heard that Fred T. used to take his mother with him to CFR meetings and would often stop and have a slice of apple pie on the way back home from the meetings. Newt would often join them and discuss ways to fool the American people while planning to take over the world. It's also rumored that Fred started out his life as a female before his transgendered operation went horribly wrong!

You 4 or 5 Paul Ron disciples in TH will go through the most absurd mental contortions to try to discredit anyone other than your savior! Could it be that you can't accept the fact that YOUR GUY ...has been a 5-times loser in presidential politics!

Bloomberg a threat?
You must be smoking some illegal stuff if you believe that Bloomberg has any chance of taking away the conservative vote from someone like a Fred Thompson!

As I recall, Bloomberg isn't thought of too highly in conservative circles. He's a feakin NY Republican (ie. Juliani-like, RHINO, liberal republican)

Speaking entirely for myself, he has abslutely no appeal. Add him to the list of the MSM favorite 'top three'.

RUN FRED RUN!

Soon please!

Yup, Mac - too deep
- like a cesspool - full of crap. Since I am a card-carrying member of Mensa, I figure I can respond cogently. How about if you try to capisce this response?

A. Did you read about Ike's response to the invasion of illegals? No? Well, the general instituted "Operation W-tback", rounded up the invaders, and shipped them back across the border. Looks like it CAN be done, if the Chamber of Commerce will only allow it.

B. There really is no need for the roundup. Simply have the Social Security Admin. work in collaboration with the IRS and with ICE. Employers who knowingly (and willfully blindly) hire illegal aliens will not only pay a hefty and painful fine, but will serve jail time based on the number of illegals they employ.

C. Sanctuary cities will forego ALL federal monies.

D. Sanctuary churches will lose their tax-exempt status.

E. Any state giving any kind of perks to illegals (in-state tuition, for example) will lose federal monies.

F. Bye, bye illegals - who will exit the same way they invaded. On their own two feet.

And "Duh", YES!!! A path to citizenship and "legality" is OF COURSE REWARDING BAD BEHAVIOR. HOW DUMB ARE YOU ANYWAY????

naleckid
Bobby Jindal may become a great governor for the state of Louisiana but how many people outside that state do you think have ever heard of him?

My ideal choice for the republican nomination would be Fred Thompson/J.C.Watts! Not only are they both strong conservatives but JC's youth in relationship to Fred's would help to give comfort to those that are concerned about Fred's continued good health should he be elected.

Kool Aid
Bromides. How can we disagree with Constitutional truisms and references to Biblical principles we deeply believe in? We cannot. But we can repudiate the messenger. His is a varied and variable history. His future should not include being part of any national Administration. He can flack for foreign governments; he can act for Hollywood and kibitz on line with setpiece pablum, he can preen himself before a host of venues, do scutwork for ABC and much more. But I don't buy his prune juicey nonsense, and don't want him as President, Vice-President, or any other officer of public service.

Run Fred Run
Thompson/Gingrich - as much as I like Newt, I agree he is just not viable in a general election; but the same goes for Tancredo, Hunter and Paul; all come with way to much baggage the left stream media will exploit in their frenzy to elect Clinton or Obama.
Fred Thompson/Bobby Jindal, now there is an untouchable ticket. Jindal is all set to become governor of Louisiana, no amount of Demo trickstery can stop that; but perhaps he could be persuaded.

Some Responses
Bible Thumper - you're not sure about Ron Paul's chances. I am. Zero.

George W Bush - "Interventionism isn't isolationism" - Paul claims to be for free global trade, yet opposes any and all mechanisms that enable it. Are GATT, NAFTA, CAFTA, etc perfect? No, but perfection is not possible. Even flawed trade agreements produce better economic outcomes than none.

Similarly, he claims to want to defeat Al Qaeda, but favors turning Iraq over to them as their future training ground, launching pad and source of funds. He claims to be strong on national defense, but favors eliminating tools like the Patriot Act and NSF surveillance of terrorists that are currently protecting us, based on imagined threats to our "civl liberties."

I applaud his stance on taxation and property rights, but let's face it--the guy's goofier than a s**t house rat and has no chance to secure even a respectable showing in the nomination process.

Evil Republican - I see no evidence that Libby lied about anything, only that his recollection of 2 year old conversations that he thought meaningless at the time, about non-crimes, differed from those of journalists whose own memory was proven to be faulty. He was railroaded in a Stalinesque show trial and convicted by a bunch of DC libs who openly stated they were out to get Cheney and Rove. He should be pardoned ASAP.

Bloomberg ready to Perot US
Perot used as verb...might as well mean garrotte for Conservatives; his 3rd party delusions likely seal the deal for a Shrillary victory...truly dreadful idea Bloomberg - you ought to reconsider the ramifications of this decision

The Evil Republican
The Evil Republican posted, "All "Scooter" had to do was tell the truth. How hard is that?"

Can YOU remember each and every conversation you have each and every day of your life verbatim? No, E.R., you can't.

To further claim that Libby "obstructed justice" by thwarting the FBI's investigation into what turned out to be no crime whatsoever is ludicrous.

What "law" did Libby "fail to observe"? The law that requires every person to have photographic memories?

If you are an attorney, you should be disbarred. Obviously, you consider Bill Clinton's perjury acceptable and his quibbling about "what 'is', is" legitimate testimony, but Libby's incorrect remembrance as felonious. Is that your idea of "equal justice"?

A perusal of the statutes and case law regarding testimony under oath would be worth your while.

Libby's conviction will be overturned. Maybe Fitzgerald's prosecution of a case in which he KNEW who leaked Plame's identity when he started, but still continued the prosecution into other areas, will be brought to light.

Maybe both you AND Fitzgerald should be brought before a grand jury. Then you can quote Justice Brandeis all day long to impress the jurors with your legal acumen.

Viable
I do not think that Gingrich is a viable general election candidate. I am saying that he is in a position to influence who gets the nomination. Thompson has support especially from the 20% who feel that Rudy, McCain and Romney are not good choices. However, that same 20 % also like Gingrich.

You do not see much shift in Rudy's currently reduced numbers or McCain's currently more robust numbers or in Romney's numbers if you take either Thompson or Gingrich out of the mix. It is obvious that Thompson and Gingrich are competing for the same block of votes for the most part. An active campaign by either or both will shift some votes, but there will also be adjustments by Rudy, McCain and Romney. In the national polls Rudy's numbers will settle down in the 20s, McCains numbers are in the 20s and should remain there inspite of Iraq, Romney's state numbers improve as he campaigns.

The other issue is the strenght of the GOTVs and that favors both McCain and Romney. It is one thing to get poll numbers, it is another to actually get votes out of the poll numbers. running a virtual campaign may help your poll numbers but it takes a GOTV to get people to vote in the primary.

When it is all done I see a brokered convention. Who knows what will happen in that but I am sure there will be a lot of upset supporters.

Fred Thompson Has My Vote
Go Fred!!!!!!!!!!

PJ
Perhaps my analogy was too deep for you - my plug up the hole in the boat first analogy means stop people from coming into the country illegally. Whether that be building a wall, a technological wall, increase man power, track down people who've overstayed their green card, etc. I am for it.

Anyway, I am still waiting for a solution from you...So you want to round up millions of people, find out where they came from, and then send them back. So how do you plan to do that exactly? I would really like to know. Are you going to have troops storm everyones home and demand that they show legal papers? Maybe you should vote for Janet Reno. :)

Even if you could find out every single illegal, how do you propose sending them back? By air, bus, make them walk back?

Don't you see how absurd this is? Why not a path to citizenship for those who can show a history of working, who have no criminal record, learning English, etc? Is that really rewarding bad behavior? There should be parole of sorts where people are kept track of and if they break the law or lose their job and don't find another one within a certain time they get sent back.

By the way many illegals here are not people who walked across the border a lot of them are people who came here with green cards from India, China, Turkey, etc. and are scientists or engineers who over stayed. We need such people to stay competitive and these people should be given a expeditated path to citizenship.

The bottom line is the entire system is broken. We need a new one, but a reasonable and practical one.

Bet
I, like you do not bet. However, there is one more wild card in the nomination and the general election.

The Left claim that Bloomberg is running and has set aside 1 billion of his own money for the race. If he gets in that sets up a much different political landscape in the general. I doubt if Rudy will get the nomination if it is clear that Bloomberg is running.

If as "Old Man" indicates that there is a shift toward Democratic leaning Indies, life could get very interesting with a 3rd and possibly 4th party.

On Thompson, a Gingrich entry will significanly decrease any delegates that Thompson could get with Gingrich out of it. Almost all of the polls show Gingrich and Thompson competing for the same voters. In some polls Thompson does have a little impact on current Rudy, McCain and Romney numbers.

However, the big fight, particularly in the South will be Gingrich and Thompson fighting over the same voters.

PJ
Your fore-drawn conclusions that Fred is in favor of amnesty and therefore unfit for your presidential vote is neither a fair or accurate depiction of his stance on the illegal immigration issue.

His approach to solving the illegal immigration issue (first....stop the leak) has a far better chance of being enacted by legislation and supported by the public at large than, I presume, your round them up and throw them out strategy. The 'leaking boat' analogy is a perfect one to describe the priority of Fred's approach.

In no way interpret my support of Fred's approach as an endorsement for amnesty, because I am totally and wholeheartedly against that proposition ...no matter what name anyone chooses to label it....such as a 'guest worker' program or any other 'sound-good' label.

Fred has unequivocally stated on numerous occasions his opposition to amnesty for illegal aliens and his belief that amnesty during the Regan years has proven to be a disastrous failure, as a policy.

My own emotional response may be close to yours on this issue but the practical and realist side of me can recognize the mature and reasoned approach which Fred champions!

Stop the leak...and dry up the tempting enticements first, and the problem may resolve itself to a large degree, especially as it relates to the future! I also don't think he is opposed to other measures of strengthening law enforcements role in addressing the problem.

Conspiracy theories abound.....
To BG:

Some Quotes from you:
"For better or worse, Gingrich is still in control of the party and the campaign."
"Thompson will siphon off enough delegates from Rudy in the South to keep McCain close in the delegate count. That is Thompson's primary purpose for running."
"Gingrich still controls the destiny of this party and election."
"Both Thompson and Gingrich know that they will not get the nomination..."

It must be nice to poses such clairvoyance!

On your last 'prediction'......Want to make a little bet about Fred winning the nomination if he decides to run for the republican presidential nominee? I'm not a betting man...but I'm willing to give you 3-to-1 odds on that tin-foil-hat prediction!

Why did I use 'tin-foil-hat' as an adjective? Maybe it's the conspiracy theory tone to your posts!

To Liberty:

Please....pleeeeeeease! Give the Ron Paul worship and Fred/CFR connection a rest! It really is getting old. I'd venture to guess that only about 1% of the TH readers continue reading through your long-winded diatribes once you start with either of those 'talking points'....sort of the same 1% that have voted for Ron Paul in his previous presidential bids. Try reversing the layers of tin foil, shiney side down. I've heard that it increases reception!

Activist Courts
Activists courts and prosecutors have been with us from the beginning. Marshall was determined to strengthen the central government and used the court to do so. Talking only about the church and state would not even remotely deal with the issues that were long ago decided. The Federal government has acquired most of the powers of the states, making the Republic a shadow of what the founders intended. We invent welfare clauses to justify entitlement programs, federalize education, and justify unfunded mandates that force the states, who today collect only $1 for every $6 collected by the central government, to spend much of that $1 as directed by the central government. We allow federal agencies to with-hold funds if the states refuse to follow administrative rules even though they could never enforce those rules in the courts. But the courts still let them use the money to blackmail the states. The list is endless.

We will never go back to the consitution or the Declaration of Independence in the way suggested, it's far too late.

Ron Paul is known
He must be known or he wouldn't have won the first debate's polls after it. They may not have known of him before the debate but did after it.

Tonight's debate, however, will be more telling. The other candidates know how well he did and will be prepared, possibly, to refute some of his stance on the war.

However, I think that you are misjudging his power with independents. Republicans no longer elect their candidates. Independents do.
quote:
Over the past five years, the political landscape of the nation has shifted from one of partisan parity to a sizable Democratic advantage. But the change reflects Republican losses more than Democratic gains. Compared with 2002, Democratic Party identification is up just two points (from 31% to 33%) and has not grown at all since 2004. Republican Party identification, meanwhile, has fallen precipitously, from 29% as recently as 2005 to just 25% in the first quarter of 2007.

The shift that favors the Democratic
Party is among independents. The share of Americans who describe themselves as independents who “lean” toward the Democratic Party has gradually risen from 12% in 2002 to 17% in the first quarter of 2007. Meanwhile, the share leaning toward the GOP has dropped, but only slightly (from 13% to 11%). But the survey suggests that even these Democratic gains reflect independents’ dissatisfaction with the Republican Party more than any greater liking for the Democrats.

=========================
That Pew Research Report shows how much ground Republicans have lost. Then add that 78 million voters stay home and many of them are conservatives that are fed up with both parties, and it becomes worse.

Ron Paul's libertarian stance is OK for the Federal Government since it was supposed to be secular, limited, and leave most issues to states.

As pointed out, the war and troop policies will be the most divisive issue with Paul. However, he is "Constitutional" and in keeping with the Founders when he says bring the troops home. Read what Washington said about foreign entanglements and commerce in his Farewell Address.

quote:
Against the insidious wiles of foreign influence (I conjure you to believe me, fellow-citizens) the jealousy of a free people ought to be constantly awake, since history and experience prove that foreign influence is one of the most baneful foes of republican government. But that jealousy to be useful must be impartial; else it becomes the instrument of the very influence to be avoided, instead of a defense against it. Excessive partiality for one foreign nation and excessive dislike of another cause those whom they actuate to see danger only on one side, and serve to veil and even second the arts of influence on the other. Real patriots who may resist the intrigues of the favorite are liable to become suspected and odious, while its tools and dupes usurp the applause and confidence of the people, to surrender their interests.
=====================

While we can't take back past decisions, we can seek a course where we remove ourselves from actions that while befriending one, creates many enemies and enemies that we depend on for our trade. We shouldn't be isolationists but, when we do go to war, it should be all out, no holds barred war and then when done, set the terms, provide some aid but don't become a "nanny."

While I don't think that Paul or Washington's views, for that matter, are that popular today, they are founded in the principles this nation was based on.

We have a nation of voters that want "nanny" government. 52% now get some type of federal funds. Don't look for that to change with most of the candidates.

Machiavelli misstates -
or misrepresents. I am hardly "ideological". What I AM is truly ticked off that so many politicians are ready to put the lie to "a nation of laws". When you reward bad behavior, you simply get more of it - ask any parent or teacher. And to reward the invasion of illegal aliens with "a path to citizenship" is just such a reward.

So, Mr. Mac, are you ready to see an even greater tsunami of illegal aliens? Because that is precisely what will happen when Fred grants amnesty.

Insisting that the laws be applied is hardly blind ideology. It is, in fact, AMERICAN! So, dear Mac, if your guy is the Repub candidate, my family will either be sitting the election out or voting third party. But NO WAY will be be part of the transformation of America into AmeXica.

Good Speech
I hope he competes--he will bring important discussion to the fray.

First Principle
No benifit shall be allowed to accrue from an illegal act. This applies to illegal immigration as well as any other legal transaction.

Broke and Brokered
For better or worse, Gingrich is still in control of the party and the campaign.

McCain cannot hold down Rudy's total delegate count down enought. If you go over each state and the proportion of delegates each candidate is likely to recieve, it is clear that Rudy will probably not win outright but will have a large body of delegates, even as a pro choice candidate.

McCain needs someone like Thompson in the race to be viable (particularly with so many proportional primary states). Thompson is a stalking horse for McCain. Thompson reaches and gets conservatives that McCain cannot reach. Thompson will siphon off enough delegates from Rudy in the South to keep McCain close in the delegate count. That is Thompson's primary purpose for running. It creates a hidden unholy alliance and gives McCain a block of conservative delegates at a brokered convention. This is why the Vagas odds on McCain shot up 10 points last week making him the front runner.

Gingrich may run if for no other reason than to block the McCain/Thompson alliance. Gingrich will deny Thompson Southern delegates and create his own block that can be used in a brokered convention.

Gingrich still controls the destiny of this party and election. He cannot and will not win but he can effect the outcome.

Why I support Fred Thompson
As someone who is more libertarian than the Republican party, it's often difficult to find someone running for federal office who seem to understand our Constitution and founding principles well enough to justify supporting that person's candidacy.

Of course I love most of Ron Paul's positions, though I'm not quite the isolationist he is.

But the bottom line is that Dr. Paul can't win. So the question becomes "Who can win who actually supports liberty, federalism, and limited government?"

It seems clear to me that Fred Thompson is the best choice. I don't believe that Romney truly knows what he believes. I like Rudy but have been quite unimpressed with his ability to handle the abortion question lately, and I wonder about whether he would be too inclined toward increasing executive power the way our current President has. Gingrich is very smart and has excellent positions on most issues but probably is too divisive and has too much baggage to win.

Fred Thompson, as silly as it might sound (or maybe it doesn't sound silly), has a real advantage in being an actor because it allows him to imply, if not explicitly claim, a Ronald Reagan-like mantle...in addition to his positions being closer to Reagan's than any of the current front-runners.

I would very much like to hear Thompson make a more aggressive repudiation of the McCain-Feingold Incumbent Protection Act (and apologize for supporting it to begin with.) That is the only major flaw I've found in his voting record.

Nobody is perfect, and the libertarians among us might wish for a government run by people like Ron Paul. But part of the problem with the capital-L Libertarian Party is that they are so ideological that even though they are generally right they are completely ineffective on a national scale.

Given the realities of who can put together a winning campaign and who can't, I believe those of us who consider ourselves lovers of liberty should support Fred Thompson...even while donating to Ron Paul's campaign so he can keep pushing a message of freedom and force other Republicans to move in that way, just as leftist Democrats and left-leaning 527s move the Democrat candidates away from liberty.

Power Brokers
Both Thompson and Gingrich know that they will not get the nomination, nor will they win enough delegates to win the nomination.

However, they have everything to gain and little to lose by flirting for the nomination.

Further, and most important, they can create a brokered convention where they become important power brokers.

The Republican party is in for a long bitter primary. There is a good chance the nomination will be worthless by the time it is decided.

Wrong Again Fred
Governments are established to protect our rights, not to grant them. The word you were looking for is privileges, and that you got it wrong is reason for serious concern about what kind of president you would make.

machiavelli
Liberty has no response to that. As conservative as Dr. Paul is, he is an isolationist and that just won't wash in today's world. Maybe in the 1908 election cycle, but not in the 2008 election. He is also saddled with a non-identity, no-one outside of his district, the beltway (and not many of those) and here at TH does anyone know Dr. Paul from Mrs. Paul (fish sticks).

Run when you can Fred, keep up the commons sense and return our great country to what the founders envisioned and not the current mamby-pamby welfare state that it has been twisted into by years of failed liberal policies.

Liberty - keep banging your drum
Your relentless & passionate Ron Paul cheerleading is commendable...the viability of Paul, Tancredo or Hunter as electable POTUS candidates is in the noise (at this point)...i believe Hunter carries some potential as a VP candidate, but these others while carrying solid credentials will need some breakthrough event to project them into top tier consideration...my focus this evening (for debate) was to be on the 3 candidates you mentioned, additionally these gents might deserve (earn) some thorough background checking also; finally, Fred needs to open up & talk straight & soon to skeptical Conservatives, detailing his current CFR positions in upcoming columns. Get to it Fred...this seems to be your achilles heel!

Words are cheap...look at ACTIONS
Remember Bush ran on a humble foreign policy.

Fred Thompson
Fred T. wants America to dance with who brung her, the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution.

Sounds good to me.

When he gets even a small chance to do so, I'm sure he'd love to. Right now, there is a media blackout on Dr. Paul. There are a LOT of people around America who are trying to get this remedied.

Dr. Paul is not weak on defense; he is very strong. He thinks we would actually increase our national security much more by securing OUR OWN ports and borders, as opposed to using our military to carry out UN sanctions. Amazing thing, isn't it?

"Ron Paul is one of the outstanding leaders fighting for a stronger national defense...We need to keep him fighting for our country" -- Ronald Reagan

Pirate
Yes I had thought all along that he was waiting until the end of the L&O season...this is May sweeps after all. He will run and probably will announce in early to mid June. Plus why would he reveal he had Lymphoma if he wasn't going to run? There would be no need to do.

Also I wouldn't be surprised if Newt announces earlier than this Fall. Fred is going to take a lot of support away from Newt and he's alarmed he will lose his window of opportunity if he waits until after Labor day like he said he would.

Liberty
Ron Paul is viewed as weak on defense. He wants to pull troops out of the "130 countries" we have troops in. All he talks about is how he is not for and was never for the war in Iraq.

Well regardless we are there now. So what does he plan to do about it? Dr. Paul needs to put forth a plan for Iraq and a plan for fighting terrorists or he will have no chance at winning. He is actually in a great position to do this because he can go to the American people and say, "I was never for this war I did not vote for it and based on my record you can be assured I will never let America get involved in such a war as President, but now we are in Iraq and this is what I plan to do about it...."

What say you?

Fred has quit his day job..
It has come out that he is off L&O for next year.

Wanna bet that he has a promise - either written contractual clause or verbal - that he wouldn't run for President until the end of the L&O season? And that he is honoring it?

Be careful -- Fred and the CFR
Be careful. Remember that Fred is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, whose president openly states that the U.S. should give up its sovereignty to a world governing body.

Why would Fred belong to such a group?

Barry Goldwater warned us about the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR)in his book, With No Apologies.

"In the Bible story of David and Goliath we are told that David’s brothers, who were older and bigger than he, ordered David to stay home while they went into the valley to confront the enemy. When David joined them a day or so later, they rebuked him. He replied with a question: “Is there not a cause?”

To my mind there is a cause. That cause is freedom. We stand in danger of losing that freedom- not to a foreign tyrant, but to those well intentioned but misguided elitist utopians who stubbornly refuse to profit from errors of the past.

If I am right, if the Republic is in danger, then time is short. I must take this opportunity to share what I have seen and experienced as a member of the U.S. Senate, as my party’s nominee for the presidency, as a man whose only aspiration has been to serve the cause of freedom.

If I am wrong, time will display my error and reprimand me. If what I say strikes a response in the hearts and minds of other Americans, perhaps they will enlist in the cause to keep our country strong and to restrain those who seek to diminish the importance and significance of the individual. (Page 14)

The Nonelected Rulers

I believe the Council on Foreign Relations and its ancillary elitist groups are indifferent to communism. They have no ideological anchors. In their pursuit of a new world order they are prepared to deal without prejudice with a communist state, a socialist state, a democratic state, monarchy, oligarchy—it’s all the same to them.

Rear Admiral Chester Ward, USN (Retd.), who was a member of the CFR for sixteen years, has written, “The most powerful clique in these elitist groups have one objective in common—they want to bring about the surrender of the sovereignty and the national independence of the United States.” Their goal is to impose a benign stability on the quarreling family of nations through the merger and consolidation. They see the elimination of national boundaries, the suppression of racial and ethnic loyalties as the most expeditious avenue to world peace. Their rationale rests exclusively on materialism. They believe economic competition is the root cause of international tension. This approach dismisses as insignificant the form of government or the political ideology expressed by that form.

It may be that if the CFR vision of the future could be realized, there would be a reduction in wars, a lessening of poverty, a more efficient utilization of the world’s resources. To my mind, this would inevitably be accompanied by a loss of personal freedom of choice and the reestablishment of the restraints which provoked the American Revolution."

Great article
It's so nice to see a politician with a strong backbone! Go Fred!!
No Fear!!

Ga
It's very easy actually. There are only 3 remotely conservative candidates in the race.

Ron Paul
Tom Tancredo
Duncan Hunter

All the rest are BIG government socialists that are indistinguishable from those in the Democratic party.

Of course, I am voting for Ron Paul, because he is conservative through and through and has a proven voting record to back that up.

"The greatest champion of conservative principles we have seen in Congress in the past quarter century." -- David T. Pyne, Esq., Vice President of the National Federation of Republican Assemblies

Newt the albatross
Tragically one of the most able, qualified & articulate conservatives (Newt) is a "branded" contaminated presence...on his own or as VP material; he'll drive moderates off in masses, in spite of his recent startling moonbat global warming positions. It appears there's plenty of high quality VP candidates out there in our 2nd tier...i'd throw in Watts, Michael Steele, George Allen, & Santorum also. Identifying the strongest Conservative that WILL WIN the POTUS is the tough mission.

FOWG, photogbill, PJ
Paul could never be on a ticket with a real conservative because of his stance on the Iraq war.

photogbill - I agree with you on Newt. Before Fred said he may run I was completely with Newt, but that was before his assertion on man-made global warming. Also I've learned how this isn't the first time Newt has acted star-struck in front of a Liberal. Of course we have to wait until we hear from Fred on all of the issues. I still don't know where he stands on the so called man-made global warming BS.

PJ - you can get ideological about immigration all you want, but unless you're prepared to use God knows how much resources to round up millions of people and send them back to wherever they came from ideals should just stay ideals. Fred is right here. If you have a leaky boat the first thing you do is plug up the leak not siffing the water out because you're boat is going to fill up with water as fast as you're trying to get it out. After you fix the open border you can then deal with the illegals that are here. First, we need to implement laws that already on the books. If an illegal is doing something illegal they should be deported. If they've been working here and contributing to society they should be put on a path to citizenship with stipulations such as learning English, keeping a job, etc.

Ditto Photogbill
As much as we respect Newt, he would hurt the ticket more than help. Women will never forgive him for his divorce of ill wife. Another conservative - perhaps younger (looking to the future) as VP. How about J. C. Watts?

I don't get it (well, perhaps I do)
Why is it that those people who abuse power entrusted to them - special prosecutors, etc. - never have to answer for those abuses? There must be some sort of retribution for cavalier actions which ruin peoples lives and waste vast amounts of money, and taxpayer paid time. The stench of Washington is getting to be pretty near overwhelming.

another fine offering
Much appreciate your columns here and the variety of topic - will be closely studying the 2nd tier candidates at tonights debate...as mentioned by others, strong positions on deporting illegal immigrants & border security will factor heavily into securing my primary vote. In line with your theme of the day, it is imperative a Conservative win the white house in 08 to guarantee the "right" replacement of Stevens.

Mr. Thompson, please run.
.

Not much...
to say here...that was the kind of speech I like to hear. Two Guides...the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. Oh, yeah! we have inherited something so great, and my optimism is that Fred will run!!! Go over to my blog and read the about the fields of the Brave...

Forget about it, Fred -
- there's no way that you are getting MY family's votes (and we have a BIG family):

from politico.com

The Law & Order star hit the right button with the Southern California audience by saying “border security” must be the first priority in reforming immigration.

But he also made clear that he would tack closer to the middle on the issue by adding that “the 12 million [illegal immigrants] here aren’t as much as a concern as the next 12 million after that.” TRANSLATION: AMNESTY! AND THAT'S A DEAL-BREAKER FOR US!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The first line – border security – won immediate head nods, murmurs of “m-hmm,” and applause. His downplaying of the status of the illegal immigrants in the country now drew silence. TRANSLATION: THEY WERE AS UNHAPPY WITH FRED'S GRANTING AMNESTY AS WE ARE!!

So with Fred it will be Goodbye, America and Hola, AmeXica.

No Newts...
As much as it pains me to say this, I don't think a Fred/Newt presidential ticket would be a good idea.

Fred for president....Absolutely!!!...but with some other 'real' conservative for VP! I just don't think that Newt would boost the republican chances for a presidential win ....and there is a very real probability it could hurt those chances.

Before I elaborate, I want to be clear that I generally like and think very highly of Newt. I think he is highly intelligent, articulate, and politically savvy. I think he might even make for a good president, although I have strong and new-found misgivings about his judgement after his recent declarations of support for the ludicrous 'theory' that man-made CO2 emissions contribute to an 'alleged' global warming. I can only hope it was a serious brain-phart on his part due to a complete ignorance of the real facts of the global warming hoax!

The main reason I would be against a Fred/Newt ticket is that Newt simply has been too thoroughly vilified by the MSM to have anything but a negative impact on a republican presidential ticket. The prevailing opinions about Newt may not be either fair or justified....but they are a reality. Newt would be a major target for the MSM and their comrades on the far left, and so by default, he would take attention away from Fred. That would be a major catastrophe, IMO. As so many of his recent speeches, interviews, and writings have proven, the more people get 'to know' Fred...the more people will like him and trust his judgements to run this great nation....and hopefully for some of us....turn this country back in a positive direction based on his strong convictions on the founding principles and precepts that began with our founding forefathers.

Fred also appears to have a level of wisdom and common sense approach to issues that have been sorely lacking in our elected 'leaders' for longer than I care to admit. He also does not appear to be afflicted with a naivete about his political adversaries, unlike our current president.

This last observation will make Fred far less likely to 'try to get along' with the democrats, at the expense of conservative principles!

FDT
How about Thompson/Paul?

The thing that struck me about this column is it sounds a lot like patriotism. I havn't seen or heard a patriot for a long time.

I've been misled by politicians in the past and have some reservation about Mr. Thompson only because I've lost faith in those who want political positions. They usually want to promote an unseen agenda and we get stuck with another phoney.

I truly hope he is real!!!

The only "crime"libby committed was serving his country with dignity.Liberals hate that, because that concept is very alien to them.

When the democraps commit real crimes, they get promoted to prominent positions(william"the fridge jefferson")and or sighn multi-million dollar book deals(joe wilson).

BTW,Fred/Newt in 08' sounds good.

Fred's Rope-A-Dope Approach
I'll be writing soon on my popular blog (click on name above) about Fred Thompson's campaign strategy, which is fascinating to watch. In a way, it's a rope-a-dope (remember Muhammed Ali) approach, one where he bobs and weaves, causing his opponents to wear themselves out while ole Fred sits in his briar patch. Yeah, the metaphor is mixed, but so is the strategy. It's a variation on the Eisenhower approach, where he stayed out of the fray until he received "the call." I'm not endorsing Fred, but I'm getting more and more impressed by his reading of the political terrain.

How 'bout Fred-Newt 08?
Great article...poor Scooter Libby found guilty of covering up a non-crime. What a joke! The only one that should be facing jail time in this mess is Joe Wilson for lieing to the Senate Intelligence Committee.

China~immigration, somebody tell Hugh, K
Somebody tell Hugh Hewitt, Larry Kudlow, and the other out there defending anti liberty they are wrong - please! Lady Laura [Ingraham] stands up to the immigration and free tread stupidity - but not many others. A slave is a slave anywhere - no matter where

We need to stand for our ideals - as FRED DOES

As Thomas Jefferson said, "Standing up to tyranny is obedience to God"

we must remember it! Stand up for our liberty - system of justice - THE LAW above the tyrant, etc. NOT go in for watering down or doing away with it. It's like When they [these guys] defend Romney... my lawyer is a great Mormom- he can defend me in court [if need be] but I would not want someone so deluded as president. I'm sorry but we need stand up for truth.. our Christian God against the religions that started in a cave with an epileptic siezure and an angel of light -- the warnings about all that and adding to the [Good] Book are real!

Great speech!!
I might be willing to vote for him, but his hollyweird background concerns me. Bush also talked well during his first campaign and we know how that has gone! I need to study this more.
I think Ron Paul would be good, but I'm not sure of his chances. Time will tell.

Make it real Senator Thompson. Thompson/Tancredo. Thompson/Hunter. This country needs a plain speaker who is not interested in selling us out to global interests (sorry George, your underwear is showing).

Truth
Truth and hope. Just what America needs. Run and
you will get elected and then YOU can name TWO
more judges like Roberts and Alito. I am with
you all the way.

How refreshing!
When was the last time we heard a sitting politician speak like that? President Bush should be ashamed of himself for throwing Scooter under the bus, as he should be ashamed for not pardoning the Border Agents.

What a great day for American it would be to have a "man" back in the White House. It's been a long time.

Super Column Fred!
As are all your writings. You've got my vote!

You've got my vote
Mr. Thompson your words mark you as a leader not a follower. I admire candidates that declare their principles and then stand firm rather than those that change direction as quickly as the polls, lighthouses not rowboats tossed by the sea of opinion.

Great column Mr. Thompson
I pray we all rededicate our words, and actions, to those founding principles. Together we defeat those trying to defeat America. Defeatist from without, and within, face a formidable opponent armed with the principle truths of this Republic. Principles that created a great nation has those holding, and sharing those principles carried it forward. Americans, and America, needs a strong dose of founding principles. Lets all be together, and give it to them. Thank-you Mr. Thompson for your leadership.

The Council for National Policy
are serious red meat eaters, some of their members having developed the Reagan Doctrine and all. While I applaud Fred Thompson's positions on the use and abuse of the rule of law, as most THers probably do, I wonder if this think tank was sufficiently roused to back a Thompson candidacy.

I am hoping we get a chance to find out.

Fred, the President.

"Dangerous" Dave
You're funny.

Dittos for me
Absolutely. Terrific column.

Fred:
The time will soon come for you to throw your hat in the ring, and I will be spending my evenings and weekends volunteering on your behalf when you are nominated.

For the rest, I don't see Thompsn as the lesser of any evils. He will be the first national candidate in a long time that I will vote for, not against their opponent.

Fred's record isn't perfect, but neither was Abe Lincoln's or Ronald Reagan's.... and I don't expect conservative voters to throw him under the bus Lieberman style because he isn't perfect.

Until the nomination comes, my lawn and bumper are blank canvases....

the magnificent legacy...

‘We must rededicate ourselves…to the magnificent legacy we have been given. And I am honored to join you in this effort.’ – Fred Thompson

Mr. Thompson, your words on first principles are words that Americans long to hear again. It’s been too long. We would be honored to join you in this effort. Regards.

Good Article Fred
