Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

You might have read the stories about filmmaker Michael Moore taking ailing workers from Ground Zero in Manhattan to Cuba for free medical treatments. According to reports, he filmed the trip for a new movie that bashes America for not having government-provided health care.

Now, I have no expectation that Moore is going to tell the truth about Cuba or health care. I defend his right to do what he does, but Moore's talent for clever falsehoods has been too well documented. Simply calling his movies documentaries rather than works of fiction, I think, may be the biggest fiction of all.

While this PR stunt has obviously been successful -- here I am talking about it -- Moore's a piker compared to Fidel Castro and his regime. Moore just parrots the story they created -- one of the most successful public relations coups in history. This is the story of free, high quality Cuban health care.

The truth is that Cuban medical care has never recovered from Castro's takeover -- when the country’s health care ranked among the world's best. He won the support of the Cuban people by promising to replace Batista’s dictatorship with free elections, and to end corruption. Once in power, though, he made himself dictator and instituted Soviet-style Communism. Cubans not only failed to regain their democratic rights, their economy plunged into centrally planned poverty.

As many as half of Cuba's doctors fled almost immediately -- and defections continue to this day. Castro won't allow observers in to monitor his nation's true state, but defectors tell us that many Cubans live with permanent malnutrition and long waits for even basic medical services. Many treatments we take for granted aren't available at all -- except to the Communist elite or foreigners with dollars.

For them, Castro keeps "show" clinics equipped with the best medicines and technologies available. It was almost certainly one of these that Moore went to, if the stories in the NY Post and The Daily News are true.

Nothing about this story inspires doubt, though. Elements in Hollywood have been infatuated with the Cuban commander for years. It always leaves me shaking my head when I read about some big-time actor or director going to Cuba and gushing all over Castro. And, regular as rain, they bring up the health care myth when they come home.

What is it that leads people to value theoretically "free" health care, even when it's lousy or nonexistent, over a free society that actually delivers health care? You might have to deal with creditors after you go to the emergency ward in America, but no one is denied medical care here. I guarantee even the poorest Americans are getting far better medical services than many Cubans.

According to Forbes magazine, by the way, Castro is now personally worth approximately $900 million. So when he desperately needed medical treatment recently, he could afford to fly a Spanish surgeon, with equipment, on a chartered jet to Cuba. What does that say about free Cuban health care?

The other thing that irks me about Moore and his cohort in Hollywood is their complete lack of sympathy for fellow artists persecuted for opposing the Castro regime. Pro-democracy activists are routinely threatened and imprisoned, but Castro remains a hero to many here. According to human rights organizations, these prisoners of conscience are often beaten and denied medical treatment, sanitation or even adequate nutrition.

If Moore wants a subject for a real documentary, I would suggest looking into the life of Cuban painter and award-winning documentarian Nicolás Guillén Landrián. He was denied the right to practice his art for using the Beatles' song, "The Fool on the Hill," as background music behind footage of Castro climbing a mountain. Later, he was given plenty of free Cuban health care when he was confined for years in a "mental institution" and given devastating, repeated electroshock "treatments."

There are many other artists and activists who have enjoyed similar treatment. I suspect we'll see movies with sympathetic portrayals of terrorists held in Guantanamo before we ever hear about the torture of true Cuban heroes. Even Andy Garcia's brilliant fictionalized movie about the real Cuban experience, "The Lost City," was given the Hollywood silent treatment. My bet, though, is that we'll hear lots about how Michael Moore showed that Cuba's socialized medicine is better than ours.

So go ahead and start working on the Oscar speech, Michael.

Moore
Michael Moore is just an apologist for Castro as Leni Reifenstahl was an apologist for Hitler.

I got it
Michael Moore is gasbag. That has been established as a fact to all but the Leftist idol worshipers. Yet even ALgore is trying to produce "movies" to promote their "careers".

So again today we have another perspective of Fred Thompson's thinking and view on politics. Free of charge and free of expense to him as well.

I watched Fred on Hannity and Colmes last evening and thought this guy is well grounded and able to see the big picture. That was not a surprise.

Now I expect a few posters will complain that he has not declared his bid for president yet. Some like Dick Morris may claim he is loosing ground by doing this. I'm not so sure of that.

Other than political junkies (us) who cares about an election at the end of 2008? Not many. For now I'm content with these viewpoints coming out virtually daily from Thompson. He is campaigning his way and is getting a buzz doing it.

Too bad Cuba is rotting in it's own swill. Good thing that America can still avoid the same level of leadership by electing Conservatives. Note I did not say Republicans.

Handy: Your attack on Thompson
is based on exactly what, other than pure speculation on your part?

You have any facts to back it up?

Or are you just another liberal gasbag?

Handy, oh boy
"Let me be the first to denounce it."

In fact, on this forum, you have been denouncing Fred for a few days? weeks?

Okay, fine. You think Thompson has a "ghost writer" sending up "balloons". That is your opinion and you have not been shy about promoting it.

So I'd like to ask, since FT has been signing his name to each of these articles, do you not think he will be called on to defend these positions? How can he possibly say somebody else wrote them and he never had a hand in it? The guy would end up with the credibility of death row inmate.

As time unfolds Thompson will have to answer for these opinions. If it is baloney we will find out before this Fall. "if he'll allow a bunch of marginally articulate lackeys to pen his essays" you can crow about it, when it happens, and if he runs.

In the mean time I'm keeping my pom-poms dry, my skirts pleated and dream. Just like you appear to be doing because you can only field an opinion and no proof, or any proof you have shared here.

Please share with us why the ideas expressed by Thompson are so repellant to you?

If More, Gore
And Hitlery are allowed to have their way they would install a Castro type regeme replete with universal health care. Now that's something to look foreward to.

Run Fred Run!!!

Handy
Fred Thompson got you scared eh!? So as a typical Liberal Moonbat you throw out a lot of crap to discredit him.

I, and I'm sure every conservative, demand you show proof of your accusations! If you can't or won't, you'll be exposed and branded as just another Dammed Liberal liar! Which I think you are!

Handy
I guess you feel that all the Lib candidates write there own speeches. They must be brillant in your delusional mind.

Handy
Call me delusional or whatever you want to.
I would love to see Fred Thompson and D.Hunter
team up and wipe away all the liberals and RINOS
now running for both parties.

Handy has a lot to learn
Handy wrote: "Just this past week we learned that Reagan kept a personal diary, and that he wrote many of his own speeches."

Like most in this blog, I have known these facts about Regan for many years. There are books about this. Any serious writing about Regan features this.

Considering the rest of his post, this hole in Handy's knowledge base is not surprising.

Watching Thompson
his writings sound just like he speaks so it sounds legit to me that he writes his own articles.

For more on Moore and films visit my blog and find out about his latest film in Juliet's Diary.

pineknot
I would definitely get out my pom-poms for a Thompson/Hunter ticket!

Poor Handy
is a member of Generation Whine and I guess his secretary (or his electronic teddy bear) hasn't had time to read him the last three years worth of material written by Mr. Reagan that has appeared in the course of mourning his passing.

As for "free" health care, I invite Mr. Moore to come up here as an ordinary Fat Boy and attempt as an ordinary Kanukistanian, to get surgery and help for his 'condition". Recently there was a story in our local paper (The Toronto Sun) about a 500 lb. man who had been trying for many years to get 'help' for his morbid obesity, and he finally received a letter from the "Free" health care system saying he was now going to be evaluated. Unfortunately it arrived a week after he died.

Health Care in Kanukistan is based on the belief that if you extent the wait times long enough, most people will either go to the States for medical care at their own expense, or will die, before you have to treat them. Just come up here with a video camera and spend 12 hours in the emergency room of the best hospital in Toronto (and there are good hospitals here) on any summer day. As a really good analogy, imagine yourself at the end of the line-up at the post office two weeks before Christmas -- and then imagine yourself at the end of that line with a sick baby. That's "Free" health care.

Hmmm
Handy:

I have carefully read everything Fred has written here and I can see no evidence that would support your conclusion that it is "obvious" that Fred did not write this. Please share with me your wisdom, and point out to me what you see in them that makes it so obvious to you.

Also IMHO, simply because the man did not write the article does not mean that he does not believe every word in it. In the final analysis, his NAME is on the article and he will forever be associated with it. Again, people are different, some are talented writers, some are talented speakers, some are talented at both. If you want to get your position out then you make use of your own talents and augment them with talents that others have.

A President, like any head of a large organization can not do everything personally, he MUST delegate much of it to others. But no matter what he delegates or to whom he delegates it the one thing he can not delegate is the accountability for what ever is done or for what ever the out come may be. He can give a tremendous amount of responsibility and authority to others but he is always accountable for what they do and what the outcome is. In my career in the Navy, as an officer, I was taught early on that if the ship runs aground its the Captain who is held accountable, even if he were not at the helm, did not have the Con, or in bed getting some rest. Its HIS fault period. So even if Fred delegated the writing of his column HE is the one accountable for what it says and what ever out come it may have. What is wrong with that?

Handy
I believe that Madam Hitlary utilized a ghost writer for her jumbled of dogsqueeze and Velcro-Fly Bubba was also aided by someone who could spell when he crapped out "My Lies."

ALL HANDS!
Swoop into my blog (click on my name) and check today's article on "The Liberal Mind-Confused Chaos."

A lot of research (that's reading other sources for you liberals out there) went into it. A little long but HEY! when you're trying to cure mentally ill people like liberals, you gotta give it 110%!

Cuban Health Care
Cuban health care has nothing to do with health care in the U.S. A better comparison would be other major industrialized countries, where the statistics show that health care costs less and is superior to U.S. health care. The results are better because all citizens have access to health care and because there is greater emphasis on preventive care. And the cost is much lower because parasitic for-profit health insurance companies aren't creating one-third of the costs and creating an administrative nightmare for doctors and hospitals.

Michael Moore
Thompson is right that nobody ever accused Michael Moore of objectivity. He doesn't produce documentaries. He is a skilled propagandist and a bit of a comedian.

Big Arch
Not to plug my blog TOO MUCH but check out the article I posted today on how twisted their minds are.

I'm of the group that thinks some of these liberals are salvagable as humans but if not, jerubaal can always trap em and hold them until the next VRWC BBQ!

I'm sure that Duncan Hunter...
...would be any Republican candidates' first choice for Vice-President.It would insure the Democrats would not try to impeach the Republican president.

Problem w/ those on the left
Is that they would rather believe the delusions of communism/socialism than have to admit they don't work. There is a reason people are fleeing communist countries. If Handy doesn't agree w/ Thompson's article, then prove him wrong or debate the issue. Otherwise, what's the point of baseless accusations? I guess that means they don't have a reasonable argument.

W2--hate the form love the comment
My father works in the insurance business...he couldn't agree more. But its more than insurance companies. The state governments have mandated certain coverages, thus causing insurance companies to charge higher premiums. But, those policies are based on treatment-medicine over preventative medicine: any policy that provides payments for physicals or well-checkups is hard to come by...you'd think insurance would want to pay for the less expensive check-ups rather than the expensive treatments...

Handy didn't even read the article
It does not matter what Fred said, as the moonbat goes apoplectic whenever reason a facts are introduced by someone with character. Oh, that's right, they are used to listening to Dimmocraps that have no character.

Fred, Keep the common sense coming and go ahead and declare so you can join the debates and demonstrate that you are far superior to the other GOPers, especially the "front three"!

W2
You think socialized medicine is GOOD in Canada and Britain? Think again. When you take the incentive (better pay) for being a good doctor away, you get a buttload of mediocrity and THAT is the result of socialized health care.

BTW, did you know that doctors in Britain have routinely left patients in the OR, knocked out on gas, while they went to HAVE LUNCH? Oh, and a beer or two WITH than lunch.

What about those of us who DO NOT need a health care plan because our company has one or we have one under Tricare? Why should I pay for someone else?

Here are two example from my blog WITH links to reports on socialized medicine and this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Moore is a pig
That's the best I can say about him.

Handy - get a grip.

In the same vein...
of contradicting the assertions upcoming by Moore et. al; in the same manner in which their is presented, one need only look to Godfather II...

When Hyman Roth thought he was having a heart attack, even THEN he wanted his own doctor flown in from Miami... quotes Roth:

"... I want my own doctor... I don't trust a doctor who doesn't speak english."

Now, I tell you, in the same manner that Micheal Moore does, that this is definitive proof that American health care is superior to that of the Cuban government.

Moore is a puke
I hated him and knew he was a bloated gas bag the day I saw Bowling for Columbine. I forced myself to watch his 911 fantasy drama, with clenched fists.

And Handy....take your agenda and tripe elsewhere. You have no proof regarding Fred, you're trying to dismantle his reputation and you have nothing else to rip him apart with, except your lame assumption he doesn't write his own articles.

I have friends in EU where they are literal victims of socialized healthcare. They were transferred from the states. They only receive 40% of their paycheck, due to the majority of it to fund socialized healthcare. Oh, and the story ends----their healthcare system sucks. It's a horror and I shudder to think what would happen to us if we allowed this.

the obvious point to me
of handy's diatribe, is the audacity to fabricate an entire argument built off a single unsupported assumption & then try to peddle it...i picture a pyramid, built upside down
this is how moonbats reconstruct reality; it's "dan rather" journalism & mooore "documentaries" running rampant...where facts are ginned up to support "their truths"
keep talking Fred, we don't buy into "pie-throwing" denouncers

Shells
Several years back, we were on vacation in Glenwood Springs and I thought I saw lardazz pass me going the other way! The vehicle even had Michigan plates and I whipped a U-Turn. I was in the combat mode but it turned out to be a false alarm. My sister was laughing as she hates the bloated pig as well but the wife was not happy! Not because I wanted to beat fat boy down but that my u-turn was too violent in "her" car!

Mike Mooreon is on my list of graves that I have to "water" before I die.

Right now, Jimmy Carter (the failed POTUS) heads the list followed closely by Bubba and Hitlary.

A real documentary
A number of years ago I saw a documentary (a real one) made by a British group about Cuba. The documentary took place in a major city near the coast.

In a nutshell, Cuba has some great hotels and beaches for European tourists. The restaurants and entertainment are also top noch. Most of the rest of the island is third world.

Several of the buildings were falling apart. In several there is no running water, they bought it from a vendor on the street or had a common spiggot. The sewer lines had ruptured and had not been repaired, no flush toilets or drains for dish water.

For several the only source of employment is prostitution. The better looking ones were working the beach area, supplying their services to European tourists. The extremely lucky Cubans were able to obtain employment in the hotels or restaurants, but had to pay kickbacks or provide favors to managers.

Again, this documentary was done by a British group that was not trying to glorify or destroy Castro.

Just Remember
Anything that's free is worth every penny you paid for it.

GunnyG
Have you forgotten about Jon F'in Carey?

Or the Swimmer?
GunnyG:

Now you've gone and done it:

What about Teddy Kennedy?

Maybe a day late & a $ short
but recently had the pleasure of seeing video, "Michael Moore Hates America" done as 1st effort by young Michigan middle-class guy. He discusses Roger & Me, Columbine & 9/11 while trying for 1-1/2 years to arrange a 45 minute interview with Moore. Warning, lots of "F" bombs in interviews with Penn Jillette. Moonbats panned this film, what better testimonial!

let hillary stand in fron of the line
I propose that hillary clinton stand in front of the cuban healthcare line followed by all her cohorts to prove their love for government socialistic healthcare. I notice her face lifts andbill clintons heart surgery weren't taken abroad to canada or cuba. why not if they belive this system works. They are hippocrits at best, only do as I say, not as I do. Bigger government gets them more power, and this is the real ultimate goal-self serving agenda.

Having Lived Under...
...both the US and UK health care systems give me "socialised" health care with it's faults anyday.
I'm not going to say that the Health Service in the UK is perfect and there will definitely need to be some reform in the next few years but it is preferable to the US system from my experience.
On a different note I'm considering having a small wager on the next US President (a freedom we are afforded in the UK), was thinking of hedging my bets and putting money on Obama and Thompson. Leaving partisanship aside do you think they have a chance? I can't see Hilary getting the Dem nomination and from what I have read on these hallowed pages Thompson does seem to be the favourite amongst Conservatives. All advice gratefully received!!!

Paulie
Oh no, those vermin on the list as well. The Devil has to be drooling knowing that The Swimmer is getting close to joining him in H*ll.

M Moore
Less of Moore is my motto.....
I pay absolutely no attention to anything coming from people like him, it's insignificant!

Cuban health care
W2, why don't you go to Canada, France, England, North Korea, Cuba, China, for your health care? The reason health care is so costly in this country is because the liberal, socialist, communist of the Democrat Party, and the RINO's in Congress, and "no balls" W have forced hospitals and members of the medical profession to treat without charge, any illegal alien, bum, or cry baby who uses hospital emergency rooms as their primary care facility. Nothing is free, and as soon as we take the shackles off of the American people, prices will come down. If you can't afford health care, die. I'm tired of paying your freight. I always say, let the government be in charge of everything, corporations, businesses, stores, shops, food, fuel, etc., and before six months is up, we will have no food, water, fuel, sewerage treatment, or trash pick-up. Get an AK, a .45 pistol, conceal carry permit, and ammo.

WMR

vespanat
Whatever. Enjoy your six-month wait to see a doc, a mediocre one at that. I'll take my Tricare Prime and that my shoulder arthoscopy was done, in less than 60 days from the FIRST appointment, by one of the finest orthopedic surgeons on the East Coast. All for 480.00 a year, than my company reimburses me for.

Not to mention that ANYONE can go to an ER and MUST BE TREATED so any claim that people are going w/o health care is pure dogsqueeze.

BTW, Benny Hill was making fun of your health care back in the early 80's and I'm sure it's far worse.

There are lies Damn lies and then there are statistics. What statistics are you talking about and who produced them? One other thing most of the industrialized countries you write about had their defense provided by the US taxpayer & therefore could afford to create their nanny state programs. If you look at their overall standard of living it is far less than ours. Things like square footage of living space, home ownership, tax rates, private vehicles. I am sure we could have "free healthcare" in this country just what are we willing to give up to pay for it. As Adam Smith said 200 years ago; "There's no free lunch, somebody pays."

Gunny G
We also can take out health insurance in this country and so I can also see a doctor where and when I want. It's just when we go to ER we don't get a bill that would cause a heart attack!!!
I'm sure we'll never agree, you have your system, I have mine and we can both be happy.
More importantly can you offer me advice on my betting on the future POTUS!?!?!

Also
Please don't base your view of the UK on Benny Hill!!!! We don't all chase scantily clad nurses in fast motion while slapping little bald men on the head!!!

vespanat
Actually, if you cannot pay for an ER visit, the US taxpayers pick up the tab. Happens all of time and that is one of the reasons we want the illegals out.

I myself would rather have the option of choosing my doctor vice having a bureaucrat tell me that I have to see Doctor Nick (from the Simpsons)

You should probably start doing a little research before posting on something that you're clueless about. Like why there are so many clinics on the USA side catering to Canadians who don't want to wait a year for routine care.

Vespanat
As a resident of Illinois, I can state without qualification that Obama is a dedicated Marxist. Pairing him with Thompson would be like adorning a prime rib with a lump of dog scat.
It's great that Fred is submitting articles in forums like this. He can express his beliefs while honoring his contractual obligations. I, for one, am eagerly looking forward to the day when our next President announces. While we haven't heard from Liberty yet today, I would be interested in hearing Thompson address some of the issues that Liberty raises. I am sceptical, however, of the contentions of Thompson being a globalist, when he his such an outspoken federalist.

Gunny G
Just speaking from my personal experience. I never said the US system was bad, just I preferred ours. As I said, it matters not we both have systems we are happy with so that's just dandy.
Leaving debate aside for a moment, please tell me whether Thompson has a chance for President as I reckon I can get good odds here on him over here!!!

Planting Ground
Thanks for that, I wasn't thinking they would be running mates, I was just assuming they would be the two candidates in the running from each party. From what I have read here Thompson does seem to invoke a degree of support from Conservatives that is lacking in all the other candidates. I think I might well risk a few pounds on him as over here he would probably still be considered an outside bet. It seems likely to me at least that Obama will be the Dem candidate as Hilary does seem to attract a lot of negativity.
I just wish UK politics was as interesting as yours is at the moment!!!!

vespanat
Actually, I was focusing in on the crowded wards, lazy doctors and nurses, all of which I've read about in reports on your "plan".

vespanat
I'm all for Fred and would willingly work hard on his campaign staff to help him get elected.

I agree with PG on Osama. The guy simply sucks. He's about as qualified to be POTUS as Hitlary was to be a Senator.

Gunny G
Would you say that most of your political ilk are of a similar mind as your goodself regarding Thompson?
I rather gathered you wouldn't have been voting for Obama but do you think he will be the Dem nomination?
Back to the debate, I think you are being a little unfair to our doctors and nurses. A former girlfriend of mine was a nurse and was anything but lazy.

DNC hit machine
It would not surprise me that Handy and his hindy are part of the DNC hit machine, already fearful of a Fred Thompson run for President.

Vespanat
Free advice is worth every penny of the cost, but here are some observations from here in the colonies. Never have i seen such widespread dissatisfaction on both left and right with the govt. The popularity of outsiders like Obama and Thompson shows that those who pay attention to election possibilities somewhat prior to entering the voting booth are in rebellion. This may very well have a strong impact on who becomes the candidates because primary voting rates are disgracefully low and these involved people have an outsize impact. If the candidates are unknowns like Obama vs
Thompson or Tancredo, its got to be a tossup. The best speaker(liar?) will probably win because neither of these people has enough of a track record to provide a reasonable evaluation. To translate this into betting strategy, i'd go with the long odds, because really, no one has any idea what's going to happen, and some unkown could come out of no where and win. Think Reagan or Peanut Jimmy.

Wake up, W2
I did my internship at a catholic hospital, which had a free clinic. It had a long waiting list, but once one got in, one had free medical care without co-payments, free prescription drugs, free allied medical services (physical thereapy, home nurse visits, access to an exercise facility etc) free hospitalizations without co-pay or the spectre of being balance billed for unecessary services- on and on. We also were very tuned to preventative medicine, offering self care seminars, advice on diet and lifestyle etc. Do you think the general health of this group was better than average? Do you think this group was more compliant with the Doctor's advice? Think again.
Of all the problems with the public health in this country, access is far down the list of causes.

gently99
Thanks for that. Don't know much about this Tancredo chap. What about Ron Paul? He seems interesting and someone who is committed to his beliefs whether one agrees with them or not. I read an interview with him that he gave in the run up to the Iraq War I think and pretty much everything he predicted has happened. Is there a chance he would run?

vespanat
political ilk? You mean right-wing knuckle-draggers like me vice left-wing limp noodles girlie boys?

I would not pizz on Osama Obama if he was on fire. The only thing that loser has done in his political career is raise taxes and fees in Illinois and smile a lot. He doesn't have enough experience to be elected dogcatcher.

You seem to know what we should be doing over here so do me a favor, name one crucial piece of legislation he's written.

BTW, I hope that you don't talk on your cell while driving your car, I heard the Brits are seizing people's vehicles. See what happens when you don't have a 4th Amendment!

End the suspense Fred!
Announce you are going to run!

Vespanat
Tancredo and Duncan Hunter are leading the charge against illegal aliens. I know Ron Paul only from seeing his name recommended by backers. Actually, all 3 of these men are basically local, unknown ciphers at the national level. That we even hear their names is a measure of the dissatisfaction and desperation of the voters to find some capable person who represents their views. The immigration mess is probably the largest issue which irks the public, but is still being ignored or even exascerbated (sp?) by the DC poltroons.

Come on GunnyG
We've discussed this before. The vespanats know that we don't actually drag our knuckles. It's just a figure of speech. I like to tie their shoes together while they are making fun of us. Always good for a laugh.

Gunny G
You really are a very aggressive fellow aren't you?? I wasn't trying to tell you how to do anything. I was just asking questions as I'm genuinely interested. It's strange, most Americans I've met, and having lived there it's quite a few, are very welcoming people, even a lot of the ones on this site who would disagree with me are able to engage in friendly discourse. You do seem very defensive and combatative and unable to have a reasonable conversation without resorting to aggressive hyperbole, thankfully you don't seem representative of the majority, whatever their views.
I don't know much about Obama, I merely speculated he might be worth a wager.
Also please can you direct me to where you heard this myth about having your car seized for talking on a mobile phone. I 've heard this before. I assume it's from the same source that claims Mohammed is the most popular name in the UK. Utter nonsense, not a matter of opinion, just fact.

Fred couldn't POSSIBLY have written...?
Fred Thompson was a lawyer (before he was an actor before he was a senator before he was an actor again). I promise you, lawyers get lots of opportunities to write. And write and write and write. (In addition to reading and reading and reading.)

Some write better than others, but I would never assume Fred didn't write this column and his others, too. And as many have noted, either way, so what?

The sad but true fact is, my dog gets...
...better health care, and more beef in the average weekend, off the salary of a Machinist, than the average Cuban does all month. Let me know when Americans start trying to tube to Cuba for health care, lol.

Where's "Lilly"?

She's in favor of Cuban medicine and Bing Cherries for a gov't mandated $1.99lb.

I'll stay away from "free" healthcare.
Thanks but no thanks!.

For all of you who seem to thing socialized medicine, please check this out. if nothing else please check pg 65

I'm a cancer survivor and if I had to wait to see a specialist more then 4 weeks like 57% of my neighbors In Canada or 60% in the UK I would have ending up cost all tax payers more money with the extra chemo I would have had to go through. After being diagnosed, I saw 3 specialist (including a Doc @ Dana Faber in Boston)and was on an operating table in one month. the US health care system made my life alot easier and I don't want to be put into a system like Canada or the UK.

Gulag
Most of you don't know what's it like to live under a regime such as castro's. I have first hand knowlegde since my roots are cuban. I've been there and hear many horror stories that you can never imagine. If you want to see what a real cuban hospital is like go to this website:http://www.therealcuba.com/Page10.htm. I can't quite understand the fascination americans have with communism or castro. You can't speak what you think. Your children are taken from you at an early age and sent to work camps. You have to stand in long lines each day to be able to feed your family. Health care is a joke. Which brings up what FT said in the article, if there is such great healthcare in cuba, then WHY!!!! did castro have to bring in a doctor from spain? Helloooooo......wake up and smell the coffee people. Americans are so complacent and don't realize that communism is knocking on your back door with idiots such as moore and the clintons........

Two thoughts
I check back this morning and Handy disappeared after being called on his ridiculous first post by sevral other commenters. What a shock, I'm sure.

More important: The winning ticket: Thompson/Tancredo!

Which would allow Fred to use, free of charge, the campaign slogan I came up with:

The T&T Ticket To Tomorrow!

(Thank you, thank you, please hold the applause...)

I think that jerubaal trapped her the other day. He said that he was trying some new pablum lure and might have bagged her in preparation for our Independence Day VRWC BBQ and Hunt.

Nothing new about communist propaganda.
I still hear my some of my American coworkers tell me that healthcare in communist countries is some of the best in the world. Just recently, I was told that even Vietnam - the modern day 3rd world country - has better healthcare than the US. Apparently, my American coworkers read such an article in the magazine "The Economist" or something like it. They also have better public education than we do.

Somehow the modern day communists (progressives) are succeeding in their propaganda. They apparently understand the term "the stupid American" better than we do. They know that they don't have to toot their own horn but let some of those in the free world do it for them, and do it in a seemingly legitimate way through the MSM. That's pretty clever on their part.

Usually in a scam, there's the clever con and there's the dolt who believe the con's scam. That's what we're seeing w/ dolts like Moore, Oliver Stone, and the rest of the Hollywood liberals. They do the talking for the commies.

I used to think that the term "Stupid American" referred to someone who hasn't traveled or has no sophisticated tastes. Silly me, that term is actually meant for Americans who can't seem to digest enough history to understand what is propaganda and who don't know enough to know how silly they sound when they beat the commies' drums.

As I have proposed to every liberal I know over and over again, I'd buy a liberal a one-way ticket to their commie paradise to live and experience that utopia and just shut the **** up for good. Wouldn't that be a hoot? Have enough liberals w/ enough nads to rescind their useless American citizenship and move to Cuba, Vietnam, N. Korea or some such hell holes. I'm still praying.

Universal healthcare
A socialist healthcare plan such as was put forth by Ms Warmth, actually "HealthScare", would probably be the end of freedom and justice in America.

Gunny and Vespanat
Vesp, you said "We also can take out health insurance in this country and so I can also see a doctor where and when I want. It's just when we go to ER we don't get a bill that would cause a heart attack!!!"

My father is retired, no income except for what he socked away for retirement, and he had a massive heartattack. He went to the ER and found he needed a triple bypass. He had the benefit of being recommended a great heart surgeon from his general practitioner of choice. He also stayed in the hospital for 3 weeks recovering and going through physical therapy.

My dad's hospital bill was over $400,000. But due to my dad's Medicare and a side health insurance company, where he pays only a total of $45 a month....my dad only had to pay out of pocket $95.00.

Viva Privatized Health Insurance!

See, if people would simply work during their life in a company that provides health insurance, and sock a little money away in a 401K until the day you retire, chances are, you'll do ok when you need to seek medical treatment. If you're smart and do your homework, you can get excellent treatment with barely any out of pocket expense. All it takes is to seek the plan you prefer that fits your needs. There's no rocket science involved.

If our healthcare was purely a socialized healthcare like it is in the UK or elsewhere, my dad would've been dead on the gurnee waiting on a flim flam doctor in an overcrowded hospital full of nose bleeds and boo boo's.

Gunnyg---If I was near Pukey Moore, I would've followed him and harrassed him with my own microphone and camera in his putrid lying face. He would've had to call the cops on me to keep me away from him.

My stepdad, a retired TWA pilot who put HIMSELF through college (engineering) as well as flight school, just had a bypass via his health care. 100.00 for the operation and free meds.

My 7500.00 arthoscopy cost me a whopping 100.00 and 3.00 for meds.

VIVA TRICARE PRIME. Offered after serving your nation faithfully.

The gov't doesn't punish the rich and shameless anymore. If they did, Mayor Bloomberg would be facing Federal gun charges from the ATF for his illegal gun strawman buys.

You have to run
Fred, you have to run for president. This column and others you've written prove to me and thousands of others you are the only one among candidates in both parties who has the smarts and the gonads to call it as you see it. And, yes, I do believe — although you didn't come out and say it — Hollywood is still loaded with wannabe commies and pinkos. It's a shame. It really is a shame for the movie industry and for this country.

Killer -- Ignorance Is Bliss
Killer, you need to get out more. If you ever have a medical crisis, pack your bags and head off to your favorite, "quality", health care clinic in Cuba or Europe or wherever and take in the "quality". You may be surprised that thousands of Cubans have actually transplanted themselves in American just to get away from such "quality" care. So, there should be room for you.

FT
While your at it. I believe we should re-think the wet foot dry foot policy we have with cubans. The majority still think communism is great and the only reason their here is to fill their stomachs and send money back to castro. Then within a month their back in cuba celebrating their daughters 15th birthday. And to top it off most of them are just looking for ways to scam this country. ps. I'm talking about the ones that have come here within the last 10 to 15 years....

Thanks for your concern. Don't worry, dentist not drunk, 2 x-rays, only cost me £15 which given current state of the dollar is about $30, not bad eh!!
Have to admit US dentists were more thorough but we Brits aren't known for the good state of our teeth!!!

GunnyG and JMJ
Glad you see my points, I hope others do.

What a lot of libs haven't even begun to fathom either is the actual cost of what this "free utopian socialist healthcare" will be, because obviously, someone's got to pay for it...

Sure they may know the government will pay for it, but like the short sighted tree hugging folk that they are, they don't figure out HOW the government will pay for all that free healthcare. Yes, conservatives, you got that answer correct---It's you and me, the working folks.

Imagine next year, horror of horros, if we had a dem in office who passed legislation for free healthcare, what our paychecks would look like each Friday?

Look at your check, and divide it in half. It could possibly be more shaved from it, considering all the illegals and anchor babies that are coming in each year.

If you own property, can you survive on 1/2 of your earnings? Can you still pay your property taxes, your mortgage, food, your kid's education?
Can you survive? Or will you have to move and sell your home like millions of middle class people will have to do?

It's all warm and fuzzy wanting to give everyone free below average substandard healthcare, but it's really going to ruin more people than it will save.

Planting Ground -- What is Globalism?
Planting Ground says, "I am sceptical, however, of the contentions of Thompson being a globalist, when he his such an outspoken federalist." Globalism and Federalism are not contradictory concepts. One has to do with Commerce and the other has to do with Government. As I view them, they have the capacity to be symbiotic. But, you seem to imply that one cancels the other. How so?

health care too
to top it off, they even get gov't assistance and medicare. hmmmm something is rotten in denmark.....

your wager
vespanat - to answer your question: if I were a betting man, yes, I'd go with Thompson vs. Obama at this juncture. If Thompson doesn't run, then Guilliani. My best guess right now. Don't know when you're placing this wager, but keep an eye out to see if Obama and Thompson maintain their pizzazz once forced to talk more specifically about the issues.

Now, if anyone has a lead on the Kentucky Derby this Saturday...

GunnyG & Shells
I live in miami (born and raised) I know my people. I even get upset when I go to the stores and the workers speak in spanish before speaking english. That really ticks me off. Mind you, I speak both languages fluently. (English first) So, I can understand why the Americans in Miami get a little pissed off when even in their own country these people are taking over. I'm not just talking about cubans, it's all of south america moving here because we've turned miami into a little latin country of our own. And just wait til the wave of venezuelans start to come over. If you think castro is an a$$, chavez is the hole....

RE: Handy
Only an intellectual lightweight thinks that direct attacks on the person are the same as attacking the message.

RE: BIGBelly
"Fred as you speak, thirteen Cubans including a four year old, braved a fourteen hundred mile trip on a dilapidated boat to come here, because health care in Cuba is second to none."

1400 miles? I guess they shoulda' taken a left at Albuquerque. Cuba is only 90 miles from Florida, kiddo :p

Handy
So where is the proof to back up your accusation?

JMJ
Well said and funny at the same time! What do you think of the goofy 'wet foot-dry foot' policy?

JMJ
You have my sympathies. Florida isn't going to be recognizable any longer. Used to be a nice place where people's parents retire. Probably not when I'm ready to retire though.

I live in the Chicago area and it's no better either.

I guess when I'm ready, perhaps Antartica will be the new hot spot for retirees. And due to Albore's predictions on global warming, it should be quite balmy when I get there. I'll wave to the poor swimming polar bears dying of heat rash.

JMJ
Forgive me I just found your response in a previous post that I somehow missed. I think the non assimilation has less to do with the policy of letting them in. I think that is a total failure of government and the American people and their stupid PC'ism.

RE: vespanat and "free" health care
"Free" health care is just GREAT....until you are actually sick, and need to be treated. Every single objective study ever produced of the health care systems that are offered for "free" in other countries has concluded the following:

1) "Free" health care actually costs MORE. In Canada, for examply, the average Canadian earning $35,000 pays something like $9,000 for their "free" health care. The cost is just hidden in that it is taken out of the ultra-high taxes they pay.

2) "Free" health care leads to shortages. Since people correctly note that it doesn't matter whether or not they use the service, they'll be charged the same anyhow, people end up going to the doctor far too often. They show up at the doctor's office instead of simply taking a pain killer to get rid of their headache. This, of course, causes the wait for service to be far, far, FAR longer for those who actually NEED treatment. But it gets even worse from here:

3) "Free" health care leads to misdiagnosed illnesses. Since the demad is so ridiculously high for "free" health care, doctors are only able to meet with patients for less and less time each. A recent survey by the Canadian government of its health care found doctors, on average, spend only about 5 minutes per patient. Misdiagnosed illnesses are rampant because the doctors have to spend so much time wiping noses when he should be spending time doing MRIs of ACTUALLY ill patients.

Cancer patients in Canada and the UK are litterally being killed by their "free" health care because of the months long wait just to get an MRI.

So, yeah, enjoy your "free" health care. Just remember, if you ever get sick, pull out your credit card and head accross the pond. We here, with our non-"free" health care system, will be more than happy to cure what ails you.

baseballdoc
Wonderful questions. On number 8 though, we might have to be more specific.

" 8. Do you support Capitalism and Free Trade or are you inclined toward protectionism and tariffs? ..."

Because what we have now, GATT, NAFTA, CAFTA, OMAN..., are called free trade agreements, when in reality they are nothing of the sort. They are managed trade agreements intended to benefit select international companies, while installing an international ruling body, the WTO, over our own Congress.

Real free trade is great; managed trade is not.

Q: How do you know Fred is right?
A: When a bunch of left wing loons come on these blogs and vomit their personal attacks instead of trying to debate the subject matter of his columns. Handy, George W Bush, nice try kiddos. Why not try discussing the actual topic instead of tossing childish personal attacks?

George W Bush
Don't you get tired trolling Fred Thompson's articles? I mean, we certainly had fun this morning calling out Handy for being a libdolt, will you be our afternoon delight?

Again, Fred isn't running, or are you that much in fear of how well liked he is, you'd prefer to pee on his parade now, just in case it gets serious?

He's writing articles of his own free will, since when must he answer all of lifes problems to satiate your internally combusting needs?

So, if you wish to continue stalking Fred like this, get some new material. Fred has new material, and we rather are enjoying it.

Your posts on the other hand, could use a little fresher air. Maybe getting out of your mother's basement would be a good start.

Mac Moore
The simplest answer is that globalism involves a willingness to cede all or part of our sovereignty over to an international ruling body. Real free trade does not necessitate, or desire, anything of the sort.

Many pundits these days are fond of saying there are 2 options: globalism, which involves the current type of managed trade agreements that we now have, our increasing involvement and establishment of ruling bodies such as the UN, IMF, World Bank, World Court and associated UN programs such as "No Child Left Behind" vs. protectionism, tariffs and isolationism.

In reality, this is a false dichotomy.

There is yet another choice. The one our Founding Fathers laid out for us very well. Free enterprise, capitalism, real free trade, limited constitutional government and individual liberty.

Handy and ilk
Fred must be hitting a lot of liberal sore spots to inspire such venomous denunciations from the opposition. All this while he is not even a candidate.

Back in Russia they call these "Show"..
places, Potimkin villages. Named for an adviser to Catherine the Great. When she traveled to see how her countrymen were living, she was shown these "show villages" her adviser Potimkin set up. Castro learned this lesson well. By the way Run Fred Run!!

beowulfe
Lefties can't speak with substance. They have none. They are gutless wonders with no spine. They are made up of hatred and bile, that they dribble out to try and infect others.

my 2 cents
Handy - are you having fun?

I thought so. Good to have you here - we knuckle draggers are a pretty serious bunch and we need some levity. Thanks for showing up.

Methinks Michael Moore can be summed up by his own words - "There is no terrorist threat".

That about says it for me

Ok I'll have a show of hands - who thinks of Michael Moore as a serious participant in the national debate? Anyone - raise your hands.

I thought so.

Fred - if you need a pithy speechwriter when you (finally) declare I'm available.

Until then my work here is done.

And the Winner is: Myth Cuba!
A good analysis, Fred. Most of this isn't new; we've known about the folly of Cuban, Canadian, British and other 'free' health care systems for years. But, I'm glad you're with us on this topic. I don't like having to hear about so-called Conservatives agreeing that we must socialize medicine 'just a little bit' to keep the Liberal hounds at bay.

There are thousands of bona-fide examples of why health care in the US is the best in the World. And it saddens me to read and see so many un-knowledgeable people clamoring onto the 'some-other-country-is-best' bandwagon---and often having their serious health problems treated in the US. Liberal is just another term for ___________ [fill in the blank, but asinine comes to mind among other things.]

I believe my fellow Conservatives spend too much time trying to answer the thread's assigned Liberal dolt. Handy was in the fore this time. But I think most of us realize his original post was ghostwritten---probably by the Daily Kos staff. You know, if just ignore idiots like him, maybe they'll go away and leave us alone. It's difficult to ignore them, I agree. But, in the long run it'll be to our benefit.

I'm glad to be presented with Fred Thompson's thoughts on a variety of subjects. Whether he actually writes them or not [he probably does], isn't a problem. If the comments are under his name banner, then we can be sure he believes them.

There are times when it's easy to lose heart at the state of the country with the Liberals swarming all over everybody with their defeatist propaganda and treachery, but people like Fred Thompson give us hope.

GWB
Uncle Fred is just getting his name out there, he's trying to get as much free ink as he can (before declaring) by opining on this and that - the NFL draft, Michael Moore and about 20 different (unimportant) things I can't even remember. He's building up name recognition, etc.

Put it together - He's never been on TH before and within the last month there are all sorts of rumors that he is thinking of running and now in the last month I have lost count of how many times he's been here (a welcome visitor I might add) and polls show that among the current republican candidates he is around 12% (without even being a declared candidate)

and add to that the unconfirmed report that ALL of the democratic candidates have to wear 20 lb. lead weights in their trousers (or bloomers) to keep from being blown away whenever (even a slight) wind comes up and tho I sometimes despair at the popularity of american idol (no I don't know the names of any of the candidates - and I'm proud of that) I still insist on believing that America can recognize that with him there is someone home.

Hello Liberty
Liberty offers, "Globism: The simplest answer is that globalism involves a willingness to cede all or part of our sovereignty over to an international ruling body."

If so, that seems a corruption or a modifiction of its logic. Globalism is not a religion or a political movement that I know of. In my dictionary globalism is hallmarked with free trade, not sovereignty issues. That seems like a good idea to me.

The English language is difficult enough without simple descriptors being shanghaied into dark and evil pronouncements.

Anyway, that's another topic for another forum.

Thanks for the reply

"Free" Healthcare
There is nothing, including healthcare, that is "free". Someone is paying and paying dearly in every system, if not with money because they are poor, then in services, availability, quality, etc. Our system at least allows the cream (the best doctors, surgeons) rise to to the top with financial incentives. It plays into human nature, and anyone whose system depends on changing that nature is bound to fail. Its best to work with it than against it.

Coming from Colorado I can speak somewhat about Tom Tancredo. He is a fine, honest, out-spoken man who is constantly being harangued by the press in his own state. I have contributed to his campaign, but have no real hope for its future. It is advantageous for the country however to keep him in the debates and some attention put on the opposing opinion of amnesty.

GWB: A Contibuting Naysayer
So, GWB, you want to know, "How many years are you going to make excuses for so called "conservatives" that bloat our budgets and expand Federal jurisdiction? Will all of Fred's supporters please answer that question."

The simple answer is, Until We Get It Right.

At least we are working on it and not sitting in the cheap seats, on a free ride, with nothing better to do than critize the drivers.

So far, Mr. Thompson looks to be a pretty good driver. He has my vote.

The Ideal Candidate, and the winner is:
Fred may not be the ideal conservative candidate, but but he is solidly ahead of any of the folks from the looney left have trotted out, and no worse than any of the Republicans who have declared.

Is anybody here old enough to remember the "Silly Party" skits on the old Monty Python show? Kind reminds me of every one of the democrat presidential candidates so far.

One thing you know for sure, if the democrats gain the presidency and control one or both houses in 2008, Taxes will go up and spending on pork will far exceed what Bush blew. There will be draconian gun control laws placed on law abiding citizens. and the borders will be opened wide open, north and south.

Mac Moore
"In my dictionary globalism is hallmarked with free trade, not sovereignty issues. That seems like a good idea to me."

I think what GWB was suggesting is that you might be able to obtain a good understanding of what 'globalism' means to those who are professing such beliefs, by reading one of their own books.
If you do not understand what they are perverting the term "globalism" to mean, then how will you recognize when you run into someone who 'gets it right'?

By the way, I agree with you wholeheartedly that free trade is a good thing. However, that is not in fact what our current trade agreements are all about. I repeat, our current trade agreements are MANAGED TRADE agreements, which do nothing more than give trade advantages to select international companies and establish an international ruling body (the WTO) above our own Congress. These agreements, INCREASE the size and scope of government, not to mention control; they do not decrease it.

Who Killed Free Trade?
http://www.mises.org/freemarket_detail.asp?control=189&sortorder=articledate

What is Free Trade?
http://www.house.gov/paul/congrec/congrec2000/cr050200.htm

"As economist Murray Rothbard explained, true free trade does not require treaties or agreements between governments. On the contrary, true free trade occurs in the absence of government intervention in the free flow of goods across borders. Organizations like the WTO and NAFTA represent government-managed trade schemes, not free trade. Government-managed trade is inherently political, meaning politicians and bureaucrats determine who wins and loses in the marketplace. We should not allow globalist trade schemes to masquerade as free trade.

One critical point must not be ignored. The Constitution grants Congress, and Congress alone, the authority to regulate trade and craft tax laws. Congress cannot cede that authority to the WTO or any other international body, nor can the President legally sign any treaty that purports to do so. Our Founders never intended for America to become entangled in global trade schemes, and they certainly never intended to have our domestic laws overridden by international bureaucrats. Quasi-governmental organizations like the WTO are simply incompatible with American national sovereignty." -- Dr. Ron Paul

Or, read to your heart's content at http://www.mises.org
Search on "free trade" or "NAFTA".

What happens in 2008 when----
So, what happens to the Democrat party in 2008 when they lose the presidency again, and get the boot in both the Senate and the house again after proving once again that they don't have a clue?

Handy:
Handy must believe Thompson will be the GOP runner in `08 ... And is paving the road of yet another leftist/liberal/democrat mantra of the Republican candidate/President is "dumb" ... (Reagan = dumb, Bush H.W. = dumb, Bush W. = dumb)

Cripes, these idiots haven't a clue or an original idea.

I Don't Get All the Fuss
I just re-read all of Fred Thompson's articles on TH, and they appear to be written, or at least edited, by the same person. And they sound a lot like Fred Thompson as he appears on TV.

I didn't see anything in any of those articles that I took issue with, but neither did I see what looked like a bold stance on anything either, with the possible exception of standing up to the PC crowd regarding things that offend Muslims.

But I echo previous posts in that I (still) need input on issues like prosecuting the war on Islamofascism, deporting illegal aliens, enacting the FairTax, sending the UN to France, developing domestic oil/nuclear energy, reducing Federal spending, and so on.

So, Thompson, should he run, looks perfectly viable so far, but he hasn't said anything that tips the scales in his favor over the others as far as I'm concerned.

Regarding socialized medicine: I recommend a visit to a nearby VA hospital sometime. It looks pretty grim to me. I don't think anyone would opt for it if the choice were to pay a higher co-pay. I also have to wonder how much of our current healthcare dollar goes to administration instead of medicine. Between the lawyers and the bean counters, I bet we pay several times what the actual healthcare costs. Maybe we need tort reform before we can get healthcare costs under control.

I wonder where the lawyer Fred Thompson stands on tort reform.

killers comments
Help me out, did "killer" really write the above comments or did he use a lackey to write them.

Hey killer did you ever see much dissent in a communist country or a dictatorship?

Again one more time, you think it is because the country is united. Please feel free to join that wonderful tropical paradise for the warm united feeling you will get.

Hi Lynne
I went out and researched it after I posted. The answer is yes they can go to Cuba, but they can not buy anything or recieve any gifts from the Cubans without a "special license" from the U.S. Government.

Since any trip to Cuba would be impossible without "buying" anything you would have to have a license.

Want to bet that Moore has one of these "special licenses"?

Amazing!
It is truly amazing that we are debating whether or not Cuba's "free" (no such thing) health care is better than America's. Based on the number of times hoardes of Cubans have been found floating their way to America, sometimes even dying in the process, it is difficult to understand how anyone could take the position that Cuba's health care is better than ours. That's like saying Mexico's water treatment system is numero uno.

I think Sen Thompson
said it all with "So when he desperately needed medical treatment recently, he could afford to fly a Spanish surgeon, with equipment, on a chartered jet to Cuba. What does that say about free Cuban health care?" None follows

George W. Bush
You say you are a conservative Name your man.
All you have done so far is talk against my man
Fred Thompson. He is electable[if that is a word]
Ron Paul isn't.

George W Bush
You don't like him, don't vote for him. You don't like his articles, don't read them. Wow, is that difficult?

You wrote: Like I have said countless times, all this flirting, this playing hard to get, this "should I shouldn't I" is really for Tiger Beat preteens.

I am truly more amazed than anything that in all your frothing, you still can apply Tiger Beat magazine to your subject matter.

So, in your opinion, who do you think is the dreamiest? Sean Cassidy or Parker Stevenson of the Hardy Boys?

Which Hardy Boy do you take more seriously to tackle and solve crime? Personally, I think Sean Cassidy is all fluff and looks, but it's really Parker's intelligence and intuitiveness that lead me to believe that not only he is the best candidate for detective, but also the dreamiest one....

I think Sean Cassidy

Also Georgie
If you knew anything about people, you'd realize that the more you have a one-man anger fest against Fred, all that will really do is draw more people to him.

So basically what you have done, is create more potential voters, that is...if Fred decides to run.

So, on behalf of myself and the other Fred fans, we thank you. Viva La George!

To Lynne
You get full credit because you were right!

To lynne
It would be nice if they actually did something like arrest one of these nutcases when they violate the law, but they will not do it.

Liberty - Always Helpful
Liberty offers, "By the way, I agree with you wholeheartedly that free trade is a good thing. However, that is not in fact what our current trade agreements are all about."

Words get so tortured when the mud-slinging Left faces against the mud-slinging Right. They get their paradigms and definitions all screwed up and it leaves me wondering what the heck they are trying to say .... Kinda like listening in on a crack-head conversation.

Anyway, your comments help me separate the sense from the non-sense.

Thank you.

Liberty: Fan of Real Free Trade
Liberty offers, "...our current trade agreements are MANAGED TRADE agreements, which do nothing more than give trade advantages to select international companies and establish an international ruling body (the WTO) above our own Congress."

Agreed. We, unnecessarily, subsidize inefficient USA sugar cane farmers so much so that more efficient and cheaper sugar made in places like Jamaica can not compete. So, they sell us Marijuana, instead. Such insanity.

Once Again
It seems the poorly named George W Bush comment poster is missing something---or a lot of somethings, I'm not all that sure. He reminds me of my mother in her later years. She would constantly rail against the Republicans and how they'd ruined her life and freedom and so on. When I pressed her for some specifics, she thought for a while and then came up with some. And every single one of them could be traced to a Democrat. When I explained this to her, she was at a loss for words. The next day, she was back to her old self of railing against Republicans. [And yet, she had always governed her life as a Conservative. Go figure.]

Some Liberals---be they in sheep's clothing or not---never change after hearing the truth either. I wish it were different because it becomes tiresome having to explain things all the time---but at least I never gave up with my mother.

What is 'Calltegfa' supposed to mean? In any case, I expect Fred Thompson to be writing in generalities at this time. That's all we need to know---his thoughts and observations on a variety of subjects. Why should he be more specific when all that would do at the moment would be give something for the Liberals/Democrats to criticize? They wouldn't be fair and balanced [or coherent] anyway. They certainly aren't in their own proposals and statements.

Once Fred has declared, he can become more particular in his comments and speeches. Even then, he's bound to be less specific than you Liberals want until later when he's in the race against a Democrat. I think he'll do fine, and the Democrat hare will be sufficiently arrogant to turn the country off to him/her.

A Sample of Communist Health Care
My wife was a nurse in an FSU republic. All of the posters who are advocates of socialized medicine should try it before they buy it.

As a nurse, my wife made the equivalent of about US$5 per month. Doctors made no more money than factory workers. The patients would bring their own medicine and dressings to the hospitals to ensure that they had enough.

Surgeons were routinely bribed with vodka and other gifts to get better care for patients. Sometimes doctors drank their gift before making rounds or operating. Family members would stay with the patients to augment the care that was received.

Syringes were sometimes re-used. You may recall an incident several years back when dozens of Russian orphans were infected with AIDS by nurses who used tainted syringes.

There are big problems with health care in this country. Medical schools limit the doctor supply to drive up profits for AMA members. Hospitals and health insurers are locked in battles over revenue. Tort lawyers like John Edwards are certainly not helping. However, it could be a whole lot worse.

Handy: Questions, No Answers
Handy offers, "Who of us wants Rush to run for the office? He’d lose a lot of influence if he got elected. I’d rather tune in to the Fred Thompson radio program at Noon than have him in the Oval Office."

I do not think that Rush is running for president. Why even consider it? Certainly, I doubt that, if he did, he would even get enough votes to make dog catcher. Rush likes to spar more than lead. He is entertainment, not leadership.

Fred Thompson, on the other hand, has leadership qualities. He is worth voting for.

Cuban Medical Miracle
I have seen the CUban Medical system at work. Clinical Testing is done with 25 year old instruments or using hand testing methods and computation of results. Doctors or spokesmen claim they can get no information but have no explanation as to why they don't get on the internet and ask for help from the U.S. or Europe or even Mexico. They backed down when I offered to connect them to a major Medical Center in the U.S. We were scheduled to visit a medical school in Havana but it was cancelled when some American doctors criticized the procedures in use there as outmoded and barbaric.

YOU ARE ALL WRONG
CONSERVATIVES YOU ARE ALL WRONG. Your heart is the right place but the argument for a conservative isn't based in whether or not a socialized medical system works or doesn't. That makes not difference to a true conservative because I true conservative understands two important things.

1) Universal health care is not a Constitutional function of the government.

2) And more importantly a conservative understands that true liberty is tied directed with his ability to earn income. As such making a determine to spend his/her own money on health insurance vs. paying more taxes to the government and having them make the choice for you is not a matter of whether or not it is a better system health care wise but rather a choice between liberty and not.

I feel it needs repeating because we as conservatives need to re examine what it really means to be conservative. We need the next Goldwater to stand up and unite the conservative movement again before we can begin to look for the next Reagan.

I agree with much of what you said.

You should check out Ron Paul. He is the real deal.

"There is one and only one voice in Congress for a foreign policy of freedom, and it belongs to Ron Paul, who has stood alone for freedom for many years. Ron is the seemingly impossible: a voice for reason and truth in a den of thieves." -- the Mises Institute

pineknot
Just why isn't Ron Paul electable? He's the true conservative in the race and yet you don't think him electable? Interesting....

True conservatism is far from dead in this country. People just have to remember what that means.

Stick to your day job
If you truly believe in an argument you will have no trouble accepting the consequences of your proposed action. This article by Mr. Thomson proves his strategy is to start instead by lying early and presumably often.

I admit I do not know the true reality of Cuban medical care. But I do know lots of countries are happy to get their doctors. The fact that these doctors leave to get better pay doesn't exactly make them hero's and more than the Mexicans who come here for better pay. The motivation is the same. One is breaking the law leaving the country the other breaking the law entering someone else's. The Cuban doctors may have a right to do what they are doing but it does involve a certain element of selfishness.

But the main point is Thomson lies about the reality of our health care system. The reality is that poor people really do get much worse treatment than those with insurance. I have medical my wife has no insurance. We have the same medical problems. She gets generics and I get name brands. Most of the time there is no difference, but some of the time there is a real difference. She desperately needs therapy. She is on a waiting list that is a year long to receive that therapy. And, like I said she is lucky to live in California. If she lived in her home state, Mississippi, there wouldn't be any list to be on.

Recent changes in medical policies in Mississippi have been followed by a dramatic increase in infant mortality.

There is an argument to be made for a purely market based health care system. But, to say that no one is denied treatment in this system is an obvious lie.

Thank you
As a second generation cuban american I thank you for exposing the truth about the cuban healthcare or lack thereof.

Run Fred Run
Fellows, while I admire Duncan Hunter, let me tantalize you with another possibility;
Fred Thompson/Bobby Jindal ticket.
Simply unbeatable. Jindal is polling north of 70% in somewhat Democratic/Katrina ravaged state that was supposed to be a poster place for GWB/conservative "uncaring" of people suffering. He is 100% conservative on just about any issue you'd care to name. And the Demof#@!ks would tie themselves into three pretzels at the same time trying to oppose a son of immigrants/minority/conservative christian VP candidate backing a Reaganesque/plain speaking/no-skeletons-in-a-closet presidential candidate.
