Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Frank Pastore from KKLA in Los Angeles interviews Richard Abanes, author of “A New Earth, an Old Deception: Awakening to the Dangers of Eckhart Tolle’s #1 Bestseller.” Eckhart Tolle is the spiritual mentor of Oprah Winfrey. Tolle and Winfrey have collaborated for an online class on Tolle’s book “A New Earth.”

“God, in the essence of all consciousness, isn’t something to believe. God is. And God is a feeling experience, not a believing experience.”—Oprah Winfrey

Pastore: [When you hear Oprah say,] “You know it’s not about belief and doctrine,” and, “God’s a jealous God” and, “I couldn’t find a seat, so I left,” what’s going on Richard?

Abanes: Well, you know Oprah talks a lot about how she is a Christian and how she believes Christianity and all of these teachings from Eckhart Tolle are compatible with Christianity. Just by those few quotes that you had right there we can see that actually this guy is teaching things that are diametrically opposed to some of the foundational teachings of the Christian faith, such as on Jesus Christ, who God is, who we are, the nature of sin and forgiveness, issues of the cross what Jesus’ mission was. So, for whatever reason, she likes saying she is a Christian, she simply—and if I can be blunt—she isn’t. She isn’t a Christian anymore than she is a Buddhist or a Hindu or a Muslim because those words mean something when it comes to various beliefs.

Pastore: What is Eckhart Tolle’s basic teaching?

Abanes: His bottom line is, what’s made him so popular [is the idea that] you can escape suffering: You can have a happy life, fulfilling, peaceful, joyful, find purpose in your life if you understand who you are…. He is basically teaching Hinduism—this pantheistic view that everything we see is just an illusion and the only reality is the underlying essence of the universal life force in the cosmos and that is what everything is. And we are part of that. We are the essence of God, and that is how he defines God.

Pastore: How should a Christian respond to all of that? It sounds like it is all the New Age movement in a different suit.

Abanes: It is. It is a New Age movement, a classic New Age doctrine repackaged in this sort of feel good, practical living skills sort of package that he is giving to people. And Christians need to understand that he is not saying anything new and that is what the old deception is. They have to understand that when we confront people and talk to them, if we are talking to Christians we need to let him know about all the Christian doctrines that he actually denies. And if we are talking to unbelievers we need to let him know of some of the things that Tolle teaches that are pretty strange.

Pastore: When I hear him talking about the law of attraction and reincarnation I’m thinking, “Wait a minute so who’s running the law of attraction? Who set it up in the very beginning? Who’s running the process of reincarnation? Who decides the distinction between good and bad karma?” I mean is it an infinite regress? There is no beginning to time, matter and space? Or is it some kind of panel, or what? And he never engages these ultimate issues.

Abanes: No, absolutely not. And that is one of the things about New Agers—and especially Tolle—that they speak in terms that are contradictory. For example, he basically says there is no God out there, no personal entity to whom we can pray, who can lead us and guide us, there is just this impersonal life force essence that is god. Yet, he will at some times switch from talking about an impersonal god to talking about a personal entity that he prays to and asks for direction. So, many of these people want to have a personal God but not the accountability that goes along with it.

Pastore: I think a lot of people in a common sense way realize you can’t pray to electricity, you can’t pray to gravity, or a tree, or a rock. And so if it is impersonal, I mean I’ve got the question: How does something impersonal create the personal?

Abanes: Well that’s a great question. The only problem is the use of that word common sense and you’re thinking about this too hard. And that’s what’s fascinating about Tolle. He always tells his followers and the people who he’s speaking to, especially Oprah, “Don’t think too much about what I’m saying. Just listen to my words and let it resonate within you. That’s the truth.”

Pastore: So you’ve written this book, “A New Earth, an Old Deception,” what is the old deception?

Abanes: Well, the old deception is the oldest deception—that we are God. Basically, go back to Genesis 3 and that was the original lie, and you see it perpetrated again and again and again in all these false religious belief systems.

This is Gnosticism, not Christianity..
Oprah has every right to believe what she wants and to communicate her beliefs. But don't call it something it isn't.

Ah, the old....
"you're not a real CHristian, Yes I am, are not, am too ,are not, am too." debate.

The instruction manual is all we need
B. = Believers
I. = Instructions
B. = Before
L. = Leaving
E. = Earth

That is all a true Christian needs to know. Bless you all.

Jack
This isn't a matter for debate. It is a matter of simple definition. Look at what Eckhart Tolle teaches, look at what Oprah states. Then check out wikipedia for entries on both religions and compare them. I am not knocking Oprah for her beliefs. I don't care what anyone believes. But don't try to make change the definitions of things. I'm not even saying Oprah is trying to be deceptive, I just think the woman is ignorant on the subject.

Oprah
This is exactly why I havn't watched her show in years!!!

Oprah is not ignorant on the subject
She's selling false doctrine and calling it Christianity. It may make her feel good and she may be completely sincere, but she is completely wrong and, with her following, is misleading millions and millions of people. I pray she wakes up.

Oakley
Oprah has been a joke for years. She's the typical elitist liberal who is trying hard to stay relevant. This newest religious gimmick is just that, a gimmick.

Jack
If you reject the biblical definition of who may legitimately call himself Christian anyway, why do you even care?

Despite her Success Oprah is lost.
A few years ago Oprah was pushing "The Secret" a book about how we completely control our own destiny by whether we are positive or negative. Basically she told us the same thing we hear about personal achievement only she took out the higher power and told us that the power is us. Now Oprah has a new nut to follow, this Eckhert Tolle character. Tolle it seems has taken the Secret and advanced its premise so that we can now be God because we created God through our feelings. I'm not a scholar on Religion by any means but I understand that Christ, God himself is a distinct seperate being or Spirit from us. We didn't create God, God created us and so God influences our actions. Although we have the power to allow God to move us or we have the power to fight God and move of our own free will. This "New Earth" is the same old deception wrapped up in a book with a new messenger or as Obama likes to say "you can put lipstick on a pig, but its still a pig or as I always say you can put a suit on a monkey but its still a monkey.

Oprah And' The Little Messiah'
I have never watched an Oprah Show and cannot understand why some women (and men) needs such pap as she has offered them.

She has the same beliefs as Obama, which is radical and not CHRISTIAN. Check her out on youtube commenting on it.

Oprah's fans should search their minds and try to see why she appeals to them. Real therapy would be an improvement.

Palin should just ignore the talk about her appearing on the show, but should not go on even if asked.

OPRAH, AND HARRY POTTER,TOLLE!!
OPRAH,MAKES UP HER,BELIEVES,AS SHE TRAVELS,THROUGH,SPACE.OUTER-SPACE,LIKE JIM-JONES AND THE GANA-KOOL-AID PARTY,SHE HAS A MUCH BIGGER FOLLOWING,WE NEED TO REALY PRAY FOR THE PEOPLE THAT FOLLOW OPRAH AND HER NEW-AGE NON-SENSE!!IT IS ALL FROM THE DEEP-PART OF HADES!!

Hmmm
I've read "The Secret," and I really enjoyed that book. It was recommended to me by a family friend who was using some of the thoughts expressed therein to fight off the fear she has felt about a diagnosis of cancer. She is trying to stay positive, stay upbeat.

I personally enjoy reading it - and I have read and re-read it a number of times. I understand that there is some goofy stuff in it. I ignore that. But I tend to focus on the passages that emphasize positive thinking and personal empowerment. I also recognize as one who teaches entrepreneurship that belief in one's abilities is a key to success. People who believe in themselves are far less likely to quit, far more likely to try, to keep trying, and to succeed than those who do not.

I also know that people's beliefs can make them sick (and I do mean physically) and can make them heal. There is ample documented proof of that, even if science doesn't know how to explain it.

I haven't read Eckhardt Tolle. I don't think that there is no God, or that WE are "God," or that God is just some force out there. However, I DO believe that all human beings have the spark of the Divine in them; that this is - at least in part - what it means to be "made in the image and likeness of God" and thus each person is of infinite value.

With everything that humans write, there needs to be some healthy skepticism. Don't take everything at face value. Are there kernels of truth in something? Look for them - discard the rest.

I will say that I think Oprah using her show and her fame as a platform to try to push a particular view of God, or of spirituality, and calling it "Christian" (especially when I see NO REFERENCE TO CHRIST) is irresponsible.

Oprah's unique position
There are hundreds of thousands of people watching her daily that gobble up everything that they hear from her- taking her voice as gospel truth. She is a false prophet with her own religion and medial outlet.

She has shown herself to be a racist in the past
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDmtPuPbVgU and is unrepentant. Her religious doctrine is all over the board.

American women need to wake up and see Oprah for what she really is- a bigot with a slick bully pulpit.

Maybe you need to turn off the tube and stop buying her magazines...

Sally 1:58 post YOU ARE RIGHT
Great article Thank You and Sally, I agree with you. to quote another article I read.."Oprah has left the God of her youth and gone after other gods"

She has deceived millions. Please pray that truth is revealed..that eyes are opened.

Isn't Oprah the talk-show tycoon who
refuses to offer Vice Pesidential Candidate Sarah Palin a guest spot when Oprah herself went traipsing around Iowa during the primaries?

Isn't this the same Oprah who showed no solidatity with Hillary Clinton, despite their earlier love fests before Obamanation?

We should wonder why she even matters.

Fat Stooge for the Left
Who cares what that fat dim-wit thinks about anything?

She's nothing more than a stooge for the left and those who watch her show need to get a life, or more likely, a job!

Bobaz...I really needed
your post...it was funnier than h***...and truthful at the same time....d***, great minds really do think alike!...lol...

Oprah
Really still don't understand why she matters and her large following.

OPRA-NEEDS TO REPENT!
SHE LEADS MANY TO THE HIGH WAY TO HADES.

Oprah needs to apologize to
both Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton for her blatant support of Barak Obama, after all the years of lip service for her wanting women in leadership.

When the rubber meets the road, she refuses access to her audience by the front runners other than Obama, who she did have on her show.

She does not deserve to have a large audience, and I hope that women from both parties join me in boycotting the Oprah Show.

Oprah Who???
Who really gives a Tinker's Dam about Oprah, her show, her advice or anything else? She has struck it rich using hungry (for attention) women who have nothing to do but watch television and gossip.

She is a bad influence for people who need dependency and coddling. She, Wright and Barry-O shared the same church and philosophies until publicity caused her to change churches.Just like Obama did.

Communist Goals for America in 1963

I have the 45 goals the Communists have for America, that was read into the Congressional Record in 1963. You will be amazed at how the Communists have succeeded by 2008 - 45 years later. I have listed five (5) examples
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Communist Goals (1963) Congressional Record--Appendix, pp. A34-A35 January 10, 1963
Current Communist Goals EXTENSION OF REMARKS OF HON. A. S. HERLONG, JR. OF FLORIDA IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES Thursday, January 10, 1963 .

16. Use technical decisions of the courts to weaken basic American institutions by claiming their activities violate civil rights.

17. Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers' associations. Put the party line in textbooks.

24. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them "censorship" and a violation of free speech and free press.

25. Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV.

26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as "normal, natural, healthy."

Oprah
It may sound trite but, if you don't know what you stand for you will fall for anything. I think the "little girl from the country" needs to find her spiritual roots.

.......
-----We should wonder why she [Oprah] even matters.....Reny-----

She doesn't.

It is really sad
that a woman who has been so successful doesn't seem to be happy. She's always searching for the next guru to make her life better. What is pathetic is how many followers the "cult of Oprah" has.

Oprah
I'm not surprised that Oprah is lost. Unmarried, childless, hiding behind a lesbian relationship using Stedman for almost 25 years is unwise.

A billion dollars will not pay for admittance into heaven. You go girl.

An Answer To Comments
Dear Jack, actually it's not the old "you're not a real CHristian, Yes I am, are not, am too ,are not, am too." It's the issue of truth vs. deception, based on documents and evidence that can be examined by rational, thoughtful, clear-thinking individuals who can compare and contrast various positions based on the texts Tolle uses to support his views. If Oprah and Eckhart want to believe in the Tooth Fairy, then that is their right and I support them 100%. But Oprah needs to stop hi-jacking the term "Christian" when by her own words she denies the standard defining doctrinal views of Christianity. I mean, really, I can't just go around calling myself a Buddhist, or a Muslim, or a Hindu. Why? Because I don't believe what is believed by Buddhists, Muslims, and Hindus. Well, the same goes for Christianity.

Dear Rowly, you asked, " Who really gives a Tinker's Dam about Oprah, her show, her advice or anything else?" Well, tbh, millions of people. That is why this is an important issue to discuss. She might no be that important to you, but to millions of people, they are taking their spirituality cues from her and going after Tolle like he has the answers to all of life's problems. So, we need to look at what this man is teaching, and find a place of fruitful dialogue.

Religious labels for money & power
Every election year the politicians dust off their bibles and pepper their comments with scripture because they are pandering to a large segment of the population. It is our obligation to see through them, and determine their true beliefs, so we can pick the right leader. As a christian, I know someone can not be a true follower of Christ if they support abortion.
I also know that people use labels to make money and deceive people for their own selfish reasons. A follower of Christ would open her/his arms and, at the very least, allow another Christian, even if she is a conservative, to speak and voice her views. Many Christians have opened their hearts to Oprah. I will leave it up to them if their trust has been betrayed or they are being deceived as to her true religion. It is their obligation to use their best judgment.
Unfortunately, too many people have made money, power, fame & themselves... gods.

Lulu
You are so right about looking for a guru.
You can tell she is unhappy.

Did I miss anybody here?

Let me quote Jack Valenti who was quoting
Wm. Faulkner who was quoting an old Southern
prayer: ""Dear Lord, let me seek the truth, but spare me the company of those who have found it."

Join our planet Laura
While I'll admit there are some classless Republicans, most of the mud-slinging coming from the right is defensive rebuts from the constant pounding conservatives daily take on CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, CNN Healine News, PBS, MSNBC and and dozens of biased newspapers. Some, including me, cannot turn on the TV without seeing the Palin bashing hit an even newer low. Since when is the lousy media our parents who tell us who to vote for and who to loathe ? Our country is on the edge of entering the moral abyss. The TV, movie, music and acadmia circles are pushing us over the edge. We have to hope there's enough people with moral intestinal fortitude to fight the left off and let them go there by themselves. You gotta be a sick sado-mac to vote yourself into hard socialism.

I can believe
What I chose to believe. That a rat created the universe, if it makes me feel good. That the universe is a rat. And so if feeling good is the measure of truth, feeling good is god. What I believe is that the Creator of the universe gives us all the right to choose whom we will serve. He respects our choice. We say to him, go away, I don't want you in my life, he will respect that choice, and for eternity, we will not be in His presence. We say to Him, I want you in my life, He made a way for that, and will take up His abode with us for eternity. He will honor our choice to honor His son who made a way for us to have Him abide in Him, by dying on the cross and then demonstrating Who He was by arising from the dead three days later. Oprah can believe what she wants. So can I. If God will honor her choice, it is not for me to dishonor it. It is not my choice, that's all. I will not debate what is true. Jesus said "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life and no one comes to the Father but by me." I have just chosen to take Him at His word. He still loves Oprah. And in that love will honor her choice not to take Him at His word. No loss can possibly be greater than not to take Him at His word.

Waiting for ver 3.0
Since the Old Testament (the Bible ver 1.0) was updated to the New Testament (the Bible ver 2.0) with less severe punishments (think stoning of adulterous women) and even changes to what constitutes a "sin" (think eating pork) I am curious what rules the Bible ver 3.0 (the New New Testament?) will claim to be the infallible "word of god"

My church
I belong to a church with one member (me) and one rule (no converts allowed). I regard the organized religion shops with feelings ranging from amused tolerance to measured dismay. But I recognize that abortion is murder, and that my personal autonomy depends on widespread gun ownership.

No fear
Oprah has no fear or respect for God our creator. She creates her own god which is money made from selling entertainment to the great masses of shallow minded people.

After a length of time they put plexi glass over some of the monkey cages at the zoo. They will do the same for Ophrah after enough folks get a face full of thrown poopie.

Democrats still think it is custard pie but it really is monkey poopie.

Yak Yak that's all she know's
I have never been a fan of Oprah. Apart from the portions of her show that I have been forced to endure were those times I was hostage in a waiting room of some sort.

If you really want to know God and truth you don't have to go through Oprah or her guru to find him.

Oprah like Pelosi don't speak on behalf of God or the Church.

Oprah
As stated is no christian she is a rich liberal racist

Responses
Dear Serpentdove, I agree -- Oprah can believe as she wishes, so can you, so can I. But disagreeing with Oprah (or anyone else) and pointing out where their views are inconsistent with either the Bible (and their own profession of the Christian faith) is NOT dishonoring to them. It is truth. You said, "I will not debate what is true." Well, that goes against not only the Bible's commands to "stand up for the faith that was once and for all delivered to the saints" (Jude 3), but it also isn't very loving since you are basically saying that if someone is walking along in error and deception, then that is just fine with you.

You say you've chosen Christ.....awesome. But now you, as an ambassador of Christ, are commanded to share your faith. One side of witnessing is a positive angle (sharing what God has done in you and why you've chosen Jesus). The other side of witnessing is correcting error and pointing out deception and non-truths where they might appear in a person's thinking & perceptions. Oddly, you also stated: "He still loves Oprah. And in that love will honor her choice not to take Him at His word."

Well, he will certainly honor her wishes and choice, but the result will be, for her, and eternity separated from Him -- which is what scripture calls "hell." To me, I feel that we must say something about such issues.

Dear Jnik, I understand you don't give a rat's @!@ about Oprah or what she does or what she believes. That's cool. No problem. The actual problem is: 1) her claims she makes that confuses others who DO care; 2) her misrepresentation (along with Tolle) of what the Bible actually says (which also confuses people). So, it is not reprehensible for people to express observations, corrections, and viewpoints to deal with these two issues, thereby helping others who ARE interested. You said, "If they choose to spend their money at Saint Oprah's instead of Jimmy Swaggart or Saint Paedophelus Catholic church, so what?" Well, the 'so what" of it is how they affect, influence, and confuse others who are looking to them with trust. you asked: "And who are you to say what they found is wrong?" Well, that would be a matter of Free Speech, as well as common care/concern for others. And there are, of course, basic facts that can be cited to show they are AT LEAST wrong about what they claim the Bible states.

I think Oprah has become
so successful that even she struggles to understand why. Its sad to see what has been become of her - I think she really believes she is some sort of prophet to speak to the rest of humanity. Most likely, those around her perpetuate that illusion. But look, there have always been false gods put forward - it is our duty to not be fooled.

Oprah Who???
In the grand scheme of things...Oprah is irrelevant.

YET ANOTHER OPRAH DECEPTION!
I agree totally with you...this man is preaching a multitude of religions all roled into one.

I found it interesting the other day when someone in government referred to Obama as Jesus...who he interpreted to be a "community organizer". I wrote in a blog - my friend if you were a Christian one of the first things you knew about Christianity is that it is based on the "fact" that Jesus Christ was and is the "Son of God"...not a community organizer.

Too many times the description of a Christian is given as just a label. But Christian means a follower of the Son of God.

Through the centuries God gave man every opportunity to love Him of their own free will. Adam and Eve were given that option and they chose to eat of the apple (temptation and revelation). God grieved over their choice and had no option other than to remove them from the garden into a life where they had to toil and work for their own care...He could not abide with sin. Over and over God worked with mankind...to no avail!

Then He gave the greatest gift He could give...himself in the form of His son to redeem mankind of their sin. The scriptures were fulfilled and we have the promise of a new tomorrow because of what the Son of God did for us on the cross. Not because he organized our communities.

The gift of salvation (redemption from sin and damnation) is ours for the asking. A simple, fervent prayer in our hearts to our God and our Savior. It has happened over and over again in the hearts of men/women/children since His death and resurrection. The acceptance of this gift brings joy, peace and hope for tomorrow both on this earth and when we leave this earth.

Oprah's endorsement of this teaching is off the wall just like her endorsement of the Flim Flam Obamaman as the "one" that we need to save America!
