Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Work in Washington long enough, and you’re bound to agree with almost everyone at least once. Even socialists occasionally have good ideas.

Take Sen. Bernard Sanders, the independent from Vermont. He’s a self-proclaimed socialist, and most of the policies he supports (government-run health care, trade protectionism) are proven failures.

However, when it comes to the continuing federal bailouts of failing businesses, Sanders is on to something. We need much more openness.

At a March 3 hearing, Sanders asked Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, “Will you tell the American people to whom you lent 2.2 trillion of their dollars?” Seems like a reasonable request. Yet Bernanke’s answer was “no.”

The Fed chair tried to add that identifying the banks in question could stigmatize them and discourage them from borrowing from the central bank. Sanders cut him off, though, later adding that, “given the size of these commitments, it is incomprehensible that the American people have not received specific details about them.”

Amen to the sentiment, if not the impolite way it was offered. Americans deserve to know where their tax dollars are going. This is especially true when that money is being borrowed by lawmakers today and will have to be repaid with interest by future taxpayers.

Just two years ago, then-Sen. Barack Obama seemed to understand this. He worked with conservative Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., to pass the Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act of 2006. The bill created a federal database to allow anyone to find out where federal money is being spent.

By law, the government is supposed to tell taxpayers who gets federal money, how much, what the money is for and where it will be spent. “This bill is a small but significant step toward changing the culture in Washington,” Coburn said then. “Only by fostering a culture of openness, transparency and accountability will Congress come together to address the mounting fiscal challenges that threaten our future prosperity.”

Added Obama at the time: “By helping to lift the veil of secrecy in Washington, this database will help make us better legislators, reporters better journalists, and voters more active citizens.” Unfortunately, President Obama has yet to meet the standard he set as a senator.

A major problem with emergency spending programs such as the AIG bailout and the Troubled Assets Relief Program is that the true depth of the threat to our economy hasn’t been clearly defined. Taxpayers aren’t being told what their money is accomplishing, let alone what it’s supposed to accomplish.

The transparency problem extends to the general budget process. As a presidential candidate, Obama promised to promote openness by posting the contents of any bill for at least five days before it would become law. If he’d remained true to that pledge, bloggers, journalists and the general public would have had time to comb through the near-trillion dollar “stimulus” package lawmakers passed in February.

It’s entirely possible that someone could have seen the Dodd amendment (and how the Treasury had changed it) that ended up allowing insurance company AIG to pay some employees huge bonuses. Our country could have avoided the political circus we’ve seen in recent days.

It doesn’t seem like too much to ask for members of Congress to read the bills they pass. If they won’t voluntarily, we need to embarrass them into it by reviewing their handiwork and criticizing it before it becomes law.

Transparency is critical to an honest budget and responsible spending. Indeed, it’s the only way we can hold policymakers and bureaucrats accountable for what they do with our money.

Obama lied
Obama has lied so many times and been caught I can't keep track anymore.
Will the msm news mavens ever release any Obama toking his off the wagon ciggies pics ?
Let's face it, there isn't a lie the government can't pull off anymore.
I heard the bill was up for 2 or 5 hours before it was slam passed.
Whatever, the criminal commies have taken over and there is no going back. All they do is tell us massive lies, and cover every new criminal act up with more lies. I don't believe they follow the law at all anymore. They have a loophole and legalized crime for everything they do every second they serve - and even their illegal campaign dollars don't wind them up in prison.
We are, as a nation, completely ruled by the DC criminals, and there's no way the FBI nor anyoen else can catch up to them. It's on a roll that cannot be stopped.
Now they've swiped hundreds of billions and too many are saying it's already been rolled over to trillions - and I watched Geithner claim every cent is accounted for and backed up with equity and they haven't really spent a dime, in effect. Then one of them claimed the FED pays tens of trillions in profits into the US treasury every year, and that would make up for it all...
LOL
It's an Orwellian scene from start to finish - and they all have their flowery lies language to cover up in plain sight the MASSIVE CRIMES they are constantly dealing with.
It is a joke my friend, a sick gigantic criminal joke.

Wait
You mean the Constitution is supposed to matter?

Someone had better inform the Democrats.

A bad joke
"Transparency is critical to an honest budget and responsible spending. Indeed, it’s the only way we can hold policymakers and bureaucrats accountable for what they do with our money."

Ha Ha Ha!!! Whew, that's a good one. Almost made me spit my coffee.

Frankly, the only thing transparent in this whole circus is the fact that the Democrat party and it's nominal leaders hold the American public in such contempt that they consider themselves not only above the law, not only not beholden to the oath of office they take, but as our sovereigns and not our servants. It's time for the fork and pitchfork crowd to start oiling up their peacemakers.

Speed 39
You've said it all.

LACK OF TRANSPAReNCY
How many Americans know of the Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act of 2006? Not many is my guess.

Under this Act we should now be able legally to impeach every member of congress and Barack Obama. Do we need to call an attorney to get started?

What difference does it make?
What difference does it make if we know where the money is being spent? What, we gonna do something about it one way or the other?

Where know where a whole lot of where the porkulus is to be spent...are we doing anything about it?

Bernanke could have said: "Yes, it's going to...Al Qaeda."

And the next day there would be sixty-three columnists writing: "While I agree that Barrack Obama is a very bright and articulate man and whose election as the first Black President of the United States was an historic occasion, sending two trillion dollars to Al Qaeda..."

And as soon as Rush Limbaugh brought-up that there might be something just a bit out of line with doing that...many Republicans would be taking issue with him.

Oops,
That's TORCH and pitchfork.

Reba, problem there is how do you find a lawyer willing to go through the "politics of personal destruction" campaign that will surely be waged against him. As conservatives, we tend to be like lions, holding our own individually against the packs of liberal hyenas that gather for the kill. Because it is not in our natures to fight like the hyenas, who are cowardly on an individual basis, we are at a constant disadvantage as we are singled out for attack.

The American people will be pushed by liberal bullies until something snaps. No matter what, there won't be a happy ending until long after the ugliness is over.

SPEED 39
I guess you are right. Since we are up against attack dogs we have to use the Lion of the jungle approach. You say the same thing that my husband says.
He is a 26 year retired Military Veteran and has seen more action than I have. While I rant and rave and scream at the actions of this administration, he calmly states that it will change when enough Americans are feed up. I have to keep faith that this is true in order to keep my sanity.

Reba
Please thank your husband for his service.

With any good fortune, we'll be able to reverse some of the damage that is being done to this country by the dems after the next election. Sad to say though, every time we are put in this position, we permanently lose a little bit more--maybe now a lot. They're trying very hard to make changes that can't be undone.
