Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

“Today does not mark the end of our economic troubles,” President Barack Obama announced as he signed the so-called stimulus bill. “But it does mark the beginning of the end.”

It’s not clear whether he was intentionally paraphrasing Winston Churchill’s famous 1942 speech that included the phrase “the end of the beginning.” But the passage of this law certainly marked the end of at least one thing: Obama’s promise to bring transparency to the legislative process.

As a candidate, Obama vowed that “when there’s a bill that ends up on my desk as president, you, the public, will have five days to look online and find out what’s in it before I sign it, so that you know what your government’s doing.”

Well, there were three days between this “emergency” legislation passing Congress and Obama signing it at a political-style rally in Denver. But that doesn’t tell the tale of how swiftly the measure was passed.

Lawmakers had only a few hours between when the final bill was presented and when it was voted on -- late on a Friday night, of course. The bill came in at more than 1,000 pages, and lawmakers should have taken Obama’s suggested five days (at least) to review it. That would also have allowed journalists and bloggers to identify problems with the bill. Once the passed bill is sitting on the president’s desk, there’s nothing he can do to improve it.

Meanwhile, Obama clearly violated the spirit of his promise of openness. The original House measure, for example, contained no money for high-speed rail lines. The measure the Senate passed a few days later contained $2 billion for such projects.

By the time the final bill passed, it contained $8 billion for high-speed rail. That’s some compromise. Did most lawmakers even realize the extra $6 billion was there? Probably not. As Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., told CNSNews.com. “I don’t think anyone will have the chance to [read the entire bill].”

Meanwhile, a few days before the bill passed, Obama held a news conference to announce, “It also contains an unprecedented level of transparency and accountability so that every American will be able to go online and see where and how we’re spending every dime.” Not only did Americans not know what we were getting, lawmakers didn’t know what they were giving us.

“What [the bill] does not contain,” Obama added, “is a single pet project, not a single earmark.” The rail example alone casts doubt on that claim, but there were others. Columnist Michelle Malkin identified a number of pet projects, including $2 billion for a power plant in Illinois, $300 million for low-emission golf carts for federal employees, and $65 million for digital TV coupons.

The irony is that, during his brief Senate career, Obama was a powerful voice for open government. “We can all agree that government ought to spend money efficiently. If government money can’t withstand public scrutiny, then it shouldn’t be spent,” he said, sensibly, in 2006 while pushing for the Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act.

That law, proposed by Obama and Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., demanded the creation of a Google-style search engine to allow anyone to track more than $1 trillion in federal contracts, grants and earmarks. It was an important step toward open government.

But such steps are easily derailed when lawmakers race to meet false deadlines and do their work behind closed doors. The sad fact is that a bill to spend $787 billion flew through Congress in just days with virtually no public input and no real “adult supervision” from the White House.

“Sin in haste, repent at leisure,” the saying goes. Well, our government just acted in haste. And American taxpayers will be repenting that action for years to come.

Killer
Legend in his own "Mind"

Knower of Many Things

I feel lucky just to be on the same blog with him............

How is this any worse
than when the Republicans rammed the "Patriot" Act through Congress?

Ed, It is clear what is going on
Obama and Emanuel both recognize that a crisis is an opportunity to jam things through one couldn't get otherwise.

The more transparency they put into the process the less the chances they will be able to enact their radical, far-left radical, and extremely destructive agenda. The crisis will last until Obama is replaced or America wakes up.

Jims Jab - looking to killers lesson
I would like to see killers explanation of economics as well.

Linking the stochastic process of economics to the dynamics chaos theory will be a hoot.

Professor Killer your eager students are waiting.

Waiting for Open Government
"The Obama Hangover is the pain a moderate Obama backer is now feeling after having been promised the moon and realizing they have instead . . . been mooned". Doug Giles 2/08/09

Don't underestimate the power of the pretender's propaganda machine to twist all his administration’s failings as triumphs and the few, if any, positive outcomes as miracles only the "anointed one" could produce.

Prevaricator-in-chief Nobama:
Malodorous governance: I don’t know if I can hold my nose (and breath) for four long years. Remove the pretender NOW based on his gross deception of the voters as to his eligibility (born in Kenya or Pluto?) to even run for president.

Arrogant Governance: The time honored way voters show their dissatisfaction: Run the pretender out on a rail!

Two thumbs down to the clown who makes me frown. The pretender will surely render more than a fender-bender with all this wild squander of tender. For from debt we’ll all drown while this fool with a crown fiddles away in DC town.

How many of these Reps and Sens
would sign a contract to buy a home or some other personal item without reading every bit of it? Aren't a good number of these bozos attorneys?

Professor Killer
Add explaining Marxism to your syllabus in educating us. We are awaiting you next example of superior intelligence.

The Good News.......
Open government does not have to start from day one!

The Bad News: I have the plummer scheduled in the morning. Those that like Reagan know the joke.

Rich Not Wealthy
You sound like a "Little Boy" whose best friend took his ball. Everyone, who is someone, has put the birth question to rest. Unless you are willing to keep this foolishness up for 7 years and 11 months. Move On...Please? Also, you and others would not be able to recognize a "Marxist" with help.

Anyone really surprised by the Marxist?
Only the koolaid drinkers believed a single word the "One" spoke. Unfortunately, there was way too much koolaid being drunk.

The only hope for the country now is that the SCOTUS will do its job and force the One to present valid qualifications for the Presidency. Then all this nonsense will be null and void. We will still be in a mess, but at least we will be rid of the Marxist!

Post-1900
"Open government" seems to be largely an oxymoron.

Oh come on Killer
Educate us on economics, we are only limited by your ability to explain.

Grilly Alan
Economics is not a strong suit for most Americans. It does me very little,if any good, to discuss economics with such a limited group. The premise by which economics is debated in America, is so "Flawed", that any understanding would supersede the "Chaos Theory". Trust when I say;President Obama will receive more "Praise" for his efforts, due to the ignorance of the conservative right, than he could ever deserve.

and now?
And now BO is worried about fiscal responsibilty? Of course, it will be easy to cut the deficit by 50% in four years, just shift the spending to another stimulus bill.

We All Know
that he intends to end Amerrican government as we know it. Only some (not mme) know where he intends to take it. I submit that it is NOT in the direction he would hope you believe at this time. I attribute malicious intent at this time. I have not been pleased with one single appointment or move this man, or his wife, have made since the swearing-in, and many prior to. We are in for an extremely rude awakening!

YA BUT
"Today does not mark the end of our economic troubles," President Barack Obama announced as he signed the so-called stimulus bill. "But it does mark the beginning of the end."

THE END OF WHAT?
AMERICA AS WE NOW KNOW IT?

A GOD-DAMNED LIAR: OBAMA
This president is the most decietful president in my lifetime. Not since Nixon have I felt the lying, twisted reality of two-faced propaganda.

The American People are to Blame. We allowed this to happen by believing in "JUST WORDS" and forgetting the Actions of this man.

THE NEW LEGISLATION CALLED A STIMULOUS SHOULD REALLY STIMULATE AMERICANS TO QUIT THE SYSTEM AND STOP SPENDING. SHOW THE GOVERNMENT THAT WE CAN STOP SPENDING IF THEY CANNOT.

DO NOT BUY MOVIE TICKETS.
DO NOT BUY LUXURIES.
DO NOT BUY VACATIONS.
DO NOY BUY AIRLINE TICKETS
STOP BUYING AND SHOW WHAT WE CAN DO.

LIARS RUN THIS GOVERNMENT.
LIARS Are running your life.

but they will not run mine.

ROWDY BOOTS

Say what?
Hey Killer, what flavor cool-aid do you prefer, the red or the pink? Whatever flavor, it has obviously harmed your ability to reason.

If you think that spending $800 TRILLION in a matter of days, with no public input, by legislators who never even read the bill they were voting on, that was put together behind closed doors by partisan hacks, that's filled with pork and leftist social engineering programs, and will ultimately cripple our economy, somehow compares to past behaviors by other administrations you are delusional.

I can only hope that the "Young" people you refer to wise up and realize the this current group of "Old" guys in Washington is doing it's very best to screw them out of their inheritance and is counting on them remaining ignorant and uninformed.

Ed
You are an "Old" person. Therefore, when you say that you are still waiting for something,it means a lot. Of all the years you have existed, none of those administrations provided "Open Government"? But now you expect "Open Government" from an administration that's 30 days old. Wouldn't this suggest a little bit of "Over Expectation". Wal-Mart takes longer than 30 days to open a store, even with the building up. I know you have an "Axe to Grind" but you are turning off the "Young"!

The End
In January 2009, The Obamessiah became President of the United States. HIS first action in office was to destroy all nuclear weapons; the second to eliminate all fossil fuel sources. Behold, nuclear weapons and fossil fuels no longer existed on Earth.
Behold, the planet was covered with solar-panel fields, and windmill forests, which don’t produce electricity when the sun doesn’t shine and the wind doesn’t blow.

After ten years, there was only peace and harmony on the planet, because, for five years, the noises and vibrations from the windmills drove many people to suicide, and the solar panels killed most food plants. The 2014 Ice Age froze the people who hadn’t starved, because there wasn’t any heat for their homes, and destroyed the windmills and solar-panels. Everybody died except for The Obamessiah, Algore, and 12 other liberals living in the hydroponic garden in the bunker below Mount Rushmore.

One day, the Mount Palomar Observatory said that “The Asteroid”, an outer space rock the size of The Alps, was on a collision course with Earth, as a 2008 NOVA documentary warned.

One liberal got out the file on “The Asteroid” to find out what to do. The instructions were to launch six, 20-megaton nuclear missiles and land them on “The Asteroid”, and then detonate them one-by-one, three seconds apart. The phased explosions should divert “The Asteroid” from hitting Earth.

Then one liberal said, “We can’t do this! HE beholded the missiles and fuel out of existence! We don’t have missiles to launch and fuel to launch them.”

Then they said, “HE can behold “The Asteroid” not to hit the earth.”

After telling HIM about “The Asteroid”, the liberals realized that HE was actually the Twelfth Imam, THE ONE that, back in 2007, Muslim terrorists said would destroy the world in two years. Two years after 2007, was when The Obamessiah “beholded” the missiles and fuel out of existence.

Wake Up Call
Government continues to learn absoluately nothing from history. John Jay Legislator, statesman and judge said, "Let a general reformation of manners take place; let universal charity, public spirit, and private virtue be inculcated, encouraged, and practiced. Unite in preparing for a vigorous defense of your country as if all depended on you. And when youhave done all these things, then rely on the good providence of Almighty God for success, in full confidence that without his blessing all our efforts will inevitably fail." Where are We." "Providence," said he, "has given to our people the choice of their rulers, and it is the duty, as well as the privilege and interest, of a Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers." God's will or man? Appears to be the later.

"...mark the beginning of the end..."
In reference to Obama's left-handed scribbling his mark on his redistribution of wealth bill while saying,

“... it does mark the beginning of the end”,

the author wonders whether the Marxist-in-Chief,

"was intentionally paraphrasing Winston Churchill’s famous 1942 speech that included the phrase “the end of the beginning.” ?

No.

I think he meant EXACTLY what he said.

I think in this case,
it's better to paraphrase the adage as, "Deceive in haste, celebrate in leisure."
