Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

If there’s any good news from this recession, it may be this: We’ve seen how Washington works. The picture is so ugly, it may be enough to spark real reform in the years ahead. Here’s what’s been going on:

Every so often Congress gets hold of a bill that simply must pass. A defense spending bill, say, during war time. So lawmakers exploit the situation, tacking on pet projects that have nothing to do with defense.

This year’s must-pass bill is a “stimulus” measure.

True to form, Congress has loaded the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 with hundreds of billions in wasteful spending. The bill includes $650 million for digital TV coupons, $140 million to study the atmosphere and $50 million for the National Endowment for the Arts.

None of these proposals would create jobs or boost our economy. They’re just old-fashioned waste. And that’s a problem. Crying “stimulus,” Congress intends to spend money it doesn’t have to accomplish things that don’t need to be done on a scale never before seen. If signed into law, this leviathan would be the largest single spending bill ever passed, adding at least $819 billion (before interest) to the national debt.

If lawmakers had decided to borrow the money for this stimulus plan directly from Americans, the average family would have to fork over $10,520 this year. That’s more than what that same family will spend on food, clothing and health care for the entire year.

If lawmakers were honest about what they’re doing (spending borrowed money) they’d have to admit that they’re asking hard-pressed American families to loan the government more this year than those families will otherwise spend on essentials.

Of course, the government won’t borrow directly from Americans. It’ll attempt to raise the money on the international bond market, meaning our country will go deeper into debt to foreign lenders, especially Japan and China.

And what will this spending accomplish? Not much.

The Congressional Budget Office studied the “stimulus” package, and found only about half the money lawmakers want to spend will be used this year or next. In other words, it’s not a jolt to the economy, it’s pointless as stimulus, and the lawmakers who voted for it must know that.

Their real goal seems to be to expand the government. This bill includes some $140 billion for education -- almost twice what the Education Department spent all of last year. It also aims to pump $35 billion extra into the Department of Energy, a stunning sum since DOE’s current annual budget is $23.8 billion.

Once these bureaucracies expand, good luck trimming them back. They’re apt to be as temporary as the New Deal “Rural Development Utilities Programs.” Its mission to electrify rural America was completed decades ago, yet it still exists.

Politicians think they can palm most anything off as “stimulus.” An early version of the bill, for example, included hundreds of millions for contraceptives. “The family planning services reduce cost,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi explained while defending the plan on ABC, “to the states and to the federal government.” That’s arguable at best.

Still, even if that were true, reducing the birthrate would be a pretty slow-motion way of reducing federal costs. It would be faster and more efficient to axe a department or two instead.

Luckily, the contraception spending was axed once people became aware of it. That proves that, when the public pays attention -- and complains -- lawmakers will do the right thing.

Hopefully it’s the beginning of a trend.

On the Democrat Plantation
This so-called stimulus bill reveals the utter stupidity of the Democrats. Any American with any commonsense whatsoever can see that it would not accomplish its goal of reviving the economy.

The utter corruption of the Democrat majority in Congress is mind-boggling. They are pursuing a totalitarian regime designed to make every American wards of the state.

But the people who elected these incompetents, Democrat voters, are just as stupid. We have plenty of evidence in New Jersey how incompetent Democrat politicians are and how clueless their supporters are.

So it comes down to the uneducated voters who compulsively pull the levers for their slave masters. I just had an epiphany: we all live on the plantation because the stupid outnumber those who want to be free and live their own lives unfettered by a government octopus with tentacles in every facet of human affairs.

Well, well look who crawled out from
under his elite rock. Sadly, Feulner's only mission seems to be to continue the crash of the US economy caused by his failed philosophy into full blow depression. It is about jobs; it is open or you would not even had time to write this.

"...Their real goal seems to be to expand the government..."

The goal is competent government. As Heritage acolytes have so clearly proven, this goal is beyond their capabilities. Now please take your recycled Hooverism back to your ivory tower or is it a bunker where you lurk?

Like burning down the Reichstag...
The crisis that government created shouldn't be lost as an opportunity to create more government programs to control people's lives and more economic misery and more servitude to the masters of the Democrat party.

It's all sort of like the Nazis burning down the Reichstag ...

LMAO you whining, sniveling name caller starting right off with the allusions to Nazis. You truly are pathetic

Stimulating Socialism
Nancy Pelosi's wish list is certainly going to help bring the Republican party together. The sheer arrogance of Pelosi expecting that the Republicans would have to give in to her folly has energized the base again. The democrats thought that the Obama popularity would allow them to do whatever they wanted. Fortunately, many who voted for the King are now rethinking what they did. The American people need a stimulus package that will help get the economy moving. People are smart enough to know that this bill is nothing more than a payback to many while it is a way to make others more dependent on the government. Now is not the time for politicians to spend money to further their pet projects or for them to try to firm up their base for the next election. It is time for them to do their job and work for the American people, something the Democrats and Republicans have forgotten over the years. We can ill afford this kind of spending spree. We are in an economic crisis and Washington just wants to do business as usual.

Stimulus for Defeat
There must be someone in the leadership - both parties - who're saying:
"If we can just create a national emergency, we can kick off Executive Order 11490!"

No more pesky Constitution! No more Habeas Corpus! No more freedom.

We're spending our way into a state of emergency.

Inflation Bound
Since debts are set at the dollar value when incurred, what is one way to reduce them? INFLATION! With the new money placed within the system through the proposed 'Stimulus Plan', if it works short term, there will be much more money circulated trying to make up for the new shortages. More jobs. and accelerated 'INFLATION'. Yes, reducing the cost of past fixed rate debt but also reducing equally the value of fixed valued dollars saved by the more frugal. Is this part of Washington's plan? Reduce the recessed debt by 5 or 6 % a year thereby enabling politicians to incur future debt. What does it take to get these spend junkies rehabilitated?

Been Here Before
First the Shamnesty Bill, now the Shamulus Package. It needs to die a quick death.

Liberals at the root of our problems
Liberals, both Democrat and Republican, have steered our country to almost complete failure.
It's time to start reverting this situation. Not with bogus "stimulus" plans but with common sense.
Our government is the most meddlesome in the world and this alone is one of the major disincentives to business development in this country.
On top of that business has to spend enormous amounts pre-emptively on legal defense due to the nature of this society, the most frivolous in the world when it comes to litigation.
After all that, we have the world's highest corporate taxes.
So why would any investor in their right mind want to set up a business over here ?
In our case the EPA has been trying hard to put us under their jurisdiction. We told them we will move our production overseas and their response was they'd "ban our products from this market." Well, 80% of our market is outside of the USSA, so the only thing they will ultimately "ban" is American jobs ...

The DMP
This should more properly be called the DMP or Democratic Masturbation Package. The Democrats are the only ones stimulated and they certainly are not fertilizing the economy.

mo govenmnt, mo welfare, mo protection
Democrats wanting to spend taxpayers money and constrain individual liberty. Nothing new under the sun.
burning down the Reichstag ... perfect analogy. Its just the same old "tax and spend" taken to the next level.

Reform Requires Reformers
In order to get reform on Capitol Hill, someone needs to be willing to change.

Congress sees nothing wrong with what it is doing thus sees no need to change.

The only way to get reform is to get new "Reformers" to change the old "Reformees".

In other words, "Throw the bums out!"

Now there is "Change we can believe in."

Get off the Teat!
"Obama Ain't Yer Mama"!

Here's an Idea!
If all these spending ideas are so urgent and "stimulating",why not do the work FIRST,then send taxpayers the bill? I'd like to see some results FIRST. We already know what's happening as it stands. I know,it's a naive idea. Silly me!

that's exactly what they plan to do...
Only instead of accountability, there will be interest. It's called federal borrowing and they do it all the time.

Once again.....
Dr. Feulner is as right as rain and as a Heritage member, I am glad to see them at the forefront of the opposition to this bill. I encourage anyone who holds conservative values close to their heart to go to http://www.heritage.org and become a member. They truly are my represenative in Washington D.C. and are so vitally important to today's debates. Give them a look.

it's time to pay the piper
when you promise something in return for votes you must come through or risk losing your voter base, call me cynical if you wish, but, this pork-stimulus bill is just payback for the votes that the Democrats "bought". Unless they wise up and do the right thing, they're toast come 2010/2012. we are supposed to be in a great economic crisis that threatens our way of life, isn't the patriotic thing to do what's truly in the best interest of all the country, not a beholden few. for years i've heard and read how beholden Bush was to special interest, yet, when push comes to shove, it's seems the Democrats are no better. they're acting like they just got their first credit card in the mail and off to the shopping mall they go...... shameful!!

What are the democrats stimulating?
Louis Luca
They're stimulating a disaster for America. Wait till all those people
who voted for the 'Messiah' find their social security cut or 'it could be possible' eliminated. Once a bill is voted in try to eliminate it.
In my generation, I remember during WWII, congress taxed telephones with the provision when the war was over the tax would be eliminated. Fat chance! That's how politicians work. ALL POLITI-
CIANS! I have never seen such a bunch of timid souls as the republicans have been for 8 years. I say throw them out also. I pray
( you know the word) that a new breed of politician appears that cares about the country first instead of the party.

The new breed is here Obama is their leader

Things must get worse -- NOT
If Ed is saying "things must get worse before they can get better" -- I say not true.

And that's not the same thing as saying "things will not get worse before they get better."

B.Hussein,Useful Puppet
BHO has learned well at the feet of his socialist/marxist mentors. He learned to take orders and say the right words to sound sincere and believable to the naive.

He gets his talking points from Soros,Ayers and his other subversive puppetmasters. He dances to their tunes. Only UnAmericans and the naive could like what they see.The rest of us are onto him.

Ditto Rowly in Ga.
Obama is a puppet and puppet leaders are always dangerous. Especially a puppet such as Obama, who is also a narcissist whose head is filled with delusions of greatness.

This election and this current congress are showing their hands quickly as they try and pass 40 years of socialist promises and paying back unions and others who bought and paid for Obama's election.

I believe that American's now see and understand the Clear and Present Danger of Obama and Socialism, generally.

It is time to get loud and vocal and put aside timidity and political correctness. Obama's appointees so far are just a continuation of his past criminal associations. I believe that Americans, in spite of the Main Stream Media's propaganda campaign to prop this puppet up, are finally awakening from their stupor and don't care much for what they are seeing.

Greyhawk
If this power grab is not stopped in it's track this week,we are doomed. The reason the left wants it slammed through is ,they know if the public knows what is in it,they will revolt.

There is not ONE thing it contains that is to stimulate the economy. The only thing it contains is a way to get the government's clutches and control of every aspect of our lives.

Some of these left wingers deserve what they will get. The rest of us do not.

The Pelosi Pork is still there. .
See the Pelosi Pig

Someone correct me
The idea behind the stimulus was that the credit system needed to be bolstered so that banks would start lending. If we make the banks sound they could start lending. Banks start lending credit freed and homes start to sell until rates come closer to the point where many will no longer be upside down with their home loan.

If the mark to market rule is changed the banks can make loans because the mark to market loans are no longer negative on the balance sheet.

We saw your message Hal
We're just ignoring it.

This bill is Obama's signature legislation.

Since it will fail miserably to create productive jobs, maybe that is a good thing.

Maybe the American people will wake up and realize that big government is not the answer, and vote in a real conservative.

"This so-called stimulus bill reveals the utter stupidity of the Democrats."

you could not possibly be more wrong. there is absolutely nothing stupid about democrats. their aim is to be in power during the destruction of our country, and to get as large a share of the loot as possible. they are accomplishing this goal admirably.
if democrats had the long term benefit of their country at heart, then the things they do would be stupid. they dont, and they arent. they will win, and the nation will die.
the republicans, on the other hand, are stupid. they repeatedly fall for democratic treachery. reach across the aisle, the democrats say, and the republicans repeatedly reach, and they are taken advantage of every time. when republicans are in "power" they allow the dems to keep all their ill-gotten gains, and they make nice with the dems. when dems are in power, the republicans are repeatedly schooled in the use of power. when will they learn? never. can you imagine republicans actually trying to lose a war for political gain? i cant. but we dont have to imagine the democrats trying to lose a war for political gain, they have already tried, and may yet succeed.

curmudgeon
Well said. You have succinctly described the failures of George W. Bush. Once the dims started the Clintonista Vast Left Wing Conspiracy attacks in 2003 he should have rallied the conservative side from Fox and radio to the stauchest conservatives in Congress and called them what they were. Traitors. Every time Hi-liar-y talked incompetence and screached, "How dare you call our criticisms unpatriotic!" he should have said, "Yeah Hi-liar-y tell me about incompetence since you should know alot what with BJ getting it right under your nose."

CURMUDGEN is right
You are absolutely right there are two sets of rules in congress Republicans are expected to stick to the guide lines and treat Dimocrats as they would like to be treated and if they dont the liberal media will rip them a new one and they are expected to stand and look down at the floor and take it, the Dimocrats on the other hand are expected to lie and never pay taxes, they are not expected to copmpromise with republicans, only to say they will and to collect news news clipings praising their actions dealing with the Ripublicans and the republicans are expected to accept these rules with no exception.

stimulus and inflation
It's my hope that Republicans will not allow their support to be "bought" by earmark goodies, or token tax cuts. This bill has now grown to $900 billion in the senate, including fat grant to the NIH.... just more no-growth programs. Look, the smoking Fed printing presses will be our undoing. Those of us who have managed to salvage a few dimes after the market crash and taxes, will have that wiped out by the inevitable hyper inflation. A still bloated "stimulus" WILL pass... we will be bankrupt, indebt, and still have not addressed the looming Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid disasters. With what will we fight those? What happens when US debt is downgraded? What happen when the USD really crashes. This downward spiral has only just begun, and no one on the Hill has either the competence or guts to stop the slide. My grandchildren will inherit a hobbled, weakened, utterly indebted, welfare state. Entrepreneurs, investment capital, along with the best and brightest, will have fled. It's a cryin' shame.

No We Can't Is Now America's Motto
It's amazes me that the politicians who promote fraudulent laws under the guise of charitable for the American people aren't held accountable by being tried for crimes rather than "mistakes," or "hiccups," or "debatable proposals," knowingly and willingly and with the intent of robbing the American taxpayers or the world in order to push forward a global agenda called the New World order which can only be created if there is an Old World Distorder created by economic bankrupt banks; joblessness; poverty; and diseases that bring nations to their knees so they welcome in the New World Order. Thank you, but no thank you. Oppose the Obama Stimulus PORK BELLY Bill that
provides very little for small businesses to expand and create jobs or maintain jobs, but pays off a lot of supporters at the expense of the American people and the world who depend upon our strong economic stability. Shame on them!

STMULUS RHETORIC !!!
THE "HEART" OF THE FRAUDULENT STMULUS PACKAGE OFFERED BY PELOSI AND COHORTS IS FRAUD !!

BOTH PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES PROMISED US, " NO MORE EARMARKS" !!! IT WAS A LIE. THE AUDACITY OF PELOSI AND COHORTS TO-------SLIP THIS BY US, IS UNBELIEVEABLE. Stop This Disaster
Thieves & Incompetents 'R Us - This is the banner which should be hung in the halls of congress if this bill passes. If it does, it is the end of the America put in place by our founding fathers. STAND UP AMERICA and stop this budding disaster!

Dead Ideas
I guess a theory can be proclaimed truly dead when faithful adherence to its tenets yield absurd conclusions. In the last few weeks I've heard the following:

* “We have real people out of work right now.” - Rep. Jack Kingston (R-GA), attacking the idea of using $50 million of the stimulus to create jobs in the arts
* "[G]overnment doesn't create jobs. .....Not in the history of mankind has the government ever created a job." - RNC Chairman Michael Steele
* "Government doesn’t create value; it takes it from us as taxes" - Ken Blackwell, running for RNC chair (I heard Mitch McConnell say the same thing though I can't find the quote)

So, a government job isn't a job. Artists aren't people. And a bridge has no value. Apparently, rigid conservative ideology has rendered conservative thought an exercise in absurdity.

When the CIDC does the primary research behind new drugs later marketed by pharmaceutical companies, it creates value. When direct and indirect government spending got the internet off the ground, value was created that private companies built on. Without public spending, there would be few if any professional sports teams. To say that a private road adds value, but a government road does not, is absurd. Yes, dear, fighting in Iraq is a job.

Government creates value. Much of the value added by private companies is possible only because of the foundational value government provides. I've been an entrepreneur and have co-founded two small businesses (under $10 million). We wouldn't have existed if not for core services, like education and physical infrastructure, provided by the government.

These rigid, simplistic conservative ideas have died. They are dead weight threatening to drown the nation.
