Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Recently, an attendant on my United Airlines flight drew groans when she announced that the price of our in-flight meal had gone up. Her captive audience would have to pay $7 instead of $5 for a box lunch with soft drinks and coffee.

Still, those of us in the air were better off than those who have their meals catered by the U.S. Senate restaurant. There, a simple sandwich and chips commands a hefty $11.50. Of course, that includes coffee or tea. Good thing, too, since a gallon of brewed coffee costs $26. And you thought $4 gasoline was expensive!

Apparently even those prices aren’t high enough. “In fiscal year 2007, the restaurants lost $1.3 million, and we could easily see losses topping $2 million this year,” the chief clerk of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee warned in a recent e-mail. “The prices for food and other items may need to be increased at least 25 percent.”

This isn’t a new development. “Since 1993, losses have averaged over $900,000 annually, and taxpayers have been required to provide $18.1 million in operational subsidies,” the clerk wrote. That means taxpayers have bought a lot of sandwiches over the years -- ones they couldn’t even enjoy.

Of course, the Senate isn’t alone. Other government-supported businesses also lose money selling food. The General Accounting Office reports that in 2003 Amtrak lost $80 million on food. Yet the actual cost to taxpayers may be much higher. As Heritage Foundation transportation specialist Ronald Utt wrote last year, “Amtrak spends another $50 million annually to operate and maintain its dining, snack and lounge cars.” That’s over-and-above what it loses on food.

Our government could save us a lot of money by simply getting out of the restaurant business. And, as this column was going to press, the Senate finally voted to privatize its restaurants. “There are parts of government that can be run like a business and should be run like businesses,” Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., explained. That’s certainly true but, unfortunately, Amtrak remains a financial black hole.

But never fear: The same people who have been losing our money in government-restauranteuring are confident they’ll do a much better job handling the even more demanding energy business.

During recent hearings on Capitol Hill, Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., gave oil company executives a piece of her mind: “This liberal will be all about socializing, uh, uh ... would be about ... basically taking over and the government running all of your companies.” This isn’t merely a pipe dream.

Senators recently debated a bill (Lieberman-Warner) that would have effectively given Washington control of our nation’s energy supply. In order to reduce carbon-dioxide emissions, the federal government would have decided which companies could produce energy. In short, it would have adopted Waters’ solution and given the government virtual control of energy production.

Would bureaucrats do a better job developing energy sources?

Yes, oil companies are indeed making big money. They’re also paying out plenty in taxes. Exxon Mobil paid $9.3 billion in worldwide taxes in the first quarter of this year. That’s an astounding 49 percent of its first-quarter gross income. (Full disclosure: Some oil companies have contributed to The Heritage Foundation. Their combined donations last year accounted for a paltry one-quarter of 1 percent of our revenues.)

Oil companies make big money by doing the increasingly hard work of getting petroleum out of the ground and turning it into gasoline, something everybody wants. The government, meanwhile, manages to lose money selling something else everybody wants -- food.

Federal policies already make food and energy far more expensive than need be. That’s one reason United Airlines had to hike the price of its lunches. Any new federal scheme to further regulate our energy production would simply make matters worse.

domestic resources
Yes, and while our government plays games with our future, China is drilling for oil 60 miles off of the Florida coast while we can't.

We're competing with other countries for resources and the rules of the game aren't applied evenly. Unless we develop our own resources, we will lose.

McCain = Disaster / Obama = Death Wish
Subject: McCain = Disaster / Obama = Death Wish
Or the proverbial "between a rock and a hard place".. and, "frankly my dear, I don't give a damn"!
Every people have the government they deserve and America is no exception.
Our current youth (and most politicians) are, by far, among the most screwed up in the world and, by international standards, dumb too. Thank you trial lawyers, you won!

Another failure
The Senate Restaurant is just one more demonstration of why socialism fails. Still after failure heaped upon failure the socialists think they can succeed with just one more try.

Yes let them take over the oil companies in the U.S. You will be back to the long lines on alternate days at the gas pumps where you will be allowed to buy a few gallons of gas at $10.00/gal. That is everyone except the politicians.

Good Old Days
I remember when you actually got a meal on the flight. Actually you got a menu and could choose what you wanted. Those days are long gone.
As for comments from Maxine Waters, please.
Now we are supposed to save a restaurant. Senator Boxer your state is falling apart, do you care?

US Gov. Takes Over
When anyone talks of the government tacking over private business such as energy or health care I respond by asking if they would like to have their surgery done at the DMV.

Let's get this straight
1. Put a hammer on a step ladder, lift the ladder to move it, get hit in the head by the hammer. 2.Rub your head, pick up the hammer. 1.place it on the step ladder again. lift the ladder to move it, get hit in the head by the hammer again. 2.Rub your head, pick up the hammer. Repeat #1 and #2 again and expect different results.
OK, let's let government run the oil companies like they ran restaurants and expect different results. Gooood Democrats.

Dan,
I ask them if they would want the government running supermarkets. I ask them to picture in their minds a government-run supermarket--empty shelves, fatty meat, dirty floors, broken carts, surly checkers, looooong lines, etc.

All the people complaining about
the Senate Rest having high priced and tasteless food should consider tghemselves lucky they haven't been poisoned.

Make her stop
Maxine Waters cannot afford to be passing out pieces of her mind. There just isn't that much left.

Pipe Dream
Sorry fellas, even if we started drilling like crazy, oil prices would only dip slightly. Not only are we paying the high prices but so is the rest of the world. Do you not think that our beloved oil companies would not hesitate to take the oil from our federal lands and then sell it on the open market to the highest bidder? Why should they get the oil for free from Federal lands and get to sell it for the same price (which they will do) as if they bought it from Canada or Mexico? And does nobody else feel like they are kicking us while we are down? I understand that they are in it for profits but gas is hitting new record prices weekly and they are rolling in the dough. They could give us a bit of a break and knock a few cents off. Sorry, but oil is not going down and we are all going to see a large negative bump in our lifestyles. Oh, yeah, Maxine Waters is the dimmest bulb in Congress, she makes Arlen Specter seem like a genius. Good day to all, hope we vote all of them out very soon.

DRILL DRILL DRILL
Although CVN has some points, he is forgetting a couple of positives. First, this work will be performed in the US. This means jobs. Second, having oil within the borders means faster access to the source at lower distribution costs. That will have some effect on price. Third, the byproducts of oil are used in plastics, fertilizers, etc. More factories will be constructed to make these products. (Alot of these are built near the sources) More jobs. Finally, our dollar will strenghten again. Lower prices for oil and gas. That is the truth.
DRILL, DRILL, DRILL
Vote out the Democrats!!!

Socialism
There was a time when someone in government talking about taking over a whole industry would have gotten them labeled a pinko communist and they would have been run out of office. Democrats are spewing all kinds of socialist agenda but no one seems to be calling it what it is. Socialism. I want government out of everything except what the U.S. Constitution specifically says is within their power and responsibility. They have proven again and again that the private sector can do everything better than government. You like standing in line at the DMV? You like dealing with the IRS? Welcome to government health care and government energy regulation.

Ham sandwiches...
The guys who can't even make money selling ham sandwiches, potato chips, and sodas to a captive and hungry workforce of Senate clerks (you know the Senators themselves would not stoop to dine with the plebians) are the guys who are now setting up designs to save the world from global warming and revamp the energy delivery and consumption system of the entire planet.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I'm telling you, it's time.

A tax revolt and marches on the halls of government by at least 10 million patriots will do it.

Your Obedient Servant,

George Washington

pink(o) is the new red
People continue to believe in Santa Claus and that has been personified by the far left and now government.

It is the bad ol' oil companies that make gasoline expensive. It is those bad ol' banks and mortgage companies that forced people to default on their loan.

Vote for me and I will say mean things to these bad men. I will yell at them and tell them to leave you alone. If these bad men don't listen and share nicely, I will take it away from them and I will give it to you. Because it is nice to be nice and it is bad to be mean.

Why do people fall for this stuff. It is like mommy with a labotome.

When (if ever) will they tell the victim nation that we have become that responsibility starts with you. Empower everyone to take care of themselves.

We have become a feminized nation of softies that have to take a valium and self esteem sessions every time we are offended.
