Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

In the mid-1950s, French educator Jacques Barzun said, "Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America had better learn baseball." He correctly recognized the sport as a cultural touchstone that united us.

Half a century later, finding a tie that binds us as a nation is a little tougher. So let's go back to basics. How about the English language?

This probably seems like common sense. After all, English is already universal. It's not only spoken by an overwhelming number of Americans, it's understood by hundreds of millions worldwide. It's the language of aviation, and thus international commerce, as well as the default language of the Internet. Everyone, from stock traders in New York to software designers in Mumbai, uses English to conduct business.

But instead of using the power of our native tongue to unite the country, our official policy has been to balkanize the United States.

Executive Order 13166, issued by Bill Clinton in the summer before he left office, mandates that any group that receives any federal funding must provide its services in any foreign language that may be spoken by someone likely to receive those services. So instead of having one official language, in practice we have dozens.

Predictably, this leads to problems. As David Leahy, the election supervisor for Miami-Dade County, told PBS in 2001, "We print every ballot in Spanish, English and some ballots in Creole." So much for the idea that an election should promote national unity. No wonder we sometimes have problems figuring out who won.

Enough. It's time for a new approach, one that unites all Americans instead of dividing them -- and one that stops putting the children of immigrants at an economic disadvantage. English should be our official language. This can, and in fact must, start in our schools. And we've already taken an important step.

When President Bush signed "No Child Left Behind," he changed the way non-English speaking students were taught. Before 2002, the federal government simply paid for services and projects carried out by states and local school districts. That sort of system made it difficult to track results. Continued...

*** "Live with it
Multiculturalism makes America stronger. We don't have to be a blueblood nation where everyone is the same as everyone else." ***

In what sense? America is strong because of the integration of many cultures into the American culture. Not the separation of cultures. We are not all the same. We all have our own heritage. However, we are first and foremost United States citizens.

You are doing a disservice to non-English speakers by discouraging their assimilation. Not learning the English language nor assimilating relegates them to limited opportunities and second-class status.

How are these people going to get ahead in this country when colleges and universities teach in English? Even if a precious few get an education elsewhere in their own language, aren't they hamstrung by only having opportunities where there are significant quantities of people who speak their native language?

*** "In 1760, the British conquered French speaking Quebec and they still speak French there." ***

Yes, and there is still a segment of the Quebecois (residents of Quebec) who have been pushing for succession for _years_. Do you want that here?

*** "In 1848, the Americans conquered the northern third of Spanish speaking Mexico, land that has become the states of Arizona, New Mexico, and California (approximately, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexican_Cession ). Many people there still speak Spanish." ***

Yes, we conquered it and it is now part of the US. We are not morally required to suppress our culture in favor of another just because we conquered it in the relatively recent past. Equally, we are not going to force the Spanish speaking inhabitants to give up their language and culture.

If they wish to get the maximum benefit of the US, they need to speak English. That's just the way it is.

*** "Do you see this as a threat? Are you insulted that you can walk into a restaurant in LA where the staff doesn't speak English? Tough. It's a free country." ***

I am not insulted if I am in a restaurant or any other establishment where they speak another language. It's their right. Double tough back at you :-). I may choose to go elsewhere if it is too difficult for me to conduct business. That is not cultural discrimination, just a matter of convenience.

Is it a threat? Mostly no.

I see people who are purposely limiting their ability to get ahead. That is not a threat. To me, that is sad. That is a waste of talent. However, that is their choice.

It is not a threat that we spend massive amounts of money to provide duplicate services in multiple languages. However, it is a waste of money that I resent.

However, it is a long-term threat to the stability of our country if illegal immigrants who do not assimilate into our culture nor have allegiance to the United States grow in enough numbers to dominate the culture. This can happen through lack of immigration enforcement, amnesty programs or families gaining residency due to US born babies. What does that mean? The American culture is suppressed or displaced. It will become a source of conflict.

Do "multiculturalists" view themselves as more enlightened or more tolerant than the rest of us? Have they thought through the consequences of their beliefs? I'll let you decide.

Unbelievable
I must confess, I find it incredible that people advocate for people NOT learning English in America. Like it or not, that IS the language of this country. Most of the immigrants understand the need for their children to learn the language; the children will not advance as far if they continue to speak in their native language. As has been suggested, it does seem that some people wish to keep people poor for political gain.

I have a daughter who is currently in Italy. She is learning the language because if you do not speak Italian, you will have communication difficulties. I am appalled at those who do not think it is important for immigrants to learn the language. If they want to come here and be Americans, learning the language is the least they can do. If they want to speak their native language at home and among themselves, fine, but they should not expect the rest of the country to learn their language.
