What I Saw at the Rotunda

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

I was at the Rotunda at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, June 3, for the dedication of the statue to President Ronald Reagan. I was there because Bill Clark was there. Judge Clark, as readers of my material know, was Reagan’s closest and most important adviser.

Clark is 77 years old. His wife, Joan, died a few weeks ago. He was invited to the ceremony by the good folks at the Reagan Presidential Foundation. He made a rare trip to Washington, flying from San Francisco late the previous night, in a wheelchair.

*** Special Offer ***

Clark sat in the front row, where he was a magnet for current political luminaries and old Reaganites. They all came over to shake his hand: Peggy Noonan, Bob Michel, Denny Hastert, Michael Steele, John McCain, Chas Fagan—the sculptor of the statue. McCain made a beeline for Clark, with cameras clicking upon the two.

The ceremony began with a wonderful invocation by Rev. Barry Black, Senate chaplain, who hit the prayerful themes Reagan himself fondly invoked when waxing eloquent about America—about that Shining City on a Hill. Among those providing remarks, Congressman John Boehner and Senator Mitch McConnell—the Republican leaders in Congress—were excellent. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, aside from a foolish statement on “stem cell research,” was gracious in her “respect, esteem, and admiration” of President Reagan.

It was a moving event, especially with Nancy Reagan’s presence. Frail, small in size but large in stature, she was no longer the walking dartboard that “journalists” once joyously harpooned. They now treated her like an elder stateswoman, a kind of political royalty—America’s preeminent former first lady. The loudest applause was directed at Nancy.

For me, however, the crowning touch came before Nancy spoke, and before the statue unveiling. It was the sole musical selection for the program: the U.S. Army Chorus singing, a cappella, “America, the Beautiful.”

This love-song for the nation captivated the room. It was beautiful. I caught a camerawoman struggling to hold up her long-lens as she wiped tears flowing down her face.

But what struck me was the perfect choice of that patriotic hymn, unwittingly tying together not only the thoughts of Rev. Black and others, but the origins, ends, and legacy that was Ronald Reagan’s career. Indeed, lost to the innumerable books, articles, documentaries and recollections of Reagan is the significance of this particular anthem.

Specifically, it was way back in the summer of 1952 that Ronald Reagan, an actor transitioning from Democrat to Republican, effectively launched his crusade with a commencement speech at a tiny women’s college in the Midwest. The place was William Woods College, in Fulton, Missouri—the same town where Winston Churchill had warned that a Soviet “iron curtain” was closing across Europe.

It was June 2, 1952. Reagan eagerly arrived with a vibrant, pregnant Nancy. The ceremony opened with a rendition of “America, the Beautiful.”

At 10:00 AM, the movie star addressed the 100 soon-to-be graduates. He told them that America is “less of a place than an idea.” It is an idea, he said, that resided deep in the souls of men. Reagan cast this idea against the darkness of the atheistic, murderous communist menace that resided in Moscow, which, sadly, was really nothing new. Said Reagan:

[The idea of America] is nothing but the inherent love of freedom in each one of us, and the great ideological struggle that we find ourselves engaged in today is not a new struggle. It’s the same old battle. We met it under the name of Hitlerism; we met it under the name of Kaiserism; and we have met it back through the ages in the name of every conqueror that has ever set upon a course of establishing his rule over mankind. It is simply the idea, the basis of this country and of our religion, the idea of the dignity of man, the idea that deep within the heart of each one of us is something so God-like and precious that no individual or group has a right to impose his or its will upon the people.

Then came what I believe was Reagan’s first public foray in openly speaking of America as a divinely chosen nation:

I, in my own mind, have thought of America as a place in the divine scheme of things that was set aside as a promised land…. I believe that God in shedding his grace on this country has always in this divine scheme of things kept an eye on our land and guided it as a promised land.

This Reagan thought became a theme—and a call—for five decades. He closed by issuing a challenge to the young women—to join him in the epic “battle” against “totalitarian darkness” that confronted their nation. He asked that each of them “contribute a little light,” that each “strike a match,” to “help push back the darkness” facing humanity.

“[W]ith your help,” the future president urged, “I am sure we can come much closer to realizing that this land of ours is the last best hope of man on earth. God bless you.”

Thirty years later, in the 1980s, President Ronald Reagan ignited the match that would burn down the Iron Curtain.

The title of Reagan’s talk in Fulton, Missouri that day in June 1952?

America, the Beautiful.”

That was how Ronald Reagan saw America, its place in the world and in history. Its rendezvous with destiny now rests with those in that Rotunda and all across the fruited plain. It is their challenge today to pick up the torch, strike a match, and ensure America shines amid the darkness of humanity, that it remains a Shining City on a Hill.

I wonder who?
When Ronald Reagan was President, the mockery and plain hatred from the Left were almost palpable, like a poisonous fog. What business did this "mere actor" have holding up his vision of a shining city on a hill when everyone in the know saw America as a corrupt, imperialistic blight on the world scene? The man was such an obvious fool with his folksy, friendly manner with the press and his infatuation with the military and his fake "family values" (he was by gum DIVORCED!! after all).

I wonder who will be the next great GOP leader, willing to take that level of abuse and perhaps even worse, keep his sense of humor and love of country and optimism about the future and largeness of spirit, and bring the US back to its best self after President Obama has completed his work, whatever its results.

the end of an era
or the dawn of re-awakening? On the precipice of freedom's destruction, thinking Americans - wise to both the aims and the methods of freedom's destroyers -- pause to consider where we go from here.

In Ronald Reagan we have our standard against whom all "conservative" comers must be measured.

What I loved about him was the fact that Reagan's conservativism was tried and tested; it was no politically expedient costume, to wear only when he sought elected office. It was, rather, who he was.

Heaven help us from the politically ambitious and ideologically vapid pseudo-conservative.

When Reagan was President
I remember him as a cheerful, optimistic but tough leader. After his first Inauguration and Iran's subsequent and immediate release of our hostages I never felt as though I had to wonder what the next day would bring; like a well-oiled machine, his leadership was hardly noticeable (that is, he wasn't constantly blowing his own horn) unless circumstances dictated otherwise. He largely kept out of things, but you just knew he'd get tough if he had to. I still remember the day he fired the PATCO people.

Contrast that with our current TOTUS. He is a ham-handed punk who can't even say good morning to his wife without the aid of a teleprompter, thinks he is king of the world, hasn't a clue about diplomatic protocol, thinks that everyone loves us now that he is in charge, and believes that being a leader means having as much control over the free market as possible, by threat if not by persuasion. There's a feeling of uncertainty and unease among us that I don't remember ever having felt before.

We can't go back, but I'm not seeing anyone even remotely like Reagan coming up through the ranks.

Fitting Commentary

Against the backdrop of ever hardening soft tyranny, Reagan's words and deeds carry even more weight now than in years past.

The shining city on the hill indeed. He is our beacon of hope in a sea of progressive madness.

How fitting
How fitting that it is this time that the Reagan statue is unveiled to remind us of who we were just a few short years ago. What a different landscape we see today with people afraid of what the next scheme of the government will be. The difference between a Reagan speech and an Obama speech is profound, as profound a difference as their policies.
You're right Joel, we now have our king. And I believe his end will be as much a failure as King Saul.
I pray for an awakening for this nation. An awakening to righteousness. An awakening to our roots of reliance on God and not on government.

D-Day, Reagan, And The US Army

A British veteran of D-Day once remarked that he knew when he left his transfer ship that he would return to England one of three ways: dead, injured, or victorious.

Our fight with Islamofascism is no less dire, in terms of the survival of Western Civilization and the furtherance of democracy. Further, with our weakened economy, they are more likely to take advantage of it and strike here, again.

Watch Reagan's speech at Pointe du Hoc on the 40th anniversary of D-Day here:

http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/ronaldreaganddayad dress.html

And, read his speech of the same day given at Omaha Beach here:

http://www.strategypage.com/respect/articles/reagan_omaha_b each.asp

And, see Army's video (8:35 minutes) commemorating D-Day here:

http://www.army.mil/d-day/

Better Than the D-Day Celebration
I read that they played the Kate Smith-Irving Berlin abomination "God Bless America" at this year's D-Day celebration. When I was in grade school we sang "My Country Tis of Thee", "America The Beautiful" and the rousing "Columbia, The Gem of The Ocean". All were true American patriotic songs seldom heard today.

What this nation could use.

We certainly could use more Ronald Reagans and less Barack Obamas.

Oppose all O programs

Cheney’s numbers are rising because he is countering the left's favorite lies.

Write Cong. and tell Reps. to keep being the party of NO.

You NOW own GM and Chrysler through gov't debt and stupidity.

O is not only not smart but also he is a fool. A bad combination. Fight back.

Go to tea parties. See teapartypatriots.com and find a march of the 4th of July.

Shine losing it's luster?
They certainly don't make men of this caliber anymore.

Let your representatives know...
Where are are the people who were elected to represent me and millions more like me? There seems to be only a FEW willing to stand up and speak out against the evil being perpetrated by Obamab and his cohorts. Where are my representatives who have not been silenced by fear? Where are my representatives who have a spine? The America our founders established is rapidly being dismantled. We will soon be SLAVES to a brutal and illegitimate GOVERNMENT. This is not what we're about. Who of my representatives will be a voice for AMERICA, for her people, for her FUTURE? So many have their heads in the sand, laying down and rolling over, allowing this current regime to run rampant. If our representatives will not stand up, we must. If we must to down, let us go down kicking and screaming!

When History is Written . . .
When the history of our nation is written it will be obvious to all who know what has made America great, Ronald Reagan's name will shine out above all the others as our greatest president. This will happen -- in spite of the fact that our univrsities are dominated by socialists and communists -- and in spite of the socialist sympathizers who dominate the major media outlets (TV, newspapers, and magazines) in our country.

All the politicians in Washington had better wake up to the importance of representing the interests of their constituencies rather than their own interests. The tea parties is the forerunner to what is yet to be. Hopefully America will wake up and correct the direction our country is heading before it is too late. We need a spiritual remewal of the first magnitude.

Old Prof
Your the perfect example of the great contributors of the dumbing down of America in the guilded halls of academia.

A Reagan Standard-Bearer
I miss Ronald Reagan. I long for a standard-bearer who will carry on the Reagan legacy. At such a time as this, we need Reagan's leadership, strength of character, vision for our country, LOVE for our country.

Even TODAY???

A few minutes ago, Obama said that America was not always just and fair in WWII.

Can he EVER stop apologizing?

Mimi!
Please PROOFREAD before posting! Especially when slamming old professors!

You're, not your

Contributors to, not contributors of

Gilded, not guilded.

I'm afraid, after teaching developmental English, composition 1 and 2, American lit, British lit, world lit, science fiction, creative writing, business writing, technical writing, history of Judaism, history of Christianity, world religions, art appreciation, intro to philosophy, and Shakespeare for the past 42 years, I have grown a little intolerant of blatant solecisms, mechanical errors and bad diction.

Sorry, dear, I got carried away there. I'll try to be nicer in the future.

Old Prof
You got the message and it got your ire up. Good! You and your buds are still part of the education problem.

Mimi!
Just a thought--I hope you realize that all the negative things I said about Reagan were characterizing the Left's reaction to him, not my reaction. I was his enthusiastic supporter.

Great Post Dr. Kengor
Reagan was President when my son was born. He is now 23. Alas, now he has Obama-nation to look forward to through his adult years. He will not have the privilege of working and growing as a man in a country that was once great but in a country that is in great decline.

I intend to do all that I can before I take my last breadth on this earth to change that.

I pray God is not fed up with us and that His grace is still upon us.

Astroboy

You want to talk about campaigns talking with the "enemy"? How about the Obama campaign talking to the Iraqi government in an effort to get Iraq NOT to sign the US-Iraq Agreement under the Bush Administration?

Conservatives on the faculty
I don't think we conservatives can be much of a problem in education. There are too few of us to make any difference.

You see, we turn ourselves into academic pariahs. For example, we keep insisting that students shape up, write acceptably, learn to recognize facts as opposed to inferences and judgments, read Marxist writers with a critical eye as opposed to adulation, ask of idealistic programs such inconvenient questions as "At what cost?" and generally annoy the majority with our grouchy nonconformity.

Ms. Reagan
is certainly due respect and it is nice to see she is generally getting it. Let's not forget that President Obama felt no qualms about making fun of her, though.

Astroboy108

Actually Iran-Contra was much to do about nothing.

Think about it. Our Liberal congress voted to make it illegal to fund the spread of communism in Central America. Reagan and that "Great American" Ollie North got the Iranians to fund a war in Central America against Communists.

Abosolutely Brilliant!!! Did not cost the U.S. Taxpayers a dime.

Liberals were outraged. How dare Ronald Reagan resist the spread of communism against their wishes?

Liberals were also outraged because no one person was convicted of violating the Boland Amendment the bogus law that supposely everyone violated.

Only Liberals would pass a law making the struggle for freedom illegal.

The end result was 40 million Central American now enjoy Freedom thanks to the efforts of Ronald Reagan and Ollie North.

Liberals will never forgive Ronald Reagan for opposing communism.

Old Prof
Why ask students to read Marxist material? There are plenty of other worthwhile ways to spend time. I was in college during the l960's and that was never assigned reading.

America the Beautiful
Thank you, Dr. Kengor for your observations. This article choked me with tears, it's meaning for today so articulate. I can never play or sing this magnificent hymn with anything but reverence. It is hard though to not feel as though we are standing at the bed side of a precious loved one watching them slowly pass. But I will continue to shine for God and country.

Mimi on Marxist material
How does one KEEP them from reading Marxist material if they read at all? At least 85% of journalists and a great many literary figures fit the Marxist mold to one degree or another.

Anyway, the promotion of non-Marxist ideas (as opposed to those the Current Occupant of the White House is pushing hard for) can sometimes be fostered best by way of contrast, including contrast with the actual writings of Marx himself, whose predictions did not come true and whose works were used as justification for the murder of 20 million Russians by Stalin and possibly 75 million Chinese by Mao.

Yet Marx is revered by professors everywhere, and the worship of him shows no sign of ceasing.

Oldprof

As a parent of a college student I disagree. You can't grow a tree without first planting a seed.

Old Prof
Here we go again. Academia is a great part of the problem in America.

isms
In President Reagan's speech, Mr. Kengor quoted Reagan talking about the various forms of enemies to freedom..Hitlerism, Kaiserism; and those who would be conquerors thru the ages. Now we have Obamaism. Pity that President Reagan's Americanism has been overshadowed by those would will destroy our nation.

old prof
I was an adjunct professor for many years in my area of speciality. I was the only non-Marxist in the Social Science faculty. Oddly enough, despite sterling evaluations and education, I was never invited to take a full time position. Did I offend in some way? Could it be my breath?

Old Prof
I know the hell you must face on campus being a conservative outnumbered by liberals 9 - 1 and I know it takes guts to risk your academic standing - and possibly, your career - by holding firm to your principles. I just wish I'd had a few more professors like you back in college.

I hope you'll forgive mimi. It appears that she understands the danger that our overwhelmingly Marxist college instructors present to our country, but she doesn't seem to understand that there are a few conservatives on campus whose integrity will not allow them to knuckle under. With all due respect to her, it looks as if mimi's heart is in the right place, but her intellect is a step or two behind.

Please forgive the inarticulaty (is that a word?). I was an engineering student!

Thank you so much, Mr. Kengor
I am refreshed in my mind when I read Reagan's America The Beautiful speech. I made a copy that I can read and be inspired by as I try to lift up my country!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!

What a stark contrast to the negative attributes expressed in the Obama speeches. I couldn't get over it---how refreshing and uplifting to read a speech from a great American, President Reagan, someone who LOVED this land and its people. I see that as one of the main differences between patriots like Reagan, and the destructive Marxist ideologues like Obama.

Obama appears to barely be able to stand us!! I wouldn't be surprised to see him walking around in the White House holding his nose.

I guess I didn't realize how the negative and harsh words of Obama are helping to dim the light-- and to even try to put it completely out---in the hearts and minds of the American people.

We who LOVE this country must do all that we can to remind ourselves that America is beautiful. We must be diligent in keeping internal invaders from succeeding in their totalitarian goals.

Online American Grand Jury--- Join us to save this country, this shining city on a hill....Do not let Obama , the usurper, destroy America.

http://americangrandjury.org

To quote President Reagan:
"...With your help, I am sure we can come much closer to realizing that this land of ours is the last best hope of man on earth. God Bless you." this IS a Christian nation and we must never forget it!!

PATCO!
Wonderful column. Observation: President Reagan set the tone of his presidency when he civilly and definitively handled the PATCO strike. Thank God for President Reagan.

True Conservatives realize that our passion is embedded in our original Constitution, not in any mortal man or woman. President Reagan's spirit calls each of us to reach inside ourselves and, with civility, definitively stand up for freedom, liberty, and most pressingly the right to live free of government ownership of the means of production and government confiscation of individuals' savings by inflating the money supply through debt. I do not seek another Ronald Reagan (he was a one-of-a-kind). Rather, an electorate that finally wakes up will turn the tide far better than any charismatic president--no matter how messianic he may think himself.

Let's each find his or her own individual internal "Ronald Reagan" and sally forth with smiles on our faces -- just like he did -- as captured in that statue.

Marxist influence
I think the world would be a better place if we spent more time watching Groucho and the brothers.

Astroboy108

Actually not one person from the Reagan Adminstration was ever arrested, charged or convicted of violating the Boland Admendment.

But many people who watch MSNBC believe they were.

So you see just because the Liberal media may tell you Iran Contra was against the law does not mean anyone violated the law. In fact no laws were broken.

But you are free to believe whatever MSNBC tells you.

Obviously the MSM
didn't notice the unveiling because Obama was out of the country.

Robert in AZ
I feel a lot of empathy for that experience of yours. i've had full time faculty status at three colleges over the past 42 years--two in IL and one in TX, with tenure practically forever, and I suspect it has been nothing more than good fortune (if perpetual semi-poverty is good fortune).

Good people are continually turned down for employment b/c they don't make the right socialist noises.

There aren't quite as many Marxists in Texas as in some other places, but I could still show you a pretty passel of 'em, as we say around here. A fellow conservative who is a little more blunt and a lot more aggressive than I am, says, "I like them thar Marxists. They taste like chicken!"

Reagan
We will probably never have a president like Ronald Reagan again. He was not perfect, but he loved this country.

He didn't go overseas and bad mouth America. He didn't apologize for the USA. He didn't bow or cater to our enemies.

Pres. Reagan is my hero
I am a Hungarian refuge of the 1956 vintage when little Hungary deflated the Communist ballon and enjoyed freedom for 11 glorious days. As a result of the uprising the Iron Curtain became porous and I voted with my feet against communism. With President Reagan I had hope again though I could not even dream that his would be the ultimate push that caused the collapse of the Evil Empire and freed the captive (and conveniently fotgotten)nations of Central-Eastern Europe. He is one the great, if not the greatest, US president of the 20th century no matter what the liberal media and collage campuses think. Tha Marxist-Leninist philosophy is aginst normal human nature; it is just the play book on how to grab and retain power.

mike
Amen! Agree wholeheartedly! The world needs classic zaniness FAR more than it needs gray humorless socialism.

Have you seen the novel Madder Music by Peter DeVries? It's about a guy who, as a result of some traumatic experiences, retreats into the role of Groucho Marx. He takes on all the mannerisms, and they are wonderfully described.

AliveinHim
"We can's go back, but I'm not seeing anyone even remotely like Reagan coming up through the ranks."

Probably not. However, at this time we cannot afford to wait for another Reagan, i.e. someone that we would vote FOR. We need to be aroused to vote AGAINST Obama. President Reagan believed that the love of freedom that resides in individuals is at the root of the American dream. It is my hope that longing will ignite the spark that will cause revolt at the ballot box.

Given our nation's history of liberating others from tyranny, it is time to stand up and liberate ourselves from the tyranny of Obamaism.
Our love for freedom must guide us and motivate us, even if there isn't another Reagan on the horizon.

VOTE ALL INCUMBENTS...OUT!
POWER and CORRUPTION is the ONLY knowledge the professional, political parasites in Washington, D.C. have.

It does not matter which of these parties is in office...it is the same old BS from one to the other and the Americans get screwed by both parties.

THE TEA PARTIES ACROSS OUR GREAT COUNTRY brewed up the "CONSTITUTION PARTY" with a 'platform' straight out of our Constitution, our Bill of Rights and our Declaration of Independence!

Enough said: http://www.constitutionparty.com

College and our Young
The problem is that our young (old enough to vote) do not love America like they should. How did this happen? College campuses are crawling with liberal students. My son will leave for college this fall and we could not find a college that was not largely liberal. We took our son to many freedom events, 4th of July events, independence events and he saw us wipe tears away and he asked why. We explained how freedom isn't free and how many lost their lives so that we could do what we do--life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I wonder -- how many parents did not do that? Is that why our college students do not love America the way our son does? Please, do not tell me a young person loves America and wanted BHO to be the leader of it -- the two just do not go together! Further, if BHO felt that we admired him, he'd be making speeches in this country instead of going to Cairo and bashing us and not giving the US credit for all of the people we've helped and brought to freedom. This man is a joke -- has anyone noticed how he talks about his great uncle being at D-Day -- any mention of his name? How does he know this when he can't even find a real copy of his birth certificate?

President Reagan
is the greatest President of my life time (baby boomer)a great American he made me proud to be an American and came at a time when he was needed. If he were only here today.

Barbara
I echo your sentiments. A fine article it is, and so are your comments!

Thanks for the link to 'American Grand Jury' I'll be looking into it.

hagar et al: President Reagan may have

been one of the greatest Presidents of my life time (baby boomer too) but there is no question that he was the most loved.

And your right, Reagan came at a time when he was needed. Today however, we need someone whose love of our country is just as great as was Reagan's...

Today we need someone whose has a vision just as great as was Reagan's.

The question is who???

Oldprof
I must say you are a breath of fresh air on Townhall. We've been, unfortunately, plagued with Liberal/Marxists who claim to be Dr's or Professors and use this site to spew their anti-American propaganda!

I applaud you and all Conservatives in academia that stand against the creeping Marxist/Fascism, in defense of our beloved country!

Anne
Not sure they make them anymore. Maybe some of the kids coming out of the military. They seen enough of real life to understand most academics don't have a clue.

Goshawk
Glad you have enjoyed my somewhat muted ranting and raving. Oops! I feel a bit of doggerel coming on. (POP)

I try to state my radical views
In such a way I don't abuse
Those who tend to believe the "news,"
And when I can I try to amuse.

Ahh! that feels better!

Tom Mich
Thanks. That's exactly right OBAMA is using the playbook on how to grab and retain power. That is all this is.

Oldprof
Very good and right on!

Mark Levine plays America the Beautiful
By Ray Charles every Friday on his show. It is my favorite version but there is no bad version because of what it means. Reagan and Ray Charles died about the same time and they replayed Charles playing it at the 84 Republican convention with Reagan looking on.

"God shed his grace on thee."

So many times in our history we've faced temendous odds to even become a nation and now we are upon our gravest. Oblaba is a perfect storm combination of irrespnsible arrogance, elitism, naivete and conceit combined with being black and eloquent and with a band of incompetent boobs in Peloser, Harry Fraud and the other dims promoted by a sycophantic pmm (Propaganda Media Machine aka msm) that are all anti-traditional America. It has to be transformed to meet the real meaning of our Forefathers even though they don't believe in the Forefathers only enough to fool enough voters to get elected.

"And crown thy good with brotherhood"

It is time to come together at Tea Parties and block this bunch to save our country. We will be drowning in debt by 2010 and I don't think they can hide the 12-15% unemployment, high utilities, high food and $5 gas. Add to that hyper-inflation on everything too with high taxes. We have to throw out everyone but true fiscal conservatives and I mean every dim because they can't be trusted. They attacked Bush even when it threatened our troops leaking secrets and they will lie to get elected and go back to following Oblaba. Fourth of July!

July 4th Tea Parties
Is there a better day to honor the legacy of Ronald Reagan than the 4th of July?

That is the day for all of us to show our heartfelt support for conservative values. I am nearing age 63 and this year, more than any other in my life, July 4th has to be the day for true conservatives to stand united. We must come together against the tyranny of the Stealth-Mulatto-Muslim in the White House before there is nothing left to stand for and no one left to stand.

Celebrate with the brewskis, dogs and apple pie on the 3rd or the 5th. If you really care for this great Republic, if you really value conservative strengths stand with your brothers and sisters on July 4th and send a resounding message to the Oppressor-In-Chief in the Offal Office!

If not you, who? If not now, when?

Old Prof
It looks like your posting and my response brought some fruitful replies. We work well as a team to bring the light of day to chaotic socialist views. You made my day!

Mimi
Glad to oblige. I could tell your heart was in the right place. Here's a haiku on supposed conflicts I wrote 16 years ago:

The stone cannot tell
The thrower, nor the wound its bearer,
Their deep connections.

That's sort of my more specialized version of Wm Blake's

To see a world in a grain of sand
And heaven in a wild flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour.

Old Prof
Your haiku and William Blake's are beautiful. I'll be looking for your posts. We should have lunch together. You are quite interesting.

Mimi
I try. With that much encouragement, I'll keep posting. Sometimes it feels futile, but what the heck. A few people have said they had some new thoughts as a result of things I've written. And that's all one whose whole professional life is bound up with words can hope for.

Thanks.

Oh Beautiful
For heros proved in liberating strife

For more than self their country loved

And mercy more than life

Let's never forget their sacrifice. Every year we have Memorial Day and a week later we have the D-Day Remembrance. When we meet on the Fourth let's remember why we're taking our country back.

These guys don't believe in what these brave Americans died for. Oblaba has proven beyond a doubt that this America talk is empty rhetoric. The picture of him not holding his hand over his heart is the real Oblaba. He believes America and Americans are arrogant dominators of the world and its resources. On top of that they've been oppressing their minorities and poor and all the poor countries that they've confronted because America's the bully, see?

Mike re tea parties

You are correct in characterizing true heroes. The whole idea of sacrificing oneself ("Greater love hath no man . . ." said Jesus) seems to be alien to many of our hedonistic young people.

And yet--here's an odd contrast. Among other courses I teach British Literature before 1800, and I encourage students to post on their message board for the class. One of my leading questions solicited their impression of Beowulf, with all points of view encouraged. Last semester the responses were almost overwhelming. "Beowulf gave his life for his people, and because of that he will from now on be the hero against whom I will measure all others," represents a summary of many different responses.

It seems as if it took a story twelve centuries old to awaken their slumbering admiration for real heroism.

I see hope in our youth especially the ones that still believe in God and country. The wisdom displayed by the young soldiers and the determination to fulfill their mission. I mean think about it, none of us old guys saw our country attacked and thousands killed in our youth except internally by a bunch of hippie hooligans like Ayers on a few and the horrible response like LA, Chicago and Kent State.

So their inspiration is so counter to the attempted indoctrination by the left. There are some liberals and Democrats that still cling to the notion that their so-called leaders will return to the center once they've vanquished the Republicans (ends justifies the means). But the truth is finally coming home with Oblaba in 3 short months going full bore with taxes during recession/unemployment, no drilling with gas going up, spending while everyone else suffers and the socialist takeover of banks, industry and medicine.

I know for a fact that there are thousands if not millions of independents and conservative Democrats with buyer's remorse and intend to join conservatives on the Fourth. I hope the glitter wears off this travesty for the youth when their friends give em the facts and they join too.

One Thing For Sure.

The world is a better place today because Ronald W. Wilson was once the President of the United States.

Ronald
baby boomers Reagan also made me feel like a American, he was strong, honest and truely believed in our values and people. The decline of our nations values has been around now since the Vietnam War, when this Progressive, spoil the child culture took hold.

The Team approach is under attack, with the Progressives and now Facist doing all they can to divide and conquer the people.

To see the Messiah play his game with Nancy Reagan gave me the creeps. He took advanatge of wonderful woman and the memory of a real great man.

Well said all OldProf, Texas is the best.. I would like to have a real Texan come to the front.

God Bless America See you on July 4th.

And God bless Him
Dr. Kengor: What a marvelous and fitting tribute to a man who may well have been America's greatest president. He said things that so many of us (I am now 72) hold dear -- about God, about our nation, and the ideas and ideals that came together to create this miracle. I only wish President Obama had many of the same perspectives that our beloved Ronald Reagan had -- just a few would be a precious gain. Obama has no real sense of the history of our country. It almost seems that this is not HIS country. Anyway, you sketched a beautiful, telling portrait of the dear, late president. Thank you. Verne Strickland, Wilmington, NC.

Ronald Reagan was a good and wonderful man. Why must you insist on including such duds as Hasert, McCain and Steele in his legacy. These guys could'nt find the bathroom, much less lead the now defunt republican party to victory. If justice were done, we would sentence the previous mentioned men (hasart, Mccain and steele)to the depth of hell for all eternity. Fortheir attempt at polictical expediency. They have sold our once great into the same statis as Hitlers Germany.

Some of you may scoff,
but there IS a Ronald Reagan in the wings...it's just that she's wearing a dress and high heels. Her name is Sarah Palin. Let's look at the parallels:
1) She, like Reagan, came from humble roots.
2) She, like Reagan, has been scoffed at by the Left and Media for her lack of intelligence (a lie, repeated often enough gets believed by the sheeple).
3) She, like Reagan, did NOT attend an Ivy League University in the northeast.
4) She, like Reagan, believes in individual liberty.
5) She, like Reagan, is the Governor of a state far away from Washington D.C.
6) She, like Reagan, was OPPOSED BY THE ELITES IN THE GOP -- I remember. They didn't want him, they thought he was too "right-wing", and wanted to run their own "moderates" like Gerald Ford (McCain, anyone?).
7) Even Michael Reagan, son of the Great RR, sees his father in Sarah Palin.

Don't count her out, folks. There are over 500,000 members of her Facebook page, and 70,000 on Team Sarah. She's the one who we've wanted, and she's still around to prove it.

Also, like Reagan, she's as funny as anyone on Comedy Central, despite being serious about standing up for conservative principles. Her delivery of good comic lines is spot on.

I fear for any government with a leader who is, to use the politically correct term, humor challenged.

If I had to choose a Marx to lead me, heaven forbid, i'd go with Groucho rather than Karl. There might be problems, but at least I would be laughing.

Of course, since Karl and Groucho are both actuarily mature (metabolically challenged?), that's a dead issue, and Sarah appears to be very much a live option as well as a live wire.

Astroboy is Spaced-Out
Reagan never committed that old libtard canard about the October Surprise with the Iranian hostages. What a bunch of donkey stew.

Actually, the deal with the trading of arms with Iran was to engage their behind the scenes support to work with Lebanonese terrorists who were holding many of our Foreign Service workers and military attaches hostage in Lebanon. They used their influence to help free many of these hostages. In exchange, they received weapons from us, most of which had been obsoleted by our own military. We also used the money they paid to fight Communists in Nicaragua.

Leftists are very confused and hate-filled people. Reagan brought about a Conservative revolution in this country and that is why people like SpaceBoy hate him so much.

You are exactly correct that the old-guard Republicans despised Reagan and wanted to keep their blueblooded country-clubbers running the party even though it meant they would never have power.

George HW Bush was exactly who these people were. He ran against Reagan in the primary and, fortunately, was beaten. It's too bad Reagan chose him as his running mate. Between George 1 and George 2 they have destroyed our party. It was George 1 that coined the term describing Reagan's Supply Side economics as "Voodoo Economics." He never believed in this which is why he promptly voted for, at the time, the largest tax increase in American history after his infamous "Read My Lips" statement. He basically tried to undo all the great things Reagan had brought into being. And then his son followed that up with the Coup de grace, Compassionate Conservatism which turned the Republicans into another party of Big Government. This is what has brought us to where we are now with the Trojan Horse hopey-changy working to complete the job of finishing our great republic off.
