Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

It is a statement of the obvious-both trite and troublesome-to acknowledge that most children today generally receive more than they need at Christmas, especially compared to children of times past, and particularly in America. They know the joy of receiving very well-probably too well. It is the gift of giving that is altogether different, as they typically learn as adults. And it is that gift which is the spirit of this season.

Kids a century ago, who did not receive nearly as much in their Christmas stocking, were nonetheless ecstatic on that magical morning. This was a universal truth for children around the world. One such child was a boy named Joseph Pekara, growing up in Czechoslovakia in the 1930s, where the Great Depression was taking its toll.

Joseph's family had meager means. One toy-any toy-received at anytime, was a thrill. Joseph's favorite gift was a wheeled, wooden horse given to him by his craftsman father. He cherished it, cradled it, played with it almost every day.

Life got difficult for the citizens of Czechoslovakia in the late 1930s, when the Nazis took and terrorized their precious young nation, a rare, glittering jewel of Eastern European democracy between the devastation of the two world wars. Just when it seemed hope was ready to return once the Nazis were defeated in 1945, Comrade Stalin and the communists took over, making many things even worse-particularly Christmas. The communists hated Christianity more than Hitler did, and their assault on Christians included the day Christians mark as the Creation of their faith.

Among the more egregious communist affronts on religion in Czechoslovakia was the state's notorious anti-religious indoctrination of school children, which was in full swing well into the late 1970s. Karl Marx was hailed as the new messiah. Vaclav Havel, who went to jail in protest of such nonsense, dubbed this unceasing campaign of mendacity "the communist culture of the lie." It was what Mikhail Gorbachev had in mind when he acknowledged that "atheism took rather savage forms" in the communist world.

As for Joseph Pekara, however, he lived to see better times. He watched communism's collapse, and lived long enough to import some of his own ideals to America, including a little something to remember fondly this special time of year.

Like the man who made him that prize possession, Joseph likewise grew to make wooden crafts, wanting to harness the joy of his childhood and share it with other children. Ultimately, among his final signature, masterpiece works is an intricate, animated, wood-carved village, 17-feet x 6-feet x 8-feet, with 82 life-like moving figures, that today rests at the Slovak Folk Crafts (www.SlovakFolkCrafts.com ) shop in Grove City, Pennsylvania, owned by Anne and Dave Dayton. The remarkable old-time village-a marvel of old-time engineering-depicts folk life as it existed in Western Slovakia for centuries. It was carefully transplanted to Western Pennsylvania in sections, and is believed to be the largest animated woodcarving in the United States. The final section was completed just six weeks before Joseph died in April 2005.

Joseph today lives on in that model, and does so especially at Christmas. That's because the genesis of the display was Christmas-a crèche. The village was constructed around a rightful centerpiece: a manger scene-an image once verboten in many villages in Joseph's country during the communist occupation.

But there's more to the story. Aside from the handsome figurines and carefully carved lines into the basswood, the display is a typical manger scene, with one exception: inserted into the majesty of the moment is a little boy. The boy is barefoot, humble in means and in spirit, on his knees, unworthy. ("Fall on your knees. Oh, hear the angel voices.... Behold your King. Before Him lowly bend.") His left hand is planted firmly on the ground to brace himself, while his outstretched right arm is fully extended, bearing a priceless gift for the Christ child: a wheeled, wooden horse given to the boy by his craftsman father, a prized possession that he cherished, cradled, played with almost every day.

Like the Christ child, Joseph, a boy of humble origins, would witness persecution in his native land for his faith. In the end, both would persevere only through the hope born that day in a manger.

Joseph Pekara, the boy and the man, expressed the true Spirit of the season; in more ways than one, it was a truly special Christmas gift from one child to another.

MANY THANKS!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Some of those
objecting to to the expression of Christmas at the workplace, shopping malls and public property as well as other non-believers often profess a concern regarding evangelical voters. Their fear seems to be religion is being "shoved down our throats" and a fear that creeping evangelicalism will hinder their lives.

If there is merit in their belief then shouldn't we be equally concerned the reverse could happen similar to what was once practiced in communist countries?

THE SECRET MIRACLE OF CHRISTMAS

Each year, more and more friends tell me they have become disillusioned with our modern Christmas. They are depressed by what Christmas now represents in the collective mentality of our society. The expensive sparkle of this once Christian holiday is even an economic burden for some people because they spend themselves into serious financial stress trying to satisfy everyone’s expectations. Gift giving is fine within reason as long as it doesn’t become the reason for the season.

Hollywood’s Christmas as emotional family gatherings, pleasant as they can sometimes be, is not the point of this day either. Astonishing as it may seem, the true meaning of Christmas is greater drama than anything the shallow moguls of Hollywood could possibly serve up.

Before Jesus appeared, mankind desperately needed, among other things, a far clearer message concerning the definitive purpose or principle by which we should live our lives. This is surely the most profound question each of us must face, so an answer becomes of utmost importance for our well-being.

It was decided in the august counsels of heaven that a divine Person, the Logos (John 1:1, New Testament Greek term for the pre-incarnate Christ Jesus) would permanently divest Himself of the superlative capabilities that had always been His prerogative amid the myriad splendors of the heavenly state. This glorious Personage of immense power and majesty would eventually shine mega wattage of theological light into our dark world. But first He had to be literally “morphed” into a divinely enlivened, minuscule human egg in the womb of a virtuous young Jewish girl and then be born as a tiny, helpless baby boy who would be named Jesus. His goal in this incarnation was that we might come to see in fully human terms His principle of benevolent motivation as the only possible basis for a harmonious one-to-one relationship with God the Father.

THE SECRET MIRACLE OF CHRISTMAS
As we can easily see, the secret miracle of genuine divine incarnation wonderfully illumines the true nature of Christmas as a joyous celebration of a deliberate, totally unselfish divine choice of self-giving agape love long ago. A choir of a million glittering angels could never adequately praise the exquisite love of the mighty Logos of infinite power and glory who became our tiny baby Jesus and the potential Savior of each one of us that holy, crystal clear night so very long ago.

Now that’s biblical Christmas.

loco, you know the answer

Of course you know the answer to your question. The libs/lefties cannot govern by morality; they must govern by their superior, elite, ethics, relatively applied. Hold on for a great battle: That of the atheists, who now think they are ready to attempt the defeat of morality, Christianity, religion in general. I mean Dawkins, Hitchens, and their kind.

BUT WE WILL WIN, they simply do not know what our Resources are.

More is Less
Sadly, while today's children receive more material gifts than yesterday's children did, they receive far less leadership, guidance, discipline, instruction, and genuine caring than they require to become well-adjusted successful adults. Rather than giving their children the immaterial they actually need, parents seek to assuage the guilt they feel over their emotional and spiritual neglect of their children by showering them with "stuff."

Give them what they want
I spent Christmas learning to know the Next Genration -- my three great-nephews and two great-nieces, the oldest pair two, the youngest one week old. The babies happily played with the paper the tots ripped off their packages, crawling among the packages with no interest in what was in them. The toddlers became ecstatic over new flashlights, one of them even taking her new flashlight to bed with her and leaving the elaborate dolly on the floor. Their parents laughed ruefully and said *Why did we buy them toys?*

The secret of course is a gift that needs them, and in this day and age, that does not talk to them. Watching a tot shine a flashlight under her chin, on the ceiling or the window, down her grandpas throat, under the couch, or sweep it in circles around the walls is instructive.

Laura Ingalls and her sister were overjoyed with their own tin cups and one stick of candy, and our tots were delighted with $2.00 flashlights. Give the kids what they want -- and let them show you what that is.
