Right up front, let me state that this column is for ACADEMIC purposes only. According to friends of mine still with our government, because of my last novel, my home phone and computer became the subject of curiosity for at least two of our three-letter agencies.

The novel was entitled “America’s Last Days” and dealt with a revolution led by a former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and a former Director of the FBI. Both men felt that the United States of their childhoods, of traditional values, and of true sovereignty, was in a death-spiral from which it would never recover. They felt, that as patriots, it was their duty to try and save at least part of the nation.

Over the course of the last year and a half, I’ve gotten over one-thousand emails from readers. Just in the last two months, I received emails from five war-fighters in Iraq who thanked me for writing a novel that held dear the ideals for which they were fighting in Iraq. Ideals that they felt, were waning in their very own country.

Of all the feedback I have gotten regarding the novel, none is more meaningful, sad, or telling, than those five emails. Are we losing the liberty and traditional values that these heroic soldiers are fighting for overseas?

Putting that rhetorical question aside, I’d like to stress again that this column is merely meant to create discussion. Nothing about it should be taken literally by those with the power to tap my phones or read my emails. Better to direct such resources toward the dictators and terrorists who continue to target our nation.

So, with that caveat established, let’s imagine a United States of the very near future.

A United States where:

• An ultra-liberal candidate for president has the unethical support of almost the top 100 newspapers in the country, the top three television networks, and two of the three top cable networks.

• Nancy Pelosi and other liberals would like to silence the needed and conservative voices of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Mark Levin, Glenn Beck, Laura Ingraham, and others.

• Some Republicans are morphing into liberal Democrats in order to keep their seats at any cost.

• Border security has become a punch-line for many elected officials on both sides of the aisle.

• God and Christianity are under constant attack from the far-left.

• Liberals -- most especially the Democratic candidate for president -- and our Supreme Court, would like to treat Jihadists as criminals and extend statutory habeas corpus to enemy combatants.

• Large segments of the entertainment community are purposefully and systematically exposing our children to the vilest forms of smut to both make money and to indoctrinate.

• Strict-constructionist judges are an endangered species.

• A number of Republicans are jumping on the “Amnesty-for-illegal-aliens” bandwagon faster than Democrats.

• Lower taxes and fiscal restraint are going the way of the Hula-Hoop, good manners, and an abiding belief in the goodness and mission of the American soldier.

Whoops. I’m sorry. Did I say “the near future?” I meant now.

Accepting that depressing and potentially tragic state of affairs, while calculating the prospect of a committed, far-left president, teaming with a Democrat majority in Congress for at least the coming four years, an obvious question comes to mind. That being, is it time to create a “new” United States? If so, how would you go about establishing a new nation predicated on the beliefs and wisdom of our Founding Fathers?

The shrinking number of conservative Americans who still believe in the promise of our Republic are anxiously awaiting the scenarios to be outlined in this “for academic purposes only” homework assignment.

The most likely outcome
Of an over-reaching, defiantly leftist regime' in Washington D.C. would not be a "new United States", but rather a total breakdown of social order. As the policies of the "Utopians" did progressively greater damage to our economy (environmental policy), infrastructure (public works policy), and society (criminal law, health care, etc. policies) the leadership would levy higher and higher taxes and demand more and more "emergency powers" to deal with the "crisis"- which they would, of course, blame the rest of us for.

In the end, there would be the same sort of collapse that ended the Roman Empire, and in fact for remarkably similar reasons (ref. Toynbee and Gibbon).

Afterward, there would be what could charitably be described as a mess.

And the most likely successor culture (barring a worldwide Islamic state) would not be the one socialists dream of ruling. It would more likely be based on the same institutions that held sway in medieval Europe- the various Christian churches.

If "Progressives" think they are living in a "theocracy" now, they have no idea what one really looks like. But at the rate they are going, they, and the rest of us, are all too likely to find out what a real one is like- the hard way.

Is it time to create a new United States
Your column really struck a cord with me because this is something that I have been thinking about for a while now. The answer to the "is it time?" part is yes and here is the answer to the "how?" part. First, we should allow the states like Vermont to succeed with the caveat that a physical fence will be built at the border. Second, a national referendum will be held in each of the remaining states. The citizens of each state will vote on whether their state should stay in the traditional-values United States or join a new country that is run by Pelosi, Reed, Howard Dean, the Clintons, Obama, and the Goracle. Hell, I would even give the liberals Washington, D.C. Of course, many details would have to be worked out and again a physical fence would have to be built at the borders.

American Scenario
The laws you would use to punish "jihadists" will one day be used to punish patriotic Americans.
Liberals are deluded fools, but they are merely enablers, the U.S. was betryaed by the likes of Limberger and all the other Kosher Konservatives
Why did't you mention gun confiscation-you forgot or maybe the Second Amendment is taken for granted now?

The United States Of America
Obama loves to use this term. He must include "America". When he is elected it will never again be "The United States Of America" that we loved and were so proud to be a part of it's citizenship!

New USA
I for one believe that we are seeing the last days of the USA that I grew up in. I believe that we need a separate nation where those who still believe in the original principles of this nation can be preserved and where people can take back control of their lives.
I am presently seeking another country where I can retire and escape the coming chaos that we are barreling toward.
I am not a conspiracy theory type, but I am beginning to wonder if the Republican Party is really trying to lose this fall elections. Perhaps, they are all Rhinos now and want to pursue the same liberal and disastrous policies as the Dems.
I think a new nation is the only real hope true Americans have for future happiness.

Which way to turn
Certainly not against each other. The majority of Americans still hold similar values. We may express them differently. We may have conflicting ideas on what kind of policy might best uphold those values. I still believe that the run of the mill American no matter his political party affiliation, all still revere the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.
The fly in the ointment in the government. They don't except when it serves their purposes.
How sad that MacKinnon has to publicly declare this an academic exercise for knowledge that he'd be spied upon for it otherwise. If that isn't reason alone to wonder aloud if we've already crossed the rubicon.
Another thing; no matter your prejudices regarding the just yesterday passed FISA law, there was a time when a secret court had a particular name. They even made a movie with that name. Way back in time a secret court was called a Star Chamber. That is what our government has now authorized. Go figure.

Good point. With the liberal-majority Congress' approval rating now at 9% (2% excellent rating/7% good rating) it won't be long until the Nancy Pelosi gets tarred and feathered! haha

I do not fear ....
I do not fear this! Why you ask? There are too many freedom loving people (patriots) who really understand what our nation (Republic) and our Constitution is about! And these people are willing to fight and die, when necessary, to maintain this great country. This does not mean a "war", perhaps "revolution" is a better description, will not happen. It will, if we do not stick to our Constitution and maintain our Republic! My friend, you just wait, watch, and see! Better still, participate on the side of right! IMHO!

Heinlein anyone?
Since you asked for our projection of what will happen in the future, I am of the mind that a few Scifi authors are more prescient than commonly considered.
Robert Heinlein has made a prediction that the USA will devolve into separate mega-states, with varying degrees of liberty.

A hundred years from now, the USA will be comprised of Mexifornia, the Prairie States, New England, the Deep South, Montana-Wyoming-Idaho-Dakotas Free State, and the NY-Phil-Balt-DC coalition primarily, each with their own brand of political attitude.

Multi-national corporations that are extra-territorial will become more politically involved to the extent that borders will be barriers to physical movement, but the flow of money will know no barriers.

It's always difficult to say how this will come about, but it may be a rather bloodless change, with different entities just realizing that they have less in common and mutually agreeing to go their separate ways.

Almost Forgot
Texas, the Republic of Texas, in the mix of different polities.

Work within the Framework
Our constitution is sound. It just needs to be shored up. We need to elect leaders who will:

1) Establish term limits. A return to citizen leadership, as opposed to oppression by career politicians and government bureaucrats, would help a great deal in the fight to shrink government power and budgets.

2) Abolish slavery. The government's ability to claim our labor can be negated by amendment. The income tax can be replaced with taxes on consumption and imports.

3) Fight vigorously to protect our individual liberties from the tyranny of the majority.

People are already fed up with the status quo. Liberty and freedom are powerful and compelling ideals. All it takes is one articulate advocate -- ala Reagan -- to champion smaller government, and the people will be ready to follow; especially given the epic mess the current boneheads from both parties are in the process of creating.

Yes it's time, but maybe too late
I think the best way to go about it is for freedom loving peoples to all move to one or two states and take them over and throw off the chains of the federal government. Refuse to abide by the increasing federal government's entitlement programs, regulations, and other socialist agenda.

Sure, the federal government will withhold money from those states that do that, but so what, we shouldn't be using tax money from the federal government for most of their unconstitutional programs anyways.

The Libertarians tried to do this and move to New Hampshire I believe. Not sure how it worked out, but it's a great idea.

If all of us freedom loving individuals that believe we should abide by the Constitution moved to one state and started from there, we may have hope.

If we keep doing what we're doing, and voting for either the Republicans or Democrats we're going to get more of the same. Both Republicans and Democrats have increased the size and scope of government for years. We can't keep voting for the lesser of two evils every election and hope to keep our country.

Of course this "movement" can't really happen because it would take too much effort, and the bureaucrats know that. They have us right where they want us, and there's very little we can do about it. I think we'll go peacefully into full blown socialism eventually.

We've got the muslims
up north, the mexicans in the southwest, the fruitcakes in the west, the rednecks in the south, the perverts in vermont (and elsewhere unfortunately), and the national black anthem throughout. Yeah, Obama, we need change alright.

Sectionalism Not The Issue
The Heinlein scenario presupposes a degree of sectionalism among the States that no longer exists. That was the major reason for the civil war; sectionalism. Today the divide is not so much among the States as in the North-South or East-West but among the Urban and Rural divide. If you look at the last 2 or 3 elections the Liberals took all the counties in the cities while the Republicans took all the rural counties. The suburbs were divided.

The big problem today is NOT the geographical divide, it is the failure of the supposed two-party system. We no longer have opposing principles, we have opposing Parties whose only objective is to determine which brand of socialism we will live under.

Create a new United States??
No! Absolutely not! But it sure in h*ll needs remodeling!

The "People" of this country IS the United States! The land we stand on is simply the foundation. Obviously we can't remove all the people and start all over from the ground up. But if one looks at and compares the United States with their home, the house they live in. You'd know what to do.

The roof of a house has one purpose. To protect the underlaying structure from all outside elements, creating a safe and secure environment for the family to live within. If the roof springs a leak, you patch it. If shingles are blown off you replace them. If the house is attacked by invading insects, you defend it!

The Government is our "Roof!" Unfortunately, it is made of a weak material. "People." And we, the home owners, have allowed that roof to fall into a sad state of disrepair. The problem with this living "Government roof", like any roof, it cannot fix itself. What's worse, this "Government Roof" has taken on a life of it's own. It thinks that it is all important. And that the walls and the infrastructure of the house have only one purpose. To support it! But it has become weak and rotten, infested with Liberal termites, and soon will collapse. So, if we can't fix it by replacing a few timbers, we must replace the entire roof.

I think we all agree with you 100%. You use metaphor really well in your example, but I think we're all aware of the basic problem you describe, that we need to replace the government.

The problem is the government has insulated itself so well within the two party system that we can't replace it easily. So basically we're back at square one. How do we replace them all?

We've tried for years and years to no avail, therefore those of us that feel the same should all pick up and go somewhere together to "gather our forces" so to speak. Not for a violent revolution, I hope it never comes to that, but for a peaceful revolution.

I honestly don't see any other way for this to be done.

No Need to Create a new USA
Take the money that is supposed to construct a fence on our borders.

Construct that fence around Washington DC - let NO one in or out.

The country doesn't need to die - just isolate the cancer from the rest of the country.

We have our own resources, manufacturing, long coastline with ports and a majority of citizens who believe in religion, freedom from government and low taxes (we have no state income tax).

I am more than willing to become a Texan first and leave the rest of the U.S. to Pelosi and the ACLU.

Secession
I've been advocating a split of the nation for some time. Liberals to one side, Conservatives to the other and may the best nation survive. Only one rule, once you choose a side you can never cross to the other side. I'd love to sit back and watch a Liberal nation consume itself in petty ethnic, sexual, etc politics, cripple itself with overregulation and taxation, and get swamped by an massive influx of 3rd world immigrants who will be welcomed across its borders. It would be a really good show.

This paranoid fantasy is food for the traitors who lose fair and square then want to force their way on the majority. You kid yourselves when you claim to represent the people. All those you hate are the people too. Furthermore, like the radical liberals, you turn a blind eye to the fact we are not clearly blue or red. There are many blues in the red states and red in the blue states with the majority of people being generally moderate.

If you can’t find faith in the constitution or the people of this country, take faith in God. He won’t let us down.

Terrorists in our Midst
Illegal immigration specialists tell us there is between 12 and 20 million illegal aliens in this country.

Everyone focuses on the poor mexican laborer who pours concrete and mows lawns. They should not be here but I am not afraid of those people.

There is 9.3 million Islamic people in the United States. If 1% of them are Islamic terrorists that makes 90,000 terrorists in the United States.

How many of those 93,000 are welcoming, housing and feeding terrorists crossing our borders? That averages to 1860 per state.

France recently went through 4 weeks of these 'lil' darlings burning, looting, raping and generally wreaking havoc.

A concentrated effort on football games, water supply, electric supply or communications towers would bring us down worse than gasoline prices.

In TN a 360 foot cell tower was brought down and the police suspect thieves trying to steal copper - no arrests or suspects at this time.

This could have been a practice run by terrorists just as easily.

America is in a "Clear and Present Danger" and Obama is supported by HAMAS and even set up telephone banks to call Americans to vote Obama.

What Americans do you think they call?

Who will return to liberty?

Suppose we start with the first things. What are the beliefs and wisdom of our forefathers that resulted in the liberty we cherish? There is no agreement among conservatives here.

Will we acknowledge that Reformed Christianity (Calvinism) established the theological foundation on which the nation was built?

Will we acknowledge that rule of law is preferable to the rule of kings and that God’s law is preferable to man made law?

If we acknowledge these things are true and essential for liberty under limited government, how many would want to return to the founding principles?

The American Revolution against a tyrannical king was predicated on the Great Awakening. This revival of Biblical Christianity held that all men including king and governments of men were subject to law. The law they were referring to was English Common Law that was based on the Law of God given to men in the Bible.

Without this understanding of law there will be no revolution. When the people of God allow the state to sanction lawlessness like abortion and sodomy, then what do you think will stir them now? To paraphrase Mr. Schaeffer, our post-Christian culture is characterized by personal peace and affluence and as long as we can have that we will succumb to tyranny.

Dems and Judges

Sticking to the Constitution is a great idea, BUT with the liberal Justices on the Supreme Court, it is almost impossible, especially if Barack Obama is elected. He said he would nominate Justices in the mold of Ginsburg. Now how does that sound?

The only way to prevent this is to vote for McCain. I am from AZ and have MANY disagreements with John McCain, but turning this country over to Obama, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, and the liberals on the Supreme Court, is not the way to take back our country.

The same holds true for every Dem House member and Senator. They need to be voted out!! After that, we start looking for Conservative candidates to replace them for the election in 2010 (House). We have many very good Republicans in both the House and Senate, but they are not often heard because of the media.

We cannot take another year of dems in control of Congress . . . look at the gas prices. Drill Now . . . Drill Here!

Liberal Facism
Everyone really needs to read the book "Liberal Facism" by Jonah Goldberg. Upon reading this book, you will see that this is exactly where the Dems ARE taking us.

Please, please read this book before it is too late!

Wow!
Read Mac's book, one of the few nonfiction that I read. Now a great article and all my favorite posters in one area. Thank goodness all ya'll have said it better than I can. Something needs to be done before we end up in the swampland that congress leaves us. I see most of the trolls are afraid to tread here. Makes the read much easier.

Home Invasions
When a home invasion occurs most of us would be trying to defend our families to the death and would care little at that time about political issues, if political issues would even cross a sane persons mind in that crisis.

Our homes are in America and America has already been invaded - not tomorrow or next year NOW!

I have many political issues with McCain.

Right now I am concerned about the safety of my family.

There will be time to deal with other issues later.

Obama said genocide is ok with him in Iraq.

I will not trust him to protect my family and country.

My Dad Told Me...
Things are never as good or as bad as they seem. That's true of our country as well. The news media would have you believe that the economy is in shambles and we are 'teetering on the brink of disaster'.

Yet, there are groceries in the grocery stores, clothes in the clothes stores, cars at the car stores, movies playing at the movie houses, gas at the gas stations, jobs that need filled, and new houses being built.

As bad as our government representatives are, and some are downright criminal, this country has strength beyond our government.

We don't need a new United States, we just need to focus more on what is right about this great nation and do more to encourage good citizenship, personal responsibility, and respect for the family.

Given that most of the things mentioned in the hypothesis will be done through free elections, or in order to attract majorities for the purpose of winning free elections, presumably if one is looking for a different outcome, the new America in this hypothesis would have to not be based on the will of the people. I suppose that is the start of what one does when ones positions lose favor and yet one wants them to be enacted anyway. One abandons representative democracy.

A little late.
Repeated projections now make it clear that in 25 years, our population will be 430 million, and that of those 130 million added, 80% will be immigrants or the children of immigrants. And those immigrants do not come from Europe. And the politicians of both parties have had ample time to resolve this situation, and have not. At the same time, the entitlement mentality of this country has created a situation where no candidate that wishes to get elected can talk about our major entitlement programs, yet we also know that we can't remotely pay for them in coming years. In the last 8 years alone, government spending has increased from $1.85 trillion to over $3.2 trillion - a pace more rapid than at anytime in our history. And both parties are clearly responsible.

At the same time, costs of health care, food and fuel have far outstripped the increases in income for the middle and moderate income classes. So, they vote for politicians in both parties who will promise to use the government to help, even though we are running historically high deficits - because we can't pay for what we have - let alone what they want.

Of these two major issues, however, a financial crisis can be resolved, even if it hurts a lot of people and takes a decade to resolve. However, the change-over from a country whose population is based primarily on Europe, to one whose population is based on non-Europeons, is permanent.

Personally, I ignore the parties and the people anymore. A wise saying is that "the fact that a majority of people want something, doesn't make it right".

Those voting, however they vote, are desperately trying to hold onto what they have, when the reality is we need to start again. And since there is no place to go, we can only watch and wait. And when the crisis hits, and people finally have to accept responsibility, then we can try again.

You need to do some research as to the original Consitutional Convention:

1. Why it was formed
2. It's original purpose vs the final product
3. What it replaced; The articles of Confederation, primarily the 13th.

On The Other Hand...
The words of my college accounting teacher resonate clearly - "Never vote for the incumbent".

Term limits would not eliminate the corruption and ineptitude of the government, but it would be a great first step.

Pushed to the wall!!!
The pushing has started with the destruction of middle class tough men here in America. When you push average America men to the wall....you are in trouble. When it gets so bad that an average American man's family begins to suffer. I predict all hell will break lose. Believe me, all you smarmy, main stream media types, American men can be very ruthless. I fear for my country for I served with a Marine squad from 68-69 in battle. Pushed to the wall you will not find metrosexual males but ferocious willing killers who will protect their families. I hope we never see that happen, I have seen it up close and personal. There are plenty of Philo Beido's out there.

there's more truth than fiction
I just finished reading "Empire" by Orson Scott Card in which there was a civil war between the "blue" and "red" states of America. It was more realistic than fiction in IMHO. AS this country sits split 50/50, I can only imagine it shall come to pass within the near future.

The Constitution of the United States was written not to tell the government how to serve the American Citizen, but rather, to PROTECT the American Citizen from the government.

Federal Government

The 4 principal reasons why a federal government was formed:

"(1) The common defense (national security);

(2) the preservation of public peace, as well against internal convulsions as external attacks;

(3) the regulation of commerce with other nations and between states;

(4) the superintendent of our intercourse, political and commercial, with foreign countries (foreign affairs)." - Alexander Hamilton, Federalist Paper No.23, 1787

The winner
will be the political group which gains enough support to control the nation AND which builds its level of support by convincing others that its principles are the best. We are now in a struggle between two deficient parties, neither having enough support to gain lasting control. But one - the secular socialist group - has been gaining steadily by holding on to high birth rate factions and importing more of them through loose immigration policy. If the Republican Party is unsuccessful in reforming itself so that it attracts enough supporters to overcome the socialists, the socialists will ultimately win due to demographics. A political movement which can appeal to non-socialists AND convince many of the high birth rate factions to convert to its side (because of principles shown to be superior) is the only way to avoid having our beloved nation from falling into ruin.

Most of you here will probably disagree, but I do not think conservatism as currently understood will win over enough hearts and minds to become a controlling force. It will take more than "free markets", "free trade", "lower taxes", etc to solve the enormous problems our nation faces (such as not enough good jobs, huge trade and budget deficits, energy dependence, horrible education, availability and cost of health care). It would be better to scrap the badly soiled conservative label and build a movement based on good solutions to our problems.

Republic versus Democracy
I am appalled at the number of people in America that think America is a democracy!

America is a 'Constitutional Republic'.

Just after the completion and signing of the Constitution, in reply to a woman's inquiry as to the type of government the Founders had created, Benjamin Franklin said, "A Republic, if you can keep it."

What is the difference between the two:

Republic = Rule by Law.
Democracy = Rule by Majority.



Let me give an analogy:

When a mob decides to hang someone in a Democracy - everyone gets a vote - since the one being hung is out voted - Democracy rules.

The Constitutional Republic is guided by the protections and rights stated in the US Constitution and Bill of Rights - every American Citizen have these guarantees - no more no less.

Under a Democracy the government can grant rights and protections to which ever 'collective group' that it deems worthy.

Under a Democracy the government can take away rights and protections from which ever 'collective group' that it deems unworthy.

The main problem is the weakening of states rights. The states need a check and balance on the Supreme Court. A constitutional convention needs to be called. I would humbly offer up this suggestion. A state governors veto on Supreme Court decisions. I don't think a violent overthrow is necessary. I believe the founding fathers made the court weak on purpose and Marbury V Madison, although necessary still gave them too much power as well as the 17th amendments stealing of states rights.

The Constitutional Convention in PA

1. Why it was formed

The primary reasons were to fix the problems with interstate commerce and the problem of Shay’s rebellion.

2. It's original purpose vs the final product

The mandate was to develop and propose amendments to the Articles of Confederation to fix the problems noted above. Instead it eliminated the Articles of Confederation and replaced them with the Constitution.

3. What it replaced; The articles of Confederation, primarily the 13th.

The 13th article of confederation stated that the articles could NOT be changed without agreement between ALL 13 colonies/States. The Constitution became effective after only 9 States approved it.

So ultimately the answer is, if CALLED, a Constitutional Convention could write a totally new Constitution, throwing out the existing and replacing it entirely.

South should secede from the Union
The "South" would include those states that were a part of the original Confederacy plus Texas. The disdain in the non-southern states for anything or anyone in the "South" still continues to this day and it is time to divide this country accordingly. I would bet a large amount of money that the "Southern United States of America" would beat the pants off of the "other states" in every way. We have the natural resources we need and the well-educated workforce we need to prosper very well.

Conservative Americans have to accept some unpleasant truths.

America is indeed turning to socialism. "Real" Americans, those that really believe in self reliance and freedom, are in the minority. Most Americans are serfs. They do not want freedom. They want to be fed and warm. Their horizons are low and they're comfortable with a marginal future, so long as they have big TVs, cable, video games, and government safety nets.

Over 90% of hyphenated "Americans" do not believe in self reliance and democracy. Their DNA accepts despots, warlords and corrupt governments. They only want some of the spoils.

True Americans will continue to have to pay for all the others. Only when this burden becomes truly unbearable will they risk their comfortable existence to do what will ultimately be necessary. They will have to fight or become enslaved.

The DC vs. Heller decision was the last gasp of liberty by this government. They want our guns because they know someday we will wake up and realize we have to use them.

Until that day comes, real Americans will have to do with less and pay more for all the others.

here's the part that the article is right in line with:

The Republic
The consitution was formatted as a Republic. However, we have become a Democracy. If we were a Republic, much of this discussion would be held within states between the states voters and the leaders they elect. Washington would not be involved. Further, other states would not be involved either. There would need to be no revolution - because the issues would relate to how people living in each state chose to run their lives.

We have the debate, because we are no longer a Republic. We are a centralized democracy. Washington, in its determination to apply all laws to everyone living in all states, has systematically assumed much of the powers the founders intended to be reserved to the states.

Franklin, when asked what they'd created, commented "A Republic - if you can keep it". The founders were absolutely opposed to democracy, because they well knew that the vote would enable a majority to exercise the same level of tryanny over the minority, that dicatators and kings do.

The South that you knew is almost gone - like it or not. Texas, in another 15 years or so will have a majority of hispanics, not Eueopeons. At the same time, there is a steady flow of northerners into Southern states such as Florida and North Carolina, who are also no longer classical deep south states. Louisiana in turn, is what it is. The deep South, as it was once referred to, is still electing leaders like Cochran and Lott. 25 states with 22% of the population have 1/2 the senate votes. These states, along with other smaller states, use their Senate control to routinely extract more tax dollars per capita, than the larger states. This, needless to say, would go away. It's a nice thought - but only that.

You are correct that the Federal government has nisulated itself. That is the nature of Big Government and is the reason why the EU will be ruinous for the sovereignty of the nations of Europe. The Founders knoew this whenthey designed our system to have most rights retained by the States. Over time the Fed has usurped the powers of the States and therefore become more remote and less responsive to the people. Truly responsive government must be clsoe to the goverened. Big Government is too easily swayed by special interest pressure groups who are easily able to aggregate power. In a less government where those special interests would have to work with the 50 individual states we would have much more freedom. Teh eco-Marxixts in CA and NY for example sholdn't be able to tell teh people of Alaska thatthey can't drill in ANWR, somehting most Alaskans support.

Sealing Our Fate
The people of the US have been convinced by the despicable left wing propaganda machine, aka MSM, that they must vote only for one of two parties, GOP or DEM. and that's what we do. So why should we complain that you can't tell a GOP from a DEM or there's not a nickel worth of difference between any of them when the choice is either/or. We are now at the point where many vote for the lesser of TWO evils and there is no such thing as a lesser evil.

Some people say that there's not a dime's worth of difference between D and R candidates around election time.

The problem is, not enough people are getting involved at the grassroots level.

By making our demands known loudly and early, we can SHAPE who gets to the State and Federal candidacies.

2/3 of the State legislators can call for a Constitutional convention. Once formed, following the precedent of the original convention, they can do pretty much anything they want.

For example Article V could be replaced with something to the order that the “new” Constitution would go into effect on ratification by one State and Amendments can be made effective by a simple majority vote in congress.

That may sound extreme but remember, our original “Constitution” required that any change be approved by ALL the States and that wasn’t done.

Liberals are for individual freedom but forfiet control to the courts. Comment: Make Congress do it's job.

Yep those ideals which put the country in worse economic shape in '36 than in '32, tried to pack the Supreme Court, tried to run the economy via government control. Great ideals.

Since socialist societies always need
the effort and subsequent incomes of productive people to exist, there is a type of intervention that can be done though no one will want to do it. Private sector people could collectively stop working and go on gov't assistance. Funds for everything would quickly dry up, the economy would crash, and there'd be widespread poverty for a while. There. Everyone equal. Of course, ants love picnics even though they lack the ability to create them, so there'd once again be movement to recreate what made this country prosperous in the first place- business friendly policies and less government.

This will never happen, but it would be the most direct route to resetting America matters.

"The South" should secede again.....
The original Southern states plus Texas should secede from the union and form the "Southern United States of America." We have all the natural resources we need and a well-educated workforce so we would do just fine thank you very much. What we might need, we could do through trade agreements that liberals and environmentalists would have no say so about. It is wonderful to dream about!!

my idea
Our forefathers had a revolution over far less than what the current government is doing to us now. If we had told them that some of us pay 50% in taxes they would wonder why we are such cowards for letting the government take that much from us.

I've thought about this a lot and we could keep the ball rolling if we:

1. Had term limits for all candidates.
2. Force candidates to set goals with what will be accomplished and by what standards (like some companies do with employees)
3. Treat elections like job interviews not prom king elections.
4. Only allow people paying taxes and not on ANY kind of public assistance to vote. If someone is not bright enough to support themselves they are not bright enough to vote for President.
5. Have national propositions like California but that cannot be overturned even if they conflict with the constitution. (Or make them automatic constitutional admentments).
6. Eliminate the Senate and just go with the House.

These six elements would not be the "end all" but would make us last another 100 years.

I think that we all know how corrupt D.C. is. But it starts also in many cases at the local level. In point, about a month ago an indivual who was running for public office here, came to my door asking for my support since I am a registered Republican. I asked this candidate if he knew that this town was a sanctuary city.
He looked perplexed and said no he did not know.
Then I said "and you want my vote and you did not know this was a sanctuary city and that sanctuary cities seem to favor illegals"?
My analysis is that he either knew and didn't care or was embarassed. Either way he didn't get our vote. We said that it sounds corrupt to us, and it moves up to all levels of govt. where money does most of the talking. So
the clean up starts at the local level IMHO.

Shifting of more control to the States would actually be shifting control back to the individual states. It was refered to as States Rights and a limited central Federal government. Worked pretty good too from what I understand, only lasted about the first ninety years or so though.

I find it disturbing, although not terribly surprising, that alphabet agencies would be interested in the thoughts and expressions of an obviously patriotic, concerned American writer who is obviously right winged. I wonder, do they also pay as much attention to the left? I gather, they do not.

The left in this country and around the world seems to gain by leaps and bounds and we seem to be held to very small gains. They always seem one step ahead and you would have to conclude, also protected from the normal consequences of deceit and propaganda which is somehow never discovered, publicized, recognized or investigated. It certainly never becomes general public knowledge.

If I have noticed these things it would stand to reason that those paid to notice and investigate such things, might, with their resources, also notice and investigate and yet we never hear of it and if completed, the investigations never see the light of day. WHY?
If I keep tripping over it, why can't it be seen by others with more resources and greater acumen than I?

These suppositions, are a little bit more than disturbing.

With socialism taking over this country
by both parties disregarding our Constitution, it seems to me that we in the States could call for a referendum and get these "traitors" removed.

Tough questions, not easily answered, problems not easily solved. As I think you have indicated, the dilemma goes way beyond just which candidate is elected POTUS. The heart of the matter, I believe, lies with our country's accelerating drive to rip God out of our society. I do not think that politics alone is going to be able to fix it. We have enjoyed a truly great country. We are now watching it sink into the quicksand of decadence.

Orson Scott Card (OSC), Part 1
A post above mentioned Card's book EMPIRE and I got curious because I've read a couple of articles he wrote and was very much impressed.

I found the afterword to EMPIRE and have the following to say about it, especially in reference to the discussion going on in this article and the posts above:

The afterword was about the polarization of American politics leading to possible civil war.

IMHO, Liberals and Conservatives both have important things to say about many issues.

What should be a “balancing” act has become a battle of extremes on either side, just as OSC stated in his afterword.

OSC identifies as Democrat (he is pro-gun control and doesn’t much care for free-market capitalism), but he fully supports the War on Terror, including the War in Iraq, the same as Lieberman and Miller do. He is also against gay marriage. He is skeptical of global warming. He is skeptical of both “Darwinism” and ID.

He sounds a lot like ME! Well, in the sense that on many issues, you cannot pigeonhole me.

I see the wrongness of the extreme LEFT, much as he has and Tammy Bruce has.

But I also see the wrongness of the extreme RIGHT.

OSC, Part 2
I am, after all, a moderate. A moderate liberal or a moderate conservative? Well, I think I lean more toward the conservative side on issues of economics and foreign policy, but I have much sympathy for arguments made by non-radical liberals about our Society and social programs.

I understand the importance of free-market capitalism, but like many ideas, it sounds great on paper, but doesn’t always work well in the real world, run by imperfect human beings. Allowing government too much control is just as bad as letting corporations have too much control. Both are working in their own best interests and while sometimes that interest can coincide with the interests of others, there are many times when they do not and the “every man/woman/child” gets the shaft.

Many of my ideas that I have promulgated on this website and others are attempts to find that “moderate” ground where people are not giving up their core values, but rather, understanding that you can keep them in your personal life (never having an abortion; creating charities to help the poor; don’t buy a gun) rather than imposing them on everybody else (abortion remaining legal at least until viability and then exception for the life of the mother; not using taxpayer money to fund government programs that don’t actually do what they were created to do; reasonable regulations under the 2nd Amendment).

OSC’s ideas about the polarization of America and how “moderates” (and we really are moderates, not just extreme lefties or righties in disguise) are really the only way this country will flourish in this day and age really speaks to me.

And that is a “change” that should happen.

We have to accept that even with its sinful past of slavery and slaughter of Native Americans and its more recent mistakes as discussed above, America is the greatest nation in the world and no other nation has the kind of freedoms we do. If you go to wikipedia.org and look up OSC, you can link to the afterword of “Empire” yourself. I encourage ALL to read it, whether right, left or center. I think it should cause us all to take pause and to find a way to embrace each other as Americans again.

And we can, of course, only do that TOGETHER. One side can’t be capitulating while the other remains stubborn. Think of it as another more peaceful way of dealing with “terrorists” and radical Muslims. Each side has to win the hearts and minds of the other before peace can be realized. We have to accept that maybe America has done some dumb things (propping up dictators that were loyal to us) in the past that contributed to the suffering of these people, making them easy targets for extremists to come in and promise hope in the form of suicide bombings. Remember, we may have stopped WWII from becoming longer fighting the Communists, but we screwed over Poland (my family’s heritage), and the rest of Eastern Europe to do it. Those people lived in tyranny for another 50 years. Was it really worth it? Same thing with the first Gulf War. We should have gotten rid of Saddam then, and not waited and left those people with another 20 years of torment.

But they also have to accept that Americans have done so much good and can do so much more good in the World. That the AMERICAN PEOPLE are GOOD PEOPLE, just as they are really good people underneath. My husband saw that in his tour of Iraq - just regular folks trying to get to work, make money to live, spend time with their children. Not that much different than we are.

The political elites depend on the ignorance of the voting masses. If any poster here were to ask his/her family member or friend about current political events/issues, you'd get a blank stare. The reason that so many traitors to the constitution remain in Congress so many years is money alone. Voters mindlessly go to the polls time-after-time and vote for the encumbent. How else can we expain Pelosi, Reid, Murtha and Shumer, etc. Anyone who knows what they stand for would be a complete idiot to vote for them. When we add that to the number of liberal idiots who actually follow politics, it's easy to understand how socialism is taking hold in our country. Anyone who thinks that Obama will be a constitutional constructionist is clearly insane.

The sleeping giant is the voting public who haven't yet suffered the effects of socialism.

One only has to look at Vermont for a taste of what awaits...judges who let petophiles loose after 4 years who kill 12 year-olds after raping them. Contrast that with Louisiana which has a mandatory life sentence for molesting a child. If that's not enough, maybe a large tax increase for the wealthy, who will then lay off a proportionate work force and produce 10-15% unemployment will do it. Hopefully, the liberals will go first. That's only a couple of examples.

Unfortunately, the sleeping giant will have to suffer before pulling their collective heads out of their arses.

It's Already Too Late.
Even if a military commander or like figure were to stage a coup, what would result?

That individual would have to have the iron will, as well as the support needed to fire at least 90% of the teachers and professors in the country. He/She would have to shut down the majority of the newspapers and television stations. He/She would have to establish a massive gulag system where liberals would be sent to for reeducation. Hollywood, as it currently exists, would have to be dismantled. Members of radical groups such as the ACLU would have to be placed in cells where they could never be heard from again, or, perhaps another more irrevocable solution would be required.

Even if such a person had the will to act, he/she would never have the support necessary to institute such a program.

It is already too late. The best an originalist can hope for is to slow the decay.

Senator Helms was correct when he prophesied in regards to President Reagan that "God has given America one more chance." This chance was wasted by the weaselly Republicans who betrayed his legacy.

This reply has been purely academic and I would never advocate such unconstitutional measures.


Its the money
Keeping our hard earned money is the key to preserving our liberty. We need a constitutional amendment that would require that all Federal taxes must be subject to state tax competition. In short, the Federal government could only levy a tax on State governments proportional to each state's budget. All taxes would be collected by the State governments which would then pay the Federal tax bill on our behalf. The beauty of this is the Feds would be taxing State Government spending. There would be no Federal IRS harrassing citizens, and we would have the freedom to move to States which show the most respect for the property rights of its citizens. All in all, this would put a strong institutional check against growing the government. I would also make it very difficult for the Federal government to grow its spending faster than the state governments so it would help enforce Federalism.

A Libertarian View--
As a libertarian, I am all for remaking the country, except I would just make a few clarifications in the Constitution. Every word of the Constitution means what it says; it is written, for the most part, in simple, declarative sentences. There is no need for black-robed judged to "interpret" its clear meaning.

Having said that, I would make a few changes. First, the "interstate commerce" clause needs to be understood as a power to set rules about issues like weights and measures--not an excuse to pass any law Congress wants.

Similarly, the so-called "general welfare" clause, is followed by a detailed list of "enumerated powers." This means Congress can promote the "general welfare" only through the enumerated powers, not by passing any law it damn well pleases. Again, this is the clear, plain English, obvious meaning of the "general welfare" clause, but since politicians will take whatever they can get away with, we need further, undeniable clarification that the powers of Congress are in fact limited.

This is just a start, but I will stop here for the sake of brevity.

How about our starting with a nationwide petition for congressional term limits. We know that they will never do it themselves and mindless voters will continue re-electing their incumbents. It appears that the corruption in our government is so deep that it is going to be up to "we the people" if anything is ever done about it. We need to clean house. Something has to be done more than just keep taking useless polls showing 9% approval ratings.

I have been thinking about this problem for a while. There are those who state that another Constitutional Convention right now would be a disaster, and I agree. When all is said and done, after the right-wing activists left D.C. and went home, the country would move left. That is because people simply do not understand the ideals of our country anymore, and they cannot apply what they do not fundamentally understand. They have to be taught.

I believe that the first thing that has to happen is that we have to change the culture, and I mean ideologically, not some simple-minded campaign of cleaning up violent video games and TV nudity. The average American must become aware that the fundamental framework from which to view politics is COLLECTIVISM VS. INDIVIDUALISM, and they must learn to think in those terms. Right now, they don't even know there is such a thing. That is step #1.

Once the cultural atmosphere is cleaned up, the second thing that must happen is that the right people are propelled into office. These must be true believers, not the spineless sell-outs we have today. Once in power, they will nominate and get appointed the right kind of Supreme Court Justices. These Justices then will begin a campaign of overriding over a century of absolutely inexcusable collectivist jurisprudence.

The third step will be to launch a series of grassroots movements to amend the language of the Constitution to close up the loopholes that the collectivists like to take advantage of, such as the interstate commerce clause.

Never Happen Again
The experiment that was America will likely never happen again in my lifetime. Tyranny is the natural state of mankind. If you look back over the millennia, you can see that humans' concept of government moved from tribalism to kings and emperors.

The idea of a strong executive that can solve problems without achieving consensus is the siren song that calls the populace of every nation. Legislative bodies (the peoples' representatives) are merely window dressing in most of the world. The 18th Century vision of Liberty will wane as materialism, licentiousness and a false sense of freedom replace it.

Surveillance will improve to the point where people will not dare voice opposition to those in power. There will be no channels of mass communication that go unwatched by the government.

A natural or man-made disaster will likely usher in an age of turmoil and balkanization as the fabric that binds American society is torn by squabbling special interests and retribution for past oppression. I also read Orson Scott Card's most recent article (it's on his website) about environmentalism. It was just where I thought it would be - MODERATE. Yes, we should care about the environment but there are enviro-nuts out there that don't want us to do anything - no nuclear power, no coal power, no solar power, no wind power. They always find a problem with something and nothing gets done.

Well, something needs to get done. Maybe we need a more serious crisis. I hate to say that, but it's true. We're too complacent. We've let too much go. We have to take it back.

We will be overrun by illegals. Their voting patterns, reinforced by liberal social programs, will change us---and not for the better. We are well on our way down the road to a socialist state. If Americans are to enjoy inalienable property rights, they must start by recognizing that one's own body is the most inalienable property of all. One cannot demand freedom from unlawful takings via environmental regulation, or eminent domain, and then deny sovereignty of individuals over the use, or misuse, of their own bodies.

Seek within yourselves for the hypocrisy that is destroying this great nation. The prime mover is the desire to control others. Abandon this one ideological folly and America will be reborn.

Thomas Jefferson thought it would be necessary to have a revolution every 20 years in order to keep government under control. The civil war demonstrated that revolutions are too costly. A peaceful reformation might be good, but where are the leaders?.

A Potential Revolution Every 4 Yrs
This is a rather silly column. The potential for political change comes every 4 years through elections (Every 2 yrs if you count mid-term elections). The US is a very complex and at times infuriating place to live -especially for activists. The Founders intentionally made rapid change quite difficult to enact from a political point of view, as to avoid the kind of catastrophic electoral swings we see in other nations.

Liberals have found the means to enact social/political/economic change without going to the polls. The Judiciary for the last 50 years has short-circuited many of the processes the Consitutional Framers enacted to prevent a tyranny of the majority or minority. That said, we still have the means to enact political change for the better through lawfull means. At some point in time, the electorate will respond.

One of the first things that must change is the reformation of the third branch of goverment. The Framers never intended for the Judiciary to weld so much unaccounted power. Within the Constitution there is the means to peacefully and legally limit judicial power. Judicial Review is a tradition begun by Justice John Marshall; however, it has run its course. Nothing in the Constitution even mentions judicial review. Congress is given powers of jurisidiction over the courts, and an amendment can severely limit the scope of the judiciary. Many of the so-called precedents can be rolled back, and perhaps we can be nation of laws again, and not a nation of lawyers and judges.

A very unPC solution
I agree that there is a problem, the country is going to fall apart at the rate we're going. Everybody thinks taxing the rich is the answer, only if they are not the rich in question. The problem with that solution is that you remove the incentive to work, and even the rich have limited resources. I won't even touch on the fairness of it, the Khmer Rouge committed atrocities in the name of fairness and equality.
That may be an extreme example, but I can't help thinking that the mantle of fairness excuses alot of behavior for people who want a handout at someone else's expense.
So, to the solution. Would it be cheaper and more effective to give all these people who want a handout a free ticket to the country of their dreams as long as they promise not to come back. There are already governments all around the world that do the things that are ruining our country. I can't claim credit for coming up with the idea, but I sure think it sounds good.I think people have every right to change their own lives. What they don't have is a right to change other people's lives for better or worse.

3 Step Plan

Saving our nation is simple. That is, if we have the fortitude to do so. If we want to save our nation we have but three goals that I believe are the most crucial.

The first is educating the public about the Federal Reserve. The Fed is owned by European banks. They back our currency with no hard assets yet charge the public interest on the money they create from thin air. There is no congressional oversight on the Federal Reserve. If congress has the authority to coin money, then the public must demand that they do so and that any foreign interest or ownership is forbidden. We are slaves to European bankers as long as they control our monetary supply.

The second goal is to awaken the public eye as to the reality of our energy sources. Offshore drilling and Anwar at in the public discussions but what about the Bakken Oil reserves where 300 years of untapped crude lie in the shale oil deposits. We must foster a environment where oil, wind solar and nuclear energy are used, thereby making ourselves independent from foreign energy sources. Simultaneously we must end corporate welfare/bailout benefits and let the market decide. We must also encourage alternative energy research and development from the public sector that are not currently in the energy business. We imported 70% of our oil last year alone, while just as early as 1970 we imported only 30%. We spent 600 Million on those imports.

Third, we must recognize the true enemy. When the Berlin Wall came down, Admiral Boorda looked me in the eye and said, "I'm afraid we haven't defeated Communism, but merely unleashed it." Those words haunt me to this day as I watch more and more capital flow into Communist China. We need to stop buying imported goods and shore up our own, despite the effect on the market.

Lastly, we need to elect leaders who will put these practices into legislation. Do we have the stomach for it.

How?
It's not going to be easy, undoing the big gov mess, but as with the oil price mess we have to stop talking and start acting.

A number have mentioned term limits which makes sense theoretically, but I suspect our members of congress might resist legislating.

As a first step I am in favor of voting AGAINST every incumbent on every ballot available. It would take some time to have an effect, but like drilling, the time is long past to take action.

True, education is key to fixing what ails America. However, the flaws inherent in the concept of central banking are beyond the understanding of most people. Therefore, any effort to educate the public about the dangers of the FED will prove futile.

Your second simple answer has the same drawback as the first. Most people do not, perhaps cannot understand markets beyond their personal experience in Publix.

The true enemy is not communism per se. The true enemy is human nature. We must abandon democracy in favor of true republicanism.

Lastly, we need to rebind our elected representative with the chains of the U.S. Constitution. We have the tools, we just have to summon up the courage to use them.

God forbid such a dismal state of affairs become neccessary, but were it to become neccessary, where would you stand?

.....I grew up in a tenement that used lead pipes to carry water and coal furnaces to produce heat and the pipes were wrapped in asbestos cloth ...I spent the summers at the beach and never used sun block ...and I am healthy as a horse in the middle of a sickly generation of pasty faced weaklings ...you know what Ray? ...I think the Country was better off when I was growing up ...

Creating a new United States
This is my fantasy. We declare that the South
did indeed win the civil war and then let them
(no, insist that they) become their own
separate country. Then we give Texas back to
Mexico and maybe if we are really nice to them
they will let us keep Austin.

Is it time???
Whether the answer is rhetorical or otherwise, the unfortunate answer is, yes!
Irrespective of where patriots come from (hicks, city dwellers, etc.) many realize we cannot continue to mouth constitution while our judiciary mouths social wants. If what was put in writing was not important, why have we had it for over 200 years. And if we cannot count on what was written, why have anything at all? Sooner or later an effort will be made to undermine or even eliminate our constitution, in favor of some sort of one world ideal. There will be many who will buy into this utopian myth. Then, when the suffering begins, they will cry out to be saved. Yet only the same individuals they currently mock will have the desire or ability to save them.
If what was founded here over 200 years ago is to come to an end, then I pray I am long gone. The result will reflect a slovenly people subjugated by those they have been taught to respect (read: obey), while those same persons will be laughing at the abject foolish adoration their "lessers" convey upon them.
It is time???? Yes! Do we have the will????
Only time will tell!

The efforts to abolish it are so obvious.
The bottom can be sliced off using open borders, free medical care, and enforced no-English policies. After all, it is just giving back what was taken through historical fluke from Mexico, right?

Next, the Western and Eastern Boards can be united with Canada.

I worry sometimes, and I do not like to think about how it gets demolished. Like my ancestors, I keep thinking of how to save it, against all odds.
