Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

That was one of Newt Gingrich’s most important messages in a brilliant speech delivered to the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington last month.

While the message may seem incongruous amid the fury of a presidential campaign, it is wise counsel nonetheless. Though he does not minimize the importance of the presidency, Gingrich rightly notes that, as the standard bearers for limited and local government, conservatives “should believe in a decentralized United States, where every elected official has real responsibility.” In light of this vision, Gingrich urges conservatives to devote energy, resources and intellectual capital to contests for the some 513,000 elected positions in the United States other than the presidency.

As you might expect, many conservatives have long-since taken this message to heart. For example, while Washington has bickered and bantered about our energy crisis, state leaders have taken concrete action to address the problem.

Consider the efforts of Chuck DeVore, a Republican legislator in the California State Assembly. DeVore recently stumped for a bill that would legalize nuclear power in the state. He was blocked by the Democrats, but now Governor Schwartzenegger announced to the Wall Street Journal that it is time for the Golden State to relook at nuclear power if it ever wants to meet energy demands for the future. DeVore has played a big role in bringing the issue out to the forefront and now he may gain real traction with the governor’s endorsement.

To be sure, conservatives may disagree on the merits of his nuclear bill. But that aside, we should applaud DeVore and his colleagues for taking action to address a problem that Washington refuses to confront in a serious manner. In order to maintain the strength of the conservative movement, we need to follow DeVore’s lead and advance state and local solutions for other issues such as healthcare, education and immigration.

In addition to heeding Gingrich’s advice to focus on state and local races, conservatives should also redouble our support for conservative leaders in Washington. But note that, like conservative efforts at the state and local level, this is a bottom-up approach rather than top-down from the White House.

Among those most worthy of our support are Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma and Representative Jeff Flake of Arizona. Both men have frontline foxholes in the battle over government spending.

Coburn’s most recent efforts center around a “hold”—a legislative maneuver—he placed on a bill which earmarked $10 million to build an interchange between Coconut Road and I-75 near Fort Meyers, Fla. In its original form, the bill included money for widening I-75, but arrived at the White House in a different form. In plain English, that means that the president received a bill different from the one passed by Congress—presumably because a few legislators sought to pack more pork into the bill. By placing a hold on the bill, Coburn has stopped its progress and forced an investigation. This is not terribly sexy or exciting work, but these are the fights conservatives must pick in order to change the spending culture in Washington.

Flake has joined the battle against earmarks in a different way, most notably by highlighting a different pork barrel project every week on his website. “Congressman Flake Spotlights Egregious Earmark of the Week,” is Flake’s unique way of shining the light on Washington’s spending practices. Flake includes the amount of the project, in addition to an often witty comment about the selection. Regarding the $750,000 for the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library in Hyde Park, New York found in the “President’s Day Edition,” Flake said, “those are some hefty library fines.”

Whether conservative action transpires at the local, state or federal level, it must revolve around big ideas. After all, when Americans clamor for “change,” what they really want are new ideas to solve problems—not empty platitudes heard from political candidates since time immemorial.

The temptation for every minority party is to become the party of “no.” But that will not be enough in a time when the country needs new public policy solutions. Instead, we have to be the party of “yes, but differently.” Indeed, that should be our answer when discussing healthcare, education and energy, among other issues: Do we want more Americans to have health insurance? Yes, but differently than Democrats. Do we want to protect the environment? Yes, but differently than Democrats.

In this regard, minority status has its advantages, as it frees the GOP to draw stark contrasts between a conservative and liberal vision for America.

Tax policy remains an area ripe for such contrast. Gingrich suggested that Republicans actively advocate for an optional flat tax. According to Gingrich, 84 percent of the American people would like to have a one-page tax form with an optional flat tax. Gingrich said that Republicans could “change the entire tax debate” by sending out mailers with a one-page tax form that said: “Hi. Would you like to just change the whole tax code and have the option, now you can keep the current code if you want. If you like record keeping and you think you need your deductions, and you want to pay your CPA and your tax accountant or attorney, that’s fine. But if you’d like simplicity, clarity, and certainty, you could have this.”

Gingrich believes this sort of approach appeals directly to the center-right instincts of the country. Indeed, every conservative should strive to see those very instincts manifested in actual policy. And no matter what the news may say, change like that begins a whole lot closer to home than 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Zerissenheit
A nation with no strong federal government, run by 513,000 local officials? The German language has a word for it: Zerissenheit---roughly translates as "falling-apart-hood".

Lilly:
That ain't what he said. Give us a break, go back to bed.

This is all well and good
But, being from Maine, the only way I can vote for a conservative is to either throw away my vote on a third party or independent, or move out of the State. The last time we had a conservative run for Governor was in 1994, when a conservative ran as a write in. He did get almost 5% of the vote even so.

Zerrissenhait, by the way, means brokenness, disunity. And does not describe the American system, which was built on a weak central government, with limited powers, in order to protect the freedom of the people. The American English term for "A nation with no strong federal government, run by 513,000 local officials" is Freedom.

Ther land of fruits and nuts
So Ahhnald wants CA to rethink nuclear power. LOL, if they didn’t do this at the height of their power problems they will never do it now. Note to all who are not familiar with it, Nuclear power is forbidden in CA now and all of the plants that they currently have must be decommissioned at their scheduled license expiration. During the energy crisis they had a gas turbine plant ready to go on line to help the problem but the eco-idiots said no and blocked it. That tells you right there where they are at. If you can’t get a gas turbine plant on line when you have rolling blackouts and electric bills on the order of $1500 per month you are not going to get anything.

Lilly what is the
German word for a strong central leader? Which of the two choices would be more likely to advocate for local groups?

lilly whats the german name

you have the hick ups.

Ah, Lilly....
The time for your ideas to blossom is sadly long past. Like with the death of Stalin, Idi Amin, Pol Pot, soon to be Castro, et al.

I think you are of an age where you should understand that the Constitution (capitalized out of respect) does not give rights to the people. Rights are given all men (this includes women, too, regardless of our failure for a time to recognize it) by their Creator. The Constitution specifically restrains the government from interfering with those rights.

So the question is, do atheists have rights?

Now take your valium and go back to sleep!

a reasonable approach
Since conservatives will not have a seat at the presidential race, we will take this advice and bring about transformation at the congressional and local levels.

Nothing McCain will do by November will change his disdain for us conservatives, and vice versa.

Pervasive and Unchecked Power
By definition we began as a Republic, which represents states combining together to provide primarily for the common defense, and for the unencumbered movement of goods and communications across their borders. Now, however, we have become a centralized democracy, and are no longer a Republic in any meaningful way. For many years, we have continued to use the word "state", but if you look up the word in the dictionary, you'll see that it no longer applies to what we call state's. Lilly, apparently, prefers what we have become as opposed to what we were. This, however, contradicts a central reality, which is that democracy operates best when it is close to the voters, who can directly influence it. Today, however, 5 out of 6 tax dollars collected by the States and the Federal government are collected by the Federal government, and the power has shifted in direct relationship to that fact. Washington can tax with little fear of voter reaction, whereas states are subject to the initiative and referendum, constitutions which mandate balanced budgets, and are held accountable. Washington has little or no accountability, which is why the special interests congregate in Washington. The writer, in turn, as well as Gingrich, should know that much of what one might expect to happen at the local level can be neither paid for, nor, in many areas, implemented unless Washington agrees. States are not only confined to spending $1 for each $5 spent by the central government, but a portion of that $1 is tied up in unfunded mandates ordered by the Central Government. And, if Washington does not agree, the affected bureaucracy's will with-hold the money they now provide to the states until the states comply. Gingrich is well intended - but he knows full well that Washington's power is pervasive and unchecked. There was a time when this worked reasonably well, but no longer.

I Agree
I HOPE Billary gets the nod thanks to super delegates. Brack Hussien Obama scares me!

Anyway, we KNOW WHAT Hildy is ans her capabilities. We know what John Boy is capable of doing. Not a whole lot of difference between the two.

I've been saying for months (thru various blogs) that is more important than ever for all of us to go to the polls and vote for good people to balance government and "roadblock" stuff the dimmies and whoever is POTUS might try to do.

Small towns dont matter...
... as long as the feds usurp their power.

What about defense?
.
You can't provide national defense at the local level, and with a party in the White House, bent on our defeat, one might ask if we even deserve to be a country any more.

Announce VP now...
It would benefit John McCain greatly if he announced his presidential ticket right away while Democrats are still slugging it out with each other.

Choosing Mitt Romney would appease the talk show hosts, add financial expertise to the ticket, add the vigor of a younger man with a presidential bearing who could take over if McCain falters, and rally conservatives.

Do it now and the public would soon see those two looking noble and doing and saying the things presidents do. To watch the McCain/Romney team going about expressing what's best for America in a time of war would make an indelible impression on the public mind; especially when Democrats are still slinging mud at each other and figuring out how to fix their self-created dilemmas.

And McCain/Romney might bring some excitement back to the GOP campaign!

Announce Dr. Romney for the McCain/Romney presidential ticket today and Democrats might never recover...

The Divided State Of America
Operated by a central government in violation of it's own charter, e.g. the Constitution. And no one seems to point this out.

Let's see how the SCOTUS rules on the D.C. Gun Ban - if they support it, we'll have incontrovertible proof that the Imperial Federal Government has jumped the shark and no longer accepts ANY constraint of reach or authority.

Late June. Watch for it. Stock up on food and ammo, it ain't gonna be pretty.

John Doe
The scam has been going on for a long time. The two parties have rigged the election process to assure themselves power. The Constitution, rule of law, and will of the people are used only as sound bites at the appropriate TV moment.

We have been duped into voting the lesser of two evils through the age old tactic of telling a lie over and over until it becomes accepted as the truth. The lie is that only "they" have the necessary wisdom, knowledge, and experience to govern, and we have no other choice, nowhere
else to go.

What we get from this doing the same thing again and again is not a different result, but increased partisanship as the battle for power rages. We will never see a different result until we recognize the DEM/GOP/MSM propaganda that keeps us in line and voting for the same old same old.

If you want to learn how the elites developed this scam and how they have us convinced that we must vote for them, I urge you to visit my website, JOEOLIVAFORPRESIDENT.ORG. Check it out, why not? The elites have already stolen our inheritance, and it is time we recalim it. If we don't do it this election, when are we going to get around to taking back what belongs to us? When, exactly? Thanks, Joe

Time for Atlas to Shrug
Hallelujah, Joe! We know. Damn, we know. That's why we're so distressed.

I have to agree Joe!
I've been telling people the 2 party system is a scam since before I could vote, because if you vote for the lesser of two evils, your still voting for evil.

Lord have mercy
What is all this jazz from newt..local people have to get involved and do things.! In nut-a-fornia we need to get rid of AHHNOLD!
This stuff(which i love) about local-state,city, county getting involved for the right cause reminds me of a true story. Many years ago EZRA TAFT BENSON ( a mormon ) was secretary of agriculture for Eisenhower addressed a congregation of mormons and said
"if all the members of the church and non members
that were asleep to the corruption in ALL levels
of government snored at the same time ....it would bring down the Rocky Mountains"! geeez, a mormon in government and the country is still a multi-religious nation, can you believe that!?
Golly gee..... smile!

Re. Bob and Redlac's posts.
In a lot of ways, it's quite late in the game, but we have to start somewhere. Since we aren't likely to have a genuine conservative running for POTUS, then it becomes very prudent to work for a genuinely conservative Congress, as well as all of the rest of State and local officialdom. Newt is right. Tip O'Neill himself said it: All politics is local.

Announcing VP now...
Justamere10 you make a great point. If McCain where to make an announcemnt now he could break through the current noise and create a little forward movement with his campaign. I am sure everyone agrees the choice is important. If he where to choose the wrong one he could completely deflate an already droopy campaign.

Sneetch's
Remember, you can’t teach a Sneetch. They have to experience enough pain and loss at their own greed to mature. The Sneetch’s still have plenty money to ride the star on/off machines in the hopes of getting that angle ahead of each other and the McMonkey McBean’s are still more than happy to provide the illusion of advancement.
Give them time. Soon Mr. McBean will ride off down the beaches leaving the Sneetch’s staring at their navels all dower and glum.
Keep up the good work warning them but it’s too early to have a decent effect. They’ll be ready after trying the left’s latest and greatest star on/off rides. Just be ready, I don’t think that this time it will end like the book. Sneetch’s can be down right dangerous with nothing left to lose.
