Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

The economic times we are living in are rougher and scarier than Rosie just before getting bikini waxed. With our national cash crisis comes a bazillion other ancillary spiritual and physical spin-off problems. As a columnist, talk show host and minister I’m now getting my inbox inundated with emails asking me how to spiritually field this mucked up mess we’re mired in (that’s how bad it is . . . people are asking me for advice).

What follows is my attempt to Dr. Phil you folks thru this crap-laden crunch we’re currently getting crushed by with seven hard learned lessons about God and life from the last 25 years of getting my butt kicked.

*Note to rabid atheists: This column (to become a book under the same title) is written to the heaven bound Christian who is currently going through hell. Yeah . . . it’s not for you. You might want to read Thus Spake Zarathustra or something for encouragement.

Here are seven observations and exhortations to help us keep plowing through tough times.

1. Jesus Promised Pain.

Jesus said in His first YouTube lecture, the Sermon on the Mount, that “storms” are coming to everyone, Christian or not. Note: Jesus didn’t say if storms come, but when they come. I know it sucks, but that’s reality. At least He gives us a heads up, eh? Also, Jesus didn’t forewarn us of tame storms on the horizon but “squalls” so violent that if you aren’t well founded on His word that your house could be destroyed. How we have built our lives is revealed in the storm.

2. Are You Gonna Cowboy Up or Lay There and Bleed?

Modern evangelicals by and large are an emasculated group of Nancies who make mountains out of molehills. We aren’t like our scriptural forefathers who were hardy and rowdy, tough followers of a rugged God. We are wussies pastored by wussies who grumble and complain when something pinches our flesh. This is a problem because demons love warfare, the flesh is incorrigible, and God’s demands are high and holy—and we love Pepsi. To get through hell the first thing the believer has got to do is shut up, suck it up and grow a pair.

3. It’s About Character, Stupid.

People have said over the years that there are two things you never want to see made, and that would be laws and sausage. I’d like to add a third to that list, namely Christians. Watching God process a believer from a dweeb to dynamite is about as fun as watching Blagojevich blow dry his hair. God’s not in the least bit interested in your carnal comfort but in His crafted character reflected in your life. Y’know . . . who you are at your core, who you are when no one sees, the habits of your heart, all that stuff that gets avoided by the modern feel good pulpits nowadays. Being originally from West Texas and growing up around a lot of cows and crops, I learned at an early age that cow crap helps make plants grow. God allowing the poop to hit the fan in our lives is the only way to produce the fruit He likes.

4. Don’t Blame God if You Brought This On.

I created most of the hell in my life that I have had to go through. I’d love to blame others—even God—but if I have to be honest, I spawned most of the monsters that I have had to deal with. Yep, my rebellious nature, my past hatred for God and His ways, and my innate stupidity has blown through the checks and balances of the Word of God, the conviction of the Holy Spirit, and the communion of the saints and has landed me facedown in the mud. There is no way I can fault God or the devil for 99.9% of the stuff that has happened in my life. What about you?

5. Solomon Says, “Relax.”

Solomon states in the book of Ecclesiastes that one of the keys to surviving the brutalities of life is to relax . . . chill . . . drink some wine . . . and have a good laugh. When one begins to go through the meat grinder of life, the first thing to vanish is joy. Joy is serious business because according to God, without it we’re oh so lame. You and I won’t be able to stand against difficulties without getting happy in God. Yep, without the gravity-defying virtue of joy cranking through our spirits we won’t be able to pray the fuzz off a peach. Fickle and vapid Christians disobey the command to rejoice in all things, and God means all things—this entails all non-yippee stuff. Consequently, they don’t transcend their transient trials, and God has no other recourse but to send them around the mountain again until they learn the power of laughing their butt off in the face of adversity.

6. The “Gift” of Hell.

Y’know, I hate to bring the Bible into this, but according to the book of James, the Christian is commanded to view trials as a gift. A gift? Please. Go sell crazy somewhere else, thus says the narcissistic saint of the new millennium. The postmodern, puny dwarf Christians only regard as gifts that which further augments their immediate wants and needs. To have something come into their life that would rock their self love boat is seen not as a gift but as a curse. However, according to God, that which is meant for evil can be turned into good if you realize that this little pain in the butt has come into your life to test your faith, purge your heart and reveal God’s mighty power. Joseph’s road to the throne was routed through prison, twice. He didn’t whine, cry, or become a Buddhist but rather embraced the gift of going through hell and subsequently was eventually exalted. How are you doing?

7. Once You’ve Made it Through “Hell”, Don’t Become a Jerk.

God exhorted Israel to remember that they used to be slaves in Egypt. It’s prudent for the believer and profitable to the church for the person who has weathered storms not to become an insensitive jerk but rather a sensei who shows others how to navigate life’s tricky streams. And don’t get too comfortable or cocky just because you’re currently out of this storm because the NOAA weather system says another tropical storm is brewing out in the gulf, if you know what I mean . . .

Giles: Pretty much covered it from a

30,000 foot overview. But a column or two might be in order for EACH of the seven points.

It's hard to tell if this thread is going to turn into a food fight, or if the secular liberal "regressives" are going to stay away from this one. Hmmmmm?

WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH
yes! Good essay, and a call to all of us to take it in stride...whatever it is that's coming. We rely on our faith. And if I may suggest...turn off the evening news. We're getting fed a bunch of bogus info anyway. We are not to know what is really going on, so why waste our time watching the pablum news. Why not study, read, learn a new instrument instead?

Not from me, Anne
Doug has a way of saying things plainly and to the point and if the God haters wanna fight, they'd better take it up with God. It's a no win situation even it they don't believe.
Having finally gotten somewhere up the mountain from a very deep valley I know whereof I speak.
I've had several tests that I haven't scored any A+'s on over the past 30 odd years when my husband and I finally got serious about our faith. He had the stronger foundation than I had, having attended Christian Day School and Lutheran High school;he's now a non denominational minister. It just took me longer to accept that God was working in and on me.
My major problem was learning to trust, something I have struggled with since a child due to serious illnesses. And God has been teaching me to trust Him through His 'storms',
it's not easy but I am getting there.
Doug is correct, we need some strong preachers who won't sugar coat the Gospel, but preach
the Truth.
I believe we are suffering and will suffer as a nation because we have turned from Him and He gave us a chance in this election, to choose life or death in the persons of two candidates,
SARAH and her prolife values; and O with his
anti life support of murder of the most innocent of God's children, preborn and abortion survivors. The people chose death and we are getting 'death' in our economy, jobs and
only He knows what else it will take to wake us up and get us on our knees in repentence.

Tea Party: I hear you. :-) I always say

that God has a way of smacking me up-side the head to get my attention... And thank God... He does!

I agree, Doug is right, we need some strong preachers who won't sugar coat the Gospel, and he's written some good columns on that very subject.

We used to have a priest in my old parish who would always say, "There is a reason God called them 'The Ten Commandments' and NOT 'The Ten Suggestions!'" No wiggle room!

But, you've got to admit, it is going to be interesting to see how (or if) some of our resident secular regressives and agnostics and atheists will deal with this. Giles didn't leave any wiggle room either.

Hope you had a very blessed Christmas, and best wishes for a blessed and good New Year.

GOING THROUGH HELL
WELL FOR THE MOST PART, THE SO CALLED CHRISTIANS HAS BROUGHT A LOT OF THIS CRISIS UPON THEMSELVES!WHEN WE JUST STAND BY AND WATCH 4,000 THOUSAND ABORTIONS DAILY,WATCH GOD GET KICKED OUT OF SCHOOLS,COURTHOUSES,AND EVEN SOME CHURCHES;WHAT DO YOU EXPECT? TIMOTHY WAS RIGHT; 1TIM 4:1 2TIM 4:3-4
KJV

Don't forget tithing...not.
I think the incessant harping about our "obligation" to tithe is covered by Doug's point #1. I stumbled across the 700 Club just this morning and they were talking about how important it was to tithe if one wanted happiness and prosperity. Wants to make me puke.

If the tithe could be found in the New Testament you'd think that preachers could figure out a way to work that into the sermons rather than using obscure passages from Deuteronomy and Malachi.

Jesus and the New Testament writers say that God wants 100% from His believers, not just a measly 10%, no matter what happens, and as Doug points out, suffering and pain may be part of the package.

Doug is Right
I have been saying for years God is going to turn his back on America if we don't go back to our roots. The worse thing we ever did is take the Bible out of the schools. Try to get in a Christian School there are waiting lines, what does that tell you?
Millions of dead babies, Jesus must be heart broken. He gave us choices and I cannot in todays society believe a woman or man cannot use protection. And as for our new Messiah-elect voting for late term abortion. He and all his ilk should have to sit through the horrific films I have seen of the babies being ripped apart. They should show that in school along with how to put on a condum.
GOD HELP US ALL

Well
That's more like it, Pastor Giles.

Cowboy up!
BRAVO!

Romans 8:28...
...always worked(works) for me. Didn't want to quote it. With all of the different translations out there, from what I've seen, most popular Bibles ("message" not included) convey basically the same thing.

Oh, and..
...my brother has a nice site:

http://www.talkingbible.org/

Hmmm....
Boy, there is something about Mr. Giles writing that just doesn't bear witness with me as being God inspired. He speaks truth for sure but he also speaks with such sarcasm and anger it makes me wonder if he is truly in tune with God. God hates sin but is never disrespectful or sarcastic with humankind. It seems to me that Mr. Giles is both disrespectful and sarcastic. Maybe its just me.

Happy New Year, Anne
Have no fear, the trolls will be here!
Great column, thank you Doug!

P.S.
I truly love Jesus and I am thankful for the fact that He died for me in spite of that I was hateful and unbelieving on every level. His grace is sufficient for me.

When I am low...
I recall that the Bible says that ALL things work to the good of those who love the Lord. To me, that means that I can either let adversity defeat me or I can gather strength from it and rise above it.

Sometimes God removes something from our grasp so that our hands will be open to receive a greater blessing.

Happiness is a state of mind and there is always something to be thankful for and happy about.

I'm all for praising the Lord,Doug...
...provided you also pass the ammunition. It takes both.

Will @ 11:52pm
Don't be put off by the style of Mr. Giles' message. I might not have said it that way but his underlying message is true: God is sovereign. He is in control and He is working all things out for our good. Paul doesn't say all things are good, but that God causes all things (the good and the bad) to work out for our good. We shouldn't fret about the state of the economy, the fact that our country has just elected the most liberal president ever, etc. We get the leaders we deserve and it should bring us to our knees in prayer for God to have mercy on our country and bring revival.

Andrea...and Will
Will, Andrea had good advice. Also, I suggest you read some of Jesus' language when he is addressing the religious leaders of his day. He doesn't spare feelings.

If Consistency was a Virtue

Barack Obama would be the most virtuous man ever elected President of the United States.

Barack Obama has 'Consistently' shown bad judgment in his choices of friends, alliances and associates.

Rod Blagojevich - whom Obama campaigned for and endorsed - is just one of the many 'Nefarious' characters which Barack Obama has aligned himself.

Tony Rezko - convicted felon - and Obama had several buisness dealings.

Obama started his political career in the home of Bill Ayers - unrepentant terrorist.

Ali Abunimah head of a radical Palestanian group received contributions from Obama.

Barack Obama chose his Mentor and spiritual adviser, Jeremiah 'God Damn America' Wright.

The list seems endless - read about more of them on my blog.

http://hisfacts.blogtownhall.com/2008/10/21/obamas_radical_ and_communist_alliances.thtml

Barack Obama has consistently 'Chosen his friends Carefully' according to him.

What consistency - What judgment - Barack Obama has shown!

William
I think what you are sensing is that Mr. Giles does a lot of what he does, still coming from "the flesh".

It's a problem with a lot of the leadership these days. We simply no longer know much about its tendency to mimick the real thing, having so few right examples of it anymore.

At least, though, this time his message addresses real issues.

"He must increase, but I must decrease"
John 3:30

A couple of things
In response to jjones regarding tithing...you're right... I have always thought tithing made God look like a tax collector
or the mafia wanting protection money. Preachers perpetuate this because how else will they build their contemporary churches, life centers and build waterfalls and rivers in the churches? They act as though the free gift of salvation is not enough to attract the unbeliever, they have to try to attract them with man-made buildings and beautiful church campuses (I've visited Willow Creek).
Doug Giles wrote about how evangelicals are wussies. I have to agree with that. Men and women were once strong enough to allow God to handle their problems--they patiently waited upon Him. Then here comes Christian Psychology. Everyone is running to a paid psychologist to handle the problems that God said He would do if we just step back and allow him. We no longer blame ourselves for our shortcomings...we have to go back into our past to find out why we are doing it. Then the blame is always on someone else. The 7 deadly SINS are now diseases. Not our fault at all. Medicating the mind is not the answer. We need to face the facts and stop listening to those pathetic preachers who are guiding us away from the facts.

We Need More of This
With so much warm and fuzzy religion out there, this reminds me of the character-buildng power of the Confessional. God gives tough love!

Nam 65-66 Reply 17
Roger that! We still need to keep our powder dry! MickeyG USMC 63-69 Nam 65-69

Roger that MickeyG & Nam 65-66
Sorry for taking you quote Mickey, but you are exactly correct.

Vizer, roger that!!

Our pastor does not and has not ever preached on tithing or beat us over the head with a bible about tithing. We give as we can from the heart, and he (the church) in turn give over 30% of our tithes to missions. He preaches the word, and brings us a message from God, always. He lives (20+years) in the same parsonage all other have lived in. Thank God and our membership, we dont have fountains and waterfalls, etc... We have a growing congergation and now have 2 morning services plus Saturday night service(2 years now) instead of flopping down a bunch of money to add to the building. Eventually we will have to build in order to serve God's purpose. I know it will not be a bunch of shine and bling, it will be built to serve God.

I am blessed to be able to attend a Spirit filled, God fearing, God guided, Bible Believing, no frills, no nonsense Chruch.

We drive about 55miles on way from the ranch to go to church to hear God's message and to serve Him, not so everyone else can see us going to church, it's sad but many others attend other churches just for that reason

Baci, missions
are spreading God's word and taking Him to places that dont have TV, cell phones, internet. We are trying, but it aint going to last forever. The rapture is headed our way.

"better be ready"

You're Still Arrogant Doug
As an atheist, that little quip that this is only for Christians who have a chance at getting into heaven was not only offensive, but downright mean. I thought Jesus was supposed to preach love and tolerance? Not condescending attacks on people who don't agree with you. Because of this you have absolutely no credibility except to those who share your beliefs. And that does no good whatsoever because it just reinforces ideas people already agree with.

This is why Obama won. He tried to make himself out to be a man who was open to other views. Men like McCain, Bush, and everyone else in the Christian Right appeal only to those who already agree with them and that number doesn't grow when you just keep insulting those who don't agree with you.

I still don't see you as a bad person, but you seriously need to exercise some manners when it comes to appealing to others. But if you want to just keep preaching to the choir, that's fine but don't expect to make an impact.

Jesus said
I am the way, the truth and the light..No man cometh to the Father but by me. Jesus is our mediator, our bridge, our advocat. That's why he was so disliked. He spoke the truth. Doug also speaks the truth. Obama tickles your ears while being dishonestor ignorant. Jack you need to thnk about that, If there are no absolutes, then there is nothing. We can't make God into what we would like him to be. He is who He is. The opportunity to come to Christ is there for everyone, including you, Jack. Thats not being exclusive. Thats not being mean. You are the one doing the rejecting. You reject Christ. Christianity is not a religion of works, like all other religions are. If you don't want something, how can you blame anyone else or call them mean spirited. But you are right, there are less Christians as there always has been, even in Jesus' time. He wasn't popular. Most people didn't want or express a need for him. But still he died for all. As I said before --forgiveness is a gift , its free . We either accept itor we reject it. Its all up to YOU, as it was up to me.

Wimps as Pastors
Have you noticed how so many of them talk like primary school teachers in a classroom of dolts?
Huckabee is an example. We won't be led out of the wilderness until we get some gutsy men as leaders.

Jack
Jesus said and I quote: "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No man comes to the Father but by Me". John 14.6

"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son; that whoever should believe in Him will have everlasting life...Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. John 3.16, 18.

No tolerance there for anything that smacks of anything men can do to earn heaven. Either He did it all, paid it all, and rose again, and we need only believe Him, or there's something we can yet do to add to what He has done. Trouble is, what would it be, how much would it take, and how would you know you'd succeeded?

shubi said
"We won't be led out of the wilderness until we get some gutsy men as leaders."

Huckabee is not a wimp imo. Who would you suggest as a present day gutsy leader?

The atheists say
There is no god. But even the atheist has a god. It may be money, it may be him/herself, humanism. For most people its humanism. They celebrate humanity. That's why tolerance (COMPROMISE) is preached. Their god is in their own image. There is some thing or some one they elevate and look up to in their lives.
There are no real atheists. Compromise and humanism is what has appealed to so many about Obama. They will not see that, they can't.
Thats what turns me off about him.

Also, I don't understand how I can compromise on the issue of abortion. This is murder --we don't tolerate other murders(well some are). And the gays can marry all they want, God will deal with them. Thats not my job. But to shut my mouth about abortion is to be an accomplice.

Our country, the world, actually, will not get better. We can't stop the downhill slide. Its in the Bible, the world will get worse. God is being patient, he's allowing it to happen and then one day, the fertilizer will hit the fan, we will be gone and those left will be appalled at what they have brought upon themselves.

So go ahead and call me crazy. Fine with me--I just hope you see in time.

For me......
I had to overcome rebelliousness and pride. And what a combination!!!! Also, having been brought up non-Christian, it was a matter of ignorance. And, miracle of miracles, when I look back at pre-Christian years, it becomes apparent that God was there all the time, protecting me and giving me His grace.

Now, with Christ, I can walk forward and not be burdened by my past. Now I respect every person and what he/she brings to the table, no matter if he/she is a Christian. Now I don't have to carry my burdens by myself. Now I've learned to wait for God's timing. Now I can see that God is in everything.......and like the old tune says, "Nothing will happen to me today without passing through the Father's hands."

I had to admit that I could not be self-reliant, I could not be in charge all the time, and that I needed God's help every minute of every day. I had to admit that every human being is valuable in his/her own right. I have learned to turn to Jesus "just as I am, without one plea." I have learned that I deserve nothing, but, by God's grace, I have everything.

And most of all.....admitting my weakness has allowed God to be stronger in me.....and has led to a more perfect peace for me......and I'm sure for those I love, also.

Going Through Hell
I like Giles blunt and direct but, ultimitely, wise articles...certainly not for you majority whiners, though!

Note to Doug
This article is nothing but warmed over Stoic advice. Most non-believers will have no problem with it and wish more Christians would actually follow it. So your warning that it's for only Christians is ill founded.

one point of objection
CocaCola is superior to Pepsi. Beside providing a less sweet, more adult flavor, it is also a champion Chrome cleaner.

Donjindra
Very interesting critique.

On further reflection, this time I have to agree with you.

William
Don't be put off by Doug Giles' speech, that is how we talk in West Texas. He is just putting it in plain talk, West Texas style.

Cowgirl'd Up & Ready
As of 1993, when I had a dramatic encounter with the Holy Spirit and angels. BTW, for the atheists out there who love to post on chat boards their favorite mantras..."there is no God...the Bible is a book of myths...Christians are weak-minded..."..etc, etc..(trying desperately to convince themselves that they're right), well-you're just too late with that advice.

I already know Him. I've already seen miracles. He's already saved my life. I've already experience His Supernatural Presence. I've already read and come to an understanding of Bible prophecy and see it being fulfilled. I've already seen Him working in my life, my friends' and family's lives, and others'.

Once a person finds out who they are in God, they can't be shaken. Many people believe in Him-there are nearing two billion Christians on the earth (nice try, though, Poster who said we're becoming a "minority"), but it's when you really find out who YOU are in HIM, that you are the strongest. So- so much for weak-mindedness. The weak are the unbelievers. They will find this out as the days and months go by.

But the Good News is that they don't have to stay that way. God loves them just as much as He loves us. He made the Way for them to spend Eternity with Him. It's their choice. I pray that they will make the right one. They will never be sorry.

Jack
Obama won because the MSM campaigned 24/7 for him and dishonestly called their ads news, and because of ACORN-enabled vote fraud, and because of mindless judge-him-by-the-color-of-his-skin voting by many blacks, and because McCain ran the lamest campaign since Dole in '96, and because the current crop of voters are the most uninformed in history.

Storms Brewing
There's a storm brewing and it is not in the Tropics. It is right here in Chi-town. If the American News Media did their jobs,it would be swirling right around the Clinton / Obama Administration.

We all know that won't happen. They have protected 'him and his' for two years and will not start doing their jobs at this late date.

Does anyone else notice that when a Republican has a misstep it is called a SCANDAL 24/7 by the media. Let a Democrat do the same and it is labeled an error of judgement,if it is mentioned at all.

Most of the 'hell on earth' we are going through and will go through could be alleviated by a fair and square media, not an Ad Agency for the DNC.

Important Points
Doug's message is what every new Christian should hear.

Then we would not have so many pew sitting spiritual weaklings.

It's time for more
Time to pray, fast and give. Give God your first fruits, pay your tithes and start a fast at the beginning of the new year. A man that fasts will never be poor or in need. This country needs more than prayers, it needs prayer warriors and some good old fashioned 21 day Daniel fasting. Move to a deeper realm with God, give something up for 21 days.

My entire church plans to start our fast on 1-12-09 how about yours?

Victoria
“I already know Him. I've already seen miracles. He's already saved my life. I've already experience His Supernatural Presence.”

Care to elaborate?

“The weak are the unbelievers.”

Your opinion, or do you have anything to back this up?

Doug's Style
Alaskans, who are not known for beating around the bush, would normally like his style. Sort of reminds me of reading some of those old-style shouting preacher sermons. And, then there's Jesus, who called the Pharisees "white-washed tombs." Not exactly all polite and friendly.

I do, however, object to the rip-off of Charles Stanley without attribution "God cares more for your character then your comfort." That's okay, though. It was a great line, worth reusing.

As for tithing, the Old Testament tells us to and Jesus affirmed every book of the Old Testament except Esther. Also, if we don't give money to the church we attend, it's hard to keep the lights and heat on. Some can't afford 10 percent, others can afford a lot more. The point is that every church members should pay something to their church's upkeep and ministries. The 700 Club, however, is NOT a church! It's religious entertainment. If you are already tithing to your local church and can afford to send something to non-church ministries or religious entertainment, that's your choice. Bottom line is that 100 percent of what you have was given to you by God; you shouldn't quibble over a dime on a dollar back to do some of His work. Just make sure you're giving it to a church that is actually doing God's work and not just lining staff pockets.

A message for Christians?
I like what Doug has to say in much of the article, but I don't think crude references to a woman's vaginal area makes him a rugged and "tough" Christian.

I believe wordly is a good word for the way he opened up this article, not to mention the fact that it is a seemingly pathetic attempt to be seen as "cool". If I wanted to read language like this I would go to some fascist liberal website.

I usually love your articles Doug, but come on.

Where, Suzanne?
I've read, and reread Giles' piece, and am unable to validate the accusation in your first paragraph. If anything, it's just the opposite.
