Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

Could your daughter handle herself if she were attacked by some thug? Would she be able to leave a “Silence of the Lambs” boy incapacitated or, if necessary, kill him during an attack?

Should some perp cross the line by threatening my daughters’ lives, I would have no problem personally double tapping the center mass of the moron with my S&W Airlite. In my family, I am alpha dog: provider, protector, hunter, and hero.

I do, sadly, realize that I am not omnipresent and that my daughters are going to have to rely upon themselves as the first line of defense.

Here’s the road I have taken: I’ve told my chicas (since life is so chock-full of male trolls) not to put themselves in the path of a bunch of ham-fisted d-bags when they know it’s just a matter of milliseconds before one of the inbreeds says or does something that’s going to escalate into a butt kicking.

Secondly, I’ve made sure my daughters have the attitude to successfully send a “stay away” message in whatever form necessary to stifle male mooks. I pump my daughters full of attitude. Nowadays everything smells, so attitude sells.

Now, because I do not believe in anyone being at the mercy of the merciless, my girls have been training in martial arts (namely Jiu-Jitsu) from an early age—and not just any Jiu-Jitsu school, but the world-famous Valente Gracie Jiu-Jitsu school.

Pedro Valente is the chief instructor at Valente Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in Miami, Florida. Seeing that he is an expert in kicking butt and training others to mangle the malevolent, I asked him to add his two cents to this column. Below is our exchange regarding training girls to fight.

DG- How does Jiu-Jitsu help women?

PV- The techniques of Jiu-Jitsu are not based on strength and athleticism, but rather on an understanding of the human anatomy and the laws of physics and their application with the objective of offsetting the power of an attacker.

Jiu-Jitsu is referred to as the triumph of human intelligence over brute strength. Since women in general are physically weaker than men, they can make special use of these techniques in order to level the playing field in a critical situation. When properly trained in the art of defending against any imaginable physical attack, a woman feels confident that she can survive an act of aggression by a stronger and more powerful man.

DG- At what age should a girl start her training?

PV- The younger, the better. Jiu-Jitsu is a great tool to increase the confidence and self-esteem of any child. At a young age, girls are frequently picked on by bullies, and these situations often create psychological trauma that can last a lifetime. Girls who are trained in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu have the poise to confront bullies and not be intimidated by them. The sooner they start, the easier it is for them to develop the reflexes and the automatic reactions that will enable them to apply the techniques naturally when they grow older. Jiu-Jitsu is a natural art, and since kids are not physically strong, the learning process is faster and simpler when they are younger. My sister started learning Jiu-Jitsu when she was two years old.

DG- How long before you can train a normal and healthy girl to defend herself?

PV- The longer a girl trains, the more prepared she is going to be to face an attacker. Since women usually give up a significant physical handicap to men, they need to master each technique in order to use it effectively. However, after completing a fifty-lesson course, any woman will have the elements to defend herself against any man in any situation. After that it’s a matter of continual practice with the objective of maximizing her odds of surviving an assault.

DG- Can a small girl really defend herself against a big guy?

PV- Yes, because the moves taught in Jiu-Jitsu are not dependent upon physical strength. Therefore, a girl will learn, through the techniques of Jiu-Jitsu, how to neutralize a bigger opponent’s physical strength and actually use it to her advantage in many cases.

DG- What are the three most important things you teach a girl who wants to stop a goon?

PV- First, speak with confidence and be assertive. Be outspoken giving yourself permission to be rude. Don’t be nice to strangers. If you decide to attack your aggressor, do so quickly and with complete conviction. Attackers are most often cowards and prefer to attack easier and more submissive targets.

Second, don’t panic! Stay as relaxed as possible and wait for the perfect opportunity to counterattack with the Jiu-Jitsu technique that best fits the situation you are in.

Third, always be alert and prepared. Remember that an assault does not have a set date and time like a professional fight, for example.

DG- Can you relate a couple of examples of girls the Gracies trained who were actually attacked and how what you taught them caused them to disable their assailant?

PV- Several female Jiu-Jitsu practitioners have related situations where they were able to avoid an assault through their assertive behavior and without the necessity of any physical confrontation. The confidence attained by girls who practice Jiu-Jitsu is so great that, in many cases, just the firmness in their eye contact causes their attacker to pick an easier target. Most attackers back out when they feel that the woman is willing to fight back and defend herself.

But there have been examples both in Brazil and the US where women have escaped physical assaults using the proven techniques of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. One time, in Brazil, a rapist who was armed with a knife took a Jiu-Jitsu practitioner to the ground in a secluded area, and as he prepared to perform an act of sexual violence the woman applied an arm lock and managed to run away.

DG- What are the top ten things you would tell a girl to do who has no training in Jiu-Jitsu or any other martial art?

1. Trust your instincts. If someone looks suspicious to you, leave and get to a safe place. It’s better to be cautious than wrong.

2. Be familiar with your limitations and how you react under stress. Some women respond effectively by physical struggle or fighting; others by running; others by distraction, screaming, or talking. Know your personal style and get self-defense training to change or enhance that style if necessary.

3. Realize that anyone who gets upset that you are suspicious of them may not have your best interest in mind.

4. Be aware that assaults, including rape, can happen to anyone, anywhere, anytime. Always be aware of people and the environment around you.

5. Don’t drink alcohol or use illegal drugs. Feel free to say no to anything that makes you uncomfortable.

6. Don’t use a weapon unless you’ve been trained to use it.

7. When walking, running, or jogging, don’t use headsets—you can’t hear someone approaching or signaling you.

8. Always lock your car, even if you’ll only be out a few minutes.

9. Always lock the car when in it, so no one can open the doors.

10. If you think you’re being followed by another car, don’t pull into your driveway. Drive straight to the nearest police or fire station and honk your horn. Don’t leave your car until you’re sure it’s safe.

This year, parent, give your daughter the gift that says you care, the gift of being trained to open up a big can of whup a** if need be! Merry Christmas.

The more failed Liberal social programs, the greater the need for self Defense training.

The more Liberal Judges on the bench, the more criminals walk the streets.

A FEW THOUGHTS ON THE SUBJECT
In a sane place, women are highly unlikely to be prosecuted for carrying and legitimately using a concealed weapon regardless of what the law says.

Men and women who are afraid of guns are so because they do not know much if anything about them. Superb education is available to all.

Women are naturally much better shots than are men. No one really knows why. So, teach a woman or girl how to use a small gun very well and she will be more than able to defend herself.

I recommend the .380 automatic for everyone because of its high degree of concealability, its light weight, its adequate stopping power, and its superb quality as made by such great companies as Walther of Germany. If you are as good a shot as you should be, you can take out anyone with a little .380 quite easily within the range at which virtually all gun fights are fought (8-12 feet).

It's true that traditional weight training does not build endurance; however, bouncing vigorously on a trampoline (large or small) for five minutes five times a day does the job to perfection rather quickly. I take 12 capsules of Astaxanthin at intervals daily to enhance my endurance big time, and taking 800IU of chromium picolinate daily with L Carnitine and the right kind of weight training has added usable strength you would not believe.

There is no inherent contradiction between the teachings of Christ when interpreted intelligently and the practice of self defense. We are supposed to turn the other cheek only when such would not lead to our injury and when doing so would provide a lesson in unselfish love to the other person. That is rarely the case.

We are probably approaching a time in American history when the better part of wisdom dictates that we should all be living in one of the states where carrying a gun is legal. It could become a matter of life and death...and that rather quickly.

Good article and comments
I taught my kids from a young age how to defend themselves and proper use of weapons. It is a lifestyle mental attitude change.

My daughter has taken it farther as a Marine, she now knows more weapons as well as being an instructor in MCMAP (Marine Corps Martial Arts Program) yet she continually tells me that it is a mental outlook that is projected not just the knowledge.

Everyone, not just our daughters, should be taught the outlook, that we have the right and will to protect and defend ourselves and our loved ones.

Now that is a true American lifestyle as opposed to the liberal, nanny-state lifestyle where everyone is a victim in their outlook.

When people comment on how bad the crime is these days, and they wish for the good old days when everything was safer, I remind them they are safer today then ever in History.

marital arts?
When I glanced at the title I though he said marital arts, not martial arts.

I think an American woman would be much better off with some training in marital arts.

I think I'm gonna rent "The Mission" tonight.

Thanks pistol
About that outlook on life... I notice your screen name is "Pistol". I think we have alot in common.

I would like to echo the...
sentiment about Krav Maga. I take it and it is a marvelous system. You are taught a good common sense approach to self defense that anyone can use. Krav Maga also teaches great life lessons and will help to get you into shape.

Chuck, Don't remember that one
Karate for Christ...huh...it must have passed me by.
Chuck Norris is a preacher now I believe but don't quote me so I guess that works.

I have trained for 30 plus years and none of my instructors have gone against anything I learned at Sunday school...that's what I meant.

Sad?
Sad?

A pastor's job is to lead them in doing what is good in God's eyes and to protect his flock from what is evil. What would be sad is if a pastor neglected the protect part by teaching them only about the spiritual part of the evil.

Evil has physical agents in the material world -- the predators who would do harm to the innocent.

My beef is strictly with the unrealistic expectation that any random girl could be trained into some sort of invulnerable ninja-lady when the truth is that the average woman is always going to lose a physical fight with the average man and that the trained fighting woman is still going to lose if the guy is enough bigger than she is.

But then hyperbole is part of Giles's shtick -- a literary tool to help get his point across.

Several of Christ's apostles had swords. Since there is no mention of any of them going out to buy swords BEFORE Christ told them to sell their coats to get swords if that was what it took we have to assume that they'd been carrying all the time (except when Christ specifically told them to go out without their normal equipment), and thus Christ must have approved.

Christ chose Peter to found his church. A tough guy from the docks probably didn't get the nickname "Rocky" by cowering under the bed when danger threatened. Why should today's pastors be any different?

What a sad day
The sadder day is when one doesn't take self-defense and the defense of one's loved ones into one's own hands.

I started taking Krav after hearing about yet another church shooting. I'd like to have a a gun handy, but I live in (quite literally) communist Los Angeles.

Remember, when crime comes to call, the police will not be there. The only people at a crime-in-progress are the criminal and you. When it happens to you (or yours), and it will, will you be ready?

Edna
Back in the early 70's, during the height of what was then called "The Jesus Movement" there was a group promotong something called "Karate For Christ".

To this day, I still get a wry chuckle at the incongruity of it.

Kaylie
It's a common misconception that the martial arts are about fighting.. no they're not, the true to art feels deep regret in using their skills same as a christian would in defending their church. It's about defense from attack not about doing the attacking.

I know many Instructors who are probably the most anti violent people on the planet yet if they had to defend life and limb they are more than up to the task.

Nothing in a good martial arts school goes against anything you've learned. Respect life and others, take care of yourself and others and kindness to those not as fortunate as yourself..

Don't worry about mixed messages your daughters will be fine with yours and the instructors guidance.

Safety?
Can see your point of view.
Sorry it has come to this extreme in our society.
Please promise you will monitor the phylosophy
of most of the Asian people. In other words tell the instructor what part of this you want them exposed to. Only the physical aspects not the other parts and ways of thinking or you will have some very confused Christian Daughters.

tdkblk
I'm not sure which I am sadder for. The fact that it HAS come to this or that it is someone who thinks he has been called to the ministry that is advocating it.

If he wants to be a sociologist, he should be a sociologist and leave the higher calling to others better suited for the task.

Gladiators and other things
"What a sad day
when its a pastor leading us in talking seriously about having our daughters learn martial arts."

True, but Jesus says; greater love hath no man than when he will lay down his life for that of another.

We train for that possibility. Sorry to say that it is appearing to be more likely as time goes on. But when you have the knowledge and the confidence to do exactly that, my experience is that you are less likely to have to do it. No guarantees, but better than the alternative.
Same for the 'gladiator" thing.

Jim: you wrote: "I said, “Are you afraid to say no when they ask for a second piece of candy?” There was much laughter from my audience."

The job of a parent is 1: bring them to our class to teach them to accept no for an answer if you can't teach them yourself. 2: Then do your job as a parent and say no. 90% of our parents, though, already know that, so they bring their students to us so they can have a common reassuring experience in the world we live in today.

I like your walking stick idea.

Have a great day, going to start watching football!

Some strange reactions
I think it is great that Doug is training his girls to defend themselves. I think some of the reactions here are strange (basically calling him behind the times or instilling a false sense of security into his duaghters). I am a black belt in brazilian jiu jitsu, have a black belt in karate, kick boxed and teach MMA. First and foremost, most people on the street know very little if anything, so no matter what you do, it helps. Doug's recommendations about avoiding a problem are probably more important than the training though.

Physical Perfection.

This is not too far off the subject:

What physical activity is the most difficult, the most exceptional, the most perfect that a human body can perform?

Don’t consider the brilliance of a brain by its self. To hit a ball, to run a mile in 10 seconds, takes brainpower in addition to physical power.

Of course we must exclude sexual activities, and the perfection of a beautiful lady, just being a beautiful lady.

I am not asking for a reply as such, just add a word or two at the end of your reply on some other subject.

my Sympathy Stick

I don’t know anything at all about tae kwon do, Tae Kwon Do, and those other things you mention.

But how many of you have defended yourself and won a bout, in a ancient Roman Amphitheater, like the Gladiators of years ago?

Well, one time my Sweetie and I were walking in the Amphitheater in Nimes, France. (Been there 4 times!!). When the four Gypsy boys tried to get my back pack, one swing - a miss - of my walking stick, known these days as my Sympathy Stick (doors open, people step aside, wow!), and off they went.

The other day as I walked past one of those schools with little kids in bright robes or uniforms rolling all over the floor, there was a mother coming out the door, with one uniformed boy on each side. As usual, there were several other parents watching the action through the window.

I said, “Are you afraid to say no when they ask for a second piece of candy?” There was much laughter from my audience.

What a sad day
when its a pastor leading us in talking seriously about having our daughters learn martial arts.

I think it's too general to say...
That anything permenant can be accomplished in 50 lessons

Many people can't develop muscle memory enough in that time for it to be effective.

Practice, practice, practice, for a life time will do it.

Theory is great and it can be achieved in a 50 lesson application however physical application can't even focusing on a single technique for that 50 lessons.

It's a false sense of security.

"Subject: The fifty lesson gambit"

I agree that it would be very valuable to do the Gracie thing. I just think to make it effective, you have to keep training and practicing.
In everything in life.

The WTF Olympic sparring thing that we do is a small part of the overall picture.

We teach a total lifestyle that allows our junior students to create a mindset that lets them learn math, reading, writing, social skills, common sense, morality, treating other people with respect because you can afford to. etc. If your grades are not where they should be, you don't train with us etc. What did you do for your parents today, questions like that. That is the package that we teach and will continue to teach no matter what anyone else does. Our students, both junior and adult, can vote with their feet if the disagree by taking their feet elsewhere

Its a world that I like.

I get your point and am not arguing with it.

The fifty lesson gambit
It is probable that after fifty lessons in the Gracie system a person could be equipped to diffuse most physical assaults. There is no logical reason to make a comparison between that hypothesis and the 8 lesson womens defense classes offered in various public school districts. Please look at the statement in the article again:

"...However, after completing a fifty-lesson course, any woman will have the elements to defend herself against any man in any situation. After that it’s a matter of continual practice with the objective of maximizing her odds of surviving an assault."

The axiomatic principle here is that the Gracie system is not a competitive system like WTF TKD, but a system designed from the ground up to defeat larger oponents in real fights.

Slow motion
Jim: "Some people have the ability to see things in slow motion when they're under pressure; others freeze. It would be better to train to acquire slow-mo ability than to train all the techniques in the world.

Learning the basic techniques and practicing them 10,000 times, then testing them in sparring, etc. creates the ability to see things in "slow motion" I would disagree that you can specifically train for it. Except in the sense that you learn from everything you do.

A good spin back kick to the attackers mid section is incredibly effective in a street situation. Done correctly by someone trained, it happens in less than 2/10 of a second. The attacker has no idea its coming, or where its coming from, and it will hit with over a 1000 lbs of force (verified scientifically by measurement)

And no, you don't have to worry about the attacker grabbing your leg!!!!!!!!! He has bigger problems to think about! If he can.

The problem that we deal with these days is that the young, who believe in fantasy and magic and other forms of bs, think that they can watch a video and do anything!

I teach high school science. I am seriously concerned about the current generation of students who literally believe that you can ignore laws of physics "if you just believe" Believe me it is a very serious problem. "If I see it on TV or in the movies, I can do it."
Practice, what practice? We don't need that s--t! And they read and do math on a 4-5th grade level.

Yes, We Can!.........uh well never mind.

4 Nerons
I agree you never want to wind up on the ground but especially in a woman vs. man fight they always seem to wind up there eventually. That's why grappling and "soft" arts are important.
I am unfamiliar with your style of martial art for the most part, one thing I do know is Israelis are some of the best trained troops out there along with the US special forces, SAS and the Vatican guards. I will be looking deeper into it, sounds interesting.

Have a great day
Edna

MMA
Notice that MMA matches nearly always are won by wrestlers and JJ practitioners.  Boxers and brawlers - (like Bimbo Slice) - get the crap knocked out of them by people who can use their legs and feet.  No ground game and leg strikes means stand-up brawlers can be broken.  But those are contests, not life.  They're closer to the real thing than the Fancy Wardrobe Schools of martial arts, where appearing in a clean gi makes you special.  Like wearing the best, most expensive running shoes, but still being last in your age group.Real life fear and terror are different than cage matches (though I'd be terrified if I had to fight one of those guys in MMA in my weight class.)

Some people have the ability to see things in slow motion when they're under pressure; others freeze. It would be better to train to acquire slow-mo ability than to train all the techniques in the world.

Basic movements and strikes, using major motor skills - (not the spinning back kick or the leaping kick with a "hiyaaaa!) - are more suitable for self-defense.   A spinning back kick might be good against someone looking the other way, and a head kick might be good against someone who isn't expecting it, but...nothing beats a driving kick to the knee or a downward strike to the clavicle.Disable and run.

By the way, a 45 caliber handgun is a nice close-range weapon, and some of them aren't too bad on the recoil.

Krav Maga, DeBecker, Gracie all good
Your readers are well educated and informed. I am a Krav Maga Instructor and can tell you that all Martial Arts are great to learn, but then you need to learn how to take those combatives (punches, kicks, etc.) and apply them in real life situations. That is where Krav Maga is focused on. It is a proven system (Israeli IDF uses it) that is scientifically based on using the natural defenses and employing speed with the element of suprise to defeat your attacker(s). Learning to survive a violent confrontation is not just about kicks and punches. It is controlling adrenal stress and fighting through your fatigue to survive.
Gracie's lessons on how to avoid a violent confrontation are excellent and all kids should be taught this so that it is an ingrained as dialing 911. Gavin Debecker's study of our society and listening to our inner voice are invaluable.
However, where I part with the systems that fight on the ground is that we never want to be there to begin with. Our choices become much more limited and being on the ground against multiple attackers reduces your odds even more.
Finally, I tell people that 6 to 8 months of training, 3x's per week will equip them with the life skills you need to help survive a violent confrontation.
Thanks for a great read by you and your readers.

tkdblk
You seem to have been blessed with a great school and sensei. I have as much contempt for black belt factories and the false sense of security they feed their students as you.

I too have had wonderful instruction.

My adult sons and I have competed on an international level but only as a way to enhance our training not for the purpose of competing. We did pretty good but whenever there was something that led to a loss we asked the victor to show us the move or kata to learn from it.(Excellent way to learn new techniques BTW)

Train for life, embrace death, and love every minute in between!

You have a wonderful Christmas and a great day as well!

Martial Arts
When my son was in 3rd grade, he was picked on by bullies. We put him in a Karate class, and a few months later, the bullies left him alone. We later put our daughter in gymnastics class. When she was older she said that she'd have preferred the Karate class.

Folks, have you been paying attention?
Far too many responses have focused on using or carrying a firearm, which was not the point of Mr.Giles article. If you will recall, Mr.Giles advocated teaching girls/young women some form of martial arts for self protection. While firearms are the gold standard in terms of self-defense, carrying a concealed weapon is simply not practical (you cannot carry them legally everywhere) for most women and would be illegal for teenagers. Accordingly, knowing some form of martial art is the most practical and accesible form of self defense for girls/women of all ages, which is what Mr. Giles was advocating all along.

Edna Eagle
You are so right about the Olympic influence, the contracts, too quickly through the system.

We don't have contracts, and only charge $50 per month for at least 12 classes. It took me 4 years to get my 1st degree black belt, and will be 15 years for Masters rank. We never like to advance anyone too quickly, and we hold to that. The thing is: by holding to that principle, we have more people wanting to train with us than we can handle with 9 instructors. Other local schools that we call "black belt factories" never have more students than we do. When we get them going, they tend to stick with us. Plain white uniforms, we don't do it for show like some. That flashy movie junk does not last.

We really have to work hard to achieve the right balance. We have a lot of nationally competitive people in competition, so there are times during the year that we devote more time to training them than we should, no question about it. We really have to work hard to take care of the majority who don't want to compete nationally. But they should compete locally in order to really test their skills and their emotions.

Have a great day, Edna

Two words
Krav Maga. You can't carry a gun in California, but you can be trained to defend yourself effciently. And you DO NOT have to be young to start. I'm 52 and have been doing it three years. You may also like to read:
http://www.americanartarchives.com/man_with_gun_in_face.htm

No draw
Women in high risk situations, like late hour parking lots, are best served with a concealed hammer revolver in their hand in the pocket of a light loose vest. It can be deployed instantly without need to draw, at very close quarters and will not be subject to stoppage.

tkdblk....
It's true most people don't associate tae kwon do as a style that uses grappling because it's mostly been shown as a "Foot" art "hard" style..sad but true, (partly because of the olympics). I also hold a second in TKD.as well as my 4th in Kenpo, and I love TKD.

Most TKD schools get a bad rap from the US because of the scams of contracts and too quick advancement through the belt system.

I noticed this when "shopping" for a good school for my kids when I shattered my knee so they could continue training while I was down.
This is why I strongly suggest looking for a school associated with an accountability factor involved.

Remember the GA Hiker!
She did everything right -- including the dog and the martial arts.

She's dead anyway.

A gun could have saved her.

Reality, cont.
...

Additionally, martial arts training focuses on competition. You practice all your life to NOT hurt someone and your automatic reflex is going to be to use competition moves in a fight and to stop short of hurting someone.

Shooting, however, is a fine motor skill. It doesn't require athletic speed and power. It doesn't even require as much hand-eye coordination as a video game. Its all about mental focus and familiarity with a simple tool. Get your daughter a gun and take her to IPSC or other action shooting matches.

As for that gun, ...

Little .380s are cute and they're certainly valuable as deep concealment guns for people who are very tiny or who cannot conceal anything larger in the clothes their job requires. And their nearly non-existent recoil is great for the extremely sensitive, the arthritic, or the otherwise disabled, but they're both on the low end of effective in the elusive and semi-mythological "stopping power" AND more expensive to shoot than 9mm or .38special.

As a general rule, most men do a lousy job of choosing firearms for women. Men, hand over the cash and get out of the way. Ladies, go to http://www.corneredcat.com and to the forums at http://www.womenandguns.com for assistance in choosing the right gun and carry arrangement to suit YOU rather than adopting the first piece of one-size-doesn't-fit-anywhere-near-everyone advice you heard.

My daughter may end up taller than I am. Two wasted years of dance class money prove that she's no better coordinated. But you absolutely do NOT want to be on the barrel end of a gun she's shooting.

A Little Reality, Please,
Granted, martial arts is good for many things and a well-trained martial artist has some degree of advantage against an untrained person until a certain level of size/armament disparity exists. And the confidence thing is unquestionable. Its a great activity for any kid, girl or boy, who has the talent and desire.

Very few good men, Rev. Giles among them it seems, have any real appreciation of just how vulnerable women are. Even at the same height and weight the average man is innately stronger and has a higher proportion of the fast-reacting muscles as well as better hand-eye coordination and 3-D spatial abilities than the average woman. There is no getting around biology.

But, when a predator is after you if you're close enough for martial arts you're TOO CLOSE. You're not only at risk of being overpowered by sheer muscle and mass, but of picking up AIDS, Hep B, or whatever other vile diseases he may be carrying in the blood that you're GOING to be exposed to in a real fight.

Look, some people are naturally slow and clumsy. I am personally utterly without any form of athletic gift. The year I took judo I was fit and strong -- stronger than the other girls as proven in the weight room. But the 6 inch height advantage everyone had on me meant that I could only perform throws against completely unresisting opponents and once the height difference got to 8-12" it was physically impossible for me to perform many of the moves even on someone who was actively cooperating.

In competition against others of my weight class and level of training -- optimum conditions -- I never achieved a single win. I was never thrown, choked, or forced to surrender in an arm bar however. I was simply too slow to ever get a grip on my opponent and so lost on technical points every time.

Giles behind the times
Doug you're behind the times but it's good advice anyway. My three sons and daughter are all involved in martial arts. Three brown belts and a black belt. The only thing I would pay for is Krav or MMA, the oldest does both. I wanted the kids to learn truly worthwhile techniques. Additionally, my children can handle all manner of firearms, have hunter safety certificates, firearms safety training, and can handle a variety of primitive weapons.

However, all that said, the brain is the most important part of self-defense. The kids are taught situational awareness, warrior attitude, physical and emotional control, threat assessment, and a variety of other things. Balance is achieved by training the mind and the body, we never allow them neglect academics either. I have two in universities now and two pending.

Good advice from most everyone posting today. "oldsocialworker" I like your idea!

DON'T TREAD ON ME, OR MY KIDS!

You talk to much, your point would easily have been made with a good deal less chatter. Why is it writers seem to think longer is better?

will be more clear
If I am 2-5 feet from the opponent and need a very quick reaction, I will use my Tae Kwon Do skills. If I am less than 1 foot away, and need quick reaction, I will use Hapkido skills (Korean grappling and joint locking style)

If I have the time and distance available to me, will get out the Glock 21.

And you need to train a lot to have the judgement in order to pick the right set of tactics. And keep training for life.

Chuck Norris has w wonderful program in Texas that does both of what you suggest.
It replaces gym class with martial arts and it's through the schools.
It's been going on for 20 years or so I believe.
Check out Chuck's website for info.
He's a wonderful person having met him on more than a few occasions.
His program should be an example of success for the whole of the school systems nationwide. I believe it's graduated over 2000 blackbelts

Glock 21
True to a point that you can just use your gun.

Just because I am a 3rd degree Black Belt in Tae Kwan Do, don't make the assumption that we do not also train in grappling styles too. Oddly, 99% of people make that assumption. I'm not sure what that says about them.........

My son-in-law is a policeman, and returned from 15 months in Afghanistan last year with the National Guard. He is an MP.

Two points about that: They do have Glock 21's as their police sidearm. My senior TKD instructor is the self-defense trainer for the police dept. and I get to see what they do when they train self-defense. His strong opinion is that they lack the ability to handle themselves in close quarters, so cannot make use of the guns like they need.. So, many of them train with us in order to be able to use their guns effectively. I can confirm what my senior instructor says about their hand to hand combat ability.

And their conditioning is not good. They are not fat at all, don't get me wrong there. The weight lifter types have terrible endurance, which is much more important than people think, especially in a ground fighting situation. (The same is true of the high school football players in the high school where I teach. They burn time in the weight room getting big. But that is all it is)

2nd: I read some statistics lately that shows that Iraq and Afghanistan combat injury situations show that our soldiers are much more likely these days to be involved in a hand to hand combat situation than ever. Their response is to start to teach the use of the M-16 as a martial arts striking tool. Good for them.

Good morning. You sound discouraged. Sometimes it helps to get back to basics. Feet warm? Tummy full. Someone to love? Thinking of these works for me when optical rectitis sets in. When my optical rectitis kicks in my brain confuses the inputs from my optics nerves and my major sphincter and it gives me a s****y outlook on life.

BEST SOLUTION TO THE CRIME PROBLEM
We here in Texas have a concealed carry law now and there is a movement afloat to get the right to also carry sidearms in full view. One or more western states already have that right and have had for many years. There is a town in Georgia that requires all qualified residents to own and carry a gun when outdoors. Their crime rate is extremely low (especially in comparison to the high crime rate of a northern town that outlawed citizen gun ownership years ago). I believe the Georgia town has found the best solution to the crime problem. They should be just about out of criminals by now, and what a wonderful blessing that is bound to be.

Gym class should be replaced
by martial arts training. In public school gyn classes, chunky girls and non-athletic boys stand and watch as the jock guys and "it" girls flirt and pretend to be playing pickle ball, floor hockey, soccer with 30 people on th field, etc... Then the kids who "don't participate" (who wants to be called a fat cow or a stupid faggot when they try?) Its all useless crap, and martial arts would be an excellent option for training.

Since it actually empowers people in a meaningful way, it will never happen.

As a black belt and a mom I teach:
All fights wind up on the ground...
This isn't just male vs. female it's any fight where 2 people are using their bodies.

I trained for the last 30 years and know you can NEVER stop training. This is a good article but one thing it left out is when looking for a martial arts school in no matter what style you chose make sure that

1. It has someone to answer to like the AKKA or something just so you are assured it's not a backyard blackbelt trying to earn extra cash without the acredibility.

2.They teach grappling and some form of ju-jitsu or "soft art" (like I said all fights wind up on the ground)and utilize more than just the instructors as "targets"

3. Teach awareness and body concepts EARLY..never talk to strangers, no one touches you where your bathing suit goes, travel with friends etc...

and

Never, ever believe for one minute that there isn't someone who will not get off on the fight and they will kill you. there are some really sick puppies out there... and brains before brawn can and will save your butt.

ALWAYS carry a gun if traveling and devolop a warrior mentality...

I'm a 4th degree Black Belt and CCW holder and yes martial arts are good but a 9MM is better. My kids are black belts or training to be but they ALL can handle all the guns I have as well.

Lots of good advice
here on the nitty-gritty. Self-confident attitude, training, awareness, and a .380/9mm are mutually supportive. The mere fact that one has a firearm within reach projects a confidence that potential attackers recognize and avoid. Just like wolves, they see the difference between a victim and a staunch adversary. Forewarned is forearmed.

Good suggestions. Let's not forget the huge problem many Americans have in packing heat. I think Texans may be lucky that their state has favorable gun laws. Many states still have the onerous Democratically sponsored gun control laws that prevent citizens from defending themselves.

A combination of martial arts training and your fanny bag solution is probably the best defense combination. The SWAT Team members I have met in SoCal all sport fanny bags when off duty.

Having said that, it's got to be a traumatic experience to be apprehended by your own government for defending yourself with a firearm.

So, I would take your suggestions seriously and add 'join the NRA' and remain politically active in supporting concealed carry permits in your state.

An armed community is a polite community. An armed citizen lives another day.

SURVIVAL IN 21st CENTURY AMERICA
In any physical confrontation, the primary object is survival...nothing more, nothing less. Therefore, training oneself to be always aware and suspicious of what is going on near and far is vitally important.

Second, I consider it highly intelligent to learn to sprint with great speed. Running away gets you out of the zone of danger quickly. I am a 74 yr. old man who sprints the 100 at excellent speed. I believe anyone can do the very same thing if they will get in good physical condition and practice the difficult technique involved in running super fast. Not to be ignored is the fact that sprinting is excellent exercise and should add approximately twenty healthy years to your lifespan when combined with a genuinely healthy diet and intelligent weight work.

Beyond that, one should purchase a black "fanny pack"--actually worn in front. Strap a good size fanny pack on and your potential attackers have to consider the real possibility that you are packing heat in there. You would not believe how nice everyone is to you when they think you are wearing a gun holster disguised as a fanny pack.

Last, buy a high quality .380 automatic for the fanny pack, get a good book on gunnery, get qualified instruction, learn to fire your weapon accurately with and without traditional aiming technique and wear it every day. Make sure those additional 20 healthy years you will get from sprinting are not cut short by a bad guy with a gun or big knife.

God will help you in all of this if you ask him.

How do you defeat a blackbelt?
Q: How do you defeat a blackbelt?
A: Glock 21.

50 lessons?
I agree with the comments about 50 lessons not being enough, but the issue is not the number of lessons.

In the military, they talk about "time in grade." Their idea is that it takes a certain amount of time for the mind and the emotions to actually absorb AND be able to instinctively practice what you have learned. And you actually have to practice it in competition to see if you actually will react the way you think you will. And there must be physical contact. Can't believe some practice with out it.

I cringe when I see people selling an "8 hour womens self-defense course" They learn just enough to be over-confident while spending a lot of money.

I am a 3rd degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do, 12 years in training, certified instructor. Still learning every day. When I stop learning I should quit.

No question that at 6 months of training, I could move better and had more confidence, which really often does get you out of 90% of the situations without the opponent ever even knowing that you have some training. Most of them sense the knowledge that you have and instinctively choose not to mess with you without knowing why.

It is not something that you train for in a short time, then think you know something. It is a life time life style, one which I wish I had started at 8 years old. My life would have been so much better, yet no one would have known why, or needed to know why.

Hope your daughters keep training for life, in a few years they will REALLY understand. But they have to make the journey in the right amount of time. Books are worthless, get a good instructor.

Often overlooked/ I hear you, Joey
The books Protecting the Gift and The Gift of Fear by Gavin De Becker are very useful in the teach your daughter to trust her instincts department. I think this aspect of female psychology gets overlooked or underestimated far too much by male instructors and many dads. At 5'2" and 110#s myself my first preference is for my girls, who are built like me, to avoid any sort of situation that might lead to a physical confrontation and way too many sad stories begin with, "I had that funny feeling...if only I had listened to it."

Part of Total Survival Education
Martial arts training is good for physical fitness and certainly can provide people who would not normally do so a venue to "fight" against an opponent. The problem usually starts when the martial artist tries exotic moves or fails to administer the kind of incapacitating blow that finishes a street fight. Overcoming the sense of revulsion to killing or seriously disabling the opponent is the disadvantage that a normal person has in a fight with a criminal.

If trouble is expected, a striking weapon that acts as force magnifier was always my first choice. I particularly liked a slap jack since its blow can numb an assailant's extremity when applied to a pressure point. It can also knock an opponent senseless and allow you to leave a scene without being covered in blood from a knife fight. The police may arrest the intended victim, if a potential assailant is excessively damaged.

Unarmed combat, marksmanship, fieldcraft and other survival techniques are handy if the veneer of society shatters due to unrest, disaster or economic failure. Teaching these arts to children is a way to ensure their survival in uncertain times.

Reality check
“However, after completing a fifty-lesson course, any woman will have the elements to defend herself against any man in any situation.” Bull. This is simply an asinine claim. In spite of what this instructor says and what is politically correct thinking, an unarmed 130 pound woman is simply not going to be prepared for an enraged 200 pound male attacker after spending approximately 50 hours of training in, what is most likely, sport Jiu-Jitsu. Certainly skill and technique are extremely important and great grapplers can do some amazing things against larger opponents. But size and strength are still incredibly important. There is a reason for weight categories in martial arts competitions. To be truly prepared for a violent attacker, especially one who is armed, requires dedication to a way of life. It requires experiencing a certain amount of pain that most people are not willing to experience. Most so called martial artists have a false sense of security. They have no idea what it’s like to be in a real fight. I’m 6’3, 230 pounds, have studied martial arts for almost 20 years, and never leave my home without both a gun and a knife. I do this because from my training and study I know that I have limitations and am not prepared for all circumstances. I know that pain is not a factor for some attackers due to drugs or mental issues. I’m glad your daughter is training but don’t allow her to underestimate the disadvantages women have when facing male attackers. Make sure she understands the difference between the ring and the street and, when legal and reasonable, have her arm herself appropriately.

I always enjoy
reading stories of dirtbags attempting to mug or rape blackbelts, and getting their worthless butts kicked.

your right
My neice is 15 and a black belt,i taaught my daughter how to box,and how to really hurt a guy if he gets out of line,She had to do it once . i also taught her how be aware and the best defense is to not put yourself in a place or position where you have to defend yourself .
