Obama's Ill-Thought-Out Healthcare Plan

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WASHINGTON -- President Obama repeatedly states two things about his national healthcare initiative that are not true: First, that we cannot have truly long-term economic growth until we replace the present healthcare system with an entirely new government-imposed one. Second, that the plan will end the explosion in healthcare costs.

In fact, there have been periods in our county's economic history when we've experienced relatively long-term growth with the healthcare system we have now. The most recent being the nearly 25 years of growth that followed the 1981-1982 recession (with a shallow slide in the early 1990s) when the Dow Jones rose to 14,000, unemployment fell to about 4 percent, U.S. exports were booming, and new business formation soared.

Indeed, during this time, the healthcare industry was one of the biggest and most dependable sources of job creation, even when jobs became increasingly hard to find elsewhere in the economy.

As to the reduction of spiraling healthcare costs, just the opposite is likely to result as healthcare demands skyrocket, fueled by trillions of dollars in government subsidies that will be poured into the system, overburdening an industry struggling to keep up with the demands we place on it now.

Despite claims that his healthcare plan will spur economic growth for years to come, Obama is pushing so-called healthcare reforms that will weaken our economy.

The House and Senate bills making their way through the legislative system will impose draconian tax rates on investors and small-business owners who will be forced to provide health-insurance benefits that will drive many of them out of business. Moreover, it will force the nation's private insurers to unfairly compete with a federally subsidized public health-insurance system that will impose expensive new health mandates on them. That will, in turn, drive up their costs and their prices -- forcing many out of the marketplace.

If it is true that timing in politics is everything, Obama and the Democrats couldn't have picked the worst time to enact their sweeping nationalization of our healthcare system -- during one of the worst recessions since the Great Depression.

The administration says the higher taxes, penalties, regulations and the other government mandates on individuals and businesses will not take effect until 2011 when they expect the recession to be over.

But government economists said last week that the economy could still be quite weak at that time and may not achieve full recovery for another five years. And this forecast doesn't take into consideration all of the cost burdens that national health care will throw at it.

While the forecasts by a panel of 17 top Federal Reserve leaders said it expects the economy may grow modestly (between 2 percent and 3 percent), they suggested that we could be facing a jobless recovery that would keep unemployment high throughout 2011 and beyond when companies will resist hiring many new workers.

Even so, if Obama gets his way, Democrats will pass a nationalized health program this summer that will sock the economy with one of the biggest entitlement programs and tax increases in American history, and will cost taxpayers and businesses more than $1.5 trillion over 10 years and trillions more after that.

This, despite the fact that the Fed forecasts unemployment will likely rise to 10.5 percent before this year ends and hit 10.6 in 2010 -- years when business advocates say this will be no time to burden our economy with higher taxes and costly healthcare mandates.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which represents thousands of U.S. employers, sent a stinging letter to Congress last week, saying it opposed the Democrats' healthcare reforms. Its chief complaint: the taxes it will slap on small businesses.

The Democrats' bill "fails to pass our simple litmus test: This legislation will not address the nation's health cost explosion, will steeply hike taxes in an already precarious economic situation, will fail to lead to more affordable, accessible, quality health coverage, and will lead us toward government-run health care. In short, it will make a bad situation worse, at great costs to the nation in jobs, taxes and freedom," the Chamber said.

The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), the nation's largest small-business association, said the bill would strike at the heart of the business sector that creates most of the jobs in this country.

"NFIB opposes the (Democrats' bill) because it threatens the viability of our nation's job creators, fails to increase access and choice to all small businesses, destroys choice and competition for private insurance, and fails to address the core challenge facing small businesses -- cost."

The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) weighed in, too, against the House bill's onerous surtax that would push the top federal income tax rate to nearly 50 percent and well over that when state and local taxes are factored in.

"Nearly 70 percent of manufacturers pay taxes at the individual rate. Many of these businesses fall into the higher tax bracket, even though most of their taxed income -- an average of $570,000 for small and medium-sized manufacturers -- is being reinvested into the business," the NAM letter said.

All of this raises yet another promise by Obama that doesn't ring true: that no one making less than $250,000 a year will see their taxes go up. In fact, the costs of these taxes, mandates and penalties, either directly or indirectly, will be born -- as they always are -- by every American worker and their families.

Total Control
Obama has visions of Grandeur. He knows if he can control the healthcare of the country...he controls the country.

He is trying to ram it through before the country learns just how dangerous it will be. He sees every day public opinion is turning against it,so he must hurry.

That is the leftists' M.O..Bills that must be voted on but no time to read them. He knows they have a filibuster-proof majority,so what does it matter if it is read or not? It will pass.

Maybe the Healthcare Bill will be different. Several Blue Dogs are working against it. Let us hope they will stand strong against it.

Ramming it through
He's trying to ram it through because if it doesn't happen now, it won't. The problem is that all of our politicians, Repubs included, are CONSTANTLY running for office.

The fear most conservatives have over this reform is the insurance company and pharmaceutical company money they will no longer receive if they vote for it.

And, by the way...it has been a problem for well over 40 years! I hardly call this ramming it through! It's time - period. Repubs want to "think" about it some more. They have never thought about it, other than how to keep the status quo so their buddies can continue to screw people for their hard-earned cash.

It's time. Unless you feel good about having a health care system that rivals - no one!! This system sucks, period. And - it's time to change.

Ramming It Through
He is ramming it through because the more people learn about the cost of a plan, the rationing of care when there are not enough doctors or money to take care of patients, the less it looks workable.

I have had insurance all my adult life. If I was employed, my employer and I paid my premiums. If I was not employed,I paid for it myself. I have never been denied treatment and could change a policy at will.

This is a control grab and nothing more. When you must rely on the government to save you...you are a slave to the government. When there is not enough money to keep you insured, you will be forced to pay more and more. You will have no choice.

Obama has said you may keep your private insurance if you want to. That is a lie. He is saying anything to get it passed. It won't be the first lie he's told and surely won't be the last! This lie is unforgiveable.

It gets worse
The House bill makes seeking private insurance coverage illegal.

The first lie
The first thing that Obama states about the disastrous health care plan that is being proposed is that it is "his." Obama could not create a plan for a doll's tea party, let alone a health care plan, or an economic plan, or any other plan. He is an intellectual lightweight who reads speeches that other people write.
He also has an ego the size of Montana. When discussing proposed plans or policies, previous presidents would talk about what "we" plan to do. With Obama it is always what"I" plan to do, and "my" plan for this and that.
The situation is bad, and getting worse every day.

"Ill thought out"?
Donald you are way too kind.
This is a power grab, it was when the clintons tried it and it is today.

As a vet, I warn my retired amigos that I believe the first thing he'll grab is the retirees TRI-Care program. We worked hard over the yearts to finally get something of value and he'll take it because he can.

We vets were woefully underpaid for years and one of the gov'ts promises was health care...since this commie doesn't seem to care too much for the military given his brilliant idea of making wounded vets pay for their own care, I see that coming like a train.

Mind your own business barry.

MEDICARE RECIPIENTS CAN STOP OBAMA'S HEALTH CARE PLAN

Obama's Health Care Plan can be stopped if we can get the Medicare recipients to join us in opposing it.

Get the information out that Obama plans to cut Medicare funding by 400 Billion Dollars to subsidize his Health Care Plan.

Medicare recipients will be faced with rationing and will move from the front of the line to the back.

That 400 Billion Dollars will be used to add over 10 Million Illegal Aliens to the health care rolls.

Most of the Medicare recipients are unaware of this.

AARP is backstabbing those they're suppose to protect by not informing their members of the 400 Billion Dollar Medicare cut.

In fact the liberal AARP is backing Obama's plan to the detriment of their members.

It is said that Social Security is the 3rd Rail of American Politics.

Medicare recipients comprise the vast majority of that Social Security 3rd Rail group.

United they are a formidable opponent.

Use your position to alert them of these Medicare cuts & that 3rd rail contingent will stop the Obama Health Care Plan.

Why?
If you read enough of these articles and following comments you see where Obama’s plans are hard to justify. Actually they are hard to rationalize. That is why I always ask myself, why are they doing this, what is their motive?

Not all of Obama’s advisors are incompetent. Surely someone is asking why do we want to do this? I understand why he wants to do it all now. If he lets an honest debate take place he loses. We all instinctively know if someone is pushing us too hard to do something important, we should be suspicious.

When you take all of Obama’s actions into account, a nasty picture starts to form. I believe he sees himself leading the entire world after his US presidency is over. I guess he needs to dismantle the strengths and fabric of America first.

Usually when someone displays enormous ego, they are just the opposite. They have a low self esteem. If you think about his background you can certainly see how this could happen.

I missed it. Who wrote the column?

un balanced
You have been out in the sun too long!

The additional taxes that will be forced on small businesses with this moronic plan, which includes billions in dumbocrud pork, will cost thousands more jobs as these small businesses, many that are already struggling, will simply close.

MN is a state that is heavily invested in the medical industry and literally thousands of jobs will be lost, including in your state! As an example, the Mayo Clinic facility there is already losing money and they will simply pull out of AZ. Blue Cross/Blue Shield of MN just laid off 300 people.

For Christ's sake the Congressional budget office even says it's not sustainable!

Why don't you think for yourself for once and get educated on the mechanics of the plan as your liberat friends proposed it before you spout your stupid statements!

Moron
"It's time. Unless you feel good about having a health care system that rivals - no one!! This system sucks, period. And - it's time to change."

I can see why you would think that. The world's richest people all come to America for health care. Clearly they simply want to get the worst care available.

If they truly wanted amazing health care they would go to Canada or Europe and get in line. They might get lucky and get scheduled in before they die...

Double-entendre
if the word "out" is removed from the title, since all QOTUS Big-Horing-Zero's thoughts towards the US (of which he is incumbent head) are ill!

I Cannot Understand Why
We have had Democrats in Congress all of my life and beyond. While they have always been more liberal in thinking and actions, never before have I ever felt threatened by their actions as I am now. Yes, we've always had some left wing radicals, but this time around, the inmates have truly taken over the asylum.
Why is it that usually somewhat level-headed (moderate) Democrats who were never interested in destroying the USA are now blindly following the Obama/Pelosi leadership towards that end?

eastlake joe
I found it. Very good. He will likely have a few drinks to celebrate ,as he is always championing higher taxes (for everyone else). The old dog!!

2 questions:
1)Will the Obama administration address tort reform?

Surely with the influx of new patients, time will be limited. Obama et al are demanding quality and accountability on the part of providers. How are we going to keep costs down when every test has to be ordered? Will the government dictate when tests and procedures can or cannot be ordered? How are pharmcists going to handle the increased rx volume (especially during a shortage)? How will nurses care for patients fully? There is already a shortage of nurses. There is a shortage now of primary-care physicians.

With that in mind, the risks of malpractice for all healthcare people will increase enormously. Lawsuits will abound. Patients will be suing for damages. Healthcare people will be paying tons of money to defend themselves.

Who will benefit for all of this? The trial lawyers. They will make money hand over fist.

Never mind the patients.

2) Obama says he wants government health insurance to compete with private.

What about government schools competing with private school?

Or is that "different"?

Who benefits from the lack of school choice? The teachers' unions. They have a vested interest in keeping education government-run.

Never mind the children.

Pelosi
She was just on the TV stating that they had the nurses suport and now the doctors support for their healthcare plan. She ended her statement by say and "we certainly have the support of the American people" Is she on drugs? Does she live on the same panet? Or is she a bold face liar.

That's o.k. I just got him on another one. The guy is a pain in the lower extremeties!!!

Change you Count On ????????????
What happened to the 95% of working Americans are going to see a tax cut?

Well, let me see, just how many Spending Bills ago was that anyway?

If they pass Cap and Trade and they will, your cost of electricity will sky-rocket each quarter. Your gas at the pump will go up just as fast and if that is not the worse transportation cost across the board will follow at the same rate. What that means is a greater cost to market goods, “For you morons who voted BO” that means Wal-Mart, Target, K-Mart, Food Mart and any other Mart will raise their prices because it cost them more, so food goes up as well as clothes.

Now when the wonderful world of Liberal health care starts, and you can no longer get an appointment to see your chosen professional but semi-annually, then a tax will impact your pay check for those who work and have a plan, or worse they will forgo it for Obama-Nation Health. That means you will have to pay all the cost yourself at their discounted rate. As it stands now, 25% more than the average yearly cost for anyone who works.

He is most obnoxious!! A paid agitator for the socialists George Soros/Arianna Huffington,so he can be expected to tout their communist mantra.

Keep him on his toes...or at least on his bar stool.

Health Care
Even if you are able to stay with your own insurance plan as Obama has promised your insurance rates are going to go up substantially. I hate to be against it but its a real world. Congress won't go against the insurance companies and will require them to cover pre-existing conditions. This is very costly to the insurance companies and they simply have to pass the cost on. Its like selling insurance to someone whose house is on fire or whose car has already been wrecked. When someone with a serious pre-existing condition comes into your group that requires continuing care your rates will go up.

The only real solution for this is to put these people into a national pool to spread the cost over all taxpayers rather than small groups. But Congress isn't smart enough to see this.
They are just telling the insurance companies they have to insure pre-existing conditions. Sounds good but its really not. By the way both my wife and I have serious pre-existing conditions that would exclude us from getting insurance.

Let the Feds Clean up their act
The Feds should revise theior own policies to correct unintended consequences. Stop $125B/yr of fraud in Medicare and Medicaid they brag of efficiency. Tighten up ER law so it only applies to real emergencies, not illegal's sore throats. Quit creating shortages of docs and nurses so we have to impport them. Improve the VA so disgrunteled vetsa don't call cspan every day. Reduce cost of FDA risk aveseion to lower drug cost and improve availably of orphan drugsd etc.
By the way, Obama's bill will be in court forever. Why should states give up jurisdiction over health insurance and why should any of us allow the violation of medical record surveillance?
