A blessed land, an optimistic future

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WASHINGTON -- As gloomy as our economy seems now, we still have plenty of reasons in this season of hope and goodwill to be grateful and even optimistic about the future.

We live in a blessed land where we are free to voice our grievances about policies and people that displease us and exert the ultimate power over governments by replacing unpopular administrations, lawmakers and all those who govern beneath them by simply checking a box on a paper ballot or a computer screen.

We live in a country where people of all walks of life are free to climb the ladder of opportunity and pursue their dreams, even against daunting challenges and heavy odds. Despite all the problems that confront us from time to time, depressions or recessions, we have always overcome them and made this a better and freer place to live and prosper.

To be sure, over the past year, America's spirit of optimism has dimmed somewhat as our economy has descended into a recession that has hurt a lot of people and their communities. Our confidence has waned in the process, and there are those who say our country will never be the same -- that we are consigned to slower growth, fewer opportunities for the next generation and maybe a more dysfunctional society.

I don't believe that for a moment, and I'm happy to see that President-elect Barack Obama -- even as he characterizes the enormous economic and social problems that lie before us -- expresses his optimism that things will get better, the economy will turn around, and lives will be improved.

Early in his primary campaign, Obama said he admired Ronald Reagan for lifting the hopes of a dispirited and pessimistic nation at a dark time in our country's history. Some in his party criticized him for believing there was anything good to say about Reagan. But since his election, he has sounded a bit like him, expressing a sunny optimism that has boosted the nation's confidence in his forthcoming presidency -- as several polls now show.

Whether Obama's big-spending public-works proposals will turn the economy around remains to be seen, but make no mistake, one way or another, it will eventually recover. All recessions end, and this one will, too.

But Obama may have been playing the expectations game when he said that things will get worse before they get better. "It will take longer than any of us will like; years, not months, but it will get better if we are willing to act boldly and swiftly."

Things will no doubt get worse in the short-term, but there are glimmers of hope here and there that the economy may in fact be on the precipice of turning around sooner than later.

This recession had its roots in the subprime-housing bubble that burst, bringing down a major sector of our economy and the financial markets with it. But several changes have occurred on that front that bode well for the future of the housing industry.

Mortgage rates have fallen to a little more than 5 percent on average in the past couple of weeks, and it's likely they will fall further in response to the Federal Reserve's latest interest-rate cuts and other initiatives it is taking to bring down fixed 30-year rates to about 4.5 percent.

Combine this with falling prices for new and existing homes, and you have the makings of a sharp upswing in home buying and a recovery in the real-estate markets. There's already been a sharp rise in mortgage applications and in refinancing as a result lower rates. I expect them to fall even further in the weeks to come.

Add to this a slow but gradual opening in the lending markets for creditworthy applicants. Despite the perception that Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson's injection of nearly $350 billion into the financial markets has not effectively unclogged the nation's credit arteries, there is growing evidence in the banking sector that loans have begun flowing again to borrowers.

So much of our recovery depends on global economies, and here, too, there is a lot going on. Central banks from Europe to Asia, have been pumping trillions of dollars into their financial institutions in a coordinated and unprecedented attempt to jump-start recessionary economies on a worldwide scale. In other words, governments both here and abroad are injecting plenty of liquidity into the world's vast, interconnected economic bloodstream that will be a huge factor in the global economy's recovery and our own.

Obama's prediction of "years, not months" not withstanding, the history of recent recessions shows they do not last long. The 1974-1975 recession lasted 16 months; in 1980, it lasted six months; the 1981-1982 downturn ran for 16 months; the 1990-1991 decline ended in eight months, as did the 2001 recession.

So don't believe the gloom-and-doomers who are always selling our country short and who are always wrong over the long run. We've got a bumpy road ahead of us in the next few months, but we're going to pull out of this downturn a lot sooner than the pessimists think.

Lambro...
...with the election of Obama and his workers paradise agenda we have altered and adulterated the concepts this country are based on. Obama has little regard for what we are but, wants to change us into what we are not...and that is a country based on socialist and communal ideals. It will take years for us to recover not from this financial mess but, from the political mess that we have elected into office. OBama..NOT my President..NOT now...NOT ever!!!!

BLESSED LAND?
HAR HAR DON'T MAKE ME LAUGH!
IT MAY HAVE HAD GOD'S BLESSING AT ONE TIME,BUT I VENTURE TO SAY,THAT WAS!

WHEN A NATION WHO CLAIMS TO BE 80% CHRISTIAN ALLOWS THE MURDER OF 4,000 BABIES A DAY IN THE ABORTION MILLS ACCROSS THE COUNTRY;YOU MAY AS WELL HANG UP YOUR JOCK!THIS NATION HAS BECOME SO VILE WITH THE FILTH IN TV,MOVIES AND ON THE INTERNET;

I BELIEVE THIS NATION IS HEADED FOR THE WRATH OF GOD!THEN AGAIN,ITS HAPPENING ALREADY BUT THE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN BLINDED THROUGH THEIR OWN LUST AND WE ARE HEADED FOR DISASTER.

BHO Has 12-15 Mos for Econ Fix
Notwithstanding the pre-inaugural expectations control communications BHO is engaging in, he has 12-15 months to produce a SIGNIFICANT improvement in the economy, an absolute de mimimis test for the Messiah he portrayed himself to be in the campaign. The American people will have little patience for his ideological-driven "reforms" when the economy continues to limp along and as a result the voters will reduce Dem numbers in Congress in 2010.

The only way the economy can be reinvigorated is through supply side economics in tax and regulation policy, which he and his leftist FDR wannabe cronies will never embrace.

i remain optimistic the country will recover in time.

But my faith is in the working folks of this country.

Unlike the parasitic wealthy of europe and the useless political class of this country, enough of us are still willing to work to take care of ourt responsibilities.

The problem is that the dims and their new messiah, b hussein want to tax your earnings to reward the losers that keep voting the dims back into office

The b hussein has made too many promises and the m,edia has such high expectations he is guaranteed to fail.

But it won't be the right who he will disappoint we already have low expectations for him improving the situation the dims have worked decades to make worse.

But when the messiah can't deliver on his promises to the losers who live on the dim's plantation of entitlement, they will be the ones who will turn on him.

After all failing to deliver for the losers after promising to give out more goodies won';t set well with those who feel entitled to have but fail to understand you work for what you have

In all reality
We have probably seen the last true open elections in this country. With Obama geared to implement his "homeland defense force", change the "basic way Washington governs", implement "economic justice", and "reform the ideas America holds dear", the Constitution is all but dead. He ha said as much in many interviews, search Yahoo for Obama and you will see what he has in store for Amerika, the land he hates.

We have only ourselves to count on to prevent this country from being destroyed.

I am still waiting to see who the messiah will find to man his homeland defense force.

We already know libs wimp out at the sight of guns and who really believes the military or the law enforcement agencies who have taken an oath to defend the country will swear allegiance to the messiah.

This homeland defense idea sounds to much like hitler's ss or the russkies kbg.

And who will train them assuming he finds people dumb enough to join his new force.

What would happen is that everyone of these clowns might as well have a bullseye painted on their chest as all those who will defend america will stand against the messiah's private army

Dr Chaz
He has 12-15 months to fix?? Or what!" This Marxist dictator is in now and he don't give a hoot about what the American people want! Your not going to vote him or any of the Socialist pigs out. They have a hold of the government and aren't going to let go no matter what it takes! Anyone who thinks they have a say (a vote) haven't been paying attention to what's been done to them,

The only thing that might dislodge them is an armed revolution or a 3rd world war!

Washington Times
This is a very conservative paper--economically, politically and socially. (Reverend Moon was about nothing if not first things, especially family.) One thinks of Terrence Jeffrey, Tony Blankley, Ollie North, Bill Sammons, Bill Murchison and others.

I compliment Mr. Lambro for this realistic, objective piece. Our new commander-in-chief has a well-trained mind as he proved and continues to prove.

Since when did this group become named "homeland defense force??" Ovomit stated that he was going to create an "Internal Security Force." "Stronger than our military."

There is only one reason for this. The equivalent of Hitlers Brown Shirts! In this case they will be Black Shirts!

They will be used just like Hitler did. For HIS security and to enforce his rule! It has nothing to do with 'homeland defense.'

DEATH OF KEYNSEAN THEFT ECONOMY
Dr. Ron Paul has the answer to our national financial and political swamp, not O, not FDR, not John Maynard Keynes and not liberalism/socialism/communism/fascism.

Austrian economics alone will solve our financial problems and everything else will only make the situation worse in the long run. Self destructive, theft based Keynesian economic policy has been going on in Washington for all of my long life and has brought us to the bad place in which we find ourselves today.

The dishonest balloon of false hope designed to hide mega theft as propagated by miseducated economists and criminal politicians cannot last forever, and I think we may have finally reached the popping point. It will all likely play out as hyper inflation. Massive government deficit spending now going on and further planned for our future will cause our fiat currency to become virtually worthless. I think it is time to read Dr. Gary North's books to learn how to survive this type of financial destruction.

The end of Keynesian economic insanity will be tragic for vast numbers of people here in America and around the world, but we do not have to be among them. Only by facing the facts with courage, wisdom and intelligence can we protect ourselves and our families from the inevitable economic typhoon that many of us see headed our way on the horizon.
