Obama Supports Union Ploy to Drop Secret Ballots

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WASHINGTON -- When Barack Obama was seeking AFL-CIO support in the primaries, he promised to sign a bill that would effectively deprive workers of a private-ballot vote in unionization drives.

The bill, which is No. 1 on organized labor's wish list, is seen by union bosses as the only way to increase depleted membership rolls because it would be easier to unionize workplaces without the bother of the private ballot to protect workers in a free and democratic election.

Obama doesn't talk about this issue much before general audiences, but it his No. 1 promise when he speaks to unions -- pledging that the so-called Employee Free Choice Act will become law in 2009 if he wins the presidency in November. "We're ready to play offense for organized labor. It's time we had a president who didn't choke saying the word 'union.' A president who strengthens our unions by letting them do what they do best: organize our workers," the freshman senator told the AFL-CIO in Philadelphia on April 2.

"I will make it the law of the land when I'm president of the United States," he told the labor federation.

The labor-law reform is known as the "card-check bill" because it would allow employees to form a union simply by publicly collecting a majority of cards signed by workers supporting unionization of their employer's business. Union leaders would, of course, know how each worker voted, opening them up to pressure and intimidation.

Under current law, once a majority of workers submit cards requesting union certification, an election is held where workers vote by secret ballot on whether to ratify unionization. The bill, pushed by labor and supported by Obama, would effectively abandon that procedure in most cases.

John McCain opposes the bill, saying it would deny a democratic right of workers to decide by secret ballot whether they and their co-workers will come under union representation.

The Arizona Republican thinks the card-check bill is nothing more than "a poorly disguised attempt by the labor unions to swell their ranks at the expense of workers' rights and employers."

While both candidates battle for support over critical issues such as the economy and Iraq, the AFL-CIO has made card check its chief obsession. They announced late last month that they were launching "a ramped-up campaign" to make Obama's pledge a reality, beginning with a massive mailing to more than 600,000 union households in the battleground states of Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

That will be followed by a "massive campaign" among 13 million union voters in August to promote Obama and highlight his support for the bill. Unions will spend $300 million in the elections -- much of it to promote the card-check bill.

To be sure, business is not sitting idly by while union lobbyists attempt to muscle this bill through Congress. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is launching the Workforce Freedom Initiative against Big Labor's efforts "to take away the protection of a private ballot, giving union organizers free rein to publicly pressure workers into signing cards stating support for a union. This is un-American," said Chamber president Tom Donohue.

"The obvious intention and design of the bill is to eliminate private ballots as the primary means of certifying unions in this country," said Steven Law, the U.S. Chamber's chief legal officer.

"As a result, it would expose workers to harassment and intimidation by unions and also, arguably, by employers. We have a secret-ballot process because we believe this is the best way to make a choice free from coercion. This is basically an attempt by the unions to be able to do organizing on the cheap," Law told me.

Obama's campaign, however, says this isn't so.

"This is simply a debate over process. But it is up to the workers, and they should be free to choose their process," campaign spokesman Nick Shapiro said. "If they wish to vote by secret ballot instead of a card-check process, they can. The law does not strip them of that right."

But Obama, a lawyer, flatly says the bill "will allow workers to form a union through majority sign-up and card checks" -- bypassing the ballot process. Union leaders have said they prefer this to an election in which employers and unions compete for worker votes.

A national survey of 1,000 registered voters conducted by the Chamber in June found 83 percent were either strongly or somewhat opposed to a system where union organizers "would know which workers voted to join a union and which did not."

The House passed the card-check bill last year, but when it went to the Senate, it fell nine votes short of the 60 votes needed to end a Republican filibuster. With predictions of a six-seat Democratic gain in the Senate this year, Obama Democrats hope they can get just close enough to a 60-vote majority to pass this dangerous and very anti-democratic legislation.

Anyone...
..who was or is now a member of a union shud choke when they see this type of legislation. Unions have more indictments than organized crime and Jr Gotti.

To the union member 1
You oppose my Total Tax Reform plan called “One Tax And Done”. Do you really enjoy seeing many union jobs taxed out of existence?

It is your duty to sell the plan. It is your duty and responsibility to your union, to go to your union meetings and remind the other members that they pay a lot of money to the union as dues, and that a lot of that dues money (how much?) is given by the union bosses to state and federal Democrat-party politicians to keep them in office.

It is also your duty to remind the membership that these Democrat-party politicians are constantly passing more and higher taxes. These taxes have forced and continue to force many tens of thousands of employers out of business, out of the state, and out of the country, along with all the many jobs these employers provided. This is called outsourcing, and taxes are one of the main reasons for it. Hershey’s closing of the Luden’s Candy factory is a good example of this. Luden’s is a union shop, and the union jobs are going to Mexico, India, and Red China.
Ask members of construction unions, who have already lost their jobs to illegal aliens, about this.

The politicians you are paying to keep in office are taxing millions of union jobs out of existence, and are trying to get illegal aliens into others. In 1990 feds, and in 1991 PA Democrat-party federal-level politicians greatly increased these taxes to force tens of thousands of employers to put millions of Americans out of jobs. How many union members lost their jobs? Did the politicians ask for union permission to destroy jobs? All union members are paying the politicians to cut union members’ throats!!!

To a union member 2
You must get the membership to send the local union boss to the state union boss and to the national union boss. The state and national bosses should go to the state bosses and national bosses of all the other unions. All the union bosses should go to the state and federal politicians to tell them that they will not get any more money, support, and votes until they repeal all these destructive, union-job-destroying taxes and get rid of the illegal aliens who are taking union jobs. If they don’t repeal the taxes and deport the illegal aliens, use the primary election to give your support to another candidate.

At this time, the state and national bosses can give copies of “One Tax And Done” and “How To Get Rid of Illegal Aliens” to each politician. I’ll follow this letter with state and federal versions of it. You probably haven’t thought about it, but if all those taxes had been repealed by 1946, we would have one of the best railroad systems in the world, and you wouldn’t have to worry that Amtrak might go under and your job might not last for ten more years – a concern you’ve expressed to me. The money that these taxes take from Amtrak is needed by Amtrak to stay in business and provide jobs; and the jobs taken by illegal aliens are needed by you and your union brothers.

Your brother

It's Been Said Before....
But it bears repeating: If the unions offered anything of value to their members, they would not have to force them to join. Unionization is nothing but a scam perpetrated on the working class by rich fatcats like John Sweeney, who can't find anything truly productive to do with their lives because they are imbecilic morons who prefer to live off the hard work of others.

Slap an amendment
onto the Checkov bill that the employer also has the opportunity to look at the signed cards. If it's not a secret ballot, then it can't be a secret for anyone.

Your wonderful union negotiators have been the head of the parasite that winds up destroying the host.

Back when the Big 3 car makers were stomping in high clover, there was only one way to keep it up. Avoid strikes. Give the unions every possible goody they could come up with, including lifetime health care coverage.

That has worked out splendidly for all of us.

sad corruption
once needed to protect Americans, Unions have become tools of the predators. There's no justification for this, only obfuscation by the Socialists.

union pay
Union members have done quite well, with the help of the Democrat Party, because they have been allowed to base their wage demands on what they think THEY are worth, instead of on what their JOB is worth.

Our government allowed disgusting strong-arm tactics by union organizers, beginning with Harry Truman. When he wasn't screwing with the war in Korea, letting 54,000+ die for nothing in three short years, he was trying to destroy American industry. Today, they tell us what a great president he was. We're where we are because of Truman and the Democrat bozo's who ran our Congress into the ground for more than forty straight years.

The Democrat Party spends an exceptional amount of time whining about out sourcing to foreign countries. It's their fault! High wages for shoddy workmanship have driven most of the out sourced jobs out of the country. The UAW almost destroyed our automobile industry in the early seventies. With a little help from the Democrat contingent in Washington, they'll try to get the job done, this time around.

Unions = Mafia
Most of the larger unions have become really nothing more then a legal version of the mafia. They get to shake down both their employers and their employees with threats of force or strikes. Most of these unions should be investigated and broken up.

Union support is just one more reason why no should ever vote democrat.

Obama supporters? Time to assume
the position!

On your knees Obamies of all races and religions.

It is time for your daily call to worhsip your lord and master - SWAMIE-OBAMIE!

So get the H*** off TH, bow before your autographed photo of Obamie, and recite your sacred incantations:

Yes we can!(stolen from Hugo Chavez)
Yes we can!(stolen from Hugo Chavez)
Yes we can!(stolen from Hugo Chavez)

Now click your heels three times and say:

Obamie's the ONE (because OPRAH said so)
Obamie's the ONE (because OPRAH said so)
Obamie's the ONE (because OPRAH said so)

and then your favorite mantra of all:

Anyone against Obama is a racist...
Anyone against Obama is a racist...
Anyone against Obama is a racist...

There! Feel better?

Your Swamie-Obamie hears you because he is all hearing .... I mean have you seen the ears on this guy?

Geez! Is that a racist comment?

It probably is to the ZOMBIE-OBAMIES!

Gotta Love the Closed minded
Let's look at what union's really offer.
1) A safer work environment
2) A fair wage
3) Training to do the job safely and do it well
4) Motivated employees who are often more content
5) Oh yeah and let's forget "The Weekend, brought to you by the Union"

I think you all just fear what you don't understand. Unions can only help this country not hurt it.
Workers who are educated on the matter know the difference.

And for all those bene!fits, Girlie,
You only have to give up one thing!

Your job - when the union drives your company out of business!

Just like the UAW has brought the Big Three to the brink of bankruptcy....

Educated workers know that unions are for the mediocre. Advancement is by seniority only. If you excel at your job, it doesn't mean you'll get a bigger raise at review time. Seniority is the only thing that counts.

I despise unions.

Be careful what you wish for
The moment Card Check becomes the law of the land, just watch the stampede of statehouses passing right-to-work legislation. All you have to do to trace American prosperity's migration is look at a map of states that have strong right-to-work laws.

If these mutts try to force unwilling Americans into their retrograde unions, those same Americans will vote them out of existence in the states. Unions don't work well in right-to-work states because harrassing non-union labor is illegal. If a company is treating its employees well, has a competitive wage and benefits package and good working conditions and schedule structure for its people, the only reason a union wants into that situation is to skim money off the top.

Americans understand this, so when these thugs try to use political clout to push their way into private contractual arrangements where they're not invited, the folks at large will respond with political actions of their own. I live in a union state (PA). If the unions try this crap here, I believe they'll get busted with a right-to-work groundswell that will leave their card-check power grab high and dry.

Go ahead, union thugs.

Make our day.

Secret Ballot
I will at first forego the arguement over
whether or not union leadership are the
fat scum of the seedy side of what's wrong
with America. Maybe we can deal with that
topic at the same time we discuss the
charater of Americans who serve as board
members of corperations who basically vote
themselves raises.

The fact remains that it is very difficult
for unions to establish themselves. I see
no way of making the card signing secret.
Then the union has to get %50 of the membership
to vote for it in a secret ballot. BUT THIS
IS NOT %50 OF THOSE WHO VOTE IT IS %50 OF
THE ENTIRE WORKFORCE Regardless if they
vote or not. It also includes retired
and furloughed personnel.

So it's definately stacked against the unions.
You may feel that unions are a bad thing for
a lot of reasons but this change IMO only
evens the playing field.
