Obama' Flip-Flops Anger the Liberal Base

Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WASHINGTON -- Barack Obama is coming under increasingly heavy fire from his left flank for abandoning long-held liberal positions in an abrupt swing toward the center that threatens his candidacy.

After racing away from hardcore positions on trade protectionism, gun control, government wiretapping, the death penalty and even his vaunted troop-pullout plans for Iraq, his once-diehard supporters on the left are attacking his character and honesty and threatening to withhold campaign contributions or, worse, shift their allegiance to Ralph Nader.

"We've been hearing more from voters who are disconcerted about Obama's move to the right. We're hearing from antiwar folks, civil-liberties people and other activists concerned about his flip-flops and considering voting for Ralph," said Nader campaign representative Chris Driscoll.

Nader has seen a big increase in the past two weeks in his online fundraising, and a recent CNN poll shows his support rising to 6 percent, small by electoral standards, but enough to deny Obama a crucial battleground state where the vote is close.

Nowhere is the anger level toward Obama more intense than in the blogosphere, the cyberspace world that has helped to raise hundreds of millions of dollars from more than 1.7 million donors and whose activists have been his biggest fans.

"There is a line between 'moving to the center' and stabbing your allies in the back out of fear of being criticized. And, of late, he's been doing a lot of unnecessary stabbing, betraying his claims of being a new kind of politician," said Markos Moulitsas, leader of the Daily Kos Web site, the bible of the liberal netroots community.

"Not that I ever bought it, but Obama is now clearly not looking much different than every other Democratic politician who has ever turned his or her back on the base in order to prove centrist bona fides," Moulitsas told his millions of readers last week.

To demonstrate his displeasure with Obama's flip-flops on core liberal issues, Moulitsas announced he was withholding his $2,300 contribution to the campaign. "I simply have no desire to reward bad behavior," he said.

The biggest complaint from the party's grassroots activists concerned Obama's support for a Bush-backed bill to give legal immunity to telecommunication companies helping the government intercept terrorist calls and e-mails.

Complaints were coming into Obama's Web site so heavily last week that he personally went online to explain his new position. He said that telecommunications surveillance was "a vital counterterrorism tool ... to keep the American people safe."

But it did little to quell his supporters' outrage. On Democrats.com, a liberal advocacy group, Web-site president Bob Fertik said "progressives were shocked last week" over Obama's changed position. He urged supporters to temporarily hold their contributions in escrow accounts "until he demonstrates progressive leadership on issues we care about, like warrantless wiretapping."

Over at the heavily funded, ultra-left HuffingtonPost.com, blogger Joseph A. Palermo accused Obama of "blurring the line between church and state" with his faith-based program and warned the Obama camp that it was "treading on thin ice.

"If he continues to move to the right, he's going to alienate his most enthusiastic supporters ... who were responsible for catapulting him this far," Palermo wrote.

But if the Obama campaign thinks the reaction to his sudden lurch to the center on guns, trade and the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act is hurting him, wait until the full weight of his political shift on the Iraq war comes crashing down.

Soon after my Monday column revealed that a top defense adviser was recommending that significant levels of U.S. military forces should stay in Iraq to ensure its stability, Obama was sending clear signals that he was indeed moving in that direction.

In an interview with the Military Times on Monday, Obama suggested he was indeed rethinking his plan for a complete military pullout. Instead, he said, any troop withdrawals would be done "in a deliberate fashion in consultation with the Iraqi government, at a pace that is determined in consultation with Gen. (David) Petraeus and the other commanders on the ground."

If Iraq's security was in any danger at that time, "then that's going to have to be taken into account," he said. In other words, conditions on the ground, Iraq's security needs and the American commander in Iraq will shape and influence his decision.

Obama campaign representative Robert Gibbs dropped deeper hints of a more gradual withdrawal strategy Monday, telling CNN, "Obviously, you have to give commanders on the ground flexibility. We'd be crazy not to."

In other words, Barack Obama has abandoned the core promise of his presidential candidacy that he would end the war by withdrawing all U.S. combat forces from Iraq within 16 months -- a preposterous position in the first place.

Obama's new position is that it may take longer than that -- a lot longer. He promised his supporters "change you can believe in," but now, how can they believe anything he says?

Whoop de do
Obama's supposed move to the center is, as it always is with a Dem POTUS candidate, posturing & posing. We know darn well how he'd govern. Their supporters know who they are, &, as SunThe1 pointed out, if the kooky left fringe makes noise about it, that just gives them more camouflage.

OTOH I am fully confident the when McCain "runs to the center" (i.e. panders to the established Left, e.g. campaign speech supression, energy rationing, illegal aliens), he will so govern if elected.

The bottom line is: alienate, freeze out, & marginalize real conservatives & a real small-gov conservative agenda from the institutional parties, whatever it takes, whatever they have to say, whatever scare tactics they stoop to.

And Yet More Republican Flipfloporama
The rightwingers have worn out this tactic. Sure, Obama has tacked to the center in some respects (mostly in rhetorical emphasis, rather than substance), as politicians normally do at this stage, irritating some of his supporters. (McCain is doing it too--big time If you like flip flops, check out his 61 and counting: http://www.alternet.org/election08/90956/?ses=108dfee408e7 6760f0496cd2d3b90de5.) But most of the so-called flip flops asserted in this post and others, e.g., Obama supposedly changing his position on the war, are largely inventions or exaggerations of the Republican noise machine. If one actually reviews Obama's statements rather than the (mis)characterizations of those statements by rightwingers, consistency appears, not flip flopping.

Whenever the rightwing claims flip flop, check the facts. More often than not, it's BS.

Pitiful
Charles

I am embarrassed for you. Your racism is so evident! Remember Nobama is half-white! And wasn't raised in the hood! Nobama makes Flip-flop Kerry look like he was a dead fish! He changes course so often, he can't remember what he has said.

Just say No to O!

my 2 cents
"His supporters on the left are attacking his character and honesty"

I'm SHOCKED! I tell you - I am SHOCKED!!!

Everybody

I can't help but being amused by Charles' naivete and yes. his stupidity.

His conviction that Obama has not flipped on any issues is funny (even though he's voted for a FISA extension, among many other issues) is really charming. Charles is the kind of moron that Phil Graham is talking about.

But I might add that the idea that the stumbling, bumbling, doddering old fart who is running a campaign designed not to hurt anyone's feelings is even more amusing.

cube commander
What makes you think there will be debates?
I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't. Obama certainly doesn't want them.
Who's going to pressure him to participate?
The press seems to be happy sitting at his feet taking notes.

Charles
You are so funny, so mis-informed, and so stupid. Haley Barbour has done more for the blacks of the State of Mississippi than any governor in the last 50 years. He has more black aides than any governor in the last 50 years. He has appointed more blacks to high level state government positions than any governor in the last 50 years.

Where are you getting your information, the "Communist Daily" or the "Daily Kos"?

Be careful, your racism is showing:

"The percentage of Republicans who are white is so embarrassing that the figure is not published. In a typical election over 85% of blacks vote democratic. The percentage of Republicans who are male is also unknown but would appear to be about 80%."

So according to you it is alright for the Dumbocraps to receive 85% of the black vote. But it is not alright for the Republicans to receive 80% of the white vote?

(BTW, that also means that 15% of the blacks are voting Republican and 20% of the whites are voting Dumbocrap. This would mean that some blacks in Mississippi must approve of Governor Barbour's actions.)

BO is faking right, and his supporters..
...are dumb enough to fall for it.

Gee, should we believe what he says 4 months before the election, or what he's consistently said and done for 20 years prior?

Yep
Haley Barbour's friends include George Bush and Dick Cheney, who are shamelessly supporting Barbour's campaign for Governor of Mississippi, a state with a history of white racism and KKK activity. Bush's grandfather also supported white racists -- he financed the Nazis during WWII.

The percentage of Republicans who are white is so embarrassing that the figure is not published. In a typical election over 85% of blacks vote democratic. The percentage of Republicans who are male is also unknown but would appear to be about 80%.

George Bush became president only through the disenfranchisement of black voters in Florida. At least 120,000 mostly black voters were deprived of their right to vote in a state that has a history of disenfranchising black voters. The indifference of the Republicans to this fact and their near-violent opposition to a fair revote, which, God knows, they would have lost, highlights their disregard of the rights of black and minority voters. Republicans hypocritically patronize blacks and other minority voters to try to get enough votes to squeak into office, then they routinely oppose all policies that help the poor and support all policies that enable the rich to get richer at the expense of the poor.

Long time Republicans and closet racists Trent Lott and Bob Barr have also supported the CCC and remain unapologetic.

Racist GOP
The Republican Party has come full circle from the days of Abraham Lincoln and so disproportionately represents the interests of white people that it ought to be renamed the White People's Party. The most recent chairman of the Republican National Committee, Haley Barbour, associates himself with the most despicable kinds of white racists -- those who have money and power. Haley Barbour recently appeared side-by-side with the Council of Concerned Citizens (aka the CCC, the Coo Clucks Clan, and the Uptown KKK), a white racist hate group which is almost exclusively male and which is off-limits to blacks, jews, and other minorities.

Haley Barbour's friends in the all-white CCC wave confederate flags, espouse deporting blacks to Africa, claim the Holocaust was a hoax, oppose immigration of Asians, Latinos, and other minorities, have ties to the French neo-fascist Le Pen, and oppose the mixing of races which they call miscegenation.

Haley Barbour's CCC friends support the neo-fascist, nazi-revivalist, prison inmate Eric Zundel, the son of a German Nazi, in his fight against the Zionist "New World Order."

Haley Barbour's CCC friends oppose black voting rights and say "...negroes should not even be labeled as being in the same "nation" as Whites, much less should they be given any voting rights..." CCC writer George Crane (http://www.cofcc.org/articles.htm).

Haley Barbour's CCC friends, predominantly white male chauvinists, oppose women's voting rights and say "... it is absurd to allow females to sit on juries in our courts," and "There were no females in the Continental Congress and I don't believe any were necessary." CCC writer George Crane (http://www.cofcc.org/articles.htm).

Regal
Nah, racial politics is when some whore refers to his wife as his "Baby Mama" or when Fox News accuses him of being a muslim who attended a Madrassa. Race Baiter? Have you seen the number of white people at his rallies? I have yet to see any black people at one of McSame's events.

How about the GOP fundraisers implying that once he gets into office it will no longer be called the Whitehouse or when Rush (snicker) Limpballs tells a black woman to take the bone out of her nose - THAT'S racial politics.

Obama plays racial politics!
If Obama were anything other than a race-baiter in the tradition of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, he never would have said the following: “They’re going to try to make you afraid of me. He’s young and inexperienced and he’s got a funny name. And did I mention he’s black?”
So, if he walks like a race-baiter, and talks like a race-baiter, then...
Because with rabbit ears like his, he sure ain't no Jackie Robinson.
In fact, Mr. Obama could not carry J-Robs jock strap. Besides once Jesse is done with him he won't need a j-strap anyhow!

HAHAHA
So you guys are saying that McSame's calling Falwell an agent of intolerance then courting the endorsement of John Hagee is not a flip-flop?

You are making me laugh

AZPhil: I know, you're right...

But sometimes Charles is just SO stupid that I can't help myself.

(Is Charles allowed out without adult supervision??? Just wondering.)

Anne
You're wasting your time with Charles, who is clearly a phuquing moron.

LIES< LIES and DAMN LIES !
Just say no to the NObama "CHAMELEON", EVEN HE DOES NOT KNOW WHAT HE STANDS FOR AR AGAINST! Maybe he has a serious memory problem or he just thinks we are STUPID? Either way he is not worth support from any American.

No
That's because there aren't any

Charles: "McCain's Flip Flops" WHY?

THIS column is about Marxist Obama, NOT McCain.

Can you not discuss Marxist Obama's flip-flops????

McCain's Flip Flops
Let’s return, once again, to McCain’s flourishing flip-flop list, which is now a Top 11 list.

* McCain criticized TV preacher Jerry Falwell as “an agent of intolerance” in 2002, but has since decided to cozy up to the man who said Americans “deserved” the 9/11 attacks. (Indeed, McCain has now hired Falwell’s debate coach.)

* McCain used to oppose Bush’s tax cuts for the very wealthy, but he reversed course in February.

* In 2000, McCain accused Texas businessmen Sam and Charles Wyly of being corrupt, spending “dirty money” to help finance Bush’s presidential campaign. McCain not only filed a complaint against the Wylys for allegedly violating campaign finance law, he also lashed out at them publicly. In April, McCain reached out to the Wylys for support.

* McCain supported a major campaign-finance reform measure that bore his name. In June, he abandoned his own legislation.

* McCain used to think that Grover Norquist was a crook and a corrupt shill for dictators. Then McCain got serious about running for president and began to reconcile with Norquist.

* McCain took a firm line in opposition to torture, and then caved to White House demands.

* McCain gave up on his signature policy issue, campaign-finance reform, and won’t back the same provision he sponsored just a couple of years ago.

* McCain was against presidential candidates campaigning at Bob Jones University before he was for it.

* McCain was anti-ethanol. Now he’s pro-ethanol.

* McCain was both for and against state promotion of the Confederate flag.

* And now he’s both for and against overturning Roe v. Wade.

Flip-Flop Marxist Obama sounds

similar to this.....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lj3iNxZ8Dww

and makes just about as much sense....

Wait Until The Debates
Once the presidential debates begin, we are REALLY see Obama for what he is. He will be reduced to a stuttering fool without his teleprompter. He certainly can't think quick on his feet. And since the each debate will be covered in their entirety on TV/radio, he will not be able to claim his responses were taken out of context. It wil be truly entertaining.

BHO
It's incredible what dems must do to get elected. Especially Obama. He has to lie and pander to so many people that he has no idea what he even believes. The far left can never get elected, because this country is not far left. It's a freaking circus watching this complete moron go left then right, then left, then right again.

Obama will only change his mind
and to show how nuts he is for all those who religiously blog that the big O has run such a wonderful campaign that shows he has great experience: Dems. often do switch center-right BUT THEY DON'T DO IT ALL IN ONE WEEK! That's how dumb O. Hussein is.

At the risk of taking blogging seriously & not just posting emotional rants, I will mea culpa a post I made yesterday on orth’s warning Congress about bin Laden in 1987 & as called stupid by another obviously erudite poster.
I never claimed I watched the Iran-Contra hearings in 1987. I was in Egypt at the time. Ergo, I went online to find what I thought was affirmation of my assertion, but since discovered it was based on a fake email circulated years ago, of whose inauthenticity I was unaware.
North warned of Libyan terrorists, not the al Qaeda leader in 1987. Mea culpa.
However, from Frontline, PBS (not a cons. ource), for one, bin Laden was certainly known to Saudis as a dissident from his position in Afghanistan working against the Russians in the 1980s. He was also a client of the US when fighting the USSR invasion was part of the Cold War.
The bin Ladens & Saudi royal family have had a long, close but convoluted relationship that includes deaths of unresolved circumstances (1988 Texas plane crash for one) & an arrest warrant for Osama in 1993.
The US suspected Osama connections to the Twin Towers’ 1993 bombing, that fact surely implies the Clinton admin. and/or its intelligences were aware of bin Laden BEFORE 1993.
I’ll stand by my opinion that Sandy Berger stole Am. history by destroying National Archive material that had not been catalogued or copied, which itself is a matter of public and criminal record, and was not really punished for his crime, as any ordinary citizen who stole classified material and shredded it would be.

Not buying either
Will he run right and govern left once elected? Good question.

I would say he'd better not try to do otherwise, as the people who put him where he is are not exactly nice guys. We've actually seen before that doesn't end well.

As for the so-called vocal left, I was about to buy the notion that some Obama supporters were actually issue driven and dismayed. I think not. I think they're part of the ruse to dupe the populace (he's not really radical--see, the radicals are mad!).

I'm Not buying it either, Seawolf!

Dick Morris hit it in
his latest column. IF this commie gets elected and even suggests governing from the middle, the lefties in congress will force him to go left and stay there.
We must work to keep these people from gaining more seats in congress, tough job since the idiots we sent there last time blew it.
We OWNED the place and they gave it away by being more like the stupid dems than the dems themselves...throw them all out of the house and start over.

Clinton 1993 Redux?
Clinton also ran as a Centrist in 1992. In 1993 he had large majorities in both Houses of Congress an decided to govern as a Leftist. In 1994, the electorate gave him a big spanking. The Dems lost both House majorites.

Once you run as a Centrist, the electorate expects you to govern as one. Obama, is doing what he planned to do from the very beginning. He lied to his base to get the primary votes and money. I imagine he and his organizers believe he can do what even Bill Clinton failed to do: run as a Centrist, govern as a Socialist.

We shall see.

POLMsgt: Of course he'll return to his

true position IF he's elected....

But, as we've seen in the not so recent past, Marxist Obama will throw anyone under the bus. Just the kind of guy he is.

It is a "IF." Sgt. Slaughter was absolutely right... Fat lady hasn't sung yet....

Obama Supports Infanticide
This is according to Jill Stanek:

"Barack Obama is so radically pro-abortion he supports infanticide, as evidenced by his active opposition to the Illinois Born Alive Infants Protection Act. This makes him further left than any U.S. senator and even NARAL."

It really doesn't matter what he says this week, Obama voted for infanticide when he opposed the Illinois Born Alive Infants Protection Act. No pro-lifer should be fooled into thinking that Obama has changed his position on abortion in general and late-term abortion specifically. No pro-lifer should vote for Obama.

he has abandoned
nothing, he knows he can't win running on a leftist platform. His party knows this thats why they trot out more centrist candidates but then govern left. Their motto is run right, govern left. He will return to his true positions and ideals when elected.

Alright
At ease, maggots.

Sergeant Slaughter's here.

Obama flip flops more than a pancake at a greasy spoon.

Now, though it appears that the MSM pukes are out to give Obama his victory and will do everything they can to help him, the battle ain't over and I don't want to see any of you red-blooded conservatives giving up the fight.

It's a long way till November, and like a wise man once said, it ain't over till the fat lady sings.

Well, the fat lady won't be singing till the election's over, and when Rosie takes the stage and grabs the microphone, I'm betting she'll be singing a sad tune.

Let's get out there and give it our best, ya hear? Make sure to point out to everyone around you just how bad Obama as president would be for America.

Now get out there and raise your voices and go to work!

'Nuff said!

Move 'em out!

The Communist Left Is Locked In
This is just a repeat of what worked to gain control of both Houses of Congress. "Schumer's tactic". Here is the plan.

This is the Chuck Schumer tactic to win elections. The Liberal candidate takes the center-right position to get elected. The extreme Communist Left (Schumer's posse) knows the tactic ( it was the same approach used to win in 2006) but acts displeased. The act is designed to make the Centrist in America believe Obama's "faked lying position" by giving it credibility in the MSM and the major TV networks. The Centrist think, "Obama must be changing his positions because his donors are apparently upset". It is all a sham orchestrated by the Most Dangerous Communist Democrat in the nation, Chuch Schumer. Don't be duped.

I'm not buying it
This is political theater writ large, done with a wink and a nod to convince middle of the road voters that this communist is not what we know him to be.
Once they get him elected by bamboozling the masses, he'll revert to his true roots and the string pullers all know it.

The voters rejected liberals like McGovern, who was a patriot who defended this country, as too liberal, but that was long ago. The old libs were simply naive, this guy is further to the left than anyone who ever ran for President and is a danger to our way of life.
He is a puppet of the Soros crowd who want to destroy this country and put the UN in charge. No-one comes out of nowhere like he did without a lot of back room help, it just doesn't happen and we will be the ones who pay for it, dearly.

Hosekuervo writes:"I can assure you that

NO ONE on the left is going to switch his/her vote based on this flip-flop."

I wouldn't be too sure about that! Remember, upwards of 30% of your Hillary supporter demo-cretins have already committed to voting FOR McCain rather than vote for Marxist Obama.

Hard to tell what will happen.

Too Funny

Notice how the loony left moaned like they were gutshot about FISA? They're stealing our rights!! They're trashing the Constitution!! Wah wah wah.

Notice the deathlike silence today after Obama voted for it yesterday?

Dancer29,Ranger29
A new standard..changing nicknames 6 posts apart. Thank you for keeping the 29.

Do as I say, not as I do
T. Kennedy certainly didn't elect to go to an inexperienced Neurosurgeon, yet he and the liberal left urge and expect the American people to elect an inexperienced politician to the most important, demanding and complicated "Job Position" in the entire World.

wobbie
shh....no one cares what you think.

They are so angry that
they are all going to jump the fence and vote for McCain. Yeah, right.
As a proud member of the far left, I can assure you that NO ONE on the left is going to switch his/her vote based on this flip-flop.
There are probably 20 things that we want in a president. If we can get 14 or 15 from Obama but just 6 or 7 from McCain, who do you think we are going to vote for? Obama of course. Anyone who thinks otherwise is truly delusional.

Well he wants to be elected
and far left positions will never get you elected in the US. So you do what you have to. It not like it hasn't been done before (clinton). The democrats did learn that from Mcgovern in 1972 that a pure left wing candiate will lose big. So fool the uninformed voters the Democrats get because they demonize them from voting for any Republican.

Shocking, isn't it????
That BHO and his advisors have apparently just realized that if he truly believed half of the nonsense he spouted in the Democratic primary he wouldn't have a snowball's chance in November.

Go figure. The Obama bubble is about to burst my friends.
