Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

WASHINGTON -- If Republicans picked a theme song to describe the gloomy political climate they face this year, it would be "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head."

With Americans at war in Afghanistan and Iraq and the economy tilting toward recession, it is hard to imagine the election-year environment can get any bleaker for the GOP, though that seemed to be the case this week.

The consumer-confidence index plunged deeper, as the jobs picture grew darker, and gas prices continued to rise, up to $4 a gallon in places. The housing market, despite a rise in existing-home sales last month, remains in a slump; oil prices were more than $100 a barrel; food prices climbed higher; and economists say the country faces a serious bout of inflation following the Fed's interest-rate cuts and the declining dollar.

Fearing the worst, nearly 30 House Republicans have announced their retirement so far, threatening their party with further losses. The Democrats' House and Senate campaign committees are outraising the GOP, and generic election polls find that Americans will vote Democratic this year by wide margins.

Still, there may be a silver lining in those dark clouds up ahead. No one doubts the Republicans are running against strong head winds, but it begs the question: If things are this bad, why aren't Democrats trouncing John McCain in the presidential-preference polls?

Despite a pessimistic and unhappy electorate, the Arizona senator -- the war's biggest supporter who says he still has a lot to learn about economics -- has edged ahead of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton in the national head-to-head polls.

The reason: voter alienation over the bitter, divisive fight between their campaigns that shows no sign of ending anytime soon, perhaps not until the August convention in Denver, Colo., where a small cabal of Democratic superdelegates will choose the nominee.

Worse, both candidates have seen their credibility tarnished on several fronts:

-- Obama's admission that he had attended Rev. Jeremiah Wright's church for 20 years but had never heard him spew the anti-white hatred that has recently come to light in some of his sermons -- and his inexplicable eagerness to remain faithful to the incendiary minister for so many years.

-- Clinton's wildly exaggerated foreign-policy-experience claims that she helped bring peace to Northern Ireland and dodged sniper bullets while landing at a Bosnia airport, focusing new attention on her propensity to embellish and exaggerate the truth.

"It's been a bad couple of weeks for the Democrats, with Obama and Hillary continuing to snipe at each other, beginning the process of a thousand cuts," independent pollster John Zogby told me.

"What a difference a month makes, and it's only March. It's not looking bright for the Democrats," Zogby said.

"For Obama, it's his problems with the white vote, which we saw in Ohio, and problems with the Wright story. That's reflected in the national polls when a month ago Obama was leading McCain by six or seven points, and this month is down by six. That's a big swing," the veteran election pollster said.

"At the same time, Clinton was down five or six points last month, and by my polls, she's still down about the same. Both Democrats are experiencing a problem, at least for the moment, among independents, moderates and swing voters. It's pretty safe to say they can't win in November unless they get those groups back," he said.

Other independent polls where McCain was matched up against the two rivals painted a similarly gloomy picture for the Democrats and gave the Republicans some reason to be more optimistic about their chances in the general election.

McCain was leading Obama by 49 percent to 41 percent in the latest Rasmussen tracking poll, 47 percent to 44 percent in the Gallup Poll and 44 percent to 43 percent in the Fox News poll.

Clinton trailed McCain by 51 percent to 41 percent in the Rasmussen poll and by 48 percent to 45 percent in the Gallup survey, but led in the Fox News numbers 46 percent to 43 percent.

Particularly remarkable in McCain's early-spring lead: He was running ahead of Obama in key battleground states in Pennsylvania (by two points), Ohio (by seven points) and Florida (by nearly seven points), according the Real Clear Politics Web site that tracks all the polls.

McCain either led or was statistically tied with Clinton in Pennsylvania and Ohio, and had edged ahead of her by four points in a Democratic PPP poll in Florida.

So something else is influencing this election, apart from the weakening economy and Iraq. Swing voters, especially independents, are closely examining the two bickering Democratic candidates and don't like what they see.

McCain, for the time being, is running a steady-as-she-goes campaign, betting the economy is likely to turn upward in the last half of the year and that, in the end, the divided Democrats will defeat themselves.

Hopefully
Hopefully not to many Evangelical Christians will stay home on election day. If they do, it will cost Mccain and the Republican Party the White House. I hope Mccain reaches out to them. There aren't that many "moderates" to put Mccain in the White House on their own. If Mccain can pick up some of the Reagan Democrats it would be a big plus too. Most of those people don't like either B.O. or H.C. Far toooooo liberal. Mccain can win if he plays his cards well. He has come from behind before so why not again.

McCain?
Sorry, but this lifelong Conservative (and republican) will find an alternative to McCain and the democrat candidate, whoever it may be. McCain would be a great democrat candidate, but he and his ilk are killing the both the traditional free market, small government Conservative movement and the GOP.

Rich Boomker,
"I hope Mccain reaches out to them."

Ha,ha,ha....and what makes you think he would ever stoop this low? McCain detests conservatives, and even more so, evangelical Christians. He basks in his maverick status, liberal media adoration, and Democrat alliances (since he is a closet Democrat.)

Can you imagine
what it would be like to always have the
conservative party in power, or any party for
that matter. We would have another Mexico.

Don't cry too hard when you lose in the Fall.
It won't really be a loss, for many reasons.

P.S. Zogby has been known to miss the mark by
a mile from time to time.

No Go for Mr. O - Weak for Hillary
Three people from which to choose and the Demo's will lose. Bill Clinton, who emulated a Republican while in office, would rather have McCain than Obama and so would Hillary, but she can't get her arms around that thought just yet.

If the forecast for a black riot in this country happens when Mr.O looses, the the blacks will kill most everything Martan King accomplished. Even the goverment policies can't turn back sentiment.

Algore
Why do i have the feeling that Algore is on a crash diet somewhere, waiting to swoop in and save the day? People thought i was nuts when i said that last year. But now????

Get Real
McCain is on the verge of senility. He was acual talking about using common sense what a joke. He is as much liberal as a Republican. No liberalever had common sense. He has not reached out to us and won't. That was evident when he appointed a liberal GOP to run the convention.

Mr. Lambro
Thank you for your RINO-Gram.

I'm Glad that you and all your GOP RINO friends are so Happy!

However, Us "Conservatives" are pissed off and demoralized!

If you do manage to get that Lying Arrogant Senile Geriatric elected as the President, are you willing to take the blame when he starts a World War.

Who will you blame for the $5.00/Gal. Gas Prices to pay for our Carbon Credits.

Who will you blame when he nominates Judges who support McCain-Feingold and Miranda rights for terrorist.

How will the legalization of 20 million (currently Illegal) immigrants effect our jobs, our wages and our economy.

Ya'll keep drinking the Kool-Aid and enjoy your Party!

But, Don't blame me for the results of your stupidity and ignorance.

I'm going to write-in a "conservative" for my choice!

Polls?
Lambro, if you believe in polls, I have the results of another. I just took a poll among myself and concluded that those who write about the results of polls will have something to write about tomorrow. If McShame would win the election he will be all by himself - the Congress will have a supermajority of Demos to help him. McShame is running a one-subject campaign - all about terrorists. If he should win, we will have more of the same - since he is a follower of the CFR theologyies of open borders and "free" trade. You know that we have had 31 consecutive years of deficit trade? How can we afford to have that? Sell our assets, technology, and debt in exchange for foreign made goods and oil.

Raindrops
As long as Senator McCain heads a Republican ticket, the Democrats will always have hope.

McCain Better Rethink Amnesty
McCain keeps saying "Secure the border first". We know that he means amnesty next. The plan is to get the border state Gov's to declare the border secure. Conveniently, they are all on board the cheap labor express. Then his good friend Ted Kennedy will bring back McCain/Kennedy and McCain can provide his good friends across the aisle with their new permanent majority. I will not vote for amnesty.

viruddh writes:
What makes you think conservatives are in power now?

What leads you to believe that the GOP is a conservative party?

The GOP is floundering because it has treated the conservatives the same way the democrats treat the black community, they pander to us for our votes then turn their backs on us as soon as they are elected.

With regards to "Johnny Rotten" McCain, conservatives despise him for the very reasons the GOP is all gushy over him, he is turncoat hypocrite.

My Man Jones
"Three people from which to choose and the Demo's will lose."

Hey, wait -- they're all three Demos. Now whadda we do?

Disaster
We have the makings of a disaster, barring a miracle.I'm not saying never because he hasn't
decided (or isn't telling he's decided) who will be his veep pick. That could be a decider for a lot of conservatives, given the age of McCain.
Don't you just love it, how these loyal and true American patriots jump ship as soon as they
think they won't win their next job interview.
Good riddance. Maybe we can get some real
statesmen elected. We can't NOT boycot the election and stay home, we have to work to
get our Congress back. We may be in for a surprise regarding Congress on both sides, if
the Congress is down to 11% approval rate at the last count, it could go lower (lets hope) and we
get a new Congress. The Democrats that won in '06, most were conservative Democrats.

On the other hand....
On the other hand, with the economy tumbling, Iraq looking more tenuous, and McCain so fact-challenged that Joe Lieberman has to whisper the correct answer in his ear, Lambro's hopeful scenario may have little basis in reality.

Some Rainclouds Have Silver Linings
"f you do manage to get that Lying Arrogant Senile Geriatric elected as the President, are you willing to take the blame when he starts a World War."

Uh... Earth to Chuck, come in Chuck...

We're ALREADY in the middle of a World War.

"Fearing the worst, nearly 30 House Republicans have announced their retirement so far, threatening their party with further losses."

That's actually a good thing, if they're the "right" Republicans. If the candidates who take their place are real conservatives, we could be better off, especially if McCain loses.

What do you call 30 Republican politicians replaced by conservatives? A good start.

The country has moved Left
I'm sorry to tell you conservatives this, but the electorate as a whole is further to the Left now than you guys are.

Polls consistently show they want some kind of Government guaranteed health care reform. It could be a Romney-style mandate, but they are NOT just interested in tax credits + letting the free market decide. That's a non-starter, because they've had enough of losing their health insurance when they've gotten laid off and can't afford to purchase any on their own when they have no income.

The public has completely soured on fighting guerrilla wars against radical Islam and they want some non-military alternatives.

Young voters are absolutely convinced that global warming is a reality (NOT some left-wing hoax), and they are the future electorate of the nation as older voters continue to pass away.

The demographics of the electorate are changing too. The two fastest-growing voting blocs in America are Hispanics and single women. The GOP has gone out of its way to alienate both in the last few years. Social conservatives have been damning single women as *immoral* for premarital sex and bearing children out of wedlock. That's fine, but then don't expect those women to vote for you in elections after you've insulted them.

The GOP must change, just like the Democratic Party needed to change after the debacles of the 1970s. With Clinton they got a Democrat who pursued a more or less moderate course--a balanced Federal budget, for example. The GOP cannot continue to pretend it's still 1980, any more than the Democrats can continue to pretend it's still 1932.

You conservatives have become so insular--you talk only to yourselves--that you don't see how much the nation is changing. You have friends, neighbors, co-workers, who are just like you. If you lived in more diverse communities and talked things over with people of other points of view, you would see how times have changed.

SteveL - more bad news, huh?
"I'm sorry to tell you conservatives this, but the electorate as a whole is further to the Left now than you guys are."

But they shouldn't be. This is what 50+ years of relentless brainwashing will get you.

"The demographics of the electorate are changing too. The two fastest-growing voting blocs in America are Hispanics and single women."

Well, let's see... white, anglo-saxon, protestant males... carved the colonies out of the wilderness, founded the nation, built the industries and infrastructure (if you claim slave and coolie labor did it, be sure to include the horse who did more to build the nation than 3 time the number of black slaves or coolies), freed the slaves, rescued the world from left-wing fascists not once but twice, walked on the moon...

That's the track record of the old demographic. What's the track record of single females and hispanics? Feel free to include the history of Mexico if you really think it will help.

Just because the demographic is changing does NOT mean it is changing for the better.

Everyone's a liberal
right up until taxes go up...

Also, it is so interesting that libs want to invite the government into their lives, but then freak out when they think the government knows too much about them.

If you want someone to pay your bills, I guess you have opened the door for more intrusion. I want the government to stay out of my life and leave my money alone.

Announce VP now...
It would benefit John McCain greatly if he announced his presidential ticket right away while Democrats are still slugging it out with each other.

Choosing Mitt Romney would appease the talk show hosts, add financial expertise to the ticket, add the vigor of a younger man with a presidential bearing who could take over if McCain falters, and rally conservatives.

Do it now and the public would soon see those two looking noble and doing and saying the things presidents do. To watch the McCain/Romney team going about expressing what's best for America in a time of war would make an indelible impression on the public mind; especially when Democrats are still slinging mud at each other and figuring out how to fix their self-created dilemmas.

And McCain/Romney might bring some excitement back to the GOP campaign!

Announce Dr. Romney for the McCain/Romney presidential ticket today and Democrats might never recover...

McCain will not
be the nominee. A very loud scandal will derail him concerning his health. I hear he is wetting himself. And, talking to himself with pre-alzhimers symptoms.

OK Teaparty
Here's something to think about.

The challenge ahead is how to counter the mulit-billionaire George Soros funded Moveon.org, which is working hard at electing as many socialists as possible. A lot of the folks here on TownHall spend their time typing away at the keyboard, but mostly what goes on is a re-hash of the same old arguments and discussions.

"A Time For Choosing" has arrived, and that speech given over 40 years ago could be given today virtually word for word. So, the question is, what are we going to do? Do we keep on bickering back and forth over this and that issue, or do we start doing something to bring about a victory that will restore Constitutional self-government?

Those of you who are ready to act should take a walk over to the FIRESOCIETY.COM website. This site is totally grassroots, and every article is written by a member (membership is free of course), not some paid political writer.

A starting point for those ready to act is an article written by Arrowhead entitled "A Failure to Plan is a Plan to Fail". This excellent article has generated a group of folks who want to get together to reclaim the inheritance the elites have stolen from us. The battle is on for the future of our beloved country, and the left wing socialists are going all out! What are we doing?? Think about it, thanks. Joe

McCain=McShame
Today he is further showing that he disses anyone who is not a liberal-damocRat--He is the worst of all and puts GREAT SHAME on the Republican name. He IS NOT a Republican--sure wish Lambro had put in his contact address so that I could point him to McShame's speech today--3-26-08.
Tiresome and scary---BUT I hold fast to my faith that GOD--- Father God--Loving Father God--WILL deliver us from either of the 3 demoncrats
who are running now. I pray for that each day as each of them opens their mouths and show us how much we DO NOT need them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rallying The Conservative Base!
What would really rally the "Conservative Base" is if John McCain would nominate someone like Fred Thompson or Michael Steele as his VP running mate;

And then publicly resign his nomination and go check into a OLD Folks Home.

I hear they have some nice retirement homes in Mexico.

No
"Choosing Mitt Romney would appease the talk show hosts, add financial expertise to the ticket, add the vigor of a younger man with a presidential bearing who could take over if McCain falters, and rally conservatives."

Only if he resigned immediately upon making that statement. I will not vote for McCain, no matter who his running mate is.

Shouldn't the PARTY choose his running mate? Since we get to vote on who the Pres will be, why shouldn't we vote on who the vice Pres will be?

Hopeful for what???
Sorry if someone else has stated this, I did not read all the comments.

Did you hear McCain's speach today?? He is a blooming idiot of the first degree!!

BTW, I hate that song!! But it is appropriate for this election season as there are not only no good choices, there isn't a single one that is not ruinous for the country! Pick your poison, 2 marxists and a liberal idiot that will get the GOP blamed again for all that goes wrong when stupid liberal policies are enacted "for our own good"!!

We are in deep doodoo folks, and you better learn how to survive the appocolypse as it is soon upon us with these dolts being the best we can offer as leaders of the once greatest country in the world.

SteveL
"I'm sorry to tell you conservatives this, but the electorate as a whole is further to the Left now than you guys are."

Really? Then why aren't Republicans winning then? Since they have embraced what is essentially a left-wing agenda, minus perhaps the war, though I don't believe for a second that Clinton or Obama will put an end to conflict in Iraq. They may take it further, in fact. The Democrats are winning, not because they are popular, but because Republicans are unpopular. I don't think they'll learn that lesson.

"It's Raining Again" by Supertramp?
I'm so happy for the GOP & its hope. I wish them joy of it. The Elephant Wing of the one ruling party might take the White House Trophy this time. yay.

Now, is there something that gives conservatives hope? This whole campaign has been designed to marginalize & alienate them. Yet, if they & conservatism are no longer relevant, why does Mac insist on trying to put on the "C" word? Why is it so important to appeal to the conservative base, even if it's only "Wooo-ooo, vote Mack or it's President Hillary wooo-oooo," now that they've been shut out of the real nomination process?

If conservatives were truly insignificant, no one would bother worrying what they'd do in the general election. If conservatism as a guiding principle was dead, no one would be referring to it or trying to claim to in some sense be one?

If there is a large number of folks saying they support socialized medicine, it's because they think the only alternative is the present system the government has already meddled in & goofed up, & that "universal health care" will mean all they want & ask for, instead of actually being rationed as socialized medicine always is.

If there is a large number of people convinced [anthrogenic CO2 induced] global warming is true, it just shows the lack of science sense, credulity (esp to the UN, guys in white coats, & the Nobel Peace Prize), & the effect of 22 yrs of relentless propaganda. Not to mention until lately nobody talked about the true costs of living the dogma. Weren't we supposed to be frying in our own juices by now?

Nonetheless, I do find it somewhat hilarious the Dems are apparently getting hoisted by their own group-grievance petard, as their nomination has devolved into ovaries v. melanin.

Re: Don't Tread on Me
Actually, this is good news because if the independents, moderates and other swing voters move towards McCain. Whoever loses out on the Dem side is going to take their voters home with them. That gives Republicans a decent shot at a fair number of house seats and a few senate seats as well. They probably won't take back either house but I'm betting they reduce those already slim majorities to razor thin majorities. Which will be a good thing for McCain. Maybe he can make some of the deep spending cuts we've needed for more than 30 years.

McCain beats Hillary and/or Hussein
When people started talking about the dream team, I posted that a Hillary/Hussein or vice versa ticket would be a nightmare. So far, the numbers are holding up.Obama was the beneficiary of two candidates who were well known and disliked for different reasons (Hillary because of her husband's legacy, and Edwards for his failed VP bid). The "fresh face" idea resonated and Obama benefited from people looking for an alternative. His ideas were similar as Kerry's, his votes similar to Edwards and the only difference was that a "new face" was being used to propate the same old liberal ideas Kerry, Edwards and Hillary had propaged before. Now that Obama is ahead, he is being scrutinized like any leading candidate should be and he is not performing well under pressure. Seems like his adrenaline worked better when he was an underdog coming from behind because his "hope and change" message made sense. With all the new baggage americans have learned about the man of "hope and change", his message seems phony and the backlash permanent. I predict that Obama will get the nomination (superdelegates do not have the courage to say no to a bi-racial man), and that McCain will keep all the states Bush held in 2004 and add another 5-10 on this list. It will be a shame in November to watch how badly americans will reject the politics of racial divide and white hatred as engineered by Obama's mentor Wright. God Bless America and McCain.

Uhh, guys?
We could run Mondale and Paris Hilton on the ticket and beat you guys.

They're bombing the green zone.. are you guys sure you aren't over thinking this?

We got no more surges left.

You blew it... Bigtime!

Face the facts.

You hurt our soldiers.

The economy is circling the drain.

The country is divided.

You've got two choices.

Change or self-destruction.

SteveL- Hispanics&Women are Conservative
You are right that the demographics have changed to include Hispanics and Unmarried women in large numbers. You are wrong that Hispanics and unmarried women are liberal. Why? Most Hispanics take their Catholic faith seriously and remain staunch pro-life voters. They also value family and the traditional values that keep families strong, hence their support for traditional marriage. Unmarried women (whether divorced or single by choice or never married or gay etc) work hard to compete with men at work and provide for their families (kids and parents). They do not want their taxes raised, this makes them fiscal conservatives. They may be social liberals but if you follow the money, they vote for the person who will keep taxes low because they understand more money in their pocket allows them to provide for their retirement (no husband to support them so provision for retirement is critical) and their children. When Bush was re-elected with 51% of the electorate, hispanics voted for him by 44% and women by large numbers - national security and money matter to women, especially unmarried women.

Typical Repub
"Let's cut more taxes And start more wars."

"We'll just borrow the money from China."

"We'll be long gone before that bill is due."

"Let's vote for another bowling ball who doesn't know about the economy or who the enemy is."

"Yeah, we can keep going like this, forever."

SLAPPP!!!

Wake Up!

heavydoug, 38% that is the number
you and other democrats will remember as McCain sweeps the voters. It's not that the economy, Iraq and other issues are going well, it's that the democrats have two losing candidates i.e. hillary and hussein. Lack of Trust is not over come by money, social issues or even bad housing market - it is earned. So far, McCain has earned the trust of the american people by his service as a soldier and senator. Hussein and Hillary have not earned the trust of the american people. It's simple really, americans want McCain answering the phones in the whitehouse not Hussein or Hillary (with Bill's resume to help). I do agree, Paris Hilton would get more votes than Hussein (the youth vote).

“Still, there may be a silver lining in those dark clouds up ahead.” --
Do you mean the price of silver?

“The reason: voter alienation over the bitter, divisive fight between their campaigns that shows no sign of ending anytime soon, perhaps not until the August convention..”

Sorry, Donald, you opened the wrong door. This is going to be painful, loosing civility here. The ugliness and disenchantment fueling Democrat’s brightly burning fire is not for general audiences. Not to mention the rising star going nova. But amongst all their infighting – and camp Obama is above the mud line – an objective person should come to one question:

What about their talk that disagreement (dissent) is healthy, patriotic, and always improves and makes us stronger, better, and more respected? So much for that idealism….they have an election to “manage” here. And counting every vote, lets not go there.

It’s a good hunch this is the reason they aren’t loudly screaming about it themselves; and only use shadow tactics to drive one off, marginalize the supporters of one side, or random calls to step aside. The only positive hope we have is they continue to pound themselves into the ground in "operation divisive", without complaining about the affects of the process.

McCain & Conservatives
If I had read his speech today, instead of hearing him,I would have sworn it was a Democrat speech. We conservatives are "up Cripple Creek without a paddle".If by any stretch of the imagination,he should win,he will do everything possible to punish us.

Every time I get close to thinking I can hold my nose and take the medicine,he does something to make me think the cure is worse than the disease.

You are right, sir! Not only sweatin' to the oldies with Richard Simmons, but now Al Gore is probably getting weekly Botox injections. By now he's hired a whole new passel of feminists to teach him how to appear manly in 2008.

A historian yet to be born is going to win a Pulitzer someday writing a biography of Gore. It will be a fascinating study in paternal abuse: the story of an effiminate little boy, son of a great, powerful and corrupt Southern senator forced into his daddy's profession though completely ill suited to it. Trying to please the awful old curmudgeon, young Albert does as he is told throughout adolescence and college. Finally in a half-hearted bid to rebel he enrolls in a divinity school, to his masculine father's horror. Unable to take the rebellion to its conclusion, the young lad flunks out and reluctantly follows his stern father's footsteps.

Reluctantly he rises in the hated family business only to be stopped cold and turned into the buttboy of a ruthless but charismatic Arkansas governor. His father watches with disgust his son sit in useless isolation as an insipid Vice President and dies before the son achieves the Democratic nomination in 2000.

But even in death, Al Gore, Sr. judges his son and finds him wanting. Gore now richer than his father by far, still subconsciously seeking the dead man's approval, sits in terror that he will have to reenter the profession he despises and run for President. He fears a repeat of the terrible humiliation, but fears the mocking sound of his dead father's voice in his ear more: "You're a sissy. You're a loser. You'll always be a loser."

God, what a great and lurid story.

Come out of the closet, guy. Are you aware you are subconsciously writing gay erotica?
