Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

WASHINGTON -- It is very rare, if not unheard of, to catch a presidential candidate, especially a Republican, in the act of saying he or she would be willing to sign any tax increase that lawmakers wished for.

But that's what happened to former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who has rocketed to a statistical tie in Iowa with Mitt Romney, largely as a result of the former Baptist minister's support from evangelical voters in the nation's first caucus state.

The Club for Growth, an effective tax-cut advocacy group, has been on Huckabee's back almost from the beginning of his candidacy, sending out e-mail blasts to party conservatives that paint an abominable picture of his record on taxes.

Huckabee has been campaigning as a tax cutter, and indeed he did slash some state taxes during his two terms as governor, but he raised far more than he cut. The Cato Institute, which monitors the fiscal records of the nation's governors, gave him a poor-to-failing grade on spending and taxes.

The Club for Growth has also examined his tax and spend record and found it wanting. Its verdict: Huckabee could not be trusted to hold the line on taxes, let alone push it back.

Huckabee of course rejects the charges and said they do not take into account the many taxes he also cut. He insists he is a committed tax-cutter who could be trusted to shrink the size of government.

But seeing is believing, and the visual record backs the Club for Growth up; the Arkansas Journal blog has uncovered a video of Huckabee addressing the state legislature, virtually begging them to raise any taxes they wanted, and saying that he would sign the increases into law.

Here's what then-Gov. Huckabee told Arkansas lawmakers: "Again, let me state what I've said privately as well as publicly, but I want to get it on the record again. There's a lot of support for a tax at the wholesale level for tobacco, and that's fine with me; I will very happily sign that because it's a revenue stream that will meet the needs if enacted at a level that will help us to meet that $90 to $100 million target, and that's what I would begin to focus your attention on -- is the target.

"Some have suggested the retail level of tobacco; if that ends up being your preference, I will accept that. Others have suggested a surcharge on the income tax; that's acceptable; I'm fine with that. Others have suggested, perhaps, a sales tax; that's fine.

"Yet others have suggested a hybrid that will collect some monies from any one or a combination of those various ideas, and if that's the plan that the House and Senate agree upon, then you will have nothing but my profound thanks."

This does not sound like someone who is willing to hold the line on taxes, nor find places in his budget-as many governors have done-where he could cut spending instead of having taxpayers foot the bills for bigger and bigger government.

Huckabee says he would like to eliminate the Internal Revenue Service and replace the income tax with the so-called Fair Tax, which would impose a national sales tax on virtually everything we buy. But such a tax would be a disaster for this country, especially for low- and middle-income Americans who spend a disproportionate portion of their earnings -- in many cases all of it -- on the necessities of life.

It would wreak untold havoc on the business community, driving down retail sales and creating an underground economy that would undermine America's productive marketplace -- especially small businesses that produce most of the jobs in our country.

The Club for Growth was formed with one purpose in mind: to promote economic growth by lowering the tax rates, simplifying the tax code and providing tax incentives to expand business formation, savings, investment and economic opportunity. It has praised the tax-cut proposals of Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson and other contenders for the Republican nomination.

But last week Huckabee labeled the respected tax-cutting group "The Club for Greed," a charge that sounded more like the invective spewed forth from Al Gore, Howard Dean or socialist Bernie Sanders.

The Arkansas Republican is fond of bashing corporate CEOs and their salaries, thinks a higher minimum wage won't hurt entry-level job creation, and apparently doesn't mind slapping higher sales taxes on the most vulnerable people in our economy.

The next president will face huge fiscal issues in 2009: such as rising entitlements that threaten to engulf the federal budget and what to do about President Bush's tax cuts which are due to expire in 2010, a demise that would raise taxes by trillions of dollars.

That's when we're going to need strong, principled leadership to keep a likely Democratic Congress from sending income taxes through the roof. It's something Iowa voters need to think deeply about in the days to come.

I sure don't love Huckster
On Election Day, tell Tax Hike Mike to keep his big government ideas in Hope, Ark. We don't need them.

My letter to Huckster
I posted this once before, so I apologize if you've read it already.

Subject: My view of Gov. Huckabee

Dear Governor Huckabee,

I am a lifelong conservative Republican who happens to enjoy a game of Internet poker on occasion. Your response to the National Coalition Against Legalized Gambling’s candidate integrity quiz, where you stated that you support a federal prohibition on Internet poker, doesn't sound like the stand of a conservative. Rather, it seems you're for limited government until you find something you want. Then, when that happens, the sky's the limit!

First of all, I feel your position is foolishness. If your concern is compulsive behaviors, gaming is at most addictive to 1% of people, and technology can be used to keep those 1% offline via various exclusion and detection programs. Unfortunately, this won't happen under your big government prohibition plan (which involves snooping in peoples' bank accounts and Internet usage histories). Besides that, it's a question of freedom. Why should the rest of us be prevented from enjoying a game of poker in our own homes?

Your position is nothing but a red herring. It seems you simply don't like Internet poker, so you think it should be banned for everyone. Sorry, but that's not my definition of a conservative.

As you can't trust me to make my own decisions, I cannot trust you to represent me. As such, unless you change your mind, I will not vote for you or support your campaign in any way.

Sincerely,

TheEngineer

Hey Huckster--
It would be great to see you move to some little town deep in Mexico and stay there with your amigos.

FoF praying against/preying on freedom!
This is the kind of stuff you get with big government CINOs like Huckster...people praying to take freedom!

http://www.frc.org/get.cfm?i=PW07K06

This week's FRC prayer

Internet Gambling - FRC labored ceaselessly to see Internet Gambling laws passed and enforced last year. Just before Thanksgiving Recess, FRC's Vice President of Government Affairs, Tom McClusky testified before Congress against H.R. 2046, which seeks to repeal federal and state laws against Internet gambling and H.R. 2610, which would carve out an "exemption" for online poker. With Democrats in control of Congress, the gambling industry has found new life in its bid to make internet gambling legal, despite the unthinkable damage it will bring to families and addiction prone teenagers. Tom documented the toll gambling takes on society, including heightened incidence of bankruptcy, arrests, imprisonment, divorce, and more. Tom warned that "the anonymity of the Internet" would make "the troubles caused by gambling to increase exponentially."

FoF preying on freedom, part 2
A survey conducted by the New York Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services found that 10 percent of students in grades 7 through 12 had engaged in problem gambling over the past year [note that this isn't Internet gaming]. According to a 2001 report based on information from 22 surveys on gambling, adolescents are twice as likely as adults to exhibit signs of a problem or pathological gambling. Yet, liberals in Congress like Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA) are attempting to foist internet gambling on Americans with the promise of billions in added tax revenues (see testimony, tax revenues, Addiction).

Please pray that sufficient numbers of Americans from every state will oppose these efforts to legalize internet gambling. May they be defeated with sufficient strength that this will not become an annual fight! May God raise up leaders in every state who will effectively oppose efforts to make gambling a new revenue stream for the government at unbearable costs to the American family (Ex 20:17; Pr 1:19; 15:27; 16:33; 21:25-26; Rom 14:21; 1 Cor 10:24; Eph 4:28 ) (note that none of these verses say gaming is wrong, which is why the verses weren't quoted, I'm guessing).

FRC can pray all they want
We'll not give up our freedoms. The Poker Players Alliance now has over 800,000 members, and will soon have over one million. And there are tens of millions of other poker players in America.

So, I guess FRC will be spending millions of dollars annually in an attempt to limit freedom...money that could be used for a lot of better things.

I pray that we'll all fight for our rights, and I won't vote for someone like Tax Hike Mike who trusts the government more than he trusts the American people.

Geez, rough neighbahood.
Good luck.

Demonstrate ability
Before being allowed to run for president, a candidate should be required to 1) run a small business in which you have to make a profit, while giving your employees occasional raises to keep them, and 2) show that you can cut costs, or cut spending, or be innovative, and 3) handle some major crisis with style, in which your back is up against the wall, and you have to overcome great odds (such as the Olympics).

Romney's done all three. No one else has.

Thanks for exposing a lightweight
Shmuckabee is nothing but a lightweight and the current flavor of the month. Please, the last thing we need is another inexperienced shnook who sounds great on paper (are you listening Obama)but who won't be able to deliver at crunchtime. Shmuckabee is clearly all wrong for a post 9/11 world.

Draft Condi
If Obama can stay ahead of Hillary (slight chance) and takes the nomination the Republican Party could one up the Dems by running a candidate that is Black and a woman. The only thing that would be better is if we found out she was Gay. We would have a presidential campaign that looked like a Saturday Night Live skit written by Tom Clancy. Who would end up voting for who?

lambro's comments on the Fair Tax
Mr Lambro, I enjoy your articles, but you have shown yourself to be completly ignorant about HR 25, the Fair Tax. HR25 is the only tax reform proposal that would completly " UN TAX THE POOR'. Do yourself and your readers a favor and aquaint yourself with the facts first. I am a Fred Head who supports HR25 Don't spread misinformation.

Fair Tax: Good for the Country
Donald Lambro's criticisms of Huckabee for his support of the Fair Tax represent only more in a continuing set of populist misstatements and misleading arguments about the Fair Tax. The Fair Tax represents the only genuine tax reform and it helps everyone. It actually helps the poor and middle class disproportionately.

The Fair Tax helps consumption by driving down the cost of producing goods and services. If we had the Fair Tax, the economy would grow exponentially, and standards of living would rise.

Lambro and others like him should take the time and trouble to inform themselves about the Fair Tax and write a sequel that is fairer and more balanced. At least people are talking now about the Fair Tax.

Huckleberry-lib will
go nowhere outside of Iowa which has beome a liberal State.

The Smoothie
Mike Huckabee is a nice funny man who would make a lousy President. He's fooling people because he's a good communicator. Why have the other Republican candidates allowed him to "aw shucks" his way to Iowa without calling him on his record?

The Huckster is NO conservative
Mike Huckabee was regarded by fellow Republican governors as a compulsive tax increaser and spender. He increased the Arkansas tax burden by 47 percent, boosting the levies on gasoline and cigarettes. The Arkansas Leader.com editorialized that Mike Huckabee raised more taxes in 10 years in office than Bill Clinton did in his 12 years.

The Arkansas Ethics Commission held proceedings 20 times on the former governor. During his tenure, Huckabee accepted 314 gifts valued overall at more than $150,000, according to documents filed with the Arkansas secretary of state's office. (He accepted 187 gifts in his first three years as governor but was not required to report their value.)

Two months after taking office, Huckabee stunned the state by saying he questioned rapist Wayne DuMond's guilt and that it was his intention to free the rapist, DuMond murdered a women in Illinois after Huckabee set him free

Huckabee battled conservatives within his own party who were pushing for stricter state-level immigration measures, such as:.
- proof of legal status when applying for state services that aren’t federally mandated
- proof of citizenship when registering to vote
- Huckabee failed in his effort to make children of illegal immigrants eligible for state-funded scholarships and in-state tuition to Arkansas colleges.

Does Huckabee subscribe to his spiritual advisor Timothy LaHay’s views of the Rapture, United Nations, and a Palestinian state?”

Mike fails on so many levels as a true conservative.

Huckabee Would Make A Great Nominee
For the Democrats. He's clearly in the wrong party and should take his now unofficial leadership of the Religious Left to where he really belongs.

No mas RINO globalists!
The Huckster makes me VERY nervous. I would hope that voters would study carefully (he looks worse the more you read) and see thru the scripted, phony piety and veiled activism, but then we elected Jimma' Carter after another RINO (Tricky Dick) had stunk up the W.H. The embracing of ILLEGALS alone is a STOPPER! One RINO big spender who loves his Mexican amigos and imagines that he converses on the Heaven Hotline has been one too many!

NO Regularization Rudy, NO Huckster, and NO Juan McQuisling! Fred, Duncan, Ron Paul and probably Mitt would all do, but I know history: odds are against congressmen being seen as having enough gravitas for POTUS... even sitting senators are rare (JFK bought a close election, and it was Harding B4 that)-- hear that Shrillary?

Lambro's comments on the Fair Tax
Lambro has exposed himself as yet another ignoramus that has no clue what the Fair Tax HR25 bill is about, yet feels perfectly free to talk about it as if he actually read it or understands it. What's worse is that he is spreading lies and misinformation, and as a reporter for the Washington Times he has a responsibility to the public to check his facts, which he clearly has not. How hard is it to simply read the actual bill, or the plain-English summary available at fairtax.org? Apparently Donald Lambro has plenty of time to spread lies, but he's just too busy to check his facts. I won't be reading any more articles by this discredited hack.

Mark, Tampa, FL

To Tryor
By your three criteria anyone who runs a successful hardware store or gas station would qualify to be President of the United States. May I suggest instead that we consider a Letter to the Editors in yesterday's New York Times? It proposes that crtitical prerequisites for a presidential candidate are "1) wide-ranging domestic and international experience 2) a history of making sound policy proposals 3) a good education that includes a background in economics...".

I googled Reverend Huckabee. His only education consists of a BA from Ouachita Baptist University and "attendance" at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary ("attended" usually means "did not complete the degree" and "attended" is the word used in his official online biography). He has no background in law, social policy, domestic or foreign affairs, or economics, all crucial elements of government.

On television Reverend Huckabee seems like a very nice man. But education does mean something: if we have learned nothing else from the tenure of George W Bush, we should have learned that likeability and religious conviction alone do not make a statesman. Likeability and religious conviction guarantee appeal to a certain segment of the American population---one that usually cares little for education.

Why does Townhall
Even post opinions by the same old nitwits who have obviously read the FairTax bill, nor understand it (keep in mind I am giving Lambro the benefit of the doubt that he isn't purposely outright lying).

Criticize Huckabee all you want on his record in Arkansas, but don't purposely misrepresent the FairTax plan.

Huckabee, Rudy, McCain, and Mitt are
all in the love thy neighbor (to the South) game, and only recently converted to the various dodges they've concocted to obfuscate their true intent to rectify the Illegal Alien problem - by making them all legal.

NONE of them will win, because no matter how much the Press keeps telling us they are our only choices, there are others, who've been on the right side of the issues (Guns, Taxes, and Amnesty) all along.

Duncan Hunter and Fred Thompson are both right there, and always were, but unfortunately Hunter does not seem to be running in NH, where I live. He never campaigns here, and I've never seen an ad, so I don't know that he has a chance.

Fred Thompson is not as charismatic as we all hoped he would be, but he is right on all the issues, and has been for ever. This is not all a sudden awakening for Fred, and we need have no fear of his reverting to some previous, and long held stand that is opposite of his current stance, like all the above mentioned candidates.

I urge everyone to vote in the Primaries this time. I am, and I'm never voting RINO again. How much worse could the Dems be, if we keep voting for Dems in RINO clothing?

Typical
Not only does Mr. Lambro know nothing about HR25 but as is so typical of a certain ilk (look at type of individuals that agree in comments) he allows not one word from Mr. Huckabee in response to his charges of "begging them to raise any taxes they wanted." Avoiding a two-sided discussion is of course a much easier way to paint any false picture a demagogue is after including federal finances and a small state finances are equivalent and can be handled in the same manner. Mr. Lambro could also do a better job of sounding like he is offering his own ideas rather than parroting what he read from Robert Novak.

What would happen to the Club?
Just one question about this attack on Huckabee!

If the Fair Tax is Enacted!

What Would happen to the Club that is Basshing The Gov.?

FairTax
It's obvious that Mr. Lambro hasn't read The FairTax Book by Rep. John Linder And Neal Boortz.

Lilly, don't be too enamored of that
precious education. Keep in mind the outlandish excesses on College campuses, and how narrow minded they all are. Only the narrow script of the Left is allowed to be taught, and any opposing voice is screamed off the stage, if not violently ejected by the oh so open minded audience of those carefully indoctrinated students.

Also, bear in mind, the one person you hate the most - George Bush, is a very well educated man, having attended the exact same college as John Kerry, at nearly the same time, and had earned a higher grade point average, to boot.

As to experiences, his FATHER was the President of the United States, and both he and his brother were Governors of two of the largest states in the union, while Hillary was merely married to a president, while she was baking cookies and standing by her man.

George also owned a business, and has experiences of being both a rowdy boy, and a religious man, and knows well the differences.

I can think of a lot of mistakes George has made, and Illegal Immigration will stand as his biggest failure - not the war, but believe me, it is not because he is not educated. I believe it is most likely his liberal education (read indoctrination) that CAUSED the flaws in his policies, NOT the lack of it.

Huckabee and taxes
Huckabee is truly a very bad choice for any fiscal conservative. This video will help. He has 2 main support groups. Radical Evangelicals and Fair Tax advocates. They have run his campaign so far.

That is a loser combination in the general election.

for Jim
Jim writes: "The Fair Tax helps consumption by driving down the cost of producing goods and services. If we had the Fair Tax, the economy would grow exponentially, and standards of living would rise."

The Fair Tax is UNMANAGEABLE and UNENFORCEABLE, do you realize that?

How is the Federal Government going to collect the tax?

Every time my neighbor down the street has a yard sale, he's going to pay tax on the sale of his items? To whom? When?

Right now, with the current system, I have to report on IRS Schedule D EVERY sale of any stock or mutual fund I own, so I can compute the capital gains tax on it. That is already a reporting nightmare. Would you like everybody in America to have to report every single purchase and sale of every item and every service to the Federal Government?

What would most likely happen is that there would be widespread noncompliance--folks would simply not report their sales to the Federal Government. And the whole thing would collapse.

European nations have experimented with national sales taxes and they failed for just these reasons. That's why they ended up going to a Value Added Tax (VAT) instead--it's simpler.

And one more thing: Here in America, going to a FairTax and eliminating the current tax deductions for owning real estate property would kill the real estate market in the U.S. The only reason why anybody ever buys a condominium (which is a glorified apartment) rather than renting an apartment is because of the tax advantages: The deductability of mortgage interest, property taxes, etc. Take that away and the condominium market would collapse.

Right now, with the subprime crisis, the real estate market is in enough trouble as it is. Don't add to it.

As for Fred, well I think you need a heartbeat to win and you cant put people to sleep when you speak. Look what happened to Dole.

I want to second the urge for everyone to vote in the Primary for whomever they think is best. (even if it is Paul). I will be doing my PA primary vote by absentee ballot.

Rudy and Huck Answer to Illegal Aliens

Pretty much the same as Hillary and GWB. Lip service to border security and "Comprehensive Immigration Reform", amnesty. We tried that once in 1986 and Reagan thought it the worst mistake of his terms. We now have 10 times the number of illegal aliens. We will either elect a President who will uphold the laws or one who will change them to accomodate the illegal aliens. If we do the latter, we are voluntarily committing national suicide.

Huckabee, Dems. to meet retired officers on torture
Should Bush meet with retired officers on torture?

THILL-Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee so far is the only Republican presidential candidate scheduled to meet in Iowa with a group of retired generals and admirals to discuss military detention and interrogation policies.

Human Rights First, a non-partisan human rights advocacy group organized the meetings. It invited all of the presidential candidates to participate in the meetings.

Huckabee, who polls indicate is surging in Iowa, is scheduled to meet with the retired officers on Monday.

Democratic presidential candidates Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.), Barrack Obama (Ill.), Chris Dodd (Conn.), former Sen. John Edwards (N.C.) and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson will also meet the retired officers in private one-hour meetings between December 1 and December

Agreed! And if we stop paying for all the illegals health care, that alone would save the government untold millions. We have a very serious election coming up and if dead people or illegals start voting, we are in VERY SERIOUS trouble! The answer is Hunter/Tancredo the only two with the gonads to get something done about this crisis!

Hunter’s best quote: Move away from the Ted Kennedy Wing of the Republican Party. (Jun 2007)
To libs there is no lie, it is expedient exaggeration!

Huckabee
Not only wanted to give scholaships , welfare, food stamps, doctor and hospital care, and wanted to give the vote to illegals.
He went to Mexico in 2003, and visited Vicente Fox. He asked them to set up a consulate in Arkansas. He rented them office space in state offices for $1.00 per year. Immediately, upon opening the consulate, the Mexican govt. gave out countless "matricula consular" I.D. cards to Mexicans. This enabled them to send billions of dollars to Mexico. The FBI said these cards a security risk. The consul also encouraged civil leaders to advocate for illegal immigration.

Why aren't people looking up this man's record?
I don't understand it.Why are they letting him just say anything?
I agree with the "fair tax", but he won't pass it.He's just saying it to get votes. He is such a phoney, that to see him rising in the polls scares me.

Anarchist foolishness pretending to be "
I see the anarchists (I mean "libertarians") are out in force today, trashing someone who doesn't tow their "destroy all government" party line. That's not conservatism, nor is it an electable position.

Sadly for them, even the facts are against them.

Huckabee CUT taxes repeatedly as governor, more than anyone in the state's history in fact. When he left office, the state income tax was just one percent higher after 13 years.

Huckabee believes in spending money LOCALLY. Just like Reagan, he raised funds on a statewide basis, and I might point out that Huckabee had an overwhelmingly Democrat legislature.

The funny video, upon which this fellow based his entire column, is out of context. Governors, unlike Presidents and US Congresses, cannot simply borrow more billions and keep spending. After a dangerous shortfall, the Dems were stonewalling him and refusing to fund government. Get some context, people!

Lambro's mis-information
Lambro can shovel it. Huckabee had a majority democrat legislature. He had a budget to meet and the worst roads to fix, he was asking for money to fix the infrastructure. Read this:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/12/02 /MNOBTMNEV.DTL&feed=rss.news

Lambro does not understand the fair tax. It does not punish the poor, and why, as a conservative does he care? Huckabee shouldn't care but Lambro should? Lambro simply doesn't like it that his favorite lost to Huckabee in the CNN/youtube debate. Pitiful article.

Beware The National Sales Tax
As I look at the horizon of coming taxes, I shudder at the National Sales Tax. I have seen to often local and state legislatures "massage" the sales tax rates under the radar by 0.01 percent here and there until it addes up.

As Senator Dirksen from Illinois once said, A million here, a million there, pretty soon your talking real money.

Misrepresenting Huckabee

It sounds like Lambro has taken one individual situation where Huckabee pushed for a tax on tobacco in, and tried to scare Huckabee supporters into thinking that he might readily sign any tax bill as President.

Also, the Fair Tax does not tax anything for anyone with income at or below the poverty level. What's more, with no payroll taxes, they get to keep all of their earnings, which is like an automatic raise. AND if they earn more than what is considered the poverty level (which already covers more than the very basic necessities of life), it is not taxed if it is spent on used items. So the FAIR TAX increases the spending power of the lower income earners.

To say that those who MUST pay a higher rate on their earnings above the to be fair, is kin to socialism. Giving to the poor is commendable, but that should be done individually from the charity of the heart and not mandated by the government.

Huckabee doesn't qualify!
You are so right, Mr. Lambro. Huckabee, as President, would be a disaster for this country. He has no place to go after Iowa though.

SteveL
Please read the legislation, the book, or the web site before ranting.

The consumption tax is only for new purchases - tell your neighbor to quit worrying about reporting the sale of his lawn mower to the govt.

On Misrepresenting Huckabee

Oops, the first sentence was supposed to read:

Ift sounds like Lambro has taken one individual situation where Huckabee pushed for a tax on tobacco in Arkansas suggesting different ways it might be done, and is trying to scare Huckabee supporters into thinking that he might readily sign any tax bill as President.

Huckabee is a mistake
When Huckabee first came on the scene I liked him and thought how refreshing this man is. But futher notice caused me to change my mind. No one who is soft on illegal aliens or on citizenship for them or one who supports giving them anything they ask for should even be considered for President. Haven't we learned with Bush just what happens if our President doesn't listen to America on the subject. I can't help thinking that if we elect Huckebee we will be getting another Jimmy Carter--all flash and no substance. If we elect Guiliani we will be getting a republican Bill Clinton. This is perhaps the most important presidental election in this century and we need to think long and hard on who we vote for. I like Hunter, Tancredo, and Thompson but because the press and media are not bringing them forward no one is thinking of voting for them. What would happen if voters voted for either one of these three men and then took the primaries, putting all the pollsters to shame? I wish something like this would happen. It seems that American voters let the press, media, and polls influence them in the way they vote. I for one am voting for one of these three men--Hunter, Tancredo, or Thompson. I haven't decided which one yet but I do know I am not voting for Huckabee simply for his stand on immigration or the children of Illegals. It's not the American public's fault these illegals bring their children into this mess and help even their children break the law. What happened to the "Rule of Law"? It sounds nice and ethical to talk about the "rule of law" but it only exists when it is conveint for the candidate and laws are not enforced. What does this say about a candidate for any office? That it's okay to break the law where illegals (both adults and minors) are concerned. This subject really angers me and I hope the American people wake up where Huckabee is concerned.

Donald Lambro, his ignorance of Fair Tax
Mr. Lambro illustrates his ignorance of the Fair Tax quite well. He writes that the Fair Tax is a national sales tax. It is not a national sales tax!

The Fair Tax simply replaces the embedded taxes that are passed on to consumers by the product manufacturer, the product distributor, and the product retailer. These embedded taxes are treated as costs by the manufacturer, the distrubutor, and retailer. These costs are transferred to the consumer. However, the taxes that are transferred to the consumer by the manufacturer, the distrubutor and the retailer are not transferred efficiently. The manufacturer, distributor and retailer are not effecient tax collectors. The Fair Tax replaces the embedded taxes of the manufacturer, the distributor and retailer. The tax is part of the cost of the product purchased by the consumer.

A $100 blender currently has $22.00 of taxes embedded in the price. The $22.00 are the taxes paid by the manufacturer, the distributor and the retailer. The Fair Tax replaces the embedded taxes with a "Fair Tax" of $22.00 that is sent to the Federal Treasury directly by the retailer.

The manufacturer and the distributor do not collect, or pay any taxes because they are costs of operation that are passed on to the consumer in the price of the product.

Mr. Lambro needs to do his homework before he starts to knock the Fair Tax.

Doc
Re "why don't we stop giving the illegals health care". In some policy course in school the first thing they taught me was that a society's people will not support a law that goes against their values. I don't think it is our value that a woman in labor should be turned out into the street or that a child with a temperature of 104* should be denied an antibiotic if that's what he needs. Or that a young man with acute appendicitis should be told, "Go home and wait for your appendix to burst". True, there are a few sadists among us (one townhaller posted a while back that illegals applying to an emergency room should be loaded into a waiting van and trucked to the border) but most Americans use common sense and common decency.

You would also run into medical ethics. Not many doctors and nurses I know would be willing, nor would they be allowed by their professional societies, to deny treatment to the acutely sick.

Finally, there's the issue of contagion. Back before the turn of the 20th Century it was very common for epidemics to start in the slums, among the poor, and then spread to the rest of the town. Common scourges like diphtheria and whooping cough were conquered through programs of massive innoculation. Many of us still living remember yearly epidemics of polio and measles: again, innoculation has stopped these diseases in their tracks. Germs don't know the difference between a child whose parents are illegal kitchen workers and a child whose parents play golf at the country club. All children must receive adequate health care not only for their own sake but for the sake of the public health.

Wake up Iowa
You're going to sell us John Edwards in Arkansas clothing.

Huckabee has the same populist message as Edwards. "The Huck" is a total lightweight, with the meager funds to match his meager message. Is this guy honestly the one we want to promote?

"Hey America, if you're not evangelical, don't join the GOP, because those are the only people we'll nominate or represent."

Reagan is rolling over in his grave right now at the very notion.

WIDEN the tent, don't shrink it.

As a conservative Repubblican
I think George Bush has only done about three things right: he has advanced the goals of social conservatism with good judges, he has been firm in the war on terror and he pushed through some good tax cuts. His compassionate conservatism just turns out to be more big spending socialism and then there his horrible position on illegal immigration and shamnesty.

Mike Huckabe is just a continuation of George Bush except that I have a hard time imagine him being as tough in the War on Terror and he is obviously not a tax cutter. That doesn't leave much to like.

The Huckster is just a religious socialist. I think he is in the wrong political party.

Skeptical
I've been skeptical of Mr. "gee-whiz, aw-shucks" Huckabee since day one. He's not the man for the job and definitely isn't a conservative.

Huckabee
Under Huckabee the Arkansas highway system went from worest to best and a $200 million budget shortfall turned to a surplus of $844M. There was also a 2002 court order to equalize school financing among school districts in times of a sagging economy. The income tax surcharge issued at that time was temporary and was repealed after three years.
Lambro shows a profound lack of understanding of the Fair Tax. Apparently he does not know the Fair Tax includes a consumption allowance rebate based on the poverty level. Low income Americans would receive a monthly payment from the government so they could spend all their money up to the poverty level and not lose one penny to taxes plus there would no longer be a payroll tax on anyone. Under the Fair Tax businesses would also no longer have to pay taxes on profit or have the paperwork involved in income withholding which would somewhat offset that new federal sales tax. Lambro also writes of an underground economy and I'm glad he brought that up. Could it be that the underground economy now in offshore accounts avoiding taxes on profit would come back to US soil and those individuals now avoiding income taxes through the underground economy would have to pay tax every time they buy something with a Fair Tax?
Finally, with a Fair Tax there would be no need for a IRS. Wouldn't it be good to not have to do record keeping for any potential IRS audit? Go to FairTax.org and get informed.

Lambro is an idiot
I cannot believe (I acutually can) that a reporter from a major newspaper would make such stupid comments about an idea like the fair tax. The information is so readily availible that anyone with a computer and five minutes could rip his comments on the tax to shreds. Lambro, do some research please. I am not a Huck supporter, but at least don't say things that are blatently not true to try to make your point!!

Fair Tax mis info
To Steve L,

All of your ingnorant comments on the Fair Tax are dealt with in the Fair Tax book by Neil Boortz. Suggestion, read the book and then comment so you don't sound ignorant.

Unknown Governors
Cater, Clinton, Dubya... they appeared out of nowhere. They implied they were far more conservative than they turned out to be. A now, after only a few months in the national spotlight Mutt romney and Mike Huckster-Bee are pulling the same shenanigans. A vague, spotty record downplayed as they loudly proclaim the mantle of Reaganism. They have not been on the scene long enough. They hadnt taken part in the national debate on any issue. Unknown governors should not be allowed to trick their way into the White House.

Irresponsible journalism
This is irresponsible journalism. It either indicates that you are too lazy to do proper research to put that small clip in proper context, or it indicates that you are withholding information, which makes you unfairly biased with an intent to mislead your readers. Either case is unacceptable.

Please rectify the situation by reporting WHY Huckabee said he was agreeable to raising those taxes. There is a very good reason for it. If the money was not raised to accomodate a federal order to increase spending on the educational system in Arkansas, the government in that state would have shut down. Huckabee had made several suggestions to his legislature on how to raise the money, and they refused to approve any of his measures. So in the speech, he was telling the legislature to come up with their own ideas but to do it fast... they were down to the wire and faced with having to cut funding from prisons or healthcare or other vital programs.

There, I just did your work for you. It really wasn't that difficult. You should try it sometime.

Compassionate conservative =
... another liberal Republican. The Huckster's tax record in AR is very close to a compassionate Democrat, Bill Clinton.

Compassionate conservatives ... be afwaid, be vewy afwaid.

PS Lambro doesn't know the Fair Tax from first base, if you get my drift ...

3 dawg

You can also read the communist manifesto on the internet and gleam some "facts".

Facts are as facts work out after they are applied. The "fair tax" would be very unfair if ever applied.

It sounds cozy, but making it pay the bills will require some tweaking and some middle class tax payers hurt.

Think in real terms, you know the regime, the real world and what history has taught us about grand schemes. They almost always let you down.

Only a true flat tax would be good for the country, remember, America.??.

Huckabee is the logical consequence
3 liberals
One a Liberal Mormon flip-flopper
one a Liberal that married his cousin and is not smart enough to flip flop on issues like abortion, and gun control, and national soverignty
And
One a Consistantly Honest Liberal Baptist Minister.

Is their really a choice? When Conservative Americans wake up and see their choice they either get angry or vote for the guy that makes the most sence.

Huckabee - tax hiker?
Yeah, tobacco tax hike. Really representative example there.

The FairTax is the best tax plan going. It gets rid of the parasitic drag on the economy which is caused by compliance with the current tax code, to the tune of at least $300 billion.

For all who complain about losing this, that, or the other tax deduction - what good is a tax deduction when you're not going to be paying any income tax at all? These same people would complain about a car that runs on air, on the grounds that it gets lousy gas mileage.

If Romney is the nom, count on me to vote for the Libertarians, and look forward to a President Obama.

Huck, Mitt and Paul
Huck will most likely win Iowa. My take - the evangelicals are more concerned about guy marriage than high taxes. When it comes down to voing, they can't go with a Mormon because they don't really know or trust him. But don't count Mitt out yet. And, yes the nasty anti-Huck ads will be running soon - the joy of being a front runner.

My guy, Paul, may well surge into third place in Iowa. If money can buy votes, we will definitely be there since most of us are going broke sending every dime into the campaign. Too bad the evangelicals can't tie the freedom message to their own situation. Maybe some day in the future they will get back to the truly important issues.

Fair Tax and the Poor
Under HR25, if a poor family spends all their money, they would still pay no taxes. Everyone gets a prebate, which is calculated according to the poverty level as determined by government statistics, based on the number of people in his family.

C'mon Lambro
I do not support Huckabee or any of these elites, but you should give a honest appraisal of someone when you write an article. You did not do that here.

Still, Huckabee is simply another of the elites that control Washington. The truth is that we cannot afford another of these elites from either party to govern this great nation. To allow that is going to guarantee more big government, less personal freedom, and greater influence to the internationalists who hate America.

If we are going to save the country as a limited government home of freedom for our kids, we must change how we think. We must ignore the DEM/GOP/MSM propaganda machines that are hard at wotk seeing to it that power remains in the hands of the elites. They do this by promoting the big lie that only "they" have the necessary wisdom, knowledge, and experience to govern. We are told we have no other choice, nowhere else to go.

The other trick to keep us unaware and themselves in power is to keep the liberal/conservative ideological battle alive. When they do this, we are tricked into believing that the party (Dem or GOP) is the only thing that will protect our interests.

These two big lies are destroying the future of our country because the elites engage in strict partisanbship to maintain power and there is no leadership to be found in Washington! Will the prebate be set by income? So if I make say 100 bucks a week then my prebate would be xx% of that 100? So even tho I pay the tax when I shop, in reality I have paid nothing because of the prebate IF I am below the federal guideline level. I mean the figures only as an example. Huckabee taxes and context via Lambro
I guess it's not unheard of for a columnist to base their reporting on a portion of a story that is taken out of context. Mr. Lambro you have done just that, regarding Huckabee's comments to the Arkansas legislature.

Perhaps next time you you'll include the fact that Huckabee if elected president has taken the no tax increase pledge. Or that upon leaving as Governor Mike H left over 850 million in surplus for Arkansas.Or that the net increase in sales tax over his ten plus years in office was one cent. But you'd probably prefer our current federal tax code to a fair tax or flat tax...
That's what I read into your article.

Fair Tax
It is really ashame that so many people who critize the Fair Tax, do not understand the Fair Tax. Don Lambro has clearly embarrassed himself. The Fair Tax would benefit, not hurt, the poor. More importantly, if the United States did adopt the Fair Tax, the entire country would become a tax haven. We would experience economic growth of historic proportions.

Huckabee
In Iowa, Romney now trails Mike Huckabee by three percentage points despite outspending Huckabee 20-to-1.

In addition to the daily tracking poll, Rasmussen Reports provides weekly results to provide a longer-term overview of the race. These updates are based upon nightly telephone surveys. Results are reported based upon interviews conducted on the seven days up to and including the night before posting.

For the seven days ending December 2, 2007 show that Rudy Giuliani earns 23% of the vote while Mike Huckabee has jumped to 15% for the week. Fred Thompson, Mitt Romney, and John McCain each attract 13%. Ron Paul's support for the week is at 6%, Tom Tancredo and Duncan Hunter are both at 1% and 16% are undecided (review history of weekly results).

Reading the above I can only note that if the religious wing of the GOP gels behind Huckabee, then it may well be Huckabee and Giuliani. Romeny still leads in New Hampshire - but then it's onto SC and Super Tuesday.

Is America really ready to elect a Southern Baptist Preacher as its President?

Get your facts straight on FairTax!
The FairTax will help poor people.

Every family(legal U.S. citizen that is) will get a monthly prebate to cover the increased cost on basic goods and services up to the poverty line due to the sales tax. However, prices on most products will remain the same due to a removal of corporate income taxes.

SteveL - you don't know what you are talking about. The FairTax does not apply to used goods and services. Also, what good is a mortgage deduction if you don't have ANY INCOME TAX!????

For Steve L
Steve,
Thank you for your reply comment to my comment on the Fair Tax. I would like to correct some of your misunderstandings about it.

The Fair Tax will be collected by state sales tax authorities, whose infrastructure is already in place in 45 states.

Absence of reporting and recordkeeping is one of the beauties of this tax. The tax is reported and collected by retail sellers at point of purchase. April 15 becomes just another spring day with no forms to complete.

There is no reporting of tax on your yard or garage sale example because the Fair Tax does not tax used property.

Absence of evasion is another beauty of this tax. As the tax becomes simpler and more transparent, and as collection points drop from 155 million to 20 million, compliance rises dramatically. Crime figures start to pay tax.

European nations have both VAT's and corporate income taxes. For the most part this is a bad thing. Corporate income taxes are passed on to the poor (as are VAT's) in the form of higher retail sales prices. (I know. I lived in Germany for six years!) Higher retail sales prices punish the poor. Corporate taxes, furthermore, punish corporate productivity, thrift and effort. Finally, VAT's require more points of collection than retail sales taxes such as the Fair Tax.

Your comment about deductions reminds me of the story of the woman who went into her neighborhood bakery. Her baker gave her a loaf of bread for free, and she complained to him that he did not give her his usual 20% discount. The Fair Tax does not play winners against losers.

I hope these comments have been helpful. If you have any further questions or comments feel free to e-mail me at james@jamesbennett.com or go to the fairtax.com website.

~Jim Bennett

FairTax will fix Illegal Immigration!
How will the illegal immigrants survive when they don't get the monthly prebate?

My guess is they will go back home on their own, without "rounding them up", as some. By all means secure the border for security reasons, but if an illegal immigrant actually can survive here and support our country by paying into the national sales tax without getting the monthly prebate, I am not going to be the one showing him the door.

This is NEVER MENTIONED about the FairTax and it should be.

Dear Steve
Steve writes:

"The Fair Tax is UNMANAGEABLE and UNENFORCEABLE, do you realize that?

How is the Federal Government going to collect the tax?

Every time my neighbor down the street has a yard sale, he's going to pay tax on the sale of his items? To whom? When?"

Steve, as others here have said, how about reading the bill before you run your mouth about it? You have obviously not read it because you make outright false statements regarding a couple of the most basic characteristics of the plan.

First, the Fed will not be collecting the tax. The states will collect the tax...just like almost all of them already do with their state sales taxes. In turn, the Fed will pay the states a percentage as payment for collecting it.

Second, only NEW goods are taxed. So your neighbor with the garage sale wont have to worry about collecting taxes.

You can redeem yourself by reading HR 25 and the Fair Tax book by Representative Linder and Neal Boortz.

Arkansas
No paticular offense to conservative people in Arkanas but ever since that state produced the Clinton Plague I have trusted nothing to come out it since. As a matter of fact I have boycotted all products that are made or assembled in Arkansas. Huckabee to me is no different, republican or not, trust no one from that state. My worst nightmare is to be forced to choose between him or billary both being from their, I wouldnt vote.

Hypocrite Mike
Look, his stance that illegal alien children, (calls them children, but 18 years old plus)
should get AMERICAN tax payer funds for scholarships is unreasonable.

Huckabilly's reasoning for this is that we "should not punish the children for the crimes and sins of their parents."

I have arrested may "parents" who commit crimes and are sent to jail. Sent away from their children who are placed in foster homes. The children suffer the embarrassment, the loss of pets, the loss of their own room, sometimes separation from other siblings, all because the childs parent made a mistake or carried out a crime.

Parents actions do punish the children! In this case, illegally coming into this country.

Don't be fool by another McCain, Kennedy, Lindsey Grahamm, GWB amnesty loving RINO.

Lambro the liberal
Lambro says:

"But last week Huckabee labeled the respected tax-cutting group "The Club for Greed," a charge that sounded more like the invective spewed forth from Al Gore, Howard Dean or socialist Bernie Sanders."

But on the other hand, Lambro doesn't like the "so-called fair tax" because "such a tax would be a disaster for this country, especially for low- and middle-income Americans who spend a disproportionate portion of their earnings -- in many cases all of it -- on the necessities of life."

Translation: The fair tax is what the liberals call a "regressive tax", (because it is fair)which is why liberals, like apparently, Donald Lambro, don't like it (Even though the necessities would not be taxed under Huckabee's plan)!

lots of misgivings...
with the Huckster. First and foremost, he's never met a government program he didn't want to fund. He has a reputation as a tax-and-spender that's anything but fiscally conservative.

http://www.taxhikemike.org

The second big red flag is his stance on immigration. The Huckster seems to want to continue "compassionate conservatism" into the immigration realm, a recipe for amnesty.

About the FairTax, I've heard about it for years. It seems like an improvement to the status quo, but I'm *much* more interested in cutting spending first or implementation of a flat tax. I'd like to know where the Huckster would cut. Any specific plans? Without spending cuts, the fed government will be just as big and wasteful as it is now.

The biggest plus about the FairTax to me is that it simplifies my life of filling out endless IRS paperwork... but if I have to read an entire book to get all the benefits out of it, that smacks of something that's not as simple as advertised.

Along the lines of the FairTax, realizing the Huckster's record as governor, how long before We the People are saddled with a national sales tax *and* a reinstituted income tax? That idea scares me more than anything.

Hey Al, about the Book
Hey Al, the book took me about an hour to read and was a bargain at $3.99 at Borders for a hardcover edition. I honestly think it could only take about 10 pages to describe the basics, 20 in lawyer speak. Most of the book talks about its benefits and the genius of its simplicity.
You are correct, it is not meant to be a tax deduction. It is meant to fund the government at its current level. If you cut spending, you could cut the Sales rate.
And you would absolutely have to watch out that they don't pass a national sales tax and then reinstitute an income tax. It is meant as a total replacement for all Corporate and Individual income taxes.

Huckabee and the border
On his campaign website:

"I support the $3 billion the Senate has voted for border security. This money will train and deploy 23,000 more agents, add four drone planes, build 700 miles of fence and 300 miles of vehicle barriers, and put up 105 radar and camera towers. This money will turn "catch and release" into "catch and detain" of those entering illegally, and crack down on those who overstay their visas."

Huckabee and kids of illegals
I took his stance on the tuition situation to be one of encouraging assimilation: he wanted to give the children of illegal aliens an incentive to work for citizenship. And I think that's what he's thinking is the solution to the present problem: Secure the borders, then assimilate those already among us.

On a side note, kudos to Tancredo for being the only candidate to actually talk about assimilation in the last debate.

Wouldn't it be nice....
If just one of these "columnists" (and pretty near every nay-sayer) on the FairTax would actually know the details of the plan before they pooh-pooh it?

Lambro writes that: "...such a tax would be a disaster for this country, especially for low- and middle-income Americans who spend a disproportionate portion of their earnings -- in many cases all of it -- on the necessities of life."

Hello!! Those people would PAY NO SALES TAXES for those necessities of life since there is a provision in the plan to prebate the cost of taxes. This comment alone tells me Lambro hasn't a clue about the details of the FairTax.

Here's a bit of advice for Mr. Lambro. Better to be silent and thought a fool than to speak and be known one. I don't think we know for sure who said that first, but I find it more and more true with each passing day.

I welcome those who have a real issue with the FairTax. Let's hear it and talk it out. And I mean a real problem, not some problem that isn't really a problem, e.g. "The FairTax won't cut spending." Well dunce, a) You just broadcast that you haven't a clue about the FairTax because b)the plan isn't designed to cut spending! Would you used a lawnmower to paint your house and then complain that it did a crappy job? Sadly for some the answer would be yes.

Just don't make up stories or try to change the FairTax plan so that it creates a problem that isn't really there.

I swear ANYTHING is better than the IRS with all the rules, regulations and intrusion into our personal lives. I believe that the FairTax is the best anything I've seen so far.

thanks, Dave Nate...
only an hour? That I could spare. I still have a few reservations, but maybe after reading the book, those will be assuaged.

I used to listen to Boortz frequently. He's responsible for a substantial portion of the excitement generated for this idea, but I'm a little disappointed in him. He's railed against out of control spending as long as I've heard him, and I'd prefer he focus his efforts more on curtailing spending than on shifting the tax burden from income to consumption.

As you might imagine, my ideal tax code would be what Ron Paul has proposed: a flat tax at 0%, where federal spending is cut back to constitutional levels and the feds make all their revenue in tariffs and excise taxes. Paul stands for everything fiscal conservatives have been dreaming about for decades... including ending the IRS which he's proposed publicly and without trepidation. Boortz should be on board with Paul 100% based on everything he's said as a talk show host... but alas, I think he's sold out a bit, since the FairTax has become his baby.

All that said, I'll read more into the FairTax... and I do believe the FairTax would be an improvement over the status quo, but not the best plan out there.

the fairtax prebate
Everyone's prebate is based on his family size. The Dept of Health & Human Services calculates what people pay for essential goods and services, and charts it out according to family size. The prebate check is equal to the estimated amount of tax that would be paid on those essential goods and services for any particular family size. A Parent with one child would receive approximately $262 a month, while a couple with three children would receive about $591 a month. The families would get the check at the beginning of each month, which they would use to offset the taxes they pay when they purchase items. If they only spend up to their respective "poverty line" amount, then they essentially pay no taxes.

The chart is here: http://www.fairtax.org/site/PageServer?pagename=about_faq_ answers#3

Hey guys
Check out Lowery's hatchett job on the Fair Tax. I don't think there is one thing in there that is factual other than him citing Bartlett as someone who is against it!

Another hit job
Did you do any research on this before you decided to write? Michael Medved did. He found that during the time Mike Huckabee was Governor was Governor of Arkansas - 11 plus years - state income tax remain the same. The overall tax burden (state and local taxes) was rated at 37 out of 50 when he took office and sank to 44th at the end of his 2nd term. An percentage of more than 1%. He did raise the sales tax on gasoline about .01. But he improved roads and schools. Good roads are necessary if you want business to thrive. You cannot attract new investment if roads and schools are allowed to languish. He cut taxes 94 times.

I would rather have a man in office who will use his judgement regarding tax dollars to cut taxes as much as possible, raise taxes only when all other options have been considered, and spend money as if it were coming out of his own pocket.

Oh, yes, taxes went up during the 4 years Romney was in office in Massachusetts. That's Mike's 11 years against Romney's 4.

Boortz and Ron Paul
Not to get this off topic, but I believe Boortz disagrees with Paul on the war issue and it seems that Boortz puts more weight on that topic than how to fund government.

The only thing I can remember Boortz saying about the tax plan proposed by Paul is that it's idealistic, however impossible to put into practice as an immediate solution. I can't think Boortz would have an issue with going back to the original way the Feds were funded, it's simply that as nice as it would be, you can't just turn off the spigot all at once and expect this nation to continue to function. We got this way a bit at a time, let's get back to where we need to be the same way.

taxes and Huckabee
By all means lets not raise taxes. What the heck $15 trillion debt isn't far off. We can go cruising down the river to self destruction one way or the other. Our money is becoming more worthless by the day. China owns us and countries that hold dollars are looking to dump US dollars for other more stable currency. Pick one... US dollar is 88¢ to the Australian dollar,. The british pound is worth 2 US$. The Euro is worth $1.50 We'll can keep Keep sliding like this until some body gets the budget under control and with a recession around the corner, the economy isn't going to bail us out. Its going to take old fashioned paying for what we spend. Like it or NOT

chicaree - about another idea?
How about we cut freaking spending? There's a concept that's yet to be tried.

I pretty sure that simple math will prove that if we don't spend the money we won't have the debt we have now.

What's wrong with THAT idea?

Translating State to Federal
Is it fair to assume that what a candidate would do at a state level is what they would do at a Federal level? I personally feel most decisions should be done at the state level and not at the federal level to begin with. At least if your state is totally screwed up you can move to a different state. I can't realistically move out of my country which is getting totally screwed up.

FairTax is Federalism
This tax reform proposal would take massive amounts of power out of the hands of the Federal Government. It would eliminate the FedGov's ability to control our decisions through tax breaks/penalties and the like. It would eliminate the need for businesses to hire lobbyists to make sure the businesses get whatever tax breaks/credits that can be bribed out of congress. The IRS would be abolished, and the primary responsibiliy for collecting the tax would be states and retailers, who would receive a collection fee. We would no longer suffer the massive invasion of privacy that the current tax code is.

Sins of the Father
Mike Huckabee wants to give college tuition to illegal aliens because they shouldn't be punished for the sins of their fathers.
Well Mike, these illegals aren't Americans and there should be preferential treatment of AMERICANS over illegals. Don't be an Esau and sell out the birthright of Americans to those who come here illegally and expect us to hand over everything to them.

Yes to Ron Paul. NO to all the rest.

jackbenimble

Your post equating Huckabee (unflatteringly) with George Bush is valid but even though you are critical of George Bush you are still to easy on him.

"I think George Bush has only done about three things right: he has advanced the goals of social conservatism with good judges, he has been firm in the war on terror and he pushed through some good tax cuts."

1). As to Supreme Court appointments, yes Bush appointed good people but that was a combination of blind luck and the fact that conservatives rose up. We could have wound up with Harriet Miers and Alberto Gonzales on the Supreme Court.

2). Tax cuts are phony unless accompanied by spending cuts. If you are a spender you are a taxer. Bush is no exception. Bush raised taxes in the form of inflation and debt to be handed off to the next generation of Americans. The Bush approach to tax cuts is like someone who claims to be energy efficient because he burns the furniture instead of running the furnace.

Huckabeeheehawwww!
I like Baptists and Baptist candidates, but I am not crazy about the idea of having a Baptist preacher for President. I like Catholics and Catholic candidates, but I wouldn't be eager to elect a Catholic priest as President. I like for my President to be a believer, but I don't want him to be a minister. Ministers already get a bit full of themselves; give them a country to run and they are insufferable.

By the way, I didn't like Pastor Huckabee's pious arrogance in the recent debate when the scary Bible-thumper (who seemed like he would've been well-suited as a judge in the seventeenth century Salem witch trials) examined the candidates with, "Do YOU beLIEVE in EVery WORD of THIS BOOK?" The question first went to Giuliani, who gave a thoughtful, sincere, intelligent response to the question, but not before Pastor Huckabeeheehaw interrupted with an ever-so-magnanimous offer to help him out with the answer. The pastor's followers slapped their knees and nearly swallowed their chaw over that one!

I didn't find it amusing. The self-righteous pastor acted as though he owned the copyright on the Good Book. I could not stand four years of his sanctimony anymore than I could stand the fake I-feel-your-pain routine of the last overrated hick from Arkansas.

Lambro Didn't Even Look at the Fair Tax
From the FAQ at http://www.fairtax.org/site/PageServer?pagename=about_faq_ answers#13

How does the FairTax protect low-income and lower-middle-income families and individuals?

Under the FairTax Plan, poor people pay no net FairTax at all up to the poverty level! Every household receives a rebate that is equal to the FairTax paid on essential goods and services, and wage earners are no longer subject to the most regressive and burdensome tax of all, the payroll tax. Those spending at twice the poverty level pay a tax of only 11.5 percent -- a rate much lower than the income and payroll tax burden they bear today.

Under the federal income tax, slow economic growth and recessions have a disproportionately adverse impact on lower-income families. Breadwinners in these families are more likely to lose their jobs, are less likely to have the resources to weather bad economic times, and are more in need of the initial employment opportunities that a dynamic, growing economy provides. Retaining the present tax system makes economic progress needlessly slow, thus harming low-income people the most.

In contrast, the FairTax dramatically improves economic growth and wage rates for all, but especially for lower-income families and individuals. In addition to receiving the monthly FairTax prebate, these taxpayers are freed from regressive payroll taxes, the federal income tax, and the compliance burdens associated with each. They pay no more business taxes hidden in the price of goods and services, and used goods are tax free.

sir aslan writes:
"CFR ENDORSES HUCKABEE?????? "

Now this is interesting. This has been the case for the last 20+ years, dating back to Reagan. Can we ever get a candidate dem or repub, who isn't tied to the CFR think tank?

There's one....Ron Paul.

Another reason to vote for Ron Paul

Huckabee surging!
NATIONAL POLLING (12/3/07):

Giuliani: 20%
Huckabee: 17%
Thompson: 14%
McCain: 13%
Romney: 11%

That's the latest from Rasmussen.

He is a conservative, folks. Check out http://wwww.mikehuckabee.com and look under "issues" to see his stances on illegal immigration.

What say we
But several copies of the FairTax Book, and the one due out February, and send them to the columnists at TH. Then maybe we could get some REAL dialogue going. It's hard knowing what the bill entails and hard to have to read drivel that continually spurns it. What's wrong with a tax law that is 133 pages long, and rids us ot the socialistic income tax and the Infernal Revenue Service?

M7...
Re: your post at 5:12 PM...

I think you're absolutely right about Boortz. Unfortunately, Boortz is extremely uninformed about all matters foreign policy (I've even called into his show to disagree with him, and he graciously accepted my opinions). Boortz is a bit of an overly simplistic fear-monger who buys all the neocon propaganda - all of his foreign policy citations are from the same opinion written by different people (Goldberg, Coulter, Malkin, Charen, Mowbray, etc. etc.). Interestingly enough, he preaches the Founders frequently, but has forgotten everything they said about trading liberty for security, foreign intervention, and undeclared wars.

About taxes, I think the only way to cut the tax rate to what Boortz and many other self-professed conservatives want is precisely to cut most of the spending cold turkey. If you try it incrementally, no one want want to give up *their* government benefit *first*, so it'll just be more haggling. If you cut the flow off all at once, people will realize how much better things are by keeping more money and purchasing goods and services from the free market.

Dave Nate wrote that things are much better run at the state level, and I agree 100%. The people are much closer to state legislators than federal ones. State legislators will be held to greater account than feds. Plus, as Dave pointed out, you can much more easily leave a state that's a mess than a nation that's a mess.

Look at his record
Not what his site says. Not what he just says!! Go check news papers from Arkansas during the time he was in office!!
Look at Michelle Malkin. She has videos of him posted on Hot Air. Also another video in her previous posts of November 26 2007.
The man is Not a conservative!! The MSM wants him to win the nomination, that's why they are pushing him. They know all this stuff can be brought up and cause him to lose. Believe me, there is a lot of dirt, FOR REAL dirt, that can be brought up against this man.

Go Huck!
With the surge in anti-Huck articles, where have all the anti-Giuliani articles been all this time?

The answer is they haven't. Townhall's columnists are by-and-large the party's elitists. Unable to find anything, they lambaste Huckabee on illegal immigration about tuition for children, deliberately ignoring his position that calls for securing the border and deporting illegal adults, and pretending as if he doesn't support this by focusing one point of a larger platform.

Unfortunately for these columnist elitists, the first guy to graduate from high school in his family, Mike Huckabee - a guy who grew up poor and paid his own way through college, who balanced Arkansas' budget, who supports the Fair Tax (a conservative's wet dream not that you'd suspect it's a conservative idea with Townhall columnists), stridently supported the 2nd amendment, has been pro-marriage and pro-life, fundamentally scares our elitists.

The party's elitists would sell us out to Rudy. George Will has lectured that social conservatives need to "grow up" and not vote their values, without answering why anyone should vote for them if not for their values. They would even go so far as to claim a vote for Huck is a vote for Rudy, despite Huck's second place standing in national polls. Look at Rasmussen:

Giuliani: 20%
Huckabee: 17%
Thompson: 14%
McCain: 13%
Romney: 11%

Huckabee leads Iowa. He's a point behind Giuliani and McCain in New Hampshire, and can easily place second there. He's coming up strong in South Carolina on Romney and Thompson, and is in second in Florida.

Huckabee can win. The Republican party's elites aren't owed our votes. Vote for the man who you believe is the best candidate. In my estimation, that's Mike Huckabee.

RE: Huckabee and Taxes
I don't know whether Huckabee would be the best next President or not, but I do know something about federal taxes. My profession requires me to work with people every day all day helping them with tax related problems. Mr. Lambro, I believe that your representations of the "fair tax" and the "income tax", as well as of Governor Huckabee's record in Arkansas is lamentably skewed. Something desperately needs to be done about the current income tax debacle, and just passing another overhaul of the current disastrous system won't do it. Congress and administrations have "reformed" that mess countless times over the years, and it is still a mess. I appreciate Huckabee's willingness to stick his neck out on this even though some people with vested political interests don't like it.

Huckabee just uses the Fair Tax
To cover his horrible record on taxes.

The truth is it will take more than 8 years for the Fair Tax to be enacted.

Meanwhile, the tax payer will have to pay for Huckabee's "compassion.

Read before you write
It's amazing how many people write about the FairTax before they read about it. Lambro is obviously unaware of the prebate in the FairTax. Retail prices won't go down - they current embedded 22% (on average) tax will just be replaced with a 23% embedded tax. Prices will stay close to what they are before the FairTax takes effect. Because the FairTax is fair and collected at the point of sale of all retail goods, it will reduce the underground economy, not increase it. The FairTax would eliminate all their current tax compliance expenses of all businesses, helping small business owners disproportionately.

I bet Lambro is as poorly informed on every topic he writes as he is on the FairTax. No wonder I rarely read him.

Gossip
This old thing again? You take a video clip from back in the '90s before Mike Huckabee lost 100 pounds and you take it out of context. It's been dealt with and most people have moved on.

*sigh* Since you didn't get the first, second, or third time I'll make it simple.

In Arkansas, they have to balance the budget. The Democrat Congress didn't like any of Huck's proposals to cut spending to balance the budget and they were down to the wire in gridlock. He went to them to appeal to them in person. In desperation, he started going through their proposals to balance the budget. He said if this is your suggestion ok, let's do it, I'll sign it if this is really what you want to put on your constituents. (translated - you want to cut your own throats - here's the knife).

Stoic Patriot

Huckabee is a water boy for the ruling class just like Giuliani.

They once bet on McCain until he fizzled out.

Now Giuliani's their guy.

If Giuliani loses steam and Huckabee takes his place as the front runner, they will be very happy to back him.

They just don't like to be too quick to jump from one horse to another until it's clear which way the wind is blowing.

You won't see them siding with Romney or Thompson, however. They can't count on Thompson, particularly considering he proposed an excellent immigration plan. And Romney has enough money they can't buy him.

But the other 3 first tier candidates are all wonderful choices as far as the ruling elite go.

Huckabee is Amnesty Friendly
When Huckabee says no amnesty, he means it the same way GWB does when he says no amnesty. McCain did not work out, now Rudy's flaming out, so they'll try to sell us Huckabee. The money people in the GOP are all open borders cheap labor importers. The front runners are all beholden to them. Vote accordingly.

If you wish to keep your country.

The Fairtax Plan
The author of this piece has apparently never actually read or understood the Fairtax plan, as it issues a prebate monthly which would equal any tax on the "necessities of life" and would thus not hamper the financial wellbeing of the poor and middle class.

Indeed, as the embedded taxes currently in the price of goods were weeded out, items would end up costing less, and thus the WalMart effect would benefit the poor disproportionately.

Writing for publication is dangerous. One must actually study a proposition before decrying it. Otherwise one looks like simply a big-mouthed ignoramus.

--SailFree

Read the "Fair Tax"
All of the negative comments about the Fair Tax are ignorant of what it actually is. I recall the post above about "taxing yard sales." Uhm, that wouldn't be taxed and you would know that if you actually read the book or researched HR 25. If I may please ask, read the book and be knowledgable about something before you make blanket comments. Otherwise, you are little more than an emotional liberal!

Movado

What horrible journalism
Not only is the fair tax totally distored, but Huckabee's rather sound address of the video clip that is discussed is not mentioned.

To find out some more about the fair tax and how it actually will work very well, to see how Huckabee actually feels about illegal immigration and how he feels about raising or lowering taxes I would suggest people go to http://www.trusthuckabee.com/site/c.jpIRKUOwFqG/b.3587571/ and watch the interview Glenn Beck had with him. Don't trust what other people say about what he will do and how he feels and what the fair tax is, get it from the horse's mouth.

Not everybody loves Mike Huckabee
The more I learn about Mike Huckabee, the more
he seems like the Dennis Kucinich of the GOP.
His off-the-wall proposals to enact a national
smoking ban and fully embrace the hard left
environment positions should ring alarm bells.
(Memo to Evangelicals: the Bible says you're
supposed to save PEOPLE, not the Earth. God is
going to burn this one up and give you a new one.
The Apostle Paul also warns that those who preach
a false gospel are headed for "eternal warming"
so to speak)
For this joker to be top-tier in Iowa, they

"Governor Huckabee clearly possesses the courage to act upon his convictions," said Grover Norquist, President of ATR. In the meantime, state government will cut spending. State government officials across the nation should take note of Governor Huckabee's example of how to handle a spending shortfall."

I am the only one that sees it?
Jimmy Carter is back in the form of Mike Huckabee. Both good and devote Christians (always a plus), both really crappy at economics (always a pretty bad sign). Yeah, the "Flat Tax" sounds nice, but you've got a Democratic Congress (and it didn't go anywhere when the Republicans had Congress and the White House), so let's get real and talk about some serious issues, not just sound bytes to dazzle the voter base. If Huckabee is looking for some good economic policy he may want to sit in on one of Romney's speeches.
Also, seriously, can we move past the, "God wants Mike Huckabee to be President" nonsense? If we voted based on religion, who would have won in 1980? Reagan or Carter? I am glad the country looked past Carter's good qualities in order to see Reagan's outstanding qualities.
I am sure Gov. Huckabee would be a fine neighbor and caring pastor, but I am looking for a President.

No more platitudes
I cannot STAND his pious Baptist-preacher style of speaking...gag me.

And after pondering the merits (or faults) of the Fair Tax, I can only see trouble if it were enacted. What reason would there be to forgo an all-encompassing AMNESTY for illegals with such a tax? After all, they'd be paying their "fair share."

Sick. America needs a DOCTOR...Ron Paul.

fair tax
I am no longer sure if I support the fair tax,
but anything (or anyone) donald lambro is against has to have some merit..

Re Lambro:
a loser like Donald Lambro has to write ideological tripe for the Sun Myung Moon (guy who thinks he's the "messiah") mooney owned washington times to scrounge out a dishonest penurious existence shilling for the atheistic ayn rand worshipping front group the materialist "club for greed".

who's your daddy, Donald?

Huckabee may fool you.
"Also, seriously, can we move past the, "God wants Mike Huckabee to be President" nonsense? "
----------------------------------------

Ahem, that's what GW Bush said. Exact quote:
"I think God wants me to be president, but if not, what the heck..."

And "W" eventually won two presidential elections after losing every single debate and despite serial gaffes and continual bumbling.

Campaign Tax Issue promises...
Regarding the Tax Issue: Please go to each of the candidates’ websites and read each of their proposals for what they think would be a "fairer, simpler" tax code.

How long have we all heard from presidential wannabee's about the need for "tax reform"?

How many times have we heard the same old Barbara Streisand (i.e. B.S.) rhetoric about "fairer and simpler" regarding this issue? Romney specifically names the “middle class” as needing a break. Obama specifies help for “the poor”. Hillary simply wants to uncap and raise taxes on the filthy achievers in our society (i.e., the rich). None ever advocates a blanket uniform proposal that’s fair for everyone. Besides, once they are elected you never hear another peep out of them on the subject!

Now go to Huckabee's website and note the link to an actual bill at Thomas.gov, The FairTax bill, HR25. Also note that there are over FIVE DOZEN congressional co-sponsors HR-25, the same bill advocated by Gov. Huckabee.

While the other candidates merely provide is with feel-good platitudes after spending a couple hours of googling previous candidates' tax proposals and using cut-n-paste to give us what they think the voters want to hear, Huckabee is simply endorsing an existing proposal that has been well researched by experts that are NOT beltway insiders.

The FairTax is a REAL Bill in congress. It is not just some political B.S. hurled at us by a presidential wannabee's so they can fill a 30 second sound bite.

Lambro on the FairTax
Mr. Lambro,
I am surprised that the Political Director for the Washington Times is not better informed about the true provisions of the FairTax which will lower virtually everyones' taxes since it broadens the tax base to include so many people who avoid paying taxes now (underground cash economy, drug dealers, illegal immigrants, etc). Your comments seem to indicate that you are not very familiar with HR 25. Please tell your readers straight up: Have you ever read The FairTax Book by Congressman John Linder & Neal Boortz? Have you ever thoroughly studied the proposal at http://www.FairTax.org? Have you ever read HR 25 which reduces our tax code from 60,000+ pages to 135 pages? Please answer these questions and tell us if you are dismissing the FairTax because you think you know how all consumption tax program work. If not, write us again when you understand the bill!
