Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WASHINGTON -- The Democrats, flush from their 2006 election gains, took over Congress in January, promising to end the legislative stalemate and pass a sweeping agenda for reform.

Nearly six months later, they have backpedaled on their promises of reform; they've made little progress on major legislation; their job-approval ratings have taken a nosedive; and there's talk for the first time that House Democrats could lose seats to the Republicans in 2008.

They came into power pledging to curb wasteful pork projects that had hit a record $23 billion in 2006. Then they passed a budget resolution that would increase nondefense discretionary spending by $23 billion more than President Bush proposed. A coincidence?

"Taxpayers -- and even lawmakers -- want to know how much of this new spending will go toward pork projects. But House Appropriations Committee Chairman David Obey (of Wisconsin) has reversed earlier transparency pledges by vowing to keep all House pork projects secret until the appropriations bills have passed the House," complains budget watchdog Brian Riedl at the Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C.

In a memo circulated on Capitol Hill last week, Riedl said that, contrary to the Democrats' promises to end "earmarking" of line-item requests for pork projects back home, the practice continues at full throttle.

"Obey claims to have received 32,000 earmark requests, an average of 74 from each of the 435 House members," Riedl said.

Last week, as the pork battle grew hotter, House Minority Leader John Boehner of Ohio accused Obey and the Democrats of creating a "slush fund for secret earmarks," charging that "the interest of the American people is being subverted."

Pork was a major issue that contributed to the GOP's losses last year, but Boehner has put his party back on the side of the pork busters and the fight for fiscal discipline. Through most of last week, he and his ground troops kept up a steady drumbeat of press releases, statements and floor speeches that threw the Democrats on the defensive and gained a proposed deal to open up the earmarks to more scrutiny and legislative challenges.

Whatever happens next, the Republicans are back on the right fiscal message that will be one of the GOP's campaign themes in next year's elections: The Democrats' addiction to big-government spending.

While Democrats were feeling the heat in the House on spending, very little else was getting done in either chamber in terms of legislative reforms.

That's because Democrats were devoting much of their time to a seemingly endless series of politically motivated hearings -- inquisition is a more accurate term -- to bring down the Bush administration.

In the House, the Democrats' Grand Inquisitor is Rep. Henry Waxman of California, the zealously partisan chairman of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee. Waxman's political mandate from Speaker Nancy Pelosi: Go after every administration official you can, on any pretext you can, to build a list of election-year accusations that can help our party in 2008.

Last week, Waxman was grilling Lurita Alexis Doan, the head of the General Services Administration, who triggered a Hatch Act investigation by asking political appointees at a briefing in January how they could "help our candidates." Her record as a waste fighter in the government-building agency that has saved taxpayers money was irrelevant to Waxman, who focused on an inadvertent remark, a harmless mistake.

But to Waxman, who looked the other way during a reign of scandals in the Clinton administration, this was a firing offense. "I would urge you to resign," he told her last week at a hearing where Doan said she had never sought any "personal or partisan political gain" at GSA.

Meantime, Democrats on the House and Senate judiciary committees were pursuing a political inquisition of their own to find out why the White House dismissed eight U.S. attorneys at the end of their terms -- which the president has every right to do.

Subpoenas have been issued to require the testimony of two of Bush's former aides, former White House counsel Harriet Miers and former White House political director Sara Taylor. Unable to drive Attorney General Alberto Gonzales from office, since no one has proved he did anything unethical or illegal, Democrats are now going after Bush's closest aides, who have not been accused of any wrongdoing, either.

Is this what voters wanted Democrats to do when they put them back in power? The Democrats' sinking job-approval polls, lower than Bush's scores, suggest otherwise. And they may be hearing from those voters next year.

Last week, elections tracker Stu Rothenberg told his newsletter clients that Republican campaign strategists now "have about half a dozen seats they know the party should never have lost ... and eight of the nine most vulnerable House seats currently are held by Democrats.

"While it is now safe to say that Democrats will retain the House next year, small gains for either party are possible," he said.

How do you keep
a straight face? Pork went up over ONE-THOUSAND PERCENT under the GOP. Get real. You didn't say squat then, when your voice might have counted and helped reign in that huge pork expansion. So maybe it's best if you don't get involved in this fight.

Dems pushing DEATH legislation
Dems have presented various DEATH legislations

(notably on pushing embryonic stem cell research---this they also do AGAINST the evidence of adult or blood cord stem cell SUCCESSES)

or have not wanted to support legislation to protect the minor girl brought to an abortion clinic by a non parental or non custodial adult (i.e. the minor girl can still be brought to have the child destroyed by the adult abuser).

So they are FAITHFUL to carry out some kind of mission to use and abuse the next generations...

Sorry Steve
The Republicans left us some time ago when it comes to Government spending, one of the reasons I left the Party after 40 years. Bush is a back hole and the Republicans are a PC Party spenting us into chapter 11 ...the Democrats are horrible beyond our worst nightmares...time for a third Party...and please there is no Republican Party to take back,it is done...toast...finished...

dims and reform
My friends on the left have castigated my conserv views for years. When I agreed that the repubs betrayed the voters trust and deserved to loose elections they acted as though I converted to their side. I pointed out that the dims would mis-read the results and would make similar mistakes. I was assured by these same insightful dims that Pelosi and Reid would not misread the results and would quarantee the same excesses would not occur from their side of the aisle and that these two new leaders would make congress accountable to the electorate and in fact would through their honest administratiopn of congress kill off the rebubs as a party. Guess what, the names on the doors changed but the habits of a career in Washington never change. The great legislation has never been enacted and the dims are wasting our money at record levels and all attempts at the new transparancy we were promised has been forgotten and overlooked. Congress continues to prove un-trustworthy and the country suffers as a result. What the dims however will deliver on is higher taxes in their never ending quest to impliment socialism. When they get thrown out of office for their excesses and betryal of the public who will they blame. Placing trust in a corrupt congress should worry us all about our future

Amygirl,
Excellent suggestion, we do have to make them earn our trust again. They all take too much for granted and they are moving dangerously away from all the principals that make this country great. I hope we do get their attention and soon.

Amygirl
You are right on target, and here is a plan that will actually work! Let's DENY THE ELITES OF BOTH PARTIES THAT WHICH THEY DESIRE THE MOST, THE PRESIDENCY.

I know it will take a leap of faith and some guts to something we haven't done before, but we should have learned by now that doing the same thing over and over will never produce a different result. The Dem/GOP/MSM propaganda machines have pefected the technique of telling a lie often enough so that it becomes believed and accepted. The lie is that only they can govern, only they are smart enough and wise enough. We need to disabuse them of this notion.

Because of this concept, the elites no longer fear being held accountable, and arrogantly pursue their own agenda. The current amnesty scam is an excellent example. If we elect another Dem/GOP president in 2008, we will guarantee a future for our great nation and our children of more big government, less personal freedom, and greater influence to the internationalists who hate America.

I urge you to visit my website,
JOEOLIVAFORPRESIDENT.ORG.
In it, I openly proclaim a Campaign Platform that clearly shows how we can restore the Constitution, rule of law, and will of the people as the true principles by which we govern ourselves as a free people.

Our birthright has been cleverly stolen from us, and we were tricked by the entitlements and pork barrel projects we are constantly given. In effect, the elites have told us to go home, send in our tax dollars, and leave the country in their most capable hands. Sad to say, that is exactly what we have done. We have been conditioned to believe the myth that there is no other choice, nowhere else to go, but that is not true!

Why should we trust these same individuals again? How have they earned any trust at all? We need to exercise our responsibility and reclaim the inheritance we were given by the founding fathers! Why not do the unthinkable, that which they never suspect we would do? What is there to lose, they have already stolen our birthright. Let's reclaim it! Think about it, check out my website. I guarantee you will find hope and encouragement. Thanks, Joe

Steve
No. We cannot trust any of them. I'm on a mission to convince as many voters as possible to throw them all over the side. Start by re-registering as Independents. That oughta get their attention. Then we can start writing in who we want in office and let the bums on Capitol Hill spin right out of their chairs. They make me ill.

They all need to feel the heat!
We can't be fool enough to continue this nonsense. We have allowed our elected representatives, Dems and Repubs, to game the system and now they don't even care how flagrant and phony they are in continuing the status quo. You get the feeling that even TH columnists are trying to lull us back to sleep or divert our attention.

Can we trust any of them to make the any decisions, if they make any at all?

Conservative does not equal republican
Politicians are ploliticians. It does not matter if they are black with white stripes or white with black. NO difference.

The dream of finding enough fiscally conservative, socially liberal politicians with bawls is over.

I am a fiscal conservative. Socially I don't care what you do with your live or time, just don't ask me to pay for it. This would be utopia and it cannot exist in a democracy nor the socialist system we have become. Republic? Perhaps, but only for a while. Once whiney mommas and limp-wristed politicians get involved it is over.

Pork is hear to stay on all sides unless we export the pigs to China.

beowolf is right
And the republican and conservative voters better wake up and get a brain, because we are approximately 18 months away from a Clinton/Obama/Edwards presidency and a Pelosi, Murtha, Waxman, Reid and Kennedy congress. Conventional wisdom says that we can get rid of them after 2 years,(the House, and part of the Senate), but these morons can do irrepriable damage to this country in just two short years.

As the old saying goes: "fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me".

Subversion in Congress
This Obey guy is a piece of work, isn't he? Hiding away all the pork until it's too late to amend the bill and take it out. What is this? The fricking USSR? That kind of crap has GOT TO GO! Nobody, and I mean nobody who is against transparency belongs in Congress. Get him out of there and let the sun shine in!

But the democrats promised us!
Lambro is writing because he is operating in the present where the election promises of the democrats were to cut earmarks, be the most ethical congress in history and other BS as the article informs us. It is not about the republicans misdeads but that has been hashed over endlessly resulting in their loss at the polls. SO, now for the democrats actions. Thus the article.

Like I keep saying
Republican voters have no one else to blame but themselves. All of you idiot Republicans (which appears to be growing in proportion at an exponential rate) who thought it would either be best to vote Democrat or not vote at all should look into the mirror and say aloud "This is all my fault."

One cannot solve a problem by making said problem worse. It is IRREFUTABLE that no matter how bad you may think Republicans are on this issue, Democrats are far, far, FAR worse.

Yeah, Steven's "bridge to nowhere" was ridiculous (but no less ridiculous than his threat to commit suicide if he didn't get that pork...that guy should have been tossed out of office by the Senate for being mentally incapable of holding the office after that nonsense). But that doesn't even compare with the stuff that Robert Byrd (2/3rds the state of West Virginia has monuments -- all paid for with federal tax dollars -- named after him) and Ted Kennedy (Big Dig anyone?), just to name two.

By either sitting idly by or by actively going out and voting for the Democrats, YOU have done this. Congratulations.

Had you twits the IQ of a flea, you'd have instead nominated better candidates in the primaries and gotten them elected. Instead those of you who stayed home or voted Democrats have given us what we've got. I hope you're proud.

Fooled Them
So all the stupid people who voted all these Libs into office really thought there would be something different on Capitol Hill? Stupid is as stupid does.

Back on message?
That's the problem. We don't need messages, we want action to back up the message. We have had enough. Elect those who make decisions based on right and wrong. Dems and Repubs just keep it up. This country needs to wake up. The ride is over.

Propaganda
Lambro this piece is a lot of fingerpointing bs, done as if there was little or no PB by the republicans. Further, anyone who believes PB is only a modern issue should study.

Democratz and Pork Barrel Spending
You must be joking? After Stevens and Young of Alaska and their bridge to nowhere you've got nobody to blame! Except 6 years of Republicon spending and a culture of corruption that has brought this to bear!

Dear Donald Lambro
Dumbo your little nuggets must be brass ones to point fingers, when the republicans showed in the last 6 years they are truly the kings of pork barrel spending and ear marks, bridges to no where and prairie parkway project of Dennis Hastert, the former HS couch & speaker of house who ignore mark foley's homo pedophile predator perving of congressional pages, eweee. Oh yea family values diddling young boys and buying property and giving gov money away to build highway near said property to raise the properties value, NICE! No one steals like a republican.

Until we do away with ear marks all together (Dem or GOP) the folly will continue. The party in power rapes (rape not reap) the reward. The only reason the republicans are whining and crying like babies now is because they are not in power, on the money gravy train.

The politicians in DC are not going to take it away unless the people make them. Unfortunately "the people" are often the ones in the districts getting the Gov money hand out.

Basically its legal steeling of government money. The get contributions and they give back bigger ear marks.

As long as partisan twits like Donald Lambro make it a liberal or democrat thing v. the "good guys" garbage, than the problem with persist.

The republicans are as big of crooks, cheats and liars as the dems, but the republicans are better at stealing and not getting caught. Ear marks and "pork barrel" spending is legal corruption.
