A game of chicken, with a side of pork

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WASHINGTON -- If you're wondering what happened to all that sound and fury from the Democrats over its troop-withdrawal bills, they took off for an Easter break, leaving their unfinished business behind them.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi was touring the Middle East, pretending to be Secretary of State. Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama were off in search of more campaign money to bankroll their presidential ambitions. Most of the other Democrats were back home boasting about all that pork they stuffed into the emergency defense supplemental bill that is supposed to provide money just for our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Some emergency. The differing versions will have to be reconciled in a House and Senate conference before a final vote takes place sometime after the "we're in no hurry" Democratic-run Congress gets back from its spring vacation.

U.S. military commanders in charge of the war say they will be running out of funds by the end of April at the earliest or by June at the latest. But Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid is in no rush, pointing to a dubious Congressional Research Service report that says the military doesn't need new funding until July. Tell that to the troops who know otherwise.

But the final bill that emerges from conference isn't going anywhere. It will be vetoed by President Bush, as he has warned early on, and that will mean the Democrats will have to start over with yet another emergency bill that could take weeks more.

If all this sounds like deliberate legislative stalling and foot dragging by the Democrats on funding the war and our troops, that's exactly what it is. They acknowledge they do not have the votes to cut off funds for the war, despite their majority in both houses of Congress, so they are doing the next best thing -- delay the money as long as possible.

House Ways and Means chairman Charlie Rangel shot down a funding cutoff on "Meet the Press" Sunday when Tim Russert asked him, "If you want to stop the war, why not just simply cut all funding?"

"Because you don't have the votes to do it. There's some people who believe that if you cut all the funding off, you leave our soldiers and military people exposed," Rangel replied.

He even admitted Democrats originally didn't have the votes for the bill that eventually passed in the House. Pelosi and other Democratic leaders stuffed it with $20 billion worth of pure pork "because they needed the (Democratic) votes," Rangel said.

"That bill, we lost so many Democrats because people thought we went too far and others because we didn't go far enough," he said.

So there you have it, folks, the central principle behind how Democrats intend to govern the nation's business. Pass bad legislation by loading it up with wasteful pork-barrel spending to buy enough votes from members of their own party.

But, pork-barrel bribes aside, if there was any legislation that deserved to be vetoed, this is certainly it.

It would set a specific troop-withdrawal deadline that has the terrorists in the Middle East cheering. It contains a thorny bureaucratic thicket of impossible-to-meet rules on troop training, rotation and deployment that would hamstring our military and endanger our troops on the ground.

"The terrorists have already marked (the withdrawal deadline) on their calendars," said Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.

But even the Democrats know they can go only so far in their delaying tactics before voters will turn on them for playing politics with the lives of our soldiers and they said as much this week.

"If Bush vetoes an Iraq war spending bill as promised, Congress quickly will provide the money without the withdrawal timeline the White House objects to because no lawmaker wants to play chicken with our troops," Obama told the Associated Press.

"Ultimately, politically, we have to give him (the) money," Rangel said. The White House knows it is operating from a position of strength in the current war-funding standoff. No matter how far Democrats go in pressing their antiwar efforts, they are not willing to cut off funds for the troops and the war.

When Reid this week signaled he was ready to support a much tougher war-funding cutoff bill if the timetable legislation was vetoed, the White House sent out a statement the Nevada Democrat made last Nov. 30. "We're not going to do anything to limit funding or cut off funds," he said at the time. Reid was also one of 96 senators who voted last month for language that pledged Congress would never pass legislation "to undermine the safety of the Armed Forces of the United States or impact their ability to complete their assigned or future missions."

So when the showdown is over and Bush's veto is upheld, Congress will approve the money, buying our troops and the Iraqi military more time to stabilize and strengthen Baghdad for the longer struggle ahead.

I gotta say it..........
If the Republicans had any brains at all they would run a TV ad nationally. Tomorrow.

The ad would have the attached photo of Pelosi with the scarf, and her not-so pleased "escort" viewed just behind her, touring a Moslem Mosque in Syria.

Then it would list the pork in the Bill Bush says he will veto. Following that we should be seeing pictures of street combat in Iraq.

Have the narrator ask the question "While Speaker Pelosi is touring Syria and her party wants to buy votes by spending unneeded taxpayer dollars, our soldiers are waiting for Speaker Pelosi to pass a funding Bill to buy them bullets, food and medical care.

The Democrats would be crushed by public opinion. But the Republicans are too stupid to put this together and Bush II still is seaking a "new tone" in D.C..

No wonder the Dems say he is an idiot. The Dems will never go along with a new tone in D.C. unless they write the song and the melody.

I gotta say it, too
"Pass bad legislation by loading it up with wasteful pork-barrel spending to buy enough votes from members of their own party."

Yeah, like we didn't just experience that one in the Republican Congress. Was it Jeffords or Jeffers from Alaska? Who cares.

They never had a hope
This is a perfect example of the Democrats trying to have it both ways. THey want to appease their base with the demands for a withdrawl date all the while saying, "We will give you the money because we support our troops."

How many of the Congressional nimrods will run ads during the next election talking about how they "always supported the troops?" A bunch of them, I would guess.

Typical Conservative "facts"
So instead of throwing out a non vetted dollar figure, can you explain the exact "pork?" I know after the entire Spinach crop had to be destroyed and pulled from Shelves that there was pork identified by the GOP to the tune of $25M for Spinach farmers...

Would this compare to GOP goon Young and his $200M "Bridge to Nowhere" in Alaska???

But this is yet another of the blind faith inquisitions that Cons thrive on...W pushed to CUT U.S. Military pay just months after sending us to Iraq, troops were sent poorly provisioned, Military Benefits cut, abhorent conditions at multiple VA hospitals...

And Dems don't support the troops??? Too bad none of you take the time to read the Stars & Stripes, Army Times etc. The media that is for the troops, by the troops does not support W or his minions.

BTW, since we don't have an effective Secretary of State, I am all for Pelosi taking on that role!

Enforce the Logan Act
Nancy Foolousy shows the world what a huge mental midget she is on an hourly basis. Her smoozing with her buddy in Syria not only shows a lack of common sense, she doesn't have the intelligence to be a member of Congress, much less Speaker, or Secretary of State (what a nightmare scenario that would be). She is a disgrace to the country and her gender, easily manipulated by anti-American lefties at home and evil, scheming IslamoNazis in the ME. It wouldn't surprise me to find out she's one of those indulgent Grandmothers who spoil their grandchildren all day long, undermines the parents' authority and then turns the little monsters back to Mom and Dad, who have to undo all the abhorrent behavior and bad habits the little monsters learned at Granny's house.

She meets the exact criteria for being charged with the Logan Act, which reads in part;

Any citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, with intent to influence the measures or conduct of any foreign government or of any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.

Bush and his lame justice department won't even squeak about her sedition and treason, which is bad enough at home, but now she's taken it on the road and made a fool of herself at great detriment to the country.

Since nobody else is going to scream bloody murder at this development, I will.

redstatekoolaid
you are right about Pelosi and Sec of State. I know Hammmas, Iran and Al Queda would all love to have her as Sec of State.

with the dems in power the terrorists can extract favorable surrender terms. I am sure Pelosi would unconditionally surrender to the terrorists.

Liar Liar Bridges to no where
You forgot the Pork and earmarks the GOP majority houses spend in the last 6 years, setting RECORDS for waste, fraud and excess to the tune of 100's of billions in crap.

First the GOP majority Congress / Senate passed TWO other Emergency spending bills; BOTH had major PORK. The GOP is the party of PORK, Earmarks, corruption and deficit spending!

Second this is emergency spending bill which requires appropriations for other things. I guess the GOP DOES NOT CARE ABOUT FARMERS, the salt of the EARTH.

ATTENTION all farmers and people who feed America and the world. THE GOP DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOU. DO NOT VOTE FOR THE GOP.

GOP, $24 billion in earmarks and 6,376 pet PROJECTS in ONE YEAR!!!! The GOP cares about bridges to no where.

GOP passes $286.4 billion, the biggest public work project in history, which also increased the value of land GOP members owned (Denny Hastert's Prairie Parkway) by funding and routing highway projects near their land.

WE NEED MORE NANCY'S IN THE REGIONS AND diplomatic efforts not military. We need ALL of congress, DEM and GOP to go to the region and SOLVE THE PROBLEM.

Nancy Pelosi is part of a Bi-Partisen group, including GOP members; Just a week before three GOP house members went to Syria. SO SHUT UP. We need dialog and talk. The Bubble Boy approach is not working. Syria says they are willing to make peace with Israel after Pelosi's visit.

**Donald Lambro is FOR the terrorist!**

Donald Lambro does not want the Dems to succeed. He spends his time tearing down the nation with partisan rhetoric and propaganda.

I HOPE Nancy Pelosi and the GOP members with her are successful with their diplomacy. I wish Bush was successful but that ship sailed, STRONG WILL, WISHING and HOPING Iraq turns around is like a child and Peter Pan, I wish, I wish....

IF YOU WHERE NOT PAYING ATTENTION. EVERY ONE, EVERY ONE, says military operations are no longer needed or helpful. The military operation is OVER.

The IDEA and FEAR mongering that satan himself will rise for Iraq is BULL. We can stabilize it best we can, BUT WE NEED THE WHOLE REGION TO AGREE, FOR THEIR GOOD AND OURS. We need the Dems and GOP working together, not one side (GOP) calling the other Surrender Appetizers.

WHAT ARE WE SURRENDERING? An occupation of a muslim country we don't belong in which we attacked for what turns out to weak reasons. How can we surrender something that does not belong to us? That is retarded propaganda that is for politics. SOLVE THE PROBLEM, HOW TO GET OUT BEST WE CAN AS SOON AS WE CAN. Forget a strong western democracy that is Pro America. It will never happen.

Even if we stayed 10 more years, bankrupted America, killed 100,000's more and than left, the very next day the government could fall and be taken over in a coup. READ YOUR HISTORY BOOKS FOOLS! This had been going on since 500 A.D.; Western influence in the region has always been a failure. THERE IS NOTHING redeeming about the LAND, EXCEPT THERE IS OIL UNDER IT.

With out OIL we would not be in that region. God has a sense of humor. He put the people that naturally hate us the most on top of most of the worlds oil. Lets GET OFF Foreign OIL OK? RIGHT? STOP BASHING GORE AND ENERGY SAVING.

The Cowboy, For or Against us, If you harbor terrorist you will be bombed to the stone age Saber rattling is OVER. If Bush was not lying he would attack Pakistan, which harbors terrorist and Bin Laden in probably there in the mountains. FOR SOME STRANGE REASON WE ATTACKED THE WRONG COUNTRY!!! Bush still trots out the 9/11 pony and implies there was a connection. In fact there was the opposite. Saddam was ANTI Al Qaeda.

We need to get serious with serious people in leadership. Bush is a nice man, the king of jocularity, but he is not up to the task. If he had an once of leadership he would delegate (including the Dems) and take advice, not ignore it.

Nancy Pelosi is doing her JOB! She is representing the People, which if you did not hear 70% are for a metered and organized withdrawal from Iraq. Also we will still be in Afghanistan and other parts in the region.

Why are we there NOW? I don't know, but guess it is to save the GOP party. That is immoral. I BET MY HOUSE THAT WHEN WE GET OUT WE DON'T WISH WE WHERE STILL THERE.

Donald Lambro you are the worst kind of liar, one that hurts America. Stop it, you are deceitful and hateful. You offer nothing.

This DEMS want to surrender is a lie and HURTS AMERICA! The only one using the surrender word is YOU Republicans, Neo-Cons for political reasons. Why not face it there are terrorist all over the globe and we need to be there as well. Iraq - "Mission Accomplished" - Saddam and Sons Dead, Government elected, done. Iraq has reached diminishing returns long ago.

In the next two years we should work on diplomacy and peace making in Iraq to get all three parties to agree to stop killing each other; Right now our soldiers are standing and driving around and getting shot at or IED'ed, like ducks in a shooting arcade. WE NEED TO MAKE THIS A WIN, BY GETTING OUT. LETS USE THE ROVE/GOP/NEO-CON SPIN MACHINE TO SAVE FACE. Attacking Nancy Pelosi and the Dems hurts us. Can't you see that?

Bring the troops home
And unleash them on our real enemies. A nice whiff of grapeshot in San Francisco, Beverly Hills, and Manhattan would do wonders for the nation.
