Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Two things will likely happen if the Democrats regain control of Congress Tuesday: Federal social welfare spending will go up and the core of the Republican tax cuts will be repealed.

We know this will happen because Democratic leaders have said so numerous times, in their campaign statements and in their election agenda.

Since President Bush's tax cuts were enacted in 2001, the Democrats' have been calling for their repeal, repeatedly ridiculing them as "tax cuts for the rich" when the bulk of the provisions are aimed at those in the middle class and below. "I can't see Democrats opposing the rates that are being paid at the bottom two-thirds of the tax code," said Democrat Robert Reischauer, head of the liberal Urban Institute think tank.

But Congressman Charlie Rangel of Harlem, who would become the Democratic chairman of the powerful tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee, told Bloomberg News not too long ago that he could not think of a single tax cut he would want to extend before they are due to expire by law in 2010.

An analysis by the nonpartisan Tax Foundation shows us just what is at stake for middle-income families if the tax cuts were repealed: A family of four (with two children under the age of 17), taking the standard deduction on an income of $50,000 a year pays a federal income tax bill of $1,365.

If the Bush tax cuts were never enacted, or if they were repealed, their tax bill would be $3,320. Not only does this family benefit from the lower income tax rates in Bush's cuts but also from the doubling of the child tax credit to $1,000. A family of four earning $75,000 a year presently has an income tax bill of $5,115. That bill would shoot up to $7,538 if Democrats had their way and the Bush tax cuts were never enacted.

A worried Charlie Rangel late last month, as Republican congressional candidates pounded their opponents on the tax cut issue, put out a hasty statement denying that he had any intention of raising taxes on the middle class. "Democrats have a long history of supporting targeted relief for middle-income families," he said.

Rangel said he would only "close tax shelters and eliminate benefits for companies that move jobs overseas." As for the across-the-board tax rate cuts Bush enacted, he simply dodged the question about what he would do, saying, my gosh, 2010 was "light years away from the debate before us." He hoped he would be able to provide middle-class relief, however, he told reporters.

His evasiveness, following Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi's repeated claims that Democrats would raise taxes on upper income Americans, drew suspicion from Republican tax-cutters.

"Charlie Rangel's a master politician, but when he talks about everything being on the table and tax cuts for the middle class, my eyes begin to widen," said former Rep. Jack Kemp, the architect of the Reagan tax cuts in the 1980s. "When you start targeting tax cuts to a class of people, you are entering the arena of redistribution of wealth," Kemp told me.

This is exactly what Rangel and Pelosi have in mind. The "pay-go" rules they say they will institute would require that any tax cuts be offset by spending cuts or higher taxes on someone else. Thus their plan would call for raising taxes on the higher income brackets to finance lower rates elsewhere on the income scale.

But it is unlikely that the Rangel-Pelosi Democrats will want to tamper with the lower 10 percent rate for workers in the bottom tax bracket or for those in the middle who now benefit from the Bush rate cuts. Their targets: raise the death tax, boost capital gains and dividend taxes on investors and hit upper income brackets harder.

"Democrats are for taxing the super-rich, though it has yet to be defined where super-richdom begins," says Reischauer, the former Congressional Budget Office director.

One tax hike scenario discussed in Democratic circles would push for tax hikes limited to six-figure incomes, corporate profits, investor gains and higher death taxes in exchange for an extension of Bush's other tax cuts. "They will try to find some way to raise taxes to finance their spending programs," former House Republican leader Dick Armey told me.

As for spending, an examination of the Democrats' campaign agenda, titled "A New Direction For America," proposes to increase a broad range of social welfare spending by hundreds of billions of dollars. One analysis by the National Taxpayers Union puts an annual price tag of some $80 billion on the Democrats spending wish list, but that is likely to be only a small part of their spending plans.

A Senate cost analysis of Democratic spending amendments for fiscal 2006 and 2007 totals $95.2 billion and $74 billion respectively. One of the plans in their agenda is an income redistribution scheme aimed at lower to median income Americans that would match the first $1,000 contributed to an IRA account at a cost of nearly $40 billion over five years.

So if you think federal taxes and spending are bad now, wait until the Democrats get a hold of the government's purse strings.

Actually
"boost capital gains and dividend taxes on investors"

I'm in favor of equalizing the ordinary income tax rate with the capital gain rate.

We shouldn't tax dividends at all though, except to the personal taxpayer as ordinary income. It would also be smart to stop taxing entities.

And then tell me you can vote for the "Peace in Our Time" Chamberlain democrats.

We must defeat the nazis before they rise up again.

War is already upon is.

Democrats spending money to help people
Whatever happen to believing what Jesus said - "Whatever you do to the least of my brethren, that you do unto me." Oh yeah, I forgot. Republicans and right wingers are hypocrits. See, Mark Foley, Newtie, Rushie the Oxy-head, Bennett the Gambler, etc. etc. etc.

Chicken hawks run though unable to fly
We know very few of those in Wshington who launched this war against Iraq are dedicated draftt dodgers who avoided wars they loved in the past. Surely the loneliest job for an Army rectuiter is to seek enlistees in an affluent American city or else at a Young Americans For Freedom convention. As a vet I had been critical of draft dodgers until finally realizing life is indeed a survival of the fittest and the most financially, socially and educationally fit will never volunteer to leave their bodies or its parts on a distant battlefield. Can anyone tell me if there are any recruiting offices in any affluent American cities? steve USN, WW2

I'm not an economist,
and I don't play one on TV.
However I will never, ever understand how anyone can call for an increase in the minimum wage AND an increase in corporate taxes, and not acknowledge the obvious impact on business.

If it costs more for a business to operate, either from higher personnel costs (wages) or greater taxes on profits, then that higher cost IS going to be passed on to the consumer.

How can anyone say otherwise?

How can anyone claim that the government forcing an increase to the cost of doing business isn't going to have a negative impact on business?

Or is the other, equally obvious (to me anyway), plan also going to be forced upon business? Price controls by the government. Forcing a business to pay a higher price to do business, then forcing the same business to maintain a cost structure that does not allow the business to recoup the lost profits.

I simply don't see any other way for it to "work".

The least of our problems
The damage to the economy and our paychecks is just the beginning if demonRATs are elected. I sincerely hope that all will get out tomorrow and vote. It isn't just our economy at stake.

Re tax cuts
This Congress can't do anything about the tax cuts; they don't expire until 2010, which is after the NEXT election.

A little early for panic on that issue, I think.

MacZed
If you have the wherewithall to create enough wealth to fall under the estate tax laws, you should be able to structure your estate to minimize the actual tax impact. A little planning goes a long way here. It is the uncertainty of the Estate Tax that makes it so dangerous. If the rules change in the middle of the game, it's hard to plan effectively.

BTW, I have a new blog up here at TH. Click my name and check it out, let me know what you think.

There is no such thing as a business tax
All taxes have to be paid by individual human beings. All business's can do is collect the taxes from individuals and pass the money on to government, local,State, and National.

So when a politician says he is going to tax a business,he is really saying he is going to tax the people. However,he would not get elected if he said he was going to tax the people for his pet project,so he lies to the people to get elected.Gee,I never heard of a politician lying before. When did this start?

Our education system is so abominable, and our newsmedia(just as bad)refuses to point this out.So they allow the politicians to get away with this fraud.

Capital Gains and Dividends Aren't
ordinary income. The return on investments represents the market value of opportunity costs as well as some profit. If I save a dollar today and invest it rather than spend it, I have to forego the benefit today for a benefit tomorrow. Look at it this way, would you rather have a dollar now, or ten years from now? You would want more than a dollar ten years from now to forego a dollar today. So, whatever you would have to have ten years from now to pass up a dollar today is the opportunity cost. This difference only makes both dollars equal in today's terms. The dollar today and the amount you would have to have in ten years to forego it have the exact same real value to you. Taxing that difference is lunacy.

and don't forget this!!
If the Dems get control, we can expect a resurgence of the sweet little Senate Immigration bill...
That bill gave illegals, who stole social security numbers of hard-working Americans...not only amnesty (along with the businesses who knowingly used them), BUT GIVES THEM THE MONEY THEY 'EARNED' WHILE COMMITTING THE FELONY.

That's right folks....it's liken that the guy who robs the bank, not only isn't hauled off to jail, he gets to keep the money.

And then add the 'citizenship' (i.e. draining our entitlements...food stamps, medicare, emergency hospitals) for these 20 million illegals and due to chain migration, another 150 or so million that will be flooding the borders of the 'Stupid Gringo' America....

well.....just see how everyone's taxes get hiked to pay for these gems.

excuse me while I go throw up.

It's not time to panic
Why all the hand-wringing? Can someone explain to me how a democratic congress can raise taxes with a Republican president sitting in office. This is just GOTV scare talk.

Unless they know something I don't - like maybe our illustrious president has permanently misplaced his veto pen. In that case, a democratic congress might help him find it (along with his nads).

Charlie Rangel is a liar
when he claims he wouldn't raise taxes on the middle class. (He is admitting that tax cuts weren't "only for the rich")

Remember Clinton's promise of "a middle-class tax cut" in the 1992 campaign? Remember Slick Willie as a "New Democrat"? Remember his prime-time TV address to the nation in 1993 when he claimed he's "worked harder than he ever did in his life" to give us a tax cut, but not only can't he cut taxes but actually has to raise them. This after G.H.W. Bush had already raised them.

If the Kimberlys of the world want to believe liars like Rangel, go ahead. Just don't complain when the Socialist-Democrats steal your purse.

Please remember - Kimberly is DNC plant
Again - he is here today (note that I won't even admit that Kimberly is a female) - this particular person is sitting in an office at DNC or some such place and his JOB is to try to disrupt boards like this one.

With that said, HONEST postings from liberals SHOULD be discussed and refuted.

Simple economics,Kimberly
Let's try something here...If you make more money you pay more taxes. The rates are as follows
10%,15%,25%,28%,33%,35% based on earnings. I am taxed based on my income-33%. And anything over the limits given...after any deductions that apply. What is not realized here with those tax cuts for the WEALTHY, which I am not...is that people who did not pay the amount of taxes we did, got more money than they should have based on those rates.
Again, what stimulates growth...investing in the economy, who pays for that with those tax cuts-the people who make more money.
Is that what you cannot stand? Someone else's blood, sweat, and tears have earned them some status? And, by God, that means they are out to s*** all over the little guy? It is simple economics. If you make alot of money, you pay alot in taxes. Are we whining? Nah, just having to work a little harder.
Work, now there's a concept liberals can't wrap their heads around, huh?

MIKE
Reread the statement of Jesus' that you quote. "Whatever YOU do to the least of my brethren, YOU do to me. That statement is aimed at each one of us individually. Nowhere does Jesus say or imply anything about government involvement whatsoever. John Kerry, in a bumbling attempt to appeal to the religious, would quote "Faith without works is dead," meaning works of government. But again, humanitarian works fall on each of us as individuals, not on government. Simply read The Constitution. It is those works we do (or don't do) as individuals upon which we will each be judged.

Any taxation above and beyond what is necessary to provide the government functions spelled out explicitly in The Constitution is THEFT. Show me where Jesus supports the institutionalized fleecing of the masses to to aid the poor. You won't find it because Jesus doesn't support receipt of stolen goods to accomplish anything. Again, it is up to each one of us individually. I would love to have the excess tax that is stolen from me each year back to help my family, friends and others in need. I would know exactly where that money goes and what it's purpose would be for, which eliminates bureaucracy and fraud. Think how great things would be if everyone operated in that spirit?

No hypocrite here, chief.

Reading comprehension
Did Kimberly fail to read the article? (Does Kimberly ever read the articles?)

The example in the article showed a $2000 tax increase on a family of four earning $50K. I don't know about Kimberly, but I don't call a family of four with $50K pre-tax income "rich". Maybe in the post-Democrat thrid world nation America will become that will be the pinnacle of wealth, but not now.

And as far as dividends and capital gains are concerned, does Kimberly think only the ultra-rich ahve retirment plans or investments? Give me a break!

JIMUSNRET
Jim-you have it absolutely correct! This is how the looters work. They count on you and I and the other productive people to continue to work harder for less and less. They do not understand how businesses work nor do they care. They would love to enact all of the items you mentioned. They will stop at nothing to bring socialism to this country; we have to fight wherever possible. "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand would be a lengthy but pointed read for you.

Kimberly- You know right well that the Bush tax cuts not only increased overall tax revenues but took the top 10% from 64% to 66% of the tax burden. Who else should get a tax cut- it is their money that they have earned by their own effort. You are a typical lib-no facts or figures, just your feelings. I suppose your response will be to insult my intelligence or call me a racist?

What do they get for their money?
What do rich people get for their money that I don't? Or, what more do I get that people who pay less lan I do get? Does one economic group get more military protection? More or better highways? Does the poor person get less national seashore or parks?

If everybody gets the same basic services why do some people have the idea that because you produce more and earn more you should provide for those who don't produce or produce less? For some reason, probably to endear himself to the non-producers, Rangel wants to do away with the Bush tax reduction.

One thing raising taxes does is encourage those in the higher brackets to move money offshore and invest in tax free investments. All of which lowers revenues to the treasury. Another thing it does is lower the amount of discretionary spending people can do, which lowers the amount of sales tax to communities to pay for public services.

When Clinton raised taxes on the rich, after promising the biggest middle class tax reduction in history, the determination at which someone, or a family, entered the rich class was truely amazing. The earnings of two young teachers in a low paying state qualified them as rich and their tax rate was raised.

One definition of a liberal is they see something they preceve as a problem and don't rest until the Government fixes it using other people's money.

Kimberly and like minded idiots, this country didn't achieve greatness by practicing the socialist ideas Charlie Rangel and you all champion. Greatness was achieved by individual effort. If someone needed help, neighbors helped their neighbors who needed legitimately needed help. If the person was just lazy they talked about him. The idea of making politically correct excuses for failure hadn't been developed yet.

If you really think socialism is the road to greatness, go ahead and vote democrat/socialist.
Or, better yet, move to a country where socialism already exists.

Correction
Please correct the following sentence: If someone needed help, neighbors helped their neighbors who needed legitimately needed help.

to read: If someone needed help, neighbors helped their neighbors who legitimately needed help. If the person was just lazy they talked about him and didn't reward the behavior.

cvn65, andrews
Kimberly and a few others don't really read the articles. Their main joy in life is cutting talking points from the DNC and/or Soros supported web sites and pasting them here. I sometimes think they are paid to do it because nobody can be that naive, except maybe Sheehan.

Also, being somewhat annonymous gives them great courage.

RepubliCONS....(Jeeeeeezz!!)
I've read every entry thus far and all can say is THANK GOD FOR NPR.

...Oh yeah-Don't forget to breath (LOL).

An $80 billion wish list isn't all
that will happen if the dims win.

As Kimmy has so gleefully pointed out in other posts, the dims will also be spending tons of money and way too much time investigating this administration, not to mention going after phantom justifications for an impeachment.

And, can drive-by Kimmy ever address the reason why the top wage earners shouldn't get back the most dollars in an across the board tax cut??? (Hint: arithmetic)

As bad as the Republicans have been at (not) holding the line on spending, the dims are definitely sharpening their pencils in anticipation of their time at the helm. And it won't be pretty. ~$$~ Watch them throw evem NORE money down the war-on-poverty hole.

off the subject...
Gunny G,
Today, I found a column on Real Clear. I post it here for all to see
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2006/11/the_only_issue_this_election_d.html
Every now and then there is a RATIONAL democrat with values! WOW. A long read, very well done.

Bad link
Go to Real Clear Politics...look up columns and the name Orson Scott Card. It is a great read. Just don't tell Kimberly, fdr4, phylo, they might call the guy a DINO even though he admits his affiliation.

Get your head out of the clouds
Give me a break. If you think the terrorist cares about tax cuts and the Democrat politics then your just dreaming. This election is not about politics. It's about propaganda over issues and a party who could care less about the war in Iraq or National Security. Why don't you speak about the Democrats patriotism, the Patriot Act, the NSA program, or defunding the war in Iraq. Forget about Tokyo Rose Pelosi with her demoralizing radio messages to the American people and our troops about needing a change. Our troops really needs to hear the Democrats cry about changing course, timetable withdraws and defunding the war in Iraq. Why don't you refresh the American people on how the Democrats have sat out this war for over five years and now wants to change course in their unpatriotic direction. Your so out of touch, you left so much out in how other then tax cuts, the Democrats in charge will effect our way of life. This election has gone way beyond politics. It comes to who is better suited in their ideology to better take care of this country. Sure, the terrorist endorses the Democrats in their propaganda radio messages. Why shouldn't they. Who has taken the side of the terrorist in every word they have spoken since we went into Iraq. Who has attacked President Bush and our troops with their own propagnada. Who has aired the terrorist propaganda to the American people in hopes of demoralizing the American people. Who is it that wants Iraq to fail. Who is it that wants us to lose in Iraq. Politics? Stop listening to the rhetoric the Democrats spew out every chance they get. If you can't tell the level of hatred for this country, President Bush, and our troops, that the Democrats have been so bold to throw in the faces of the American people, then your haven't been paying attention to anything othen then the politics end of this election.

Funny thing about income taxes...
1) They tax earnings (income), not wealth. The rich can simply stop working and in some cases qualify for benefits simply because they have a low income. Taxes create a disincentive to behave in a way that results in more taxes, ergo income taxes discourage more income. It doesn't discourage everybody from earning more, but it does discourage those at the margin where the benefits of increased earnings less taxes is balanced by the increased time and effort required to obtain those earnings.
2) Tax rates correlate inversely with federal revenues in our lifetimes. Counter intuitive, perhaps, but irrefutable. Simply review the effect on federal revenue following JFK, Reagan, and now Bush tax cuts. It is completely disingenuous to blame deficits, particularly in the long-term on tax cuts or to predict that tax rate increases will result in increased revenues. Since deficits (or surpluses) must consider both revenues and expenses, it is the height of demogoguery to blame deficits on tax cuts.
3) Another anecdote on the unintended consequences of taxes. This is from a case where sales taxes were raised on a luxury instead of raising income taxers, but it is illustory? Are Kimberly and her friends old enough to remember what happened when yachts and private planes saw an increase in luxury taxes? Lo and behold, fewer were sold. And the result was not that tax revenue went up, but that it went down. But that was the benign part of the story. The hideous part was that all those companies who hire workers to build planes and boats had to scale back due to falling sales. Suddenly there were a lot of skilled workers who were suddenly out of work thanks to a tax on the rich that did not increase revenues but simply punished everybody.

Hey Gunny
All I'm saying is that after reading all this DOOMS-Day retoric, I'm suprised "You Folks" could get out of bed this morning. I hope your not standing near any sharp objects or open windows on Wednesday morning....

...Tee-Hee.

Re: taxes
The solution to our taxation problems at the federal level is two--fold. One -- end the IRS for good and enact the Fair Tax. And two -- end the process of ear-marking.

The Fair Tax will make taxation "fair" which is something our current system is definitely not. And will put an end to the vote-buying scheme by politicians playing with the tax code every few years to pay off the promises to the many with the hard-earned dollars of the few.

I also believe that if we could end ear-marking and force these politicians to make the case for the "bridge to nowhere" etc... on a case by case basis that spending would at least be out in the open. Maybe we could even shame them a little into voting themselves a little less pork. Maybe. We can live and hope.

By the way, noticed the tone today is a little more strident and nasty than usual -- even from the usual suspects. Relative newcomers like Go USA are particularly loathsome. Hope it doesn't become the norm.

FeedFwd
Good points. Now, can you restate those points in small words so Kimberly and her friends will be able to read them?

By the way, some of the smaller yacht companies went out of business.

Good luck of the Democrats win
Liberals and democrats are just a bunch of Tweeties: they can squawk, but they can't fly.

Prepare for plenty of squawking on Wednesday morning.

Jesus, Mike and Hypocrites
Mike, your misquote has already been corrected. It is amazing to me that your bias actually shows a big difference between liberals and conservatives. Conservatives understand Jesus' admonition to help others, liberals can't be bothered, so they want the government to do it for them.

On the Hypocrite note, it has bothered me from the beginning that Foley owned up to inappropriate messages, and resigned. Studds committed a crime, denied it and is lionized as a hero. Here in my home, William Jefferson was found with $90,000 of bribes in his fridge and Nancy Pelosi raises hell because he is voted off of a committee before the wheels of justice fully catch up with him. Now...just who are the hypocrites?

Cathy B
"By the way, noticed the tone today is a little more strident and nasty than usual -- even from the usual suspects. Relative newcomers like Go USA are particularly loathsome. Hope it doesn't become the norm."

Don't break out the champaigne just yet, Butchy Boy. The fat lady is warming up but has yet to sing.

Wednesday AM prediction: Democrats: "WE WUZ ROBBED! (AGAIN!!!)

Oh, and if the improbable should occur and the Dems get control of one or both houses of Congress, guess what? I'll have a 15 minute pity-party with myself, then get busy making sure 2008 reverses this anomaly, including electing the next Rebublican presidential candidate.

Contrast that with what is likely if the "Main Stream Media's" poll predictions don't come true... endless recounts and lawsuits will immediately occur and the always-predictable chants of voter fraud will be the Dem mantra for the next two years. Why? Because it NEVER occurs to the Dems that America has listened - and rejected them.

Kimberly dear...
... I know mathematics is not nearly as interesting or as sophisticated as humanities, philosophy, drama or political science, but a certain basic understanding is necessary to survive in these great United States - and especially if you are going to comment on a column that requires the ability to add and subtract.

Now, let's try this (this one should be easy since it requires no "borrowing & carrying" numbers!).

$7,538 - $5,115 = $2,423. Now, that represents an INCREASE in taxes of 47.37%!!! ($2,423 divided by $5,115 expressed as a percentage).

And that's what you people mean by "tax breaks for the rich?"

spending money to help people
Regarding: Democrats spending money to help people
Whatever happen to believing what Jesus said - "Whatever you do to the least of my brethren, that you do unto me."

Oh yeah, I forgot....

Democrats don't spend their own money to help people - they confiscate money from those who earn it and give it to those who won't (not can't) work.

Speaking of Hypocrites....

Marxist Pigs state that Bush is guilty of war crimes for attacking terrorists, while refering to the terrorist as freedom fighters. Yet, when the homosexual Janet "Hitler wannabe" Reno ordered the massacre of the children, women & men who were members of the Branch Davidians (to intimidate Christians) who had terrorized no-one, the Marxists defended her actions while demanding the execution of "freedom fighter" Timothy McVeigh.

the link between taxes and spending
The coming Congress can only raise taxes with the complicity of the President. No doubt they will try to raise the taxes a the upper level by pairing them with middle class tax cuts to make them more palatable. If the dems win a house, it will be interesting to see whether Bush wants to work with them to get some things he wants, or run against them. I have no idea going in which way he will go.

But I am puzzled by the article aboves linking of spending rates with taxing ones. The repubs in congress have shown pretty conclusively that the abilty of the government to spend money is not tied to the amount of money it brings in. Even if the Dems managed to raise taxes, the first large part of that would still have to go to erasing the deficit (and ideally to decreasing the debt) before anyone could say there is money lying around to be spent. Not that the dems wouldn't say that anyway. Why should they be expected to act better than repubs on the subject?

Primus54
That's what makes this such an exciting time.

And for what its worth, I really do admire that "Do not go gently into that good-night" spirit...

Rage-RAGE aginst the Dying of the Light!!!

butch4906
You are correct! Exciting times! :-)

Another Republican hack
“Federal social welfare spending will go up and the core of the Republican tax cuts will be repealed.”

Black and white reasoning. The sky is falling. (1) Those tax cuts don't expire until 2010, who knows what the world may bring. And why didn't the GOP make them final in the first place? Because they wanted a continual election year issue, for political advantage instead of doing right by the people. Also known as Bad Faith. (2) Bush will focus on SS reform last 2 years (he will fail on that also); and vetoes any Dem-sponsored over-spending.

This column can only be described as partisan political desperation, with elections tomorrow. Because to talk about any current issues means to lose votes! Illegal Immigration, the war in Iraq, the federal Overspending, the Corruption, all failures on the GOP majority watch. You have got to be kidding.

If you have majorities in all branches in government and your best slogan for re-election is that the other guy is even worse, then you have completely squandered your incumbency.

Hey Mike,
Isn't that a CHRISTIAN idea? Whatever happened to the liberals' beloved "separation of church and state"?

It is incumbent on INDIVIDUALS to strive to follow the charitable example of Christ. It is NOT a function of the federal government (or at any rate it is not supposed to be).

The government of the United States of America is NOT empowered to "spend money to help people", at least not beyond promoting the GENERAL welfare of the citizens of the country. If you do not believe me, just read our Constitution. No where in that document is Congress, the President or the Supreme Court empowered to "spend money to help people". BOTH parties seem to have lost track of this fact. They should be sticking to exercising the powers they are specifically granted in the Constitution.

As far as believing in/following the teachings of Christ, that is an induividual choice (you ARE pro-choice aren't you?). You should contribute as much of your money as you want to to your favorite charities; I will continue to do the same (to MY favorite charities, of course). The federal government needs to stay out of the charity/welfare business.

Keener
Sorry, I didn't see your response to Mike before I posted mine.

Gadget282
Good post, well thought out and rational.

Too bad it's not going to convince the socialists like Kimberly, Butch4906 et al.

Their idea of "good government" is confiscation and redistribution of wealth. They think they'll get a piece of that action, but they won't. The ruling class will take all and Kimberly will get . . . promises.

There hasn't been one socialist government on this planet that can show the proletariat (lower economic class for those in Rio Linda) becoming WEALTHIER after a democratic government fell. Not one. Even if they survived the socialists' purges, they are still what they were: poor. Only now, they are poor and oppressed.

David Mac
Here's my thing, not nearly as elaborate as your buddy Inspector Gadget, but here it is:
One of the core themes of the Republican party's agenda and view of "Good Government" is to framework programs that allow the rich to get richer and then in turn they will share their weath with the rest of us ( Trickle-Down or Supply-Side, or What ever) , but history has shown that when that is allowed, the only thing that really happens is that rich guys get richer, period.

posted, "history has shown that when that (the trickle down theory) is allowed, the only thing that really happens is that rich guys get richer, period."

So you are saying that we aren't the wealthiest people, generally, on the planet?

Why are people risking their lives to cross the Rio Grande and the desert for minimum wage jobs in the USA?

Our lower economic classes have higher standards of living than almost every other middle class on the planet.

What proof do you offer that I'm worse off under a Republican administration? The Socialist-Democrats want to take away my tax cuts, take away the Patriot Act, kowtow to the terrorists (i.e., pay them off) and redistribute my immense wealth (I'm lower-middle class) to those who never earned it.

The old Marxist diatribes against capitalism are pure sophistry. Welcome to the 21st century.

Stop watching CNN for a while and you'll see the President has been talking about the Iraq war at all of his stops. What has Nancy Pelosi said on the issues...oh that's right the Democrats have to hide her and Harry Reid. Can't let the American people see who would actually be the leaders of the House and Senate if the Dems win. Illegal immagration is being talked about by most Republican candidates and the Democrat candidates who have to run as conservatives to even be electable. Overspending - I don't understand your problem here as the No Child and Prescription Drug plan are programs where President Bush worked with Democrats. Corruption - don't be so naive to think it doesn't happen in both parties. As for GOP failures - if Democrats had good ideas that were dismissed for partisan reasons, than I would agree with you. But there has been nothing worthwhile, postive, inspiring or patriotic about what most Democrats have said or done since 2000 and don't deserve to win the majority in the House and/or Senate.

Just for the record and for whats its worth. Im a middle class Ham-n-Egger just like you. And no friggin way would I use a back and forth with you to stand-up for folks that dont have anything, because thay dont WANT anything. What Im trying to say is that the cannons of " Republicanism " have no more to do with the agenda of the current day GOP than it does the
John Kerry Crew.

It's well known that if the government takes all the wealth and redistributes equally to everybody, eventually most of the people who were wealthy will be wealthy again and most of the people who were poor will be poor again. It has something to do with drive and ambition.

So rather than complain about the rich, why don't you immitate what the rich guys have done and become rich yourself. There is nothing wrong with being rich, most people I know consider it far superior to being poor. If you get rich and then feel guilty you can feel better by donating your wealth to the poor.

Even better you could pay for training programs for the poor and supply them with low interest loans and allow them to start businesses and raise themselves out of poverty. I forgot, the government already does that.

Then, you cold even use your wealth to start businesses to employ poor people and help raise them out of poverty. Or you could invest your money in existing businesses, allowing them to expand and grow and hire more people, raising them up from poverty. In general, you could make your money work for you and the population at the same time. I think this could almost be described as trickle down.

The idea is it should be up to you to decide how much of your money you want to keep.

David Mac, your're correct when you say the proletariat will stay where they are. Socialism/comunism only serves those in power and they have to oppress people to stay there.

Democrats
Reading your rticle today remainds me soo much of the articles I read by folks like you who encouraged voters before last Congressioal election to vote republican. A vote for republicans was a "sure way to keep the spending in Washington down. That was a bunch of wasted paper as is the article you just wrote. IN short it was absurd then and is NOW. It is pure scare tatics on the day before election

Kraut
This quote is typical of the socialist agenda: "The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism, but under the name of liberalism they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program until one day America will be a socialist nation without ever knowing how it happened." [Norman Thomas, six-time Socialist Party presidential candidate and one of the founders of the ACLU].

I don't know why anyone would vote for socialism. I think a significant minority of the American people have just been scammed by the Socialist-Democrats into thinking they will be better off under socialism.

Part of it is our public education system which fails to show the failed economic theories of Marx and Engels. Instead, our public education system concentrates more on diversity and tolerance and political correctness, instead of showing the misery of the socialist countries throughout the world.

dems= gun control
if there are any gun owners out there remember what we went through when billy c was in office ,well get ready if the liberal dems get into power to break the bank trying to fight all the gun grabbers schemes they are going to lay on all of us.the dems just hate the fact that americans have guns and they are bound and determined to strip that right away and make a criminal out of you,the second amendment is our insurance policy against them taking away all the other rights, now libs will say there not going to do that, well bullsheet they have been at it for many many years and we must stop these pond scum from doing there communist gun control plans. SO GET OUT AND VOTE REPUBLICAN TOMMORROW!!!!!!!!

You beat me to "Imputed Income".
Anyone with an equity in their home or any other real property should head to GunnyG's Blog and find out about Imputed Income.
Have a tightly roled up piece of paper between your teeth when you read it though because it will tighten your jaws a mite!

GunnyG's Blog seems packed right now.
What "Imputed Income Tax" is;
If you own a home or anything that could be rented, they evaluate the rental value and add whatever it is to your taxable income.

Say you own a home and they asses the rental value at $1,400 per month then you add $16,800 to your taxable income. You just became one of the rich they only tax.
If the home is not paid for and you make monthly payments on it then you can deduct it from the Imputed Tax and you only need to pay tax on the remainder.
What would it cost you to rent that car you drive?

I think it conflicts with the Constitutional right to OWN private property but a Liberal Judge can fix that little detail.

my opine
good clip ,and the libs say that will never happen ,just another of there long list of lies, they wont rest until they have civil war in this country over our rights being violated,if law abiding citizens cannot own guns then we have lost our country to these liberal scum bags and we live like all good communists ., they sicken me the rotten liberal pukes.

gunner
In Russia less than 5% of the people are Communists by choice BUT they are the ones who have the guns!

Same thing in China.
Was that way in 1947 anyway.

come wednesday morning
an open comment to all our liberal fans out there: If, by some miracle, things go south for us Tuesday and the Dems take over, dont worry about us. We're conservative not liberals which means that we're not gonna sit around and whine and complain and jump out windows. We're simply gonna get up, dust ourselves off and start getting ready for 2008. See, conservatives are fighters and survivors. That's why we're so good in times of national crisis.
I do have to laugh tho. Just saw another Democrat's commercial about how the policy of "Stay the Course" isnt working. The problem is he never said what his policy is tho. It does stand to reason if the current policy is "Stay the Course" and you're against it, the only policy left is "Cut and Run".
And thats whats gonna happen on Wednesday morning if Pelosi and her gang take over.

Think about it.....If you dare!!!!

dems must go
we must all get out and vote republican so these liberals dont screw up the country again, i dont want to spend anymore money fighting for our second amendment right, ive been fighting for this right to stay intact since i was 18 and now im in the fiftys so its pretty crazy that we have to fight americans to keep our rights from being taken away, they take an oath to uphold the constitution and the liberals in the house and senate keep trying to strip that right away from us, where the heck do these people come from,we have troops fighting and dying to preserve our freedom and these liberal idiots are here trying to take it away, whats wrong with this picture?

Time to Re-enter the Fray

"So if you think federal taxes and spending are bad now, wait until the Democrats get a hold of the government's purse strings."

If the Democrats take both houses, Bush will prevent anything very radical from happening for the next two years. It will be interesting to see how the budget battles go down - will Bush show as much backbone as Clinton did? Will Congress look as bad as Gingrich's Congress did in '95? Will Bush move toward the center as Clinton did?

More than likely, the result will be gridlock. Which is very good for us, the folks who live and work in our economy. Get out of the way, stop meddling and changing and tinkering, allow people and businesses to make rational plans while expecting little change, and we get a real view of how powerful our economy is.

But let's suppose that the Democrats peel back some of the tax cuts. Recent history tells us that if taxes are increased, spending is likely to either go down or at least increase more slowly.

When the Democrats raised taxes in 1993, the real growth rate of spending decreased from 1.28% in 1992 to -0.95% in 1993.

When Bush I and the Democrat Congress increased taxes in 1991, the real growth rate of spending declined from 3.94% in 1990 to 1.41% in 1991.

By contrast, when Bush and the Republican Congress cut taxes in 2001, the real growth rate of spending increased from 1.25% in 2001 to 6.26% in 2002. In case you think it was all 9/11-related -- non-defense discretionary spending skyrocketed, from a growth rate of 4.34% in 2001 to 10.52% in 2002.

So buck up! Electing Democrats may be the only way to rein in government spending. Certainly, having Republicans running everything in Washington hasn't worked.

Give Iraqs oil wealth to al Qaeda?
That sounds like a sure way to strengthen Terrorists.
Give them a training base financed by the Worlds 2nd largest supply of high grade oil.

If Democrats Cut & Run from Iraq and provide a victory al Qaeda can crow about and use as an example of how weak Americans are to help recruit more terrorists, we can be positive there will be strikes here in America.

If Democrats do win and we have school busses and shopping centers bombed, remember the Democrats caused it and knew it would happen in advance. Our "Touchy Feel Good Liberals" just might get a bunch of American civilians killed and maimed on behalf of the libral cause.

And see what they plan for America

The Voter In The Mirror
Part of me realizes that the only way to rid the GOP of the RINOs are for the GOP to lose Congress. For it is RINOs (the REAL ones, the ones who deny being Republican except in name only.)that are hurting the only viable party that can stop the Liberals.

Look at Santorum and Hayworth...both got snookered by the immigration issue...and BOTH are fighting for their political life. (Hayworth's opponent couldn't even get elected to some small time office but is now slated to win Hayworth's seat.) Both believed talk show host Laura Ingraham and the RINO pundits when they told them that the base cared about immigration MORE than the war in Iraq...that cutting spending during time of war was more important than turning the economy around after 9/11.

They spun and you all bought it...and we will probably lose those really good Republicans.

But the other part of me...remembers reading about those who had fought with our men side by side in Vietnam...only to be slaughtered when we left. And the part that talked to Vietnam Vets who told me about coming home to be spit upon and called baby killers.

And of course the first Gulf war...when we left Saddam to mow down a million of his own people who believed us when we said...come fight with us and we will make you free.

I told myself never...never would I stand there and not say something when America is getting ready to turn her back on her allies--and her troops AGAIN...

So...I am here on record to say this to all of you who insists on giving the Republicans a fanny whipping...if the Dems take over Congress tomorrow...and San Fran Nan keeps her promise to cut the funding to the military...when the Iraqi people are once again slaughtered (as they were when we left Saddam in power in the first Gulf war-and as the 2 million Cambodians were killed when we cut and ran out of Vietnam)...I want you stand there and watch them die.

Don't you dare turn away and turn off your t.v. set. Because you KNEW. Nancy told you she and her Democratic run Congress would cut the funding and bring our troops back.

She may not have told you what we'd leave behind...but if you know anything about history, you KNOW. And if you don't have the decency to put humanity above your pet Conservative Utopia dreams, then at least have the courage to face the consequencies of your selfishness and short sightedness.

I'll second that motion. Motion carried.

Advancing Conservatism
The best thing that could happen to the conservative movement in America, is for the Democrats to win the house. This would give the American public, 60% of whom have never heard of Nancy Pelosi, the opportunity to seen these ultra-liberal anti capitalists in action. First, they could not get anything done, because President Bush could veto it. That would leave them with only the ability to investigate Bush with hopes of impeachment. I think most of us still remember how the nation objected to the Republicans impeaching Clinton.

Since, I hoe there will be two openings on the Supreme Court, (Ginsburg & Breyer) we need to keep Republicans in charge of the Senate.
