Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

WASHINGTON -- Republicans are opening up a new campaign front in the elections that asks voters to think about who will be running Congress if the Democrats are returned to power in November.

People like House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi who said "I don't really consider ourselves at war" with terrorism, who believes Osama bin Laden's capture will not "make us any safer" and who thinks this election "shouldn't be about national security."

Polls show that most voters do not really know much about what the Democrats would do about Iraq or the war on terrorism because their agenda does not say much about either. Voters know even less about the records and statements of the Democratic leaders who would take over the reins of power if voters put them in charge of the House.

The Republican National Committee and the GOP's congressional campaign committee, who want to correct this knowledge deficit, have begun an educational offensive to do so. It began last week with the first in a series of research papers on Pelosi and other Democratic leaders.

Pelosi, who could become House Speaker and third in line for the presidency, was asked on "Meet the Press" in May about her pledge to hold investigative hearings on the war in Iraq if Democrats took charge.

Could such hearings lead to President Bush's impeachment, moderator Tim Russert asked her. "Well," Pelosi replied, "you never know where the facts take you ..." While President Bush is sharpening his message on terrorism and other issues that are at stake in this election -- and lifting his job-approval polls to 44 percent in the process -- the GOP is looking for ways to remind voters that, like Pelosi, the Democrats' leftist leadership is far outside the nation's political mainstream.

They have been doing just that lately in congressional races where the Republicans are considered vulnerable. Like Indiana's 8th district where Republican Rep. John Hostettler faces challenger Brad Ellsworth, sheriff of Vanderburgh County. The NRCC is running a TV ad there that tells voters: "Here's something to think about. Democrats in Congress believe that your taxes should be higher to pay for their bigger government. They believe wiretapping of terrorist communications violates civil liberties. And Congressional Democrats believe that illegal immigrants should get amnesty. No matter how you slice it, a vote for Brad Ellsworth is a vote to put these Democrats in charge of Congress. But their agenda is just too risky."

This ad in one variation or another is being run in a number of other districts where Republicans are at risk and, if the polls are accurate, with significant success. The ad not only plants doubts in the minds of swing Democrats and independents, it will motivate Republican turnout, too, GOP officials tell me. The RNC research papers that will be churned out for the remainder of this election cycle -- e-mailed to the GOP's vast list of 15 million activists -- will reinforce these ads and provide fodder for other ads to come.

Most of the GOP's dossiers are about Democrats who aren't exactly household names -- people like veteran Rep. Henry Waxman, the ranking Democrat on the House Government Reform Committee. Waxman would become the panel's chairman with full subpoena power to dig into every nook and cranny of government.

Who is Henry Waxman? First and foremost, one of the most partisan, bare-knuckle pols the Democrats have. Earlier this year, he signed a legal brief filed in U.S. District Court that called domestic terrorist surveillance "illegal." He voted to rescind the anti-terrorist USA Patriot Act that Bush says is vital to the war on terrorism. He opposed the $87 billion in funds for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Another target in the RNC's "educational papers" is Florida Rep. Alcee Hastings, an impeached former federal judge whom Pelosi has indicated she would put in charge of the supersecret House Intelligence Committee.

Hastings, who was indicted on charges of bribery, conspiracy and obstruction of justice, was impeached by the House (by a vote of 413-to-3) and removed from the bench in the Senate by a vote of 69-to-26. He later ran and won his seat in a solidly Democratic district.

"That an impeached judge could conceivably become head of the Intelligence Committee I think many Americans would find alarming," RNC spokesman Danny Diaz told me.

But this is a guy who voted against the Patriot Act giving government authorities the tools to protect the country from terrorists in October 2001, just a few weeks after the airline attacks by Islamic fanatics.

Equally alarming is the Democrat in line to chair the House Judiciary Committee: ultra-liberal Rep. John Conyers of Michigan, who has all but called for Bush's impeachment.

This is all pretty outrageous stuff that most Americans will not only find deeply appalling but dangerous. That's why the Republicans are going to make sure that people know who they'd be putting into critical positions of power if they vote to give the Democrats majority control on Nov. 7.

Make Love Not War
The left, are quite outspoken about keeping the religion of those "fundie Christers" out of their tax funded schools. But when it come the rash of religious speech in the sexual education department all speech suddenly becomes gospel. That is understandable considering how many liberals worship there. Devoted to the hatred of the natural human body, the gift of the creator, to pro-create, to assure mankind of a progressive, healthly and sane exsistance. What will this seedy behavior cost the America, with the many billions of our tax dollars going to the treatment and cure of sexually transmitted disease's. What will the costs be of mental health, emotional health and the overall progress of the American People. It is getting to the point of no return, for surley a nation with no innocense, no respect, no moral or self discipline can claim any victory and it is certain of failure.

About dang time
Finally, the Republicans are fighting back. They should have been running those kind of ads a long time ago. Instead, when Mr. Bush's poll numbers were low, they did their best impression of "duck and cover". We need them, we're gonna voter for them, but when this election is all over, we're gonna have to take them back to school and teach them how to be Republicans.

Elect Republicans?
I still find it hard to vote for anyone who supports the president's amnesty plan for the Illegals. There were a large number of Republican congresspeople who voted for it.

Craig C
You and me both. If i lived in a state where a RINO was up for re-election i would be in a quandry. I hate to see people like Chaffee get re-elected, but it would be hard to take the chance that voting against him, or evenstaying home might result in DEM control of congress. This would have the up side of showing just how rotten the left is, but the price might be too high. If i thought gridlock would result i'd do it. The fat cat lying GOP pols who are spending like crazy and voting for amnesty desparately need to get axed. On the other hand look at the fix an idealistic DEM voter is in. The vast majority actually love America (although you never seem to hear from them) and look at the choice they are faced with. Vote DEM and be voting for folks who insist we are in no danger from the Jihadis. Cut and run in Iraq is our best option? I feel sympathy for the folks who have to try and figure that one out.

Hold your nose and vote GOP
Even though many of the Republicans in the House, Senate, and White House support unConstitutional laws, unConstitutional spending, and unConstitutional big government, the alternative is much worse. Until the Constitution Party becomes an electable alternative, I'll continue to hold my nose and vote Republican (except where the GOP candidate is opposed by only a Libertarian, as is the case in many Texas judicial races...in those I vote against the GOP).

Craig C
You are right. But if you think democrats have or will vote against it, you are sadly mistaken. The powers that be, or want to be, are both on the same side of that issue for entirely different reasons. Republicans for the labor force, Democrats for the voting block. So turning out either party won't affect that issue at all. You must think about the bigger issue, and that is national defence. The time to make your feelings known about the actions of politicians is in the primaries. I have been sending emails threatening to work to turn out any incumbent unless they go back to the real republican platform. Every primary that comes around is an opportunity to make your feelings known without selling our country out to the liberal cowards.

Get Your Act Together Republicans
I cannot understand why the republicans are not more aggressively putting an end to this nightmare of gay marriage and gay rights. As the U.N Approves Global taxes to Aids. With this new proposal to generate more foreign aid a plan that would leave the U.S. owing an additional $8.45 billion in foreign aid. You can go to Accuracy in the Media U.N. Approves Global Taxes to Fight Aids. None of the News, or Media outlets impress just how all of this is effectiving the U.S.A. How it is effectiving Education, Health Care Costs, Income Taxes and all of our Countries Concerns with other Nations. It is apparent that the political office, has become a war zone, between the parties and our tax dollars are the feed to contiune the battle.

Mid-terms
This close to the elections and the Democrat Party still haven't put out a comprehensive plan for what they are going to do except dismantle things... things that appear to be working.

Over the summer Congress must have gotten an earful from their constituents on illegal immigration because it appears that change is in the wind. Their town meetings and the fact that approximately 500 state and local governing bodies have enacted or in the process of enacting their own legislation to protect their citizens against the illegal invasion must have opened their eyes.

I will vote GOP this fall, but they are going to have to change and act like winners and keep the promises they make!

The Republican Plan
The reasons for a "late" Republican response and for their previously limited agressiveness is simple.

Democrats react, they don't have a platform until they hear the republican position!

How better to beat them than to allow them to take the lead, the wrong lead, vocally and irrevocably, then pull the rug out from under them.

I believe this is the Republican plan, just watch it unfold! The real key for the Republicans was deciding when to start. Just hope they didnt start too soon, i.e. start too soon = Democrats able to formulate effective counter messages and reverse the current poll trend.

Your posts
Crawfish, how lucky you are to have the chance to vote against the GOP without worrying about putting a DEM in by default.

Kathy, it baffles and frustrates me too. Polls show huge majorities want these things. Why doen't the GOP majority produce these popular measures?

Oldguy
My local county govt is implementing laws making it mandatory to check apprehended lawbreakers for alien status. Undocumented folks will be jailed under local laws. This kind of stuff infuriates higher ups who interpret this as ingringing on their turf, even when they are doing nothing themselves. DA's hate , rapists, and murderers. Its not so much eyeopening, as making action look more worth it.

Ives, my thoughts exactly. May the timing be right, or may further events support the timing, better still, both.

This is so common
to read about the quandry voters have over their votes. "My guy is great except for .... and ...., how can I support That? But if I don't vote for him then the really bad guy will win!

The result is we have a two party system who's only apparent job is to get re-elected. This is such common knowledge that we even discuss it and then dismiss it as unsolveable. Without Federal term limits, I agree there is no change coming any time soon.

But if folks want the kind of representation they want they best get involved in politics at an early age, meaning when the future candidates run for City Council! Good upbringing insures a good result and most all these critters start low and aim high. From City Council to County posts to State level to Federal level. Unless you are a celebrity, that is the way up.

It will take a generation to change politics so you best get your kids involved to either run themselves or help the correct folks. The most common exit for a congressman or senator is retirement or death. We just have to outlive them! No easy task there.

Kathy & Pistol
It is the courts. We have liberal activist judges who know the scenario they push can't get passed in congress so they use the bench to get what they want. Where in the constitution does it say abortion is constitutional? Especially partial birth abortion, where you can crush the scull of an infant if you do it before it is fully born. I guess one foot still inside the mother is legal. We really need to look at the appeals court judges and weed out the liberal activists. Did you not notice the judges in Cal. and Mass. marrying Gay and lesbian couples, even though their state laws prohibited it?

Marc of CA
Use the primaries. Vote out any incumbent that doesn't meet you criteria. Work to see that they know why you didn't back them. Make it plain that you support your party, but not just any man the party throws out there.

correction
DA's hate vigilantes, even though they themselves release child molestors, rapists..

To Marc of CA
Term limits sound good, but unless there is a limit to the number of years that a congressional staffer can be on the Federal payroll, they will not work.

Having worked as a lobbyist at the federal level, I know how powerful that congressional staffers are. As a matter of fact our government is actually being run by twenty-somethings with little no no real world experience outside of college/grad/or law school. But after spending few years on the Hill and treated like roayalty, Congressional aides get intoxicated by the abnormal life they lead. As a result they stay forever, each year gaining a little more power and prestige.

The only effective brake that congressional staff have is the amount of authority that their boss has. A freshman member of Congress is 100% at the mercy of their congressional staff. The new Congressman doesn't even know where the bathrooms are much less how do get anything done.

So, the real way to get a control on the Legislative branch of our goverment is to 1) have term limits for members of Congress; coupled with 2) term limits on how long a person can work for Congress.

If these two measures are adopted, then we could begin to have the citizen government that the Framers of the Constitution actually envisioned. After their terms expire, Congressional staffers and member of Congress would then have to leave Washington, get a real job and live under the laws they enacted, just like the rest of us.

Txharleyman
and then be allowed back to DC to undo their previous nincompoopery.

They Don't Want To Offend
pistol=
My Blood boils everytime I think that the Conservative majority, feels that they may offend the liberal conserative, the log cabin crew and liberal conserative media, Like Tammy B. radio talk show. Our children are subject to homosexual indoctriantion because of the money that is generated to politic's , through this insanity. Worst of all the rotten politcal mood is so corrupt that very little is done honest or with integrity. No wonder people just don't care anymore and do anything they can to disgrace the christians. I beleive God will return sooner than we think as it truely may be the end of this he!! on earth.

Dems Are Worse
So we need a viable third party or Independent.
Any volunteers?

My Representative
is a good one. He votes the majority of how I feel. No problem voting for him. However, we have 2 Democrat Senators, I liked to get rid of but, only one is running. I will definitely be voting against her.

To nanarae and txharleyman
nanarae got my point but I contend the primaries imply they are already at the state level of selection,as county positions are usually called "nonpartisan." {excuse be while I gag] I think you have to weed the chaff earlier.

txharleyman gave us some good info and further background and I agree limiting staff time sounds good too. I wonder how that would get past the Courts? I imagine it is a forgone conclusion either or both limits would require an Amendment. And who is going to propose that law???

BTW, we have term limits here in CA however the gerrymandering of the voting districts had totally insured the "Party" never looses. Almost got that overturned by State Proposition last election but the unions loved their Democrat lemmings too much to allow it to pass. Unions spend tens of millions to defeat several laws that wouod have opened up CA to true representative government.

RE: Alcee Hastings
According to Article I, Section 3, Alcee Hastings is disqualified to hold any office under the United States of America due to his impeachment and conviction as a Federal Judge. Now he stands to be the next Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee if the Democrats win in November. It's too bad the Democrats don't care about the Constitution and the Republicans are too scared of being slandered with the "racism" charge.

Term limits
Take a look at my latest essay, posted today on my blog: "Leftifornia Liberal Lunacy. Again" if you want to get some idea of how term limits are a chimera.

Old guy: holding your nose won't work; the Reps have no incentive to change. After all, if conservatives are still going to vote for Repubs, even if they're holding their collective nose, why bother working for their vote?

I still maintain that I'd like to see the Senate fall to the Dems in November. That's the wakeup call the Repubs need. I don't mind a couple of years of gridlock.

Otherwise, we're REALLY in trouble come 2008.

BrianR
Agreed. We have de facto gridlock anyway. Might as well use it to maybe shake up the RINOs and big spenders. Wouldn't it be nice to have another election like 80 when only 63 % of incumbents got back in. The whole congress was a Reagan rubber stamp for 18 months.

RINOs
I live in Dave Hobson's district in Ohio. He has a reputation as a fiscal conservative, and I can't for the life of me figure out why. He's a RINO all the way, but whenever he appears on the ballot I grudgingly cast a vote for him just because I don't want the likes of Nancy Pelosi to hold any more power than they already do.

It's too bad so many Republicans think they're somehow required to vote for the incumbent in a primary.

Dollface . . .
I've wondered about that, too. How did Alcee Hastings even run for office?

Maybe there's some constitutional lawyer out there that can answer that question.

Term Limits
Bad idea.

We have a system called "voting" which limits elected officials to exactly the number of terms a person can serve. It's run by the people. As in "We the people".

To arbitrarily assign a specific number of terms or years is just and only that: arbitrary. What happens if a really good politician (I know, BrianR, that's an oxymoron) is serving and doing the people's work? Do we term limit that guy?

Just because losers like Kennedy and Kerry and Pelosi and Reid keep getting re-elected doesn't provide sufficient cause to limit EVERY senator and representative to a certain tenure.

Pistol, DavidMack
Pistol: What a thought!

DavidMack: Actually, there are really good politicians; my Rep, Buck McKeon, is one of them. I agree with you wholeheartedly. The term limit idea was wholly devised to get FDR out of office, and the irony is that he died before it could have any effect.

Brian R
Fact is, FDR died before the term limit. President Truman pushed forth that.

Next: The problem is this, the Republicans get re-elected, they will decide that since the Dems are so loony they can do whatever they want and still get back in. If we elect the RINO's in November it is an admission that we, the People, are beaten by the politicians and by next summer there will be an amnesty for all the illegals.

Uh, ever notice that most of the Republicans calling for amnesty, under any name, are not up for re-election this year? Which makes the ones up for re-election the ones favoring close the borders and no amnesty. Next year, they will be for amnesty and the ones up in '08 will be close the border no amnesty platforms. It is an old con game. Maybe they are right. Maybe the American voter is too dumb, after all, to take care of his country.

Buck
You bring up a subtle con game i've been aware of for years. there is no doubt in my mind the house and senate take turns passing popular bills that somehoe get killed in the opposite house without fanfare. This means the rats can claim they voted for say, immigration reform but those other rats wouldn't let it go through. 3 years later the houses switch roles. I despair the voters will ever catch on at the subtle level. It takes the equivalent of an earthquake to get any action and then its hasty and ill conceived, fraught with unintended consequences all too often. No wonder impatient folks turn to Communism, a so-called benevolent dictator, or even, God help us all, a Democrat.

Pistol
Some deep thinker, I forget which, once said, "When justice breaks down, violence will ensue."

Buck:
Yeah, term limits passed after FDR's death, but his endless presidency was the motivator, which was my point. Sorry I wasn't clear on my meaning.

Rah! Rah! Sis-boom-bah!
Is there any bigger cheerleader for the Republican Party than Lambro?

RNC finally gets it
Look, the Base of the Pubs has wanted the RNC et al to expose leftist pacifist socialists, the DNC and House and Senate Committee leaders for years. It has taken this long, but all is not lost. It is hard for me, a seasoned vet of politics to hear or read conservPubs who think losing an election is winning. That is nutter thinking and if the House and Senate go Dem, it will be a long season between 'purist conservs ' retaking the Congress. Memory? The House Dems ran the House for nearly 50 years between losses. The Senate was Dem country until Ike and then back to the same in the '70's as a result of the Nam loss. Pubs finally win in '94 and now some want the entire Party to go back into the wilderness to 'teach it a lesson'? What lesson? Out of power we grin and bear it like ole Bob Michel and Jerry Ford, Bob Dole and smiling Tip O'Neil condescending to the Pubs each House day? C'mon now, I lived and worked through those bad ole days. No more. I want Pub control even if rotten Senators like Linc live. Like Captain Kirk, I don't like to lose. I like to win. This Nov. we can win and do more for the conserv cause in power, if faltering, then out in the wilderness where if some posters understood real politics, nothing can be taken for granted in regaining power.

Ives,
I believe they called it rope-a-dope once upon a time in the boxing world and I believe your assessment is pretty accurate. Ohhhhhh that wiley Rove is something else, isn't he?

OK, so Dems are bad, blah blah
This column isn't quite as pathetic as the previous one about "micro" campaigns, but it still reeks. We know the Dems are horrible and that having them in power again would be a disaster. Many of our Mideast problems were invited by the spinelessness and fecklessness of Carter and Clinton, who now have the gall to criticize the present administration trying to clean up their mess.

However, we have reached the point where the GOP needs to start giving us reasons positively to support them, instead of basing their entire pitch on using the likes of Screechy Pelosi and Chappaquiddik Teddy as admittedly convincing and scary bogeymen. It is time to motivate the GOP to move forward affirmatively into conservatism instead of pandering to special groups. It is time we had some higher expectations and acted upon them. There is, for example, no excuse for the flood of horrifyingly bad legislation we continue to get from Congress, while long-overdue reforms languish.

Mr. Lambro, the GOP wasn't given majority status because the American electorate developed an elephant fetish. Tossing out the Dems was a positive good in itself, but this focus on little electoral strategies over principle cannot continue without a price being paid. The problem, as I'vbe said before, is that the only perceived threat or competition for the GOP is from the Left, therefore the GOP focuses its strategies upon pandering to an alleged "moderate" Left while ignoring the conservative base. They need competition and a credible threat from the right to motivate them to move right.
