U.K. terror plot vindicates Bush

Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WASHINGTON -- Prevention of the plan to destroy 10 jetliners bound for America has sharply boosted President Bush's approval scores for his handling of the war on terrorism and homeland security.

This week's improved poll numbers was a political justification of Bush's laser-like focus on the terrorist threat that his Democratic critics dismissed as fear mongering and campaign hysteria meant to frighten Americans into voting Republican.

But the Islamic bomb plot, uncovered by British intelligence, with the assistance of other countries, including Pakistan and the United States, was a chilling reminder the terrorist war is real and the jihadists' desire to kill as many of us as they can remains a central issue in the midterm elections. It was also a grim reminder that events in the next three months could swing this election in one direction or another. What if yet another plot, this time right here in the United States, is disclosed? What if Osama bin Laden is killed or captured?

Reporting the poll's findings, Newsweek's Marcus Mabry noted, "The most murderous terror plot to be publicly exposed since 9/11 disrupted more than air travel. It roiled public opinion, too."

The poll of more than 1,000 Americans still showed Bush's problems across a range of issues, including the Iraq war, but it also showed "a significant boost in voters' opinions of his handling of the terror threat." A hefty 55 percent majority now approve of Bush's handling of the war on terrorism and protecting homeland security, a big 11-point boost since May (40 percent still disapprove).

It also exposed the correlation between terrorist threats and the president's approval ratings. In the ebb and flow of competing issues in any election, voters sometimes need reminding when key issues fade or are shoved aside by other news events.

The sinister revelation that terrorists were planning to blow up passenger planes flying from Great Britain to the United States, and possibly from here to there, too, knocked competing stories -- from Israel's battle with Hezbollah to the war in Iraq -- off the nation's front pages.

Not only was the terrorist threat potent again and closer to home, but Americans were reminded of the steps Bush and the Republican Congress took to uncover and thwart that threat: the reauthorization of the Patriot Act (that Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid tried to kill), the surveillance of terrorist phone calls to sleeper cells in this country and the fed's monitoring of bank accounts used to finance terrorist plots here and abroad. Democrats and their left-wing, anti-war allies in the blogosphere (who have been condemning the administration's global surveillance techniques) seemed strangely silent on the issue this past week. I can see why.

The White House and Republicans are intent on making the threat of another terrorist attack the pivotal issue in an election that could turn on a single question: Which party will keep us safe?

If there was a common denominator in the Democrats' line of attacks this year, it was that Bush's policies in the war in Iraq and the war on terrorism have made us less safe. But the Democrats were losing that argument this week, as they have been losing it throughout most of this year.

The Newsweek poll found that 44 percent of Americans said they trusted Republicans "to do a better job handling the war on terrorism than the Democrats, versus 39 percent who say they trust the Democrats more."

Still, generic congressional polls show a majority of voters will vote Democratic in November, and Democrats are trying to make Bush and the Iraq war the central theme in their campaigns. But if the election turns on terrorism and who will keep us safe, the numbers could turn in the GOP's favor.

Last week's bomb-plot story, however, could fade and with it, possibly, concern about the ever-present terrorist threat. But high-level Republican strategists tell me they aren't going to let that happen. Bush and the GOP are planning to campaign on the issue aggressively from now until Election Day to keep it in front of the electorate. White House political strategist Karl Rove has made that decision clear to party leaders and to Republican candidates. It is the GOP's strongest national-security issue and clearly the Democrats' weakest. The only other question is, will the terrorists reignite this issue in the weeks and months to come? The chances are they will and, if so, the issue will come back to the fore with a vengeance.

In the 2004 presidential campaign, a New Jersey woman told a reporter she had always voted Democratic, but this time she was voting for Bush because of the terrorist threat. "There's no maybe in his voice," she said.

Her concern about the terrorists who threaten our way of life and about the Democrats' perceived softness on this matter could be the pivotal issue yet again when voters go to the polls on Nov. 7.

Priorities
It's more important to stop present threats than to hunt down perpetrators of past crimes. President Bush rightly is more concerned about present threats. I'm sure he will be happy when Osama is brought to justice. If the United States had a confirmed kill/capture of Osama I suspect you would find other ways to show your hatred of the United States and it's government. You have posted many times your distrust of the United States and you apparent trust of our enemies, except when our enemies, like Al Jazeera, confirm what the United States government says.

Polls, Schmolls
What was MOST telling in the article was the woman who said, "There's was no maybe in his voice."

Wish he were that clear about immigration... Oh, wait, he is...

Yes, I have a love/hate relationship with our President. I love and respect his handling of the WOT. Wish I could say the same about his handling of our border/port security. Can't understand WHY HE DOESN'T GET IT. He seems to do more for the UK security.

Popularity is for High School Girls
President Bush realized long ago what Daddy taught us (over Mama's objections): popularity is not the most important thing in life. Doing the right thing according to the evidence and your moral beliefs is the most important thing.

In a world of people who have to take a poll to find out if the country approves before they know if they have to pee, the President remains firm in his beliefs and his actions.

As Davy Crockett put it, "Be sure you're right -- then go ahead."

I like that in a President.

He ISN'T serious about it!
He goes all over the place talking about how Isreal has the right to defend her borders, and Iraq has the right to defend its borders, but he has a *responsibility* to defend OUR borders and he is NOT doing that, except in a token way, so as not to offend Mexico. An Afgan was cought crossing the border on Tuesday, and no one in his right mind thinks that guy is the first and only one who has tried, or that others have tried and succeeded.

What's wrong with this picture? WHY is he ignoring his oath of office?

If we have a dialogue with Islam
Some on the Left and many in Islam suggest America is creating terror with our aggression, imperialism, and support for Israel.

Here are some questions for the Left and Islam to answer:

1. Should we help Muslims kill all the Jews, just those in Israel, force them on some willing host country, or merely subject them to Islamic law?

2. Should we give Spain, parts of France, Greece (and other former lands once conquered by Islam) back to Islam and allow Muslim immigrants in places like England and the US to form separate countries?

3. What should India, Thailand, African Christians do to stop Islamic violence?

4. What do the Muslims in Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, etc. do to stop Muslim-against-Muslim terrorism?

tanabear,
I would love to know the context of that question posed to him in 2002; you know, who was asking and what their implication of the question was. The "but" at the beginning of the question raises my suspicions. It shows that a previously answered question did not meet with the reporters satisfaction, indicating that he or she is trying to elicit a specific response rather than gather the facts.

An awful many of the mainstream journalists have taken to implying, if not outright stating that, since he hasn't yet found Osama bin Laden, therefore his conducting of the war on terror is a fraud and a failure.

Try to imagine being in his shoes when being questioned by a largely partisan and hostile press corp and imagine trying to stay two steps ahead of them at all times while still maintaining your composure and dignity. And at the same time not transmit to the enemy any vital information.

He may not be a perfect president but try to imagine what the alternative might have been.

r0_d1
Remember H.L.Menken's famous saying, "Never underestimate the stupidity of the American people".

Watch his poll numbers skyrocket the next time a Islamic terrorist attack takes place on our soil. Sometimes we just won't get it until it touches us personally. In the meantime were too busy making money and listening to our Ipods while watching American Idol.

Meanwhile those who hate us and mean us harm are getting stronger and sharper.

WOT & libs/commies
The left will only support the war on terrorism if the islamo-fascists attack a communist system. Then, as in WWII when our military (coerced into defending Stalin from Hitler resulting in great losses of life) will Marx's Socialist Media (& Dems) applaud the efforts of our military.

r0_d1, please don't tell me...
that you're one of those who are so obsessed with hating George Bush that you cannot see the larger picture.

When Mr. Bush is out of office, the threat to our security will remain. It is to that reality that my comments are addresed and not to defending or detracting from this particular man's popularity.

But a cult mentality may have a hard time discerning that distinction. Might I suggest you re-examine your priorities if you are indeed one of those who think our problems began with and will end when Bush and the Republicans are out of office.

Bin Laden Marginalized Lives In a Cave?
It's unbelievable that a great deal of Repubs/Cons ACTUALLY believe this. Someone
below wrote this:

tanabear:

you keep beating the OBL issue like a dead horse.
Let me break it down to you.

HE HAS BEEN MARGINALIZED!

Dead or Alive who frigging cares?
He's been reduced to living like a rat in caves.

Studies don't change reality
Well, Bush's policies in Iraq *do* make us less safe. Jihad is quite popular now. It was not as popular five years ago. The London bombing plot probably would never have been conceived if it had not been for the US's recent pogroms against Muslims. There is only one thing that could come close to justifying Bush's policies in Iraq: Iraq could become a shining beacon and example of a free society: prosperous, tolerant, well-educated, blooming with innovation and a diverse civil society. And even that wouldn't really justify it, just as Japan's current success does not really justify the nuking of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. And anyway, even limited success is not on the visible horizon, given the destructive cycle we are in, started by the US and exacerbated by the Jihad craze.

And PS
If interception of the bombing plot really is responsible for an increase in Bush's approval rating, that is truly idiotic and very indicative of the American public's mentality. Bush did not intercept the plot; British police did.

rd01: I DONT believe it...lol
that was my point. It's unbelievable to me that
a great many Repub/Cons DO think that.

FEDERAL JUDGE HALTS NSA WIRETAPPING
Federal Judge Orders Halt to NSA Wiretapping

By Dan Eggen
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, August 17, 2006; 1:32 PM

A federal judge in Detroit ordered a halt to the National Security Agency's warrantless surveillance program, ruling for the first time that the controversial effort ordered by President Bush was unconstitutional.

U.S. District Judge Anna Diggs Taylor wrote in a strongly-worded 43-page opinion that the NSA wiretapping program violates privacy and free-speech rights and the constitutional separation of powers between the three branches of government. She also found that it violates a 1978 law set up to oversee clandestine surveillance.

Ruling in a case brought by the American Civil Liberties Union and other advocacy groups, Taylor, 73, wrote that "public interest is clear, in this matter. It is the upholding of the Constitution. . . . "

"It was never the intent of the framers to give the president such unfettered control, particularly where his actions blatantly disregard the parameters clearly enumerated in the Bill of Rights," she wrote. " . . . There are no hereditary Kings in America and no powers not created by the Constitution. So all 'inherent powers' must derive from that Constitution."

The ruling marks a significant setback for the Bush administration, which has aggressively defended the legality of the NSA program since its existence was first revealed in press reports last December. Dubbing it the "terrorist surveillance program," officials have said the effort allows the NSA to monitor telephone calls and e-mails to and from the United States without warrants when one party is suspected of ties to al-Qaeda.

The decision could also have an impact on Congress, which has for months been debating whether to limit or endorse the NSA program through legislation.

The Justice Department argued in court that the program is well within Bush's authority as president, but said proving it would require revealing state secrets. The ACLU argued that many details about the program had already been revealed by Bush and other government officials, and Taylor, who was appointed to the bench by President Bill Clinton, agreed.

"Today's ruling is a landmark victory against the abuse of power that has become the hallmark of the Bush administration," said ACLU Executive Director Anthony D. Romero. "Government spying on innocent Americans without any kind of warrant and without congressional approval runs counter to the very foundations of our democracy."

He called the ruling "yet another nail in the coffin of the Bush administration's strategy in the war on terror. . . . The judge very clearly points out that this, at its core, is about presidential powers."

USA spanish people deceived by Democrats
Street Actions by different people in USA allow seeing people that speaks Spanish as their preferred language, becoming more and more important as wealth owners, consumers, voters or future voters and pressure groups.

You can find in this groups: Enemies of USA and western civilization interested sponsors (*1) - Spanish culture persons trying to promote themselves as ethnical or cultural group leaders - drug traffickers lobbyists, and so; besides there is the mass (the many naive honest Spanish culture people) some of them do not read English o read it with a limited comprehension on medium deep politics, economics or science themes. This way that is a very comfortable sheep like mass of followers to any mass or social predator to profit.

Something has to be done to enlighten this people in order to prevent (vaccinate) them to become used inside or outside USA or another developed country, to damage social tissue and help interests like those of Arab terrorists, neo-communist terrorists, drug traffickers and any kind of social predators disguised as protectors of nature, of natives, poor freedom givers, underdevelopment doctors, etc. (*2)

Practical reasons lead to the rule that Spanish language use is a must in those proposed actions. Please do not confuse this with the wrong idea of making English, French or German speaking countries to create artificial bilingual administrations to stop the true integration or assimilation of immigrants; this kind of solution will make them dependent or servants of intermediates and scofflaw employers forever.

Even many of those people even speak and read English, some being US citizens for more than one generation, they are more accessible to some discussions and teaching in they first or family language.

Some useful thoughts developed (in high global Spanish) to be used in a closed family and friends circle can be used either directly or as a reference background to other actions.

There is no court in the world that has the authority to stop us from intercepting international communications.

Only an idiot or a traitor would advocate stopping it. Mental test: Pretend it is 1943. Do you intercept mail and phone calls from Hawaii to Tokyo? From NY to Berlin?

Liberals are mentally ill, there is no other way to look at it.

2fer judge
Oh yeah,

This is another example of how competence comes 2nd to agenda for the dems. The fact that she is an affirmative action 2fer has nothing to do with her getting a job that is obviously over her head?

Mr. Bush is not vindicated
The president is unfortunately not vindicated. This can only happen when those who disagree are willing to accept the results, his detractors will never concede this. Those of us who supported his efforts through clandestine surveillance operations have always understood the need, those with a pathological hatred of the man simply used those operations as a stick to both beat at him and whip up frenzy. There has been virtually no middle ground on this, as in so many other issues.

Polls, if they are believed, can be alarming at best and nightmarish at worst. To say 1000 people can in any form represent a cross section of the American public has always been suspicious to me.
No matter, the alarming part would be that 5% of the public seem to have no thoughts on the presidents handling on the war on terror, with 55% approving and 40% disapproving. If we say, for arguements sake, there are 200 million people in the US, and estimate 65% of the population is of voting age, this would mean that 5% represent 6.5 million people. 6.5 million who don't care. Most cities are not that large. Then when the question of who do they think does a better job of handling the war, Democreats or Republicans, 44% say Republicans and 39% Democrats. This leaves a 17% void. Using the same numbers above that is roughly 22 million people who either trust; the Green Party, the Independents or the Tooth Fairy, all three I am sure being equal.

The nightmarish part was the idea that somehow this whole experience and the tasks associated with it is a "key issue" that may fade from voters memories. Are we honestly that shortsighted or is it the polls are wrong? Again.

From Left Angle:
"The ruling marks a significant setback for the Bush administration,........."

Why do people insist of saying things like the above? Are they really morons? I think so.

It's a setback for "all Americans", for whom the Bush administration, Congress, and the Judicial departments work. Whether or not one voted fo GW, he is the current, elected (twice) U.S. President of ALL Americans.

Studies don't change reality
Malou writes just as Japan's current success does not really justify nuking Hiroshima & Nagasaki in 1945.

Wrong! Would you have rather seen a million marines, airmen, soldiers & sailors killed along with another million Japenese also killed?????? It was the right decision at the time. It ended the war!!!!!!!

DSMACK

NRAlifer
Do not misunderstand me, I have no loyalty to what passes for the Democratic party today. What once was the Democratic party was overthrown in 1972 by the McGovern movement and has self destructed from there. The party of my grandfathers, uncles and father is no more. When Howard Dean is your spokesman and the shining star is Nancy Pelosi you do not have a political party, you are witness to a circus.
I became what you would call a Reagan Democrat before Reagan was known for anything else but a twenty mule team, (this reference may show your age). Carter was a dismal failure, Ford would have been an exceedingly better choice but with the cloud of Water Gate hanging over the country the Democrats could have run Micky Mouse and won. And they did. And so it has been. It is not that I am uncomfortable being associated with the Republican party but being from the rural southwest I can feel my grandfathers both tremble in the ground as I walk into a voting booth. Then again, they were both good men, I think they would approve of my choices.

Sonny Lycos: Dont shoot the messenger.
I just posted the report. It was breaking news that I was kind of stunned by. I thought it would be interesting to Townhall residents. lol

Why do people say things like the quote you
mentioned?

I'd say it's partisan politics. Sure Bush is the President of the United States, but that doesnt mean every citizen supports his agenda or policies..far from it.

NraLifer: funny thing about Lieberman
is that Republicans are not supporting their candidate in that Conneticutt Senate race.

If Liberman wins as a independent, you repubs/cons need to think about the fact that even though he supports Bush on Iraq, on practically EVERY other issue, he is a LIBERAL..
who will more than likely still caucus with the democrats....we will see who gets the last laugh.

PS to NRAlifer
The only thing suprising about Mr. Lieberman is that it took so long for the cannibals to prepare the meal. I hope you are correct because he would be a great loss, even though fiscally he is liberal, defensively he is sane which is a quality the country can ill-afford to lose.

Lieberman caucus with the Democrats
Yes, I have heard of countless numbers of rape victims marrying their assailants.

NRALifer
Your 7:08 posting pretty much summed it up. One thing more:

The President needs to quit trying to blow smoke up the Americans' derrier by saying Islam is a 'Peaceful' religion. Islam is an army. We are at war with a religion that is an army. And that army is 1 Billion strong. And they are using the tactics of Total War while we dilly-dally around and listen to the subversives and let the politicians play at generaling and we are going to eff eue sea kay around and lose!

Taffy's Mom
Notice how the border thing has been put on the back burner and now is completely off the stove? I actually think the Republicans are glad the Mideast exploded so as not to have to deal with the border issue.

Malou
Truly indicative of American mentality is the fact that there is even a Democratic Party.

Rood and Lefty
Just got back from a biz trip to Lost Wages.

I could have sworn I saw OBL in the line for "Thunder from Down Under" at the Excalibur.

Malou! Haven't seen you in a while
I think from before the sire changeover.

Welcome back (even if I don't necessarily agree with you).

Brian

tanabear,
Thanks for clearing that up regarding the first question.

Also, you make a good point concerning his lack of resolve on the immigration issue which I agree with.

However I cannot take the rest of your post very seriously. It doesn't help your credibilty when you start your statements with "Bush is the one who hates America".

As for the WMD issue, my standard reply is always the same: If it were a Democrat president prosecuting this miltary action in Iraq (a la Clinton in Bosnia) can you seriously tell me that the nightly news programs would not still be telling us about the 17 UN resolution violations complete with pictures of dead Kurds and tales of torture and rape rooms? You get my point?

For the record, I do not think we should be in Iraq. But not for the reasons you might think. And certainly not for the talking points the mob are furnished with from the likes of George Soros and Co.

Now THERE'S a group who fit your description a little bit better than George Bush.

Wow - Malou rewriting history
Brian called it when he stated that the Hiroshima nuke saved lives. Rewriting history: We started it? Iran & terrorists have been attacking the US for over 30 years. They have been asking for war and may soon get it on their homeland rather than just thru proxies. Iran is the reason Iraq has not been successful. In any case, a backward society such as the islamic fundamentalist states retard growth and prosperity. Look how they treat their women.

We need to take out their leadership and the mad mullahs. Do it now before greater war. Someone should have done the same with Hitler and his core group.

Tanabear - An OBL Prediction
You find it hard to believe that people think OBL has been marginalized, but here's a prediction for you: If he is captured or brought to justice during the remainder of Bush's term, every lib pundit under the sun will be spinning that he has been marginalized for years and that his capture or killing is irrelevent (See Al Zarqawi) Further, they will declare that the timing is "suspicious" given whatever scandalgate-du-jour they have cooked up and/or imminent elections.

Do you really believe that the Administration and our allies are not doing everything in their power to find him now, or that more could be done if we hadn't liberated Iraq and Afghanistan? What do you suggest? Full scale invasions of Iran or Pakistan where he is likely hiding? It really is hard to take libs seriously.

It is also quite amusing to observe how reputedly nuanced liberals believe that capturing OBL is the singular component to the war on Islamo Fascist terror, which they deny exists in the first place (they don't really want to kill us, it's just Republican "fear mongering") Bush has engaged a multi-front war on Islamic extremism, including the removal of the Taliban, the elimination of the Baathist threat in Iraq, improving communications between security agencies and with our allies, working with the international community to contain Iran's nuclear ambitions, eliminating Libya's WMD threat, tracking and disrupting terrorist funding channels, disrupting terror plots by monitoring terrorist communications and increasing protection at home through the Patriot Act. Each and every one of these measures has been fought against tooth and nail by Democrats. No wonder the American people will never trust Democrats with national security.
