Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

The ostensible purpose of the war in Gaza is for Israel to wipe out Hamas and eliminate its capacity to rain rockets down on its citizens. Both the dovish leaders in the current Israeli government -- Prime Minister Olmert, Foreign Minister Livni, and Defense Minister Barak -- and the international diplomatic community want to get rid of Hamas and leave the more moderate Palestinian Authority as the sole negotiating agent for the Palestinians. So the Israeli attacks have not received the kind of international condemnation and vitriol that they usually attract.

But the real purpose of this war is to get Livni elected prime minister and defeat Bibi Netanyahu. It is no accident that after years in which 8,000 rockets have been fired from Gaza on Israel (3,000 in 2008 alone) that the Israeli government chose a moment six weeks before the Feb. 10 election to retaliate.

Livni and her likely coalition partner Barak need to show that they are tough enough to lead Israel. And the international community, desperate to avoid a Netanyahu government, is determined to let them.

But it won't work for one basic reason: Livni and Barak are weak compared to Netanyahu and won't bring the degree of force to bear necessary to accomplish their objective. Instead, they will wage the war with one eye on the international reaction and will pull the punches needed to bring Hamas to submission. They will not close the Gaza border to supplies, and they will cave in to demands to suspend the ground war long before it has silenced Hamas.

Livni and Barak will snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by giving up before final victory is achieved. And their obvious failure to persevere will be all Netanyahu needs to win the election.

After all, Livni, Olmert and Barak have set a very high standard for success. Having triggered the war in order to stop Hamas' rocket attacks, they cannot stop it and declare victory unless the attacks do, in fact, stop. Hamas cannot let Israel silence its attacks while it still breathes and has life.

So the attacks won't stop. With 1.5 million homes to hide in, the Israeli Army cannot hope to destroy every rocket and every launcher, and kill every terrorist. The attacks will continue, as they have continued, day after day, even during the invasion. And, faced with international pressure and the dissatisfaction war is causing in their internal party ranks, Livni and Barak will lose their gamble.

Barack Obama, for his part, has remained largely silent, declaring that America has "only one president at a time." But his silence is militated as much by his desire to see Livni get elected as by any support for Israel or reticence to speak out while Bush still serves. He needs Livni to win just as Bill Clinton needed the Labor Party and Shimon Peres to win while he was president.

If Israel is to be led by Netanyahu, Obama will be in perpetual conflict with the tough Israeli leader. He will constantly be constrained to try to hold Netanyahu back from military attacks on Iran and on Hamas and Hezbollah, and he won't bring Netanyahu to any negotiations until the Israeli leader feels he has a partner with whom to negotiate.

Netanyahu is not going to play the game of pretending that the emperor has clothes by believing that the Palestinian Authority represents anyone but itself. He will demand that the Palestinians show their interest in peace through negotiations by electing leaders who want to negotiate. Otherwise, land for peace will be DOA in the Israeli cabinet.

So it is in everybody's interest that Livni win, except for Israel's. Because Hamas and Iran represent real threats, not just phantoms, Israel will be ill served if the current demonstration of toughness leads them to elect doves for the next five years. Doves won't defeat terrorists.

Suicide Rockets
Hamas promises no more rockets, but not no more suicide rocket man. Read it at, http://stopthepresses2.blogspot.com/2009/01/we-promised-je ws-no-more-rockets-but.html

ALL WE ARE SAAAAAAYING...
Is give war a chance.......

Nothing new....
Same old, same old. Maybe this time....?

Pure rubbish
Pure rubbish! How did these two supremely insightful geniuses even get their tripe posted on Townhall.com?

That is right, M&M, such deep, discernment. It is a shame, a tragedy, that the entire world does not await your pronouncements! Then we would all know, not only exactly what is going on, but what to do about it also. I eagerly await further extrapolation of your analysis and solution to all problems in the Middle East.

Dick and Eileen...
Unfortunately, you called it right. The dovish Livni just agreed to a daily 3-hour cease fire to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza. They do not have the stomach to see the war through and have thus guaranteed the conflict will continue.

Humanitarian aide to Hamass
Israel has been letting supplies through to Gaza since the very day this started. You, real aid food, medicine, fuel, and ambulances. They don't so much as 3 minute cease fire for those things. They will put their three hours a day to good used by rearming and fixing their tunnels. THAT is their idea of humanitarian aide.

truce is madness
Truce never solved anything. It just postpones the inevitable and prolongs the misery.
All it does it give Hamas a chance to reorganize and regroup,to catch their breath, instead of them disorganized and on the run.Israel doesn't seem to have learned from it's Lebanon debacle.

To John
Okay, neighbor. You've claimed the article was 'rubbish'. Now show us WHY the article is rubbish. Refute it's assertions; reveal and correct its falsities. We'd LOVE to hear more.

Gaza, UN, EU, USA
Unfortunately, this conflict will not be resolved as long as Hamas is in Gaza. Every last Hamas operative should be rooted out and killed, and even then, Israel will still not have peace but at least may gain some respite from being rocketed and mortared on a daily basis.

Israel can't win with the UN or the EU. Eight yrs of conceding land for peace have resulted in nothing more than constant attacks from Hamas and other terrorists who have no intention of allowing Israel to have peace. The UN and EU have been silent the whole time except on the several occasions that Israel retaliated and then reserved their condemnation for Israel as opposed to the perpetrators of terror and death.

The UN has turned into a pro-Islamic, Anti-Israel and Anti-US organization that kow-tows to thugs like Ahmadinajihad, Hugo Chavez, and the Castro Brothers. The only reason the US should even remain a member of this body is to keep track of what the UN Thugs are up to.

To Ernest
Hamas is not a splinter off Palestinian Arab society, it is a integral branch of it. The only way to get Hamas out of Gaza is to either kick the Palestinian Arabs out or to kill militants so habitually and constantly over a period of decades, that their cause becomes discredited among the Palestinian Arab population as a whole.

Now, given the utter lack of humane treatment that the Palestinian Arab refugees received from their Muslim brothers in Egypt, Jordan, etc, kicking them out would be little short of a death sentence. I couldn't hold with that. But if the Palestinian Arab commitment to indiscriminate, homocidal violence is to be broken, Israel must be allowed to pursue its incursions into Gaza with a fairly free hand. The world will not accept that.

Netanyahu
To paraphrase Patton, if that magnificent SOB (Netanyahu) gets elected - and hopefully the Israelis are smart enough to do so - he will take the necessary steps to eliminate Hamas and Hezbollah and eliminate Iran's potential to build nuclear weapons. Short term pain will insure long-term survival. This is the middle-east's only option for stability in the long run.

One thing
for sure, the Israelis, unlike U.S. voters will have a clear choice, between weak spined, lilylivered liberal progressive twits and a
LEADER with spine. What a contrast if Bibi is elected between him and what we have been
forced to put up with, and the Israeli's at least are sure Bibi is an Israeli citizen. At least the Israeli's will know they have a leader that will take no quarter and will defend and protect them with
everything he's got. There will be no if's ands or buts with Bibi..you know this could get to be entertaining watching Bibi run circles around O.

Wouldn't it be super?
Netanyahu elected and Israel actually on a path to self protection and preservation? I just think it is sad that the radical Arab world is willing to use the Palestinians as their sacrificial offering to make their political statements. Palestinians don't get real help from the Arab world like some non-controversial land to call their own or financial help for food and housing instead of putting guns and missles in their ignorant, illiterate, barbaric hands. Palestinians should feel used and insulted.

Ernest, Hal, RonC
From your lips... Israel needs to do a once for all. Ugly - yes. Worth the sacrifice - ask the Israeli citizens.

Palestinians
Palestinians = Sacrificial Rope a dopes.

The rest of the Arab world is content to see the Palestinians get pummeled.

They are happy to have Israel waste their time and energy on a race of people that they have no regard for.......

With the expectation that Israel will tire from the fight, and seek a truce.....which would be trumpeted globally as a "win" for the Islamofacists and dishonor for the Israelis.

A broken record.......

To Hal
I reckon that anti-Jewish violence is so ingrained in Palestinian Arab society (and Hamas IS an integral part of mainstream Pal Arab society) that it would take decades of heavy killing to cause disillusionment and rejection of it. But I agree that no improvement is possible apart from Israel either being given the latitude to kill militants en masse, or else the Arabs finally murdering every Jew (man, woman, or child) who won't leave.

I know which I'd prefer to see happen. At least the Israelis recognize the laws of war and investigate/punish infractions; the Palestinian Arabs *deliberately* target noncombatants.

To Granite Eagle
Agreed. Who first occupied the West Bank and Gaza and denied the Palestinian Arabs any say in their own government? Jordan and Egypt. While Israel accepted and integrated 800,000 Jewish refugees who had been evicted from Muslim nations, who kept the Palestinian refugees confined in pens, kept in line with machine guns, and living in squalor for the propaganda value? Their Arab brethren.

The hell with the rest.
It’s really funny but I actually agree with Morris on this one. I also believe that the reason we do not have peace in Israel is the same reason we do not have peace in Iraq, we both have leaders who are not willing to take the gloves off. We both have leaders who are afraid of what the international community thinks, me I only care about the lives of our and our allies’ brave men and woman who are fighting this war. I say the hell with the rest.

The U.N. School
Notice that reports of Israel bombing a U.N. school, such as in the Washington Post, uniformly condemn Israel. However, no one condemns Hamas for using the school as a base of military operations, thus putting civilians at risk. This biased reporting and opinion gets old pretty fast.

McSame2008
Wicki, the idiot's encyclopedia! Now that you have dug up dirt on mister Morris, what the hell does it have to do with his ability to analyze political events? Hmmmmnn must of attended a liberal moral equivalency modern school did ya?

I find the pretty toes of the my wife damned attractive time to time. At least as a starting place.

HKC

It Is Beyond Comprehension..
..that anyone can criticise Israel. Any one of the rockets fired by Hamas had the potential to kill innocent Israelis who are living where they do by Gods will. It is purely by his will that so few Israelis have been killed. America only acts with benevolence and in the interests of mankind so he fact they are on the side of Israel speaks volumes. The only reasonable course of action is the internment or eradication of the so called Palestinians. I just wish Thatcher had shown such fortitiude against the IRA and their supporters both home and abroad and we might actually have peace in NI.

Stealing Elections...
Mr. Morris,
I receive your emails, but(little off today's topic) if you are concerned that Franken is stealing the Mn.election, should YOU be contributing to the GOP lawyers, instead of asking me in the email? You/your wife have alot more money than I, and since I am just SO disgusted w/MY party-The GOP, who act like a bunch of wimps, and pinatas that get beat up on a daily basis, let them learn from the "fight'n
Dems"-who circle the wagons around their guilty
fellow Dems(Rangle, Reid, Dodd, Frank, etc.-and
TOTALLY IGNORE THE WIMPY RANTS OF THE GOP. They
have conflicts of definite interest: Hillary, w/
Bill on the financial take from EVERYONE, but now she is going to be vaulted to Sec.of State-
dealing w/the very "contributors to the Clinton's personal coffers"---and, the GOP does NOT make a big stink about this??? Give us a break, and light a fire under the Wimpy GOP, and
for myself-I don't want a party like this, so I will be joining the Independent Party in the future, as I don't want to be in a party like my
prior one, who "JUST ROLLS OVER, AND TAKES ALL THE ABUSE AND DIRT THAT THE LIB DEMS THROW AT THEM, ALL THE WHILE THE GOP TURNS TAIL AND HIDES. SO MR. MORRIS, IF YOU TRULY FEEL (AS I DO INCIDENTALLY) THAT FRANKEN(W/AID OF DIRTY DEMS, AND THE SOCIALIST, SOROS-WHO IS BRINGING AMERICA TO HER KNEES)IS STEALING THE ELECTION,
PUT "YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS, AS WELL AS GETTING THE WORD OUT ON HANNITY AND ANY OTHER SHOW YOU CAN GET ON". I AM PERSONALLY DISGUSTED
WITH "ALL THE POLITICO PIGS, THAT FEED AT THE PUBLIC TAXPAYING TROUGH".

War Crimes
It sounds like the UN allowed it's schools in Gazastan be used as military positions. It seems to me that the Israelis should be giving some UN officials their last smoke and a blindfold.
