Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Many political campaigns run against the wrong candidate. The opportunity to pick on a vulnerable target is so tempting that they are lured into attacking someone who isn’t running. In 1992, the Republicans unleashed their convention barrage at Hillary and left Bill unscathed. In 1996, Dole still ran against Clinton the liberal and ignored the changes in his political positioning. Campaigns go after the flaming red cape, so glittering a target, and leave the matador alone.

That’s what the Democratic convention has been doing in Denver. They are so anxious to run against Bush, their animosity is so pent up, that they persist in running against a man who is not seeking a third term. In speech after speech, the Democrats knock the Bush record and then add, lamely, that McCain is the same as Bush. Or they call the McCain candidacy Bush’s third term. It was no accident — or Freudian slip — when Joe Biden spoke of John Bush instead of George in his litany of attacks.

This pattern of shooting at the decoy, not the duck, gives McCain a bold strategic opportunity. He can nullify the impact of the entire Democratic convention simply by distancing himself from Bush.

The truth is, of course, that McCain is the most unlike Bush of any of the Republican senator. (When Obama’s people claim that Bush and McCain voted the same 94 percent of the time, they forget that most of the votes in the Senate are unanimous.) The fact that McCain backs commending a basketball team on its victory doesn’t mean that he is in lockstep ideologically with the president.

The issues on which McCain and Bush differ are legion:

* McCain fought for campaign finance reform — McCain-Feingold — that Bush resisted and ultimately signed because he had no choice.

* McCain led the battle to restrict interrogation techniques of terror suspects and to ban torture.

* McCain went with Joe Lieberman on a tough measure to curb climate change, something Bush denies is going on.

* McCain opposed the Bush tax cuts when they passed.

* McCain urged the Iraq surge, a posture Bush rejected for years before conceding its wisdom.

* McCain favors FDA regulation of tobacco and sponsored legislation to that effect, a position all but a handful of Republican senators oppose.

* McCain’s energy bill, also with Lieberman, is a virtual blueprint for energy independence and development of alternate sources.

* After the Enron scandal, McCain introduced sweeping reforms in corporate governance and legislation to guarantee pensions and prohibit golden parachutes for executives. Bush opposed McCain’s changes and the watered-down Sarbanes-Oxley bill eventuated.

* McCain has been harshly critical of congressional overspending, particularly of budgetary earmarks, a position Bush only lately adopted (after the Democrats took over Congress).

Remember that McCain ran against Bush in 2000.

McCain’s Republican advisers need to realize that they won the primary and that they do not need to cotton to the delegates at their convention or to appease the Bush White House. The more they respond to Obama’s and Biden’s attacks on Bush by saying, “It ain’t me, babe,” the more he will moot the entire purpose of the Democratic convention.

It is a rare opportunity to nullify the entire Democratic line of attack, and McCain should seize on it.

"The only way the bonds will have value is if politicians use a separate tax to take more money from us and use that to replace them."

Well, yeah. The bonds are essentially a promise that, if they can use the money for current general expenditures now, they'll repay it (plus interest) from general revenue when it becomes necessary. No "separate tax" is needed.

"The Dementocrats ... took the money from SS and spent (wasted) it."

In fact, a great deal more of the SS trust fund has been spent during Republican administrations. Bush has spent huge amounts of it, something like four times as much as was spent during the Clinton administration.

"A lot of the money SS sent out this month was taken from workers last month."

Of course; all of it, in fact. That's how it's supposed to work. However, since SS is currently taking in more money than it pays out (and will be doing so until at least 2019), the excess goes into the trust fund. And is spent to pay for the huge expansion of government since 2001.

Yes, I surely would have loved to be that fly-on-the-wall when Missus C heard the news!!! Most entertaining, it would have been. (Did you see this coming? I know we've had discussions about Obama's potential VP (about which I was wrong and you were right as I recall).

I rather imagine Missus C. had accepted the fact for this year, but it really puts a (potential) fly in her 2012 ointment, doncha think?

By the way, I heard Geraldine Farraro say that Gov Palin's nod to her was the FIRST time a woman had publicly acknowledged her contribution. The reporter said "surely Mrs. Clinton did..." Ferarro replied,"No, never publicly." Interesting.

American #17
Those special treasury bonds are already worthless. The Dementocrats (borrowed term) took the money from SS and spent (wasted) it. The only way the bonds will have value is if politicians use a separate tax to take more money from us and use that to replace them. A lot of the money SS sent out this month was taken from workers last month.

Might Makes Right #12: A reason to prefer McCain over Hussein is the 47 TRILLION DOLLARS in new taxes the Dims are already trying to impose on us, The People who pay all taxes.

Is your implication that the voters of the South and the Midwest, at least conservative voters, won't vote for a Republican ticket with a woman on it? If so, I think you're TOTALLY wrong in that assumption, given that the South has or has had PLENTY of Republican women in our national legislature as of late (Kay Bailey Hutchison, Sue Myrick, Anne Northup, need I go on?).

Hail Mary!
Old pol Biden characterized Palin nomination as a "hail Mary pass." Though intended as an insult the remark was spot on and a compliment to McCain. For in the normal political tides this election was to be a Dem shoo-in given discontent with the economic downturn and drawn-out inconclusive war. So regular Dem pols such as Ed Rendell saw it- and wanted reliable Clinton to close the contest in short order. He hadn't counted on the strange and sinister Obama phenomenon. He did as consolation get the Biden sidekick but who usually cares about a VP? But now with McCain's Hail Mary pass to Palin the Reps have a real chance.

Who imposed an Obama on what regulars deemed to be a smoothly functioning national Democratic machine? No doubt black influentials were among them - African-Americans being essential Dem voters. But wealthy media and entertainment industry magnates were prime movers - hence "youth," "glamour," etc. (In fact it's the old not the young who are growing in number.) And the trans-Atlantic financiers for whom the country's center is "fly-over country." These media money-men took over the Dem leadership from the professionals. So with skill McCain-Palin might, just might pull it off.

Who Cares?
Hey, Standshisground:

Why would getting Hillary upset with the GOP VP pick matter? We're trying to win an election here. While I would certainly get a kick out of raising Hillary's blood pressure, what does this matter in the grand scheme of things? Old "Johnny Maverick" just threw away the South and Midwest with his pick. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

"Second, you do realize when those special [Social Security trust fund] treasury bonds will expire don't you?"

Treasury bonds don't expire. Where do you people get stupidity like this?

Under the current system, the trust fund will cease to grow in 2019, start to shrink, and run out in 2042, when it will no longer be available to make up the difference between taxes coming in and benefits going out. Obama is planning to modify the cap on FICA wages, currently $102,000, such that those making over $250,000 a year pay an additional 2%-4%. That solves the problem; the shortfall will never occur.

Wouldn't you have loved to be a fly on the wall where Hillary was after hearing that McCain chose Sarah Palin as his running mate? I sure hope that Bill was anywhere close, because if there had been anything within arm's reach of Hillary that would have made a suitable projectile, I'll bet she'd have been throwing it at him!

For Hillary, this has to be the twist of the knife after it's been plunged into her. She thought SHE was going to be the female candidate on a presidential ticket!

The 2008 campaign just got a whole lot more fun. I can hardly wait!

shrillary
Yes he did. She would have too if she wasn't so wishy washy, financially irresponsible, and inevitable. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V47-HRJUxmM . HRC insisted on shooting herself in the foot with a machine gun.

As for Dick, he's one of the best pundits out there imho.

Baseballdoc: where was Morris?

Wasn't he also the man who predicted that Shrillary would end up as Prez?

Baseballdoc: Sarah Palin

Woo-Hoo! I think she is a great choice for McCain's running mate.

Here is a link to a UTube Vid of Governor Palin discussing drilling in Alaska:

IT LOOKS LIKE PALIN

.....If the rumor is true then it is the first good news I have had to cheer about since McCain was nominated ...I didn't think McCain was smart enough to select Palin because she is the perfect choice ...

.....Where were you on this one Morris? .....COLOSSUS

Tear It Asunder
In a NUT-shell the Lib platform has made their BDS the central theme for nominating/electing a NOVICE Senator to the Most Powerful Position in the world. It will NOT WORK!

McCain is to GWB as Barak is to Jesus.

Jimmy Carter claiming that McCain is "MILKING" his Military service & POW status is not only blatantly false BUT also INSULTING! If the Libs are trying to attract moderate voters, letting Carter bat leadoff with a statement like that is a HUGE mistake.
One can only wonder what the rest of their line-up, Kerry, Durbin, Pelosi etc. will say to one-up the former failed President.

It is going to be a LOT easier for the McCain Campaign & the as yet 'undecided voters' to tie the FAILED Dem Led Congressional Leaders & their obstructionist policies (7 DOLLAR A GALLON GAS ANYBODY?) to Barak Hussein Obama than it will be for them to link GWB to John Sidney McCain! FACTS DON'T LIE!

Pelosi has a substantial investment in T.Boone's 'wind energy plan'.
BHO's National Campaign Chair Tom Daschel serves on the Boards of THREE ETHANOL Companies!!Obama flying on corporate jets, at least two owned by Archer Daniels Midland, the Nations LARGEST Ethanol Producer.
And you wonder why we are being told we CAN'T DRILL!!!

It is going to be a LOT easier to link Obama to Rev's Jerry Wright & Ed Pfleger!! To tie him to Louis Farakhan, Jim Cone & Black Liberation Theology. Tony Rezko & the CORRUPTION of the Chicago Political Machine. Etc.

I say - bring it on Libs! BRING IT ON!!!

W/O=

How does this make him attractive?
I tallied up Morris’ laundry list of contrarian positions taken by Johnny Mac against Bush. He (McCain) got two out of nine right – pushing the surge and opposing earmarks. On the other seven he was indistinguishable from a Democrap; in other words, as wrong as wrong can be.

Remind me again why I should be excited about this guy.

The great seer - Dick Morris
Alas, Dick Morris's ability to
see into the future is somewhat suspect after hearing him say for months that it was a given that the nominees would be Hillary and Condoleesa. Seriously Dick seems to be less "plugged in" than any other guy who has a paying gig writing articles for a blog - even a Right Wing blog.

I keep hearing...
...about how the center is where elections are won.

In order to get to the center, McCain needed to move slightly to the right.

For Obama to get there, he had to run over the people who have been his base. He also ran over Hillary's people, who are closer to center than most of us conservatives like to admit.

'Tis true, when you see interviews with the lefties Obama has abandoned, they all say,"He's just doing that to get elected; he'll come back to his roots once he wins."

But I hold great hope that the various groups Obama has alienated will recognize that somebody who cheats on you during the engagement is likely to cheat on you after the wedding.

And just to defuse the inevitable comments about cheating, McCain is at least able to 'fess up and admit his mistakes. Obama seems incapable of admitting a mistake.

Bush as a pinata

The Democrats are going to eat there words after Bush is know longer President. The lies
told by the left and the slanderous ways they delivered them, will come back to haunt them in future elections.
Bush made mistakes, but not half as bad as Carter and Clinton.

3 Things...
"You realize that it's the Republicans doing that, right? The Democrats think that social security will be just fine pretty much the way it is."

This is wrong on two points: first, Republicans will talk to those that are "paying" for SS; the Democrats will get one of their biggest contributors, AARP, to talk to seniors.

Second, you do realize when those special treasury bonds will expire don't you? Do you think the loss of wage growth and gap in earnings will be as kind in the future as when Greenspan headed that commission in 1983 to fix SS the first time?

Naturally, the Democrats think they should leave SS alone: they treat SS like they do "Full Faith and Credit" for our treasuries, as they'll just tax the hell out of us to cover the deficit SS has run up.

Finally, all McCain will need to do to put a dent in Obama's speech next week will be to say what Obama "didn't" say with regard to his platform.

McCain strategy
McCain could use Obama'a speech against him. Showing how Obama can't be trusted. Obama is misrepresenting the statements of McCain. Therefore, he is misleading the people on the truth. If he does that during a speech, what will he do if he gets in the WH? Will he mislead the American people? Yes he will.

Show old footage of McCain banging.....
....Bush during the previous election. It would be real material and no surprise to Bush but a big surprise to the Dem Wits.

Reagan & Clinton
whether we compare them or not philosophically.. one thing they could do is look into the camera and talk to someone. FDR began with fireside chats talking to the nation thru radio. Obama's oratory is matchless these days-- soaring rhetoric moves people to tears... but what Reagan & Clinton could do Obama did not... can he? I don't know. But McCain can make up for his great lack of oratory if he simply looks thru the camera and talks to us. It doesn't have to be great but he needs to talk to the people watching. Our president needs to talk to us.

My voter registration card has nothing but NPA on it... I had a chance to change it and I didn't. I have been trying to get my family to accept McCain since last Thanksgiving because I thought he was the best one this time around.

I appreciate that
look, I thought it was a geat speach too. I was trying to give an honest assessment because I thought that if Obama would have made an emotional connection with his viewers, he would basically be impossible to stop. basically, I think he missed out en a big opportunity with viewers at home... a personal touch would have made people feel like they connected with him in a personal way... but the speech was great otherwise. It is really impossible to say that it wasn't.

As for McCain I think that he would actually be a much better president than Bush... one of the the things I am most disappointed with is that he didn't control spending. I have been out of the counrtry for the past couple years and when I returned he was a lame duck... i don't hate anybody and I am really fascinated by politics especially at this point in our history,.

i think it is great that there is an African American on the ticket for the fist time. It makes me proud of our country to see this... I don't like his politics though.. can't help that..

shortsighted socialists
If you do not understand the importance of winning in the Middle East you should not post your stupid thoughts here. Winning in Afghanistan and Iraq is of the utmost importance. Remember, Democracies do not start wars, invasions or aggressions; it is the role of totalitarian regimes.
The more democracies are built in the world the better for the United States and the world.
Of course, we need smart and effective strategy to achieve this goal with minimum resources and low budget and, ideally, without American and civilian casualties. As much as I do not like McCain I have to admit that he understands this better than Bush and much much better than the new idol on the block Barak Obama.

The more McCain
distances himself from Bush....the better...I agree with Mr. Morris....it will take alot of starch out of the Demorats argument....I could'nt believe the tears of gullibilty at that convention speech...it was surreal watching the audience....alot of fanfare over absolutely nothing....Historic?...What's so historic about a politician saying the same things from years past?....I'll be watching to see if McCain takes advantage of it sometime...He's over in Dayton today to make his VP selection....hope he does not pull a knucklehead!

You sound like a middle of the road guy
what was your opinion?

McCain vote with Bush 90% of the time
Dick, I used to respect your articles, but they have just become as blind as most conservative bloggers. McCain is confused because he wants the conservative vote and the independent vote. But the conservative support led by the radio guys pushed McCain to adopt Rove and Bush's tactics. In the eyes of the electorate, McCain = Bush.

you're right
Did Frank Luntz do a poll on that one tonight too?

That's fine
I saw what I saw

Obama speech
Must have been great from the floor...
From my living room he oviously was talking to me, he never looked into the camera where the countless millions were watching, and when he did it was always very brief with an intense look in his eyes and he was yelling.

GunnyG© 10:46 PM EST
"The economy grew at 3.3%"

A big chunk of that was dumping $100 billion into the economy in tax rebates. One quarter of higher growth brings Bush's average growth up to maybe 2.65%, not especially impressive compared to Clinton's average over his term of 4%.

"The doom and gloom party is left with scaring old people about their social security!"

You realize that it's the Republicans doing that, right? The Democrats think that social security will be just fine pretty much the way it is.

Carlos
Great post.

The economy grew at 3.3% and the surge crushed the enemy. Victory at home and in Iraq.

The doom and gloom party is left with scaring old people about their social security!

McCain was a thorn in Bush's ....
Absolutely - McCain has the ammo to refute that for two speeches. It's true especially if he picks a vp like Lieberman or Palin.

With the latest economic news and success in Iraq - Obama is running out of things to whine about.
