Poll
Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Yes. Certainly. Absolutely. Undoubtedly. She can. In fact, Hillary, even in defeat, demonstrated the viability of a female candidate for president.

Hillary lost because she is Hillary and because she was outsmarted by Obama. She lost despite being a woman, not because of it.

In the early going, before Obama began seriously to challenge her, Hillary was winning easily in all the national polls. There was, indeed, a sense of inevitability to her impending triumph. This consensus was not illusory; it was based on solid polling data and very real advantages she had at the time in funding, name recognition, field organization, and political momentum. Hillary lost because of a myriad of factors, none of which had to do with being female:

1. She unwisely predicated her campaign her experience credentials. In a Democratic primary, particularly with its aversion to the dynastic interchange of Bushes and Clintons, change, not experience was the sine qua non. By stressing experience to an electorate that wanted change, Hillary badly misjudged the mood of the electorate.

2. Obama shrewdly realized that, since he might lose some of the contests in big states like New York and California, he needed to raise his money from sources that would not implode as his chances of victory seemed to ebb. So the Illinois Senator exploited his star power and charisma to raise money online from individual donors contributing small amounts. By the end of the primary season, he had amassed more than one million separate donors. Because of the financial independence this afforded him, Hillary could not score a first round knockout after she won the big Super Tuesday states. Obama survived to win eleven straight caucuses and primaries in mid size states.

3. Hillary focused too much on television advertising to develop a mass voter base in the primaries and not enough on the field organization she needed to get the warm bodies essential to carrying caucuses. By cultivating university students, in particular, Obama was able to beat Hillary in caucus after caucus, eroding the lead her primary victories had given her.

4. Faced with the need to substantiate her claims to experience, Hillary blundered and committed a series of gaffes in which she demonstrably overstated her role in events that ranged from th3e Irish peace process to the economic recovery to the resolution of the Bosnian civil war. Already beset by doubts about her integrity, spawned by two decades of scandal, Hillary’s credibility was shredded by these mistakes.

But, despite these shortcomings, Hillary showed that a woman could draw the votes of downscale, often sexist, white men. In the her late primary victories in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indian, West Virginia, and Kentucky, Hillary won, not only by securing the votes of women of all ages, but by getting the backing of high school educated white men, formerly the toughest nut for a woman candidate to crack. Of course, she was helped along by the racism of many of these voters, catalyzed by the ravings of Reverend Wright. But the fact remains that she won these votes over a male opponent, something women candidates were not supposed to be able to do.

And, in the process, Hillary shattered a number of other myths that pundits had once cited to show that women couldn’t win. She raised a prodigious amount of money, a sharp contrast to the enforced parsimony which had afflicted so many female candidates in the past. She was never seriously challenged for not knowing her substance on key issues. Her demonstrably high intelligence and familiarity with the facts made it clear that she was substantively qualified to be president, a far cry from the “airhead” label that had frequently been affixed to women running for office. And she allayed fears that a woman could not be an effective commander-in-chief. Almost all the polls showed that more voters trusted her than Obama on issues of defense, national security, and terrorism.

Of course her campaign demonstrated pitfalls for future female candidates to avoid. Voters were quicker to draw negative conclusions about Hillary’s personality than they likely would have been had she been male. Concerns that she was “cold” or “unemotional” or “robotic” surfaced early in the polling, while candidates like Mitt Romney, who, arguabley, could have been subject to similar criticism, were not.

But most important, Hillary demonstrated the power of women voters to elect a female candidate. Her top heavy margins among upscale women and her strong performance among their downscale sisters, showed that women can get the female vote and use it as a platform from which to win.

After all, if we discount the February primaries and caucuses in which Hillary was caught flat-footed and out of money (because she assumed Obama would be knocked out on Super Tuesday), the New York Senator clearly outdrew Obama and would have captured the nomination easily.

The lesson is clear: Being a woman is not a handicap in running for president. It is, rather, a priceless asset. It is not, however, enough by itself to assure victory.

Maggie Thatcher, where are you?
If a quality conservative woman turns up, I will vote for her with enthusiasm.

How about a reincarnation of Margaret Thatcher, for example?

But there are few people, let alone women, that have the qualities that would make a good President of the United States.

In general, I think it is hard for women to be great leaders.

To start with, they don't have the voice for it. When women try to raise their voices and sound strong, they usually sound like shrill harpies instead. I think this as true for conservative women as much as liberal woman.

Maggie Thatcher worked hard to keep her voice in a lower register and to PROJECT her voice, rather than hollar to make herself heard.

I remember cringing at Kiera Knightly's speech in the third Pirates movie, when she was trying to rally the "troops" ala Henry V, Aragorn or Brave Heart.

As she tried to raise her voice above the crowd, all that came out was an unpleasant screech, and all the beautiful words that were written for her to say made no difference.

This is the same problem that Shrillary has (hence her nickname), as do most women who seek public office.

Nancy Pelosi, as repugnant as her politics are, refrains from squawking, though she did err in having a face lift that makes her look like a dog with its face out the window at Nascar speeds.

The "razing" of voices
I think Mountain Rose has a valid point about the screeching and shrill voices of women and how necessary it is for them to avoid that pitfall. A good speech therapist and practice can teach one how to project the voice and control the pitch. I am a fitness instructor, and before we had microphones for our classes that were taught in a full size gym, we had no alternative but to project our voice, avoid irritating the participant and get our "point" across. "No pain in this refrain, Jane!"
I've listened to several class participants tell me that they will drop out of a fitness class if the instructors voice is too irritating. Now that we have microphones, modulating pitch, tone and decibals is absolutely essential, especially in a class with seniors who are likely to have hearing aids and high sensitivity to high pitched pontifications.
Now for the "razing" of Nancy Pelosi with her face lift "makes her look like a dog with its face out the window at Nascar speeds." Can I use that line in my fitness classes Mountain Rose? It sounds like a sure-fire laugh line to me, especially among the seniors who seem to have a superb sense of humor.

Listen to Martin Dooley
The great sage said, "Politics ain't beanbag, and women, children, and invalids should stay clear of it."

Instead of electing women who try to mimic men in their appearance, voices, and mental traits, let's just elect men to begin with. True feminine traits are dangerous and counterproductive in politics and war. Only when times get easy do we get lax and allow unfeminine, power-hungry women into the game, and we will regret it. Two thousand years ago the Romans wrote of the disgrace and foolishness of men allowing themselves to be ruled by women, and nothing in human nature is any different today.

Women, real women that is, not harridans like Hillary or Pelosi, have their own sphere of life, and a very important one. They civilize men, pass on culture, and create and nurture the next generation. They give men something to live and work for. They do not belong in politics, nor does a real woman want to be a politician.

We are fools today. The feminization of our politics, our society, and our military will be our undoing yet.

Mountain Rose
The cackle didn't help, either. It was disgusting.S he gave the aura of inevitability and that was not attractive.

All in all,I think she did as well as any Democrat could after the Pied Piper came from Trinity. He charmed the crowds. Put them in a swoon just like the lemmings in the fairy tale.

As soon as the leftist news media saw he was even more liberal than Hillary, they took him as their own. They have overlooked his gaffes and made excuses for his lies and kicked Hillary to the curb.

He!l hath no fury like a woman scorned. Double the fury when you toss in Bill. I think they have a plan. No towel has been thrown.

I am counting on them to do what McCain hasn't the stomach to do. Payback is he!l,I always heard. Bring it on !!

gayle
I am happy whenever my words (which I hope to be occasionally witty) are used by others.

I don't have the discipline to write for a living, so dropping one liners is all I can manage.

Thanks for the compliment!!!

Rowly
I suspect that the Shrillster has some more tricks up her sleeves. She is sucking up to Obama, hoping for the #2 seat, hoping (or knowing) that there is a real scandal around the corner that will make Barak step down.

Could it be the rumors that Obama was born outside the USA are true?

Perhaps some political scandal from Chicago (where, according to Malone from the Untouchables, the city stinks like a wh0r&house at low tide) will surface?

Only time will tell.

Hillary really gone?
I just can not see this woman walking away. And as for that so called "unity" group hug, whatever it was last Friday did nothing to make me believe their is "unity."

I did not support Hillary, but I gave her credit the last few months of the primary. She really got out there and fought extremely hard. I feel that Bill was not the asset she thought he was going to be either.

In the beginning, she had the assumption that she was going to be the nominee. If I recall the early polls showed her leading the Democrats and Giuliani leading the Republicans. Amazing how much can change in a decade. Excuse me a year. That primary just seemed to go on and on and on and on....

Mountain Rose enjoyed your post.

subject for dickie
why, ite dick morris and he is writing about hillary clinton again,. absolutely amazing . will wonders never cease?

Dick and Eileen assumptions
These two typify the US coastal mentality that without a "higher" education citizens MUST be sexist, racist, bigot, homophobe, pick an insult. Or to translate, what they THINK a conservative is VS a liberal. Obviously they are so wrong, but that won't change how they look their noses down at those "less than", like Hillary does.
Of course poster #6 your comments don't help matters. While you have some good points I don't agree with you. Certain feminization of society is damaging, esp. the anti--men feminist attitudes which have no place in serious governing.
Back to Hillary, being female in the eyes of the liberal media was indeed a priceless asset, because she wasn't challenged about substance on key issues.
I laughed when Morris mentioned "Her demonstrably high intelligence and familiarity with the facts...". Well, that's debatable!
Also...women's voices. A voice needs to be lower and projecting to command attention. You learn that when you own a dog, for crying out loud! Requiring such is not sexist. Sheesh.
The only kudos I have for Hillary is her tenacity. But she was bordering on bratty.

my 2 cents
On occasion I have an attack of what the experts call "conspiracy-theoryitis" and those same experts advise me to just get it out and get over it so here goes.

Hillary has something juicy on bo and is waiting to drop the bomb. She is waiting for two reasons 1) she wants to let enough time pass for her to distance herself so 2) she can find a way to blame the republican hate machine for the revelation.

That is why she is holding on to her delegates. As for the supers, bless their pea pickin' little hearts, when Hillary drops the bomb on bo they'll abandon him and come scurrying back to camp hillary.

And THEN we'll all live happily ever after.

Don't say I didn't warn you.

one more thing
Good points made about women's voices. They made me think of Kevin Costner. He's not a bad actor, not a GOOD actor, mind you, but his voice is silly. Just silly - in Wyatt Earp he was just silly. He was GREAT in Field of Dreams.

Morgan Freeman - THAT is a voice. Remember Richard Burton? And people LOVE bo's voice. A lot of them to the extent that they don't really know what he is saying but they LOVE to hear him say it.

On the nail
Summarised in "Hillary lost because she is Hillary"!

wow
I really said that about bo - "A lot of people don't really know what he is saying but they LOVE to hear him say it." And they'll probably vote for him for that and no other reason.

That looks like a terrible oversimplification but I really don't think it is. I pray I'm wrong, but the dumbing down of America continues unabated.

Mountain Rose
You have my sympathy for living in California, you have my admiration for your #1 post.

Thanks

Bunk
Did anyone notice Hillary's body position in the associated picture at the top?
She is ready do be crucified...is that a message or what.

Many of the
world's countries elected female heads of state: India, Israel, Pakistan, Argentina, United Kingdom, Germany and the Phillippines.

So, it is NOT if it is a female or a male candidate, it is if it is Hillary Clinton or anybody else.

If Hillary Clinton were anything like the leaders of the any of the above-mentioned female leaders of the above-mentioned countries, she would have no problem being elected.

Alas, she is NOT!

TOO BAD!!

Agree
Uncle Max - I am with you on this.

The Clinton's DO NOT walk away and they don't like to lose. I think that Hillary still has something up her pantsuit sleeve.

Of Course
Sure a woman can be elected president just not the Clinton woman. HILLARY CLINTON RAN A SEXIST, RACIST, DISHONEST, DISINGENUOUS CAMPAIGN AND STILL LOST!!!!!

Morris knows nothing
According to Morris, Hillary was going to be the next President of the United States. He said the single woman vote would come out In droves and propel Hillary to victory.

Of course a woman can win, but she will have to be a conservative woman. She will be a successful woman in the private sector, not someone who stands by her man and cannot succeed without him. She won’t be a left-wing radical. She will be the anti-Hillary.

A woman is McLame's only hope
Obama can lie, cheat and steal his way to the White House. There are more than enough idiots out there to overlook everything and vote him in. WHy? Because he's charming and a good communicator.

If McLame goes for anything but a woman, it will be seen as "business as usual." He's more decrepid than Bob Dole. If he were to pick a dynamic, conservative female, say Palin, some of these "feel good" idiots might wake up and listen to a little common sense from a strong female. REpublican men can talk all they want at this point. Nobody is listening. A female, however, will be seen as a very strong candidate to become the next president. A female Republican VP candidate is insurance against an Obama/Clinton ticket.

So where are these conservative women?
Sorry ladies, not with you on this one. Name one woman who has the popularity, the power, and the drive to win a national election?

Women are the majority, they vote in much larger numbers than men, and still...not one single female President ever. What a sham gals. We already know that men HATE taking orders from women, but why is it that females are always their own worst enemy? Are they so used to taking orders from men that they will use ANY excuse to justify their own self-loathing?

Look at Mountain Rose talking about Hillary's voice! Are you kidding me? Her voice! Ridiculous...

From the posts I think many of you are closeted Hillary fans anyway. You just couldn't ever out yourself as someone who admires her strength, determination, and ability to fight dirty like all the other men in Capital Hill. You know you wanted her to take out Obama....admit it.

So for all you mothers out there, when your daughters ask you if they can become President one day, you tell them "no honey, we women vote for the men and make excuses about it later"

Hillary 12!

As far as Hillary goes
Obama knows that Hillary as his VP will almost guarantee him the White HOuse. But, there is only one way that he can choose her: if it is clear to all concerned that it is HIS decision - and that is what is going on now.

He told Hillary if she wanted the VP slot, she had to shut the hell up, which she has uncharacteristically done. So you can bet money on it. Hillary will be his running mate. Obama can't wait to here the cries of ecstacy when he announces her name at the convention.
