Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

This is not a good time to be Mitt Romney. After almost a year of having the Iowa and New Hampshire airwaves to himself, he is now facing a challenge on the right from Mike Huckabee and Fred Thompson and on the left from Rudy Giuliani.

Pressed from bo th sides, he is leaking votes. Where once a sweep of the table of the early states (Iowa, New Hampshire, Michigan and South Carolina) appeared in the cards, he is now looking at a possible defeat in Iowa, derailing his plans.

The latest Iowa Rasmussen Poll (11-26-07) shows Huckabee in the lead at 28 percent with Romney at 25 percent, and both Thompson and Giuliani trailing way back at 12 percent. The average of the past five Iowa polls, computed by Real Clear Politics, Romney holds a narrow 27-24 lead over Huckabee.

In the CNN-YouTube debate, Romney and Rudy ripped each other apart to the likely benefit of Huckabee who, apart from a bump or two, remained serenely atop the debate while others kicked and clawed below.

Romney is taking flack for his flip-flop-flip over abortion. Voters know that his statement that he changed his mind to become pro-life is belied by the fact that he had changed it before to become pro-choice when he decided to run in Massachusetts. His unreliability on this issue combines with his pro-gay rights comments during his Senate race against Ted Kennedy to raise doubts about him on the right.

The fact is that the only two things holding Romney aloft in the early states were the fact that he was the only alternative to Giuliani and that he was spending a bundle on campaign advertising.

For many months the other campaigns were not on the air in Iowa or New Hampshire. Why Giuliani didn’t advertise is a mystery and likely the subject of future political science classes. Huckabee, of course, was broke, and Thompson couldn’t get his act together in time.

But now that everybody is on the air, Huckabee is emerging as a new alternative to Giuliani for socially conservative voters. Reliably pro-life and anti-gay marriage, he is now emerging as the real thing — a social conservative alternative to the ersatz Romney version.

And, of course, he’s not a Mormon. Many Republicans remain fearful that nominating a Mormon would be tantamount to handing the election to the Democrats.

If Huckabee beats Romnney in Iowa, it may imperil the rest of the four-state sweep which Romney is anticipating.

New Hampshire, which holds its primary just five days after Iowa, has always been Romney territory since two-thirds of the state watches Boston television where Mitt has starred as governor for the past four years. But, Romney has always drawn about a third of the vote there while Giuliani, McCain and Huckabee — that's the order — have divided the rest.

But, if one-third of the primary voters are backing Romney in New Hampshire, what about the other two-thirds? Universally known because of his Massachusetts governorship, Romney may have hit his ceiling at a third of the vote. And, should he lose Iowa, he may drop into the high 20s. Meanwhile, the two-thirds that have never backed Romney may consolidate around Giuliani and Huckabee. The latest polls in New Hampshire show Huckabee rising, most recently to 14 per cent of the vote. (Rasmussen’s latest has Romney at 34 percent, McCain and Rudy tied at 15 percent and Huckabee at 14 percent). A Huckabee victory might push him past Romney. If Mitt doesn’t win either Iowa or New Hampshire, he is finished.

Giuliani, on the other hand, could lose both early states and live to fight again down the road. With a national lead and a 50-state presence, Rudy, like Hillary, cannot be knocked out in the early going.

And a lot will depend on whether Independents vote in New Hampshire’s Democratic or Republican primaries. If Hillary loses in Iowa, they will probably stay in the Democratic contest. But if she wins, all but ending the Democratic battle, they will probably come into the Republican contest. Most of the Independents who enter the Republican primary probably will support either Giuliani or McCain, giving them a boost at the expense of both Romney and Huckabee.

But, if Hillary is in trouble in Iowa & mdash; as we think she is — the Independents will stay in the Democratic contest and those who remain in the Republican primary are likely to be stalwarts of either Romney or Huckabee.

Since when is it acceptable to raise any and all taxes, which he is on record as supporting - at least in one interview for Arkansas? Huckabee is no fiscal conservative, he is pro-life and pro- traditional marriage, but also pro-illegal a;ien benefits (in-state tuition) and pro-government tabacco ban, which may hurt him in the south.

I believe evangelicals are starting to
be attracted to Huckabee from the current crop of top tier candidates because of his socially conservative views and acceptable fiscally conservative views. He'll get even stronger when he hits the bible belt states with a win in Iowa under his belt! I like Mike.

so predictable
As others have noted on TH (loco, sir aslan and DocJ below), Morris is first a neoCON... their man is Regularization Rudy, and the Huckster is his shill who wants to be veep. Regularization Rudy and the Huckster are both globalists who love their amigos from the south. If the Huckster can wound Mitt in Iowa, Rudy and Huckster have a chance to pull off the big con-- Morris used to work for the Clintons AND the Huckster... this is simply more of his big con.

I have no idea what Morris's general agenda is beyond an ethnic loyalty to Israel over America, despite the name change. About 70% of America wants the next POTUS to pursue different courses from Presidente Jorge. For them the choice MUST NOT BE Rudy and Huckster. Been there, done that! ILLEGALS need to be made to leave, and we need to quit pretentiously trying to re-educate the world about how to govern itself and what to think. We will have spent $2 TRILLION per the CBO to make a mess in Iraq... but those 18 permanent bases will remain. Hmmm-- NOT America's priority. That $ COULD have made the raped (and nonexistent) S.S. fund healthy.

Huckabee's timing is perfect for Romney
As a evangelical populist, he's the obvious choice for anyone in the Bible belt who doesn't take the time to get to know his voting record. That's what most populists do they obfuscate the facts by hyping up their audiences with a bunch of rhetoric about how they represent the people based on their ethic/religiosity.

Therein lies the problem for Huckabee. He's emerged too quickly and now Romney and Giuliani have a chance to point out just how much he only represents his constituency in name only, having one of the most liberal and pro-tax voting records among the conservatives.

Had Huckabee emerged in late December he could have snowed the republican caucus and sealed the deal in the primaries.

Feasible set
Romney has more than one set of strategies that he can pursue to win the nomination. Rudy also has a feasible set. McCain has one strategy available to him. Huck has one strategy available to him. I really do not see Fred getting the nomination except by default.

Kerry was in single digits in Dec nationally in 2003. However, he had been number 1 or 2 for much of the year in IA and NH.

A slingshot strategy is not a static strategy. It converts into a national strategy at some point. Romney is now moving to a more national strategy. He will still do everything he can to win IA but if he does not then he has options. His early primary numbers have held up remarkably well. Rudys have not done well at all.

Huckabee was free to roam around IA for the last 3 months untouched. Fred should have attacked him about 3 weeks ago but he did not. Romney is moving now and that is about the right time for him to move. When Romney wins IA it now counts for much more and Huck has taken a lot of wind out of Fred in the South. Huck puts the South in reach of both Rudy and Romney and that is why they have not done anything.

Only one conservative anti Rudy will emerge. I would still bet on Romney.

Huckabee is the choice
od the driveby media. Don't be fooled. They have picked him in order to destroy him down the way as a crazy, bible thumping evengelical. The media likes to pick presidential nominees especially republicans. They have their own reasons and agenda.

Huckabee can not win
I will not vote for another George Bush faux conservative, which Huckabee is. According to the Eagle Forum, he has destroyed the conservative movement in Arkansas, and has left the Republican party in disarray.

He is simply not someone we can trust. He totally fails the test on immigration, a hot button issue.

No, thanks, Dick Morris. It won't fly.

Huckabee can win
From what I've seen of the candidates, Huckabee is the most able to win. Here are some news articles, the good and the bad of Huckabee.

Cornpone
Change the LEGAL immigration policies so it doesn't take 6-7 years to become a legal citizen - this will discourage people from circumventing the law (this is the 'Path to citizenship' Gov Huckabee supports -

For the non-criminal illegal aliens

aka AMNESTY !!!!!!!

BG

You do a fantastic job of prognosticating the election primaries.

Good job, well done.

I wouldn't read so much into Morris
He will not move the votes one way or another though I find his opinion interesting.

I so want Huckabee to be the one but I am starting to think he is another Bush. Mostly good but a few soft spots. This is causing me to want Hunter but let's get real - he can't get the time of day.

With all of that I am still standing by my prediction that Hillary will be the next president and we will all end up in a very deep & stinky hole. And she and her friends will get drunk with power and money. Just imagine what she signs on day two: Kyoto.

BG

You do a fantastic job of prognosticating the election primaries.

Stoic Patriot

I was impressed with his immigration theme until as he was talking, at the very end, he said something like, "for those (immigrants) who have been here for a "long" time, they can pay a "large" fine and leave or "apply" for consideration to their staying".

How long is long.??. 3 years, 5 years, 10 years

How big is a big fine.??. 1,000., 3,000., 5,000.,

Not that it matters because he is talking about applying for an amnesty.

He comes across well, but I don't trust him on taxes or immigration.

I think he believes himself and his personal philosophy to be above all other philosophies.

I see a Baptist George Bush.

equafinality
Romney is a master at equafinality. He knows he has several combinations of strategies that can be successful. When conditions shift he adjusts strategy. He is doing that now as the environment has shifted in his favor. He is making the right move at the right time.

A slingshot strategy is not a static strategy. It evolves into a national strategy. The timing is the only question. Romney is moving to a national strategy now.

He, much better than ,can survive an early primary loss. He has more money and better poll numbers in the early primaries. Rudy is very likely to lose IA badly, may run 3rd or 4th in NH (a real shock), and will lose SC if he loses the first 2. His scandals can't be helping in MI.

Romney knows he can evolve into a national strategy now instead of later. Now is the time to move while Fred can still hold Huck down in the South and all of Huck's negatives hit him from the national level. The local IA press is pumping Huck so Romney goes national as that serves him both in IA and nationally.

I would rather be Romney than Rudy. Rudy will lose all of the early primaries. His national halo will be tarnished.

Oops
*than the Clintons*

Dick I'm impressed
Sort of.... You can actually write about something other that the clintons.

I noted early in the week
I think IA will be a battle. However, Romney will probably win, if not he will be a close second. Rudy and Fred will not do well.

Huckabee will still get killed in NH on his tax record but he may cause Rudy to run 3rd or 4th. Huckabee is a 2 edged sword for Romney. He causes problems in IA but he helps in the South by dividing Fred and he can hurt Rudy at the same time.

If Rudy is weak enough in IA, NH, SC it really hurts him. Fred is effectively dead as he let Huck rise in IA and then spread. Fred is just to slow. Romney makes the right moves at the right time.

To answer your question directly, Romney has the resources to survive an early lose or two. Given Rudy's scandals, Romney may be in a better position.

Romney is now moving on into a national campaign. You will notice that Romney is addressing the Huckabee threat nationally not just in IA. The religion speech is a national strategy. It was just a matter of timing as to when Romney made the move to a more national strategy and now is the perfect timing.

Romney will win as many of the early primaries as he can. If he loses one it is better to lose to Huck than to Rudy.

Huck creates a lot of cross currents. He pulls votes mainly from Fred but also Rudy and McCain. Romney is making the moves he needs to hold onto his votes now. He can build from there.

Huck is replacing Fred as the 3rd alternative. I doubt if he will last. He will crash just like McCain and Fred before him. However, like McCain he will stick around and divide up the South. That favors Romney if he makes the right moves now.

Correct Mr. Cook.
As further evidenced by the title of Morris' latest book...

for BG
BG writes: "Romney now will get a bounce when he wins IA. "

What if Romney loses Iowa?

What creative spin will you come up with then?

Bot
If you are going to talk about the 20 ethics proceedings into the gifts of Gov Huckabee you might include the facts about who raised the issues and what the outcomes were. The majority were raised by a tabloid editor and the rest by members of the Democratic Party or the party itself. There were findings in five of the cases and a fine was levied for only one.

If accepting a canoe worth a few hundred dollars is the worst Gov Huckabee has done with respect to ethics than you really need to find other reasons not to vote for him.

In the time that the taxes of Arkansans increased 47 percent, the average of all 50 states was 98 percent.

Context is a wonderful thing.

BTW - Saw Romney on CSPAN in Iowa from Friday... he was very impressive. His debate performance was horrible, but this particular event had me thinking I might be able to vote for him.

Yes, Dick is a little slimey
BUT, his analysis is useful when taken in small doses and diluted with others, like Novak, Saunders, Parker and many others here on TH. Some posters' opinions are interesting, too, unless they are stridently partisan, like most of the Dr. Paul supporters or the leftists, who I mostly ignore as they don't add anything to the debate except vitriol and venom.

Dick and Eileen get it right more than they're wrong, maybe 55% to 45% and that's better than most. I can forgive his past perversions because that's what the Bible tells me to do, especially since he is repentant for not only those but also for his assistance to the Clintons over the years.

Ad hominem restrictus

The Huckster is NO conservative
Mike Huckabee was regarded by fellow Republican governors as a compulsive tax increaser and spender. He increased the Arkansas tax burden by 47 percent, boosting the levies on gasoline and cigarettes. The Arkansas Leader.com editorialized that Mike Huckabee raised more taxes in 10 years in office than Bill Clinton did in his 12 years.

The Arkansas Ethics Commission held proceedings 20 times on the former governor. During his tenure, Huckabee accepted 314 gifts valued overall at more than $150,000, according to documents filed with the Arkansas secretary of state's office. (He accepted 187 gifts in his first three years as governor but was not required to report their value.)

Two months after taking office, Huckabee stunned the state by saying he questioned rapist Wayne DuMond's guilt and that it was his intention to free the rapist, DuMond murdered a women in Illinois after Huckabee set him free

Huckabee battled conservatives within his own party who were pushing for stricter state-level immigration measures, such as:.
- proof of legal status when applying for state services that aren’t federally mandated
- proof of citizenship when registering to vote
- Huckabee failed in his effort to make children of illegal immigrants eligible for state-funded scholarships and in-state tuition to Arkansas colleges.

Does Huckabee subscribe to his spiritual advisor Timothy LaHay’s views of the Rapture, United Nations, and a Palestinian state?”

Mike fails on so many levels as a true conservative.

Morris
Dick Morris is a slimy, dishonest, gun for hire, who's only saving grace is that he can't shoot straight.

Morris and Illegal immigration
He writes a book decrying illegal immigration...yet he backs two of the worst people to stop it. Morris makes me turn the station whenever I see him on tv. The only thing I know he does well is read the paper. He's all over the map with his predictions, yet they always seem to coincide with actual events. Not exactly predictions . This guy is about as trustworthy as Bill Clinton and wife.

amnesty? get outta ahere!
Huckabee's position on illegal immigration refreshingly practical.

Here's a summary:

1. Close the border

2. Heavily fine businesses that knowingly hire illegals

3. Deport illegal aliens that commit crimes (this is a practical measure... deporting 20 million illegals is not)

4. Change the LEGAL immigration policies so it doesn't take 6-7 years to become a legal citizen - this will discourage people from circumventing the law (this is the 'Path to citizenship' Gov Huckabee supports - aka NOT AMNESTY).

Simple, practical, and doable... and consistent with his policies and actions while Gov of Arkansas

Dick Morris never fails
to trash Romney, and to remind us that a Mormon cannot get elected. Of course, he is for both Guiliani and Huck.

It is quite telling who Huckabee hires and takes advice from, is it not? I don't know if there is anyone in the business that is wrong more often, and about more things than Morris. Do you?

Romney should be thankful Morris is not talking him up.

BG....DOES HAVE A GOOD POINT????
The Evangelical votes that will probably go to Huckabee are the ones that probably would not have gone to Romney in the first place but rather to Fred Thompson had he been able to attract them.

Romney will get a lot of Evangelical votes except for the die hards who know better. But, unfortunately, most of them will probably vote for Huckabee.

This could turn out to help Romney tremendously by default. However, there is one thing most people have overlooked and its this: The establishment is pushing Huckabee so hard to get him positioned to siphon off the Evangelical votes that it could backfire and Huckabee could walk away with the whole thing hands down...then the establishment would have to kill their own Frankenstein down the road...later instead of sooner!!!

BG, once again, a great post!
You obviously are a clear thinker! I appreciated your analogy and I hope you are right. This Iowa race is becoming more interesting. Mitt has the organization, the funds, and the intelligence to make the grade. You are so right it is a great time to be Mitt Romney!

HUCKABEE HIT PIECE BY DICK MORRIS?????
I AM A RON PAUL SUPPORTER BUT THIS PIECE BY MORRIS IS NOTHING MORE THAN A NEOCON HIT PIECE TO HELP TAKE OUT ROMNEY. GUILIANI IS THE NEOCON
FAVORITE AND THE JACOBIN/NEOCONS MUST DIVIDE THE EVANGELICAL VOTE SO RUDY WILL GET ENOUGH VOTES IN THE EARLY PRIMARIES...THIS IS WHAT THEY WANTED FRED THOMPSON IN THERE FOR...BUT THOMPSON COULD NOT RALLY ANY EVANGELICALS...NOW THE MEDIA IS PUSHING HUCKABEE...ITS DIRTY POLITICS ESTABLISHMENT STYLE!!! LOL

CONSIDER THE EARLY POLITICAL CAREER OF HUCKABEE:

Dick Morris, who had previously worked for Bill Clinton, advised Huckabee on his races in 1993 and 1994.[13] Huckabee commented that Morris was a "personal friend".[13] A newspaper article reported on Huckabee's 1993 win: "Morris said the mistake Republicans always make is that they are too much of a country club set. What we wanted to do was run a progressive campaign that would appeal to all Arkansans.'"[13] Morris elaborated, "So we opened the campaign with ads that characterized Mike as more of a moderate whose values were the same as those of other Arkansans."[13]

Romney is in trouble-Morris is right!
Just because a lot of people have said that Huckabee is 'open borders' or 'pro-illegal immigration' does not make it so.

-----------------------------------------------
EXACTLY! He never sais naytyhig other thna enforce the laws, and secure the borders>

These prevaricators and fabulists will say anything to help mitt the flip, who is now in panic mode and moribund.

Another "surprise" from Morris
Dick Morris is so transparent in his negative statements that I'm surprised he is not simply identified as a paid publicist on behalf of Rudy. He will say anything negative to help Huck in Iowa, in order to help Rudy elsewhere.

If you are known by the company you keep, I would be embarassed to be either Rudy or Huck.

Great Time
This is a great time to be Mitt Romney. Yes Dick has worked for Huck in the past.

1. Huck has just split the South by dividing Fred's support.

2. Huck has changed the expectations game in IA at the right time for Romney.

3. Romney now will get a bounce when he wins IA.

4. Rudy has ethics problems and so does Huck.

5. Romney more so than Rudy can survive until Super T. Rudy is going to run 3rd or 4th and do badly in NH

6. What works for Huck in IA is a disaster nationally. He is now the Pat Robertson of 2008.

7. Huck has handed Mitt a great opportunity and Mitt is taking it to the bank.

Huckabee is Amnesty Friendly
When Huckabee says no amnesty, he means it the same way GWB does when he says no amnesty.

Hillary's Achilles Heel

Hillary is still singing the "Comprehensive Immigration Reform" tune (all the Dems, really), not realizing it is her swan song.

The only issue I have ever seen 75-80% of Americans agree on is stopping illegal aliens. Any GOP candidate that is credible (not Rudy, McCain, or Huckabee) on this issue could win in a landslide.

The biggest problem is the RNC has sold it's soul to the cheap labor express. They are determined to nominate an amnesty candidate, even if it means losing the election. Stupid Party, indeed.

http://kevinmccullough.townhall.com/blog/g/baebf8ed-6437-4c 1c-bc52-0b979cfc4249

Attrition Through Enforcement
Mass deportations is a straw man argument, totally unnecessary. Enforcement will encourage them to leave on their own.

Evidence that attrition through enforcement will work, illegals are returning home from Arizona. The new laws don't even take effect until January.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21872123/

HUNTER FOR AMERICA

Securing the border and enforcing the law is the only way we get to keep our rule of law, our representative Republic, and our Constitution. We must elect a President who WILL secure the border and enforce the law. If citizenship becomes meaningless, this will no longer be the United States of America.

The so-called "top tier" will not get out the voters necessary for a GOP win. Increasing turnout is the key. Give people something to vote for. Not just the lesser of two evils. Won't work this time. People are fed up with the inundation of illegal aliens. They would come out in droves for the clear choice of D=amnesty or R=enforcement. They will stay home if they both equal amnesty.

There is a huge majority of American citizens waiting for someone to pledge to uphold the laws and secure the borders, let's not ignore them any more.

http://www.gohunter08.com

Don't Forget, Dick Sucks Toes
This guy is shilling for Rudy. Huckabee is useful to stop Romney's early state strategy.
Those who do not want amnesty and want the border secured and the law enforced will have to elect a President who will do so. The current one has made it clear he will not. Corporate interests and the RNC want to keep the cheap labor express going. The citizens/voters want the border secured and the laws enforced. Most people are for legal immigration, just not illegal inundation. If we act like sheep and don't stop it, we will lose our country without a bleat.

No Amnesty Candidates

No Rudy, No McCain, No Huckabee

Romney and Thompson are saying the right things now, but haven't always. Hunter and Tancredo have been working on this for years on our behalf. Longer than most of you have been alarmed about it, they have been trying to sound the alarm. Choose carefully in the primaries, your future depends on it.

Christy
Just because a lot of people have said that Huckabee is 'open borders' or 'pro-illegal immigration' does not make it so.

Neither does supporting scholarship eligibility for children of illegals that have been in the state system (receiving federal funds for their attendance).

I find Huckabee's position on illegal immigration refreshingly practical. Here's a summary;

Stoic Patriot
Just google "huckabee illegal immigration" and see what you find. It's very interesting. Looks like Huckabee's campaign page makes him look tougher than he's actually been. Or maybe he's a flip flopper on this issue.

Christy
http://www.mikehuckabee.com/?FuseAction=Issues.View&Issue_i d=4

Read all of it. Particularly this part:

"The Governor opposes and will never allow amnesty. He opposed the amnesty President Bush and Senator McCain tried to ram through Congress this summer, and opposed the misnamed DREAM Act, which would have put us on the slippery slope to amnesty for all."

Huckabee supports amnesty for illegals
What's going to happen to Huckabee when word gets out that he supports a "path to citizenship" for illegals currently in our country? He has even said, "If you want somebody who's strict on immigration, I'm not your man." When you consider that the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Bill went down to defeat because ordinary Americans were so passionately against it, Huckabee's immigration position isn't going to be very popular, once it becomes well known.

Mittreport
In your own article, you mention Huck's appearance on "This Week." Until you can corroborate something, perhaps you shouldn't be bothering to make claims you can't back up.

Am I suspicious of Morris? Always. But do I trust Huckabee? Sure.

Hillary
It took a long time, but he did get some mentions of hillary into this piece.

Mittreport: What do you want from an unprincipled phoney?

Dick Advises Huckabee
Hey Dick, How about having some integrity and putting a disclaimer that you are a CLOSE friend of Huckabee and currently are advising him!

This is nothing more than a hit piece on Mitt on behalf of your your client Huckabee!
