Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Is the extremist agenda of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad - including support for terror, development of nuclear weapons and confrontation with the United States and Israel - popular among Iranians? Are they willing to make the sacrifices that would come from an increasingly tight global boycott imposed because of Iran's defiance of United Nations strictures on its nuclear development?

A rare glimpse into the minds of the Iranian people - via a telephone survey of Iranians conducted for Terror Free Tomorrow - shows that the answers to both questions is "no!"

Apparently, Ahmadinejad and the ayatollahs are in serious political trouble. Iranians do not much care about getting the bomb and very much worry about global isolation.

The survey shows:

* Iranians oppose the institution of an "unelected Supreme Leader" by 61-27 and favor democracy by 79-14. So when liberals assail neocons for having a naive faith in peoples' aspirations for freedom, they are just wrong - even in Iran.

* Iranians want nuclear power more than nuclear weapons. Suffering under gasoline rationing and falling energy exports, three-quarters said that developing nuclear power, without weapons, was "very important." By contrast, only 37 percent said developing nuclear weapons was a similar priority. Since the Iranian regime says that it wants nuclear power, not nuclear weapons, its stated position accords with its people's views. (The government, of course, is lying and wants to get a bomb.)

The survey underscores the need to separate nuclear power from weaponry in the mi nds of the people and make clear that Western sanctions are designed to prevent Iran from getting the bomb, not power or energy.

* Iranians would gladly agree to "full inspections and a guarantee that Iran would not develop nuclear weapons" if other nations would increase overall trade and investment (80 percent), increase investment in the energy sector (79 percent), give humanitarian assistance (80 percent) or assist in helping Iran develop peaceful nuclear energy (80 percent).

* Only 33 percent said supporting terrorist proxies Hezbollah or Hamas was a priority, and 55 percent are ready to endorse full recognition of Israel and of a Palestinian state if they could get "normal trade and full recognition" from the United States. Almost two-thirds - 64 percent - said that they are willing to end Iranian assistance to armed groups in Iraq and 51 percent would forgo nuclear weaponry and accept full international controls and inspections in return for normal relat ions with the United States.

These data emphasize the importance of a Western willingness to bring Iran in from the cold in return for a no-nuclear-weapons agreement. The palpable thirst of the people for an end to their isolation speaks volumes about the attractiveness of such a proposition.

* The government in Iran gets dismal ratings. By 52-33, Iranians feel Ahmadinejad has failed to cut unemployment or inflation; by 56-22, they say he has not kept his campaign promise to "put oil revenues on the tables of the average family."

But does this all matter? Do the opinions of the Iranian people count in this dictatorship? Clearly, they do. The data point to a potential for revolution should Iran's global isolation increase. People are fed up with living in a pariah state and want normal relations with the rest of the world - even if it means abandoning their leaders' extremist agenda.

Thus, the recent actions of Florida, Missouri and Louis iana in cutting off all pension-fund investments in companies that do business in Iran takes on particular importance. Their nation's global isolation clearly grates on the Iranian people and stokes their fears and disenchantment with their government.

Divestment legislation is making good progress in Pennsylvania (shepherded by state Rep. Josh Shapiro, a Democrat) and in California and New Jersey. In New York, unfortunately, the Legislature adjourned without taking any action. Divestterror.org, an organization founded by Frank Gaffney of the Reagan Pentagon, is leading these battles.

The Louisiana action is particularly important. The state law - sponsored by state Rep. Pete Schneider, a Republican - authorizes the governor to contract with Wall Street firms to develop a terror-free investment index of companies and mutual funds in which the state can put its pension funds. Once such a fund is developed, the potential for it to become the gold standard for disinvestment i s enormous.

Thanks Dick, for stating the obvious. Anyone with a superficial knowlege of Iran knows everything written above.

Ahmadinejad is a religious fanatic who truly believes that martyrdom of the entire population is in God's plan. There is no way to stop him short of his death. That is the real threat from Iran.

Lob one nuke into Israel and accept the conequences; that's fine with him.

Our leaders will not tell us the stark truth about this "most dangerous man in the world".

The Iranian People
Observers of Iran know that there is a disconnect between a moderate, in part pro-Western Iranian people and the mullah controlled radical Iranian government. Mark Bowden in his excellent book "Guests if the Ayatollah" describes it in his last chapter. Disparaging a particular poll, as HalO does, misses the point about the disconnect between the Iranian people and the Iranian government that in our dealings with Iran, we need to keep in mind. Being strong with Ahmadinejad, so as to keep him in check, is what in the best interests of the Iranian people. Running away from Iraq, as the left wing trolls so ardently desire to do, so that radcal Islamists are encouraged, is not helpful to the Iranian people. Being an appeasement toady to Ahmadinejad, as HalO obviously is, would be really stupid.

Apparently Hal0...
has no problem showing one and all what a fool he/she/it is...

Why is that?

I see your posting regarding Sowell's commentary was at least as inane and clueless as your comment here...

Maybe its true, libtards are incapable of feeling shame for saying or doing something abysmally idiotic...

Morris
could've done us a favor by outlining how the poll was conducted- how many people were phoned, and how were they picked?
This does sound like a propaganda exercise.

Left out
Not only is there a deep sense of disappointment in the Iranian government by the nationalistic Persians, there are separatist ethnic groups in both the east and west that are restless minorities tired of being abused.

In the east, ethnic Balouchs have been rallying against the government not only in Iran, but Pakistan as well.

In the west, mainly the northwest, ethnic Kurds and Azeris are close to being considered a true insurrection. The media has all but ignored Iranian artillery shelling of areas inside Iraqi Kurdistan, likely because Turkey is guilty of the same tactics.

For HalO
There are none so blind as those who will not see. As for Iran not threatening the destruction of Israel, do you even listen to the news? The President of Iran has repeatedly said he will destroy Israel: "I will wipe Israel off the map". I think that's pretty unequivocal. There's an article on this site today about his prediction that Israel will be gone soon. And anyone who believes that Iran sitting on top of huge oil reserves is only developing nuke energy, not nuke weapons, is an idiot. But, as I said, there are none so.....

FOWG
FOWG posted, "Thanks Dick, for stating the obvious."

Some people need the "obvious" because they can't grasp the simplest concepts of international politics.

Some posters here seem to think that Iran is a "pacifistic" nation. They are the same posters who thought Hussein was a kindly old gentleman who loved to fly kites with children.

These "head in the sand" posters are afraid of Russian and the PRC. NEWS FLASH: The USA is the strongest nation on this planet. In ANY conflict, from throwing rocks to full nuclear exchange, we win.

Ahmadinejad knows that. So do Putin and Kim. The only people who apparently do not understand the reality of the American hegemony are the leftist posters on TH.com and some idiot congressmen like Reid, Durbin and Murtha.

????????????????
Is This News to ANYONE?!?!?!

Nowhere to hide
We now have Iran virtually surrounded just as we planned long before the invasion in Afghanistan. These were contingency plans long before 9/11 some of which even predate Clinton. 9/11 simply allowed us the sympathy to begin the use of these plans. We have always been after those governments that harbor terrorists and for the most part we have been overwhelmingly successful.
As our Pakistan allies begin the final phase of clearing the rest of their country and now with Hamas contained in Gaza and with Syria becoming more and more isolated the terrorists are simply running out of hiding places and will soon find no sanctuary governments to hide behind.
The logic of these contingency plans are now transparent.

Not really surprising
As Iranians have never experienced actual democracy/republic (closest was Mousadegh's regime which Ike overthrew in 1952--but that was only as "democratic" as the regime of Z.A. Bhutto in 1971-1977 Pakistan), only absolute monarchy and brutal mullahist totalitarianism (the latter is akin to maoist/stalinist rule--only difference is "the system" used as god-substitute by maoists/stalinists vs. "Allah" by mullahs).

Kicking the "CAN"
Mr. Morris has once again failed to move the debate forward! Why?Let's review;America will be greeted with "OPEN ARMS" in Iraq(NO),Iran is located in a desert(WATER),Islam means "TOTAL SUBMISSION TO ALLAH",all their needs are now being provided by CHINA.The aforementioned lays only a superficial basis for my argument.Iran is buying time,in that they realize how tenuous our stay in Iraq is.What does Iran want?Control of the Middle East, might be a possibility.Fighting a nuclear war would defeat that purpose, therefore that's a silly backdrop for any argument. While North Korea counterfeits our money and Venezuela eliminates "US" businesses.China,Iran and "OTHERS" wait. There is an Economic war afoot and "US" don't even know it!The people who are removing pension investments from Iran and other alleged terrorist countries must be held accountable for those funds and any loses that may transpire.A person who has a fiduciary "DUTY" cannot abandon that "DUTY" for any POLITICAL purpose.Pension fund owners should file a lawsuit,immediately...

update where needed
BBDog has not been paying attention.

To bring forth the 'twelfth imam', Israel must be destroyed. The most economical way to do that is use Islamic bombs. The resulting chaos and loss of life fits well within shiite prophecy. That is why the religious fanatics leading Iran are so dangerous; MAD does not apply to this mindset.

A glance at a map will show that a land invasion by Iranian forces is not very practical.

To Killer: Go to persepolis.com for photos of the Iranian countryside and report back if you still think it resembles the Saudi desert.

Reminders
OK, so this isn't new. Yet, because, from a long range perspective this is a sound, such reminders help us to get behind the keys, the pen or on the horn and tell our reps. that we support divestment legislation. And, seems there is a way to go towards centralizing info. that enables the necessary listings. Halo is only able to finger paint with mud, using a closed fist, when it comes to political expressions. Ignore the baby venting. For the keen minds who share their thoughts, even if I may not agree. I thank you.

Slipping up...
*A rare glimpse into the minds of the Iranian people - via a telephone survey of Iranians conducted for Terror Free Tomorrow - shows that the answers to both questions is "no!"*

I think that you may have slipped up here, Dick, the same way the pollsters did in the 1948 Truman/Dewey election. The poor in Iran have typically supported the present regime while those better off have not.

You seem to be thinking that a telephone poll might be representative of the Iranian population. I suspect that it is biased, and very likely fatally so, in favour of people's views who are well-off enough to have a telephone.

Try not to forget, Ahmadinejad did actually win the last Iranian election.

The People
The Irianian people are really pro-peace and favor a democratic government. Pakiston's people, it was reported, are clamoring for an election and a democratic government. Well, before the Iraq war, it was said that, of all the people in the middle east, they were the most educated and would, once free from Sadaam, immediatly embrace democracy and we could leave. Right!!! It really is nice to have an opinion and to judge the president's decisions. What if these folks had to make a decision and face the people after they make it? I wish it were true that it is just the administrations. In the meantime, until these peaceloving people do something, we have to deal with the radical muslims, Iran etc. Personally, I would hope that what is reported by our media doesn't reflect the real American people.

Halo
Halo,

A well respected news report today stated that Putin would gladly disarm if President Bush would build a KFC within walking distance to his home, and allow him to sleep in the Lincoln Room for two nights.

In other breaking news the Iranian government has vowed to lay aside its difference with Israel if they would agree to teach them how to make Matzo Balls.

Osama was heard by high level government officials to say that if the US would locate 72 nice looking virgins for all of his countrymen, he might be willing to forego future attacks on the US, but the state department had to decline because it didn’t think that it could find 72 virgins among the liberals, and conservatives could not be persuaded to agree to such a plan.

China and Taiwan came to an agreement that China would grant Taiwan its sovereignty if Taiwan would sell China the patient for Tonka Toys.

With news like this I am hopeful of a future world where we can all get along.

Although none of this is true, I thought that I would make your day.

Rob
Black Dog is typical of the mooks who'd rather live their lives on bended knee than actually stand for something.

BTW, CHECK MY BLOG (click on my handle) to check out how liberals support the troops.

redstatesdrink2muchkoolaid
Yeah, it COULDN'T have been the fact that Iran has a ADULT literacy rate of 77% and to vote AGAINST Ahmadinejad might result in a beating or two?

23% of people VOTING who are ILLITERATE? A liberal's DREAM election.

Bottom Line

.....the regime in Iran must be toppled to stop them from dominating the Middle East ...

.....can we wait until they develop the bomb? ...I don't thik so ...

.....we have toppled their government before ...we can do it again but this time ...we had better end up with a government that is friendly to the U.S. .....COLOSSUS

To redstatesdrink2muchkoolaid
Ahmadinejad was elected because the mullahs have been kicking off the ballot more moderate cadidates. I suggest you read Mark Bowden's "Guests of the Ayatollah" and particularly the last chapter where he describes the workings of the Iranian government: it is a mullah controlled theocracy in the form of a democracy. Bowden also describes an Iranian people who are more pro-American than you are.

Ahmanimrod and the Ayatollah's stole
the Presidential election. He wasn't even in the running. Funny how the MSM gave him a pass on that one.

Oliver Stone to the rescue!
Just when things start to look bleak, the Hollywood Winds start to blow out the fog and clarity prevails!!

PHIL BYLER & PLAASJAAPIE
PHIL BYLER accurately points out the disconnect between the government and the Iranian people. However, that disconnect is with the middle/upper economic groups and the government. Those groups have been living the comfortable life in spite of the reign of the ayatollah controlled naton.

That's why PLAASJAAPIE raises a critical point in questioning the validity of a telephone poll. How many Iranians don't have phones? How representative can the poll really be?

In addition, are the middle/upper economic groups any more willing to have a physical confrontation than those same kind of people in the U.S. who have become too confortable to recognize, let alone fight, the evil that is an uncontained Islam?

FOWG
Thank you for the geography lesson but my reference was more of an inference.Iran has a desert like climate in that it suffers from long seasons of drought, some even continue for years. From 1999 to 2001 Iran suffered a tremendous drought which severely impacted their economy. My intent was to point out the importance of water.Yes,Iran has access to two large bodies of water, putting that water into a irrigation system has proven to be a challenge.Nuclear weapons are not as important to Iran as Nuclear Energy.Water is going to be the most precious resource in this area of the WORLD!My desert reference was an intentional attempt to draw out debate...SORRY!

Halo
Are you trying to channel OUR OWN Loyal Democrat? I ask that because that is the only way your posts make sense, although they are amusing.

If the answer to the question is yes I (and many others) would advise you to give it up because it can't be done.

honesty
would that all posters were really honest
wouldnt that be something

Halo
Lives in Oz! Geez, our troops wear uniforms, and do not use civilians as human shields. Halo, you haven't a clue regarding true terrorism, and the threat we face.

Did I vote for Wbya, no! Do I trust him, no! However, I trust him far more than Islamic fanatics whose religion condones lying, stoning, beheadings, maimings, totalitarian Sharia Law

Responses to Halo, etc.
When Town Hall readers encounter excremental droppings from assorted trolls, orcs, and goblins, it is best to just hold your nose and step around or over them. The only fitting response is silence. Do not respond to them or admit that they exist. It is sheer folly to argue with fools. And if you must argue, trade e-mail addresses and carry on your arguments privately.

Big Black Dog and HalO
As I have said before, just ignore Big Black Dog and now HalO. Their credibility is just shot by reason of the their past cukoo comments and inability to answer reasonably to their detractors. Maybe they'll go away.

Big Black Dog and HalO
PS There does exist reasonable liberals with whom I would not mind having, and would engage with, political conversations. Just understand that the types I am calling to ignore are not among these.

Call me crazy
From all I've ever read about the Iranians they hate their leadership and government and are fairly pro-Western. They also hate the Arabs which may be something we can leverage.

Now you can call me crazy but given the repression the Iranians suffer under Islam, the fact that they hate the Arabs, and that they were forcibly converted to Islam by the Arabs after losing a major battle to them in the 9th (?) century I think many of them could be converted to Christianity.

Zoroastrianism was brutally repressed by the conquering Arabs.

DerKrieger
Crazy? Like a fox. In fact, your scenario may well be our only hope for the middle east. I have to believe a sane person, if given the opportunity and freedom to make a choice, would choose Christianity every time.

I LIKE TOYING WITH THEM
Most of them like to think that they are so intellucturally superior.

I don't understand why they don't run for office.

It's fun to toy with them. After you've made a legitimate contribution, what else is there to do.

I've written on other columes to these same guys.
Halo, Jack, SteveL, and a few others.

They are condescending, so I entertain my self.

I think many of you do as well.

Big Black Dog writes:
How many times have the Arabs promised that "Jewish blood will run down the streets"?

And I suppose the WTC is still standing? That American embassies didn't get leveled and the moon landing was a Hollywood stunt. It never ceases to amaze me with you libs. You push for the fairness doctrine and hate speech legislation in this country but when some islamofacist tells you he wants you dead its just talk. By the way the mother of all battles did take place and Iraq lost. Or was that just a neocon stunt.

killer writes
A person who has a fiduciary "DUTY" cannot abandon that "DUTY" for any POLITICAL purpose.Pension fund owners should file a lawsuit,immediately...

Did you feel the same way when pension fund managers divested from South Africa?

You people let your hatred of GWB count more than your love of liberty. How many times does someone have to say he wants you dead b4 you believe him? You people should all be given the Alger Hiss award.

And this means...?
The Iraqi people expressed similar disagreement with Saddam Hussein. The Cuban people also, with Fidel Castro. And the Russian people were Just Like Us.

It seems the province of reality-challenged wonks to tell us how disaffected the average man in the street is with his demented leaders. In practice, it always amounts to... zero.

I really do wish the Iranian people were going to rebel and solve our problems for us. I also wish the bank would just gratuitously transfer $1 million of its gross revenues into my account, just because they like me so much. The likelihood of the latter is a bit greater than the likelihood of the former.

Hal0. 6:29 PM
Since your post of 4-something AM consisted of bald assertions without a shred of support, rebuttals simply asserting "No, they aren't," and "You're dreaming" would be sufficient.

If you want rebuttals of substance, perhaps you should begin by making claims of substance.

Let's start with this one: "TFT's poll is a propaganda exercise (already hailed by the war-whooping Wall Street Journal) based on lies."

Please show us a claim made in the poll that is factually incorrect. Provide the documentary evidence behind your claim that theirs is factually incorrect.

You want sound rebuttal? You gotta make an argument first.

Your move, champ.

inkling_revival
If you want to see the master of 3-word rebuttals, I suggest you check out a poster by the name of knight_of_baawa.

"No, they aren't" makes him look verbose.

Never ending littler.....
er.. litany of self loathing. Does it matter how many hate you if you are doing the right thing? Does it matter how many love you if your doing the wrong thing?

If the polls of Iranians say the majority are willing to fight to defend an evil regime, do you then feal less compassion for the inocent who will suffer if Iran should fall to a fate of its own making.

History has show that we will defend our rights, and our wrongs, and the Iranian people need to assure themselves that their fate is of their own making.

Way to go Halo
As usual you are on the wrong side... again.

Please read this prayer for the troops..
Lord, please save us from these misguided members of the "Project For A New American Century" and those who blindly follow them. Have mercy on their souls, for they know not that violence begets violence. When ignorance and arrogance sire the child of conflagration with the whore called "power," please end not your beautiful creation. This counter-productive occupation distracts them from the protection of their homeland. This, our insane adventurism abroad, our reckless dismissal of innocent life, and contempt for those who work for peace, we pray you will bless. Lord, we should have struck the evildoers in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, we forgive those who embezzle money from the United States in order to weaken and distract us. When satans minions blowback upon our shores with righteous anger and furious vengeance, do not blame the useful idiots of the neocon tribe. When
"post 9/11" becomes obsolete because of Chlorine tanker or shopping mall shoot-out massacres, punish the Freeper not. Your wrath shall not be directed at the misused and abused soldiers of the United States Armed Forces. Lord, blame the editors of townhall.com, and smite them.
Oh yeah, and Cheney, Addington, Chalabi, Wolfowitz and Feith too.
Fire out.

Focusing on outside enemies
Ahmadinejad is an unpopular ruler but is unlikely to change. He was basically elected by the Iranian theocracy. They do not have true Democratic elections. You vote for the candidate the theocracy allows to run.
As things get worse in Iran Ahmadinejad is more likely to stir up trouble outside of his borders. Nothing unites a country like an outside enemy. He's likely to keep supporting Iraqi terrorists until the US finally retaliates or keep working on Nuclear Weapons until Israel bombs the sites. Once this occurs he'll have a united country standing behind him.
Most of the countries in the Middle East are backwards and ignorant. The unpopular theocracies, monarchies and dictatorships have done a great job of convincing their masses that 6 million Jews (and/or America) with no natural resources are responsible for repressing about a billion Muslims. Again, these governments keep the hatred focused outward.

Addressing several posts
plaasjaapie's 10:54 am post yesterday "...Ahmedinejad did win the last Iranian election". Ah, but was it actually fair like Pakistan's (not-upheld--due to military government's intransigence) 1970 election?

Methinks it would only have been valid in communist-ruled nations, nazi Germany or under Ayub Khan's "Basic Democracy" (which was neither basic nor democratic).

I have never heard of any other fair election (than Pakistani 1970) post-1953 in any Muslim-majority country west of Ayodhya!

Oops
I mistakenly touched the submit.

To those who answered "HalO", how about we name him "Pitchfrack" from now on?

Of course, Pitchfrack and Black Dhole are about as capable of learning/addressing the truth as Michael Moore, David Duke or Al Sharpton!

Secret Identity
The sign off, "Fire out," used by the poster calling himelf "Brotherfire," sounds very much like one used by someone we all know, but have not heard from lately. And the content of his "prayer," sounds very much like that other chap also. Could it be a new name for an old poster?

Pres Bush is biding his time
in order to get the scheduled missile defense system deployed in Poland so that Western Europe can be defended against an Iranian missile attack before bringing all the presure that he can muster to bare against Iran just in case Amanidinadjad respons is to strike out in anger.

Ahmadinejad is responding to the polls
Ahmadinejad is responding to the polls. His thugs are rounding up as many as they can of those who are speaking out. And today I read about an adulterer who was stoned to death.

Revolution? not hardly.....
Low poll numbers hardly mean a revolution, Dick. If it did, we're about to have one here. Look at Congress' and the President's approval ratings......
