Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has disclosed that she holds stock valued at up to $15,000 in Alcatel-Lucent (formerly Alcatel SA), a company with extensive investments in Iran and Sudan — nations that sponsor terrorism.

The disclosure of Pelosi’s holdings comes at the same time that legislation is making its way through the California legislature barring state pension fund managers from investing in companies, like Alcatel-Lucent, that do business with "terror-friendly" nations.

According to Divestterror.org, a citizens group pushing a South Africa-style disinvestment program to discourage companies from doing business in terror countries, Alcatel-Lucent’s investments in terror countries are so extensive that it is included on the organization’s “dirty dozen” list of offending companies. The organization estimates that the company has invested upwards of $300 million in terror sponsoring nations during the past five years.

According to Divestterror.org, Alcatel is aiding Iran’s terrorist activities by providing state controlled companies with data transmission and switching network capabilities. “These contracts have reportedly included the provision of hardware, software, technologies, and training to Iranian companies.” It is also installing an undersea telecommunications cable in Iran.

Prior to his overthrow, Alcatel carried out major fiber optic products for dictator Saddam Hussein in Iraq, despite U.S. government warnings to the French company that the project could advance Iraqi military capabilities.

Alcatel is currently “involved in similar telecommunications projects ranging from upgrading networks to the installation underwater fiber optic cables” in Sudan and Libya.

Criticizing Alcatel, former House Armed Services Committee Chairman and current GOP presidential contender Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) expressed his worry over Alcatel’s activities in a letter to President Bush. In it, he wrote, “I am concerned about potential transfers of technology or sensitive information to other countries with which Alcatel has business dealings, which have included Burma, China, Iran, North Korea, Sudan and Syria.”

Florida has passed, and its governor, Charlie Crist, has signed legislation to state pension funds to sell their equities in companies that do business with Iran, Syria, Sudan, or North Korea. Similar legislation has passed in Louisiana and is making its way through state legislatures in New York, New Jersey, Ohio and California. Missouri’s state treasurer Sarah Steelman has implemented a disinvestment strategy administratively.

For the Speaker of the House to own stock in such a company is a particular outrage. She should immediately sell her stock and call on all other members of Congress who hold stock in the company to do likewise.

Only if we send a signal to these companies that their associations with Iran and other terrorist states comes at a huge price can we dissuade them from continued involvement. But if there is a massive selloff of their stock, company executives will feel the pinch in their salaries and bonuses.

Iran is in serious economic trouble. Yesterday, it announced that it would have to ration gasoline — this in a nation with the second largest proven oil reserves. But it can’t get at its oil resources without massive foreign investment. As a result, government revenues from the energy industry have dropped from $55 billion in 2006 to a projected $44 billion in 2007. In a nation where 70 percent of the labor force is employed by the government, the costs in social instability of budget cuts militated by declining energy revenues could be formidable.

Under such pressure, Iran may well have to curb its nuclear ambitions or face the prospect of overthrow by an enraged population.

Mrs. Pelosi: Do your part!

WHAT DO YOU EXPECT
Wow, is anyone surprised that Little Miss Nancy PP would do something illegal, unethical, or anti American? Her actions speak volumns about the out of touch Liberals in her home district that donate money and cast votes for her. It is time to put the the Little Miss out to the permanent pasture of political retirement. Isn't there anyone in her district with the balls to run against her in a primary?

RR

Where are all
the people who were crying about the Rep's making money off the war? All i hear are crickets from that corner right now. I have no doubt some shady Rep's made some money off the war, but at least they were not investing in the enemy. Its one thing to sell us overpriced meals and get paid for unfulfilled contracts, its quite another to get caught in bed with the enemy. I wonder how Nancy feels about the fact that its possible that her money helped pay for an IED. How could you sleep at night knowing you invested against our troops? Where are the Dem's now? I cannot wait to hear how the Rep's made money off the war to. Oh please tell us how this is ok because "they did it first". What an anti-American bunch you are, you make me sick.

Nancy Pelosi
It is just as anti-American for Republicans to support war profiteering in Iraq because it has definitely resulted in our soldiers getting shafted. Not only are they feeling insulted as soldiers for hire get paid ridiculous amounts of money for doing jobs similar to theirs for which they get paid considerably less but these soldiers have witnessed the government give contracts to civilian companies so that they can do work that more qualified soldiers would do better. In other words, the government pays a civilian a ton of money to fix a tank but a soldier could fix it better and gets paid considerably less. That puts our soldiers in danger because the best people, soldiers, are not being allowed to do crucial jobs like vehicle maintenance. That happens all the time in Iraq. The government wastes money having civilians do jobs that our soldiers could and should be doing themselves. Meanwhile when our soldiers ask for armored vehicles the government acts like it cannot afford them. Why? It is giving too much money to private contractors. Consequently, our soldiers are getting blown to bits in unarmored vehicles. It does not get more unAmerican than that. You Republicans need to get your heads out of the sand for a moment and look at "Iraq For Sale". Talk about unAmerican activities. As far as Pelosi goes, prove that she knew that company was dealing with countries that support or sponsor terrorism. I have investments myself that I know nothing about in the sense of being aware of what specific companies I am invested in. I just put money in a money market fund and that is it. Perhaps Pelosi was ignorant of the nature of Alcatel. Ever consider that? Probably not. All you care about is bashing Dems and Libs. Typical conservative hypocritical bull.

Mr_Ant
I would like to know what your qualifications are for the statements you have made. Basically your post says that all military contractors are bad and the military could do it far cheaper.
Interesting.
I was in the military for over 24.5 years and I have been working with the military for the last 7 years as a contractor.
First of all, contractors are required because Slick Willie decided we needed fewer troops and less training for the troops we have. Let me break that down for you. Fewer troops mean that there are not enough personnel to do the job required, so outside contractors are hired to do it. Less training means that the troops are not quailfied to do the jobs. So, once again outside contractors have to do it for them.
If you would look at the economics of the situation, it would tell you that it is not cheaper to have the military doing the job. The US govt. pays for the housing, food, medical, etc. for the troops. The US Govt. also gives the troop additional money if they are married and have a family. This is for the entire time that the person is in the military. If the person retires from the military, the US govt. pays the retirement, disability, medical (at least a portion)for the rest of that persons life. They will also give the spouse an income if the person dies. If the person is injured, the the US govt. will pickup the entire bill, and part of the bill for the military family.
Contractors are supplied with NONE or only a small part of the above. So, economically it is cheaper to hire a contractor.
If you are whining about how much the contractors are being over paid. Then you go away from your friends and family for months at a time, suffer the same conditions that the military do, depend upon the military to defend you in a fire fight (note, contractors are NOT a priority with the military for protection) You should also blame the military oversight (which is on every military contract) for allowing those charges to go through.
Of course none of this has to do with Nancy Pelosi who has shown through her actions that she is part of the blame America crowd. And I personally think she should be charged with treason for aiding and abbeting the enemy. Not only by investing in a terror sponsoring company, but also by going to our enemys without state department knowledge or approval and then informing the world how good they are. This gives the terrorists a will to go on and kill more Americans.
Am I the one with my head in the sand, or is it some liberal who believes everything they are told by the MSM, and the rest of the left.
That's enough. I am tired of trying to convince someone about the real world, instead of "feeling good" about what is said (notice I didn't say what is actually done).

Mr Ant
Without being able to find the article "Iraq for Sale" in a quick google search I cannot refute what you say. However if your accusations are true then I will concede to you that what is going on is disagreeable.

However, I am sure that Ms. Pelosi is a shrewd businesswoman and knows where her money is invested. For you to claim ignorance for her is exactly the tactic of "It's not my fault I didn't know." that I have come to expect from the liberals. It is this attitude of not standing up and saying I am sorry I was wrong that is a fundamental problem in this society. This is an attitude that I have seen from both parties but is much more prevalent in the left. The best example was are former president who went as far as blaming Kenneth Starr for doing his job!

In short all I would want from Ms. Pelosi (besides resigning and going away) is standing up and saying I am sorry I made a mistake. I have sold the stock and donated the money to one of the soldier funds.

So hard
It was difficult to write "shrewd" instead of "shrew".

I forget who...Larry975
But gee this strikes me as a typical left double standard. Who was it that had soome conflicts of interests on the republican side of the house and he was canned. Now we have Red Nancy with stocks in companies that support terror? WTF? She commits treason over and over and still maintains the position of speaker of the house? Newt had nothing compared to Red Nancy or Feinstein. Can somebody get me a barf bag?
Larry, I'm with you o that...it does suck, but I am glad there are guys willing to do it. The troops benefit from much of your experiences as prior service. I call that capitalism and the left just likes to whine about it because they have no balls to go do it themselves.

It's Called Padding Your Bets!
__ The driving force of liberal mentality, bet on the winner, and bet on the loser to win. Either way they will be in a position to express alliance to the winning results,or the losing results. Remember Bill, and Hillary's Clintons,"blind trust" investments totalling between $10 to $50 million dollars. Investments in oil,and drug companies,Wal-Mart, military contractors. All investments the,Clintons say, were handled by trusties over the years without their knowledge.GET A CLUE! How many people in the U.S.,president,or president wanna-be's,have no knowledge of how their bank account is growing. The Clinton's were padding their bets.Whoever controlled the purse strings,by whatever ideology, they were insuring a connection.A blind connection to support passionate appeals against these investment sources, while having the ability to quickly change support.Of course when light was shown upon the venture, they had the ability to "wash their hands" of the connection, which they promptly did.Pandora Pelosi will do the same,as she coddles the liberal base with blind denials. This will overwhelmingly be embraced by a base that blindly pads their bets for self gain.

Forget Talking to our Enemy
I like Dick Morris but I also want my Pension check from Lucent to continue. Should I decline my check?

Anyhow I think better communications is the best way to bring whats right and whats really going on to the oppressed. It will lead in the end to the demise of these THUG Arab Muslims that have invaded the Persian culture of Iran.

Nancy Pelosi's Investments
This is just another example of hypocritical liberals and their "Do as I say, not as I do" attitude. They all seem to think they are above reproach and most especially above the rubble (us).

Pelosi
This is so simple. It's a typical leftist double standard, it's the same elitist crap over and over again. It's "do as I say not as I do", it's "I am so smart and you're just the little people I'm not accountable to little people". Pelosi said she would fix corruption in DC, what a joke, she is a politician, she lied, she's part of the problem.

Pelosi, leader of the democrat socialist left in the house is a traitor, pure and simple. Investments with enemy states, talking to the enemy, hmmm, sounds like treason to me. Mr Ant, the lame excuse that she did not know her investment portfolio included a company doing business with an enemy state does not fly. Any major stockholder is constantly apprised of the company business and prospects for profit.

Mr_Ant was so upset about the DU, KOS, MoveOn crap he believes, if he were a real American he would be more upset about what the democrat leadership is doing in actively supporting our enemies. In my opinion the democrat left is responsible for some of our soldier's deaths. The left continuoulsy gives our enemies hope.

Dick, this is pretty lame...
Anyone who has any experience in the stock market knows that up until pretty recently the most widely held stock in the US was AT&T. Lucent was a direct spin off of AT&T's fiber optic and equipment maker (and includes the legendary Bell Labs). So this means everyone who owned AT&T got shares of Lucent. Initially, Lucent's stock was very hot but eventually the it tanked and languished for a long time. Many who owned 'LU' held for years hoping for a comeback (you know who you are).
Last year, Alcatel, a French telecom equipment maker, stepped forward to merge with/buy Lucent. So basically, almost everyone in the US who owned AT&T shares got Lucent stock and now owns shares of a Alcatel-Lucent-literally millions of shareholders across the country.
Now, I can't stand Nancy Pelosi's left-wing politics. And if Dick wants to call on Nancy to sell her ex-Lucent, now Alcatel shares, so be it. But then, I would also call on all of you to check your own portfolios (including any mutual funds that you may have that hold 'ALU') and sell all of your shares of this company that 'investments in terror countries.'

Peace be with you.

Pelosi Invests
I am sending each of "my" congressmen a very simple RFI: Please state your net financial assets at date of election and current net assets.

Anyone want to bet that I receive an (honest) answer?

mathactor, et al
Did a search on Dogpile and found plenty of references to "Iraq for Sale". Evidently it is out on dvd and described as a "progressive look at war profiteering." Progressive meaning liberal. I doubt that there will any mention of ms fienstien and her hubby.
You can purchase the dvd on Amazon for anyone who is interested.

cfountain72
Yep, you are correct in your points. However, our politicans are expected to know better and to know exactly where their hard earned (puke) money is being invested. At least I believe the Republicans are being held to that standard.
Now, imagine if this were a Republican, the story would be all over the msm. There is not one mention of this nor has there ever been a mention of fienstien. So, fairness doctrine anyone?

blustrmom/grndmomx2
Thank you for your kind words. Yes, one would hope that that they should 'know better.' My guess is that she (along with 80% of the people at that level of politics) do not even manage their own portfolios; they have money managers who do that for them. Furthermore, a lot of politicians have blind trusts and don't even know what they own, to avoid conflicts of interest.
It's safe to say that most Republicans in office DO have some shares of ALU in their portfolios, either owned directly or through their mutual funds. In fact, I bet most of the registered users of Townhall.com unknowingly own some ALU in the same manner, perhaps in their 401k.
Now that the extent of ALU's investments and ties to these nations is known, we should expect that all of us (and our Congressmen) will be on the phone to our brokers or logging in to our etrade.com accounts to have these positions sold ASAP.

Peace be with you.

mathactor
http://iraqforsale.org/ this is what popped up in an altavista search. Looks like the Micheal Moore genre' ala Farenheit 911 and Sicko.
Here's the thing, the government is required to accept competitive bids on all contracts. The rub is: any contractor submitting a bid for work must be able to demonstrate the ability to perform and complete the work in compliance with the contract documents. Halliburton has a long and verifiable history of contract compliance and the ability to perform the tasks.

Sleezeball
This column is just further evidence that Morris, for years a Democrat-booster, remains a total sleezeball. It demeans Townhall.com to carry such nonsense.

one of Satan's Daughters NANCY PELOSI
Nancy Pelosi has been the biggest joke that has ever been the Speaker of the House. She has done every thing she can to bring America down. She has to be a member in good standing of THE FIRST CHURCH OF SATAN, because every thing she has done has been of the worst evil and aganist our Lord Jesus Christ. Nancy Pelosi would have drove the nails into the hands and feet of our SAVIOR and LORD JESUS CHRIST if she had been around 2,000 years ago. My hope and prayer is that this very EVIL daughter of Satan himself will go to a country where Satan ruls and never come back to America where no one who is a God fearing Christian would want her in power we are praying that you leave America for goodMs. Pelosi and never come back.

Roy??
Do you mean to say that what Morris wrote isn't true or just that it shouldn't be reported or discussed?? Which is it?

SENATOR FEINSTEIN MUST GO!!!

It is not enough that she just resign her chair on the military committee for abusing her power to enrich her family. The Democratic lawmakers ran on a “culture of corruption” in 06. If they mean what they say FEINSTEIN SHOULD RESIGN FROM THE SENATE! Can anyone give a good reason why Feinstein should still be in the Senate?

CC-A veteran California senator has resigned as chair of a powerful military construction committee after reports that for years she abused her position to award her husband’s companies billions of dollars in government contracts.

During her six years as chair and ranking member of the Military Construction Appropriations subcommittee, Senator Dianne Feinstein annually supervised the appropriation of billions of dollars for specific military construction projects. The San Francisco lawmaker supervised her own staff of military construction experts and she lobbied Pentagon officials to support her favorite projects.

She wielded quite a bit of power and succeeded in steering hundreds of billions of dollars in military contracts to companies partially owned by her wealthy husband, Richard Blum. One company alone earned $792 million from military construction and environmental cleanup projects approved by Feinstein’s committee and another $759 million.

Have you tried doing some actual reading before you jump at a chance to repeat that stupid line you end your posts with ? Here is a quote from an article i picked up from the AP...

"
PARIS, Dec 1 (Reuters) - Patricia Russo, chief executive of the freshly merged Franco-U.S. group Alcatel-Lucent, will be barred, as a U.S. citizen, from doing business with Iran, she said on Friday.

She did not say, however, if this would create problems for the Paris-based company which has enjoyed long-standing business relationships with Iran.

The French company upgraded Tehran's telecoms networks in a contract won in 2001, built Iran's first high-speed DSL Internet network and has been providing some communications systems for gas plants there."

But they are just an innocent tele-com right? The thoughts of idiots like you who spend more time trying to shame their opponents than searching for facts doesn't make me laugh, it makes me worry.

Still Can't Get Enough....
Must be the nature of the Beast, the more money & power they get; the more they want. Pelosi is but one of many US Traitor political "Prostitutes" who have invested in the interests of The West's Islamo-nazi Enemy.

Many other Politicians "get it".. that Iran happens to be the current primary enemy of the USA based on their repeated, direct "threats" regarding Iran's emminent strategic nuclear capabilites & goals.
Pelosi's contemptible, opportunistc "Conflict of Interests" is an outrage due to her position of leadership. She needs to forfeit One or the Other!

Yes, Libtards, it should be reported, and it should be discussed...

oh wait a minute
So it is ok if George bush and his daddy, part of the carlyle group, invest all over the middle east????

Dick morris is ridiculous.

RE: Senator Feinstein Must GO
John Konop, You are right and I second the motion that Diane "Frankenstein" should go... She should also take that other Two-faced Hippocrite Witch from San Fransico with her.. Thanks for the link included with your post.

Fellow Posters... Let's don't lose the momentum from the crash & burning of the Amnesty fiasco...we still need to pursue 1)that promised border fense, and 2)Kill the commie "Fairness Doctrine".

Please, remember to thank the good Senators who voted for America. I am also very Proud of You All for your time & efforts in making it happen!

Nancy's Millions
So, another stockholder is hung out to dry, and this time properly. After all, if Nancy Pelosi is so smart as the Speaker of the House, why isn't she smart enough to give instructions to her broker and trust officers to keep her investments our of such asinine traps. I'm tired of hearing the excuses, especially about spin-offs and mergers. Simple instructions and an intelligent broker would keep her out of trouble.

So, there's no excuse. Remove her from office [and save millions of travel funds] and make her an example as a terrorist-lover [or at least facilitator] who must be drummed out of any important national position. American security should always top private aggrandizement.

IMAGINE THAT
ACCORDING TO THESE PEOPLE THE WAR ON TERROR IS JUST A BUMPER STICKER. I TRUELY BELIVE THAT THESE LEFT WING IDIOTS SHOULD JUST MOVE TO THESE COUNTRIES THAT THEY BELIEVE ARE SO NICE

"Only if we send a signal to these
companies...."

How about we send a signal to Miss Nancy???

Why and I not surprised? Somehow Pelosi seems to have taken "double standard" to an art form.

Gee, I wonder if Beck, Hannity, and O'Reilly know about this little tid-bit yet???? LOL

They do now! LOL
.

Simply
amazing Libstains did not screach Halliburton at the top of the thread, and about every third word after.

frightened, angry and small minded
people here. You don't debate, you call anybody who disagrees with you names, and then you smear them. If I was Rush baby (popping pain killers and popping viagra) you'd be drooling at the mouth if even every word I said as a complete and utter lie. You folks just have no authority from, nor are you respected by, the overwhelming majority of Americans. You have no built in BS detector, which is patently pathetic. But it keeps Rush and Coulter and O'rally in millions as you eat up their baloney, enriching them to unheard of heights, while inflaming you folks on issues that you don't even understand. They laugh at you people just as soon as they exit the stage, laughing all the way to the bank. What a paltry political party, is the GOP, and how far they have fallen.
Unbelievable, but hey, that's what got you into permanent minority status, so enjoy the show ;-)

C'mon guys. I'm no Pelosi fan, but let's be read. A multimillionaire has < $15,000 in stock in an AT&T spinoff and you're all freaked out over it? Seriously, grasping at straws like this makes us look like Democrats.

The Engineer
You sound like a reasonable person... With all due respect, we are not talking about "a multimillionaire". I'll grant you, there are way too many American profiteers invested in and facilitating our Mideast enemies.
The point is, how many Speakers of the House of US Representatives are there, and who vowed they would preside over the "most ethical Congress in the history of the US"... LOL
Oh well, maybe San Fransico Nan figured that since she had blown it so badly since the the first week; she may as well go whole hog....

Her and her Ilk need to get off the tax funded payroll!

Selective outrage indeed!!!

Are you for real? Are you actually a pastor? If so, I would quickly get as far away from your church as possible.

This daughter of Satan nonsense is superstitious garbage, unworthy of anyone with half a brain.

No, I am not a Pelosi admirer, but daughter of Satan etc - give me a break! If you are really a minister and not simply exploiting the title, you should attend a decent seminary. Among those recommended: Yale, Harvard, Union, Duke, Chandler (Emory), Perkins (SMU), Princeton, and many others. There you would learn useful information and not foolish nonsense.

WOW
I do believe that all during the 04 and 06 elections all we heard was how the BUSH/CHENEY/
HALIBURTON combo was filling their pockets on the war. This is why we will not go to war with IRAN. the DEMS are like the FRENCH/RUSSIANS and the CHINESE with the FOOD FOR OIL scandals. They are in over their heads. I bet soon we will see that allot of Congress has stock in IRAN and that is why the DEMS will do nothing to IRAN. Isnt it funny that when the other side is in controll how all the problems that occurred before they took office all of a sudden isnt that important anymore. NANCY P.(100 DAY PLAN)
