The Three-Dimensional Presidential Primaries

Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

All the polling and analysis of the 2008 presidential primaries neatly bifurcate their consideration into partisan categories. In the Democratic primary, Clinton, Obama and Edwards face off, while in the Republican contest, the polls take measure of Giuliani, McCain, Romney and, depending on their assumptions, Gingrich and Fred Thompson.

But this analysis fundamentally ignores one of the most important elements in the looming contest of 2008: the likelihood that independents and even Republicans may enter the Democratic primary to support or oppose Hillary Clinton. So polarizing is her candidacy that the migration into the Democratic primary could be enormous, even so large as to overshadow the core Democratic partisans who always vote in their party’s contests.

In all, 24 states — including big ones like California, Texas, Ohio, Michigan, and Illinois — with a combined 56 percent of America’s population permit independents to vote in the Democratic primary; 19 states, with 39 percent of the population, let anyone vote in either primary, even if they are registered in the opposite party. More importantly, among the early states, Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina have completely open primaries and permit voters to choose whichever primary they wish.

California law is particularly odd (as is often the case with that state). Independents can vote only in the Democratic primary — not in the Republican contest. This provision virtually assures a massive influx of unaffiliated voters into the Clinton-Obama battle.

Crossovers were an important factor the last time both parties had simultaneous nominating processes. In 2000, Bush and Gore wrapped up most of the votes of the loyalists of their respective parties while challengers McCain and Bradley split the independent vote. Had either McCain or Bradley not run, it is possible that the remaining candidate would have gotten so many independent votes that he might have been nominated.

But in 2008, all the gravitational pull will be into the Democratic primary. If Giuliani is well ahead by primary season, the GOP contest could turn out to be anti-climactic. But even if the Republican primary will be fought closely, none of the candidates has the same potential to attract or repel voters as Hillary Clinton.

So which will it be? Will Hillary attract or repel independent voters? The Gallup organization recently released a composite of its polling on Hillary among independents over the past three years. It found that while Democrats hold a favorable opinion of the former first lady by 83 percent to 13, independents break in her favor by only 51 percent to 43. Republicans, needless to say, dislike her: Among GOPers the favorable rating is only 20 percent to 76.

Given these data, two factors would indicate that the crossover voting laws may spell trouble for Hillary:

If she only leads Obama by 5 to 10 points among Democrats when she has an 83-13 favorability rating, she will likely do much worse among independents.

The passion and the depth of animus against Hillary, particularly among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents, may be so intense as to motivate them to participate in the Democratic primary in great numbers.

Most current polling fails to capture the likelihood of crossover voting. News media surveys generally ask Democrats what they think about the Democratic field and Republicans what they think about the GOP contenders. Since half the states do not permit independents, much less members of the opposite party, to enter the primaries, few national samples ask independents what they are likely to do.

Those that do tend not to divide their samples along the lines of each state’s law; fewer still ask Republicans if they will vote in the Democratic primary. So crossover voting is a blind spot in most current polling.

All strategists and pollsters need to amend their thinking to view the primaries as the three-dimensional processes they really are.

Wishful Thinking on Morris's Part
Republicans are going to be having a healthy contest on their side. This talk about Giuliani have a large lead is amazing. I don't many of the base who would prefer him over Fred Thompson.

hackamore
It's more wishful than you may think. Morris is doing everything in his feeble power to keep the Hildabeast from getting elected, because if It does, Dick's body will turn up somewhere in Fort Marcy Park.

I voted for Howard Dean.
I may vote for Obama this primary season. Its great messing up the Democrat process.

If only they truly understood how a republic should work, they wouldn't have guys like me helping eliminate their candidates...

The most current polling . . .
The most current polling--from the fair and balanced T.V. network that regularly features Dick Morris--has Hillary ahead of Obama by 21 points. Surely Morris knows this. I wonder why he doesn't incorporate this interesting little tid bit of information into his analysis.

Silliness
Morris' commentaries are difficult to understand.
But what can you expect from a man with a toe in his mouth?

Suppose Condi Ran?
Suppose, for the sake of discussion, that the GOP should nominate Condoleeza Rice. Would Republicans vote for a woman at all? It's clear they hate Hillary, but then she is of the other party. Would they support a female candidate of their own party?

Next, would they under any circumstances support a black candidate, Condoleeza being one? We hear a lot about Obama being unqualified, "empty", inexperienced, and...by the way...black, and even maybe a closet Muslim. So would they support a black candidate of their own party?

Condoleeza would be a double-whammy candidate, both female and black. But if she were the Republican choice, and the alternative were a Democrat, what would conservative voters do?

It's impressive that she isn't running. Ordinarily a competent Secretary of State might be considered as a candidate.

Rudy & Fox News
People can like someone (favorability ratings) that they don't necessarily agree with. This is why Giuliani has defied ALL the experts. People like Rudy. They think, based on his career as Mayor and his stellar performance on 9/11, would make a good President -- maybe not a great one, but a good one.

That said . . .

Hi: I’m doing a piece (or two) on Fox News. I am very much a conservative, but I have problems with the network. Yes, there are some things on it that are very good (Ollie’s war stories, Edie, Liz Trotta, Britt Hume, Sean). However, although I’m not against “fair and balanced,” I am against fair and boring. The graphics are too 1970s and some of the personalities (Shep Smith, Allen Colmes, and even Bill O’Reilly) are getting tedious. They badly need some tough-minded, smart types like Kyra Phillips (CNN) and Chris Jansing (MSNBC). The morning show is unwatchable. The business show on the weekend strikes me as a bunch of overpaid Wall Street types shouting at each other. The multiple layers of lip glop on female news readers isn’t really that appealing. Maybe it’s just me, but I’d love to get some other opinions from conservatives. You can put a comment on my blog (click on name above) or send me an e-mail at: TalkTop65@aol.com. I’d really appreciate finding out if I’m alone – or if some of you have some of the same problems. Thanks for your input.. NOTE; I'M GETTING SOME OUTSTANDING COMMENTS FROM TH PEOPLE. THEY RANGE FROM A LIBERAL OR TWO WHO HATES IT, TO PEOPLE WHO ADORE IT. MOST ARE OF THE "I LIKE/LOVE FOX, BUT . . ." VARIETY. ONE COLUMN WILL APPEAR MONDAY A.M. EARLY, THE OTHER TUESDAY A.M. THANKS TO ALL.

Lilly re: Condi
I don't think race is an issue; however, she's an absolute novice, completely inexperienced in electoral politics. Running her would be a huge mistake, as she'd get creamed.

Also, SecState isn't really a political qualification for much. In recent times (if ever) not one has run for top elective office.

RudyObama
Dick conveniently forgot that Edwards is leading in IA and it is a 3 way race on the Dem side. If Edwards is abducted by space aliens and Gore does not come in, Oboma may get the nomination (the anti Hillary) in a head to head with Clinton.

I am sure most of the Reps and Rep leaners will be voting in the Rep primaries. Rudy is not going to run away with the nomination. That is wishful NY thinking by Dick and has been for months. Rudy has lost 8 points from his peak a few weeks ago. He was going south about as fast as McCain. Both may be stabilizing.

Almost all of the polls I see do measure cross over effects but it is buried in the extended cross tabs. They may not report it in the pablum that they print for the masses but they are polling it and know all about the cross over. They can report it if they feel it is a story and will sell ads.

Dick is spinning. Hopeing to construct the reality he wants (a Rudy/Obama race)?

Where are the debates?
I wish the front-runners would stop chickening out on the debates and start a long line of them. I would like to see some tough questions leveled at these wafflers and see how they fare. I think they'll expose themselves for the anti-American, globalist, world government sell-outs that they are.

Condi?
Geez...Can anyone think of running someone that is NOT a member of the traitorous Council on Foreign Relations? Condi is a member too.

Contact reps and tell them NO AMNESTY
Nutcase said:

"Let's get real..........................
..............Can you speak mexican. If not we gonna have to learn. Cause or traitorous president and senate is about to turn the country over to mexico with this amnesty bill."

Good point. I hope everyone is writing, calling and faxing your reps to tell them not to vote for any stinkin' amnesty bills.

Yes, Condi for 2008
Lily, I agree, Secretary of State Condi would be an excellent candidate for 2008.

Poor Brian, he seems to forget that most of the presidents of our early nation had come from their serving as Secretary of State first. (Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Martin Van Buren, and James Buchanan).
Foreign policy experience is one key factor which makes Condi Rice one of the strongest assets coming from the Bush Administration. In fact, she would become VP if anything happened to take out Cheney.
Even Prof. Larry Sabato has been quoted on record in statements that IF Condi became VP, the entire GOP field is tossed upside down and it is an NEW ballgame.

The Democrats and the media try to wrap the Iraq war around Condi's neck but she is not running the Pentagon. She is not running the military, she is the diplomatic wing taking care of N Korea and the meetings with Olmert and Abbas along with the Arab League. Those relationships are important for the next administration.

Does anyone remember the backlash against Speaker Pelosi for trying to create the image of a Shadow Government? I was amazed at how many reporters took Pelosi to the woodshed for trying to act like a Secretary of State. So the media understands the Power of Condi, and they keep scratching their heads at her 58% job approval rating.

Recently, Secretary Condi was also a guest on Medved's show and said Don Imus's comments were disgusting about the Rutger's women's basketball team. She is the best GET for any radio station and when she appears, her words have meaning to the listeners.

I hope that when President Bush whispers into Condi's ear that the nation needs her to run in 2008, she will say, YES, I will RUN!!!

merry_go_boy
Huh? What are you talking about? What contest?

lilly
I can't speak for anyone else, but I would vote for a black candidate or a woman. That matters to me much less than the persons positions.

Do you remember Alan Keyes? When he was a candidate, I listened to him take questions from an audience and expound on his positions and views on a wide range of topics. No notes, and as far as I could tell, no question was off the table. He knows what he believes and he can articulate his positions well.

Unfortunately, he wasn't allowed in any of the presidential debates and I haven't heard much from him since, except for the last minute run for some position in Illinois or Indiana.

Fred Thompson - Rudy Giuliani
Would be damnere unbeatable.

Fred Thompson - Condi Rice would be nice.

"Among GOPers the favorable rating [for Hillarly]is only 20%..."
Who in the world are those people????

first things first
Liberty and "nutcase" are RIGHT! Before we elect a new Prez, we need to stop the pending Scamnesty bills! Duncan Hunter and Tom Tancredo have their minds right... Mitt might, but I have not checked his position this week.

Folks, the very survival of the American heritage, culture, common language, socio-economic stability and well-being, indeed the American Way itself are in DIRE JEOPARDY!

The Conspiracy Of Evil (miscreant employers leaning on taxpayers, anti-America PC liberals seeing future big govt. voters, scandal-plagued catholic church leaders seeking replacement contributors, national pols seeking latino votes, and ILLEGAL alien advocate groups seeking American jobs and welfare) is monied, organized, devious, and determined.

That "cheap" labor is nothing of the sort! Per Heritage, each household headed by an undereducated ILLEGAL alien will cost taxpayers $22k a year in deficit taxes versus services used alone! And that is just the tip of the iceberg of their total costs! GET INVOLVED TO STOP THE INVASION NOW FOLKS-- BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE! AMERICA WOULD BE A TERRIBLE THING TO WASTE!
