Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

There was good news this week for both soon-to-be candidate Fred Thompson and growing-by-the-hour candidate Barack Obama. The Los Angeles Times survey of April 5-9 found that former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson had moved into second place – ahead of the seriously damaged McCain – in the GOP presidential primary. This is an amazing showing for an undeclared candidate.

And on the Democratic side, an online vote conducted by liberal anti-war group, Moveon.org showed Obama in first place, with Edwards close behind, as the best candidate to lead the U.S. out of Iraq. Hillary came in fifth, after Kunich and Richardsen. This does not auger well for Hillary, who has been trying to move further to the left on the war and cultivate the anti-war vote.

THE REPUBLICANS:

THOMPSON OVERTAKES MCCAIN

The surprisingly positive results for Thompson in the L.A. Times survey may be the final impetus that convinces him to jump into the race. There have been several recent indications that Thompson is abut to declare.

First, his public disclosure that he was diagnosed with lymphoma several years ago and is now in remission could only have been made to pave the way for his entry in the Republican primary. A potential candidate would have to get that information out before someone leaked it. And, on the other hand, if Thompson was not a candidate, he would have no reason to divulge that personal information.

Thompson has also scheduled a number of high profile appearances in Washington, including the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast, a meeting with 40-50 Republican Congressman, and a speech at the influential Lincoln Club in Orange County, California. A Thompson adviser, Mark Corallo, said that the schedule of events are "indications that Fred is taking this very seriously."

The vibes in Washington certainly suggest that Thompson is about to jump into the race, probably declaring his candidacy in May.

The L.A. Times poll showed Guiliani leading the field, as usual, at 29% but with Thompson in second place at 15%. McCain fell to third place at 12%. Poor Mitt Romney still can't get no respect and trailed at 8%. The results were as follows:

GIULIANI 29%

THOMPSON 15%

MC CAIN 12%

ROMNEY 8%

GINGRICH 7%

HUCKABEE 3%

Source: LA Times

The Thompson numbers are important in two respects: They show that McCain is continuing to slip and slide as his campaign seems to lose momentum every day. But they also matter because Newt Gingrich, the other looming presence over the race, is badly trailing behind the undeclared Thompson, who seems to be picking up Newt's voters. So if Newt stays out until September, as he has vowed he would, the survey indicates that Fred would obliterate him in the meantime and make it all but impossible for him to run. It looks like Republicans are still looking for an ideal candidate and take Thompson quite seriously.

If Thompson were to run, he would fight an all-out battle with Giuliani for conservative Republicans. A recent Gallup Poll found that 22% of self-described pro-life Republicans – who constitute 2/3 of the GOP primary turnout – still vote for Rudy despite his widely known pro-choice position. Gallup has Rudy in first place among those pro-life voters, although by less than the 33% he gets from those who are pro-choice.

But Fred Thompson would give Rudy a real run for his money among these social conservatives. Significantly, in the LA Times poll, Thompson received more support from Christian conservatives – 21%- than any of the other candidates. Giuliani followed with 17% and McCain trailed with 10%.

My bet is that Rudy will still prevail because terrorism trumps abortion as an issue for the GOP right, but it could get close.

MCCAIN CONTINUES TO FALTER

In general, things are not looking good for McCain. He continues to fall in the polls, raised only $12.5 million in the first quarter, and has started laying off some of his campaign staff. The campaign finance reports that must be filed this week-end will show whether he has any money on hand.

McCain's hawkish pro-Bush position on Iraq may well doom him. He delivered a speech at VMI this week in which he claimed that the Iraq war was "necessary and just," a sentiment that the majority of Americans disagree with. Still, he might be able to appeal to the conservative base and pick up points for his honesty and his strength in espousing an unpopular position that he believes in.

He's got a lot of obstacles to overcome before he can improve his standing. And, he didn't help himself last week when he claimed that Baghdad was now safe enough to shop in one of the city's open markets. Of course, McCain was no ordinary shopper. After it was revealed that he was surrounded by a 100-member armed delegation, three Blackhawk helicopters, two Apache gunships, and wore a flak jacket, Mc Cain looked ridiculous and lost credibility.

Mc Cain hasn't formerly announced yet. If he can't raise money and can't improve his poll numbers, he might just have to forget about it.

ANNE ROMNEY SAYS MITT'S MORMON RELIGION IS NOT A PROBLEM

Mitt Romney's wife, Anne, told an Alabama audience that her husband's Mormon religion would not be a problem once people got to know him. The Romneys have good reason to address the issue: More than 29% of American voters in a recent Washington Post/ABC Poll indicated that they would not vote for a Mormon for President. And, in a recent Gallup poll, 46% of the respondents had a negative view of Mormons, while only 46% had a positive view.

Those who attend church weekly had the strongest negative views about Mormons, with Protestants weighing in as significantly more negative than their Catholic counterparts.

The disapproval of the Mormon religion may be the single biggest obstacle for a Romney candidacy. He is attractive and charismatic, a proven fund raiser, and was a successful governor of Massachusetts. Still, he has not been able to move his support into double digits and concerns about his religion may well prevent him from moving into the top teir of the Republican candidates.

It's possible that he'll be able to do what John Kennedy did in 1960 to combat anti-Catholic criticism. He needs to speak openly and honestly about his religion, so that voters understand what role his religion would play – if any – in the White House.

THE DEMOCRATS:

TROUBLE FOR HILLARY ON THE LEFT

Hillary's poor showing in the Moveon.org online vote on 'which candidate would best lead us out of Iraq' is important because it is the first real indication of how the anti-war left feels about the Democratic contenders on the Iraq War issue.

They don't like Hillary.

While the sampling is not at all scientific, it is still interesting because of the heft of Moveon.org among the activist left. While only about 42,000 people voted, the results certainly indicate that the left is getting sick of Hillary's evasiveness on the war.

The Moveon.org numbers were:

Obama 28%

Edwards 25%

Kucinich 17%

Richardson 12%

Clinton 11%

Biden 6%

Dodd 1%

Again, caution, this is not a scientific poll of anything, but it does serve as a warning indicator that Hillary may be alienating the left in her bid to stay close enough to the center to win in the general election.

To finish in fifth place among leftist activists - behind Richardson and Kucinich certainly isn’t a good showing for the Democratic front runner.

Obama and Edwards were the top choices, and one of them will likely get the support and endorsement of the group. That will be worth a lot because of their organizing and fund raising abilities.

Good News for Edwards

While other candidates have been getting more media attention, Edwards has been quietly building a lead in Iowa. Virtually every poll shows him in first place. And, in New Hampshire, he and Obama are tied for second place behind Clinton.

He's still in the top tier and can't be ignored.

Edwards' second place showing in the Moveon.org vote, a few points behind Obama is also interesting. Obama’s indication on the Letterman show that he would likely be satisfied to vote for a war funding bill without a withdrawal schedule but with fuzzy language about the need for a political and diplomatic solution to the war may alienate the Movon.org crowd. That language won’t appease the left by a long shot. The Moveon.org vote indicates that Edwards might be ideally positioned to move to the left of Hillary and Obama over the war funding issue and pick up even more support.

Obama and Hillary both face a crucial decision when the war funding resolution comes to a vote. If they vote for the fuzzy language compromise that Obama appeared to endorse on Letterman, they open the way for Edwards. With his domestic message of protectionism and anti-globalism not selling, Edwards could become the anti-war candidate and get back into this race if the two front runners oblige him by shooting themselves in the foot over the war funding resolution.

What Makes Obama Gain?

Obama's fund raising success and his growing standing in the polls begs the question: Why is he moving up?

The key reason is that he is the opposite of Hillary Clinton. He not only gets the votes of anyone who doesn't like Hillary, he benefits by the contrast with her.

In fact, Obama's personality and characteristics might be dull and boring in another time in another contest. He might, without Hillary, be a reincarnation of Al Gore, notable for his failure to keep his audience awake.

But now he excites the voters not just as the first black candidate but also as the opposite of the characteristics we find negative in the former first lady.

He is cool to her hot. He is mellow to her stridency. He ponders problems and issues intellectually while all we get from Hillary is straight ahead advocacy and rhetoric. She is scripted. He appears natural and spontaneous. She comes across and calculating and opportunistic. He seems to be sincere and open.

While she voted for the war, backed it, and now twists herself into a pretzel explaining her past and current positions. But Obama was always anti-war and still is, plain and simple. Most voters think Hillary read the polls before she speaks. Obama seems to shoot from the hip and read his conscience.

Hillary is part of a very old story while Obama is brand new. Hillary's marriage has been the stuff of national news and controversy for more than a decade. Obama’s private life is still private. Hillary left Washington one step ahead of the sheriff carting the White House china with her. Obama has never had a serious brush with ethics (apart from an ill considered land deal in Illinois for which he apologized).

Hillary flaunts her firstness, constantly citing the fact that she may become the first woman to serve as president. But Obama, just as dramatic a first, rarely alludes to it and lets voters draw their own conclusions. Hillary's campaign strategy appears to be rooted in demographics while Obama's is more conventional and is not based on his black support.

It is everything about Obama that seems to contrast with everything about Hillary. And that is his strength.

The Three Dimensional Primary

If, as we suspect, Rudy faces off with Fred Thompson in the Republican Primary and Hillary takes on Obama in the Democratic contest, it's important to see the primaries not as separate and distinct, but as one combined primary.

At least half the states, including California, allow independents to vote in either party primary. With more people identifying as Independents than as either Democrats or Republicans, their presence in the primaries is crucial.

So the fact is that each of these four final candidates is running, not just against his or her party opponent, but against all three other potential nominees. In 2000, for example, Bill Bradley, running for the Democratic nomination, and John McCain, fighting for the Republican nod, both out polled Gore and Bush among Independents. In fact, the only reason McCain was able to win in New Hampshire was his overwhelming support among Independents. Bush beat him handily among Republicans.

In 2000, in a sense, McCain beat Bradley in their unspoken and informal Independent Primary and attracted more Independents into the Republican primary to vote for him than Bradley could attract into the Democratic contest where he was a candidate.

But next year, it may not be a question of which candidate Independents like the most but who they like the least. The primaries may break down into a pro-Hillary and an anti-Hillary contest in which Independents are more concerned to stop the former first lady in the Democratic primary than they are with whether Guiliani or Fred Thompson are the Republican nominee. Since neither of the Republicans incites much antipathy, but Hillary does, it is very likely that lots of Independents will choose to vote in the Democratic primary for Obama so as to stop their bete noire from getting elected.

In some states, even Republicans can vote in the Democratic primaries (and vice-versa). Even dedicated GOP voters might switch into the Democratic primary to stop Hillary.

So each candidate in the semi-finals has to pay attention to the entire field, not just to their specific primary. That will make strategizing this race very, very interesting.

GunnyG
My previous post needs clarification. I want to make it clear that I know that you in no way would EVER sell out your country. I know you are a patriotic American.

BTW-- Ron Paul on Lou Dobbs tonight
He's scheduled; however, with the recent killings in West Virginia, he may be postponed again. These shootings are absolutely horrible, but I'll sure bet you the gun banners will be out in full force. Makes me puke.

GunnyG
By the way, some of my heroes are George Washington, George Patton, John Wayne, Barry Goldwater and THIS man, Ron Paul.

GunnyG
Actually, they rated Ron Paul as B+.

Gunny, we have been through this before. Yes, I support Ron Paul and I do that for a reason. He's not a globalist, socialist pig who is more than willing to sell out his country. It doesn't matter if we "win", if we end up electing someone who is such a globalist. Thompson's membership in the CFR, whose leadership from the very top propose to erode U.S. sovereignty and install world government, puts him in this category. Why do you think he belongs to this group? He's not stupid or ill-informed. If we elect someone of this nature, we have not won anything. In fact, it will be more of the same as we have experienced with Dubya. Conservatives went to sleep thinking they had one of their own in office and allowed him to flat out sprint in destroying our country.

So, do what you have to do. I'm not selling out my country just to get someone with an "R" in office. I'm voting for someone who has proven time and time again, he stands for limited government, fiscal responsibility in government, personal responsibility, individual liberty, a strong national defense and sound money.

Plus, Gunny, he has made his position more than clear on the UN, as he has entered the same legislation, every year, to get the U.S. out of this stinking socialist organization. He also has the highest rating possible from Gun Owners' of America... an A+.

If people would truly vote their consciences and get out an work for this man, there is no reason why he could not win. That is, unless we have just thrown up our hands and agreed that we will allow the MSM or the "Party" heads, pick our President. None for me, thanks.

Magnificus
I missed your subsequent post that they "checked out". My concern is that we must elect someone who will not support the current "open borders" agenda that is being supported from both sides of the aisle. That also includes a strong stance against the non-free trade agreements, NAFTA, CAFTA, OMAN, etc. And this SPP (Security and Prosperity Partnership) BS has gotta go. Because it is through this that they are merging our countries. FOIA docs here on a site setup by the Minuteman Project
http://stopspp.com/stopspp/?page_id=11
and here, on Judicial Watch
http://judicialwatch.org/SPP.shtml

Do you agree?

Do you know where Thompson stands on these issues?

Magnificus
That's a good question. I don't know. To be honest with you, I wasn't particularly enamored with the B+ they gave Ron Paul either.

If you find out, let me know.

GunnyG
Those are pretty good heroes there, Gunny. Nice job.

BTW Lilly
Bush is not my hero. Too far to the left for my tastes.

My heroes include: Chesty Puller, Gen Patton, Ronald Reagan, Manila John Basilone.

But let's discuss YOUR HERO, The Impeached One and his wife Hitlary.

lilly dear
I was going to reply but Hockey Goon's reply is spot-on.

So Dear, we're still waiting for your reply...three hours later.

JP: Thank you!
Where have you been? I've been getting reamed by the squishies (the automatic GOP vote) for coming to the same conclusion on basically the same arguments. Perot got 19% in 1992 and he was a nut. This time the conservatives, like me, are really PO'd (not merely disappointed like in 1992) and we are leaving or have left the party. Get a solid conservative to run independent and 2008 will be remembered as the death of one of the two divisions of the GVP.

Interesting Election Cycle
The GOP, home of conservatives , has not one true conservative running for President. I know, I know, Fred Thompson can unite the party, blah, blah, blah...Bush43 was suppose to do that with his Compassionate Conservatism. If anything, the leadership of the party has moved Left towards the Hallowed Middle. It is 1976 all over again, or is it 1968 (Nixon (a Moderate vs Rockefeller, another Moderate)? Not one of the front runners can categorically promise to say, make the Bush tax cuts stick, or remove Clinton's AMT scheduled increase in 2008. Not one frontrunner has laid out any kind of solid plan for the WOT, or simply state a la Regean that liberalism is dangerous. I heard last week that even Newt has joined the Left concerning Global Warming. Guilliani and McCain cannot hide thier disdain for the Right (Drop Dead, ran one headline).

The Democratic Frontrunners are much more interesting. Hillary and Obama are in a sprint to see how far Left they can go. This was suppose to be Hillary Time. For 6 years, the DNC set the table, allowing Hillary to triangulate issues from the Right, while the MSM all but ordered tickets to her inaugeration ball. But there was a slight problem. The Far Left -the place where all of the volunteers (you know the prepetual grad students who always flock to precinct headquarters in hopes of finding an intership or some free weed), energy, and new money (seems all to belong to Soros, Geffin, Speilberg and Streissand)exists - was still smarting over the smackdown given to thier 2004 favorite Howard Dean. Dean was on a fasttrack to the nomination, when the Iowa voters woke up and realized Dean would have gotten slaughtered by Bush. The Far Left will not let that happen again -heck Dean runs the DNC now. The Far Left never forgave the Beltway Left for Kerry's 2004 defeat. Hillary, unlike Bill never ingratiated herself with the Hollywood Jetset. She is now the Establishment Sell-out. O'Bama must have realized this way back in 2005. For he hasn't looked back. If you add everyone's cute boy, Edwards to the list, you have pretty much a three way Left Fest, with Hillary taking about 45% of the Left, O'Bama 35%, and Edwards 20%. Hillary's problem is preceptions. She is The Old Tired Warhorse (running for the Presidency for 16 years can be exhausting), and O'Bama is the fresh face with Grand Ideas (somehow Marxism, crypto fascism, and New Ageism are Grand Ideas). Those cliches, "It takes a Village", and "Politics of Meaning", just don't have the pizzazz they once had. Hillary, of course still has Bill, and unfortuantely Bill can't run again. He can still draw crowds and enthusiasim that the other candidates cannot match. Hillary's numbers peaked about 6 months ago; she has no where to go but down. O'Bama, a fresh face doesn't have the machine nor the masses behind him (it's tough to get elected with a Marxist outlook), and Edwards, well no one takes him seriously.

Prediction: no one in either party will be able to generate a bonafide Frontrunner. The August Conventions will be pretty interesting. There may not just be a third party this time around, but a fourth and fifth party as well.

Hockey Goon
The CBO made the Clinton years possible in the 1st place by allowing him to utter the words...
"It's the economy stupid."

The CBO had data showing a "trend" (at least 2 consecutive quarters) that the economy was already in recovery when he made the statement.

BUT they didn't release the report until after Clinton was IN OFFICE and we were in FULL economic recovery (3 or more 1/4s consecutively).

This is why most Libs (prodded & led by the MSM) make the claim that Bill Clinton presoded over the recovery.

It was the 1st time in history the CBO hadn't reported a "trending economy" (up or down) in history.

The 2nd time came just prior to the 2000 elections when the economy was going into the tank and the CBO wouldn't report it...Gore LOST anyway....LOL

After some research looks to be above board.
BUT considering the marks range from A - F... "c" is just middle of the road. AND PASSING!

Saaaaaaaay.....Where does the "Americans for Better Immigration" get their major funding?

Because a "c" from them sounds alot like a 'no opinion' from a liberal watchdog group, SenateMatch...

No opinion on Legal Immigration / Migrant Workers
YES on limit welfare for immigrants:
YES on visas for skilled workers:
YES on allowing more foreign workers into the US for farm work:

Vote #1 applies to LEGAL immigrants!
Vote #2 self-explanatory - SKILLED WORKERS!
Vote #3 self-explanatory - foreign farm workers.

So...
Will someone please tell me what ______ has done to deserve to be president? What problems have they solved? Where is their executive experience? What legislation did they originate?

This is applicable to every one of the candidates...and don't give me chapter and verse on Rudy either...he was a Mayor, and I can point out negatives (Bernie Kerik?) all day long about Judy Rulan-Army........

again, hmmm....
What office is Ann running for?

hmmm....
lilly writes: Gunny dear, your taxes went DOWN because your brilliant hero has BORROWED the money to finance his war. Look at history. Nations pay for their wars with taxes.

====================================

Speaking of hmmmm.....

What war was Bill Clinton paying for? Now that the facts are in and we hear that there was no surplus under his presidency:

The Clinton administration reported a surplus of $559 billion in its final four budget years. The audited numbers showed a deficit of $484 billion.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2006-08-02-deficit-usat_x.htm

A trillion dollar swing in financial position.

We also hear that the current deficet is much less then anticipated: A year ago, the CBO's forecast for the 2007 fiscal year called for a deficit of $270 billion. In the annual outlook released last month, the 2007 gap is projected at $172 billion. The December 2006 US federal budget showed a surplus of $44.5 billion. This was well above the expected $24 billion. The US federal deficit is now down to just 1.5% of GDP. When Clinton got that close they called it a surplus and MSM outlets still report it as so.

Tax revenues soared in the wake of the 2003 tax cuts. Tax collections have risen by $757 billion per annual, among the largest revenue gushers in history. Receipts, especially from high-income individuals and corporations, have been growing for some two years at nearly twice the rate of spending, which explains the falling deficit.

Only a moron would look at that ibnformation and declare it was time for a tax increase, but wait isn't that what the democrats are proposing?

To SteveL
I sure do hope Obama understands bare-knuckle campaign tactics because that's the kind that seems to win for Republicans. When John McCain rain against George W Bush in the South Carolina primary, Bush's people called up a whole lot of local voters to tell them a tidbit of gossip, that McCain had fathered an illegitimate black baby. People bought into the story, not knowing that in fact McCain and his wife had adopted a Biafran child. Then there were the RNC's phone-jamming tactics that they later admitted in court. And then we have, need I mention, the tactic that has now given our Dictionary of American Colloquial English a new verb, "to swift-boat"?

Even Ann Coulter has (not yet, anyway) called Obama a f* or a h* or a p* or a qu*. Politics is a hard-knuckle business, and if you want to give somebody a message, you have to speak a language that he understands. Which sometimes is a kick in the b*.

To Gunny
Gunny dear, your taxes went DOWN because your brilliant hero has BORROWED the money to finance his war. Look at history. Nations pay for their wars with taxes. We aren't paying for this one at all---we're putting it on our VISA, a tactic to ensure public support of the war. Give up economics and go back to shooting liberals in the head, tearing them asunder, and feeding the body parts to snarling dogs, as Peppermint has you doing in her serialized online novella "The Diary of Juliet Smith".

Observing
What I find amazing is how little press Thompson is getting. If you only read the papers and watch MSM outlets (they are not "news services" anymore) you wouldn't even know Thompson was considering a run. John Effing Kerry is getting more attention because he's personally leaked his intentions of considering another loss. It's only on the political websites that Fred's run is common knowledge. Imagine how he'll poll when/if he actually runs.

Giuliani only has two things going for him, he's considered electable and he's the only "strong" (in comparison) horse running on the Republican side. Thompson trumps both of those qualitities The current Republican choice is bread and water or nothing, Rudy wins. Throw Fred in the race and you can have cake and ice cream or you can have bread and water, who wins now?

Political Analysis
Thank you Mr. Morris, I tink this is the best political analysis i have read thus far. I hope Hillary does get the nomination and I'm really beginning to root for Thompson. Either way it is certainly great to know where all of these candidates currently stand.

Idiocy of inside the beltway Repubs
'The surprisingly positive results for Thompson in the L.A. Times'

'It looks like Republicans are still looking for an ideal candidate and take Thompson quite seriously.'

They have 2 and 2, but they still can't add them together and get 4.

Liberty
He only gets a "C" and I'm sure your guy, Ron Paul, who I also like, gets an "A" on immigration.

But guess what, Ron Paul is about as electable as Rosie O'Blubberbutt is skinny.

We HAVE to go with the most conservative man we have, who can WIN. Unless you prefer life udner Hitlary and Obama Osama?

Fred Thompson
Americans for Better Immigration gives him a "C" on immigration.

GunnyG
It's called inflation.

GunnyG
Inflation.

BTW, you aren't a proponent of the non-free trade agreements, are you?

jerubaal
"Wake up yourself; we're at war. Suspected enemy collaborators are imprisoned during war, secretly, and they don't have to be charged. This is a principle more basic than the Constitution, even more basic than liberty: it's about survival. You can't let enemy collaborators roam free during war, nor can you telegraph every punch to the enemy via due process."

No one said anything about letting them run free. However, imprisoning people for years without charging them, or allowing them to have any trial, is not exactly what this country is all about. Yes, plenty of other countries act that way, but we used to be unique. I see no reason for us to start acting like Soviet Russia or the Communist Chinese.

BTW, LIBERTY is what it is ALL about. There is nothing more basic than that. If you will sacrifice your liberty for anything at all, you might as well kiss everything this country has always stood for, goodbye.

"No American in a position of authority within our armed forces and intelligence services is going to knowingly detain an innocent American. That would be a waste of time, it would make more work for yourself, and it could get you fired or jailed."

You are missing the point. The Military Commission Act gives them the authority, however unconstitutionally, to arrest AMERICANS on a mere suspicion and imprison them indefinitely, with no due process of law! Your constitutional rights are out the window.

Maybe you feel just fine merely TRUSTING that they will not use the power that they now have, but I for one, DO NOT. We have a Constitution for a reason, you know. It wasn't meant to be followed just when we felt like it. We were also warned repeatedly by our Founding Fathers NEVER to give up our liberty for a little temporary perceived security. NEVER. We were also told to have no faith in man, but bind him down from mischief with the chains of the Constitution. Unfortunately, a lot of Americans seem to think they know better than our Founding Fathers.

By the way, jerubaal, perhaps you should go read some history on how the German people allowed Nazism to come to power in their country. They were singing the same mantra you appear to be singing.

lilly
care to explain how my income has gone UP yet my over all taxes went DOWN? Indeed, I'm just about into six figures with my pension, my job, and the wife's job, yet our percentage of taxes went DOWN! Still got two kids and one house. WAIT! Maybe it's that second cat I took onboard! haha.

Hmm, must be those TAX CUTS working huh? The SAME tax cuts that the Dhimmicrats want to do away with!

D*mn, YOU ARE DUMB. Stop drinking the kool-aid, it's killed your brain.

hosekuervo
What's Guiliani's "track record"? Socialist pig?

He is PRO-"OPEN BORDERS" and AMNESTY and ANTI-GUN.

How exactly is he any better than the socialist pig, Hillary? Please tell me. Because he has an "R", by his name. Pure BS.

Tryor
Fred got you libs scared huh?

Don't worry, Hanoi John Fonda Kerry is gonna run again, or maybe not. Check my blog for the scoop (click on my handle).

Got two AWESOME graphics of Hanoi John as well. Definately brighten up your Monday by seeing them.

Libs, if you VOTED for him, check your stupidity at the door.

Fred Thompson's no savior
Will someone please tell me what Fred Thompson has done to deserve to be president? What problems has he solved? Where is his executive experience? What legislation did he originate? He's a good actor, has a good voice, but his record as a Senator in terms of leadership is uninspiring. Those who offer him as a choice for the Republican Party do so at the peril of the nation.

Each election is always touted as the most important election, and it is. As our world becomes more complicated, the issues become more complex and dangerous. We need someone brilliant to be president, not just someone who can vote on the issues. That's what Fred Thompson has done. Vote. To my knowledge, he has not originated anything remotely creative, or problem-solving. His reputation was that he was somewhat lazy as a senator. Obviously, he didn't like public service sufficiently to remain and try to address the problems of the country. He preferred acting. Perhaps for the money? Hardly a recommendation for a candidate. What are you draft Thompson supporters thinking?

Dick Morris is rarely correct in his assessments. His loyalty to the conservative cause is inspired by his antipathy toward the Clintons. Hardly a basis for considering him a conservative.

Obama fans
Obama fans need to do a little research into his campaign tactics from his run for the Illinois Senate. His brass-knuckle-style of politics should give any rational person a moment of pause.

""The trouble with the French is, they've got no word for 'entrepreneur'"

Ha Ha heh heh. If you think Bush doesn't know that that word is French, you've missed one of the funnier Bush jokes. You've also failed to note that all Bushes make fun of the French with wit like this. I remember Bush Sr. telling a French diplomat, "You think we're arrogant, and we think you're French".

To TopGun
We've now had six years of a businessman president with the result that he has constructed a pipeline running directly from our pockets to those of Corporate America. He has globalized our economy to the extent of rewarding companies that send our jobs offshore. He has allowed business to write legislation and regulations with disastrous results for public health. He has privatized government functions even when leaving them in government hands is shown to cost less and accomplish more, and he has lied and edited and changed reports in support of that policy. Regarding illegal immigration, he has been out to lunch because this stance pleases business by supplying cheap labor.

Thanks, I'd like a president who knows something about the law, social policy, foreign policy, diplomacy, economics, and American history.

And, speaking of entrepreneurs, since you bring up the subject, Bush once said in a speech, "The trouble with the French is, they've got no word for 'entrepreneur'". This man has a large black hole where his general knowledge should be. For most people, this hole is somewhat filled in at school.

Edwards vs Gulliani
Edwards will be the Dems choice. They want to win and will not risk nominating a black guy or woman for the top spot. OBama will probably end up as VP.
Rudy will survive as the GOPs guy. He's the only Republican who has a prayer.
It's obvious from the last election that the country is trending towards the left and while Thompson is attractive to the far right, he would never win the general election. What are his credentials other than being a conservative idealogue? People have had their fill of that with Bush/Cheney and will want a proven track record this time.

Conservative candidate
Peppermint says "Will the real conservative please stand up?"

That REAL conservative room has gone unoccupied since the death of Robert Taft IMHO.

To tnmccoy
If you check Barack Obama's online campaign biography you will see that he was born August 4, 1961 which will make him 46, not 36, on his birthday next August. If elected, he would be 47 when assuming office, older than Teddy Roosevelt and Jack Kennedy as well as several other presidents.

As for his experience, he has had eight years in the Illinois Senate plus two years in the United States Senate, giving him ten years in elected public office or twice as much as George W Bush had when he was (s)elected president.

I am amused that Republicans, who did not care a bit that Obama was President of the Harvard Law Review (an awesome achievement for any budding attorney) suddenly got impressed when he raised $25 million in his first ten weeks of candidacy. Don't you people notice anything but money?

Liberty
Wake up yourself; we're at war. Suspected enemy collaborators are imprisoned during war, secretly, and they don't have to be charged. This is a principle more basic than the Constitution, even more basic than liberty: it's about survival. You can't let enemy collaborators roam free during war, nor can you telegraph every punch to the enemy via due process.

No American in a position of authority within our armed forces and intelligence services is going to knowingly detain an innocent American. That would be a waste of time, it would make more work for yourself, and it could get you fired or jailed.

Now, the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy (VRWC) WILL detain so-called "innocent" Americans on a presumption of guilt if they are serial seditionists. But even they get some due process in the form of a summary trial before their summary executions.

Rain Tonight, Sunny Tomorrow
Every time I read a Dick Morris column, I'm reminded of a meteorologist. His predictions apparently change with the rotation of the Earth, and they're usually wrong.

Morris still has an unhealthy fixation on Hillary and Bill Clinton. You can tell because no matter the topic, he usually brings one or both of them into the presentation. Grow up and expand your mind, oh guru Morris.

By the way, who is Eileen McGann, and why is she listed as co-writer? Can't Morris even put a column together by himself? Does she write the sections of the columns NOT about the Clintons? And isn't Morris a highly paid advisor and pundit? That's highly paid---not reasonably paid.

Fred Thompson will run for the presidency because we need him, especially since he carries far less baggage than the other candidates. And he's a heavyweight on the positive side. I like his stated and active beliefs and political acumen. He appeals to a more basic Republicanism than either Giuliani or McCain. Romney looks good on paper, but I don't think he has the drawing or staying power to make it to the general election.

As for the Democrats: the three front runners seem to be Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and John Edwards. None of them can win the Presidency.

Hillary [the smartest woman in the world] is too polarizing. Too many people dislike or even hate her. And her presidency would be an extreme danger to the health and welfare of most Americans---and I think they understand that. Her being a woman may garner her a few votes but nowhere near enough to get anywhere.

Barack Obama is only 36 years old, and most of his political experience has been in the Illinois Senate. I believe he's way too young and inexperienced in politics and government administration to form a viable candidate. Yes, he's black, but that doesn't bother me---though it may concern too many others. His politics bother me. Considered the fair-haired boy of the new century [by Liberals and the MSM---but not by the average American], he'll automatically garner the votes of most blacks and the elite Liberals---but not nearly enough to run a close race with anybody.

And John Edwards? It's not his age, 54, nor his looks, but his politics. He supports most Democrat and Liberal positions, including affirmative action, abortion rights, and the 'reform' of health-care insurance [ala Hillary.] I examined his voting record and found Liberal/Democrat lockstep throughout. He never saw a tax he doesn't like, nor did he care about family or the newborn [assuming they can actually make it to full birth] in his votes.

So, most Americans will probably not vote for any of these three, and I hope that paves the way for an easy and important victory for Fred Thompson. I looked up his Senate voting record, and there wasn't much to disagree with. For the most part, he voted with the Republicans as one would expect. His Washington experience is far greater than one would think based on his later entertainment experiences.

I like Fred Thompson, and I'd prefer Uncle Fred to Uncle Hillary any day.

Two problems with the polls
On the Moveon.org poll, we all know that they hate Hillary so that is probably not as bad news for her as the 300,000 people who contributed to Obama's big pile.

On the LA Times poll, I understand that they polled registered Republicans who said they are definitely going to vote. This is even better than it looks because the evidence is that Republican registration is down significantly and my guess is that it mainly conservatives, like me, who re-registered as unaffilitated independents. We LOVE Thompson so maybe he is number one? Whoo-hoo!!

Magnificus
Agreed! What we need right now more than anything for our country is s strong leader! I believe Thompson is the man.

Goshawk
Anytime.

And despite what jerubaal might say...not all Massachusetts Conservatives are "pansy northern rinos". LOL

BUT...
Horse might want to look into Romney's governorship of my state...Romney was more a RINO than one might like to believe.
I've said it over & over...Romney is a FLIP-FLOPPIN' 'say whatever it takes' candidate.... We need more than that.

We Need a REAL Conservative and Fred Thompson is the only one of the VERY FEW Real Conservatives running who can get it done. (IMHO)

Magnificus
Thanks for posting the link to the 'draft Thompson petition.' I went there registered and signed the petition. Am urging all interested in supporting Fred Thompson for President to do the same.

Will the real
conservative please stand up?

fred thompson
mr thompson is the only true conservative running,he is light years ahead of any other candidate,im not real crazy about mccain or gulliani both are too liberal but they would be better than obama or clinton

Roy
I'm pretty sure you didn't mean to call that Iraqi exile "Chalibi" either. His name is Ahmed Chalabi.

Get Off Mitts back
Look lets make one thing clear Mitt Romney Irregardless of his religion is a good candidate for President. The fact that Mitt and family are Latter Day Saints would make me more inclined to vote for him. Even though I am not a member of his faith. Look folks I have had the privilege of knowing Saints my entire life and you wont find a more Honest, Decent, Patriotic group of people.

Folks like to say the saints are a cult. Well if they are and I don t believe it. Then may we can all learn a little about what it means to truly live what we say we believe from them. Folks I believe that a man like Romney who follows the dictates of his faith is worth more than the shallow hypocrites like Rudy and Newt put together.

Look I don't know if Joseph Smith was a prophet or not. What I do Know Is that the church he built has produced some the finest people this world has ever seen. So get off Mitts back we should be honored that this man of God would want to be our president.

Hear here, jerubaal!
.

No Surprise, Dick!
Thompson's surge is no surprise to any REAL republican, i.e., a Southern Republican.

Thompson is the first Southerner to enter the race. Everyone else running is now officially a sodomite in the Southern mindset, or may as well be, you pansy northern rinos.

Dick Morris
keeps changing his predictions from week to week. I recall seeing him on Hannity predicting that the POTUS was Hillary's to have. Now, he's got her running in the rear. It's all hocus pocus because no one knows the twists and turns this election will take.

McCain may be a hawk on war, but he has done some mighty stupid things on conservative issues, in particular I hate the terrorist sympathy joke, I mean bill.

http://peppermintsplace.townhall.com
I have a new chapter, 13, of Juliet's diary on my blog now.

Chalibi - Iraqi not Iranian
A typo. Chalibi, of course, is/was an Iraqi exile, not Iranian.

Morris - a problem himself
Everytime I see Morris' column I wince. To begin with, he's a embittered turncoat who used to love the Clintons, and I rarely trust him to have wise judgment. In the second place he had a wild scandal of his own which I will not recite. Some of you will remember. In my view he's a creep, and I change the channel whenever O'Reilly has him on.

Thompson might be electable. Too early to say. I doubt if any other Democratic candidate at the moment could win.

The sentiment against Bush is so strong even among people like me (I never voted for Clinton and would like to vote GOP) that any Republican who makes excuses for that stupid decision to invade Iraq will not get my vote. It has been one of the worst blunders in US history. It indicated that Bush (a decent man himself, I think) was hoodwinked by ambitious and lying Iranian exiles like Chalibi, Israel-firsters such as Wolfowitz, Feith and Perle, and those greedy elements of the military-industrial complex (remember Ike's warning) that put making money ahead of the lives of brave young Americans. (Morris, by the way, is part of that Israel-first crowd.)

Saddam was vile, but he was despised by bin Laden and kept the Islamic extremists under complete control. Our Iraq invasion gave Al Qaeda a major victory against the USA. It further endangers our allies in the Middle East, including Israel who was supposed to benefit from the downfall of Saddam. How could we have been so foolish? Now some Iranian exiles, Israel-firsters, and greedy moneymakers want us to go after Iran, which also has been a strong enemy of Al Qaeda and the Taliban!

Hope Bush finally has woken up. I'm inclined to think he has.

The MSM would like to see
either McCain or Giuliani as the GOP standard bearer because they are "acceptable".....to the left! (kc_harley nailed McCain perfectly!)
That in itself is enough reason for conservatives to oppose them. Thus, I welcome Fred Thompson into the fray....let's hear what he has to say about the issues and we can make our decision about him.
I also disagree with Dick Morris about Romney in that the issue is his (apparent) willingness to change core positions as necessary. I think that his religion does not matter as much as does his personal integrity, which seems to be coming into question.
Finally, a Christmas wish for Dick Morris - for either a spellchecker or an editor who can spell. Good gosh, man!

I want that bet
Morris says he bets that Giuliani will beat Thompson in the primaries. I want that bet. Giuliani's strength is in the blue states who will continue, regardless of Giuliani's stature there, to vote liberal democrat, theyv'e been brainwashed too many years by the Kennedys, Hillary and Bill, the liberal ivy league universities etc. Thompson will have the base, the strength of the party, in other words the people with fire in their bellys who will get out the vote not merely vote for the lesser of two evils (Bush-Kerry Bush-Gore), Now we have a candidate who will get the vote out, Fred Thompson.

handy
"Fred Thompson didn't announce his cancer problem to make him more viable as a presidential candidate. He announced it to make him more viable as a replacement for Paul Harvey"

ARE YOU DILUSSIONAL?
OR
Were you just joking?

Cuz mark my words.......That is funny stuff!!

The meat of the issue
"certainly no amnesty or nothing blanket like that."

AND

"if you have the right kind of policies, and you're not encouraging people to come here and encouraging them to stay once they're here, they'll go back, many of them, of their own volition,"

I'm with Scottie and Goshawk
Thompson has the same appeal for me that B Hussein O has on the left. Their politics seem simple and clear cut because neither is responsible for the messes we see on left and right. Its a sad thing to reach a point where an unknown who could jump anywhere seems preferable to a leader with a track record, but with the records of any power name being so rotten, it will be a relative unknown as candidate. One thing the left and right have in common is complete disgust with their representation.

In their own words...
is sometimes the best way to evaluate a candidates position.

A previous poster intimated Fred Thompson's record on immigration was weak.

Here are the MANS own words from his Fox News Sunday interview (4/11/07)

CHRIS WALLACE: You also favor comprehensive immigration reform. I want to...
THOMPSON: No, no, no, no.

WALLACE: Well, let me put up on the screen something that you said last year about illegals, and let's take a look at it. "You're going to have to, in some way, work out a deal where they can have some aspirations of citizenship but not make it so easy that it's unfair to the people waiting in line and abiding by the law."
Now, you said, "Look, it's just not realistic that we're going to round up 12 million people and ship them all out of the country."

THOMPSON: Well, that's true, as a general statement. We woke up one day after years of neglect and apparently discovered that we have somewhere between 12 million and 20 million illegal aliens in this country. So it became an impossible situation to deal with.
I mean, there's really no good solution. So what do you do? You have to start over. Well, I'm concerned about the next 12 million or 20 million. So that's why enforcement, and enforcement at the border, has to be primary.
I think most people feel disillusioned after 1986 when we had this deal offered to them before, and now we're insisting that, you know, we solve the security problem first, and then we'll talk about what to do with regard to other things - certainly no amnesty or nothing blanket like that.
But figure out some way to make some differentiation between the kind of people that we have here.
You know, if you have the right kind of policies, and you're not encouraging people to come here and encouraging them to stay once they're here, they'll go back, many of them, of their own volition, instead of having to, you know, load up moving vans and rounding people up. That's not going to happen.
--------------------
And his votes (1996) from SenateMatch (a liberal watchdog organization.)
Their analysis of "no opinion" is at least slightly biased...

No opinion on Legal Immigration / Migrant Workers
YES on LIMIT WELFARE for immigrants:
YES on VISAS for SKILLED workers:
YES on allowing more foreign workers into the US for FARM WORK

kc_harley
I personally can't stand McCain, but there is no reason for YOU to hold what he did with the Military Cm. Act against him. His changes made it even worse than it already was.

I'll tell you one thing for sure, it is absolutely shocking to me that Americans can think this is a good piece of legislation. If you feel fine about lowering yourselves down to the same level as Soviet Russia, then fine. But, you really should read the legislation, because you clearly missed the fact that it applies to Americans too. Yes, you can be picked up on a mere accusation, let's say from your neighbor, and thrown in a secret prison camp, indefinitely. Nope... no constitutional rights for you, buddy. NOW, are you so proud of this legislation?????

WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!

Thompson
I still think you guys should check him out further. His associations are not good. Council on Foreign Relations and American Enterprise Institute. I do believe we have a neocon globalist here, folks. And according to this, he doesn't come out so well on illegal immigration. Just check it out for yourselves, before you make a decision. Make sure you know where he stands.

Run Fred Run!
Our best possible hope for a victory and a return to conservative leadership, IMO!

Fred Thompson
Just like the heavyweight division in boxing, someone has to take the bull by the horns and step up to the plate. Fred Thompson is definitely the man. What a relief it will be to see this man take over the ailing Republican party.

Mc Cain
Your column couldn't be more off base and just plain Wrong about McCains Nose dive!

Iraq is his Strongest political positon with regards to Conseravtives, Notice-I said "Conservatives!"

The Republican party used to be regarded as Conservative, obviously NO more!

McCains Poor Numbers are Attributed to the following:

1) Gang of 14
2) Concern for the Terrorists-Gitmo and Military Tribunals
3) McCain -Feingold
4) Amnesty for Illegals

None of which you mentioned!

Here's another Clue for you-

GB's popularity has not suffered because of his strong position on the GWOT and Iraq!!

Again- Amnesty and Domestic Spending are the two biggest negatives for conservatives!

I really don't think you have a Clue as to what a "Conservative" is!

Pub maybe, but certainly not a "Conservative!"

I think Spector calls himself a PUB, def. not a conservative!

Goodby McCain !
McCain is not loosing because of his position on the war, he is loosing because he has demonstrated contempt for the conservative base.

Thompson getting ready!
This is indeed good news!

Fred Dalton Thompson
The only conservative candidate on the ticket in '08. There is a hugh pent up well of support just waiting to erupt once his candidacy is announced. Mark my words, HUGE.
