Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Bill isn't alone in legitimizing Dubai. Other Clinton pals - including disgraced former National Security Adviser Sandy Berger, ex-Secretary of State Madeline Albright and Al and Tipper Gore - have attended highly publicized events there.

So have some Republicans - including former Bush Sr. Chief of Staff John Sununu, presidential brother Neal Bush and Rudy Guiliani.

Republican ex-Sen. Bob Dole and Democratic ex-Rep. Tom Downey lobby for Dubai; so does The Glover Park Group, home of Hillary Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson and former President Clinton press secretary Joe Lockhart.

Major U.S. business leaders populate the many conferences sponsored by Dubai and its industries.

All of this helps legitimize Dubai. And no one mentions the problem with Israel.

Bill Clinton even created a Dubai Scholars Program at the American University in Dubai under the sponsorship of the William Jefferson Clinton Foundation. Laura Tyson, Clinton's chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, created a similar Dubai study program at the University of London.

But not everyone is blind.

Last month, the University of Connecticut correctly abandoned plans to open up a campus in Dubai after serious complaints about Dubai's state-imposed discrimination of people based on their national origin and religion and its documented violations of human rights. (For example, Human Rights Watch has said Dubai abuses tens of thousands of migrant workers from India and Pakistan.)

The Clinton Foundation certainly wouldn't sponsor a program in America that banned Israeli students. It shouldn't sponsor one in Dubai, either.

It's time to stop legitimizing an anti-Semitic state.

Am I the only person who is tired of people accusing others of anti-semitism when they dare point out the facts of any wrongdoing by someone who just so happens to be jewish?

Morris, Jews and Foreign Policy
Anti-Semitism is evil. Any sane person knows that. But, frankly, the question can't always be: is it good for the Jews? Just sometimes we have to ask: is it good for America? is it good for the world? is it good for peace? Etc.

Two or three facts stick out that will cause some readers to blow their tops.

(1) Jewish neocons were key people in pushing us into the foolish invasion of Iraq. I'm talking about Wolfowitz, Feith, Wurmser, Perle, Abrams and others. Now, if I were Jewish perhaps I would have favored the attack, also. After all, Saddam clearly aided Palestinians against Israel. But I'm not Jewish. I'm just a normal average Christian American. I want Israel to exist peacefully, but invading Iraq is no help toward that goal. What we achieved was a mess, thousands killed or maimed, alienating the rest of the world, huge, huge debt, etc. And Israel is at the top of the most-hated-country list. Let me add quickly lest I be accused of anti-Semitism (well, that will happen regardless), that many prominent Jews opposed the invasion. Unfortunately the ones who had the ear of the Administration were aggressive, miserable, conniving, stupid hawks. I hope that describes them adequately. And to think that Wolfowitz is now head of the World Bank. Shouldn't he be tried as a war criminal?

(2) Israel is a heavy burden on the USA. We've provided them over 100 billion, plus many, many other measure of support. This over-indulgence of America was the initial factor that eventually led to 9-11. What a heavy price we have paid - and still pay - for all-out support for Israel regardless. The reason? No love of Israel. But domestic politics. Jews give about 50% of all funds for political campaigns, and if you were to defy the AIPAC and allies you would likely be smeared beyond belief. Many questions. Just this one: "How does continual expansion of Israeli settlements on the west bank contribute to peace?" American policy should be pro-Israel, true - but ALSO genuinely pro-Palestinian. For years no politician could even mention a Palestinian state - remember Hillary some years ago? Israel must: (1) Leave the West Bank and Golen Heights entirely; if settlements remain, they must agree to be under Palestinian law. (2) Accept the Arab section of Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine; (3) Reimburse Palestinians for lands seized etc - Jews got billions from Germany etc for the Holocaust. Oh, and the Palestinians had nothing to do with the Holocaust though they have paid a steep price for it. Hamas, by the way, was encouraged by Israel at the outset to combat Arafat. Hamas won because Israeli occupation is humiliating, killing Palestinians, stealing more of their land, etc.

(3) I see Morris on O'Reilly and consider him a sleazy weasel indulging in gutter smearing. He is one of those Jews whose first concern seems to be Israel. As stated above, I understand why Jews take a particular interest in Israel, in light of their history, but US foreign policy cannot be always determined by Israeli desires and interests. Most American Jews realize that. They are patriotic Americans. It's the AIPAC-types that have caused us so many deaths and so much damage.

Much more to say. But it's late and time for bed. Meanwhile, think, read both sides (we seldom hear the Palestinian case), and smile.
